Welcome to the first issue of Local Ludlow. This is your community magazine. Local businesses, services, and you the readers will determine how this publication evolves. Tell us what you’d like to read about each month. Perhaps you’re a local business and like the sound of being delivered to every home and business in Ludlow town on a monthly basis? Get in touch about advertising. The more advertising we have booked in, the more articles we can offer. So who are we? Read all about us on pages 12 & 13. Check out our existing publications Wye Local (established in 2006) and Local Beacon (established in 2009): you can find them online at Issuu.com. These magazines for different areas started out just like this one... today they are booming and very popular with readers and advertisers. Our motto is simply to encourage local people to use what’s on their doorstep. Money spent locally will stay locally. July looks a busy month for Ludlow. The annual Green Festival, page 3.The Morris Dance Spectacular, page 4. Ludlow Dog Day, page 8. And a bit further afield, the Royal Welsh Show, page 9. From page 15 you will find weekly and monthly events and classes. There’s something for everyone. Local company Fresh PCs Consultancy have provided an interesting article, see page 2. The Cliffe at Dinham have provided a very tasty recipe – I’m no Delia but will certainly try it out. If it goes wrong, perhaps I’ll book a table with them instead. Thank you to every single business who has showed their support in our first issue. If you would like to be included in our August issue, see page 13 for prices and all the other information you need to know. We’re a friendly, passionate team and really hope to provide you with a informative and delightful publication month on month. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x PS You’ll see on page 14 we’re after a small team of distributors. If you’re reliable and have a few hours free towards the end of the month, every month – get in touch. Computers: Shut Down or Sleep?

Most homes are trying to reduce power costs by turning off lights and appliances, but do the same rules apply to computers? After all, it requires more than flicking a switch on your way out the door. Some people believe you should shut down after every use to save wear and tear, others believe you should never shut down your computer - ever. Others simply want to make sure the pages and apps they left open are still there waiting for them. So, who’s right and what are they really doing? Back when computers were clunky behemoths that took a long time to start, you’d go nuts at the person who shut it down when it was your turn. If you have an older computer, maybe you still do. Modern computers actually have two options for their downtime: Shut down or sleep. When it shuts down, the system goes through and closes any open programs (often prompting you to save first), then gradually cuts power to all components. It’s a methodical process that seems quite fast to us but is actually made of 100+ intentionally ordered steps. If there’s a sudden blackout or you hold the power button until it turns off, it means the steps aren’t followed and damage is possible. The second option is to put your computer to sleep. This can be triggered by an automated timeout or a user click.Your system uses a special type of memory called RAM to hold all your running programs exactly as you left them but use minimal power. The hard drive stops spinning, the graphics card lets the screen go black, and even the system fan slows to become almost silent. When you wake it by moving the mouse or pressing a key, it ‘wakes’ again almost instantly. Reasons to Shut Down - A switched off computer isn’t drawing power which is a tick for the environment. But shutting down is about more than saving power. It can sometimes give improved stability over a machine that’s been running for days/weeks.This is because every time you shut down, you give your computer a chance to clear out all temporary junk files it’s been carrying in memory. It also triggers various health checks on startup that may otherwise be missed, important routines like checking for updates or scanning for viruses. It’s certainly more convenient to spend an extra minute booting up than lose everything to a cyber-attack. For older computers or those under heavy strain like gaming or video editing, shutting down also provides a necessary

chance for the components to cool down. Reasons to Sleep - Speed is the big selling point here. You can literally sit down and start working where you left off without the delays of bootup, finding your program, opening your saved files, scrolling down... it’s all right there and ready. You can even tell it how long to wait before putting itself into sleep mode, just in case you get called away and forget. Windows updates still run in the background, so that’s okay, but it’s important to note that your computer might get stuck waiting for a reboot that never comes. Those pending updates may stack up, ineffective until it either forces a reboot or becomes unstable enough that you give in to a restart. The best method is - Since the whole point of having a computer is that it’s ready to work when you are, we recommend shutting down at night when it’s definitely not in use but using sleep mode during the day. Updates will get all the rebooting they need, memory is refreshed for the new day, and you’ll get the best of both worlds - speed and stability. We can help your computer boot faster, give us a call on 01584 517234. Article Supplied by Fresh PCs Consultancy

Let’s go Green! The annual Green Festival in Ludlow will be returning to Castle Square on Sunday 8th July from 10am 4pm. The day will be brimming with lots of free family activities. This year the festival’s focus is on raising awareness about how we need to reduce the consumption of plastic in our everyday lives.

Refurbishment and up-grade of sash windows

Help them on the day, by completing a giant plastic mosaic made with plastic tops with pupils from Ludlow School and meet their brand new Green Festival Mascot created from Ludlow School pupils’ drawings made by local clothes designer Clare Bremner of ‘Julian Road’. The Green Festival Mascot will be parading and announcing activities on the loud speaker throughout the day. So it promises to be another fun filled Sunday in the centre of the town with live music from many local bands alongside a Ludlow Brewery bar, surely a recipe for dancing!

Morris dance spectacular

Property Department Leominster Gabbs offers a friendly and approachable high quality residential and agricultural conveyancing service. We have served the Marches area over many years and we provide a considerable degree of local knowledge which is invaluable in buying a property.

