Firewood explained Burning firewood logs is a much more environmentally friendly process than burning other fossil fuels such as coal, oil or gas. Burning logs releases CO2 into the atmosphere. But providing a tree is planted to replace each tree burnt, the same amount of CO2 will be absorbed by the tree as it grows, so the net release of CO2 into the atmosphere will be zero. Kiln Dried Logs: Kiln Dried Logs burn hotter than seasoned logs or green logs - with less moisture contained in the kiln dried log, less energy is required to burn off residual moisture and therefore more energy converts into heat. Kiln Dried Logs are much more efficient - the higher temperatures generated by kiln dried logs mean that everything is burnt, even the gasses released by the wood. In a cooler fire, these would simply escape up the chimney. They are also more economical because they burn hotter and more efficiently, you use less of them to achieve the same heat output. Kiln Dried Logs are better for the environment as they produce much less smoke when burnt compared to wet unseasoned wood, leading to cleaner air. Kiln Dried Logs help to prolong the life of your appliance - the higher temperatures burn off the water and the sap remaining in the wood, stopping it from building up on the inside of your appliance as tar, which over time, can foul and rust your appliance leading to a loss of efficiency.

and 50%. Because of the lower moisture content seasoned logs will burn hotter and more efficiently than unseasoned logs. For the same reason Kiln Dried Logs at approximately 20% moisture, burn hotter and more efficiently still. So if you see a local farmer offering a bag of wood at a bargain price, you might not be getting a bargain, you might end up clogging up your chimney with tar, and maybe your living space with smoke, all with very little output heat. Don’t forget to stock up before winter arrives.

Unseasoned logs: Unseasoned logs can be burnt, but only on open fires and even then it’s not recommended. You wouldn’t throw water on a fire and expect good results, but that is exactly what you are doing if you try and burn an unseasoned log that may contain up to 60% water. It is also not good for the environment as wet, unseasoned logs give off considerably more smoke as well compared to kiln dried logs or smokeless fuel, leading to lower air quality levels. The difference between a seasoned and an unseasoned log: Unseasoned logs or green logs basically means that a log has been freshly cut and is likely to have a high moisture content - i.e. above 50%. A seasoned log however, has been cut and dry stored for a long period of time so that the moisture content is considerably less - between 30

BUSINESS PROFILE

Sue Kelsall Smithy Studio Name: Sue Kelsall. Smithy Studio, Brampton Bryan, Bucknell, Shropshire SY7 0DH. When was the business started? Smithy opened its doors at Easter 2018, after 3 months of intensely chilly refurbishment. It was a labour of love with a touch of madness. What made you set up the business? The Old Forge was cold, dark, damp and unloved. I was given the opportunity to breathe new life into the space, this quickly happened once the wood burner was installed along with wall to wall carpeting and ambient lighting to enhance the goods on display.

some amazing people - soggy cyclists on their way from John O`Groats to Lands End, Queen Victoria look-alikes who work with schoolchildren, psychotherapists, healers, holiday-makers, from as far afield as N.Z, the USA and Russia. And of course my wonderful band of makers, Danielle Flowers (jewellery), Dave Mullin (ceramics), Pete Smith (blacksmith), Lottie O’Leary (stone-carver), Hannah Davis (bespoke tweed), Samuel Bebb (painter), and Howard Lewis (artist in wood), to name a few…

Smithy was just waiting to become a rural gallery, where I could showcase local makers, of which there are many, as this area is rich in talented artists and makers.

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? My tenacity! And the support of friends and makers (BIG thanks to you all).

Where are you based? The Old Blacksmiths Forge, part of the Harley estate in Brampton Bryan, home to a variety of artists and makers.

List five goals on your business to-do list: To share Smithy Studio opening hours next year, by involving artists/ makers, so that I can have the occasional weekend off.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? I aim to become a part of the local community and become recognised as a place where you can find something unique while feeling relaxed enough to mooch among the varied selection of locally made crafts, design-led home wares and wonderful paintings.

To become known as a go-to gallery for that special ‘something’, establish continuing links with makers, and promote ‘new’ talent.

Two lessons having your own business has taught you? 1. Always open on time... and stay open until closing, consistency is everything! 2. Chat with every visitor, make them feel welcome and they will no doubt talk to someone else. There is nothing like word of mouth. What is your ideal customer? The one who relaxes on the Smithy Studio sofa, and has time to notice the quirky stuff. It’s a feast for the eyes, we have an amazing selection of beautiful handmade wares. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Transforming an unloved space into a warm and welcoming Aladdin’s cave brimming with goodies. Meeting

Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Having a Fine Art degree and design background proves really useful when explaining the skills involved in making. For me, it’s crucial that prospective purchasers have the ‘story’ of how much work goes into a hand-made product. We live in a throwaway society and it is important to me that I can explain the value of a handcrafted item. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? Being involved in Brampton Bryan Scarecrow Day. It’s an annual event in the village, when we are encouraged to make a scarecrow and the village is overrun with visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the ‘other side’ of life on the estate, the manor house and castle. This year’s theme was Music and it was very entertaining to see the range of music-related scarecrows. Smithy Studio had its very

