How lucky are we to have the absolute legend Joanna Lumley coming to Brecon on Saturday 18th November? I am a huge fan, not just of Ab Fab, but of her many appearances on our screens, plus her as a unique individual and inspirational person. Please let us turn out in the masses and do Brecon proud.Turn to page 27 for more details. As you take time to do the annual Christmas shopping, please consider your local town and surrounding villages. The shops need footfall, the businesses need you to make purchases. This will ensure their future, ensure they stay open, ensure they employ local people. It’s a known fact that money spent in the smaller businesses will stay within the local community. I’m not guaranteeing you’ll find everything you need locally, but I’ll bet my Natwest Piggy Bank collection you’ll get rather a lot ticked off the list before going on line, or going further afield. I’ll even go one step further and say you will be surprised at the competitive prices and the uniqueness of the gift. We, Cariads Local Ltd, have started to ask our advertisers if they’d like to give us feedback. I am chuffed to read the various words that have been spoken or emailed. It’s good to hear we are helping businesses. Some will be printed to the left of this column. Thank you to those who have taken the time to get in touch. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x (Photo: Mr B, Lisa Marie, Cariad and Otis Badham)

For the chance to win 4 tickets to a show of your choice at Hay Winter Festival, (can mix and match, subject to availability)... please complete the word search on page 45 and send to us by 16th November 2017. The winner will be picked at random.

In Brecon again!

Crickhowell Choral Society is delighted to have the opportunity of performing in Brecon Cathedral again. Hot on the heels of the extremely successful HMS Pinafore in July, the choir will be singing Dvorák’s beautiful Mass in D and will be accompanied for the first time by Brecknock Sinfonia, thereby forging a welcome new collaboration. Dvorak’s Mass in D deserves to be better known. It is a crystallization of the composer’s style, full of sweeping tunes and many emotional climaxes for both singers and orchestra. The conductor will be Steve Marshall, Crickhowell Choral Society’s Director, who has also programmed for this concert Haydn’s ebullientTe Deum and selected choruses from Handel’s dramatic and exciting Israel in Egypt. Tickets £15 (students free) from Webb’s, Crickhowell and The Hours Bookshop, Brecon. They will also be available on the door. Dates for your diary include: Come and Sing Fauré’s Requiem at St. Mary’s Priory Church Abergavenny on Saturday 18th February 2018. Crickhowell Music Festival 3-7 May 2018.

East London, a city in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province. Where do you live now? Llangynidr.

2. Be brave – you are stronger than you believe. What makes you grumpy? Lack of sleep and/or food. #hangry You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? A Picasso – but it could only be a small one for a million... Have any bad habits? Yes, but I’m not going to share them!

Marital status? Single.

Which bad habits drive you crazy? Littering, always.

Occupation? One of two Senior Library Assistants at Brecon Library, (soon to be Senior Hub Assistants at Y Gaer!).

Of the eighties cartoons, either the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Heroes in a half shell!) or Bucky O’Hare. Are you a collector of anything? Other than books? My friends would say shoes, I’d say art (when I can afford it) and pins/badges for my jacket – cheap, wearable art! If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A cat – I’ve seen how they live! If you could have any superpower, what would it be? The power to control time, no TARDIS required. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? What time do I have to get up? What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I really need to put this book down... Do you believe in ghosts? I love horror movies, so when I’m watching The Shining, yes! Most exciting thing you’ve won? I have a Blue Peter Badge! Two lessons life has taught you? 1. Adopt don’t shop, there are so many wonderful animals looking for homes just waiting for you.

What have you done in your life that would surprise someone meeting you for the first time? I was the model for the illustrations in a children’s book when I was a teenager! What book would you recommend to others? I have to pick just one?! Still really loving Joe Hill’s book The Fireman, but visit the Library and we’ll give you a personal recommendation. Best present ever received? A GIANT Kinder Egg when I was 8. It was literally the size of my head. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I’d love to worry less. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden in South Africa – it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever visited, and it just goes on forever. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: I’d like to spend more time painting and creating, improve my cooking skills - the rest of the family show me up tremendously, knit an Aran jumper, walk the whole Coastal Path and always, always, travel more. Name one regret you have: Saying yes to Laura! Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Uninterrupted reading time. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Getting to make the rules. What’s your favourite song of the moment? Sorry by Nothing but Thieves.

