Mention storytelling to people and often they will say: “You mean stories for children?” There are a group of adults who meet once a month to tell stories both traditional and from their lives. It is something that is a growing trend in this country and common in many others. Stories have been told ever since man had language. Every culture has its stories and stories are everywhere. The reason we watch films or a soap is for the story. We love listening to people who can recount a good tale of something that’s happened to them. Those of us who were lucky enough to have bedtime stories or story time at school will recall the pleasure of that. If you think storytelling is just light entertainment, think again. The stories that have survived for centuries are the stories that show us how to overcome adversity, that goodness triumphs and the monster can be slain. These stories connect us to where we came from and to our humanity. Listening to stories is an enriching experience. If you’d like to join us, whether to tell a story or to listen, we meet on the last Wednesday of every month except August and December at 7.30pm in the Sitting Room upstairs in the Blue Boar, Mill Street Ludlow. BUSINESS PROFILE

Have any hidden talents come to light since starting up? Managing people and learning to adlib much of the time when weather and other conditions change, for example.

Grove Tree & Hedgerow Services

When was the business started? October 2010. What made you set up the business? After finishing University, I wanted to do something other than just go to work a standard 8am - 5pm job. Where are you based? Clee Hill, Ludlow. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Yes, we would like to be twice the size we are. Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualifications up to date? We must undertake 5 NPTC certs every 5 years, and forestry, plus first aid every 3 years. What is your ideal job / client? Someone who wishes to look after their garden and understands that it is not cheap to do it properly if you have a large garden or large trees.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? Falling over on a track in the woods with two of my staff. (You had to be there...) Is there anything else you’d like people to know? It’s a much harder job than people imagine. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Driving past and seeing work that myself or my team have done every day. What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? I wish I had the self belief that I do now when I started. Sum your business up in five words: Talented, efficient, honest, hardworking, reliable.

What is your greatest achievement in your business? Taking down the large corsican pines in Tenbury Wells without any problem. Tight confined space, main road adjacent and above properties, much to organise! (Many people who drive through Tenbury would have known these very large iconic trees in the landscape). Two lessons having your own business has taught you? How to deal with all kinds of people, both clients and contractors, and how to be productive when bottom line profit is key, and understanding how to achieve this. What has been the biggest help to building up your business? Supportive friends and family. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: I would have started it when I was younger. List some goals on your business to-do list: Build a new office and garage on our business premises, buy a timber trailer with crane, get to the top of organic listings on google for the tri county area. Name one regret you have about your business? Sometimes being too kind to staff and customers to a fault.

A Teenage Wedding On 20th September 1301, the 14-year old Roger Mortimer married the 15-year old Joan de Geneville in Pembridge (based on careful research a group in Pembridge has recreated the wedding costumes that the young couple might have worn – see photo). That night a comet appeared that lasted for seven nights – a compelling symbol of important events to come. The marriage certainly had enormous significance for Ludlow as Joan was the heiress of Ludlow castle and half the town. This teenage marriage, therefore, brought Ludlow into the ownership of the Mortimer family, based at Wigmore. The exciting career of Roger Mortimer will feature in future articles – imprisoned in the Tower of London for defying the king, he became one of the few people to escape the Tower; in exile in France, he became the lover of the Queen of England and together they returned to England, where they forced the king to abdicate; for four years, Roger was the virtual ruler of the country before being executed as a traitor. As well as leaving his mark on the country, Roger Mortimer left a permanent legacy in Ludlow. At the height of his power he spent lavishly to provide Ludlow Castle with palatial accommodation, making the north range of buildings one of the finest in the country. Over 100 years later, it was the Mortimer inheritance that enabled a Mortimer grandson to win the throne and be crowned Edward IV, taking Ludlow into royal ownership. The Mortimer History Society is for everyone interested in medieval history, the Mortimers and the Welsh Marches. In 2019, the Society is celebrating its 10th anniversary and to mark the occasion has organised two special conferences with expert speakers on the importance of the Mortimers in our national history – please see advert. www.mortimerhistorysociety.org.uk www.ludlowhistory.co.uk Photo: Clothes designed and produced by Ann Butcher and Robert Anderson, photo © 2019

