Hello Welcome to the last issue of 2016. Let’s get festive and go all out! Hit the high streets for some unique gifts. Pop along to the Christmas markets and events. Be sure to enjoy some mulled wine along the way. All that bag carrying deserves a reward. Save room for cake if you have a productive trip Christmas shopping. Turn to pages 36–52 for some ideas to get you started. Remember spending money locally will go into the pockets of local people. It’s also party season, when seeing a group of ladies dressed as elves, or a gang of fellas dressed as Santas is not uncommon. Many office outings will by now be organised and date fixed, but if yours isn’t, take this issue in to the boss and turn to the Party section. This should be a big enough hint! Don’t forget to rally up friends or family and arrange a get together locally. Our area is bustling with superb restaurants and drinking holes so you’re guaranteed a good feed and/or a delightful beverage or two. Did you know Hay Library is under threat of closure? Hay-on-Wye, the world-famous book town without a library…ludicrous. Turn to page 19 to see how you can help prevent this. Hats off to Clare this month for her witty article on page 20. Exciting times for Sheila Lewis. Lastly I’d like to show a warm welcome to the following new advertisers. The Metal Workers – page 2. Morgans of Pontybat – page 37. Wye Valley Brewery – page 42. It’s a joy to have you on board.

Brecon and Radnorshire has an incredibly proud military history, which is why it was so disappointing to hear that the Conservative Government plans to close the Brecon Barracks.

Wishing all of our customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

The proposed closure will come as a massive blow to the area. This decision, along with the planned closure of the Sennybridge Storage Compound, show the UK Government’s complete lack of respect for our history.

Rural Schools In my role as Cabinet Secretary for Education, I recently announced plans to protect and invest in rural schools. Small and rural schools play an important role in raising standards and extending opportunities for all our young people. All children must have access to the best possible education and the same opportunities as other children in Wales, wherever they live.

The plans I announced will enable councils and schools to be innovative and do what is best for pupils and their communities. Amongst several new measures the plans include: a presumption against closure, local authorities will have to carry out more rigorous consultation and conscientiously consider all viable alternatives to closure and a new £2.5m per year fund to promote community usage of school buildings and support greater school to school working. This was part of the Welsh Liberal Democrat manifesto and I am very pleased to be introducing the policy that will strengthen rural schools. If you would like more information on this policy, or on any other issue, please contact my office at Kirsty. williams@assembly.wales or on 01874 625 739.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth In recent weeks we have seen a seasonal autumn mist, a distinct chill in the air and occasionally it has been necessary to de-ice the car in the morning but, as this last Wye Local of 2016 is put to bed, the Met Office is warning us of a stormy weekend in prospect, maybe heralding the onset of winter. One local event that reminds us each year that Christmas is fast approaching is the Talgarth Luncheon Club Christmas lunch, which falls this time on Tuesday 6th December. From early in the morning, the volunteers will arrive at the Town Hall, to make sure that all the preparations are in place for another special occasion. And this celebration comes only a few weeks after the very same team was out in force to host the fifth annual afternoon tea, in memory of the late Mrs Val Harvey MBE, raising an impressive £1,151 towards Macmillan Cancer Support. This is thanks to the efforts of all the helpers who contribute in so many ways to our community. Alun Tandy, Macmillan’s Development Manager for Mid and North Wales was in attendance again this year, to express his appreciation and it was good to see our own Scott Powell there too, as he is a key member of the Macmillan team in our area. It is the same spirit of volunteering at Luncheon Club that is demonstrated by Talgarth Christmas Lights Group, whose hard work over many weeks lights up our town in the run up to Christmas. On Saturday 29th October, Bronllys Hospital & Community League of Friends held their Autumn Fair in Talgarth Church Hall. I know that Maggie Sims and her colleagues have recently welcomed several new members to the team, to continue their good work for Bronllys Hospital and the wider community. With the ambitious proposals for Bronllys Wellbeing Park taken further forward at the recent AGM on 24th November, when the group’s status as a legal entity was confirmed, these are exciting as well as challenging times for Bronllys Hospital.

