News from Glasbury Ward by County Councillor James Gibson-Watt The 36th Three Cocks Vintage Society Rally, of which I have the privilege of being President, took place in the middle of August as usual, at Boatside, between Clyro and Hay-on-Wye. Blessed with almost perfect weather, it was a fantastic success with a near-record number of visitors. As an example of what can be achieved, over several decades, by local people working together for the common good it can’t be beaten. The Rally and the Society, whose members work entirely voluntarily over many months in the run-up to the show, are a timely reminder of the

importance of communities in this troubled world. How lucky we are to live in one that can and does produce such a memorable event; and then benefits local good causes with any surplus money raised. The Vintage Rally is just one of the many local events held across this area throughout the summer,

all of which, up to and including the Royal Welsh Show, depend entirely on the efforts of an army of volunteers, committee members and others, for their existence. These events and those who make them possible are a very welcome antidote to the divisions that this summer’s EU referendum appears to have exposed in parts of the UK, with sometimes ugly results. Feelings about that referendum are still running strong, even at our local level. But, as this summer’s shows have demonstrated, the cohesion that underpins our local communities transcends even changes as momentous as that. Thank

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s column, the Rio Olympics are dominating the airwaves, culminating in ‘Super Saturday’ this past weekend. Whilst it is fair to say that enthusiasm was slower to build for these Olympics than was the case for London 2012, there is no doubt that, as we enter the second week, we have reached something close to fever pitch. No one could fail to admire and respect Mo Farah, Jessica Ennis-Hill and Greg Rutherford for their spirited defence of their London gold medal titles. However, my own favourite moment from Rio has to be the joy on the face of cyclist Becky James from Abergavenny, as she claimed her silver medals for her performance in the keirin and sprint finals. Becky is inspirational in so many ways, having overcome several serious health setbacks to secure her place on the podium. I was delighted for her and her family, including her father, David James, who is a good friend of mine and a dedicated campaigner for affordable housing in our rural area. And as we look ahead to the Rio Paralympics, I am sure that all of us are rooting for Rob Davies, grandson of Austin and Polly Davies of Woodlands Avenue, as the World No 1 bids for medal glory in his table tennis class. However things turn out, we in Talgarth will be saluting Rob for his sheer determination and skill. Staying with the theme of sport, this summer has seen one of the most remarkable occasions locally, set in the context of Talgarth & District Regeneration Group’s Talgarth Sports. The football friendly between Talgarth Town FC and the visiting Unity in Diversity team of refugees based in Swansea was one of the most rewarding events that I have attended in recent years. The partnership of Talgarth Town on the field and Gwernyfed RFC hosting
the refreshments at the Malthouse, prepared by an army of local volunteers from the Hay Brecon Talgarth Sanctuary 4 Refugees (HBTS4R) group was sportsmanship and human decency in action. Equally heartening was the good natured atmosphere at King George V playing fields, with supporters of both teams cheering, laughing and joking. I was more proud than ever of our community that day. I continue to work with Talgarth Regeneration Group, the Town Council, Kirsty Williams AM and other local campaigners to oppose the proposed changes at Talgarth Post Office and at the time of writing, a meeting with senior executives of the Post Office and Co-op is in the offing. On another front, we have a local win, with the Royal Mail team arriving last weekend, to replace its post box in Westfields that had been much missed by residents and businesses over the last couple of months. I am grateful to several in the neighbourhood who brought it to my attention early, and helped to campaign for its return. I look forward to seeing many of you at local community events, such as Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains over the August Bank Holiday weekend. With Talgarth Sports, Talgarth Festival and other community events, we are fortunate in having such a strong tradition of volunteering locally – and I would once again like to register my appreciation. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any feedback or issues of concern on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, via Facebook or Twitter @WmPowell2016. Alternatively, you can come along to my next advice surgery on Friday 2nd September from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information & Resource Centre. In any event, I hope to see you soon. Best wishes William