Better your health

Christine Roberts started ‘Christine’s Holistic Therapies’ in February 2019 after finishing a 28 year public service career in London. During that time, she studied Massage, Reflexology, Anatomy & Physiology at Jade College in Bedford, to become a qualified practitioner, after being awarded the appropriate ITEC Diplomas. In June 2018 Christine obtained a qualification in Facial Skincare with an Associated Beauty Therapists accredited certificate. These treatments either separately or in combination can support an individual to achieve balance in their physical, mental and emotional life. It’s when we have a sense of well-being that we feel more comfortable, energised and it’s easier for us to be effective in our everyday life. Christine provides a mobile female only home service within a 5 mile radius of Ludlow, but can travel further by special arrangement. This personal service means there are no transport issues, no waiting outside a treatment room, no feeling under pressure to purchase products not really wanted, no pressure to leave after treatment due to another client waiting but to feel completely at ease in the comfort of your own home and in a position to remain relaxed for longer. When Christine meets, or when shes speaks on the phone, or via email she can discuss those health issues that are causing concerns and discuss what kind of holistic approach is likely to be effective. Reflexology - Reflexology is an alternative, non invasive and holistic treatment which involves massage and pressure, targeting certain points and areas of the feet using thumb, finger and hand techniques. Reflexology targets a system of zones and reflex areas on the feet that are linked to different parts of the body. This unblocks energy pathways and benefits the whole body. All parts of the feet are massaged so that all the body areas are targeted.

Reflexology is an extremely relaxing, safe, effective and non invasive way to better health and well-being.

Benefits of Reflexology - Balances the body system, improves sleeping pattern, improves circulation, induces deep relaxation, induces a feeling of well being, revitalises your energy, reduces stress, stronger immune system, stimulates and restores mental alertness. Massage - the alleviation of stress & aching muscles Whether at work or retired many of us now spend increasing amounts of time at a computer, hunched over a desk, resulting in an increase in the number of back, neck and shoulder issues. Massage tones, eases tight muscles and improves the circulation of blood. Benefits of massage - Reduces mental stress, promotes quality sleep, reduces anxiety, enhances self image, provides a feeling of well being, calms the nervous system, reduces heart rate, relaxes the body, stretches connective tissue, relieves tired and aching muscles, improves muscle tone, speeds recovery from injury, improves skin tone, increases blood and lymph circulation, promotes deeper breathing. Express Facial - Facial with facial massage Promotes a more fresh and youthful appearance of the skin and muscles of the face. Also benefits your entire system through the promotion of better sleep and relaxation. The facial includes: skin analysis, cleansing, exfoliation, massage, mask and moisturiser. Why do clients go to Christine for treatment? To adopt a healthier lifestyle with treatments to help to reduce pain or weaknesses in the lower back, assist in reducing stress and anxiety of daily life. Improve restful sleep, ease muscle pain, to increase circulation and to boost the body’s immune system.

Repair or Landfill? Riddles of the month - for fun! Back in the day, folk repaired ‘stuff ’ – it saved money and gave a ‘feel-good factor’ before the term had been invented!

Nowadays, awareness of the harm plastic does to the planet, and a growing reluctance at throwing something away which adds to landfill, is reenergising some of that ‘fix it’ mentality and Repair Cafés offer a perfect opportunity!

1. What has a tongue but cannot talk and gets around a lot but cannot walk? 2. I have eight to spare and am covered with hair. What am I?

How do they work? Owners bring a range of items, either broken or not working as they used to – and volunteer repairers bring a range of skills, experiences AND enthusiasm – and do their best to send those items home again for a longer life.

