News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over the past month or so, we have been blessed with warm temperatures and glorious sunshine. As well as giving our visitor economy a welcome boost, it has also enabled our farmers to make progress with their harvest, allowing them and their families to get out and support local agricultural shows, which are such a valuable networking opportunity for those who make their living from the land. As I sign off this month’s column, I am looking ahead to a busy schedule at the Royal Welsh Show. It is really important to the Powys economy that we play host every year to Europe’s premiere agricultural event. In 2015, Powys is also home to the National Eisteddfod of Wales from 1st – 8th August at Meifod near Welshpool, which is such a great celebration of Welsh language and culture. Just as our local schools were on the point of breaking up for the summer, we received the most welcome of news. The legal challenge against Powys County Council’s proposed closure of Gwernyfed High School had been successful. Recognising that they were in serious breach of the School Organisation Code 2013 – the regulations that govern school organisation and closure in Wales – the Council agreed to settle out of court and to set aside the Cabinet decision of the 24th March 2015 to proceed with the closure plans. It has been my privilege to support Julie Evans of Brynderwen in her action – and we have reason to be grateful to her, as well as to community activist John Fitzgerald and solicitor Michael Imperato for submitting such a compelling set of witness statements to court. We now have a valuable opportunity to regroup as a community and to come forward, as I have said previously, with a better plan. This week, I had the opportunity to raise the work of the Powys Health and Well Being Action Group in promoting the redevelopment of the Bronllys

Hospital site with the First Minister, the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, in the final Plenary session of the summer term. I am pleased that he committed to discussing with Health Minister, Prof Mark Drakeford AM, the potential of seconding a Welsh Government officer to support the group in its multi-faceted work. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to update group members on this earlier today, following the poignant poetry reading by Kirsty Williams AM at the opening of the ‘At Ease’ Veterans’ Garden in the hospital grounds. I am delighted that my friend James Gibson Watt has been nominated as Welsh Liberal Democrat candidate for the Powys County Council vacancy in Glasbury Ward. I have always valued James’ wise counsel, on Gwernyfed High School, Bronllys Hospital and much besides. James would once again be a huge asset to the County Council - and he enjoys my wholehearted support for the byelection on Thursday 13th August. I hope to see many of you at local events in the coming weeks. I am especially looking forward to the opening of the 3 day Talgarth 2015 Sports on Friday, 31st July and, of course, our very own Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains celebrates its 20th anniversary on August Bank Holiday weekend. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on 07703 112113 or by email: william.powell@assembly. wales Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 7th August from 5:00pm at TalgarthTiRC – or just pop into the TiRC when you are passing. Best wishes, William

CHRIS DAVIES MP

News from Chris Davies Your local MP

Since my last report to the readers of this excellent magazine it has been a very busy time in Brecon & Radnorshire, particularly as we gear up to the Royal Welsh Show – which I am greatly looking forward to. I have been holding regular surgeries and have been involving myself in many local issues. One particular issue at the moment is the potential loss of the Post Office in Bronllys, a plight many villages face across our area. I am committed to fight the closures, as I know how integral a part of a community the local Post Office is. In other surgeries, people have raised the issue of the inadequate broadband service in Brecon & Radnorshire. I believe that we deserve better and I will be writing to the Minister in Welsh Government to ensure that superfast broadband is delivered on time, in order that our businesses can compete on a level playing field with the rest of the country. I enjoy taking up and raising issues on my constituents’ behalf and I am getting used to being asked tough questions. However, nothing could have prepared me for the grilling I received from the children of Franksbridge Primary School, whose questions were by far the toughest I have yet to face! It was a pleasure to see so many of the pupils engaging with politics, which is a good prospect for the future.

Surgery times and other contact details will be published very shortly. In the meantime, if you have any issues you would like to discuss please contact me by way of:

While I was encouraged to see the pupils so engaged with their education, I am very concerned over the future of where our children are educated. The school modernisation programme and Welsh Government’s “one size fits all” education model is a threat to our children’s education in Brecon & Radnorshire. This is a cause I would like to champion as your local MP and I am encouraged that many community groups are getting together and backing their local schools. Together, I believe we can save our schools and ensure every child in Brecon & Radnorshire receives the opportunity of the best start in life. That’s all for now. Further updates can be found on my website: www.chrisdavies.org.uk and, if there are any issues I can raise for you, please get in touch by e-mail on chris.davies.mp@parliament.uk or write to me at 4a Lion Yard, Brecon LD3 7BA. I wish you all a lovely summer.

