I must say it was a tad emotional saying goodbye to many regular sellers and buyers. Over the many years Robert, Clare and I had met some superb people, we’d also had some right odd bods too who seemed to complain about the silliest of things – but that’s another story! It was sad for the Car Boot Sales to come to an end under our organisation…but good news for you guys, they have been taken over by local couple John and Cynthia Boosey – read more on page 6. I wish them the best of luck and hope they take these Car Boot Sales to a new level with their fresh enthusiasm. The Summer months seem to be our busiest. In July we distributed our Summer Family Magazine, Cariads. I hope you’ve found it useful and continue to do so over the Summer Holidays. We’re also working extremely hard on the Brecon Jazz / Fringe Guide 2016, there was some uncertainty earlier this year as to would this event be going ahead. Well we can assure you it is, with bells on! Venture to neighbouring town Brecon for the 12th–14th August for delicious food, family entertainment, swinging Jazz music and foot fancy Fringe music! Enjoy,

News from Glasbury Ward

Southwest Forestry & Arboricultural Services

by County Councillor James Gibson-Watt At the time of writing, the people of France and, in particular, Nice on the Cote d’Azur, are trying to recover from the horrors of the evening of Bastille Day. Well over eighty, including many children, were killed and hundreds injured, by an extremist in a lorry. For me, the horror of it is made worse by the fact that Nice is a highly-civilised mix of cultures and traditions in a setting of almost unparalleled beauty. I think of my brother on such tragic occasions. In his

Events like that tend to put our everyday troubles in to perspective, but those problems are no less real for all that. For example, the recent confusion over plastic recycling has caused much anxiety, with many boxes of plastic rejected by the collection teams for containing the ‘wrong sort of plastic’. Clearly, the Council’s efforts last autumn to inform residents about the change of policy did not work. While recycling ‘stretchy’ plastic and film is difficult, if we do not do it, much of it will be fly-tipped or burnt, and the rest sent to landfill. All of these options are bad and the latter costs the Council money, which could otherwise be spent on other services. I and my colleagues have called for a sustained effort by the Council to re-inform every household of what plastic can currently be recycled and for it to urgently explore ways of recycling the stuff that it currently rejects. News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth I turn my thoughts to this month’s column on the eve of another Royal Welsh Show, Europe’s premiere celebration of farming and rural life. We are so fortunate to have an event of this prestige on our doorstep, especially as it provides such a boost to our visitor economy. It will be useful to catch up with many locals at Llanelwedd, as well as having an opportunity to engage with the farming unions and other countryside organisations, as they plan their response to the changed circumstances following the 23rd June. In particular, I am looking forward to meeting our new Dyfed-Powys Police & Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llewelyn. Amongst other things, I plan to raise issues around rural policing and the recent rise in hate crime incidents, including some in Powys, which have rightly caused alarm.

from the wider concerns for the local Talgarth economy, I am acutely aware of the implications for adjacent residents of any change in the car park regime – and will do my utmost to ensure effective communications on this important matter.

The late Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Tip O’Neill, coined the phrase ‘all politics is local’ and this summer is certainly bearing out the wisdom of the adage. Whilst Powys County Council is evaluating its response to the mammoth consultation on Gwernyfed High School, ahead of a special meeting of the County Council in early September, we have a number of other issues that are causing concern in our community. The lack of an effective communications strategy around recent changes in the PCC approach to recycling arrangements, especially involving plastic film, left many residents fuming. It is fair neither to householders, nor to frontline workers to manage change so badly. With these issues in mind, I am campaigning with my Welsh Liberal Democrat colleagues Cllrs James Gibson Watt and Gareth Ratcliffe for better and more timely communications with residents, on environmental and other council services. At the same time, I am working with Talgarth Town Council colleagues to get clarity on the outcome of the recent PCC car parking consultation. Apart

Meanwhile, if that were not enough uncertainty for one community to deal with, the Post Office, in partnership with the Coop, is proposing radical changes to how they do business in Talgarth. I am on the record as opposing these changes, because they threaten the quality of service available to residents in this area, by fragmenting the excellent Talgarth Post Office team, and putting the regular Coop staff under significant and unwanted extra pressure. The elderly, the vulnerable – and for different reasons, the local business community – stand to lose the most. Talgarth and District Regeneration Group and the Town Council have both been proactive – and I worked with Kirsty Williams AM to organise a meeting on Friday, 15th July, so that we could present the Post Office representative with our catalogue of concerns. We must all continue to make the case for maintaining the integrity of this vital service. I look forward to seeing many of you at local community events, such as Talgarth Sports and Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains on the August Bank Holiday weekend. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, via Facebook or Twitter @WilliamPowell2016. Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Friday 5th August from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre. In any event, I hope to see you soon. Best wishes William

