News from Talgarth by William Powell AM, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth The last few weeks have been characterised by autumn mist, a distinct chill in the air and the occasional need to de-ice the car in the morning. As I gather my thoughts for this last Wye Local column of 2015, the Met Office is warning us about more stormy days in prospect, maybe heralding the onset of winter. One local event that signposts the run up to Christmas each year is the Talgarth Luncheon Club Christmas lunch, which falls this time on Tuesday 1st December. The volunteers will arrive at the Town Hall from early morning to ensure that all the preparations are in place for an occasion enjoyed by all. And this celebration comes only a few weeks after the very same team was out in force to host the fourth annual afternoon tea, in memory of the late Mrs Val Harvey MBE, which raised an impressive £1,420 towards Macmillan Cancer Support. This is thanks to the efforts of all the helpers, who contribute in so many ways to our community. Alun Tandy, Macmillan’s Development Manager for Mid and North Wales, was in attendance again this year, to express his appreciation. It is that very same spirit of volunteering that is also demonstrated by the Talgarth Christmas Lights Group, whose hard work over many weeks will be lighting up our town in the run up to Christmas. Last weekend, the Bronllys Hospital & Community League of Friends held their Autumn Fair in Talgarth Church Hall, raising £371.70 for this best of causes. I know that Maggie Sims and her colleagues are grateful to all who supported the event, which also served to recruit some new volunteers to swell their ranks. The League continues to do sterling work, harnessing the talent of their volunteers for the good of Bronllys Hospital and the wider community.
It was also my pleasure recently to be present for the Minis’ and Juniors’ book launch of 50 Years in Green, White and Black at Gwernyfed RFC. The book, like so much at the Club, is very much a team effort and documents the history of the Club since its inception, in the days of my late teachers Bernard Altmeyer and David Knapp, through the glory days, but also the leaner times right up to the present day. I intend to place a copy in the National Library of Wales and indeed in the Library of the National Assembly for Wales, to ensure that the Gwernyfed story continues to be heard far and wide. Copies at £20 are available from the Clubhouse and I am sure that it will prove very popular locally, as well as Gwernyfed RFC Ladies’ annual fundraising initiative, their 2016 Calendar, after its royal endorsement by Prince William last year! I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks, at one of the several community events signalling the season of Advent. The Christmas Market is being held again this year at Talgarth Livestock Market on Saturday 5th December and promises to be a special occasion, with the venue provided courtesy of Sunderlands and Thompsons Auctioneers. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issues of concern, please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone on 07703 112113, by email at william.powell@assembly.wales, via my Facebook page William Powell AM or on Twitter @WilliamPowellAM. Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday 4th December from 5pm at Talgarth TiRC. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue that is troubling you, at this busy time of year. Happy Christmas! William

CHRIS DAVIES MP
News from Chris Davies Your local MP
Hello from Westminster! It has been another busy month of events and action here in Brecon and Radnorshire. I’d like to start by saying a huge thank you to all those who organised the Remembrance Day services I attended in Brecon, Glasbury and Hay-onWye. Each service struck exactly the right tone and I was honoured to lay wreaths to remember those who fought and fell in the service of our country. As many of you will know, lamb prices are still low and this is hurting our farmers. However, there is a market that we are currently not utilising as we could: The military. Our armed forces procure around £1 million worth of lamb each year and I want to see this market tapped. That is why I met with the Minister for Procurement in the Ministry of Defence, Philip Dunne, to push him to put more Welsh lamb on our armed forces’ table. The Minister was very receptive and will now push more military facilities to buy more local produce where they can. The Minister’s desire to see more Welsh lamb being fed to our servicemen and women is hardly surprising, as in Brecon and Radnorshire we know how to produce great produce. Indeed, when I questioned the Secretary of State in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Liz Truss, about our lamb she described Brecon and Radnorshire as a “food powerhouse”. It is great to see our area being recognised in this way in the highest echelons of government. Notably, she is not the only cabinet Minister to be recognising our area. Speaking to the Chancellor this week, he brought up how much he enjoys canoeing on the Wye and wandering the bookstores of Hayon-Wye. So next time you pop in to pick up your next bestseller, don’t be too surprised to see the Chancellor doing the same! I will keep on working to put Brecon and Radnorshire back on the map and if you want to contact me on the above or any other issue I would like to hear from you. You can e-mail me on chris.davies.mp@ parliament.uk or call me on 01982 559 180; and if you see me out and about do stop and say hello!