New in Town Name of the business? Caffi Ama is a small family run café centred on the slow food movement. Slow Food is a global, grassroots movement with supporters in over 150 countries around the world that links the pleasure of food with a commitment to the community and the environment using sustainable seasonal produce. Where are you based or area you work in? We are based at 37 The Watton, just next to the Bank Pub. Why Brecon? I’ve worked in Brecon for Tenovus for the last 2 years and have lived in Talgarth for the last 10, so know the town well. Brecon has a lovely welcoming atmosphere and amazingly supportive people. Our aim is to really showcase local seasonal produce and local artisan food, and there is so much of that in and around Brecon, it would be a crime not to base ourselves here. Why did you decide to open this shop/business? I had visited Café Bijou a number of times in the past and really loved the historic building and lovely setting. We were very sad to hear it was closing, but when we heard the business was for sale it seemed like an opportunity we couldn’t pass up, if we could pull a business plan together, and 8 months later here we are.

What are some of challenges you encountered? There’s no two ways around it, the café / food market is a crowded space to operate in and trying to get word out that our little place is open is difficult, but word of mouth is spreading now and people are starting to realise we’re open for business and the response so far has been very positive. What do you wish you had known before you started? How great our staff would be. Starting a business up from scratch is a very daunting task and I would have been a lot more relaxed if I knew that when it came time to look for staff to help me, I would certainly fall on my feet. I have a small, but brilliant team, which have made all the difference to my first month in business. (Thanks Kat and Alisa!). Is this the first business you have launched? Yes, it’s my first business and there are surprises around every corner, some I had thought of and others that I really wish I had. Its amazingly hard work, but very rewarding when you have happy customers. It’s great when a customer takes time to come up to the counter before they leave and say “just wanted to say thanks, that was really nice” (Or takes the time to leave a five start review on Facebook/ Google/Tripadvisor).

What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? What really ignited my interest in the slow food movement was when I attended a training course with Hugh Fernley Whittenstall all about sustainable, seasonal food production and cooking. I’ve worked at artisan cafes in the past and helped manage the YHA café business in Talybont, so when this opportunity came up it really felt too good to miss. Describe a typical day in your business: We start each morning with a “to bake / make list” we do this whilst being open for breakfast, so it can sometimes be a bit of a juggling act. Sometimes it’s a fresh batch of scones, an orange polenta cake or the soup of the day, but it keeps us busy and ensures we are ready for mid morning teas and coffees as well as lunch. Lunch is our favourite time, especially when its busy as it generates a great atmosphere in the cafe, it’s always hard work as we serve customers and build takeaway lunches and coffees for those too busy to take a break, but also a fun time. Afternoons are just as busy, as lunch turns into an afternoon snack or cake. We also run craft workshops with local artists or groups in our upstairs dining rooms which we hope will be a lot of fun for people that are new to a craft or just want a good coffee whilst they knit. We have a knitting workshop and a macramé workshop scheduled very soon. As evening falls (we normally shut at 5pm) we don’t get much time to relax, as we also open for special events in the evenings, we recently hosted a Jazz Supper for the Brecon Jazz club, a Murder Mystery Evening for Tenovus Cancer Care at Halloween, and are now taking bookings for Christmas partys. During all of this activity, I also find time to seek out new local suppliers for ingredients and products whether it be the salad leaves we use, the Bacon in our Swper Mam, or the cheese in our Rarebit, we take a lot of effort to find and use what we think is the best of local, sustainable produce and I hope it shows in the food. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Go for it. We have a great local business community in Brecon, and we have found everyone to be very supportive. Use the local resources like The Local Beacon to help get your name out there.

Harvest Field Llangorse by Hazel Price

Photographer name: Hazel Price. Where do you live? Llangorse. Amateur or professional photographer? Amateur. How and when did you get into photography? After many years of teaching, I was able to take up photography as a hobby. However, I soon realised that the camera in my hand was a mystery to me with all its knobs and dials. I started looking at magazines, books, internet blogs and articles. It’s surprising how much you can learn. A small group of Llangorse photographers led by Mike Featherstone inspired me to get started. I soon learnt that to capture the heron flying over Llangorse Lake, I would need a more powerful camera with a long zoom lens. I progressed from a small compact camera to a DSLR, and now own a mirrorless camera with several lenses.