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

Well, well, well – what a few weeks we have had in politics! We have voted to leave the EU, the Prime Minister has resigned and, closer to home, I’ve been pushing the Government on bank closures and tourism VAT issues in the House of Commons. And some people say politics is dull! The referendum was a highly charged debate, with points, stats and arguments flying around on all sides; dividing communities, families and friends alike. Indeed, a number of people are calling for a second referendum. While I do understand this call, I am afraid that I do not agree. I do not see the referendum as a game where, if you lose, you can simply have a ‘do-over’. The referendum was not about winning and losing, rather about whether there was a majority in favour of staying in or leaving the EU, and the outcome should be respected. Though I am pleased with the result (as a brexiteer myself), now is time for unity. It is time for us to put aside our differences and accept the will of the people. We should work together now to create a strong relationship with Europe that above all is in the British interest. Closer to home, I have been speaking in the House of Commons on two issues that are deeply affecting our area. First, I made a speech to push to Government to act over local bank branch closures. It is not acceptable that banks are willing to remove essential financial provision from local people and local businesses. I will continue to fight closures and look at alternative options to keep the banking provisions our area needs. Second, I have raised the issue of high VAT rates on our tourism industry with the Government. The UK has one of the highest VAT rates on tourism anywhere in Europe and I believe it is holding back our industry. I am pleased that the Government will now seriously consider what more can be done to help the tourism industry across the UK, including looking at changing VAT rates. That’s it for this month. If ever I can help with any matter, please contact me on chris.davies.mp@parliament.uk or call 01982 559180.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer I write this still bemused at the speed with which the first half of the year has gone by. Next week is the Royal Welsh Show, then it’s the summer holidays and back into autumn. Nature doesn’t always run to a calendar as we do and so there can be shortages and gluts of different things. I am getting worrying news about plums which are in many areas still tiny and may possibly be shed by the trees as a form of defence – to prevent wasting all the energy in filling and ripening the fruit. I have heard that some of the supermarket cherries have been tasteless this year , and I’ve seen some very small ones in the wholesale market. Yes, they need water which we’ve had in bucketfuls but they also need warmth during growing as well as ripening – not much summer warmth yet this year. If this is happening to the cherries what about the apples and pears later on? Choice is getting limited now as the only fruit about is either northern hemisphere stored all winter and up till now or southern hemisphere which is down to Gala and Braeburn with a few Pink Lady or similar. New Zealand Cox apples were very nice but are only a short season and those left will swell slightly and crack open when put out on display. Vegetables are almost as difficult, recently broccoli virtually trebled in price – and it wasn’t very good either, cauliflowers went up and have so far stayed there, the runner beans that we all love are available but at enormous price – they will come down as the season progresses. Potatoes are very short for the chippers who are in many cases using new potatoes and putting up with something not quite up to scratch. At the same time there are virtually no onions apart from those from Tasmania – yes, the Tasmania underneath Australia on the map! These are shipped literally half way around the world and the price is as expected – I have found them excellent onions but at a minimum of three times as much money. Already I have been asked for pickling vinegar which we’ve got, so be ready for the chutney making and the Sloe Gin to have them ready for Christmas. Happy holidays everyone! Looking for a weekend with a difference in the area in August? You may be interested in a new event being held at the idyllic setting of The Bridge Inn in Michaelchurch Escley (and adjoining fields) built around the inspiration of the campfire, storytelling, networking and sharing knowledge. Campfire Convention 001.UK is the first weekend gathering to celebrate the launch of a new social network for creatives and will feature camping, nature, debates, workshops, live music and DJ sets. Thinking and talking around democracy, politics, digital change, life and death, shaping narrative, protest, and the big changes – personal to global – that are happening all around us every day. The event starts with a welcome campfire on Friday evening and Saturday and Sunday daytime events include debates, workshops and speakers. Live music from Edward II, Anna & Elizabeth, Adrian Legg, Will Pound and Eddy Jay and DJ Greg Wilson in the evenings. Celebrated musician, artist and activist Brian

Eno is Saturday morning keynote speaker who sets out his Campfire agenda “With the ongoing collapse of any form of coherent government in this country we need to start looking at other ways of creating a society that works for all of us – not just the wealthiest.” Other panel subjects include digital democracy, universal basic income, the refugee opportunity, storytelling and narrative, life and death, listening, protest and counterculture and the search for The Green Man. The Campfire concept is the brainchild of Pete Lawrence, who founded The Big Chill festival, and who believes that there is a need for a vital new space, led by its members, which can grow into a vibrant community where people come together to share common interests, passions, ethics and motivations whether related to work or play. Come along on 12–14 August and make some new friends. Tickets strictly limited to 500 and selling fast. More info at www.campfireconvention.com.