Kirsty Williams One of the issues that comes up most frequently in my office postbag and at constituency surgeries is broadband. We are living in the digital age. People and businesses need access to high quality broadband for a huge number of reasons. Banks are closing their branches saying we can use their services online, agricultural forms must be submitted digitally, some prescriptions need to be renewed online and our children are told to research their homework on the internet; to name but a few. So it is absolutely vital that rural areas have the same access to fast, consistent, reliable broadband as urban areas. Yet, sadly, this is often not the case. I have previously been highly critical of the speed of the roll-out of Superfast Cymru. I will continue to push BT to make that roll-out quicker and with far clearer information to residents about when they can expect to be connected. For those really struggling with low speeds you may be able to get help via the Welsh Government’s “Access Broadband Cymru scheme”. This scheme provides grants of up to £800 to fund (or part-fund) the installation costs of new broadband connections for homes and businesses across Wales. I will be holding a meeting in the constituency with the Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Infrastructure, Ken Skates, at the end of September. I want residents to come along to share their experiences and to explain to the Cabinet Secretary the impact poor broadband has on the lives of people in rural areas. If you would like to come along to that meeting, please get in touch with my office for more details. You can contact me on 01874 625699 or if your internet allows, send an email to: Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

The Thoughts of a Greengrocer Here we are in the middle of August and the year two thirds gone. It’s been a funny year with some successes and some unexpected failures in the fruit and veg world. I think the biggest disappointment is the strawberry crop. They will not keep once picked – they’ve always been tender, I know, but this year it is most noticeable. Further, I am informed by regular jam makers that the pectin is far too low and the skins very tough, so probably the fruit should be cooked through before any sugar is added. Against this we have the early plums (Opals) which are wonderful and bode well for the damsons, greengages and Victoria plums. The other day I was offered some unusual apples (still very early in the year) if we got round and picked them. We got some funny looks from passers-by but they probably decided that I was a bit old for scrumping! They are a lovely old apple, the Peasbody Nonsuch, which is dual purpose although I think probably better at cooking when a little sugar can be added to take off the sharpness. Only yesterday the first proper eating apples arrived from Kent – the ever popular Discovery – and these have flown out.

Fresh fruit and vegetables, quality wines and local jams and preserves
Vegetables are doing well with lots of beans. The broad beans are pretty well over unless you can find the modern equivalent of the old fashioned scullery maid who can sit and peel each bean either before or after cooking. The French beans will soon be over leaving just the runners which I think are the favourite – if you have too many Green Bean Chutney is delicious! There has been a problem with cabbages, particularly Hispi which have been badly affected by cabbage moth which arrived too late to be sprayed and so has filled the cabbage with holes. Potatoes are still high priced and there are no old crop left. This means that for chipping and roasting one has to use a Maris Piper or similar and scrape them. Until the skin has firmed up and the starch balance corrected itself frying potatoes will not be easy, but it shouldn’t be long now. Article supplied by Stuart Pritchard

Top Tips for adherence! I’ve done almost 1300 Induction Consultations now at the Club. We’ll do static tests (Blood Pressure, Weight, Body Fat measurements etc), and also ask about a potential client’s health; past and current, and more. But the most important Induction question is: WHY do you want to join Gym & Tonic? The unequivocal TOP answer to that will be threefold: ‘To get fit, Lose weight and TONE’! And there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this in itself but it’s meaningless. (More in a moment). The other question is:What is most likely to get in the way of your being the regular to the Club that you intend to be. And the top answer there is ‘FINDING TIME’.Top tips for making the transition from your best INTENTIONS to actually achieving what you came to me for in the first place: Let’s break down the REASONS you came in. ‘1. Getting fit, 2. Losing weight, and 3.Toning’ – these always sound to me like what you SHOULD be doing. Like a prescription. There’s no cognitive connection to your real desires. If I feel the client is saying this by rote, I’ll ask them to do the following exercise and it works every time (usually done in their own time): Make three columns with each reason at the top. Then under each write WHY you want
it, then do that again, going ‘down a layer’ every time. It’s important to move forwards positively as opposed to backwards negatively. After a few more tries you reach the EMOTIONAL reasons for your being there, which is SUPER POWERFUL in comparison! Example: I want to lose weight. Why, mainly? Because I want to look better. Why? Because that’s important to me. Why? It gives me confidence (we’re getting there) Why? Confidence means I can perform better at work, ask for a pay rise, and shine socially. Ha! Now we’re reaching concrete, emotive reasons that will really help my client to adhere, stay focused and not miss sessions. As to the second part of my questions (What will get in the way of your getting to the Club?). I ask my client to ascertain the MINIMUM amount of times they will make it in each week. If they were to say 5 I’d say reconsider? Many will INTEND to make it to 5 and when they fail (Which is inevitable) they see themselves as having ‘blown it’ and give up! FAR BETTER to say 1 or 2 and make it to those few, come hell or high water! (more is then a bonus!). Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Local Talent: Chris Williams of The Attix
Chris Williams, aka The Attix, is an 18-year-old local singer/songwriter and works in Hay’s very own mobile phone store, CommuniKate. The Attix came to life as an outlet for Chris’s acoustic driven Pop/ Rock songs. Chris fuses bittersweet pop melodies with driving guitars to create songs that empathise and connect with the youth of today. He has so far played at the Cork Music Festival week, the Acoustic Festival of Britain and Weyfest. This year, with his band behind him, he is drawing big crowds and selling out venues across the South West. In addition he has just released his single ‘You’re My Addiction’ which has seen him selected as BBC Wales Artist of the week and has received airplay on major radio stations including Planet Rock, RadioX and Amazing radio. Artist name? Chris Williams aka The Attix. Type of artist? Singer/songwriter. Range of instruments? Vocals and guitar. Where can your products be purchased? iTunes. How long have you been an artist? 10 years. Where did you train or gain experience? Selftaught. What has been your proudest moment? In the last year working with Greg Haver – The Manics and
Super Furry Animals producer (originally from Hay, but now living in New Zealand). What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? ‘Like A Stone’ and my new single which was released on 5th August, ‘You’re My Addiction’. Have you any future plans for your work? Play Fuel Rock Club in Cardiff and I’m doing a UK tour in October. What advice would you give a local artist? Never give up...and dream big! What other local artists do you admire? Greg Haver. Artist statement: My music seems to be gaining momentum, having originally opened the Acoustic Festival of Britain at 14 and more recently playing the O2 in Liverpool and now with a UK Tour planned for October. Working with Hay’s very own world class producer Greg Haver and only turning

