Record first year intake at Lucton The September 2018 Reception Year intake at Lucton School was a new record high. As 17 children joined the first year group in the school, the decision was taken to have two separate classes, one of 8 children and one of 9, both with their own qualified teacher. It is obvious that a growing number of parents are recognising the value of small classes, talented and committed teachers, a friendly atmosphere and a wonderful rural location that combine to provide an outstanding, all-round educational experience. Lucton School is set in a safe, healthy location in 55 acres of beautiful Herefordshire countryside. There is a good mix of day pupils, weekly boarders and full boarders. After they reach Year 3, day pupils have the opportunity to experience Flexi-boarding, where parents often find it helps at times, saving on babysitting for events and reducing the travel and time involved in the school run. Many team and individual sports and activities are

offered and pastoral care at Lucton is second to none. An Oxford University admissions tutor commented that the typical thing about Lucton students is that there is no typical student – they are very much individuals! What they do have in common is their confidence in their abilities and strengths, they are ready to embrace opportunities. They also achieve excellent results at A-level and GCSE and secure impressive university places. The School is justly proud of its remarkable added-value scores and its ability to draw out the full potential of every individual. To find out more about Lucton School, please contact the admissions department on 01568 782000 or email admissions@luctonschool.org to receive a prospectus or to arrange for your own personal tour of the school. Alternatively, take a look at www.luctonschool.org, the school’s website.

Q&A with: Loudwater Studio

Loudwater Studio

Getting people of all abilities creative in Ludlow

01584 877272 16A Burway Trading Estate, Bromfield Road, Ludlow, Shropshire, SY8 1EN Reg Charity No: 1017893

a better location, with more individual spaces to be creative than we have at present (and a bit more parking), but currently we’re doing all we can to utilise the space we have. When did Loudwater Studio open its doors? Believe it or not Loudwater opened its doors over 20 years ago (more about that later). Where are you based? We’re based on the Burway Trading Estate, at the side of Ludlow Motors, so when you come to visit, don’t worry that you seem to be travelling through the car dealership, keep going - you’ll find us. Why was Loudwater Studio set up? Loudwater is part of the Charity Vision Homes Association, which supports adults with disabilities to lead full independent lives. The studio was initially set up to provide those people with a creative space to enjoy when they could, and was always seen to be a space available for the local community. What is your average customer / student? I can’t say we have an average visitor as we offer activities for everyone: school holiday activities for children; specific groups for those children who are home educated; activities and groups for disabled adults; creative workshops every Friday; and running specialised groups such as pottery for adults, and Knit and Natter groups in the local community are just some of the things we do. So no day is average and we’re meeting new people all the time. What future plans do you have? To keep on doing what we’re doing, offering as many different creative activities, to as many people as possible. Do you plan to move or expand? We’d love to find

What is your greatest achievement? I have to say the way we see people relax by just walking through the door is wonderful and really makes what we do worthwhile. However this year we’ve had a huge project running focusing on the 143 local soldiers lost during WWI, this has seen us work with lots of different people from the local community not only making ceramic poppies that were initially planted at St. Laurence’s Church, but also the creation of banners and more for a big display in Ludlow Library. We have received so much positive feedback from this project that it’s been amazing to be part of it and see people’s reactions. What has been the most surprising thing you’ve witnessed at Loudwater Studio? Just how far people will travel to have a creative day at one of the workshops we run on Fridays. So far we’ve welcomed people from Newcastle-Under-Lyme, Northampton, Manchester and the Brecon Beacons to name but a few. It’s interesting to see how people have heard of us from far away, yet some of the local community have no idea we exist. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: To make it easier for us to find! Because of our location behind Ludlow Motors people really struggle as they can’t quite believe that they need to drive through the cars to get to us, and the entrance is quite small. Sum Loudwater up in 4 words: Creative Fun for Everyone.