Strut that butt! Many times I’ve implored: ‘move, because you can’! NOT to lose weight or look good for the beach – but because we were DESIGNED to! And we’re fading fast: Back in our hunter gatherer days, as soon as we could toddle, we’d all be averaging many miles a day; some days – after a rewarding kill – not at all, but on other days when bellies rumbled or the site had become sustenance-sterile – completely up sticks and walk for many days to relocate. And in many planes of movement, to catch what we needed, care for our offspring, and gather from high as well as the ground. We simply don’t move like this anymore. This has huge ramifications. Let’s take just ONE muscle: I’ll explain. Our butt muscles (Glutes) – due to all the sitting down we do now – have amnesia! Next time you’re in a busy high street, have a look at all the completely flat male bottoms. (Woman tend to have a bit of natural fat there so it’s not so prevalent). But here’s the thing: they’re not just there padding out the back of your jeans, they DO things (namely move the hip and thigh). If you lose these functions due to inactivity the butt muscles can completely lose their tone. It can then

be actually quite hard to regain strength and other muscles will often take over (likely the hamstrings). Treadmill runners BEWARE (if that’s all you do) – the belt is moving the hip into extension FOR YOU so you may well end up butt-weak! The list of problems from weak glutes is pretty comprehensive: lower back issues, especially if the hip flexors (front of hip) are tight.Think of your muscles as being like guide ropes to a tent: If you pull on a rope the tent tips to that side. Similarly if muscles are tight they will ‘pull’, on a bone (e.g, hip flexors on the pelvis), and tuck your lower spine in giving the classic duck walk. (of course the spine is then compressed which can give pain too). The body moves kinetically - a chain of movement as opposed to any given part in isolation. So travels further down to your knees, and even feet may be affected (pain in the knees and an inverted foot pattern). All this from ONE set of underused muscles! So: find something you enjoy, or better yet a few things, and go for it! Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Local Talent: Emma Baker-Jones Artist Name? Emma BakerJones of ESB Leather.

always makes me proud wearing the bridle and accessories I made for him!

Type of Artist? Leatherworker & Saddler.

What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? A really smart made to measure bridle, and also my traditional cattle show halters and decorated dog collars are always very satisfying to make and look stunning.

Range of Products? Handmade bridles, livestock show halters, huge range of dog collars, leads and unisex belts & much more! Where can your products be purchased? Most can be bought online through my website www.esbleather.co.uk, or by telephoning me to discuss your requirements. I can also create bespoke commissions and offer a made to measure service. I exhibit at a number of shows in the Three Counties area throughout the year, full list of my events can be found on my website. Clients are also welcome to come along to my workshop by appointment. Price range? From keyrings at £5.50 upwards, e.g. bridle prices start at around £105, belts from £29 and dog collars from £19 and commissions can be quoted for individually. How long have you been an artist? Since 1989. Where did you train or gain experience? I initially trained with a master Saddler then moved to the Leather Centre at Walsall Tech College (now a museum!) to complete my training. It was then a case of getting lots of practice and experience to improve. It’s one of those skills in which you never stop learning or improving. It’s always been a help having our own horses and dogs who regularly get used as models! What has been your proudest moment? There have been several… In 2010, I was commissioned to make a range of hound collars for Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood film, and in 2008, I worked with silver buckle-maker Ed Wiltshear to produce a set of commemorative belts for the Team GB eventers, Mary King, William Fox-Pitt, Tina Cook, Daisy Dick & Sharon Hunt. Recently, Ronaldo the Hereford Bull and the Hereford FC mascot received much media coverage sporting one of my cattle halters. We also have a successful homebred 4* Event horse who

