Hello The month of January is a strange one. Some enter the New Year with positive feelings, determined to make changes to their lives, be it their diet, exercise regime or outlook. Others start January with a touch of sadness, the big man has been and gone, Christmas is over and family gatherings come to an end. Please turn to page 22 to read the team’s New Year resolutions. During 2017 we really hope to provide our readers with interesting and informative articles. We are chuffed with the monthly contributors we have. From local history instalments to some monthly fitness advice, from wildlife descriptions to gardeners’ interests. Our regular features like the ‘Get to really know...’ and the ‘Local Talent’ are very well received and our ‘News from’ section gives local clubs and organisations a local voice... Thank you to each and every author who meets our tight deadlines each month. This month is the last chance you’ll have to buy the 2017 Local Landscapes Calendar. Didn’t get one for Christmas? Turn to page 48 to see where you can purchase one.

Newss from

Kirsty Williams Without doubt, 2016 was a year of massive political change. Our prime minister has changed, our relationship with Europe will change, Donald Trump will be President of the United States, and the list goes on and on. 2017 could be a year for change here in Powys too. In May we will have local elections to Powys County Council. People right across the county frequently tell me they are frustrated with how our public services are being run by the Independent cabinet. The Welsh Liberal Democrats are determined to improve public services. We know how vital the

services the council provide are to communities across the county and we know the most vulnerable in our society depend on them most of all. I was very pleased to secure a funding floor for rural councils, including Powys, in this year’s Welsh Government budget. Rural areas have unique challenges in delivering its services and it is right the government recognises this. My focus in 2017 will be to continue to work alongside communities to protect services they rely on, to create and protect jobs so we can further develop our economy. I hope you and your family had a good Christmas, and I wish you all the very best for the New Year. As ever, if there is anything I can do to help, please do not hesitate to get in touch. You can call my office on 01874 625739, attend one of my regular surgeries, or send an email to Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth At the time of writing, we are in the final run up to Christmas, with special community gatherings for people of all ages. By the time that this edition hits the doormat, it will be the season to reflect upon the old year and look ahead to the new, with everyone wondering what 2017 will mean for us, our families and community and those we hold dear. The past year, more than any that I can recall, has had its share of difficulties and challenges – as well as a generous quota of unpredictable events. While the world looks ahead to the inauguration on US President Donald J Trump on Friday 20th January and British eyes are focused on the UK Supreme Court ruling on the triggering of Brexit, whenever it emerges, I can only conclude that we need the wisdom of the Magi more than usual this year. However, despite the turbulence of international events, our community has many reasons to count its blessings this year. The successful culmination of our lengthy and hard fought campaign to save Gwernyfed High School is one that we have every cause to celebrate. Now, as a member of the Community and Premises Committee of the Gwernyfed Governing Body, I intend to play my full part in ensuring that the £6,000,000 investment earmarked for Gwernyfed by the Welsh Government is spent to best effect. Recent experience shows us that the best decisions are those made locally and I am clear that those who know and care about Gwernyfed most are best placed to oversee this project. At the same time, we anticipate construction of the new Talgarth/Bronllys School at Hay Road to commence in February, provided that the final planning issues have been successfully dealt with by the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority. This level of capital investment in our area is unprecedented, especially when the pressure on public finances is so intense. It is only right to recognise that fact. The last few years have brought their share of uncertainty, and it is now the duty of the Shadow Governing Body to help navigate the course of the single school, currently at the Talgarth and Bronllys sites, to its new home at Hay Road. The

pupils of both schools have come forward with a shared proposal for the name of their new school – Ysgol y Mynydd Du ~ Black Mountains School. For such an important step in the development of our new area primary school to be determined by the pupils jointly is genuinely significant – and I hope that the Powys County Council Cabinet Member for Education, Cllr Arwel Jones, will give his blessing to the proposed new name. In recent weeks, our community has come together in a very moving way to provide support and raise funds for young Drew Barker-Wright as he undergoes cancer treatment at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The events already held locally have been imaginative, organised by individuals, businesses, churches and a number of local groups. I know that a football fixture is planned for Boxing Day between Talgarth Town and the Veterans and the crew of Talgarth Fire Station has held a couple of popular car wash sessions to raise funds. I am organising a Fish and Chip Supper and Quiz at The Castle Hotel with Tom Sharp later in January – please look out for details. Drew’s parents Melanie and John and his grandparents Gaynor and Howard have been touched by the community response and we wish little Drew and the family strength in the next phase of his treatment. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2017. My next advice surgery is on Friday 6th January from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. No appointment is necessary, but advance notice is sometimes helpful, if the issues you wish to raise are complex. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue that may be troubling you. Happy New Year William