Gardening Column

HYDRANGEA Hydrangeas are popular, hardy garden shrubs highly valued for their late summer flowers in shades of pink, white or blue. The best known are the mophead and lacecap hydrangeas with their large, showy flower heads which persist for many months and may even be dried for winter decoration indoors. Other hydrangeas such as the paniculata cultivars bear large, cone shaped flowers in white or pink while others such as the oak leaved hydrangea have interesting leaf shapes and good autumn colour. Hydrangeas thrive in a moist but well drained soil in a cool semi-shaded part of the garden. Blue hydrangeas require an acid soil or ericaceous compost otherwise the colour will fade to a murky pink. Before planting work plenty of organic matter into the soil and after planting and in subsequent years apply more organic matter as a mulch. This could be well rotted manure, leaf mould, garden compost or composted bark. Hydrangeas also benefit from a feed such as blood, fish and bone or a rose fertiliser each spring. Flower heads on the mopheads and lacecaps are best left on the plants over winter to help protect the buds below and then removed with about 6 inches (15cm) of stem in the spring. If shrubs have outgrown their positions they can be pruned hard in spring but this will result in few flowers until the following year. The hydrangea paniculata cultivars require hard pruning each spring in order to encourage them to flower well. In addition to the shrubby hydrangeas there are also some climbing hydrangeas, one of which is evergreen, which do particularly well on north facing walls or fences where other climbers struggle to perform well. Hydrangeas in all of their forms are therefore excellent garden plants and thoroughly deserve their popularity amongst gardeners.

The Italian Supper Do you yearn for the days of our all sitting around a table, taking TIME to eat together, the kids discussing their day with you, taking an interest in each other, appreciating the meal laid out in front of you – ideally the kids having LAID the table first?! Perhaps saying grace is a step too far, but certainly thanking the cook before leaving the table? Me too! We often write about WHAT to eat, how much of it TO eat and think to the end result of eating the right things, but it’s also good to focus on HOW we do it! Being mindful is massively important, and as we come to realise that the days of meat and two veg were actually not too far off the mark, it is also good to revisit how we used to behave around a table. Certainly in my own nutritional group we pay heed to this – and it leads to some lively discussion! I call this session the Italian Supper as I still think of Italy as having great food but it also conjures up images of a Mamma serving big salads, fish and oils and the entire

family taking ages to break the bread and get through it over laughter and pleasure. We look to our own families and how we might improve our lot – even the lighting, background noise, engendering manners, who lays the table, right down to the nitty gritty of comfort (the furniture), presentation of the food, and how the kids can contribute (kids will always eat more receptively if they’ve prepped it) - and tricks to make it taste better than it actually is (we all need these on some nights right?!). For example heavy, good quality cutlery raises our expectations before we even take a bite – we anticipate better quality so our taste buds respond accordingly. It’s the same with a good quality wine glass. If it’s refined so the wine will taste! A red plate is a good way to lose weight as we associate it with a primitive danger signal so think more about the contents on it. Turn off the TV and you’ll start to tune into cues as to when you’ve had enough more efficiently – not to mention allow the conversation to flow. But if you

like a little background noise classical music – if it’s up your street - will literally make the meal classier! If you really want to get into ‘gastrophysics’ (and many top chefs are, as they seek the profit margins to match!), high pitched music adds sweetness to a meal, whereas brassy sounds make food taste bitter! For the majority of us – let’s maybe focus on getting around a table again, turning the telly off and finding out about each other’s day! Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Local Talent: Seren Bell Type of Artist? My work is mostly concerned with animals particularly the rich variety of breeds of sheep we have in Wales and the beautiful landscape of the Wye valley. I produce drawings in pen, ink and crayon. Range of Products? Apart from the original drawings which I sell, there is a range of cards produced by John Austin. Where can your products be purchased? My pictures can be seen on my website www.serenbell. co.uk and can be purchased at Forge Gallery in Hay on Wye, Fosse Gallery, Stow on the Wold, Langham Gallery London, Old Chapel Gallery Pembridge and Fountain Fine Art Llandeilo.