1. A shoe. 2. A cat.

Distributors wanted We require reliable distributors for our magazine

There’s no charge but donations are requested to cover costs. Any surplus goes to the Furniture Scheme which loans its electrical testing equipment and shares a similar ethos.

What do you want?

What at first might appear a bit rude is actually a pertinent question. It applies to just about every aspect of life and is one we should ask ourselves regularly. When it comes to health and fitness it is key that we know what we want or more accurately what our goal or goals is or are. Only once you know your destination can you really begin to start your journey (see February’s issue page 8 for help setting goals). So basically if you want to improve your running you need to run more. Spending countless hours lifting heavy weights in front of the gym mirror is not really going to benefit your running. Conversely, if you want to enter strongman competitions you probably won’t benefit from focusing all your efforts on running every day. Most of my clients’ initial goals, unsurprisingly, are to reduce their body fat, increase their muscle and/or strength and improve their overall health. In many ways this is actually a much harder task than simply training for a specialist event ie a 10km run or an amateur body building contest. Allow me explain that statement. Let’s take runners for example as, fantastically, we have rather a lot in Ludlow. If you are a runner you will mainly run. If you are a serious runner you might also engage in some circuit training strength training and flexibility training. These latter forms of exercise will probably not add up to more than 15% of your total training volume though. In contrast, if you are trying to improve many aspects of your fitness you will need to train many aspects of your fitness. So you will regularly undertake strength training, flexibility training, Long Steady State Aerobic Training (LSD) and high intensity circuit training (HIIT) in roughly equal proportions. At this point I imagine you appreciate that devising and implementing a training programme that best suits your goals is fundamental to achieving them. One principle that all training should incorporate is that of progressive overload. Progressive overload

is defined as the gradual increase of stress placed upon the body during exercise training. Huh? In other words, gradually, you have to lift more or run further if you want to be able to: lift more or run further. It sounds blindingly obvious but all too often we forget this principle because it is easier to stay within our comfort zone and keep lifting the same weights or running the same distance at the same pace. In the next few issues I will be writing more in-depth articles on how to improve the following aspects of your fitness: Strength, Power, Hypertrophy, Cardio-Vascular, Flexibility, Nutrition. In the meantime enjoy what you are doing and if you would like further guidance please get in touch with me. Andy Article supplied by Andy Silvey - Andali Fitness

Lucton School Lucton is your local independent coeducational day and boarding school, offering small classes, talented and committed teachers, a friendly atmosphere and a wonderful rural location which combine to provide an outstanding, all-round educational experience. An Oxford University admissions tutor commented that the typical thing about Lucton students is that there is no typical student – they are very much individuals! What they do have in common is that they leave school confident in their abilities and strengths, ready to embrace opportunities and play their part. They also achieve excellent results at A-level and GCSE and secure an impressive range of university places. The School is justly proud of its remarkable added-value scores and its ability to draw out the full potential of every individual. Founded in 1708, the School is set in a safe, healthy location in 55 acres of beautiful Herefordshire countryside. There is a good mix of day pupils, weekly boarders and full boarders. Many team and individual

sports are offered and boarders enjoy a wealth of weekend activities – sporting, cultural, social and just good fun. Senior boarders have individual rooms – although some younger ones prefer to share – and pastoral care at Lucton is second to none. Facilities include junior and senior libraries, science laboratories, ICT rooms, a design and technology workshop, sports hall, tennis courts, indoor swimming pool, many games fields and Equestrian Centre. Senior students enjoy their own sixthform centre, including library, IT suite, comfortable common room and quiet study area. Admission can take place at any time of year by interview and assessment. To learn more about Lucton school, please email admissions@ luctonschool.org or call them on 01568 782000.

BUSINESS PROFILE

solicitor, someone really in the know, it’s a real nod of appreciation that you’re doing something well.