Whilst disappointment has been expressed that the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority Planning Committee felt it necessary to refer back the application for our new school on Hay Road on concerns around pedestrian safety, their decision has to be respected. In fact, it provides a valuable opportunity to consider these vital issues alongside the likely impact of the new housing development proposed for the adjacent site. I shall also be working with other governors and pupils in the School’s Road Safety Committee in the coming weeks to ensure that the voice of our young people is heard by the members of the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. I am optimistic that we will secure an early Christmas present for Talgarth and the wider area at their December meeting. The new school will be the biggest investment in Talgarth for many decades, enhancing the town’s status as an area centre for education, health and public services for the years to come. I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks, at one of the several community events signalling the season of Advent. The Christmas Market is being held at Talgarth Town Hall on Saturday 3rd December and promises to be a special occasion again this year. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issues of concern, please don’t hesitate to contact me on: 07703 112113, by email: cllr.william.powell@powys.gov.uk, via Facebook or Twitter @WmPowell2016. Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday 2nd December from 5pm at Talgarth TiRC. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue that is troubling you, at this busy time of year. Happy Christmas William

News from Chris Davies

Baskerville Hall Hotel Clyro Court Nr Hay-on-Wye

on the A438 Hereford to Brecon main road at Clyro

-Your local MP

Two weeks ago we received the fantastic news that employment in Brecon and Radnorshire is at an alltime high, with unemployment claimants falling by 62% since 2010 in our area. Brecon and Radnor is a fantastic place to live, and we are lucky to have such a beautiful and rural place to call home. That being said, we are seeing our constituency’s average age rise, year on year. This can create some issues for our local economy. I believe there are many issues that must be faced head on, both in Westminster and in the Assembly in order to rebalance our economy. We need to create an economy here in Brecon and Radnorshire that attracts young talent from all over the country, we must encourage high tech businesses, both large and small to set up in our community. The jobs created by these organisations and the prosperity they would bring would transform this area. But why don’t these companies set up in our community? South Powys has strong links to South Wales and South West England and the North to North Wales and North West England. Surely we would make the perfect hub for a successful tech firm or high tech manufacturing company. I believe there are areas in which we could improve in order to attract such firms.Transport is key to having a successful economy, I believe investment in our roads is a must in the coming years. Driving from the South of our constituency to the North you would have to drive all the way on one lane roads, the creation of some duel carriageways at various points and bypasses will help to navigate through Brecon and Radnorshire exponentially. This investment will show businesses that we are open for business. The next area we must improve is rural broadband. I have campaigned on this issue both in Westminster and within Brecon and Radnorshire and access is now slowly increasing. This is a key reason why businesses don’t move to our constituency, they simply can’t get the high speed access they require to operate an effective business. In the 21st century we should not have parts of our country that can’t get effective mobile and internet access. We are in the middle of a global digital era and having high speed broadband would be a huge pull for businesses to set up here.

Next generation fitness! There’s a video I put up recently that epitomises all I feel about Fitness and gaining the confidence to start, stick at it, persevere and reap the rewards: a lass is trying to boxjump onto a platform about 16’’ high. It’s one of those classics where she gets right to the point of jumping then loses her nerve. I hope the box isn’t too hard as each time she tries she gets so close she bangs her shins. It’s funny as hell and she’s really good natured about it, but you can also sense her frustration. Her trainer (who can box jump much higher!), watches bemused for a little while then fetches a tiny platform for her, 1” high. She does it. Then a slightly higher one, slightly higher again, until she finally (on the same session) does it - and the elation she feels radiates from the screen.THIS is what it’s all about! I have 6 Personal Training clients at the moment and of those I’d say 5 are simply after getting their confidence back, to the point where they feel empowered to either exercising in a group or building a range of different disciplines to practice at home and with me. You are NOT alone if you’re not feeling confident – it’s really common and I so get it. Even in the club I am always very aware of the ‘lass at the back’ and how she feels. (I still remember how