at the local shows and sales, and not forgetting my favourite flock of Hill Farm Romneys in Llanigon! What advice would you give a local artist? My advice would be just to be yourself and most importantly enjoy looking. What other local artists do you admire? There are so many hugely talented artists in this area it’s hard to choose. Artist statement: We are all so fortunate to be living in such a stunning place and it’s while walking my dogs every day in this lovely wooded landscape, with the Black Mountains as a backdrop, that I draw much of my inspiration.

Price range? Prices range from £250 to £1500. How long have you been an artist? I have been drawing all my life though it is only now since I retired that I am lucky enough to be able to devote all my time to my art.

David Newell

Bespoke Joinery and Furniture

Where did you train or gain experience? I did a joint Fine Art and English degree at Exeter University. What has been your proudest moment? It always feels really good when someone likes a picture enough to buy it, but I was particularly thrilled when Prince Charles bought two works of mine at the Brecon Cathedral Exhibition in 2012. What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I like to think I haven’t achieved my masterpiece yet! Have you any future plans for your work? For the moment I am doing some drawings for a gallery in Maine and then I shall be busy getting together an exhibition in the Fosse gallery next March. I still love drawing sheep so I shall continue to look for material

Get to really know... Name: Phil Swaine. Place of birth? RAF Wroughton, Wiltshire, though not on the runway - Dad was in the Air Force. Where do you live now? Talgarth. Marital status? Married to Jaye for 16 years. Occupation? Professional Handyman. Children? Stepson James, and two grandchildren Isabel (5) and Joe (3), and of course my late stepson, Simon, who’s always with us. Pets? Enzo, a seven year old wire-haired dachshund with nervous tendencies! Two lessons life has taught you? You only get one go at it, so follow your heart, and hold on to those who are close to you. What makes you grumpy? Where do I start? Lack of sleep, bad driving, timewasters, although I’m sure my wife could give you a much longer list! Teenage crush? I’m sorry to say, like most boys my age then, it was probably ‘Charlie’s Angels’ You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? The grandchildren, although the car needs replacing as well. Oh, and I’d probably spend some on my wife too (she’s just reminded me!) Have any bad habits? None that I’ll admit to in public. Which bad habits drive you crazy? I’m showing my age here, but I HATE the social media craze – put the phone down and get out and experience life first hand, not through someone else’s banalities. What book would you recommend to others? Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel – absolutely brilliant. Best present ever received? Hmmm, that could be controversial, but I love rock music (the louder the better) so I’d have to say the Denon music player my wife bought for my fiftieth – absolutely stunning sound, (even at full volume – ask the neighbours, they know!) List one thing you wish you could change about yourself? I really wish I could sing but I have a truly terrible voice. I was called a ‘fog-horn’ along with several other boys in primary school – not inspirational for a young child, and it’s obviously scarred me for the last forty-odd years! If you could visit anywhere in the world where would you go? I love wild, rugged places, so I’ve