“Make the most of your home”
POINSETTIA The Poinsettia could have been specifically designed for Christmas with its bright red halo and festive green foliage. However, that red halo is not just a pretty face: it’s the secret of the Poinsettia’s popularity. It can last for months because the red halo consists of long-lasting leafy bracts rather than soft petals that shrivel up quickly. This allows the Poinsettia to look its best for up to 12 weeks or more. Poinsettias come from Mexico and they were discovered by Joel Poinsett in 1825 and were associated with Christmas even then. Poinsettias need bright but not strong light, away from strong sun and draughts. They need a minimum temperature of 13 to 15 Celsius (55–59 Fahrenheit). It’s also a good idea to be careful when transporting Poinsettias from the garden centre to your home in the winter, as the cold outdoor temperatures can damage the foliage. Once home water Poinsettias sparingly as overwatering can damage plants. As a rule of thumb, only water when the surface of the compost has begun to dry out. With care Poinsettias can be kept for a second year but they tend to develop into woody, leggy shrubs. It’s much better to save up the pennies and buy another that has been cosseted and encouraged into growth by a regime of good food, greenhouse lights and heat! Finally, if you would like a change from the traditional red bracts, there are now new varieties with dusky pink, pale yellow, deep plum or cream bracts and some even have variegated leaves. Every home should have one this Christmas.

News from Kirsty Williams Welsh Liberal Democrat AM for Brecon & Radnorshire Many people have been in touch with regards to the proposed rise in Assembly Members’ pay. I recently voted against the Assembly Commission’s Budget because it included the £10,000 pay rise for AMs. The Welsh Liberal Democrats were the only par ty to vote against this pay rise. The 18% rise in salary is completely unacceptable at a time when other public sector workers have had their salaries either frozen or rise only slightly. By voting the budget down, I had hoped it would send a powerful message to the new Remuneration Board to think again on these proposals. I’m hugely disappointed that the Welsh Liberal Democrats ended up being the only par ty to
make a stand on this issue. The excuses from the other par ties about why they had to vote to give themselves a pay rise simply don’t wash: there was still time to get another commission budget through with these outrageous proposals removed. Let me be clear that if the people of Brecon and Radnorshire choose to put their faith in me again in May, I will not be keeping this pay rise and the Welsh Liberal Democrats will continue to campaign against this unfair and unnecessary pay rise. Remember, I work for you, so if you would like to raise this or any other issue with me, please email me at Kirsty.Williams@assembly.wales or call my office on 01874 625 739.

News from Glasbury Ward
by County Councillor James Gibson-Watt It’s nice to be able to report a bit of good news. Over the next couple of months LED bulbs will be gradually installed in the streetlights in Clyro, Glasbury and Three Cocks. Many lights currently off will be turned back on and the ‘orange’ glow from current ones replaced with ‘clean’ LED light. Not only will we get more light and ‘black holes’ filled in, energy use will be greatly reduced as well. By the time you read this, a number will already have been installed and previous dangerously dark areas, such as the A438/B4351 junction in Clyro will be properly lit again. However, I am painfully aware that not everybody wants streetlights switched back on! For some, this would be a real nuisance. So, if you do not want a light currently off switched on, or a light previously off has already been switched back on and you don’t like it, or would prefer a light to go off from a certain hour, etc – please do not hesitate to contact me (by email at jg-w@live.co.uk or by phone on 07971 048 737 or 01497 820 434). Those who follow my Facebook page will know that I’ve been looking into the mobile ‘phone signal problem in this area. Kirsty Williams AM kindly pointed me to this project: http://www.broadbanduk. org/2013/08/01/dcms-and-arqiva-reveal-locationsof-mobile-infrastructure-projects/, a £150 million UK Government-funded scheme, announced in 2013, to install the infrastructure to cover the many ‘not spots’, of which we have so many round here. Powys is supposed to be in the first rank for the work, but almost nothing has happened so far. As a result of an email exchange with our MP, Chris Davies, I now understand from him that the UK Government has done a £5 billion ‘deal’ with the main network providers and is committed to ensuring that, by 2017, 90% of the UK (and 90% of the population) will be receiving a 4G mobile ‘phone signal. Great, if it happens, but will this area be part of that 90%? I’ll do everything I can to see that it is. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.