A new Antiques and Fine Art Business in Ludlow The declining health of the high street is the subject of daily reports and you would have to be just a little wary to start any new venture let alone your first retail business, but this is what I have done. Not only that, I have chosen an antiques shop, which I am assured are in terminal decline. I have had the usual observations and encouragement. “You must be crazy”, “If it’s really what you want to do”, to my wife’s “why not? You’re enthusiastic and you enjoy it. Go for it... and it’ll keep you out of trouble”. To open any shop, it needs careful consideration, but an antiques & fine art business on a pedestrian side street, probably suggests madness. This in Ludlow which has seen a decline in antique shops and art galleries from nearly 30 in 2000 to less than a third of that number today. Time will tell about my sanity, but early trading indications are surprisingly good. Having spent much of my life in industry my only connection with antiques and fine art had been as a collector and admirer. A move to Ludlow and a smaller property and, at my age, the accumulation of the inevitable inherited items led me to reconsider much of what now occupied my home and storage. I started out three years ago selling some of these items, in a Ludlow collective. This gave me much needed experience of the trade, introductions to valuable contacts and clients and inspired me to want more. The opportunity arose to open an independent shop selling antiques and fine art and SwS Antiques was born. SwS is an abbreviation of Sustainability with Style Ltd., a company which I have owned for some years. In the light of current thinking it seems highly appropriate for a new antiques business. Albeit that a Welsh client recently advised that sws is the Welsh for kiss. I suppose it could have been a lot worse. The shop is located in Parkway, Ludlow a pedestrian walkway to the Library, Car Park and Station and joins a small number of independent retail and service businesses. A trip to an antique shop or gallery is no longer exclusively the province of the wealthy elite. With the advancement in technology, there has been a significant change in the way people view, buy & sell antiques, and the rise of vintage, retro and ‘upcycled’ reflects the changing fashions,

wealth and age groups of purchasers. Everyone now has the potential to access online auctions and traditional auction houses increasingly embrace the technology to widen their markets. Many people are now incidental traders, buying and selling directly, rather than through an intermediary, as is illustrated by the rise of the collective. This has led to recent growth in antique sales. There is increasing evidence that this has been driven by eco and cost-conscious millennials, often young professionals, who are rejecting modern fast furniture and driving this new interest in using pre-owned items. Purchasers know that it is better for the carbon footprint and often cost effective. There is an increased interest from the younger generation of buyers who want unique, personal and quality items that last over time. Antiques are now being considered the new green and sustainable way forward. This is reinforced by a huge trend on social media of decorative arts and furniture and this is reflected in the ‘Instagram aesthetic’; inspiration leading to the purchase of individual photogenic antique and vintage pieces. All with the benefit of history and the craftsmanship which really appeals to the modern purchaser. Despite this totally transformed marketplace, there is still a place for the specialist with knowledge who sources and displays items from a much wider market place and presents them for consideration with provenance, an assurance of authenticity and the information necessary to make an informed purchase. This is particularly so with the phenomenal increase in fake and counterfeit goods and is surprisingly commonplace in the antiques and art world. So, notwithstanding widespread reports to the contrary, many antique businesses and galleries are thriving and those that embrace the new technologies can do the same. There is no substitute, when purchasing antiques and fine art, to experiencing the real thing and whilst an online image & description is a useful tool it is no substitute for having the the item in front of you. Swsantiques.com will shortly be live and you can find the business on Instagram #sustainabilitywithstyle. Opening a shop and embracing Social media and the new technology and sustainable products. Maybe not so crazy then... Article written by SwS Antiques - Peter Marten, Director

Ludlow Hockey Club Welcome Your Whole Family Women training Mondays 7.30 - 9pm

History of Ludlow Hockey

Juniors training Wednesdays U13 6 - 7pm U16 7 - 8pm Men training Wednesdays 8 - 9.30pm

The Early Years 1896-1914 Ludlow Hockey appears to have played its first ever men’s match on 21st March 1896, when they lost against Leominster by 4 goals to 1. All games would have been played on poorly prepared grass and travel would have been by train with grounds close to railway stations. This does not seem to have inhibited the development of the sport and in April 1901 the Ludlow Ladies team affiliated for the first time to the All England Women’s Association. By 1898 Ludlow had played the key role in the formation of the Shropshire County teams and the first ever men’s County match was played on January 19th of that year. The county Ladies took the field for the first time on January 23rd 1902. Ludlow players were well represented in both teams. The Inter War Years 1919-1938 After the interruption of the War, hockey playing resumed in the 1919-20 season and for the next 18 years an influx of professional people into the town with hockey experience in the Forces or at University, created a successful men’s club with their home ground, as it was before the war, at the Burway cricket ground. Towards the 21st Century The club was revived in 1981, when Roger Furniss arrived in Ludlow as Vice-Principal of Ludlow College. 10 years later the club was running three men’s teams, men’s indoor team, a ladies team, a mixed team, and was leading the way in Shropshire with the club development of boy’s hockey. Playing in purple on the Burway grass the club entered evening floodlit leagues, summer leagues, and organised tournaments and visited festivals.