Have you any future plans for your work? I’d like to increase my range of products – I have lots of designs planned but time is always against me! I’m planning to move to a much larger workshop which will be a huge improvement on my current tiny one. I’d also like to be able to run some short courses once I have the extra space. What advice would you give a local artist? Be heard, be seen and get involved with other local groups which are great sources of shared information and advice. What other local artists do you admire? Miranda Michels makes the most amazing and beautiful metal sculptures of birds and animals. She is self-taught and we have several of her works of art in the family. There are so many talented artists and craftsmen and women in our area who I admire so it’s difficult to choose just one. Many, including myself, are featured in the recent Logaston Press publication by Malcolm Scott, Images of Creative Herefordshire. Artist statement: In the 1980s, I was at a loose end and I took a short saddlery training course with a Master saddler and was hooked! I continued my professional training at the college in Walsall, gaining my City & Guilds qualifications in saddlery and bridle-making, then gradually diversified my range of products due to demand in the following years. I’ve been involved with showing and training dogs and horses for most of my life, so I combined the two sets of skills to produce a wide range of very practical but smart, hard-wearing leathergoods for dogs, horses, cattle,

sheep, people and even cars, as well as bespoke commissions. I work from a home-based workshop set in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside and select only the best British bridle leathers (mainly Sedgwick’s), together with the best quality metal fittings, mostly from the last brass foundry left in the UK! I don’t own an industrial sewing machine and really you can’t beat leather goods that are produced in the traditional way using saddler’s hand tools and techniques including hand-stitching. A wellmade, correctly fitting bridle, cattle or sheep halter can make all the difference in the show ring! It is certainly more time consuming but really satisfying to produce an item from scratch and be confident that it will outlast any mass produced pieces. A Right Royal Day at Talgarth Mill and The Bakers’ Table

It all began in April, with a visit from Dame Shân LeggeBourke. She called into the Mill to ask if we might be able to host a visit from HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall during their annual summer break. Dame Shân said that the Royals would be particularly interested in the Mill for its community credentials, and let it drop that Their Royal Highnesses enjoy our bread when they are staying in the area. What followed was a recce, supposed to be discreet, but try hiding 9 of the Royals’ officials and having a discreet conversation in the café, especially when one of them was over 6’ tall, and they were all dressed in a distinctly ‘London look’! It was agreed that we would be put forward, that we would have to wait a couple of weeks to find out, and that we couldn’t tell anyone who the VIPs we were inviting them to meet were.We got the go ahead and had to quickly compile a list of invitees. Volunteers, staff, Talgarth school and suppliers were all included. When it came to café customers, we had to put the names of our regulars in a hat and draw lots, as space was limited. Two weeks before, we were allowed to say who was coming, but not at what time, and excitement began to mount as people planned what to wear! On the day, guests had to arrive by 9.30am. As the time of the Royals’ arrival drew nearer, Dame Shân’s invited guests arrived, and we lined up at the gate to greet Their Royal Highnesses. Having introduced them to Bruce and Rosie Williams, Liz and I took Prince Charles and the Duchess around the Mill and gardens, where they met volunteers, local school children and

grain suppliers. In the café they met the rest of the guests before trying their hands at kneading bread. After unveiling a plaque to commemorate the visit, they met some of the Craft Shop’s artists, then went for a walkabout on The Square. Now a few words from Clare who was kindly invited to represent the Wye Local team: I was thrilled to bits to be invited to meet Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall at Talgarth Mill on 7th July, and yes, I’m one of those who was guilty of trying to plan what to wear! After trying on nearly everything in the wardrobe, and taking photos with my camera phone of nearly every outfit, I eventually plumped for the smart dress, my second best one. Navy with orange accessories. The big day arrived and all of the guests were given a place to stand in The Bakers’ Table for the honour of meeting Prince Charles or the Duchess. Nicola showed the Duchess around one half of the café and Liz showed Prince Charles around ‘my’ half. It was such an honour. I was really nervous as my chance to speak approached. I remembered, just in time, to say “Good morning Your Royal Highness” and we chatted about the Wye Local magazine and a little bit about a race in which he rode, at Ludlow, quite a few years ago now, just beaten by an old friend of ours, racing commentator Derek Thompson. In my opinion they should have sent Derek to the Tower! It was a wonderful morning and one that I will never forget. I would like to thank everyone at Talgarth Mill for inviting me on behalf of Wye Local. Article supplied by Nicola Willis. Photos by Paul Cascarini.

Ewwww, it’s Dog Poo!