I have attended day workshops and enjoyed some longer photography holidays to places such as Dorset and Northumberland. This made me want to create more creative images. I joined Hay Camera Club and have enjoyed a great deal of friendship and support from the members there. We have group outings, talks, competitions and a great Christmas dinner! What is your favourite local point of beauty? The splendid view of the Lake and the Beacons from the rocks near the top of Llangorse Mountain is a fitting reward for the steep climb to the top. The peace and tranquility at the birdhide near Llangasty can be well worth the short walk from the lake side. Top tip to other local photographers: For landscapes in low light always be prepared to use a tripod even though it means carrying it up the mountain. In the past, I have often not bothered and to my regret come away with a blurry image.

GLANUSK SERVICES Sennybridge YOUR ONE STOP SHOP Situated on the main A40 between Brecon & Llandovery

The ‘Old Museum’ The building in Glamorgan Street now known as ‘The Muse’ was the home of the first Brecknock museum. It was officially opened on March 1st 1928 in what had been a Congregational Chapel built in 1833. Until that time, most artefacts found in Breconshire were housed at the National Museum in Cardiff. Lord Glanusk, however, purchased the dugout canoe found in Llangorse Lake, and placed it in the first Brecknock Museum. The Brecknock Society was founded in 1927, led by the efforts of Sir John Conway Lloyd. Lord Buckland was its first president and paid £300 for the conversion of the chapel. The first curator was P J Mountney, but due to insufficient funds, his contract was not renewed in 1930. Sir John Lloyd, with volunteers, developed the museum until it was handed over to Breconshire County Council in 1950. After the death of Sir John the honorary curator was Canon J Jones Davies, a man of vision and drive and under his direction the museum grew in strength. By the 1970’s the Old Museum building was too small and plans were drawn up to rehouse the museum in the redundant Shire Hall. The transfer was completed by March 1974 and the new Brecknock Museum was opened by the Honorary Curator. www.blfhs.co.uk © Breconshire Local & Family History Society

do just that and it was still ready to flower as well as bearing fruits in November. The Photography Walk at Allt Rhongyr Nature Reserve near Penwyllt is a great opportunity to experience the grandeur of the scenery around this reserve as well as take photographs in its own varied habitats. One of Britain’s best surviving savings accounts gets the chop: Thousands of loyal Yorkshire BS savers to see 3.55% rate cut

INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVICE

“Your local source of unbiased advice explained in Plain English” F SAVINGS & INVESTMENTS F RETIREMENT PLANNING

Thousands of Yorkshire Building Society customers will see their returns diminished as one of Britain’s best savings deals gets the chop. At present, savers with issue one of its Regular Saver bag a return of 3.55 per cent on balances up to £20,000. However, Britain’s third biggest mutual has written to these loyal savers to say that they will be transferred to Single Access Saver Unique Edition paying 1.5 per cent in December 2017. And in a double-whammy, savers will only get this rate for one year as it then converts to its Triple Access Saver, which currently pays just 0.6 per cent. It will mean the 66,000 savers who currently have this deal will see their returns crumble by 83 per cent in 12 months. When the account was initially put on sale, Bank of England base rate was 4.75 per cent, rising to 5.75 per cent over the next year then falling over time to the current 0.25 per cent. The account, including bonus currently pays 3.55 per cent. In contrast, the best buy easy-access savings rate in the independent This is Money savings tables pays just 1.3 per cent. With inflation touching 3 per cent, this news comes as another blow to savers who are seeing their savings eroded in real terms. Savers will be hoping that Mark Carney the Governor of the Bank of England will provide them with some rest bite soon. The key interest rate still stands at 0.25 per cent. – Tom Russell – Director of Beacon IFA Ltd

F.A.Q - The majority of businesses need premises to operate from, whether they are for offices, workshops, factories or storage facilities. While some businesses own the premises they operate from, most occupy under a lease paying a rent. But, there is more to a commercial lease than the payment of rent and the answers to the following commonly asked questions will give potential business tenants some useful guidance:-