Gardening Column

OUTDOOR & INDOOR CYCLAMEN Cyclamen, which grow from flattened bulbs known as corms, are extremely versatile plants as our title suggests. Outdoors in January the autumn cyclamen for pots, troughs and baskets, will have finished their flowering but should still be displaying their attractive, marbledpatterned leaves. They can be planted out into shady parts of the garden in spring and have every chance of flowering again next autumn. In the garden itself the much smaller flowered Cyclamen hederifolium, the ivyleaved cyclamen, produce their pink or white flowers in August to November and by January they will also be showing off their patterned leaves, every plant have a different pattern. However, it is after Christmas that Cyclamen coum with their heart- shaped leaves start to burst into flower. Both of these species prefer a shady position beneath trees and shrubs and if left undisturbed will seed around and eventually produce large areas of attractive flowers and leaf where other plants struggle to grow well. Indoors in the winter the more flamboyant, large flowered Cyclamen persicum hybrids take centre stage. Their flowers come in all shades of pink as well as red and white, some are frilled, others are scented. They prefer cooler areas in the house and are best watered by placing them for a few minutes in a water tray and then allowing to drain before placing back into their pot covers. They can be kept in best condition by removing yellowing leaves and by twisting off spent flower stalks as low down as possible. Bring some colour to your home and garden with these delicate blooms.

Get to really know... Belinda Jenkins I’ve been so fortunate to have lived in and around Hayon-Wye most of my life. Life hasn’t always been easy but you appreciate the good times and I have wonderful memories of the people who have been part of it. I now spend lots of time having fun with the grandchildren when not working in the family tree surgery business. I play sheep farming at home…just love a bit of lambing in the spring. My friend once described me as the mad widow who lives on the hill with her animals, which most probably sums me up quite well. Place of birth? Newtown, Powys. Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? Widow. Occupation? Director of R Jenkins & Sons Ltd. Children? Three children and four grandchildren. Pets? Ollie (St Bernard), Dior (whippet), Reggie and Gaynor (donkeys) and two new ducks (this year’s secret Santa present from work). What was your favourite childhood television programme? Thunderbirds – always fancied myself as Lady Penelope but never quite made it. Are you a collector of anything? Chairs (thanks to Llewellyn and Co). If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? Horse – no reason, just love them. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To backtrack time so I could change the outcome for people. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? How many coffees will I make today? What do you think about right before falling asleep? Can I stay awake to see the end of this film? Most exciting thing you’ve won? A child’s bicycle when the boys were young but unfortunately it was a pink colour and they were not impressed. Two lessons life has taught you? Live every day like it was your last Enjoy being with family and friends. What makes you grumpy? Ironing – it was one way of getting the kids to go out to play: once that ironing board came out of the cupboard the kids would scatter. Teenage crush? David Essex. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? I’d love to say family but I may buy myself a new

Range Rover too. Have any bad habits? Plenty I’m sure, but smoking being the worst. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Liars, as they always get caught out...why bother?! Do you believe in the afterlife? I would love to think there was something after this as there are so many I would love to meet up with but I have my doubts. What book would you recommend to others? Riders by Jilly Cooper. Best present ever received? My lovely bird coop. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Not to be so trusting...shouldn’t believe everything people tell you. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: I’ve just accomplished one by attending a Welsh Rugby match; unfortunately they lost that time.Visit the Maldives. Redesign my garden. Retire. Take up landscape painting again. Name one regret: Not saying goodbye to loved ones. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Hay Youth Club which was at Frank Lewis House. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Visiting the children to see how they are coping with parenthood and thinking they are having a little bit back which they gave me. What’s your favourite song of the moment? ‘Nobody But Me’ sung by Michael Bublé. What’s your favourite song of all time? ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ sung by Mariah Carey. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Out for a drink with friends. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Sit down after a Sunday roast. Have any hidden talents? Not really – Jack of All Trades, Master of None. What would be your dream job? Paramedic. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Built a new run for my new additions to the family (the ducks). Sum yourself up in five words: Coffee-making Gran to everyone.