Vintage Society helps charities
Vice-President Mr John Lloyd presenting a cheque for ÂŁ500 to Mrs Helen Pruett and Mrs Helen Morris from the Wales Air Ambulance. At a recent meeting the Three Cocks Vintage Society approved donations of ÂŁ500 to be given to each of the local Air Ambulances and the Intensive Care Unit at Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny. The money was raised at their very successful Steam and Vintage Rally at Hay-on-Wye last August. This event proved to be a fitting tribute to their late Chairman Mr Chris Jones who sadly passed away just a month before, having been at the helm for many years.

It’s our health – let’s take control! Sometimes in the month between writing one article here and the next, so many events, personal experiences, media stories or comments are made on one subject, it’s as if the universe is contriving to force the next topic! It almost writes itself! Such has been this month! OK: we all know the NHS is struggling. At its worst, we’re getting appointments with the Doctor sure, but maybe 2 weeks hence. Then once you’re in the system, it may feel as if all your body parts are being treated by different departments with none really communicating to join up all your dots. Further, in the effort to provide uniform care for all, this may add to the sense we’re not being treated as an individual. To make sure they leave no (litigious) stone unturned we can be overly tested, diagnosed and treated. Of course in some ways this thorough approach is a good thing, and I’m certainly not knocking the NHS – they’re under huge pressure and have to watch their backs. At its best it’s remarkable: the best in the world, with compassionate staff
and brilliant knowledge – international pioneers. But in any event – there is a way forward here, of taking control of your own health, to help stave off the preceding issues of those more serious ones needing medical intervention. Put another way; if we can start to improve our lot with (here we go again!) making good choices with our nutrition, getting out into fresh air, moving!, dropping bad habits, getting enough sleep, trying to reduce stress, and listening to what’s going on with your body, then we’re giving ourselves a hugely improved chance of not going to see a Doctor at all! This way at least we’re in charge, pro-actively working with what we have and making the most of our lives! (In addition you might even start to feel just a little bit fabulous!) If you’re hesitant to start please email me for my fact sheet, ‘Self Health’, with no further obligation: mizzfit@mail.com. Or just email for help – I love your emails! Get to really know... Betty came to live in Hay 23 years ago and took on the job of Town Clerk, retiring after 13 years. Chair of Hay Community Support for 18 years, she also joined the Steering Committee which set up Hay U3A and was Chair for 2 years. Now, she says, she’s happy to just smell the roses and have fun. Name: Betty Maura-Cooper. Place of birth? South London. Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? Widowed. Occupation? In January I gave up paid employment and finally retired. Children? Son & daughter living locally, daughter in Australia. Pets? An extremely small rescued Westie. What was your favourite childhood television programme? I spent my childhood with my nose in books or playing out in the local countryside.Thankfully, television didn’t exist. Are you a collector of anything? Dust and weeds, apparently. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Hey, I’m still here. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I’ll just finish this chapt... Do you believe in ghosts? Not exactly, but maybe some unseen paranormal something... Most exciting thing you’ve won? I seem to be good at coming second. Second in the Llangollen International Short Story Competition, second in the Annual Writers News Short Story Competition, at a time when I was doing a lot of writing. I sympathise with Buzz Aldrin but it’s better than coming nowhere. Two lessons life has taught you? Only two? Where to start? Well, it certainly doesn’t pan out the way you thought it would – and there’s very little you can do about it. What makes you grumpy?Trolls. I published an e-book and a nasty troll posted a bad review in which she gave away the integral plot, killing any sales stone dead. I often read well-reviewed books and don’t enjoy them but I wouldn’t dream of spoiling them for others. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? My family and other animals, to quote Gerald Durrell.
Have any bad habits? I’m addicted to playing Scrabble. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Things not being put back where they belong. Do you believe in the afterlife? I have this fantasy of all the dogs we’ve ever owned and are now in doggy heaven, falling over each other to greet me at the gate. What book would you recommend to others? Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver. Best present ever received? A funny old car which I called the Grey Elephant, which is what it resembled, when we were very broke and I was very pregnant. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Sorry, you can’t ‘list one thing’. Being too pedantic, perhaps? If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Airport security squashed my travel bug. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: I’ve enjoyed a full and eventful life and have reached a plateau of contentment. I wish I’d walked the Camino de Santiago, though. And I should have learnt to swim. Name one regret you have: That my husband, my elder son, eldest daughter and a stepson have all pre-deceased me. Regret is hardly an adequate word though. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Energy. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Self-indulgence. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? In the summer (when we have one) sitting in the garden reading, with the birds singing, the bees buzzing and the flowers filling the air with perfume. In the winter, reading by the fire or eating with my friends. Have any hidden talents? Haven’t found one yet. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Completed this questionnaire – I’m normally a very private person. Sum yourself up in five words: Hates housework, loves animals, resilient.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Here we are, the last edition of the year and looking back I don’t seem to have achieved anything with the business. However, closer examination shows progress – it’s just one accepts improvements and very quickly forgets how it was. We are now all thinking about Christmas. The trees are in stock and orders going well. I strongly advise getting one of the ones that doesn’t shed its leaves: it will look good all through the holiday and not leave traces in the carpet until springtime. Other items are coming into stock but it always pays to put an order in for the big amounts needed before Christmas as some things will inevitably sell out and although we hate to disappoint anyone there is nothing that can be done at the last minute. A lot can be done in advance for Christmas and I know that my mother used to prepare all her vegetables in advance of the day and freeze them until needed. This really did work and took so much pressure off at the last minute. So far this autumn the UK produce has been very good and not expensive. It has been noticeable that the wholesale markets are getting quieter, which is always a worry as when that happens the big companies try to push the smaller ones out and then take them over. This can lead to lack of choice and higher prices. I observed this trend a few years ago in Cardiff Market and that is why I pulled out of going there and I now use Bristol on Tuesday mornings and on Friday mornings Kieron goes to Birmingham. This gives us a better range of products and access to some quite unusual things from all over the world. This year there are a lot more sprout tops in the market and I have noticed that the Roman cauliflower (Romanescue) is now being grown as a main crop whereas before it was very much a speciality. This has brought the price down from over £2 to little more than £1. It’s easy to prepare and cook and is most tasty. With Christmas being so busy with big family events and various parties and so on most people seem to overlook the fact that we usually see the first Seville Oranges for marmalade between Christmas and New Year. they are a short season and will be near to finished by the end of January. Working in a hot kitchen on a cold and miserable day is actually quite enjoyable and the row of newly filled jars a thing of pride and satisfaction. I hope you all have a happy Christmas and success and fulfillment as we move into 2016. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham) Teacher: “If I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats and another 2, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “No, listen carefully... If I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven.” Teacher: “Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples, and another two apples and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Six.” Teacher: “Good. Now if I gave you two cats, and another two cats and another two, how many would you have?” Johnny: “Seven!” Teacher: “Johnny, where in the heck do you get seven from?!” Johnny: “Because I’ve already got a cat!”