What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? An evening spent with friends mocking each other down the pub. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? A lazy Sunday lunch with friends at the Blue Boar. Have any hidden talents? Problem solving, useful when it comes to selling houses. What would be your dream job? Working for Holters, or in fact anything property related, I would love to be a judge on George Clark’s Shed of the Year. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to? I have retained the nickname Rodge from school so I guess it would be that! Lots of people think that’s my name anyway. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Showed a couple around their dream barn conversion, I am awaiting their offer! Sum yourself up in five words: Friendly, calm, busy, caring and importantly happy.

The Chrysanthemum is a welcome late summer and autumn showing plant perfect for beds and borders. ‘Pot Mums’ are a popular variety of the chrysanthemum which are perfect for pots and planters. The flowers produced also have the added benefit of providing perfect cutting material for floral arrangements. Plant your pot mum in a sunny location but not direct sunlight if possible, this may fade the blooms. Fertilizing your plant just before it blooms will encourage the plant to grow the best flower heads possible. Remember to remove any spent flower

Celebrating applied arts in Erwood The Lion Street Gallery, in Hay-on-Wye, is now well established and in its fifth year of business. Brent Blair, the owner and a practising artist, is proud to report that the gallery was recently rated by Culture Trip as one of the best galleries in Wales. Since opening, they have gone from strength to strength, focusing predominantly on artists working in Wales and the borders. The current exhibition, until the end of September, is a large mixed show of 25 artists using a whole range of mediums and approaches.
a wonderful celebration of what can be made in different materials and a really eclectic show. Part of the exhibition space is held within two 1890s railway carriages, along with an atrium, railway station and not forgetting a tea room serving delicious cakes. Erwood Station was recently awarded a certificate of excellence from Trip Advisor, from all the positive feedback. More info at www.erwoodstation.com.
On the back of the Lion Street Gallery’s success, in March 2015, Brent and his wife Christina opened a new gallery called Erwood Station Gallery near Builth Wells, set in a beauty spot by the river. This space, at over 2,500 square feet, is now the largest privately run contemporary applied arts gallery in Wales. ‘Applied art’ is another way of saying contemporary craft – they have over 80 designermakers exhibiting work in ceramics, glass, wood, resin, metal, paper, textiles...the list goes on. Securing the future of Gwernyfed RFC In 1965 Gwernyfed RFC was formed by Dai Knapp and Bernard Altmeyer who decided to start a local rugby team, which they named “Gwernyfed Old Boys”, and that was the foundation of Gwernyfed RFC as we know it today. One team became two and now we have 17 teams from under 7s to Ladies and Senior Men. Games were played at Gwernyfed School and Bronllys Road but the Club wanted its own pitches, so the “Harassment Committee” was formed and all members started harassing Powys County Council to purchase the ground on Trefecca Road. This they did and in September 1986 the new pitches were laid. The Club leased the ground and the first game was played there in November 1989. In 1990, at the same time as the pitches were sourced, the Club was busy fundraising to purchase a Club House. Cake stalls, raffles, barn dances, jumble sales, concerts and more were held and in the late 1980s the Malt House was purchased and
work began to renovate it; and we have the Club House as you know it today. In 2016 we now have the chance to purchase the Pitches and “Secure the Future of Gwernyfed RFC”, so the fundraising starts again. Local events include Cake stalls, raffles, etc. and the sale of “Turf Squares” at £25 each. When the board is complete it will have pride of place in the Function Room at the Club. To purchase a square contact Shan Thomas on 07884 309 433 or to support an event go to our website www.gwernyfedrfc.co.uk or our page on Facebook.

