Dorstone Dawdle have a 10K Multi-terrain Race and 4K Fun Run, turn to page 2. Tempo Events presents the Offa’s Dyke 15 Long Distance Cross Country Race, page 8. There’s no excuse for me now, I have beautiful images of the family, it’s time to get them printed with Old Forest Arts and displayed in the home for everyone to see. On pages 40 – 41 you will find the results to our recent Photography Competition. We were yet again stunned with the amount of high quality images sent in. We hope you are pleased with our choices. Our 2017 Local Landscapes Calendar is out now in tourist points; this is to entice our visitors back to this area in which we are all so lucky to live all year round. Last month Mr B and I returned to The Baskerville Arms, Clyro. Read more about our delicious food, minus the children, on page 33! Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Lisa Marie and Otis Badham

News from Glasbury Ward

SPEAK EASY

by County Councillor James Gibson-Watt The public consultation on Powys County Council ruling Cabinet’s proposal for the future of Gwernyfed and Brecon High Schools ended on the 1st June, but the debate continues. To me, the review process thus far has been a classic example of how best to destroy the public’s trust in local government. Consider this – Powys County Council had already decided to build five new primary schools in the Gwernyfed High School catchment area, at a cost of over £20 million of public money. Yet having decided that, secured the capital funding and issued a design and build contract for all five, it nevertheless proposed to close the very high school that the pupils from those schools are supposed feed in to! What’s more, of the four high schools in mid and south Powys currently under review, the only one the Cabinet has proposed closing, Gwernyfed, is the only one of the four currently operating within budget, producing very good results and not in schools’ inspectorate Estyn’s ‘special measures’ category.

If that were not bad enough, the Council has also proposed removing the Welsh medium stream from Brecon High School, even though the only Welsh medium primary school in the south of the county, Ysgol y Bannau, is located just across the road from Brecon High School. For some pupils attending Ysgol y Bannau, pursuing their secondary education through the medium of Welsh may, in future, be at a cost of travelling anything up to 50 miles there and back over the mountains to Builth Wells High School every day. If, dear reader, you were an alien visiting Powys from Mars to study how local government operates, you would think the council had taken leave of its senses. You would be right.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I sign off this month’s column, we are still basking in the success of the Fourth Talgarth Walking Festival earlier in May. The Walkers are Welcome Committee and everyone involved in the initiative can be justly proud of their achievements. As well as signalling the start of summer, the Walking Festival also plays a significant part in our town’s regeneration. Back in 2004, when I was first elected as your County Councillor, The Sunday Telegraph described Talgarth and its hinterland as ‘the undiscovered jewel of Britain’ – and quite a few thought at the time that our town was being ‘over egged.’ Well, some twelve years later, the sceptics have been proved wrong. Increasingly locals, visitors and those who chose to make their home here, appreciate more fully our beautiful environment, both built and natural. Events such as the Walking Festival, the Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains and many other community initiatives harness these assets for the benefit of our wider community. As Wye Local readers will know, the National Assembly for Wales election on Thursday, 5th May saw Kirsty Williams returned as our Constituency Assembly Member with a substantially increased majority. She and I are very grateful for the sterling level of support we received locally. Across the wider Mid and West Wales Region, however, as with all the other regions in Wales, support was not sufficient to entitle the Welsh Liberal Democrats to a Regional List Seat.Whilst I would have relished the opportunity to continue my work in the National Assembly, it has been an enormous privilege to serve as Assembly Member for Mid and West Wales since 2011 and for that I am hugely grateful. Throughout that time, serving the residents of this my home community has been paramount and in the time to come, that will remain the case. On Thursday, 23rd June, we the electors of Talgarth and across the UK will have the opportunity to have our say on our future membership of the European Union. I have never made a secret of my support for remaining within the EU, but I do not think this column is the appropriate vehicle for making that case. I regret some of the heated and intemperate remarks coming out of both the ‘Remain’ and ‘Leave’ camps over recent weeks. Whatever the outcome