I felt going to my first aerobics 30 years ago, when it was at its height – I was certainly NOT fit and definitely NOT coordinated)! I feel fitness is making an important shift in this respect. We’re recognising that there’s FAR MORE to fitness, health and wellness than ‘jumping about’. I’ve often spoken here on how I won’t advise clients to do really metabolic work if they’re already stressed. To this end, I was chomping at the bit to do a fantastic course recently which enables me to teach a session called ‘The BrainFit WorkoutTM’. This uses amazing music, simple choreography, and a sprinkling of magic (I don’t want to give it all away!), ending with a guided meditation section, which will reduce stress, increase your confidence and help to banish negative internal chatter, fusing mind, body and soul with a softer approach than you might be used to. We did our first one a week ago and ended the session feeling really happy, positive, and powerful. Not just for this session but ANY classes you might do (as you can take what we do here away with you to use anywhere – even at home). Let’s end this year MINDFUL as well as fit! Get to really know... Jayne Evans

Most fortunate to be the librarian at Hay-on-Wye, proud Cymraes, former youth worker, and mother. I spend a lot of time with my lovely Dad as my mother died last year. Place of birth? Maesteg. Where do you live now? Aberhonddu. Marital status? Irrelevant. Occupation? Librarian at Hay-on-Wye. Children? Three lovely boys, and five glorious grandchildren. Pets? No. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Ryan and Ronnie, for a Welsh child in Yorkshire it was a joy. Are you a collector of anything? Arts and crafts materials, tons of it. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A Welsh international rugby player. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? The ability to resolve any conflict. And I want to be Miss World. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? “I’m tired”. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? The Archers, having just listened to it. Do you believe in ghosts? No. Most exciting thing you’ve won? A place on 15 to 1. Two lessons life has taught you? It too shall pass. All shall be well and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well (Julian of Norwich). What makes you grumpy? Cruelty; not grumpy but miserable. Teenage crush? Gary Lineker (oops no, that’s for the last 30 years). You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Mostly the children, I suspect. Have any bad habits? I claim to indulge in all the vices. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Hawking, not Kes, the throat clearing business. Do you believe in the afterlife? Nope.

What book would you recommend to others? The Facts of Life by Graham Joyce. Best present ever received? The children. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Smoking. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Canberra, to visit the Australian branch of the Evanses. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: To stop smoking, to be calmer, to draw and paint more, to practise the piano and to speak fluent Welsh. Name one regret you have: Smoking. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Endless, guilt-free time to read. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Being a mother. What’s your favourite song of the moment? ‘Soave sia il vento’ (from Cosi Fan Tutte). What’s your favourite song of all time? ‘Mae hen wlad fy nhadau’. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Go to the theatre. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Snooze in front of Come Dine with Me. Hidden talents? Acting, arguably. I’m soon to appear as Bishop Betty Belcher in Greed The Rock Opera, The Movie. What would be your dream job? Shakespearean actor but I’m really rubbish at learning lines. If you HAD to change your name, what would you change it to? Sian Ifans. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Made a bed, with the help of my son. Sum yourself up in five words: A muddled mass of contradictions.

Animal Funeral Services WW1 Peace Celebrations in Talgarth With Remembrance Sunday having just passed it is opportune to reflect on what the news of the cessation of hostilities must have meant to people living in the UK and how communities set about preparing for their celebrations. The Brecon County Times reported on 11th November 1918 that the declaration of peace was celebrated in Talgarth with much rejoicing. Flags were flown and a band paraded through the town and well into the night. The bells of St Gwendoline rang their peals many times over. However, the transfer of troops from the battle zones to home could not happen immediately, and the first peace celebrations in Talgarth involving homecoming troops did not take place until Easter Monday 1919. During the year further celebratory dinners and ‘teas’ were held for returning soldiers, but the ‘grand’ celebration had to wait a little longer. The ‘full’ peace celebrations party took place on 19th July 1919, with the planning of the day itself displaying something of military operation. Initially a committee comprising 20 women and 20 men was proposed, but the Parish Council took primary responsibility for the event which may have something to do with the councillors personally providing a fair proportion of the funding to make the celebrations possible. Invitations to tender for the provision of tea and two kinds of cake (fruit and plain) and bread with butter were sought, along with the supply of 350 buns, some with and some without currants (every taste was being catered for). Two weeks later two tenders were received, one from the Swan Hotel (since demolished, but which stood on what is now George’s Green) and one from the local Talgarth stores, run by Mr Evans. Mr Evans was successful in his bid, which was at a cost of 9p per person for the teas, cakes and bread and butter; and 350 buns at a cost of 14 buns per 1/- (5p). Allowing for inflation this equates to the charge for the tea, cake, bread and butter and fruit cake being £5.58 per person; for the buns 22p per bun; with the charge for the commemorative medals being equivalent to £1.30 each. By any standards this seems good value. Article supplied by Alan Lovell, Talgarth & District History Society.