The Cider House of Talgarth Herefordshire is renowned for the growing of apples and pears for the production of cider and perry, but the grounds of a number of properties in Talgarth were once used, in small and large part, to grow apples to be sold for conversion into cider. Some, now residential homes, were once pubs, selling the cider, but one property went even further and operated both a pub and a cider house, producing its own cider on site. This property is located along ‘The Bank‘ between the town square and St Gwendoline’s Church. An extra wide front door offers a clue that this property was not always purely a residential home. Casks of cider would have been rolled across the road from the ‘Cider House’ and into the property when it operated as pub. The house has a vaulted cellar, the entrance of which is directly opposite the front door so the casks could be rolled into the house/pub and straight into the cellar. Adjacent to the house is a double garage, but once two cider workers’ cottages stood there, whilst a further six cottages were located in the grounds of the Cider House and orchard opposite. Indeed the remains of the fireplaces of six cottages can still be seen in the grounds of the old Cider House. The smallness of the cottages is indicated by the distance between the fireplaces but the scale of the cider house operation was clearly impressive as indicated by the fact that at least eight workers were employed in the cider making. Article supplied by Alan Lovell – Talgarth & District Historical Society. The society meets every last Thursday of the month in Gwernyfed Rugby Club at 7.30pm.

POETRY PAGE
The Toffee-Apple Eater by Gerry Everett Young Tom had a passion for all sorts of apples Of the stickiest toffee kind, Whether Pippins or Russets, Worcesters or Cox, He ‘d eat any that he could find.
One day in the spring he met a sweet girl With brown hair and cheeks, plump and rosy, Her life he would share but she did not care For a sticky young man to be cosy.
“Now too many apples will give you a pain In your head and your tum,” said Mum, “But you said they were good, to eat when I could For my health and my teeth,” grumbled Tom.
So Tom gave up the Braeburns, the Laxtons, the Jazz And toffee he gave up for life, He found it much wiser to substitute cider, If she were to be his new wife.
“But excess causes distress, my dear son, And toffee your teeth will decay,” But Tom in his greed, Mum’s advice did not heed And the dentist looked on with dismay.
Now she had a love not for apples, but pears, With her favourite tipple, a perry, So to run a cider mill, she said “Yes, I will”, And their life was idyllic – and so merry!
On one bright autumn day when the harvest was in, And the apples were luscious and ripe, With a pain in his head, our Tom took to his bed, With a nasty attack of the gripe.
Have you written a poem and would you be thrilled to see it published in the Wye Local? If yes, please send your poem to: clare@wyelocal.co.uk. Please include your name and contact number.
As Tom grew much older, a handsome young man The pretty young maids he soon dated But when girls came to grips, to kiss soft, sticky lips, Was a thing that he found they just hated.
Or perhaps in your life you’ve come across a poem that means a lot to you? Send it to us.
Tom’s fingers stuck fast to their clothing and skin, His image had greatly declined For a man well aware, and indeed debonair His love life was much undermined.
We look forward to hearing from you.

Vandalism at Hay St Mary’s FC “I’m Martin Tong and I’m Chairman of Hay St Mary’s FC. The club runs 3 Senior Men’s sides and a Senior Ladies’ side. Our Junior section has over 100 children playing, boys and girls. So all in all we have around 200 members at the club playing football which is amazing in a small town like Hay. The club has been fundraising to purchase a new spectator stand which is being erected at the end of August. I was very disappointed recently to find our old stand had been damaged by local youths. The roof was smashed, the sides had bricks thrown through them, the dug-out had been jumped on and damaged and the graphics on the back of the stand torn off.