Dog Poo is the focus of a campaign in Hay-on-Wye at the moment. The pretty town and tourist hot-spot has at times earned unfortunate (and unofficial!) title of ‘Dog Poo Capital of Wales’. However months of hard work by the local community has seen things improve. New bins, installed by the Hay Community Woodland Group’ along the old railway line footpath are making a big difference. These bins were funded by a grant from Hay Town Council. Local dog walkers now have multiple bins to use along the path, and each week over 30kg of dog poo is collected by volunteers. The volunteers have also used biodegradable marker spray to highlight any (dog) turds left along the footpath. Not only does this make it easier for pedestrians to avoid stepping in something stinky, it also acts as a ‘nudge’ to dog owners to clear up after their dogs. But why is it so important to make sure you collect dog waste? We spoke to Hannah Sampson MRCVS from Hay Veterinary Group to find out more about the health risks posed by dog poo. She told us ‘’Dog poo isn’t just smelly, it can also be a danger to other animals and people. Dog poo contains a lot of different bacteria, viruses and parasites. Some of these bugs are zoonotic – which means they can make humans unwell. An example is ‘Toxocara canis’, a roundworm common in dogs if they are not regularly wormed.’ Hannah told us about the risk to grazing farm animals from dog mess left on pasture: ‘Many dog owners

think that leaving their dog’s poo on grazing land isn’t a big problem. However some worm species have a complicated lifecycle that involves both dogs and livestock. In our mixed veterinary practice we see cases of ‘Gid’ in sheep every year. This is associated with one species of canine tapeworm. Affected sheep become extremely unwell and will die without surgical treatment. Other tapeworm species can reduce the growth rates of lambs. Most farmers are aware of the disease associated with dog tapeworm, and will treat their own dogs every 3 months. However pet owners may be using a wormer that doesn’t control tapeworm species. In this part of the world, it is essential that dog owners talk to their vet about how best to worm their dogs, especially if they walk over farmland. Hay Town Council are asking local schools to design posters to encourage dog owners to clear up after their dogs. These will be displayed around the town, and stickers will go on every bin. Unlike many towns, in Hay-on-Wye dog poo can be placed in ANY council bin, rather than just those designed for the ‘job’. Dog poo bags can be bought from many shops around town. Owners of big dogs might be interested in purchasing vets ‘arm-length gloves’, which make picking up a big dog’s poo a lot easier. Dog owners are encouraged to take spare bags with them on walks, and offer them to anyone who has left their bags at home. Bag it and bin it – don’t leave it to ruin someone else’s day.

Get to really know... Sarah Groves Sarah and her husband Matt moved to Hay-on-Wye when Sarah became the Headteacher at Clyro Church in Wales Primary School, 2 years ago now. Sarah loves her job and has been a teacher all her working life, having been a Headteacher for 9 years now. In what little spare time Sarah gets after teaching, she enjoys walking her dog Maisie, socialising and catching up with friends and family, reading, going to church and walking around the local area, particularly the Black Mountains. Do you have any pets? A faithful and fabulous Parson Jack Russell Terrier called Maisie who has a larger than life personality and has been with me through thick and thin. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Definitely The Clangers! I also enjoyed The Flumps and Mr Ben. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To be invisible and spy on the leaders of the world to see what they are up to. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Wow! Aren’t we lucky to live in a gorgeous part of the world such as Hay-on-Wye! Then I’ll go and make a cup of tea to get me started. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? My lovely husband Matt. Two lessons life has taught you? Live for today as you don’t know what tomorrow will bring and be careful who you trust. What makes you grumpy? Lack of sleep! Teenage crush? Morten Harkett from A-Ha, I thought he was gorgeous and the songs were pretty good too! You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? My husband, Mum and Dad, friends, our house, which we’re currently doing up, and a nice little gift to St. Mary’s in Hay. Have any bad habits? I find it difficult to relax sometimes. Which bad habits drive you crazy? A lack of manners, and rudeness. What book would you recommend to others? I love the series of books by Alexander McCall-Smith of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency – they’re really easy to pick up and put down and they transport you to

another world of Botswana in Africa. Best present ever received? I was once given a red Mini Metro that had the registration of “OOP” so I called her Daisy, as in Whoops-a-Daisy. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself. The ability to switch off at times and relax. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would like to do a Hot Air Balloon ride over the Serengeti at dawn. I’ve been to Africa a few times and it gets into your blood. I’ve been on safari before and found it a truly memorable experience, but I’ve never been in a hot air balloon and think that combination would be amazing. List five goals on your life’s to-do list. To spend more time in France, to go on holiday on a canal barge, to travel the world, own a business one day and finish renovating our house. Name one regret you have. Not having the guts to do a parachute jump, I would love to soar through the air like a bird but I would never be able to actually jump out of the aeroplane. Name one thing you miss about being a kid. Having no cares in the world. Name one thing you love about being an adult. Making my own decisions. What’s your favourite song of all time? That’s really tricky as I love music but I love Coldplay’s Fix You. I think the words are particularly poignant because they show that, despite whatever difficulties that occur in your life, if you find the person you are meant to be with, they will help and guide you through all of the difficult tough times, stand by you and make everything worthwhile. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Putting my feet up in front of the fire and watching telly. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Sit in the garden, catching some rays, enjoying the sunshine. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Had the privilege of teaching amazing children who will become our citizens of the future. Sum yourself up in five words: Caring, thoughtful, organised, loud and a little crazy!