the moment I am most proud of Decibelles as they are a group of ladies who have risen to every challenge I have given them and more. They are the best of friends and we have an amazing time working together. Have you any future plans for your work? I want to explore more mixed media with both my creative work as well as my musical work. Incorporating more improvisatory aspects in both – who knows, I might be able to find some way of putting the two together. Perhaps an exhibition with a performance alongside it... What advice would you give a local artist? Follow your heart, don’t worry about mistakes and keep on exploring your voice. Which other local artists do you admire? Billy Charity – I love the way she shows people in a casual and special way making them really speak through her camera. Aine Venables – love her work and her colour palette. Toria Whitfield of Field and Found for her vision and her expertise.

Save Hay Library with HOWLS Please ask that: • Powys County Council start a proper consultation about the library’s future • Let him know why you value the library • Tell him how important the professional staff are to library users and the local community.

Yes, I know it sounds ridiculous. Hay, the ‘town of books’, without a library. Yet that is what Powys County Council are threatening us with. They are on course to start library closures across the county, with 10 libraries being threatened. After a public meeting on 17 October to support the library, residents started emailing and writing to Cllr Graham Brown, portfolio holder for libraries, calling on him to halt closure talks. A supporters group was formed from the meeting. We are called HOWLS – Hay-on-Wye Library Supporters. The pressure has resulted in Powys postponing closure talks but they have now passed the buck to Hay Town Council. Our Town Council should not be made to solve Powys’ ill-considered decision to make a 50% cut in the library services. Our next task is to challenge Powys on how they handle the consultation process and demand that the community be given time to properly consider the range of options for the future of Hay and the other libraries. Hay is a working rural town with a diverse community who use the library for a whole range of facilities. In the last financial year Hay library received 17,605 visits. It is a busy and well-used library. Please show your support for Hay library and the staff by writing to: Cllr Graham Brown, Deputy Leader/Cabinet Portfolio Holder, Member Support at Powys County Hall, Spa Road East, Llandrindnod Wells, Powys LD1 5LG. Or you can email him at: cllr.graham.brown@powys.gov.uk.

Please also support us at HOWLS. There is still lots to do, so if have any time or skills please let us know, email or write to: HOWLS, Bridge House, Newport Street, Hayon-Wye HR3 5BG or email us at: info@savehaylibrary.org. Article written by Richard Greatrex

The Beauty and the Beasts!

The Beauty Mill

Get your nails done for the Christmas period With Jessica Geleration colour for nails Nail gel that lasts at least 2 weeks and doesn’t ruin your nails £20 to include hand massage Book now Mill Service Station Three Cocks Brecon LD3 0SL 01497 847 081