always fancied New Zealand; I’d love to visit the US National parks, especially Utah (nearly went this year), and I’d love to go back to the Canadian Rockies. List five goals on your life’s to-do list? I’d like to learn to play the drums - I’ve always fancied myself as bit of a Neil Peart or a Ginger Baker ever since I was a teenager. I’d like to finish the books I haven’t started writing yet – that first sentence is always the hardest! I challenged myself to complete all the 800m+ mountains in the UK as a memorial to my stepson Simon, and so far I’ve nearly finished Wales, so I’ve got a long way to go yet! I’d like to try my hand at rally driving, and I’d love to follow the England cricket team on an overseas tour and watch every match (New Zealand would be good, although it’s a long way to go to watch them lose!). Name one regret you have? Losing my stepson Simon in a climbing accident 10 years ago. Name one thing you miss about being a kid? Not having to pay for anything! Name one thing you love about being an adult? The freedom to be yourself. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Curl up with my wife, a glass of wine or a beer, a good book, a crossword or a DVD boxset (after having moved the dog out of my seat on the sofa first). What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Sleep off one of Jenny’s roast dinners from the Three Horseshoes, Felindre! Or taking the dog for a lovely walk in or around the hills. Have any hidden talents? I’m still looking…. What would be your dream job? I’d love to jack it all in, buy a house by the sea and spend my time writing and taking photographs (and living off beans on toast ‘cos we couldn’t afford anything else!) If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to? Bond …… James Bond, what else? What have you done today to make you feel proud? I’ve actually done some work on our own house for a change – my wife will be soooo pleased! Sum yourself up in five words: Oh God, don’t tempt me (that was my wife’s contribution).

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Here we are in mid summer already. It seems only last week when we were worried about icy roads and the like. This time of year is so productive that it is impossible to enjoy everything to the full. The local vegetables are superb but don’t sell well because salads and light meals are more popular in the warmer weather. We are getting a steady flow of small surplus crops from private gardens coming in and we do our best always to take them. It helps if we know that something is coming in as then we don’t go and buy it in the wholesale market. Fruit is always popular in the summer; particularly in Hay where there are so many walkers who want just one or two of each item as they have to carry all their kit on their backs. As usual the local cherries have been superb but the season never lasts long. I have noticed that some of the ‘pick your own’ establishments have stopped and are selling just pre-picked fruit. I regret that this is due in part to customers taking advantage and not ‘playing the game’. Too much fruit is picked, examined and thrown on the floor only to be crushed under foot and eaten by the birds. Fruit should be examined before picking and if not good enough left on the plant to improve for tomorrow’s customer. This waste is putting up the price as if the grower needs £100 per ton and half the crop is wasted in this fashion he will have to charge £200 per ton. Coming into August we are getting well into bean time - a most beautiful vegetable - probably the most popular of them all. However they will not all get eaten in time so please make some green bean chutney, it’s a lovely thing to have in the winter months. Also make your own jams and preserves; that way you will know what is in the jar and there will be no artificial colourings, flavour enhancers and preservatives. Oh! and the taste will be better than the factory made ones! Also home-made preserves usually have a lot less sugar to fruit in them which is the next big campaign for public health. August is the main month for holidays so please enjoy your holidays and come back refreshed in September.

Jokes

by Father & Son

(Colan & James Badham) A child asked his father, “How were people born?” So his father said, “Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on.” The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, “We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now.” The child ran back to his father and said, “You lied to me!” His father replied, “No, your mum was talking about her side of the family.” Wife: “I look fat. Can you give me a compliment?” Husband: “You have perfect eyesight.”

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in August

Autumn Lady’s-tresses is another plant that gets a bit ahead of its name. Watch out for a tiny spike of white flowers (twisted into “tresses”) on closely grazed or mown grass – it does occur here occasionally and may be overlooked. Another of these is a local speciality – particularly in fields and verges above Hay and Llanigon where Autumn Crocus (neither autumn nor a crocus!) can be spectacular at the end of the month. Henallt Common is the best place to see it. Colchicum autumnale Common names of plants seem to wish to move the seasons forward. “Autumn Gentian” can often be found in August and we have populations of this on Gilwern Hill as well as the opposite end of the county at Allt Rhongyr (above Craig-y-Nos). Similarly “Summer Snowflake” flowers long before you could possibly call it summer...

Wedding Season

drinks and recipes

As a mobile bar company we get to attend a number of wedding parties and celebrations. So we thought it only fair to share some of our experience with you to help you deal with the impending wedding season:

bride and groom. Don’t try to be funny it should come naturally, don’t shoe horn jokes into a speech because it won’t seem natural. The best speeches are honest, witty and don’t last too long. For help with a speech contact www.bestmanbeacon.com

• Dress: Think practical, we see a number of female brides and guests who arrive in heels higher than the shard and find it problematic navigating across a damp marquee field or across bamboo matting. Always bring a jacket or shawl for evenings as even the nicest summers day it will cool off in the evening so try to go for practicality rather than all about style.

