“I was very pleased with the response to my advert in the January 2019 issue. I’ve had quite a few enquiries, the majority of whom have already gone on to attend a class. An advert in the Local Ludlow is a great way of reaching people who don’t rely on social media for local information.”
More classes end events have been added to our informative What’s On listings, starting on page 18.

Digital Allies... Digital Allies was set up by Steven Parker back in 2014, and I joined as Commercial Director in November 2016. At that time we had around six staff – today we employ twelve people and are continuing to hire more heads to support our growth. Steven’s background was in traditional print media: cutting his teeth with Trinity Mirror Group, he then spent over ten years with one of the largest SEO agencies in the country, with clients such as House of Fraser, GSK and Scottish Power. My marketing career started a little later following a ten-year spell in the army and an MBA at Durham University, after which I joined Procter and Gamble to work in brand management. I later moved into Professional Services marketing and subsequently undertook a number of strategic consultancy projects before joining forces with Steven. Our head office is in County Durham but I am based in Ludlow and, while I work a few days a month in our head office, I tend to spend my time looking after clients in different parts of the country. We describe ourselves as a full-service digital marketing company. Our purpose is to support our clients in all elements of their digital marketing. We have an experienced in-house website development team that built over twenty client websites last year. It is our belief that a fresh website is only half the battle for many businesses; what is often more important is getting eyes on that website and effectively conveying the benefits of your product or service. In response to this we have built a digital marketing team that is able to support our clients when they need help in this area. Digital marketing projects typically range from helping a client to set up a Paid Facebook Ads campaign or building complex multi-channel paid search campaigns, to setting up analytics, SEO work, content provision and strategy development. We have made it a principle of ours to operate in a transparent way, so if we can teach you to do something for yourself, we will, and if you ask us for something that you don’t need we will tell you that you don’t need it – we believe in working in partnership with our clients. Digital Allies believe in using data to inform strategy
development and decision making – and with Google’s free-to-use analytics platform, accessing this data doesn’t have to be time consuming or costly. We encourage all of our clients to use Google Analytics and as long as the account is set up correctly it can provide the website owner with vital information to help make the right decisions for their business. If you are using other digital platforms it is possible to combine data sources through Datastudio to get a more rounded view of what is happening with your online strategy. In addition to focusing on a number of key digital marketing disciplines we have also chosen to specialise in a number of business sectors where having a fresh supply of customers is vital to ongoing success. Our specialist areas are as follows: retail, hospitality and leisure, education, professional services and membership organisations. Recently we built a new e-commerce website for an online retailer of laminate flooring, which resulted in onsite conversions increasing by 60%, which led to a 69% uplift in revenue. Another client in the professional services sector saw an increase in site traffic of 35% following an SEO review and the implementation of an SEO strategy. We also work for a number of HE and FE organisations and manage their paid social and paid search campaigns that successfully support their student recruitment activities. Recently we have added graphic and brand design and development services to our offering, and we rebranded the Oasis Aquila Housing charity just before Christmas. We see exciting times ahead and are continuously on the lookout for talented people to join our team, with live vacancies in our web development team and our digital marketing team. Ludlow Male Voice Choir - inviting new members to join the fun!
Ludlow Male Voice Choir is looking forward to another great year and inviting new members to join the fun.
The choir was particularly honoured that among the audience was John’s widow, Sue. Under the guidance of musical director, Amy Evans, LMVC continues to go from strength to strength with membership more than doubling since she took over. The members now number nearly 30 with new recruits welcome and while enthusiasm is required, ability to read music is not!
The choir performed a number of major concerts in 2018, ranging from a superb collaboration with the world-famous Onllwyn Male Choir in South Wales, to a civic ceremony commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War on Gallows Bank, and a series of fundraising events for local charities, including a summer concert at St Peter’s Church, Stanton Lacy in aid of Midlands Air Ambulance.
Accompanied by pianist Jane Hughes, the choir’s repertoire features a wide variety of songs and styles, ranging from The Beatles, to Elvis Presley to songs from popular musicals such as Les Miserables, opera favourites, hits like Giuseppe Verdi’s ‘Speed Your Journey’ and the beautiful Welsh hymn Gwahoddiad, now established as one of LMVC’s signature tunes, and Canon Lan.
In June, LMVC travelled to Onllwyn, near Neath, for a joint concert with the choir from the mining village whose links with the Lesbian and Gay community during the miners’ strike of the mid-1980s were the subject of the hit movie Pride, starring Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton. That was followed by a memorable evening in Stanton Lacy during which their programme included, for the first time anywhere, a rendition of ‘Southernmost of Dales’, a song written by local musician John Hayward, specially arranged in four-part harmony for the choir by his friend Steve Dunachie.