There will be more Morris dancers than you can shake a proverbial stick at in Ludlow and surrounding areas during the weekend of 7th/8th July. Local side,The Leominster Morris, are hosting seven guest teams from across the country for a weekend dancing in venues throughout the region: in Ludlow, Leominster, Hereford, and in several of North Herefordshire’s Black & White villages. Dubbed Marches Morris Festival, the event showcases three different styles of Morris dancing from across England: Border which is native to Shropshire and Herefordshire, the ubiquitous Cotswold from Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire and North-West danced in clogs from the mill towns of Lancashire and Cheshire. The host team are celebrating the 35th anniversary since the revival of a Morris side in Leominster, the previous side having foundered before World War II, and are looking forward to sharing their birthday with guests who come from as far away as Sheffield and Reading. With a membership of some 25 dancers and musicians, the Leominster Morris are active in the region year-round, dancing at events such as Tenbury Applefest, Shobdon Food and Flying Festival, Clun Green Man and at many of the region’s pubs. They would welcome new members either as dancers or musicians at their practices in Leominster: see the website www.leominstermorris.org for further information. The schedule of dancing for 7 and 8 July is as follows (check the website www.leominstermorris.org for more detailed information): Ludlow: including Castle Square, Mill-on-the-Green and Ludlow Brewery, Saturday 10.30am – 1.00pm Leominster: including Corn Square and The Grange, Saturday 1.30pm – 4.00pm Black & White Villages Eardisland, Pembridge and Weobley: Saturday 4.30pm – 6.00pm Hereford: including High Town and Hereford Cathedral, Sunday 11.00am – 2.00pm Photo: Guest side, Customs & Exiles from Reading, Whitby Folk Festival, 2017

BUSINESS PROFILE

Cariads Local Ltd When was the business started? The first magazine launched in Hay-on-Wye in 2006. What made you set up the business? Hay-on-Wye was my home-town: there were things going on in the area but there was nowhere to promote them. If promoted well, the events would be well attended and were more likely to be repeated. I’m a social lass! I also found that local residents were calling in tradesmen from outside the area when there were plenty of good people they could have used on their doorstep. These tradesmen and women just needed somewhere cost-effective to advertise. I then found that this applied to most businesses in the area.

coffee and cake. The Christmas do takes place with good food, plenty of booze and dancing! Two lessons having your own business has taught you? If something doesn’t go to plan, just take a deep breath and decide how you’ll solve it. It doesn’t need to be stressful. Tomorrow is a new day. Delegate, delegate, delegate! At first I thought I had to do everything myself. Now I delegate to a team member who can often do it better. We all have our strengths and weaknesses – it’s important to realise what these are. What is your ideal job/client? A happy one who takes pleasure in their work as much as we do. Oh and and one who pays on time! What is your greatest achievement in your business? Working around my young family. I have a 14-year-old stepson, a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. Going back to work after two weeks’ maternity with both babies was tough. Meeting a deadline when one of the children has been up all night projectile vomiting is hard. I’m sure other working parents reading this will relate! Many of us do it and when we nail working and parenting, for me it feels like the best achievement ever.

Where are you based? The office is just on the English/Welsh border. Do you have ambitions to grow bigger? All my energy right now is in making a success of Local Ludlow. I visit the town often and love it. It has a bustling high street, and super eating and drinking places. A really good vibe. My aim over the next year is to make this publication as successful as my first baby, the Wye Local.

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? A wonderful, loyal team. Back in 2006 it was just me. I did the sales, design, delivering, accounts and admin. As the magazine grew and I decided I wanted to launch other publications, I took on my first team member Clare in 2008. Now, in 2018, Clare is still with me, along with Davina (accounts), Robert (events and deliveries), Jess (design and proofing), Laura (sales and proofing), Nicole (design and admin), Gill (credit control) and

Have you won any awards in your business? No. To be honest we don’t have time for awards. Our publications are monthly, meaning as soon as we put one month to print, it’s time to start on the next. Sudoko

(Continued on from page 12) a small team of delivery people. List three goals on your business to-do list: 1. Make Local Ludlow a success. By that I mean make it a publication that local residents look forward to receiving each month. With businesses advertising month on month, as they get a great response. And contributors providing useful and interesting articles. 2. Launch our website. It always seems to be on the bottom of our list! 3. File that huge pile of paperwork in the actual filing cabinet, rather than just leaving it on top!

Place the numbers so that each row, column and box contains the numbers 1-9...good luck.

Name one regret you have about your business: I don’t have any. If we’ve done anything that’s received bad feedback, I ask the team to correct it. It’s not a regret, life’s one big learning adventure.

What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? When reviewing an activity centre I screamed the place down on the zip wire. The owner still ribs me for it now, years later. And my stepson was extremely embarrassed. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? I suppose just that we want to help local businesses. We work with businesses, we don’t just take your money for the advert and run. We like to offer features to accompany your advert – this promotes you further and it makes our magazines unique and interesting to the readers, so it’s a win-win. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Remembered my daughter’s swimming kit. It’s deadline day, so it had a 50/50 chance of making it to school! What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? You are always representing your business. So a night out, a few ciders on board, there’ll always be someone who wants to talk shop!