of the Referendum, the wounds of this campaign between and within parties – and in some cases families – will take some time to heal. Given the sheer magnitude of the decision we are facing, far greater than in any single election, I very much hope that there will be a strong turnout to validate whatever the eventual result is. Staying with matters European, I have been really heartened by the growing success of our Pizzoferrato twinning link. It is tremendous to see the enthusiasm of the Talgarth - Pizzoferrato Youth Group and I am particularly looking forward to their event on Sunday, 19th June at 12.30pm in Talgarth Town Hall. I hope that people from all parts of our community will come along, to find out how to get involved. Last week saw the AGM of Talgarth Town Council and I was pleased to nominate Cllr Jacqui Wilding as Chair, in succession to Cllr Andy Lord. Andy has served with distinction over the past four years, in a challenging environment for all town and community councils. I have confidence in Jacqui’s ability to continue that work with energy and determination, and look forward to working alongside Cllr John Hopkins as Vice Chair. The TiRC AGM also fell last week, confirming the established team, but with Cllr Zoe Argent stepping up to the plate as Centre Coordinator. Again, I look forward to working with her and fellow volunteers to further develop the work of the TiRC in the weeks and months ahead. I hope to see you around at community events in the coming weeks, but in the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me, if you have any feedback or issues of concern on: 07703 112113, by email: william.powell@mwwlibdems.org.uk via Facebook or Twitter @WilliamPowell2016. Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Monday, 6th June from 5.00pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre - or just call in at the TiRC, if you need a visit at home. In any event, I look forward to seeing you soon. Best Wishes, William.

Newssfrom

Kirsty Williams The first think I’d like to say to everyone is a huge thank you! After the result in this constituency last year, this election was always going to be a tough fight for me. The Conservatives made it clear that Brecon and Radnorshire was one of their top target seats, so to win by over 8,000 votes is absolutely fantastic. I am humbled that so many people put their faith in me and I will work every day to repay that faith. Representing Brecon and Radnorshire in the Assembly has been one of my greatest privileges. This constituency has the most amazing people, people willing to stand up for their communities. I look forward to working with these communities over the coming months and years to protect our vital public services and to bring more – well paid jobs to the area.

My priorities are to save the schools at risk of closure and to get Brecon the new high School it needs; to improve and increase local health services including bringing chemotherapy to our community hospitals; better broadband and mobile phone services; and better support for our farmers with a dedicated uplands payments scheme. The National Assembly I have returned to is very different to the one I left in April. For the first time, we now have a group of UKIP members, who already have a new leader before we even started. It will be very interesting to see how they engage with the institution and its processes. It will also be a very different time for me personally. I am no longer the leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats so I will have a changed job and a changed focus, but, as has always been the case, my number one priority will be the people of Brecon and Radnorshire. So, if I can help you in any way, please get in touch.

Making a welcome return! The Offas Dyke 15 Long Distance Cross Country Race from Hay to Kington makes a welcome return to the events page this year, being part of Kington Festival again on 19th June. Originally established in 1977 for the celebrations for the Queens Silver Jubilee, it was held for 25 years, building up to over 800 runners at its peak. Sadly it had to stop because of the Foot and Mouth outbreak and thereafter it was difficult for the local team to get it going again. So after a break of 14 years it was re-introduced last year at the August Bank Holiday Weekend by Tempo Events, based in Stratford upon Avon, with the original Race Director, David Joyce, assisting with the arrangements. The satisfying result has given the organisers the confidence to bring it back to its original slot on Father’s Day, and offer this unique event to the modern day runner. The race is a tough one, involving 2,500 ft of climb and following the route of the Offas Dyke Long

Distance Footpath. The route takes the runners over Little Mountain, Disgwilfa and Hergest Ridge, where they might have enough time to take in the marvellous views! With the kind permission of the farmers and land owners, this difficult off-road race requires a large number of marshals. Help for this comes from members of the Hay Masonic Lodge, the Black Mountains Lions, the Hay Hotfooters, the Rhogoch YFC and the Kington Lions. Runners register for the event, and pick up their Timing Chip at the Cusop Village Hall, and then make their way to the Hay Town Clock for the start at 11am. Traffic comes to a standstill for a few moments before 11 and then they are off to the cheers of the spectators. The finish is on the Lady Hawkins’ School Playing Field, the first runners taking around 90 minutes to cross the finishing line. There are lots of spectator opportunities at the start, in the Villages of Newchurch and Gladestry and at the finish.