• Music: When people are mingling whilst having canapés or waiting to be seated always think about having some music to provide a good celebratory atmosphere. Also don’t forget to have a microphone and speakers handy to amplify your voice when giving a speech as there’s nothing more annoying for a guest then trying to hear a father of the bride address one hundred people from the back of the room.

• Speech: We must have listened to hundreds of different speeches given by a range of different associations to the bride and groom. Some have had us rolling with laughter, some have brought a tear to the eye and some….well have sent the room to sleep. Make sure you keep the speech short (no longer than 3-4 mins) make it personal to the

Boughrood Harness Races

Boughrood Court Farm will be the picturesque venue on Sunday 23rd August for their harness racing fixture. With over 130 horses attending from all over the UK the competition will be fierce. An addition to the fixture this year will be a specific race for lady drivers. Tasked with looking for new ideas the committee realised that the increase in numbers of lady drivers in the area had risen and felt it was a good idea to celebrate the fairer sex at the meeting. Sarah Allen from Staffordshire is the top lady driver in the area and has already notched up over 15 wins for the season. Sarah is the stable driver for Wellfield Stud who have a strong band of horses this year and together they are aiming to take the leading Owner, Trainer and Driver combination. The Boughrood Classic final will be the one everyone wants to win and with 5 competitive heats just qualifying for the £2000 final will be difficult. Come rain or shine on Sunday 23rd August @1.00 pm you will hear the commentator calling the horses home, and they hope to see you there!

Family Fun Fun for all the family is promised at the third annual Hay History Weekend, 11th-13th September. The theme is the Battle of Agincourt, since 2015 marks the 600th anniversary of the event and historical records suggest that some of the brave longbowsmen who fought and won came from this area. Some believe they even trained at Hay Castle! Set perfectly in and around Hay Castle, this Medieval themed weekend will offer a full programme of events. Working with The Cavalry of Heroes, activities will include real knights on horseback, sword fights and horse carriage rides around town. Plus participatory workshops and shows with Hay Youth & Senior Theatre Group, sword and shield decorating, wood turning, calligraphy and talks from the UK’s leading authorities on Agincourt and Medieval weapons; Anne Curry and Bob WoosnamSavage. Mill Garden July 4th and 5th saw Talgarth Mill gardens open through the National Gardens Scheme for the first time. A total of 110 visitors came through the Mill doors to look at the riverside gardens which have been enhanced by the purchase of an adjacent piece of land by The Green Valleys – leased to the Mill. This has made a productive garden, planted with soft fruit, native trees, perennials, herbs and beds showing the grains that are milled on site. A team of volunteers maintain the gardens. Liz Rose said ‘We were delighted with the number of visitors, and the money that we raised for such good causes. The feedback that we received was very positive and we would like to thank everyone who came to support us on our first time of opening for the National Gardens Scheme.’ Talgarth Mill Open Gardens raised £687 for NGS nursing and caring charities.

New Location

Eighteen Rabbit Fair Trade have hopped in to a bigger warren! Hay’s fair trade shop has moved to Lion Street after two and a half successful years at Hay Castle. The new location gives the ethical bunnies lots more space for more unusual and inspiring treats from around the world. Since they first opened their doors in November 2012, Eighteen Rabbit has established itself as a hidden gem on Hay’s retail map, offering unique gifts, clothes, jewellery and homeware, as well as their unbeatable Zotter chocolate. Now more Hay residents and visitors to the town will be able to pop in to see the fair trade goodies on offer. As part of the move, Louise and Andrew have researched some amazing new suppliers from across the globe, as well as expanding their ranges from existing projects. Some of the highlights you can expect to see include colourful satchels and messenger bags made from offcut leather in Rajasthan, safari animals carved from recycled flip flops which wash up on the beaches of Kenya, and fair trade, vegan and cruelty free skincare from Sudsatorium. The new location also includes a dedicated boutique for fair trade clothes, featuring exclusive lines from Mata Traders, Fabrica Social, No Nasties and Monkee Genes. You’ll also notice an expanding range of books and magazines which have already proved very popular in our town of books. Hay has just renewed its status as a fair trade town, and Eighteen Rabbit should fit in perfectly in their new, expanded shop on Lion Street. There’s never been a better opportunity to shop ethically and fairly.