RJ Joinery Services celebrates ten years in business Roy James formed the company RJ Joinery Services Ltd in November 2005 after previously working for stabling, joinery manufacturing and mail order companies, and is now celebrating a successful ten years in business. Roy began his joinery career at Cam Equestrian where he managed the joinery and mail order section for 19 years. After gaining all this experience Roy decided the time was right in 2005 to start his own business. He started up in the old carpenter’s workshop at Talgarth Hospital and after 18 months moved to the Glanwye Business Park where he is still today, albeit in a larger unit now as the business outgrew the original unit. Four members of staff work at the company and a further six are subcontracted, generating employment in the local area. Roy started with joinery and has expanded into mail order where he can supply a full range of products including stabling, garden buildings, accessories and
hardware to most areas in the UK, Ireland and Europe. They supply anything from a stable door through to a full timber stable complex, made to suit customers’ requirements. They also manufacture timber frame field shelters, garages, garden rooms, garden storage, toilet and shower blocks, small animal housing and much more. RJ Joinery can also project manage from the groundworks to the overall finish. Offering anything from a garden shed to commercial shower blocks, they are currently building an outside classroom for Clifford Primary School. “I’ve enjoyed starting up and expanding the business over the last ten years and I’m proud to say we are big enough to cope and small enough to care. No job is too big or too small,” said Roy. Have a project in mind? Contact Roy or Jess on the details given below.