News from... Black Mountains Lions Club The Black Mountains Lions are proud to be able to help by giving £500 towards raising funds for a specialised NBS (Navigated Brain Stimulation) system. Eighteen-year-old Jack Keylock from Hay-on-Wye has been battling with a rare brain tumour for the past 19 months. The Heads of the Neurology & Oncology Departments at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) who are in charge of Jack’s case have carried out many complex neurological operations.
16s team, was to take on his Dad’s age group – the retired ‘Clyro Old Stars’. The match was played on 17th July at Hay St Mary’s Football Ground. All donations to go towards an NBS system for the hospital. The Hay U16 side played 3 separate 30 minute games against teams of ‘oldies’. The scores were unimportant really. But rumour is that they made about £5K for the QEHB. The Neurology Department is continuing to raise money for the specialised Navigated Brain Stimulation system. So far they have raised £150,000 but the total cost is £300,000. Fundraising continues, with nurses skydiving among many other things. Well done Jack! www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/blackmtns.
Before Jack was diagnosed in 2014 he actively played rugby for Gwernyfed & Hay’s Sunday Saints Rugby League and if he had not suffered a mild concussion whilst playing, the tumour would not have been detected so early on. Jack still has an avid interest in the sport and decided that on his discharge in June he would organise a charity event. His younger brother, in the Hay Under

Bryngwyn RDA The summer has been erratic, but the riders, volunteers and ponies at Bryngwyn RDA always enjoy the beautiful countryside around the Bryngwyn Riding Centre where we are based. Activities over the summer have included a week in Kington community shop which raised a very welcome £1,400. Many thanks to all those who donated items for us to sell, and also to the volunteers and helpers who supported us in the shop over the week. We all had fun “playing shopkeepers” while boosting the group’s funds at the same time. We will also have a stand at Kington Show on the 10th September, so come along and say hello. We will have various items for sale, and will be sharing news and information about the group. We are, as always, in much need of new volunteers. No knowledge of horses is needed, just a willingness to help others. You would be part of a very friendly team, and our volunteers do as little or as much as they chose. If you would like to find out more, or to get in touch
about any other aspect of the group please call 01497 851 360 or email Bryngwyn.rda@gmail.com. Glasbury Get-Together Club On 27th July Mr & Mrs Chris Posnett hosted our annual ‘Treasure Hunt’. The weather was wonderful, warm and sunny. Vigorous searching commenced in the lovely garden for six numbered ‘Treasures’. Later we all retired to the conservatory where we enjoyed some cream teas. Our next meeting is on Wednesday 28th September in Glasbury Village Hall, 2.30–4.30pm. We invite you to bring along your favourite poems, tales, and maybe funny experiences for our afternoon of Poems & Tales. Don’t be shy, but if you prefer just to attend, we still have our usual raffle and tea & biscuits later. Reminder: Our fundraising Table Top Sale will be held on Saturday 24th September, 9–10am set up. Trading from 10am to 1pm. If you would like a table at £6 each, please book soon. Items donated to sell will be greatly appreciated. Cakes, produce from the garden, bric a brac, plants, etc. Refreshments available. Ring to book or for more information:

secondary bacterial infection. Remember: A flu jab doesn’t cause flu. Telephone voice recording: Please note all incoming and outgoing telephone calls to/from Haygarth Doctors are now recorded. Hay Town Council The Town Council has recently been talking to Powys County Council about the ongoing provision of library services in Hay-on-Wye. Although the new school plans include a public library space the Town Council has been told that the community will need to find 50% of the running costs in order to maintain the service provision. This equates to around £18,000 per year if the opening hours and staffing level were to be maintained at current levels. The Town Council believes that a “Town of Books” without a library is almost unthinkable but is reluctant to commit to asking residents to fund the service on an ongoing basis, particularly as only around a third of Hay library users actually live in Hay. The only way that the Town Council can raise
money is through increasing the precept. This is a proportion of the council tax paid to Powys that is then transferred to Hay Town Council. At present the amount of precept per household in Hay for a Band D property is £48 per year. In order to generate sufficient funding for the library the precept would have to increase by almost half. As stated previously, this is not an option we wish to consider and are currently considering a range of alternatives. Supplied by Cllr Trudy Stedman – Deputy Mayor. U3A Hay US Presidential elections are always fascinating. Their outcomes have a huge impact not only on the Americans themselves but also on the rest of the world. As the Presidential elections in November approach, we cannot help but be swept up in the contest between the Republican (Trump) and Democratic (Clinton) nominees. At our next meeting on Tuesday 20th September, we will have a day with renowned US historian, Roger Curtis. Starting at 10.30am, he will take us back to the memorable event in 1963 with