HYDRANGEA Hydrangeas are popular, hardy garden shrubs highly valued for their late summer flowers in shades of pink, white or blue. The best known are the mophead and lacecap hydrangeas with their large, showy flower heads which persist for many months and may even be dried for winter decoration indoors. Other hydrangeas such as the paniculata cultivars bear large, cone shaped flowers in white or pink while others such as the oak leaved hydrangea have interesting leaf shapes and good autumn colour. Hydrangeas thrive in a moist but well drained soil in a cool semi-shaded part of the garden. Blue hydrangeas require an acid soil or ericaceous compost otherwise the colour will fade to a murky pink. Before planting work plenty of organic matter into the soil and after planting and in subsequent years apply more organic matter as a mulch. This could be well rotted manure, leaf mould, garden compost or composted bark. Hydrangeas also benefit from a feed such as blood, fish and bone or a rose fertiliser each spring. Flower heads on the mopheads and lacecaps are best left on the plants over winter to help protect the buds below and then removed with about 6 inches (15cm) of stem in the spring. If shrubs have outgrown their positions they can be pruned hard in spring but this will result in few flowers until the following year. The hydrangea paniculata cultivars require hard pruning each spring in order to encourage them to flower well. In addition to the shrubby hydrangeas there are also some climbing hydrangeas, one of which is evergreen, which do particularly well on north facing walls or fences where other climbers struggle to perform well. Hydrangeas in all of their forms are therefore excellent garden plants and thoroughly deserve their popularity amongst gardeners. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre.Three Cocks

New Beginning at the Old Cinema Rumours have been rife over recent years about the future of Hay Cinema Bookshop but it still came as something of a shock when the news broke that the company had been sold. Even more surprising was the nature of the deal – a staff buy-out by eight members of the team in Hay, together with the manager of the company’s London shop, Quinto in Charing Cross Road. Converted into a bookshop by Richard Booth in the early seventies, Hay Cinema was purchased by Leon Morelli in 1982 and was the entrepreneur’s first business venture in the Town of Books. The original building has been extended twice to accommodate 250,000 books on over 3 miles of shelving, but still retains many original features like the star-studded ceiling and the decorative panels which surrounded the screen of the old ‘picture house’ as it was known locally in the 1950s.

Deb Clark said “We’ve been delighted by all the good wishes we have received from people in Hay when they heard the news and this has helped convince us that we’ve made the right move in keeping Hay’s first mega-bookshop going”. It is hoped that the bold step taken by the Hay Cinema team will help to rally the book trade in Hay-onWye, the original and best of the Book Towns.

Get crafting with the kids this summer! Fab Crabs Turn beachcombed finds into shoreline critters that’ll help keep holiday memories alive. For each crab, paint a clean, dry shell with acrylic paint and let it dry. Cut three pipe cleaners in half.Twist five halves together at the center. Glue the twisted center to the inside of the shell with kids’ craft glue and let dry. Spread out the pipe cleaners so that each side has five legs. Cut the remaining pipe cleaner half in two, then fold the end of each front leg around a half to form the claw. Bend the section ends to create claws. Glue on googly eyes.

Summer Souvenir Bowl Turn paper souvenirs from your holiday into a container to show off your family’s happy memories. Cut out 1-inch paper circles from colored paper and printed material from your trip – maps, brochures, tickets, photos, and so on. Ask a grown-up to help with the cutting! 45 to 65 paper circles should be enough. Wrap the outside of a cereal bowl in cling-film; try to keep the film as smooth as possible. Place the bowl upside down on greaseproof paper. Brush kids’ craft glue onto a section of the wrapped bowl near the rim. Add a circle, then brush the top of the circle with more glue. Continue adding circles, overlapping them slightly to prevent gaps. Let the bowl dry completely. Remove the paper bowl from the original bowl and gently peel off the cling-film. Paint the inside of the bowl with acrylic paint in a vibrant colour.