Open Acoustic Session Every Wednesday
The October meeting of the Talgarth & District History Society was a fascinating talk by Bryan Davies on the Battle of Agincourt, the 600th anniversary of which was celebrated this year. Bryan is a noted expert on the battle and he had undertaken some experimental archaeology prior to the meeting, by way of a lotion he had prepared, which was based upon a recipe for the treatment of wounds at the time of the original battle. The lotion was passed around the room, and although I am confident no-one in the audience attempted to test the effectiveness of the potion, Bryan assured the audience that a lady who had attended one of his previous talks was adamant that she had applied it to a graze which had previously been resistant to medication, but which responded positively to the application of Bryan’s potion. We agreed to take Bryan’s word on this! On Thursday 26th November, Jill Fawke will be presenting a talk on Tregunter House, a famous Talgarth landmark until it was demolished in the early 1920s. The talk will commence at 7.30pm at Gwernyfed Rugby Club. The following month the year concludes with a special Dickens themed Christmas meal on Thursday 17th December (the anniversary of Dickens’ birth). The Society meets on the last Thursday of the month and the upcoming talks are posted on the society’s website – talgarthanddistricthistoricalsociety.co.uk. The Hay Writers’ Circle has just launched an anthology called Pick and Mix.The Circle was formed over 30 years ago by Frances Copping, who is the group’s President. Although over the years there have been magazines, this book is the first major work they have published. On 14th November a party was held at Booth’s Bookshop to launch Pick and Mix; at over 90 pages long and featuring contributions from ten members of the writing circle. The book includes a mix of fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Some of the pieces included have been previously read at either the Hay Festival or one of the Hay Writers’ Circle Christmas concerts. The group holds three competitions each year. Their nonfiction competition is sponsored by and named after the King of Hay: it is the Richard Booth Prize for Non-Fiction. Now they are published authors themselves! The colourful cover should tempt you, as Pick and Mix will make a good Christmas present, particularly for the residents of Hayon-Wye to whom this book is dedicated. Pick and Mix can be bought at Booth’s Bookshop in Hay and on Amazon. The ISBN is 978-0-9932564-2-4 and the price is only £5.

The CHRISTMAS PARTY got a bit out of hand, and I knew I’d had too much to drink. So I took a taxi. On the way home I knew I’d made the right choice – just outside Hay the police were stopping cars at a checkpoint, but they waved the taxi straight through and I arrived home safe and sound. The only problem is that I’ve now got a taxi hidden in my garage and I don’t know what to do with it...

Helen set to share her slimming secrets Having trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s leading slimming club, Helen Furnell has been lending a guiding hand and support to slimmers in Hay-on-Wye since July 2014 and is now opening a group at the Rugby Club in Talgarth on Wednesday 30th December at 7pm. With the latest government figures revealing that 59% of Powys’ adult population are now overweight or obese, Helen says her new role has never been more important. She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but I love it and now I just can’t wait to get started in Talgarth. It’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target.
“Like a lot of slimmers, I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. It’s all about getting the support to choose a healthier lifestyle like finding ways to become more active even if you’re not very mobile or don’t like exercise. “My weight loss has completely changed my life. On top of that, I’ve got a new career. It’s well-paid and the hours fit around my other commitments, but best of all I’m doing something that I’m passionate

about. As a slimmer myself I know how hard it can be and I couldn’t have lost 7 stone without my Consultant and my group. Sharing recipes and other ideas, and overcoming disappointments as well as celebrating success was all part of the journey, so there’ll be lots of support, encouragement and fun at my Slimming World group.” For more information or to join Helen’s group either pop along on 30th December or call her on 07939 114452. Is it me, or do we not care about our county? This is our home area and just as we would not expect to see rubbish in our own houses, why should we treat Powys any differently? It drives me potty to see so much litter/rubbish in our schools, roadsides, waterways, towns and countryside.
Earlier this week whilst out for a walk in Blaen y Glyn Isaf (one of our most beautiful National Park areas) my friend and I came across hundreds of foil confetti sequins scattered over one or two of the pathways by the waterfalls. Also, there were red ribbons strewn about. Further down the path there were several deflated white balloons. It appeared that someone had had a wedding service or celebration there. Lovely idea – but, come on, clear it up afterwards, hey? This is only one example: look around and see what I mean. If you feel similarly about this topic, do think about joining the ‘Keep Wales Tidy’ group, which provides equipment and information to encourage cleaning up rubbish in Wales and respecting our environment more. Join this Litter Champion group and help us all to do our bit and leave everything a little better than we find it. After all, with council cuts – we can’t expect council workers to do all our dirty work. Article supplied by Paul Hartley