1. Once I have signed the lease can I get out of it if my business suffers a downturn? Leases are generally granted for a fixed period of years known as a term. The lease term can only be ended early by the tenant if, prior to entering the lease, the landlord has agreed that the tenant has an option to do so, or, the landlord later agrees to release the tenant from the lease before the term has expired. If neither of these situations arise, and you cannot find an acceptable replacement tenant for the premises, you may well remain bound to pay the rent and comply with all other obligations until the end of the lease term, even if you have vacated the premises. 2. I know there will be rent to pay, but are there any other costs I may be responsible for under the lease? If you are renting part of the landlord’s building such as an office in a block, you may also have a responsibility to contribute in part to the upkeep and maintenance of the whole building such as the roof and structural walls, or other things that are used in common with other occupiers of the landlord’s property, such as lifts or a reception area. This is often referred to as service charge. The tenant very often is also responsible for the payment of the insurance premium for the premises to cover damage to the premises. There can be a cost if you want to transfer the lease, or sub-let part of the property to someone else, as you will usually need the landlord’s written permission, and the landlord can normally claim the cost of considering whether to agree to the transaction and also drafting and agreeing the form of the written permission. Finally, you will usually be responsible for the business rates, utilities and any other outgoings in relation to the premises. Article written by Janet Timothy

REVIEW

Old-fashioned charm at The Strand, Talgarth

We showed up hungry for Sunday lunch at The Strand in Talgarth, some of us (pictured above) very excited at the prospect of a meal out. The menu did not fail us, offering as it does an enormous range of dishes to please all tastes (and ages). The atmosphere was lovely and calm (at least until we turned up), with groups of families, friends and obviously regular customers chatting over lunch. We wasted no time in ordering: Roast Lamb for me, Steak & Guinness pie for him, and a cheese & tomato pizza for the excited one. We also went for nostalgia with starters off the three-course Sunday lunch menu (very good value at £12.50 including tea or coffee, or you can have two courses for £9.45) – prawn cocktail! It arrived in a coupe dish as we hoped, with lashings of Marie Rose sauce and brown bread to mop it up with. The main dishes were satisfyingly hefty – my roast came with all the trimmings and a big jug of delicious gravy. I couldn’t quite finish it all, but not for want of trying. The pie was huge with big chunks of steak and, like all the Strand’s main home-made dishes, comes with a big pile of chips and peas (or the other option of jacket potato and a side salad). I might have nicked a chip or two. The pizza disappeared slowly – it was deemed a good pizza, but she was too absorbed by rearranging all the cutlery on the table to give it her full attention. We were all too stuffed for pudding, which was a shame because the dessert menu includes some lovely sundaes and fruit crumbles. In fact, the extensive menu tempts you to spend all day in

there, from a Full English Breakfast for £6.50 to an Afternoon Tea with scones and cream for £4.50, via a hearty lunch of whatever you fancy – a panini, a burger, a curry, a salad? You’ll never leave. It’s also very inclusive, with vegetarian options and also an unusually large selection of gluten-free dishes. And I don’t know if I ought to mention this (shhh! don’t tell the kids) but they’ve got a Slush Puppy machine, with red and blue slush just like I remember spilling on my ra-ra skirt. Owner Kate Cardwell took the café over in October 1995, so she has now been running it for 22 years. Before that it was run by her parents, Robin and Ann Cardwell, partly as a small café but mainly as a bookshop. Kate’s parents bought the building in 1984. It had previously been West Brecon Farmers and, before that, an old fashioned ironmongers. Kate still has the original till, with a sticker stating it was purchased by a Mr Jones in 1929. Kate may introduce a little bit of modernisation to the café, but it will always keep the lovely oldfashioned feel that makes it so popular with Talgarth residents and visitors. Pop in and see for yourself! The Strand, Talgarth, reviewed by Jesse Ingham

Open Monday to Saturday

Open again!

It’s wonderful to see the beautiful St Mary’s Church in the centre of Brecon open once more. A lot of hard work led to funding being secured for repairs and the building was closed for over a year for extensive and essential structural and roof work necessary due to timber rot and insect infestations. Thankfully, the Church, and lovely café, are fully functioning again, complete with ‘Heritage Area’ giving information about the building’s history. Pop in and take a look at the notice boards displaying details of the works done to maintain such a vital landmark of our town, which has stood for over 900 years. And don’t forget to pick up your Christmas cards from the Cards for Good Causes pop-up shop inside the Church!