In the 1990s following the Olympic success of 1988, hockey changed rapidly in this country and the Ludlow club found it difficult to keep pace. The move to astro surfaces meant that the club had to play “home games” at away venues, firstly at Newtown, then Bridgnorth, then Leominster and now Much Wenlock. Recent History However the success of Ludlow Hockey Club youth players at County, Midlands and International level has been remarkable. Representing International age group teams for Wales, and England. NOW Hockey for Men, Women and Juniors from 7 years to 70 years. Play, Umpire or Coach, there is a place for you at Ludlow Hockey Club. Home matches played at Much Wenlock Sports and Leisure Centre. Training at Moor Park School led by our qualified level 1 & 2 coaches. Ludlow Hockey Club is the prime place to get your hockey in the South Shropshire area. Beginners or experienced players are all welcome.

Laptop Running Hot and Loud? Laptop computers commonly heat up a little in normal operation.  Electronic components, including large capacity batteries, become warm in use.  Your laptop should never become too hot to handle though.

it over metal fins to exchange heat from the case. The resulting hot air exhaust is expelled through vents back into the room.  This process prevents heat building up inside the machine.  The constant air cycle keeps the laptop running cool no matter the workload placed on it.

When a laptop turns hot to the touch or starts to sound like a jet engine, it’s likely beginning to overheat.   This process can be interrupted by any number of Modern laptops use nearly silent fans to cool factors during operation.  Alongside cool air, computer components and keep the system comfortable and safe fans can also suck in dust, stray hairs, even cigarette to use.  In some cases, the sound the computer makes is smoke too.  Smoke in particular contains thick tar which the best tool you have to diagnose its running condition.  coats the fins, fan blades, and internal components.   Excessive heat causes the fans to work harder and faster to compensate.  This jet engine sound is one of the first clues you have to indicate all may not be well. Why So Hot? - Because of their compact size and portability, laptop computers are particularly prone to overheating problems.  Their tiny footprint puts electronic parts closer together, creates less room for cooling vents and adds a heat generating battery which introduces more hot air into the system. Most laptops have small fans that suck in cool air, passing

Foreign debris inside the machine prevents components from working at their best.  Tar, dust, and hair slows down the internal fan and coats the heat generating components and cooling fins.  This coating prevents air exchange and keeps components warm as if they were under a blanket.

Causes of Overheating - Sometimes the way a laptop is used can cause it to overheat too.  Resting a laptop on thick carpets, blankets, or soft furnishings can block vents, preventing the fans from sucking cold air in or blowing hot air out. Leaving the machine running on carpet or furnishings, particularly for extended periods of time, can cause overheating issues and introduce extra dust into the components too.

The best place to rest a laptop while in use is on a hard surface such as a desk, table, or lap tray.  This allows air free access to the vents and helps prevent dust and hairs getting inside the machine. Overheating Results - As the computer starts running hotter for longer, its fan will attempt to compensate by running faster and more often.  This results in the “jet engine” noise many users report when their computer is struggling to keep up. Unfortunately, once dust, hair, or tar has already found its way into the machine it is notoriously difficult to clean out.  The only way to reset the machine to run cool and quiet is to disassemble the base and clean out its components. If your laptop is running hot to the touch or has started to sound loud or irregular, bring it to us for a thorough clean out. Article written by Fresh PCs Consultancy

Local charity supports local businesses

Pioneering charity NILS (No Interest Loan Scheme), which helps people in acute financial need purchase essential items, stands by its commitment to ‘keeping it local’ and is looking to develop more local supplier relationships throughout Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire. NILS buys essential items such as washing machines, cookers, fridge freezers, medical equipment and school uniforms direct from independent local suppliers on behalf of clients who then repay the loan at a rate they can afford. “Not only are we supporting local people in need, we are putting the money raised through donations and grants back into the local economy” says Chair of Trustees,Angela Vint. “At any one time we have 35 active clients on whose behalf we purchase items up to the value of £400 and now, as we have started a mobile outreach initiative taking our services to the more rural areas in the 3 counties we cover, this will grow”.

NILS has 3 offices in Ludlow, Leominster and Tenbury Wells and is completely reliant on donations from local people and organisations, receiving no council or government funding. It offers a no-interest, ethical alternative to payday loans and store cards that charge excessive rates of interest which push people into debt they struggle to repay. If you would like to learn more about NILS, apply for a no-interest loan or support the charity in any way please go to www.nils.org.uk, email enquiries@nils. org.uk or call 01584 811512.