Congratulations to a shining star of responsible tourism! In November Talgarth Mill, a restored 200-year-old water mill famous for putting the small Welsh town of Talgarth back on the map as a tourist destination, received its greatest accolade yet when awarded a silver medal at the World Responsible Tourism Awards in London. The gold medal went to Urban Adventure in Australia. The judges in the ‘Best for Engaging People and Culture’ category were looking for tourism providers with deep, long-standing connections and commitments to the local community and exciting policies and practices for celebrating local culture and ways of life. Professor Harold Goodwin, Chair of the judging panel, commented on why Felin Talgarth Mill had been recognised, saying “A community project run by 30 very committed volunteers – the cultural activities
of milling and baking have brought economic vitality back to the town and enabled the co-located craft and cottage interior businesses to launch. They have used tourism to restore their mill and bring economic development to their market town.” Liz Rose, Manager of Felin Talgarth Mill, commented on their win: “This is such good news for our amazing team of volunteers who have worked so hard for the success of the project. Some volunteer organisations have difficulty attracting and keeping volunteers, but many of ours have been involved since the renovation of the Mill five years ago and it’s great to see their commitment recognised. It’s been an exciting year at the Mill with no less than three Great Taste Awards for our various types of stone ground flour and now recognition on the world stage alongside some tourist industry giants.”

pollination without any need for showy petals. The Holly Blue butterfly, which is being seen more frequently in Brecknock, depends on Ivy flower buds as well as those of Holly which are available early in the spring. This allows this attractive butterfly to have two generations per year, one fed mainly on Ivy and the other on Holly.
Hedera helix Ivy flowers through into November and beyond providing the last major source of nectar and pollen for bees and other insects at that time of year. The dark blueish-black berries will be abundant in many places now. The photograph I think shows that the seemingly dull flowers are worthy of a close look. Glistening nectar can be seen surrounding the stigma and this attracts insects by smell for

A crafty little Christmas! Perhaps at Christmas more than any other time of the year, handmade cards and gifts evoke a sense of tradition, and timeless handicraft skills can be used in so many ways to add to the occasion. Home-made indoor and outdoor decorations, table centres, gift boxes, wrapping papers and even simple trinkets and toys can all be created or packaged from everyday items and raw materials, a few basic tools and accessories – and a generous sprinkling of imagination. But what if you’re no Kirstie Allsop or Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen? Don’t despair, because the internet is full of inspirational and clever ideas. Sites such as Pinterest, that describes itself as a ‘catalogue of ideas’, is a great starting point. Search some more and you’ll discover websites from all over the world dedicated to seasonal handicrafts as well how to make and makeover items to individualise and transform your home. Of course, Jones Home Hardware in Hay-on-Wye is another source of inspiration, and certainly a one-stop shop for many of your basic handicraft requirements. There you’ll find a range of glues and adhesive tapes for bonding pretty much anything to anything, together
with tacks, nails, screws, twine, cord and wire, and a huge selection of paints, PVA and varnishes. If your arsenal of tools is a bit depleted we also stock essentials such as knives, scissors, glue guns, pliers, hammers and more. In fact, however simple or ambitious your project is set to become we can help you accomplish it, along with all the free advice and assistance you could possibly need to get you started. Whether you favour a traditional or contemporary seasonal theme, or want to create something unique for a special occasion, paint is often the one medium that helps achieve just the look you want. There are so many specialist finishes, such as shabby chic chalk paints, traditional colour palettes and vibrant modern hues, that what begins as a simple craft project may well inspire an entire room makeover! We all have a creative streak waiting to be unleashed. Begin the search for yours by visiting Jones Home Hardware and make this Christmas extra special.

Our Dinner Date by Marjorie Gane At 12 noon, I hear the phone – It’s my fancy man, and he’s got a plan. At one, we’re done! We’ve sorted a date. It’s tonight, mustn’t be late! At two, I’ve found a pair of shoes. My favourite pair, that I love to wear. At three, which dress would suit me? Or would I look more cute in a smart suit? At four, should I wear anything more? How about a ring? Or another pretty thing? At five, I’m feeling alive! I can’t wait for our dinner date! At six, I head to ‘Rick’s’, The new restaurant in town, it can’t let us down. At seven, I’m in heaven – Nothing beats this restaurant’s treats! At eight, I’ve enjoyed our dinner date. Now for some brandy, and two dozen quails’ eggs might come in handy! At nine, it’s time To go. Oh no! At ten, I go to bed and then, I dream about how nice my day has been.