Ab Fab Star to Light Up Brecon Joanna Lumley, the Absolutely Fabulous star and advocate for the Gurkha Justice Campaign, is to switch on the Christmas lights in Brecon this year. This will be the highlight of the town’s “Brecon with Bells On” Christmas Market on Saturday 18th November organised by Brecon Town Council. It is the second year the event has been staged in the town centre. Councillor Ann Mathias, Chair of the Council’s Environment Committee, commented: “I am thrilled that Joanna Lumley has kindly agreed to come and support us. She is fully aware of the strong links the town has with the Nepalese community. We, as a Council, are encouraging everybody in Brecon to come together for this fantastic day.” Joanna said “Brecon has always been such brave and generous hosts and defenders of their Gurkhas and Nepalese community, a “Beacon” indeed”. Joanna was born in Kashmir, India, where her father was a Major in the 6th Gurkha Rifles. She first came to fame in the 1960s as a model before moving on to have a distinguished career as an actress on both stage and screen. Her portrayal of Patsy Stone in the BBC sitcom Absolutely Fabulous won her two Bafta TV Awards. Joanna led a highly publicised and successful campaign to ensure that Gurkha Veterans who had served in the British Army before 1997 gained the same rights as their British and Commonwealth counterparts. She is a Vice Patron of the Gurkha Welfare Trust.

Major (Retired) Kushiman Gurung MVO, Secretary of Brecon Nepalese Society Wales UK said “The Gurkha community of Brecon is overjoyed that Joanna Lumley (Didi) is coming to Brecon for the switching on of the Christmas lights. It is no secret that Joanna (Didi) is not just the daughter of a Gurkha Officer, but is also a well respected person of many around the world. Her support and dedication towards the retired Gurkhas is second to none and without her wholehearted support and campaign we would simply not be enjoying the life in the UK as we are now. It would be an honour to welcome her in this lovely part of the Country and she will no doubt add extra dimension in the local community to the event”. The main sponsors of the event are Brecon Beacons National Park Authority, SpecSavers and Zeeras Indian Restaurant and Takeaway. “Brecon with Bells On” will start at 12 noon with stalls and entertainment for the whole family in the town centre, leading up to the switching on of the town’s Christmas lights at 6 pm. Anyone interested in taking part in the event should contact BreconTown Clerk on 01874 622884 or email brecon.guildhall@btinternet.com

Gardening Column

VIBURNUM The Viburnum group of both evergreen and deciduous shrubs is a large one indeed and is able to provide beauty and interest all year round. So much so in fact that Viburnums could be chosen as a plant for every month! Most have white or pink flowers, many are sweetly perfumed, some have berries in colours ranging through yellow and red to shiny black and most of the deciduous varieties have an autumn colour display to rival even the Japanese Maples. In November the evergreen Viburnum tinus has glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of red, pink or white buds which will provide colour all winter until they open into small white or pink flowers in spring. At the same time the Viburnum bodnantense group, including “Dawn” and “Charles Lemont”, are showing their richly coloured autumn leaves to be followed by sweetly scented, rose tinted flowers which last into winter and beyond. Also at this time of year Viburnum opulus – the Guelder Rose – is showing off its red, maple like autumn leaves and its rich red, translucent fruits which last well into winter. If that is not enough in the summer the shrub is covered in flattened clusters of white flowers like those of a Lacecap Hydrangea. Viburnums are hardy, easy to grow shrubs and can be controlled in shape and size by pruning as soon as flowering is over. They will grow in sun or semishade and do best in a reasonably fertile, moisture retentive soil. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

Over the course of the last six months the British Government, led by Theresa May have at every possible opportunity tried to advance our current negotiating position with the European Union. The Prime Minister’s powerful speech in Florence just a few weeks ago was the latest example of Britain holding out its hand to really push these negotiations forward and make some significant progress by Christmas. I have been shocked, at the totally unacceptable behaviour by the EU when it comes to resolving the issue of Brexit. In recent months the EU’s lead negotiators and their staff have been leaking confidential information to the European press after meetings with British officials. This month the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to not further Brexit negotiations with the UK. Both Welsh Labour and Plaid Cymru MEPs shamefully voted in favour of this. This seems to be a widespread and well co-ordinated effort by those who refuse to accept the referendum to try and undermine the vote of June 23rd 2016. They are doing this by making the British Government look as though it is incapable of negotiating with the EU. Even though it is the EU that is refusing to concede anything in these negotiations. In her Florence speech the Prime Minister said she thinks that the UK would need a transition deal with the EU. This would mean that in some respects we would have to act under EU law after we leave in 2019.This shows just how flexible the PM is trying to be when it comes to the UK and the EU getting the best deal for everyone. Even Denmark’s Finance Minister, Kristian Jensen has slammed Brussels for ‘playing games’ when it comes to negotiating Britain’s withdrawal. The latest rejection was received just a few days ago when their chief negotiator said that negotiations will not currently move further because Britain has not agreed to their financial demands. In a nut shell, the EU are saying that until Britain agrees to pay tens of billions of pounds as a leaving payment, then they will not negotiate with us. I hope we can get a great deal with the European Union but now the Government must prepare for a no deal.