David Newell

Bespoke Joinery and Furniture

The History of Hay A question was asked at the first meeting of Hay History Group several years ago - “what do we know about the history of Hay?” A good question. Well there had been several books published over the years about the general history - notably A History of the Hay by Geoffrey Fairs in 1972.There had been a monthly newsletter called Haywire from 1985 to 2002 produced by Dickie Moule which contained much local history and gossip. And Eric and Tim Pugh had published excellent books of photographs of the town. But there had been very little detail about the history of the ordinary inhabitants of the town, where they lived and what they did. So I set about finding what was available – and there was a lot. I started looking online, in libraries, newspapers and record offices and amassed a vast amount of detail which I entered into my computer. I then had to work out a plan of how to communicate this in a meaningful way and decided as a baseline to publish a directory which gave all the people in their properties in Hay as it would have been in 1911.This was soon amended to include all the census detail back to 1841 and any data I had on the properties which I had gleaned from the above sources. It was a big undertaking but resulted in the Historical Directory of Hay on Wye which was published in 2014. A second edition followed in 2015. The book covered the town of Hay but I had plans to cover the whole parish. This work was completed in September 2016 and was published as Historical Directory of Hay on Wye – Rural Parish. In between these works I also published The Lords of Hay and Hay at War 1914–1918. Both Directories were compiled using records which were reasonably easily available with no deep research. That comes next. Watch this space for further updates. All the books are available from me at alan.j.nicholls@btinternet.com or online from www.Lulu. com or from Broad Street Books. All the proceeds from the books help to finance the research. If anyone has any documents that might help I would be pleased to see them. Article supplied by Alan Nicholls, Hay History Group.

Popular shop gets new owners

Hay’s very own mobile phone store, CommuniKate, has changed hands: the new owners are Dean and Christopher, a father and son team from nearby Crickhowell. Dean originally owned a chain of successful mobile phone stores, which launched in 1993, but he eventually sold the business and tried to retire. During his ownership he employed and personally trained a young Katy Price, who went on to start CommuniKate of Hay. In 2000 Dean’s original phone company was one of the largest independent phone stores in the UK and was voted the second fastest growing company in Wales, which had stiff competition from the other 50,000 Welsh businesses. So what expansion plans does he have for CommuniKate? Dean comments: ”CommuniKate has a very healthy customer base, which we will do everything to maintain and grow, but we are keen to expand into the wider community by offering businesses large and small a personal service, whereby we go out to see them, helping with any problems,

Health & Wellbeing for 2017

We decided to introduce this new feature, to gear people up for the New Year ahead. Many start January with new and exciting changes to their life, so this feature will hopefully help them to find local services and businesses who can help. For those of us who don’t think in this way, me included, perhaps we should. A positive change can only be good, right? No matter how small, no matter how many changes you decide, start here by reading this feature. And be realistic. So I thought it would be a good idea for the team to write down our own New Year resolutions when it comes to our health and wellbeing. Now I realise by them being printed in black and white, we may actually have to stick to them! So here goes: My biggest change is for my mind. For years I have

become obsessed by certain dramas going on in my life. These thoughts eat away at me. I overthink things and just before bedtime this is a really horrible habit. So as I enter 2017 I’m starting with a fresh, positive outlook. I’m going to practise meditation each evening (I’m really not a morning person and with two kids to get ready as well as myself, I’d be lying to say I would add another ’to do’ in my morning routine!). It’s taken something very sad in recent weeks to put life into perspective. You only get one life, live it, who knows how long you’re here for. With farming blood I’m a bit of a penny pincher. With the exclusion of my boot fetish – I have many, many pairs! But I never spend money on my appearance and body. I’ve never dyed my hair as the upkeep would cost to much. Well this year I am going to splash out on a monthly treatment, be it a back massage, a manicure, etc... and first on my list is an Indian head massage! My main aim for 2017 is to make my family and friends smile and laugh. If they’re happy, I’m happy. Article by Lisa Marie Badham

New Year’s Resolutions Hi everyone, I would like to tell you about how my fitness, health and lifestyle will be improving in the New Year.

go for a walk but without her, and it’s not as often as I would like. I like walking but I don’t do steep hills, and I certainly don’t do that stuff they call running!

During the last two years my health and weight has been improving week by week. It’s taken me for ever, and by the time you read this I hope to be at my target weight. Two years ago I joined Slimming World and it’s a great way to control what you eat – and drink! Actually, there is nothing that I’m not allowed, and so far I’ve lost two and a half stone. I know, it’s pathetic how long it’s taken me to lose just that. When I’m at home I stick to the plan, but when I’m away I go back to my old habits. It’s how I roll...

I’d like to start swimming again. I love swimming, but I also like a huge empty pool all to myself! That ain’t gonna happen...