‘Breconshire Birds’ Annual Report – 2014 The ‘Breconshire Birds’ Annual Report for 2014 has just been published by Brecknock Wildlife Trust and is now available to purchase. This edition continues a long line of annual reports describing local birdlife sightings since 1962, and is the eleventh produced on behalf of the Trust by Andrew King, Brecknock Bird Recorder. Occurrence of 174 species seen within the old county boundaries in 2014 are described, with a further 4 races or sub-species. Considering the county’s geographic position, away from coasts and upland in nature, this is a healthy total and testament to the hard work put in by both local and visiting bird-watchers. One new species was added to the County archive – a Lesser Scaup duck – that spent four months at Llangorse Lake. The finding of this Canadian species, rare in the UK, is described in a separate article by Mark Waldron, and was made more fascinating by the bird having had a harmless bill-saddle fitted in Portugal in December 2013. As a result, the ability to track this individual from Portugal to Llangorse and afterwards to Yorkshire constitutes the first series of recoveries of a trans-Atlantic duck anywhere in Europe. Other unusual species include Siberian Chiffchaffs, Great White Egrets, Bittern, Gannet, Long-tailed Duck, Stone Curlew, Iceland Gull, Blue-headed Wagtail, Firecrest and Snow Buntings. Half of these were found at Llangorse Lake reflecting the importance of that site to birds, and its popularity with bird-watchers. Other species increasingly seen in Brecknock include Osprey, Mandarin Duck, Barnacle Goose, Jack Snipe, Nightjar and Shorteared Owl. National declines for Curlew, Lapwing, Lesser-spotted Woodpecker and Willow Tit are mirrored locally.

A fine selection of photographs and sketches are also included in the Report that extends to 80 pages. Our organic RUBY RED Devon Beef and Lamb reared on our farms at Lower Porthamal and Ciliau, or bought locally. Our beef is hung for 21 days before being prepared for the shop. Rib and Sirloin on the bone a speciality. Free range pedigree Welsh pork from Builth Wells. Turkeys, Geese, Ducks and Chickens are either organic or free range. This year as an alternative to Turkey we will be having Packington free range Cockerel. They are slow reared for an exceptional taste. We now cure our own Bacon along with our home-made free range sausage. We have a small deli counter selling organic butter, cheese, milk and eggs plus Bernie’s pasties and Seasonal pies. We also stock award-winning Trealy farm charcuterie.

Regeneration Group fun
Talgarth & District Regeneration Group aims to promote growth and regeneration within the town and surrounding area. The group currently organises: Talgarth Rural Market; environmental projects such as planters and flowers, together with initiating new projects to enhance structures and buildings in the area; Flix in the Stix; and an annual Christmas Market. This year saw the introduction of two new events. Talgarth 2015 Sports was a great success, with free activities over a three day period including golf, fencing, judo, football, bowls and much more, with a finale of fun sport, the egg & spoon and sack races for children and adults providing much competitive hilarity. WWI was commemorated with a special evening of remembrance, with an historical exhibition and presentation, recitations, a busker and a singalong. The group is a registered not-for-profit organisation of volunteers that loves to welcome new, enthusiastic members to join us – visit their Facebook pages.

Winter warmer As you step in from the cold, it is lovely to be welcomed with the warming aromas of spicy clove, aromatic pine needles and uplifting citrus. You can buy room diffusers which gently scent the room all day or scented candles which when lit can lift your mood and make your home feel cosy & inviting. You can also make your own in the form of a ‘pot pourri’ or a natural Christmas wreath. Let us take a fresh look at homemade pot pourri. Traditionally dried botanical materials are used such as pine cones, birch cones, orange slices, dried eucalyptus leaves, wood shavings (which fix the scent very well) even nuts and berries, you can create your own personal blend. Why not go out foraging this weekend, a great thing to do with the family.Take a bag with you otherwise your pockets will get full! A mixture of different botanicals can be used but it makes a dramatic and stunning display to put out a container full of one type of botanical like pine or birch cones. Give the cones a wash and then leave them to dry in a warm place for a few days until they are super dry. Put them in a sealable plastic bag and add ground cinnamon, clove buds, and a pinch of nutmeg then shake up and leave to infuse for a few days. This is a great base for your pot pourri. You can then add essential oils, pine perhaps or my own synergistic blend called ‘No. 2 - Scent of Christmas’ which is a mix of orange, clove, bay and frankincense - either pure essential oils or room mist. Now find a pretty bowl and place by the entrance and don’t forget to refresh with scent every now and then. Other dried material you can use – allspice, cedar wood shavings, cinnamon sticks, fennel seeds, lavender, lemon balm leaves, lemon peel, marjoram, mint, orange peel, pelargonium leaves from scented varieties, pine needles, rose flowers, rosemary leaves, flowers and essential oils. This year The Hourglass celebrates ten years of bringing mineral specimens, crystals, fossils and fascinating collectables from locations all over the world. Dave, Lou and Georgie are grateful for the support of all their customers, for the shared interest in their amazing collection, and for the support and appreciation shown to the exhibitors in their small gallery of local artists. In their surprisingly large shop in Hay (between the Three Tuns and The Globe), they stock a huge trove of beautiful and unusual gifts and treasures, naturally formed or inspirationally created. They also exhibit for limited periods a collection of artworks by local artists. To mark the occasion of their 10th anniversary, they are offering Hourglass customers a 15% discount on all purchases from 14th November to 31st December 2015. With cards, photography, crystals, fossils, ancient artefacts, jewellery, books, carvings and art, you’ll find something for everyone in this Aladdin’s Cave.