Discover companionship, security and a new lifestyle with Churchill When you move to a Churchill Retirement Living development such as Betjeman Lodge in Ludlow, you get more than just an apartment, it’s a whole new way of life. You’ll have a comfortable, secure place to live, with the option to socialise with other Owners as much or as little as you like. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits is that you won’t have to worry about security or maintaining the house and garden. At this time of year, as the weather turns colder and the nights grow darker, keeping the house and garden maintained is probably the last thing you want to think about. If you own a large house then it can be a year-round job, and the winter months are often the most difficult. It can be a real burden when you’d rather just relax and enjoy your retirement. However, it doesn’t have to be that way! With a brand new Churchill apartment, all the stress of keeping things in good order is looked after by a Lodge Manager, who is there to oversee the dayto-day running of the building so you don’t have to. Churchill’s award winning customer service team is also on hand to respond quickly to anything that needs fixing or adjusting, and to keep everything warm and comfortable for you. Instead of worrying about the cold or the frost, you can sit back and relax with the peace of mind that any external work, gardening and other jobs are taken care of. Churchill Owner Patricia Watt has been doing just that since moving to her new apartment at New Pooles Lodge in Fishponds. Patricia says: “When my husband sadly passed away I didn’t feel that I needed to maintain a large home on my own anymore, so I decided to downsize. I sold my house very quickly and exchanged on my new apartment the same day. The process was so simple and the Churchill team were fantastic throughout the move. It all went so smoothly, which was a huge relief for me.

meeting more new Owners. From the day I moved into my apartment it’s felt like being on holiday.” At Churchill we also know how important it is for our Owners to feel safe and secure, especially during the dark winter months. A camera entry system is installed in every Churchill apartment as standard, allowing you to view any visitors before letting them into the main entrance door. Every apartment also comes with a 24 hour emergency Careline system, provided through a discreet personal pendant alarm and bathroom call point. Having a Lodge Manager to look out for you and keep an eye on things also adds to the peace of mind you get with Churchill. If the idea of companionship, security and a low maintenance lifestyle appeals to you, find out more by calling Louise at Churchill Retirement Living on 01584 777 323 or visiting churchillretirement.co.uk

Ludlow Castle was first built nearly 1,000 years ago. Sir Walter de Lacy was a Norman nobleman from Lassy in France who came to England during the conquest of 1066.William the Conqueror placed Walter in the central and southern Welsh Marches, probably as second-incommand in the area. It is Sir Walter and his son, Roger, who are generally credited with the earliest developments of a castle at Ludlow in the late 11th century. Granted the manor of Stanton Lacy, they soon realised that the natural ridge of high ground to the west, defended on three sides by the river Teme, was an ideal location to build a castle to dominate and Place the numbers so that each row, subdue the local area. The Story of the Green – A dream becomes reality Many people know and love the beautiful riverside area known today as Dinham Millennium Green. For nearly 20 years, Paul Nicholls was Chairman of Dinham Millennium Green Trust, and throughout that time he was aided by his Deputy, David Edwards. Sadly, Paul died in February 2018, and David passed away November 2018. Their contribution was immense, and a book has been published which records why, how and despite overwhelming odds, the Millennium Green was created and the Mill on the Green restored. Compiled and researched by Rosemary Wood, The Story of the Green – A dream becomes reality, costs £10, and all monies from its sale will be donated directly to Dinham Millennium Green Trust. But before the story of the Millennium Green can be told, we must go back to the late 1950s, when a child drowned in the sluice gates of the old mill building on the banks of the river Teme at Dinham, and a cherry tree was planted. 40 years later, battle lines were drawn up when the then South Shropshire District Council offered the site of the old swimming pool and changing rooms for sale. Ludlovians challenged the right of planners and developers to build six houses on the banks of the river; a public meeting was called, and money raised to buy and clear the site. Every tale has a hero, and the vision, determination and leadership of one man, Paul Nicholls, was essential. The old swimming pool was demolished, and the medieval corn mill which had housed the pool changing rooms was transformed. If you have a relative or friend who loves Ludlow, or you would like to support Dinham Millennium Green Trust, this book is the perfect gift. Copies are available from Castle Bookshop, 5 Castle Street, Ludlow, SY8 1AS (cash or cheque only) or from Rosemary Wood, atThe Merchant House, Lower Corve Street, Ludlow, SY8 1DU. Email rosemary.wood3@ gmail.com or phone 01584 875438 to collect a copy. Cheques should be made payable to Dinham Millennium Green Trust: if you are not in Ludlow, send an additional £3 for postage and packing, with your name and address.