Be Dog Smart In 2013 over 1000 children were hospitalised due to dog bites in the UK. Many of these bites were from dogs that were known to the children. This figure does not take into account the numbers who received fewer serious injuries. On the 19th August, the charity Dogstrust, in association with Hay Veterinary Group, is running a “Be Dog Smart” workshop at the practice. Designed for children in Key Stage 2 (8 – 11), the workshop will teach children how to be safe around dogs; how to approach them, how to handle them and what to do if they feel threatened by a dog. The workshop is free to attend, but places are limited so booking is essential. If you know a child who would like to attend, please call 01497 820863. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Get on it! Hay Ho! is a bus linking Hereford and Hay which runs every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday. In March 2014 local residents became aware that the existing Sunday bus service, the 39A, was under threat. A public meeting was held and the consensus was that good public transport connections are crucial - both for local residents and tourists - so a way had to be found to save the bus! To cut a long story short the first Hay Ho! bus rolled out of Hereford on 5th October 2014, and since then thousands of passengers’ journeys have been undertaken. This is all thanks to a great team of volunteers who have monitored and marketed the service and run a programme of walks and events to encourage bus use. Donations from the fantastic Hay Ho Supporters club have helped market the bus and have provided a fund to draw on should ticket revenues fail to cover costs. Happily the bus has been well received and feedback about the timetable, reliability and events programme has been positive. The steering group is now looking to the future. It is hoped that Hay Ho! can continue to run for another year. In 2014/15 the main users have been residents from Hay and visitors to Hay followed by users from the Golden Valley. Unsurprisingly, the busiest time so far has been Hay Festival week! If you have any feedback about Hay Ho! the bus team would love to hear from you. Please email bus39a@gmail.com or leave a comment on the Hay Ho! Facebook page. To really make Hay Ho! a success and ensure its viability the people of Hay need to get behind the bus – or better still, get on it! For example, if every local resident used the bus just once a year enough revenue would be generated to secure the service. There will be a working group meeting in the autumn so if you would like to get involved, do please get in touch, or why not become a supporter? Subscriptions cost just £5 (£20 for businesses) and you can sign up online at www.hayhobus.org.uk or send an email to bus39a@gmail.com. Supporter forms are also available from Hay TIB.

Have you heard of the Hay Ho! Bus? Running every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, Hay Ho! connects Hereford Rail Station and Hay via the Golden Valley. The service is run by and for the community so why not get on board? There are regular walks and events linking in with the bus. For details of upcoming events as well as timetable information please visit www.hayhobus.org.uk

“Hay at War 1914-1918” by Alan J. Nicholls One hundred years ago the world was embroiled in a conflict which would change the face of war forever. It was a war that affected every person in this country whether soldier or civilian, man or woman. Most families suffered the loss of, or injury to, a loved one. From the start of the Great War the people of Hay were caught up in the conflict across the globe. Whether serving on the front line, in allied occupations, or at home awaiting news from their loved ones, Hay was there. This account of the Great War is seen through the columns of the Brecon County Times. It deals with the news as seen weekly by the residents of Hay and it gives an insight to the everyday life in Hay during those war years. Most families of Hay are mentioned with accounts of the actions of combatants and civilians throughout the war. Many of those who survived the war returned home to Hay but their lives would never be the same again. Copies of the book are available on 2nd August at the Cheese Market in Hay where the parade begins to mark the 100 years of Hay Territorials deploying to Aden to fight the Turks. They are also available at Broad Street Book Centre or online from Lulu.com or Ebay.co.uk at £11.99.

News from...

We’ve come away excited and motivated to broaden our work, perhaps by working with neighbouring towns, other community groups and new overseas projects. If you’d like to get involved do get in touch!