BUSINESS PROFILE

Twyford Cookers of Leominster Rose & Ian Norman set up Twyford Cookers of Leominster in 1994, with a love of AGA cookers. Twyford Cookers employs 13 people since becoming an AGA distributor in 2014, and covering a post code area including Powys, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and parts of Shropshire.Their primary customers are discerning cooks and homemakers, from those who love a comforting country kitchen to fans of the modern classic kitchen style. When was the business started? In 1994 after we moved to Herefordshire and set up Twyford Farm as our business and home base. We renovated the farmhouse to incorporate a large farmhouse kitchen and installed a four-oven oil-fired AGA cooker which was renovated by my husband. In the early days our customers visited the farm and my husband renovated the AGAs in the attached barn. My son joined us in the business shortly afterwards. The business grew from our good reputation and happy customers. We eventually moved the business from the farm to a factory unit in Moreton-on-Lugg. What made you set up the business? We had run an antique shop in Cheltenham, specializing in antique fireplaces. We experienced two recessions during that time, and decided to move to Herefordshire to start a new life. Where are you based? We are now based on Leominster Enterprise Estate, loving our wonderful showroom with lots of room for customers to park. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? We are currently engaged in developing our showroom to encompass built-in cookers. This is Phase 3 of our expansion. We are a Rayburn Heat Centre, and stock AGA cookers, Masterchef, Rangemaster, Lacanche, La Cornue Fe, Brittania, Fisher Paykel and Falcon cookers, and many other AGA related products. We have an AGA cookshop and a Betty Twyford homewares shop at the same location. We also still renovate a small number of selected and newer AGA cookers for those customers who are on a kitchen budget. We also offer 0% finance which has been a tremendous help for some of our customers.

Have you won any awards in your business? Awarded and authorized by AGA to be their official renovator nationwide in the late 1990s.This enabled our business to grow. Do you need to do any annual training to keep up your qualification up to date? We frequently send our staff to France to receive training from the Lacanche factory, and to the AGA headquarters in Telford. Our Rayburn engineers attend the Telford factory for updates in technology. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? To be prepared to work past the 5pm shut off to catch up on the day, and sometimes to work on a Sunday! To plan, to seek new products and knowledge and to be understanding of our customers’ needs. We are always polite and we go the extra mile when it comes to giving the right advice and service. We ensure that people have a good experience when they visit our showroom and we offer them cake and biscuits and coffee or tea when they arrive. What is your ideal job/client? We love to identify the needs of our customers – often our customers are contemplating a kitchen make-over, and we offer four different kitchen companies to give them the advice should they need it. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Growing our business from very small beginnings, and surviving the ups and downs of the British economy. We are a family-run business. My husband is CEO, I am the marketing director, my son is the technical director and my daughter is our resident cook. We run cooking classes and demonstrations for wouldbe customers to help them gain confidence in their choice of AGA or Rayburn or Rangecooker. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about your business? We’ve developed our own range of kitchen textiles, enamelware and homewares with our Betty Twyford brand. The collection is related to running a domestic kitchen. We’re focused on creating our range to be British made and made in Herefordshire.

2 One-Man Plays! Walking football When first performed, The Confessions of Jon-Jak Crusoe received glowing reviews. “A brilliantly written - Birmingham Mail

tragi-comic

monologue.”

While The Stage wrote: “Holds the audience spellbound with a solo performance of great virtuosity.” Crusoe is a would-be writer struggling to pen a work of genius inspired by his muse, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, ‘the frog scribbler’, but is unable to get past the first line. He rails hilariously but despairingly against his fate.

We received a letter from a reader, Mr Des Palmer. Des has Vascular Dementia. He’s enjoyed Walking Football that was organised by a local man George at Rockspring Community Centre. However due to the lack in numbers, these sessions have now stopped. Des is appealing for any local people with Dementia interested in attending Walking Football? If the numbers are there, Des and George will be able to start this up again. Please contact Des on 01584 877021.

The Unkindest Cut is a new play, which Gareth has written specially for local actor, Peter Hayter, after seeing his performances as Falstaff and in Alan Bennet’s Talking Heads. Peter plays an actor, consumed by a lifelong desire to play Marc Antony. Alas, throughout his acting life he is condemned to playing merely walk-ons and bit parts. Until one night, a bloody and hilarious conclusion allows him to achieve his dream.

Self Assessment Tax Returns The deadline for online submission of selfassessment tax returns for tax year 2017/18 is 31st January 2019, unless filing a paper return, which needed submitting by 31st October 2018. This applies to individuals who are self-employed, partnerships, shareholders in receipt of dividends in excess of ÂŁ5,000, directors and those with rental income to name a few. HMRC issue penalties for late submission of selfassessment returns even where there is no tax liability or the tax due was paid on time. Penalties increase further if a tax return becomes more than 3 months overdue with daily penalties increasing to a maximum of ÂŁ900 plus the potential for tax geared penalties ranging from 5% to 100% of the tax liability in more serious cases. If you require any assistance with the preparation or submission before the 31st January 2019 filing deadline D.R.E & Co. Chartered Accountants can help. They adopt a friendly approach with their local Ludlow

team offering a prompt and professional service. Alongside more corporate level advice, they provide a full compliance service for preparation of personal and trust tax returns. Their skilled team can advise on any specific queries you may have and also assist with tax efficient planning you may require relating to income tax, capital gains or inheritance tax. Lasting Powers of Attorney (‘LPAs’) What are they? These are legal documents which are needed when you or someone close to you is diagnosed with dementia or other illnesses or conditions which affect a person’s ability to make decisions. There are two types of LPA, one for financial decisions and one for health and care decisions. Why are they needed? They are needed to ensure that, if you are unable to make decisions, the person you trust is able to act on your behalf to prevent them having practical difficulties in running your affairs. The LPA for financial decisions allows the person you choose, known as an ‘Attorney’,

At the very least, however, they need to be made while you are still fit and well as they are quite complex and require a lot of thought and care. Ideally, they are made at the same time as making your Will. How do I find out more? For more information, and a no obligation discussion, please contact Janna Vigar, Solicitor at mfg Solicitors LLP at 9 Corve Street, Ludlow, SY8 1DE by telephoning on 01584 873156 or emailing janna.vigar@mfgsolicitors.com.