News from Chris Davies

Afternoon Tea at Penymaes

By Kind Permission of Shan Egerton

-Your local MP

As spring heads towards summer we are gearing up for our busiest time of year here in Brecon and Radnorshire. It is my favourite time of year too – show season and it is coming up fast. I look forward to seeing a great many of you enjoying the Royal Welsh, Brecon Show and many more shows across our area this year. This past month has seen a great deal of action too. I was humbled with the turnout and level of support for Gwernyfed and Brecon High Schools at the meetings to help save the schools. I have been working hard behind the scenes to do all I can to save our local schools and was proud that so many people turned out to tell Powys County Council not to close the door on our children’s education. Rest assured, I will do all I can to help keep our superb schools open. Another blight to our area recently has been cross border farm payments. While many of our farmers have now received their basic payment, too many are still yet to receive a penny. To help try to resolve the problem I have met with both Liz Truss, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and George Eustice, the farming minister, to raise individual cases with them. They have assured me that they are doing everything they can to expedite the process and get farmers paid as quickly as possible. Do get in touch if you are still having problems and I will do everything I can to help. Furthermore, if any of you have been paid over the last two months do please get in touch and I will register you so that this situation will hopefully not happen again next year. Finally, a massive congratulations to Rhosgoch Young Farmers on their tremendous recent fun ride. I had a fantastic day out with my family; my wife, Liz, even rode the course! A massive well done to all who helped organise the event and congratulations on raising over £2700 for the Young Farmers. That’s it for this month. If you would like to contact me you can do so on either chris.davies.mp@ parliament.uk or call 01982 559180; or if you see me out and about do stop and say hello!

flowers can be seen to range from yellow / white when first open to blue when fully mature. Look out for this one in wetter places – they occur near the Wye in Hay. The Water Forget-me-not is also common right by the Wye and other rivers and is the showiest of the species we have in our area. There are also two smaller species to be found in boggier places. The Wildlife Trust is busy with events in June with a “Party in the Park” at Craig-y-nos Country Park on the 1st followed by a walk at the same location on the 4th. Myosotis discolor Forget-me-nots will be flowering widely this month and most of those by the roadside will be common species like Field Forget-me-not. There are many more species to look out for including the Changing Forget-me-not pictured. This can be hard to spot and certainly repays close examination as the tiny

Connecting Carers to build support

Over 17,000 children, young people and adults in Powys are looking after someone close to them. That’s 1 person in every 8. Illness and disability can affect anyone and any family. 6th – 12th June is Carers Week, celebrating unpaid family Carers of all ages, and the incredible work they do in our communities. Local charity Powys Carers Service is asking everyone in Powys to do one thing …to Think Carer!

Think Carer! –Think about who you know who is caring for someone who for whatever reason needs extra help. It could be caring for a parent with Alzheimers, a partner with cancer, or a child with autism. It may be a child or young person caring for a parent with mental health problems or a sibling with disabilities. Think about these quiet heroes in our communities and what you could do to support them?

struggling with a child with behavioural problems.

We can all ask “how are you?”. We could all ask “can I help?” So please Think Carer! And when asking how are you, ask if they know that Powys Carers Service can help. Powys Carers Service – call 01597 823 800. For Carers Week this year, how many readers will ask those simple questions? And how many will find new friends in doing so? How much stronger our communities will be if we all care. See: www.powyscarers.org.uk or Facebook Powys Carers Service.

When asked what they can do to help most people think of practical jobs and errands. Help could be to simply understand the stress or restrictions someone else has in their life, to smile not frown at a parent

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer

As I write this ar ticle we are all gearing up for the festival. As you read it the festival will be nearly over and then we have summer - we hope! May has been a cold month and thus things have been slow to grow. even in Europe this is the case and I thought that everything in Europe was perfection - or is that the other way round? Being tired of the referendum mudslinging doesn’t help it to go away, I am often asked what difference it will make to my business and to fruit and vegetable selling in general. I think hardly any at all. For years European farmers have been dumping stuff on us when they have too much and then suddenly one crop finishes and the price rockets until the next one is up and running. So no, I don’t think the referendum will have much if any affect on food prices - after all, the farmers won’t take the huff if we vote to pull out - they still want to make a living just as our farmers do.