After holding a Trainer’s Permit for two years, Sheila Lewis from The Beauty Mill at Three Cocks has now been granted a full trainer’s licence by The Jockey Club. Our local Beauty Therapist is up there now with the big players like top trainers Nicky Henderson and Venetia Williams. Only just the other day I was sitting there in the ‘pre-parade ring’ at The Beauty Mill, waiting to have my ‘whiskers’ seen to and was thinking that I might just have a Deluxe Manicure for my ‘hooves’ before Christmas or my next holiday. Those horses also love to have a coat of nail varnish on their toes before their morning canter up on Hay Common or before the 2.40pm at Aintree! In the winter the horses have their coats clipped by Sheila just as we ladies have a waxing done. This month we are all sporting the Brazilian look! Sheila can give you just as good a massage as she gives the horses, and they even get given light therapy treatment and ultra sound which is good for the regeneration of new cells. Those horses want for nothing... Seven horses occupy Sheila’s training yard which is soon to feature a brand spanking new washing down area and up to the minute solarium. Lucky beasts! Mind you, we fillies and mares can get our all over tan at The Beauty Mill, either a spray tan in the ‘stable’ or in the vertical solarium. Please note too, that Gift Vouchers are available. A favourite idea for Christmas presents for loved ones. It’s ‘odds-on’ that it will be a ‘winning’ present! Sheila is ably assisted by Beauty Therapist Charlotte Lote. Experienced and qualified, just like Sheila, but there isn’t enough room on this ‘race-card’ here to list all the letters they’ve got after their names! Women come in to The Beauty Mill to be pampered and to feel in ‘good form’ when they leave the ‘paddock’. ‘Groomed’ to perfection, most of us fillies leave kicking our heels as if we are ready to run in the Mares Hurdle at Cheltenham! Brilley Christmas Tree Festival and Craft Market On Friday 2nd December, in the Community Hall in the parish of Brilley and Michaelchurch, a community led event is being held to make Christmas wreaths which will be sold at the Christmas Tree Festival at St Mary’s Church in Brilley and the Christmas Market in the Community Hall on both Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December. It’s being held between 10am and 4pm and those who wish to go along, even for just an hour or two and have an enjoyable time making wreaths, should bring a packed lunch. Teas and coffees will be provided. There is no charge for this event, but please contact Phyllis Jones on 01497 831535 for further details and let her know if you can provide any materials such as ivy, laurel, moss, holly etc. On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th December, the Christmas Market is being held in the Community Hall in conjunction with the Christmas Tree Festival which will be held in St Mary’s Church, Brilley. These take place between 10am and 5pm. At the Christmas Market there will be festive refreshments, charity stalls, craftspeople, Christmas wreaths, holly and mistletoe, mulled wine and a raffle. The Christmas Tree Festival is a community led event that brings people and local organisations together by each decorating a Christmas tree and thereby transforming the church with over 40 sparkling and creatively decorated trees. Quite magical. The trees are decorated by businesses and organisations such as Brownies, charities, schools (all ages) and the local community, to the background of carols and Christmas music. Brilley and Michaelchurch-on-Arrow are blessed with two churches, which are very different to each

other and while one is in England (Brilley), the other is in Wales. However like all churches these days, both require maintenance work on them which incurs huge expense. So come along and support the festival and welcome the coming of Christmas. For more information contact Fiona Mead on 01497 831537 or email on fjmead59@yahoo.com.

The Drew Barker-Wright Appeal Drew Barker-Wright is a little boy from Talgarth who is currently in Birmingham Children’s Hospital suffering from an aggressive form of cancer, for which he needs to undergo prolonged treatment. We intend to support his parents, our friends Mel and Jon, by fundraising to enable them to stay together as a family whilst Drew has his treatment. Some of you will know Mel from her Zumba Classes, others of you will remember when she appeared on the Village SOS programme as part of the Talgarth Mill restoration. Her grandparents lived in Talgarth, and together with her Mum, Gaynor, Mel ran Dancewear UK until earlier this year. Jon works in Dorstone at the Neals Yard Creamery. Drew is their only child, and having waited six years for him to come along, he is now fighting for his life. Spencer Williams, who met the family in the hospital, has set up a Just Giving page where you can donate, and we will be running a series of events locally. All details can be

found on The Bakers’ Table Facebook page, starting with a coffee morning on Thursday 1st December, the proceeds of which will be donated to the fund for Drew. Please support us if you can. Thank you. Article written by Nicola Willis of The Bakers’ Table

Join our hero Dick as he sets out on an anticfilled journey with his cat and pantomime friends in search of fame and fortune. Will he be able to fight off the raucous King Rat? Will he find his one true love in the gorgeous Alice Fitzwarren? You’ll have to come to Theatr Brycheiniog this Christmas and find out!

This purr-fect festive treat is jam-packed with all the classic traditional ingredients of stunning sets, brilliant songs, dazzling choreography and heaps of comedy slapstick to encourage plenty of laughs and audience participation.