Jiggling Jellyfish The perfect summer decor? Homemade sea creatures that flutter in the breeze... Collect materials for the tentacles: curling ribbon, a few strips of bubble wrap, a bath pouf (cut open and unwound), and heavy-duty paper towels cut into spirals. The tentacles can be 12 to 18 inches long. Gather the tentacles at one end and thread them up through the hole of a plastic dome drink lid (from a coffee shop, for example). You could also use an upside-down paper party bowl. Tape the ends around the outside of the lid/bowl with clear tape. Tape a colorful paper cupcake liner over the top of the dome., or use cut-out pages of magazines to découpage the top of the paper bowl. Cover the lid/bowl with three layers of cling-film, one sheet at a time, tucking the excess film under the bottom edge of the lid. Add sticky-backed pearls or jewels to the outer edge of the lid/bowl. Knot the end of a length of elastic cord and tape it to the top of the lid/bowl. Hang the jellyfish on a porch or by a breezy window.

Explorer’s Bag This mesh sack lets natural-treasure collectors leave sand, water, and dirt behind. Fold over the top two inches of a plastic mesh produce bag. such as an onion net (fold outward, not into the bag). Cover the resulting flap with a layer of gaffer or parcel tape. Unfold the bag so the tape is on the inside. Make a handle by folding a 14-inch length of gaffer/ parcel tape in half lengthwise. Adhere the ends of the handle to the tape on the bag. Cover the exposed tape with another layer of tape, sandwiching the handle in between. If the bag is open at the bottom, fold a length of tape over it. Patch any holes in the bag by sandwiching them between two pieces of tape. Use your explorer’s bag to carry all your rock-pool and beachcomber finds!

Henry Norman Grant The Centenary Remembrances of the Great War came into focus again in Hay on 1st July when a service to commemorate the Battle of the Somme and Jutland was held at St Mary’s church, Hay. The names of the 12 from the Hay area who fell in active service were read out during the ceremony. It was particularly poignant that on that first day of the Battle of the Somme, Second Lieutenant Henry Norman Grant fell. Lieutenant Grant was among those who attacked the German line near Beaumont Hamel, leading a Lewis gun team. He was the son of Henry Richard and Jane Victoria Grant of 6 Castle Street, Hay, one of seven children. His parents had a long-established newsagents and printing business in Castle Street. The Brecon Times of 13 July noted that “Norman Grant .... had been reported missing from the time of the Big Push.... he was educated at Christ College, Brecon, and that he had joined the Public School Battalion of the London Royal Fusiliers shortly after war broke out and that he was trained at Sandhurst . It was not until 26 July 1917 that a letter from Buckingham Palace was received by the Grants saying that “ the King and Queen have heard with deep regret that the death of your son .... is now presumed to have taken place in 1916.” Lieutenant Grant was buried at Redan Ridge Cemetary No. 2, Beaumont Hamel. An account of Hay involvement in the Great War can be found in To the Fallen by Eric and Tim Pugh, and in Hay at War 1914-1918 by Alan Nicholls. Article supplied by Alan Nicholls – Hay History Group

A Visit to the Seaside by Ernestine Northover When we pay a visit to the seaside, We venture out onto the sands, And wiggle our toes in soft golden grains, And mould sandcastles with our hands. We so like to collect lots of seashells, Different shapes, sizes and hues, Houses that once belonged to sea creatures, In soft greys, pale beiges and blues.

We take photos of Mother and Father, Fast asleep in striped canvas chairs, Obtained by us sneaking up quietly, And just ‘snapping’ them unawares.

We enjoy splashing out in the water, Which the tide brings fast up the beach, Catching our feet in the green seaweed strands, Which are then dragged back out of reach.

The amusement park, with a loud clamour, The roundabouts spinning so quick, The ghost train, ready to give us a scare, And waltzers, which make us feel sick.

It’s a pleasure to ride on the donkeys, All soft looking, sad eyed, but strong, Each of them needing a love and a pat, Before they’ll carry us along.

The old lady who tells you your fortune, If you have the courage to ask. The coconut shy and pinball machines, Which will always take us to task.

There is the pier with its great attractions, The prom stretching around the bay, Candy floss, ice cream, hot dog stands, Bandstand where musicians can play.

The small boats waiting out by the jetty, Take you for a trip out to sea, With the gentle breeze and the rhythmic waves, It’s a wonderful place to be.

The sparkle, the glitter, and the shimmer, Of sunshine way out on the sea, The salty fresh air, and the blue. blue sky, Means a ‘holiday time’ to me.

At the end of our day at the seaside, With the sun rich red in the west, We will all feel so calm and contented, For our day’s been one of the best.

Have you written a poem and would you be thrilled to see it published in the Wye Local? If yes, please send your poem to clare@wyelocal.co.uk. Please include your name and contact number. Or perhaps in your life you’ve come across a poem that means a lot to you? Send it to us. We look forward to hearing from you.