The problem is that there is little else that can be used in most recipes or drinks, I am seeing how I can make one lemon last a lot longer than I’ve bothered in the past! The one good thing at this time of year is the early morning drive - the day is at it’s best , I really recommend you to get up early and get out and enjoy it - not long till autumn and the darkness taking over again. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

We are now enjoying asparagus and strawberries grown locally and it won’t be so long before the local new potatoes are ready. Rhubarb is still good but it’s been around possibly too long to still tickle the taste buds. English peas put all the others into the shade and now depend on warm weather to get on. Imported produce is as important now as it is at any time of the year. Peaches and nectarines from firstly Spain and then southern France are improving - the first ones were too early and lacked the sun induced sweetness that we are used to. British orchard fruit is all over and we must use southern hemisphere apples and pears - they are good and are sent over by boat thus helping to avoid too much in the way of emissions. Apricots and plums will soon start although we will have to wait a long while before British plums are ready. Look out for early cherries towards the end of this month , but don’t be disappointed if you have to wait for July - pick them too soon and the flavour won’t be there. Our biggest problem at the moment is a shortage of lemons so the price is astronomic, this has a knock on effect with limes that have also gone very dear.

Somme 100 - a Commemoration The 1st July this year marks the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme in World War I, one of the most costly and futile of campaigns that has involved British soldiers in modern times; the first day alone saw 24,000 Allied soldiers killed. During the nine months of its duration the battle claimed the lives of 11 men who came from Hay and Cusop. To mark their sacrifice there will be a special service led by Father Richard Williams at St Mary’s Church, Hay-on-Wye, at 7pm on Friday 1st July. The Standards of the Hay branch of the Royal British Legion will be in attendance and the service will include a lone piper accompanying a wreath laying and a bugler will sound Last Post. The names of the 11 will be read out, as will a World War I poem. There will be a retiring collection for the church. Please make a date in your diary to help remember these men.

Women. When to stop. When to start! Women are very tuned in to the impact made over ‘our month’ in terms of sports performance, cravings for unhelpful foods and drinks, emotions, and creativity. But we can miss a lot of the signs too, and make things worse! Women runners - notice how some days your legs are like lead weights and you can’t get air into your lungs? I put that down to ‘off days’ but it’s often hormones. (unless you’ve slept badly or eat rubbish!).Train around your cycle and really boost your training, maximising on your peak cardio days, and honing other skills on the days it just aint there! (reducing injuries too). Remember this: even in our hunting era we didn’t chase boar every day! Indeed no rest will AFFECT your hormones:A few months ago I was working (nutritionally), with a top sports competitor. She was training up to 6 hours a day.To watch her row, was poetry in motion. So elegant you couldn’t believe she was really working (until you saw the stats!). But when I measured her bone mass - really low. Alarmed, I had a chat with her and it evolved she’d had NO REAL REST for many months and had amenorrhoea (no periods), for a year. This over-training led to low oestrogen levels - had stopped her periods

and affected her bone density. (Solution: increasing caloric intake, reducing exercise duration and intensity, and taking at least ONE day off entirely per week). Back to us: On the last day of your period and the next 7-10 days (oestrogen rising), your body finds tough exercise easier, and mentally stimulation is at peak, (so try that NEW Zumba class – your brain will cope!) Mid-month (Ovulation) your energy will be sky high – time your races for now! You’ll be full of serotonin so group exercise will feel great as you’re on a natural high and feeling sociable! In the two weeks til your period, energy levels will start to drop. Cravings may appear (your diet needs B vits, calcium, magnesium, and cruciferous vegetables to help with this –ask for my Cravings fact sheet mizzfit@mail.com). Pre-menstrually, you may feel somewhat sluggish so switch to Yoga, walking, Pilates or weights. Never panic about losing your cardio fitness levels a few days off won’t harm (and may well benefit). Start to ramp up the intensity as your energy returns. Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Local Talent Name: Lynn Kay. Type of Musician? Community musician specializing in drumming. Tell us a bit about what you do: I take drums and other instruments to groups of people and lead them in group activities. It is all about communicating, growing in confidence and having fun. Which instruments do you play? Lots of percussion, African and Brazilian. Also cello. At school I played the bassoon and regret giving it up. I can ‘get by’ on lots of instruments. When and why did you start playing? I started playing the recorder at primary school with the terrifying Mrs Morris who used to take her poodle into school. When I was 10 went to play at a massed schools’ concert in Civic Hall in Birmingham and that is when I knew what I wanted to do in my life. How long have you been a musician? When I was 12 I started playing the cello. I have been running Beat It Percussion for the last 5 years.