Archbishop Rowan Williams is an accomplished singer, loves a good joke and can read Dylan Thomas like a true native. Distinguished soprano Sally Bradshaw sings up a storm from Bach to Victorian Ballads, carols and folk songs. The Poinsettia could have been specifically designed for Christmas with its bright red halo and festive green foliage. However that red halo is not just a pretty face: It’s the secret of the Poinsettia’s popularity. It can last for months because the red halo consists of long-lasting leafy bracts rather than soft petals that shrivel up quickly. This allows the Poinsettia to look its best for up to 12 weeks or more. Poinsettias come from Mexico and they were discovered by Joel Poinsett in 1825 and were associated with Christmas even then. Poinsettias need bright but not strong light away from strong sun and draughts. They need a minimum temperature of 13 to 15 Celsius (55 – 59 Fahrenheit). It’s also a good idea to be careful when transporting Poinsettias from the garden centre to your home in the winter, as the cold outdoor temperatures can damage the foliage. Once home water Poinsettias sparingly as overwatering can damage plants. As a rule of thumb, only water when the surface of the compost has begun to dry out. With care Poinsettias can be kept for a second year but they tend to develop into woody, leggy shrubs. It’s much better to save up the pennies and buy another that has been cosseted and encouraged into growth by a regime of good food, greenhouse lights and heat! Finally if you would like a change from the traditional red bracts. There are now new varieties with dusky pink, pale yellow, deep plum or cream bracts and some even have variegated leaves. Every home should have one this Christmas. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Three Cocks

The Buttermarket in Hay-on-Wye will be filled with ethical gifts on Saturday 10th December when Fairtrade Hay hold their annual Christmas Fayre. Louise Davies from Fairtrade Hay says, “Christmas offers the perfect opportunity for us to use our pounds for the greater good. With the political events of this year, both trade and aid to developing countries is under threat. It’s never been more important for us to support fair trade and do all we can to help lift people out of poverty in developing countries. What’s more, the products on offer at the Fayre are beautifully made and will make very special gifts!” The stall holders at the event will include Zaytoun – olive oil and foods from Palestine; Dragon’s Garden – accessories from Nepal and South America; Love Zimbabwe – crafts, fabrics and ornaments from Zimbabwe; Zimele – crafts and jewellery from South Africa; Jump4Timbuktu – jewellery from Hay’s twin town of Timbuktu in Mali; and Tools for Self Reliance – selling refurbished tools in aid of Africa.

Hay Markets Hay’s produce market has been held for over 700 years. In Victorian times, people walked from miles around, leading pack ponies or riding with panniers full of goods. Livestock was sold in the streets until 1919: Pigs in Pig Lane (now Chancery Lane), cattle and sheep in Broad Street, and live poultry near the Clock Tower. In the covered markets one could buy dressed poultry, eggs, butter, cheese and rabbits. Our current Thursday Market, held weekly in Memorial Square, the Clock Tower, and Butter and Cheese Markets, may not have livestock, but continues to be a bustling hub for all your shopping and social needs; with everything from local produce, organic fruit and veg, artisan breads, local cheeses, fresh fish, meat, coffee and hot takeaway food, to Moroccan rugs, woollen socks, artist’s cards, antiques, clothing and homemade dog biscuits. There’s also a weekly Flea Market on Fridays/

A Family Christmas

W

by Ernestine Northover Sitting in front of the fire, Auntie Flo’s reciting a story, it’s one about her first Christmas as a newly wed, the same one she broadcasts every year, but no one is listening. Uncle Fred, ‘out to the world’ snores rhythmically on the sofa. Mother exhausted, having cooked the lunch, without help, as usual, stifles a yawn.

Have you written a poem and would you be thrilled to see it published in Wye Local?

Dad, brow furrowed, is trying to piece together Eddy’s lego set, whilst Eddy glowers, after all, it was ‘his’ present.

If yes, please send your poem to: clare@wyelocal.co.uk. Please include your name and contact number. Or perhaps in your life you’ve come across a poem that means a lot to you? Send it to us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Joe, playing with a set of ‘disco lights’ is sending flashes of colour across the room, straight into Grandpa’s eyes, making him feel even more bilious after having consumed too many chocolates. Grandma’s knitting. Grandma always knits on Christmas Day, and every other day, come to that, probably yet another scarf for what she believes is still the war effort. The cat, curled up on her lap, purrs contently, oblivious of the knitting needles, waving precariously in front of his sleepy eyes. Susan is gazing at the TV screen, . glued, for the umpteenth time to, ‘The Sound of Music’ movie, singing every song, word for word, at the top of her voice. ‘Turkey was nice’, said Auntie, ‘I was given too much’, moaned Grandpa, belching loudly. ‘Your problem is, you never can refuse a second helping’, said Grandma, ‘so it’s your own fault’. Mother grins and asks, ‘Would anybody like another mince pie? ‘