The choir, which rehearses one evening per week at Ludlow Women’s Centre, is available to assist with fundraising activities, parties, weddings and funerals. For further information, please contact David Trotter on 01584 872492, visit: www.ludlowmalevoicechoir.weebly.com or find them on Facebook.

Scholarships... At Moor Park, Scholarships are to be awarded to children entering Year 3 and above in September 2019 with talent in academic areas, sport, music, art, DT and drama, and attract fee remission of up to 30% on the basic day fee. Headmaster Charlie Minogue said, “Moor Park is a school which prides itself on finding something that every child is good at and nurturing the talents of individual children is something that excites the staff here”. The list of scholarships won by Moor Park children is impressive: in 2017 and 2018 an impressive 53 scholarships have been won by 59 children applying, alongside a record breaking set of exam results from the Year 8 leavers. These scholarships were awarded for academic achievement, sport, music, art, DT, all-rounder and drama; good evidence for the school being successful in meeting its aim of finding areas of strength in every child. Moor Park’s experienced and passionate specialist sports coaches and daily games programme together with superb facilities ensure that talented young boys and girls are pushed on in all sporting areas. The school also opened a new Performing Arts Centre in September with
inspiring spaces for music and drama, including a recording studio. The inspiring art department and extraordinary DT facilities, together with their inspirational teachers, have been getting the best out of children for many years. A taste of what the school offers is available through Saturday Smash, a series of amazing activities for children in Years 3 to 5 on a Saturday morning. Musical theatre, bush craft, kayaking, cookery, orchestra and teambuilding are just some of the activities on offer and all for only £10 per morning. Do visit http://www. moorpark.org.uk/saturdaysmash/ for further details. You will also find an online booking form. Moor Park have re-shaped their curriculum, shape of the day and teaching methods ready for September 2018 to encourage six habits of mind (Moor Park Mindsets) that are considered to give children an advantage as they take their place in an A.I. dominated and rapidly changing world. Mindsets such as critical thought, curiosity, confidence (to take a responsible risk), creativity, resilience and independence are all now being deliberately encouraged through what the school teaches and how they teach it. This approach is being used at all levels of the school and the innovative and forward-thinking initiative means that children of all abilities should benefit.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Ashford Cars Business name: I thought long and hard about this – I wanted to keep it local, hence ‘Ashford’ after Ashford Carbonal. I’m hoping it’s simple but effective! When was the business started? It’s only been going for a couple of months now, but it seems a lot longer. The business is doing well, but will always have room to grow and hopefully expand. What made you set up the business? I’ve always wanted to set up a business of some kind, I just didn’t know what! So having gained experience working for someone else within this industry I decided it was time to take that leap of faith and start working for myself. Where are you based? At this moment in time I’m based at my home at the top of Gravel Hill. Do you have ambitions to move and grow? Everyone has ambitions, don’t they?! Mine are to be the best that I can be and provide a reliable, friendly service. I’m hoping to have 10 cars on the road within the next 5 years (fingers crossed).
What has been the biggest help to start building your business up? I have to say that without the support of other local taxi/private hire firms and hotel and restaurant owners, my startup would’ve been a lot harder than it was. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: I’d change the diesel prices! Name one regret you have about your business: My only regret is not doing it sooner. Sum up your business in five words: Ashford Cars: reliable, trustworthy, professional.
What’s your ideal job/client? Every job I do is ideal: I love driving and meeting people, which I guess helps! My ideal client is someone who pays on time, once I’ve invoiced them... Do you need to keep your qualifications up to date? Once you’ve done the relevant training and qualified, it’s just a case of maintaining the vehicle – MOT twice a year and a service every few months. Then renewing your car licences yearly and personal licences every 3 to 5 years, along with insurances – it’s not a cheap business. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? I’ve found out that I can multi-task!

New Month’s Resolution Surely you mean New Year’s Resolution (NYR) I hear you cry. Well no, although I have been asked to write an article about keeping your health and fitness resolutions we all know that changing a habit is hard enough without thinking about doing it for a whole year.
atmosphere at my fitness sessions is fun so people keep coming. But circuits and PT might not be your thing. Do something that brings you joy, it could be dancing, swimming or walking, then see where your journey takes you.
When we set goals we use the acronym S.M.A.R.T: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time bound. When clients tell me they simply want to lose weight I go through a goal setting process with them so that their goal might be “I want to drop two dress sizes by June so that I am confident enough to take my children swimming”.
3. Focus on positives and not the negatives. If you eat well for five days and then eat badly one night, focus on the five successful days and get straight back on your eating plan.