Fairtrade Hay We’re just back from a fantastic weekend at the International Fair Trade Towns Conference in Bristol. We joined 240 delegates from 20 countries to discuss Fair Trade and to meet others working to promote Fair Trade in their towns. It was an inspiring event and was themed around ‘Fair Trade for Sustainability’. We heard from Fatima Ismael, from Fairtrade Co-operative Soppexcca in Nicaragua, about how climate change is reducing coffee yields and threatening the livelihoods of millions of farmers in developing countries. Harriet Lamb from Fairtrade International explained how Fairtrade is helping farmers to adapt and mitigate the effects of climate change. We’ll be helping the Fairtrade Foundation with their campaigning over the coming months to ensure that Fairtrade producers are considered in the development of the new Sustainable Development Goals, and in the climate talks in Paris.

This month we’ll have a stall at the butter market on 15th August, thanks to the Warren Trust. Come along to buy some Fairtrade delicacies and find out more about our work. We’re also planning a fashion show to encourage people to consider who made their clothes. This is will take place on 23rd October at the Globe. Search Fairtrade Hay on Facebook or visit fairtradehay.blogspot.co.uk for more updates. Gwernyfed High School Over the past year pupils in years 7-9 have been busy taking part in the South Powys Literacy Olympiads Competition, which involves them completing a variety of challenge tasks in different subjects. The standard of entries has been very high, so well done to all those who have participated. The year 7 competition was won by Roxanne Shaw who completed the Maths and Geography challenges, plus created an informative and engaging video of her travels to Africa at the beginning of the year. Praise must also go to Ceryl Phillips and Amelie Williams who also completed three tasks each to a high standard.

The winners went forward to the South Powys Competition against all the other local high schools. Roxanne Shaw successfully won the overall bronze award for the best year 7 entry across South Powys. Llongyfarchiadau Roxanne! Hay & District Dial-A-Ride It’s been business as usual over the early summer months, with Dial-a-Ride taking members on trips to Hergest Croft and Llangoed Hall. We are also looking forward to our first trips to Stockton Bury Gardens and Hampton Court. These trips are always popular and are open to our members only.

In year 8 the overall winner was Amy Argent who entered four challenges; Maths, MFL, History and Art. The standard of the work and her presentation was excellent. Praise also goes to Bailey Jones and Toby Millington for great entries from them too.

Apart from social trips, we also cover journeys to hospitals and health centres and did you know we can also collect prescriptions too? Our buses are fully accessible and wheelchair users and people with limited mobility are most welcome. Membership is ÂŁ10 per year with a small charge per journey. There are no age restrictions.

All participants receive certificates, and the 2 winners also win vouchers to spend as they wish.

We were sorry that Bobby Sanderson has retired after 11 years service. However, our new bus drivers

are settling in well and we are also pleased to have Devlin Price returning to drive for the Community Car Service again. We are always looking for more drivers and can accommodate as little as a few hours per month. If you’d like to spend a few hours out on the buses to see what it’s like to be one of our key volunteers, please phone us. Due to maternity leave, we have also have a rare vacancy in the office for a volunteer for one morning per week. It may not be paid work, but it’s interesting and very important, plus you get to work with our fabulous team of volunteers which is a definite perk! In the meantime we all wish Amye Farrington the best of luck with her maternity leave. With our service costing over £40,000 per year to run our fundraising team is always busy, and there are plans afoot for a Coffee Morning and Jumble Sales in September. We have also had a successful cake stall in the Co op over the Festival and received over £240 from the Festival Bookshop plastic bag fees. If you’d like to become a Friend of Dial-a-Ride to help with these events, give us a call.

Local non-profit groups can now join our Group Hire Scheme free of charge, with minibus bookings starting at £20. Beginning at 10.30am, we will be welcoming astronomer and tutor Dr. Martin Griffiths from the University of South Wales to talk on ‘The Consequences of Contact with Extraterrestrial Civilisations’. A well-known supporter of our Astronomy Group, he uses astronomy, history and science fiction to promote greater understanding of science, so we can expect to be challenged and stimulated - and perhaps learn more about the secrets of Pluto! Back down on Earth at 1.30pm, our Music-All Group will be exploring the work of composer