Holters Modern Estate and Letting Agents When was the business started? 2013. What made you set up the business? We realised that the way in which people buy and sell property had changed, but the industry hadn’t. People were paying a lot of money for poor marketing, terrible customer service and aspects of property sales which were no longer needed. We wanted to deliver top quality marketing and first-class customer service, while at the same time offer excellent value for money, and if the huge amount of referrals we get from previous clients is anything to go by, I think that’s exactly what we achieved. Where are you based? We have an office in Ludlow, but cover all the way from Brecon to Shrewsbury and everywhere in between. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? We’re not looking to necessarily grow our coverage area, but we do aim to increase our market share as our reputation continues to grow. What is your ideal job / client? While we are happy to act for anyone who needs us, we do have a real knack of selling properties other agents have struggled with. It’s always satisfying to successfully oversee a sale and hand over the keys on moving day, but when you know you’ve done that for someone who has spent 3 years trying to sell and you’ve managed to get them moving, without having to lower their price, that really puts a smile on your face.

Have you won any awards in your business? We don’t really go in for estate agency awards as we question the legitimacy of them. Any award system where you’re not nominated but instead pay hundreds, if not thousands of pounds to enter yourself, surely raises a few questions. I can think of about ten different agents who claim to be the regions number one and say they have the award to prove it, they can’t all be right! The only validation we care about are the amazing reviews we receive from people who have actually used our services, we treat every single one of them as if we’ve won the gold! Two lessons having your own business has taught you? 1. Anytime you ever said you were busy prior to running your own business, you really weren’t. 2. Anytime you ever said you were stressed prior to running your own business, you really weren’t. What has been the biggest help to building up your business? The biggest help to building our business has to be our clients. Holters started as two young guys trying to make a difference, we had a tiny budget and because we wanted to start ethically, didn’t take any business with us from our previous employer, we literally started from nothing. Very quickly though we managed to turn our clients into fans, fans who would shout about us at every opportunity, six years later and still our biggest source of business (by quite some margin) is word of mouth referrals.Without our amazing clients we’d be nothing. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: Without question, the sales process. It’s so long and drawn out with zero protection for either the buyer or seller. One person’s decision in among a long sale chain can literally wipe out thousands of pounds in an instant, let alone the incredible stress

What is your greatest achievement in your business? I don’t know what I could point to as our single greatest achievement, I think it’s just an accumulation of things. Our great track record of selling properties which have seemed unsalable, our incredibly low fall thorough rate (which is far below the national average), or even having sold properties for various other people working in the industry. It’s always nice to win the instruction to sell any property, but when it comes from someone working for another estate agent, or from a local

it causes. It’s an awful system which needs to be carefully navigated, which is why it’s so important to have both a good agent and a good solicitor. List five goals on your business to-do list: We only ever have two goals 1. Sell more houses 2. Help more people. Name one regret you have about your business? I don’t think we really have any regrets. We’re in a good place and have worked hard to earn our reputation, everything we’ve done so far has gotten us to this point so it’d be hard to look back and change anything. Sure, there have been some mistakes along the way, but if you don’t make mistakes you don’t learn and if you don’t learn you can’t grow, as a company or as an individual. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting up? Haha, well I think Will’s found he’s got an excellent head for figures that he never knew he had previously and I’ve found I can survive for long periods of time on little or no sleep. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? There is one thing which springs immediately to mind, but you’d never be able to print it. The lady who thought Will was me was quite funny though, he was too polite to correct her on his valuation,

so he had to spend the next four months answering to the name Karl! Is there anything else you’d like people to know? We’re honest, even before we started we promised ourselves Will Hodnett we’d always give our clients our true and honest opinions and advice, even if it’s to the detriment of ourselves or our business. What have you done today to make you feel proud? I’ve cooked my children breakfast and got them ready for school, which I do pretty much every day. I’m Karl Morgan obviously very proud of Holters, but I’m an even prouder dad! What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? That you can’t do everything yourself. Sum your business up in five words: Honest, Hardworking, Professional, Flexible, Bespoke (not part of the five words, but we know every person and every property are individual and with us, they get treated that way).