it was wonderful until I took it to school and the other girls made fun of it because it was not wooden. I now have a house literally full of all sorts of instruments. Have you been in competitions? Won Any prizes? In March 2016, winning the Big Lottery People’s Project after a TV and media campaign for public votes. This means that I can create new opportunities for people who are living with Dementia and their carers to come and share music-making in my new Drumming Together for Dementia Programme. What advice would you give a local musicians? If the opportunity you want doesn’t exist, create that opportunity for yourself. What advice would you give to beginners? Find people to play music with. Have you any future plans for your work? I am passionate about my work with people who have dementia. I plan to continue developing my Drumming Together for Dementia project so that it can be available to many people over a wide area.

Where did you train or gain experience? I trained at (what is now) the University of Huddersfield, but my real learning has been with the community groups and individuals that I have worked with over the years. The late John Morton of Brecon was hugely helpful both in practical ways and in helping me gain confidence. What has been your proudest musical moment? Playing for the Queen at her Jubilee Celebrations at Crickhowell in 2012, in a Samba band led by my son. Do you teach music? Rather than a teacher I see myself as a facilitator. I don’t teach music formally but give people the opportunity to play with music so that they experience first-hand the benefits music offers. What’s your favourite thing about what you do? Seeing the change in people from ‘I can’t do this’ to ‘I actually did that!’, and being part of that process. Which famous musicians do you admire? Why? In the classical world, Mstislav Rostropovich. I wish I could have met him. My musical hero is producer and artist Lee Scratch Perry, an eccentric genius. Describe your first instrument. Other instruments: My first instrument was a silver plastic recorder. I thought

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A cat, they have a lovely life, lots of sleeping interspersed with hunting. They are very independent but usually adored by their owners. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Flying. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? Either the book I have just been reading, or the events of the day. Do you believe in ghosts? No, but as Hamlet says, there are more things in heaven and earth than we know what of. Most exciting thing you’ve won? The only time I have ever won anything, it was a huge cake. Two lessons life has taught you? You never know what might happen next, and always be positive.

List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: My addictive tendencies. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Bhutan. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Learn to play the ukele, go to London more frequently, spend more time with my grandchildren, write a novel, master a foreign language (not just functional stumbling). Name one regret you have: That I did not have more children. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: The endlessness of days. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Freedom. What’s your favourite song of all time? Sitting on the Dock of the Bay by Otis Redding or Tower of Song by Leonard Cohen. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Used to be dancing but now it tends to be on the sofa watching Netflix and having a cuddle. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Going for a long walk. What would be your dream job? Melvyn Bragg presenting Arts programmes. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to? I did change my surname, after a divorce 30 odd years ago to Eliot, after George and T.S.

What makes you grumpy? Very little, I have an annoyingly sunny disposition.

What have you done today to make you feel proud? Planted out 2 trays of sturdy seedlings and mowed the lawn.

Teenage crush? Oh the shame of it, Cliff Richard, but then when I was 14, I switched to Mick Jagger.

Sum yourself up in five words: Energetic, organised, friendly, political, lively.

REVIEW

Last month we were invited to The Baskerville Arms, Clyro by the very charming Percy Haynes. This November Wye Local will meet its 10 year milestone. With ‘The Baskie’ being our first ever restaurant review, it felt fitting for Mr B and I to go along. On arrival we were greeted by a very smiley Emma behind the bar. Mr B was the driver so he opted for a orange juice and lemonade. I had pleasure in ordering a medium glass of house Rosé. Both very refreshing in our recent sunny weather. We sat near the fireplace whilst we looked over the menu. For starters I chose ‘baked camembert, ideal for two, served with warm Breads, salad garnish and a Red Onion chutney’. Mr B went for the ‘smoked Salmon salad served with dill sauce and walnut bread and butter’. My dish was indeed for two, I over indulged and Mr B was also keen to try. Both dishes very delicious. At this point we ordered a couple more drinks. Mr B tried a non-alcholic ginger beer. For mains I ordered ‘twice roasted belly pork served on mashed Potato with a cider, sage and dijon mustard sauce’. Firstly I must mention the crackling - wow, it really was superb - crunchy and flavoursome. The pork pulled apart perfectly and when teamed up with the mash, veg and sauce it was bursting with flavours. Mr B opted for ‘locally sourced ‘sirloin steak (10oz) served with grill garnish and chips’, with ‘stilton sauce’ as an extra. The meat was marvellously cooked, medium–rare, I can never get it right at home! It came with oven baked mushroom and tomatoes. The onion rings were plentiful alongside a nice helping of chips.