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

An issue that is coming up more and more when I talk to constituents is concern about how the Brexit negotiations are going.

Call: 01874 690417

During the EU referendum campaign, we were repeatedly told by people on the leave side that the negotiations would be quick, straightforward and painless. However, 16 months on from that vote and major uncertainties still exist over key issues like our future trading relationship with the single market, migration and farming support. In fact, at time of writing, the talks between the UK and the EU have reached a “deadlock”.

For all your pest requirements

Whilst, clearly, both sides must share responsibility for this deadlock, it will come as little comfort for those waiting for answers about the future direction of our country. The deadlock also makes the chances of crashing out of the EU with no deal more likely. It is important to state the impact a no deal Brexit would have a rural area like this. Under WTO rules tariffs on agricultural products are as high as 40%. Last month a report, by the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), said a no deal Brexit could cut average farm profits by more than half. This won’t just hurt our farmers in Brecon and Radnorshire, it will affect every single household. It will increase food prices and decrease the amount of money in our rural economy. It is therefore vital that Theresa May’s government stops squabbling amongst itself and starts acting in the nation’s best interests. These talks are too important to fail and time is running out. If you would like to see a copy of the report by the AHDB, please contact my assembly office on 0300 200 7349 or email me at Kirsty.Williams@Assembly.Wales.

News from William Powell Welsh Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Talgarth At the time of writing, families and businesses in our area and the west of the British Isles, are being strongly advised to ‘batten down the hatches’ ahead of the arrival of tropical storm Orphelia. It serves as a salutary reminder that, in spite of the turbulence and difficulties that we, as individuals and nations, bring upon ourselves, nothing can trump the power of nature, when it comes to its sheer force and potential impact. This week sees the publication of a highly critical report into Children’s Services in Powys, which many readers will be all too familiar with, by the time the November Local Beacon is published. The Care and Social Services Inspectorate Report reveals a culture of weak corporate and political leadership and poor service management. It also makes clear that vulnerable children and young people in the care of our local authority have been exposed to risk of serious harm and sub-standard services. Potentially these failings will have an impact on those children and young people well into the future. Whilst it is heartening that the Inspectors praise front-line staff for their dedication and resilience in doing their best, the lack of clear leadership and sound management has evidently made their work almost impossible in recent years. The report leaves us in no doubt that these very disturbing findings stem from failures at a corporate and senior management level in Powys County Council. I agree strongly with my Welsh Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Cllr James Gibson-Watt, when he emphasises that all county councillors share a collective responsibility as corporate parents, to ensure that the Children’s Services Improvement Plan is fully implemented without delay. This will involve an intense, multi-agency approach and much hard work. Quite simply, the children and young people of Powys deserve better than this. It is down to us to work together, to ensure that significant improvement is achieved. If you would like to get in touch on this or any matter, please don’t hesitate to email me on: president@welshlibdems.org.uk

The Great Explorers Compensated for their lack of Confidence by going out and Discovering Africa (and Sometimes South America), Pondering upon their perceived Insignificance, the Great Explorers sought out remote, Primitive people who, de facto, Mattered less than they did, But, Having trekked for months Into the interior of Papua, For example, they came across Villages where no white man had Previously been encountered And yet, found, to their chagrin, That everyone within those Villages had positive roles to Play and were respected by Their fellows. Humiliated, The Great Explorers slunk Back to their bungalows In secluded parts of England, (Or sometimes of Scotland), Feeling even less self-assured than Previously, eventually becoming Street names and statues.