Once you have a realistic resolution how do you stick with it? Hopefully, these handy points will help: 1. Be answerable to someone / something. If you start with a friend, join a fitness group or engage the services of a Personal Trainer you are immediately much more likely to stick with it. 2. Find something that you think you’ll enjoy. The
4. Keep chipping away: all diets will achieve the results that they promise but only if you keep to them. Be careful which calorie-restricting plan you follow as some are not particularly healthy. So, focus on your goals, do something you enjoy, diet healthily, re-engage with your New Month’s Resolution each month until you reach your goal. Hopefully, by then your resolution will be your normal daily routine and a life-long habit. Property tips from Ludlow legal expert The start of a new year is always a popular time for people to put their property on the market and start the search for a new home. Loretta Aston, a Ludlow-based residential property solicitor at Lanyon Bowdler, has been advising people on selling their home for more than 12 years, and has shared some tips on how to sell quickly and for the right price. “Despite the national property market slowing down during 2018, the market here in south Shropshire has continued to be busy,” Loretta says. “Ludlow and its surrounding area is always a desirable place to live, which means property is often in demand. That being said, if you are looking to sell, there are a number of things you can do to give yourself the best chance of achieving the kind of sale you want. “Firstly, be prepared. It is absolutely imperative that you have spent the time and effort making sure your property looks its best when it is launched on the market. “The first six weeks is all-important. I cannot overemphasise the importance of the first few weeks of marketing your property. A seller’s best opportunity to attract a good buyer and agree a sale at the right price is within those first weeks when the property is fresh on the market. “You should be guided by your chosen estate agent as to the right time to hit the market with your type of property. The timing of putting the property on the market needs to be coupled with the right pricing strategy, and I encourage my clients to be realistic and not go for an asking price that is over-inflated with the plan of reducing the price later on. “That brings me to my second point - having a realistic asking price. Valuing a property is not an exact science but a good agent will have experience and feel for the market in your area. “We all like to feel that we have made a ‘deal’ and
a seller should factor in some room to negotiate, but hitting the market too high with a view to a big reduction later can be damaging. Potential buyers look at unsold properties and think ‘why has that not sold’ and ‘what is wrong with that house’ and whatever the reason may be, it all comes back to price in the end. “Now we come to the crux of a house sale - the offer. I always to say to clients that the best offer is not automatically the highest price, because it depends on who is making the offer. “The best buyers are cash buyers with no property to sell, and the next best option is a buyer with nothing to sell and a mortgage agreed in principle. Buyers in these situations are harder to find, and for most sellers their buyers will be dependent on the sale of their own property and are likely to be in a chain. “Your estate agents will be able to obtain information about the position on all parties in the chain to enable you to make an informed decision when comparing offers. But in a nutshell - the longer the chain, the more potential for the sale being delayed and falling through. “I have seen plenty of sales agreed at higher than expected sale prices, where the buyer is not in a position to proceed immediately, but the seller is excited by the high offer and will therefore not consider any lower offers. “In the worst-case scenario, the seller waits for the highest bidder to be able to move, only to find that they inflated the offer to reserve the property, then at the last minute either reduce their offer or the seller decides they cannot wait any longer and has to remarket from scratch. “Moving house can be a minefield, but the right estate agent and legal advice will help you to avoid too many headaches.” For more advice, contact Loretta Aston at Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors in Ludlow by calling 01584 871718 or email loretta.aston@lblaw.co.uk

The Great Siege of Ludlow, 1646. The Civil War between King Charles I and Parliament, which engulfed most of the British Isles between 1642 and 1646, saw widespread destruction and a loss of life similar in scale to that of World War I. By the spring of 1646, Ludlow, which was held by the king, had still escaped some of the worst horrors of war. But prospects were now bleak. King Charles faced total defeat, and the Parliamentarians were picking off his remaining garrisons. Some, like Bridgnorth, reacted with a desperate resistance which left towns in ruins. Others surrendered without a fight. Which fate would befall Ludlow? The King’s Governor there, Sir Michael Woodhouse, was a professional soldier with a reputation for ruthlessness. Fortunately, however, for Ludlow he was also a pragmatic character who had no desire to die for a lost cause. It was equally fortunate, when Parliamentarian troops appeared before the town on 24 April, that their commander, Colonel John Birch, the Governor of Hereford was equally realistic. Both recognised that Woodhouse needed to ‘go through the motions’ of resistance in order to enhance his prospects of military employment in Europe. Birch and his men had no wish to die unnecessarily in a war which was already won. So an unspoken understanding seems to have been reached. After some initial skirmishing in which parts of the Ludlow suburbs were burnt, Woodhouse and his men withdrew behind the medieval walls, and both sides conducted a low-key and fairly bloodless siege until 31 May, when honour duly satisfied, Woodhouse surrendered. He vanishes from the pages of history, whilst Birch became a respected Herefordshire gentleman. Both had reason to be satisfied, and the people of Ludlow had cause for relief! www.mortimerhistorysociety.org.uk www.ludlowhistory.co.uk There is a full description of the siege of Ludlow in the book shown in the image.