A bit of a break before our deserts came to the table. Mr B and I were bursting. My ‘warm chocolate brownie with raspberry sorbet’ - the brownie was divine, topped up with the sorbet gave it a refreshing twist. I could have predicted Mr B’s choice, ‘vanilla cheesecake’. Heavenly texture, went down a treat. Officially stuffed. But boy oh boy it was a superb meal. With two young children we don’t often get the chance to sit down and eat hot food, together! The atmosphere in the Baskerville Arms is very much to our liking. The large bar area means you can enjoy a meal as a couple, group, etc … but still be close enough to the bar should you wish to chat to the various friendly locals. To end our evening I enjoyed a latte, the coffee beans by local company Black Mountain Roast Ltd – exquisite taste. And Mr B polished off his ginger beer whilst we both sat talking to friends and family at the bar. Starters start from £3.95, mains from £8.95, sweets from £2.95. The Baskerville Arms also run Fish & Chips Lunchtimes on Fridays, Steak Nights during the month, plus various other themed evenings – take a look at their advert opposite. Thank you to Percy, Emma and our young waiter for the evening for a most splendid night. It’s made Mr B and I realise we need to do it more often. And if we can’t get out, we must order their take out pizzas – they looked top notch. Lisa Marie and Colan Badham x

Flower pressing We had this primula in the shop in Spring, it was so pretty with painterly petals and bright yellow centre, I just had to capture it somehow. It prompted me to have a go at flower pressing, an age-old pursuit currently enjoying a resurgence. You have to pick the flowers on a dry day and after the morning dew. You can press almost anything, but the flatter the petals are the more likely they are to dry quickly and therefore keep their colour. Select your flower heads, put them in between 2 pieces of blotting paper or tissue paper, I used a fairly thick white tissue. Select a very heavy book (I used The Complete Works of Shakespeare) although any weighty book will do. I then put a couple more books on top and waited 2 weeks. These are the results which I used on my ‘Flower Garden Bath Melts’ I used primula blue zebra, dark pink verbena, yellow daisy & viola. Leaves and grasses, complemented with pressed flowers can be used to decorate notebooks, handmade cards, bookmarks, découpage or framed. Article by Jacqueline Kennett.

THE ROSE Since before Roman times gardeners have revered the rose as the queen of flowering plants for the extraordinary beauty and scent of its blooms. The rose family offers an enormous range of colour, shape and perfume from the simple purity of the wild dog rose, the soft, pastel charm of the old garden rose or the jewel-like brilliance of the modern hybrids. Whether grown alone in the splendour of a formal garden or enhancing the quality of a mixed planting it is hard to imagine a garden without roses heightening the glory of a summer’s day. There literally is a rose for every part of the garden ranging from the low growing ground cover and patio roses, through the larger bush and shrub roses to the climbers and ramblers for growing up walls, arches, pergolas and even through trees. They all generally prefer an open, sunny site and a fertile soil. When planting, and each year as a surface mulch, it is important to add organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure. For your roses to perform at their best, it is also vital to feed them, preferably twice a year in April and June, with a special rose fertilizer. This done they will reward you with beautiful flowers from June to well into the autumn year after year. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham)

Assistant: “Thank you so much sir! I knew you would be understanding.”

Little Susie, a six-year-old, complained, “Mother, I’ve got a stomach ache.” “That’s because your stomach is empty,” the mother replied. “You would feel better if you had something in it.”That afternoon, her father came complaining that he had a severe headache all day. Susie perked up, “That’s because it’s empty,” she said. “You’d feel better if you had something in it.”

t the pearly gates, St Peter met with three new arrivals. “What car did you drive?” He asks them. The first replied, “A Mitsubishi”, and St Peter said, “I’m sorry - it’s down to the other place for you”. The second replied, “An Audi”, and St Peter said, “Sorry, you don’t get in either - down you go!”. The third man looks very uncomfortable and says, “I drove a Landrover”. St Peter says nothing, but pushes open the gates. “I don’t understand” says the third man, “Why?”. St Peter smiles gently “you’ve been through hell already!”