Hay’s craft beer shop is 1 year old!
Hay-on-Wye’s craft beer bottle shop Beer Revolution is one year old! Beer Revolution stocks hundreds of beers from some of the UK’s top microbreweries. Welsh beers feature heavily on its shelves, with innovative and up-and-coming small batch brewers like Hay’s Lucky 7 given the space to shine among established big names. And the shop’s location affords farm-door access to some of Herefordshire’s best artisan cider producers. The shop opened a year ago on a cobbled courtyard in the grounds of Hay Castle. Its whitewashed stone walls keep the stock flavour-saving cool even in the height of summer while the upstairs mezzanine has been transformed into a grungy bar and tasting lounge. The shop has marked its first birthday by launching a website and online store. Stock is constantly rotating as the owners snag whatever catches their eye (or their palate!) – for what’s new, keep an eye on www.beerrevolution.co.uk.

Well, we’re already looking forward to spring – the tulip and daffodil bulbs have been planted. Also, enjoy the Christmas celebrations that are almost here, and here’s hoping that the winter weather will not be as bad as forecast.
Over the last 9 months, the Gwernyfed community have been actively engaged in a wide range of fund raising activities to provide a new school and community minibus.
If you haven’t put your name on the list for Christmas Lunch, and would like to join us please give us a ring. This will be on Wednesday 9th December at 12pm for 12.30pm at The Old Barn,Three Cocks. Hay! However there are always some people who are difficult to buy for, and Hay Vouchers offer the perfect way to allow the lucky recipient to choose a gift they will really treasure. Many local businesses are already talking about buying Hay Vouchers to use as staff rewards, which would be a nice touch. Any local businesses who aren’t already taking part in the initiative should speak to Andrew at Eighteen Rabbit (andrew@eighteenrabbit.co.uk) or Debbie at Pughs@Londis (dlouisedavies@btinternet. com) to arrange to receive more information and their window sticker.
The team hopes to see lots of people at their Christmas Carol Concert in St Mary’s Church at 3pm on Thursday 17th December with the marvellous Monday Choir. Tea and mince pies will be served after the service and entry will be free for members and £3 for non-members. The minibus will be running for members that afternoon (see advert on page 46).
Trustees have confirmed Mary Fellowes as Chairperson and Dr Ainsleigh Rice as Treasurer for the forthcoming year. We were also happy to welcome Richard Gardiner, a current volunteer, as a new Trustee.
You’ll see our volunteers and Friends of Dial-a-Ride selling Christmas Draw tickets at the Hay Co-op on 26th and 28th November. The Co-op will also be selling them at the kiosk for the whole of that week and we’re grateful for their help. Golesworthy’s and Londis have agreed to sell tickets, or they can be bought directly from the office – Monday to Friday, 9am to 12 noon. We have some great prizes this year including vouchers from the Black Mountain Lodge and the Castlefields. The Co-op have kindly agreed to help us fill our hamper so it will be at least as big as last year!
Harold Cumbes, a familiar face in Hay, has retired from Dial-a-Ride after 19 years of service. Members and staff alike have appreciated his loyal and friendly contribution for many years and we wish him the very best for his retirement.
December will be a very busy time for us with lots of Christmas events for our groups and members, and we’re looking forward to all of them! In the meantime we’d like to wish our members, volunteers and supporters a very Merry Christmas.

Transition Town Hay Local currencies and vouchers: At the end of September, the Transition Group was given a talk by the Bristol Pound Community Interest Company. The Bristol Pound is a form of community currency, launched in 2012 and run through the local Credit Union.