In July Fairtrade Hay had a stall at The Buttermarket in Hay selling Fairtrade goods including Zaytoun Fairtrade Olive Oil. Thanks go to The Warren Trust for allowing us to be part of this event and to everyone who supported us. Please keep supporting Fairtrade, particularly following the recent referendum vote. Michael Gidney, Chief Executive of The Fairtrade Foundation says, “The decision to leave the European Union will have

profound consequences to poor farmers and workers around the world, including those growing Fairtrade products. All the trade agreements currently in place via the EU will need to be renegotiated. The “Leave” campaign argued that the UK would be in a better position outside the EU to negotiate new trade deals which benefit poor countries, and the government now bears a heavy responsibility to make sure that the UK’s new trade deals are truly fair. The government must fully uphold its international develop commitments in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and ensure that the impact of the decision to leave does not fall on those least able to bear it. Fairtrade will be working to ensure that the farmers and workers around the world who grow our food are not forgotten.” Glasbury Get-Together Club On 28th June, thirteen of our members visited The Bannut Garden at Bringsty on the Herefordshire/ Worcester border. We were warmly welcomed by the new owner and his part-time gardener Julie, who after a welcome cup of tea, gave us a

conducted tour of the gardens. To celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary, the previous owners planted sixty varieties of Hydrangeas. Only a few of these were in bloom. A lovely garden to visit. After lunch at Bringsty Café, we travelled to Holme Lacey to visit Shipley Gardens. The weather had taken a turn for the worse so we didn’t see much of the gardens. However the elderly owner entertained us with his life story and history of the area. A most enjoyable day. For our next club meeting, which is on Wednesday 24th August in Glasbury Village Hall, 2.30pm– 4.30pm, we have a talk from a representative of the Blind Association. Raffle and tea and biscuits later. Small items donated for raffle prizes always appreciated. Guests welcome, and new members welcome! Gwernyfed High School As we draw towards the end of another academic year we enter a period of transition here at Gwernyfed High School. Our Year 13 students have come to the end of high school education and for many this will mark the end of a seven year chapter here at the school. From those nervous and excited footsteps entering Gwernyfed for the first time as a Year 7 pupil; they leave as mature, young adults ready to embark on a world full of opportunities. It is hoped that the school’s motto to ‘persevere’ will stay with them in whatever path they choose and we wish them all the very best for the future. Year 11 students have now finished their GCSEs and are enjoying a well deserved holiday. We look forward to seeing them on results day to celebrate their achievements and to welcoming them back to join the Gwernyfed Sixth Form in September. For some it is the end of a chapter in their lives whilst for others it is just the beginning. We will be

welcoming Year 6 pupils from surrounding Primary Schools to come along to the transition days this month in preparation for joining the school in September. So, when the nervous and excited footsteps enter the school they will be starting their very own exciting chapter in their lives here at Gwernyfed High School. Transition Town Hay Transition: Community Woodland Group Good news, the grant has arrived from the Brecon Beacons Trust so we can buy some of the tools and equipment that we need and get going on some of the jobs (like building new steps) that have been too expensive for us to contemplate previously. We have an invitation to get involved in the Llais y Goedwigg stand at the Royal Welsh Show. As we are one of the groups closest to Builth Wells they are really hoping that we will participate. Its a great networking opportunity too, as we’ll get to meet volunteers from other woodland groups. Transition: Hayfield Garden is flourishing and welcomes visitors to look, participate or simply to buy the beautiful fresh fruit and vegetables.

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in August

The Plantain in the picture, however, is a newcomer to Brecknock and was found by the Botany Group last August on a forest track near Tirabad. This Buckshorn Plantain is also fond of paths and tracks but commoner near the sea. It has more interesting leaves than most of its relatives hence the common name. If you would like to join the Brecknock Botany group do contact the trust. Meetings are informal and there is no need to turn up regularly. We all learn as we go along so beginners are welcome. Plantago Coronopus Plantains are everywhere, particularly under our feet on paths and tracks. We tread on them, crush them and they go on regardless. There are two very common species - broad and narrow leaved - which are easily distinguished that have a variety of names including Rat’s Tails and Traveller’s Foot.

August is a busy month with the Trust with a Family Fun Day on the 13th, an evening devoted to Bats in Brecon on the 17th and a Family walk at Craig y Nos on the 26th.There are plenty of work parties in the reserves to go along and assist with. Full details are at bit.ly/bwtevents. John Crellin