Methodist Chapel Although the Sun Inn at 4 Brecon Road, Hay, was described as being a cider house prior to 1776 no evidence of this has been found, the earliest certain record being in 1871 when it was described as a beer house run by Edward Evans who was also a quarryman and, by 1881, a general labourer and innkeeper. Although it is claimed that it was at number 3 Brecon Road, both directory and census evidence place it at number 4. The licensing records from the 1870’s show that the licensee and owner was Lewis Havard of Ystragynlais. By 1891 the Sun Inn was being run by John Powell, a local man, and he was succeeded by his widow Jane. The 1901 census is a little unclear but seems to indicate that she may have moved to number 3 which is consistent with Fairs statement that the New Sun Inn was adjacent to the Sun Inn. The inn closed soon afterwards and when the chapel adjoining the former Sun Inn was reconstructed the two properties were made into one. The Weslyan Methodist Chapel was on the site of what is now 4 Brecon Road, on corner of St Mary’s Road, and was first used in 1769. On 16 July 1793 was the first mention of the building being registered as a chapel: “ordered that the building called the chapel near the turnpike at the town of Hay be registered as a proper place for Dissenters to assemble for Divine Worship”. It was extensively converted within living memory from a carpenters shop. Previously it had one floor only. John Wesley preached in this chapel on a number of occasions as mentioned in his diary. The above is an excerpt from the Historical Directory of Rural Hay which will soon be published by Alan Nicholls to complement the earlier Historical Directory of Hay on Wye. It will give the history of all the properties in Brecon Road, St Mary’s Road, and all the farms in the parish. Alan Nicholls. Chair. Hay History Group

News from... Bronllys Hospital League of Friends Well Being Park in the grounds of Bronllys Hospital has got help from the Community Land Trust! In February the Bronllys Well Being Park Steering Group hosted a Study Day at Bronllys Hospital to look at the proposals for the 60 plus acres of grounds. Instead of mass housebuilding the group came up with “Bronllys Park”, a Well Being Park with the Community Hospital at the heart of it. Using landscaping to retain its beauty, discreet homes, care and sport facilities will be there to meet local needs, e.g. A Rural Day Centre and Bron Home offering 20 places to people with Dementia, a Solar Recharging Hub for Community Transport and much more. The Study Day led by Ian Crawley Technical Advisor from the Community Land Trust Network was attended by all the key stakeholders. The resulting report recommended that the Bronllys Well Being Park Community Land Trust be launched if the

Steering Group gained the formal support of local Councils i.e. Bronllys, Talgarth and Hay. In April all three Councils offered their support to the Bronllys Well Being CLT and to its public launch meetings in June. The meetings will be held on the following evenings at 7pm:- Thursday 9th June in Talgarth Town Hall, Monday 13th June in Hay School and on Tuesday 14th June in the Royston Hall Bronllys. The Steering Group is hoping that the meeting is attended by all who support the Well Being Park with Bronllys Hospital at its heart. Fairtrade Hay Fairtrade Hay have lots of tasks lined up to make Hay an even bigger and better supporter of Fairtrade. We’re planning to update our directory so will be on a mission to check what Fairtrade items are being sold in Hay, and hoping to inspire those not yet selling Fairtrade products to do so. By the time this is published we’ll have spent a day at Montpelier Cottage open gardens selling Fairtrade tea and coffee. It’s always a lovely event, and another chance for us to explain the benefits of Fairtrade.

We travelled on the Brecon Mountain Railway from Pant to Torpantau, calling at Ponsticill station for coffee and a visit to the museum. After lunch at Pant, we continued by coach to Merthyr Tydfil, where we enjoyed a little

retail therapy. On Wednesday 27th April at our monthly club meeting we were entertained by Mr John Parry from Bronllys. He recited humorous tales and monologues, some of which were written by himself. Members of the audience were amazed by his wonderful memory. This was followed by tea and biscuits and a raffle. Our next club meeting is on Wednesday 22nd June when we will have a talk on the use and importance of a defibrillator. As always, held at Glasbury Village Hall 2.30 - 4.30p.m. Tea and biscuits and Raffle later. Small items donated towards the prizes always appreciated. Guests welcome.