REVIEW
Gourmet Burgers now on the menu at The Sandwich Cellar! weight is a baked potato with baked beans. Other choices vary between paninis, toasties, homemade soup with roll, and ice-cream for pudding. Assorted hot and cold beverages are also available. They also have a Specials board which changes frequently. You can eat in, either inside the cafe or outside at the tables and chairs each side of the pavement, or you can have a take-away. Jane and Charlotte mentioned that they also take on outside catering and are available for weddings, buffet teas, conferences, funerals, etc.
The Sandwich Cellar in Hay’s Backfold offers Beef, Venison, Lamb & mint, Pork & apple and also vegetarian burgers. All at £8 each apart from the Beef and the Vegetarian which come in at £7.50 each, and they are all served with fries and homemade coleslaw on a brioche roll.
Next time you are feeling a bit peckish and need a good, inexpensive lunch, pop over for a burger! Jane and Charlotte, a huge thank you from Clare and Robert. The Sandwich Cellar reviewed by Clare Williams
Robert and I sampled them during lunch a couple of weeks ago. Great flavours, nice and hot, great chips, one of the best coleslaws I’ve ever had and those brioche rolls are great. The pot of tea for two was just perfect. This is a lovely homely café in the popular shopping precinct of Hay, run by mother and daughter Jane and Charlotte. We really enjoyed sitting in there, people-watching out of the window! It was a really busy, buzzing place during our visit, a Wednesday lunchtime, with customers coming and going all the time. They sell every sandwich imaginable and all the fillings can be served in rolls, sliced bread or baguettes, on granary, white or gluten free. They even have gluten free sausages, supplied by WJ George Butchers, from Talgarth. If you don’t want carbs you can just have a plain salad from anything on the menu. They are flexible like that. A full English/Welsh breakfast is served all day. Cooked on a griddle so it’s healthier. Another popular dish for those who are watching their

Late summer family fun
A 14th Century Country Inn situated on
1. Go wild swimming: Spend a day at the river or beach with a picnic and no chlorine in sight. 2. Take the kids camping: You don’t have to drive far – the fun is in sleeping under the stars, so try out one of Hay’s many local campsites or even just your own garden. 3. Plant some vegetables: Late summer planting will give you an autumn or spring harvest…try putting in onions, carrots, radishes or broad beans. The kids will love helping to dig holes and pat the soil down. 4. Go for a hike with another family: Up the Bluff or across the Begwns, around Llanthony Priory or through the Olchon Valley – you’ll be surprised how far little legs can go when they’re competing to get there first! 5. Shop at a local market: Instead of bribing them with ice cream in order to get all your shopping done (although that works too!), let your kids pick a few new food items and then go home and work out how to make them into dinner together. 6. Play in the rain: Rain…it’s such a big part of the Great British Summer, it seems a shame to waste it indoors. Pick one grey afternoon to pack the kids outside for a rain dance – and you have to join in too! 7. Watch a film: Go as a family to a new release, or just pile on the sofa with some home-made popcorn and stick on a DVD of Laurel & Hardy. 8. Go berry picking: It’s time for blackberries and other juicy treats. See who can fill their basket the quickest, then take them home and make a big fruit crumble!

New Active Monitoring service to support mental health issues In September Brecon and District Mind will be operating a new service out of Hay and Talgarth GP surgeries called Active Monitoring. This early intervention service will mean that the Practice clinical team are able to refer anyone with symptoms of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem or stress directly to a Mind Practitioner in the surgery to be seen straight away. The Mind Practitioner will carry out a short assessment and will then see the person for up to five sessions to support them through a guided self management programme using a range of booklets and informative leaflets. This exciting new service is being run in collaboration with the GP cluster and Red Kite Health Solutions CIC, and hopefully will mean that people will not need to experience long waits for services through the NHS. They will, in many cases, be able to feel better without further intervention as the
practitioner will be able to guide them through options and offer solutions to help them maintain their mental health. Red Kite Health Solutions CIC is a community interest company made up of the 4 GP practices in South Powys (Brecon, Crickhowell, HayGarth & Ystradgynlais). Their formal objective is to carry on activities which will benefit the community and to improve the health and quality of the lives of people living in South Powys and surrounding areas. Brecon Mind is only the second Local Mind in Wales to offer the service, thanks to the forward thinking GPs in our area who are seeking better ways of providing services for people experiencing mental health issues. They hope that they will be able to reach out to far more people in the local community and support them back to a state of wellbeing.