My plan for 2017 is to continue to maintain the weight I have lost. I do not want to put all the weight back on again. I used to walk my dog every day, but sadly we had to have her put to sleep in July last year. She was nearly 15 so she had a great innings. I hope you all enjoy browsing through our new Health & Wellness feature and it gives you the boost you need to enjoy being healthy, well and fit for the new year and onwards. Upwards and onwards, or as I now say, upwards and inwards! Article by Clare Williams I’m bored with the usual New Year’s Resolutions. Eat less chocolate...do more exercise...be more patient with the kids...get all the housework done...find a good work/life balance... it’s all just setting myself up to fail. So this year my resolution is to be kinder to myself. Eat more chocolate (if physically possible); aim for one, very short, walk a day (if I can fit it in between the Ferrero Rocher and the Milk Tray); and every time I snap at my 4-year-old, I’m going to put 20p in a pot towards a back massage (for myself, not her). I promise myself a glass of wine every night at 8pm, to help me sink into a warm haze on the sofa and stop worrying about crumbs spread over the floor, purée smeared on the highchair, piles of unwashed washing, or toys left in the best place to break ankles. So this time next year I hope that although my house will be filthy and my children untidy, I’ll be writing my resolutions down in a happier frame of mind – ideally fatter, and drunk. In other words, nearly everyone can benefit from taking good quality, natural health supplements. For your vision: Beta-carotene, vitamin C, E, zinc, and lutein. For your heart and lungs: Both B and E vitamins, plus antioxidants, work together to complement your diet in supporting a healthy cardiovascular system. Antioxidants, vitamin C and vitamin E, combined with carotenoids, have been shown to help support healthy heart and lung function. For your bones and joints: As you age, your bones inevitably become more fragile. Vitamin C, manganese, magnesium, vitamin D, vitamin K, and silicon work together to help the absorption of calcium, and so help good bone health.

Vision: Key Facts for Drivers Good eyesight is essential for safe driving and poor vision can impair your driving performance. You are responsible for ensuring that your vision meets the specified minimum requirements every time that you drive. If you notice or suspect any change in your vision, do not delay, visit your optometrist or optician. The current vision test for Group 1 (car and motorcycle) drivers in the UK is the ability to read in good light (with the aid of spectacles or contact lenses, if worn) a number plate at: • 20m for vehicles displaying the new-style number plate. • 20.5m for vehicles displaying the old-style number plate. If you are told to wear spectacles or contact lenses for driving, you must wear them at all times when driving. Group 2 (lorry and bus) drivers need to have slightly better vision than car drivers and need a medical assessment of vision to renew their licence. It is a criminal offence to drive with eyesight below the minimum legal standard. Visit your optometrist or optician for more information on vision and driving, including the best type of lenses, frames, sunglasses and lens coatings for driving.

The Wonders of Yoga One of the great wonders of Yoga is how diverse and far reaching it is. Approaches are as varied as the design of a snowflake. Finding Yoga as one enters the liberating years after retirement can be a refreshing experience. As a journey that happens on many levels the inner listener in a Yoga student who is over 60 is often well developed, being quite at home with dropping into a deep meditative space while practising the class. The benefits of Yoga are many and as the body we live in carries a few more years, a greater level of sensitivity is there, a need to look after oneself that extra bit more, listen to the aching joints or the stiff back muscles or that shoulder that seems stuck in one position. As the years progress the need to loosen ourselves, to bring breath and gentle healing movement to our stiff and aching bodies, becomes more necessary. To release, breathe, let go and centre, and in so doing create the right enviroment to grow and gently strengthen ourselves. Vanda Scaravelli, a wonderfulYoga teacher, discoveredYoga in her 40s and went on to teach and grow with it into her late 80s, likening the journey of Yoga to that of nature and how our bodies are like the waves and trees the earth and the stars, through connecting to everything around us – within us we can release the heavier parts of ourselves. Listening to our changing bodies is an opportunity to grow – seeing it as a delicately written poem with a completely individual style to the writing. Yoga as we grow older is a fantastic friend, gently working with our postures, lengthening the spine, gently opening the chest area and allowing the back of the neck to lengthen.Working with awareness of the feet and bringing the weight to the outside edge of each foot, lifting the inside arch and bringing an equal weight to the left and right foot is beneficial for the inside of the knee joint and bringing support to the lower part of the spine, and around the sacrum. Posture, balance and core strength are important as we enter into the third stage of our lives. The freedom of the breath is key to allowing our bodies to unwind, giving room for that shoulder to release or that back muscle to undo. As this process happens the body becomes able to gently approach the poses that feel OK, in a way that is nurturing and caring.

Mobilize! Yoga for over 60s upwards!

I Don’t Like Mondays The festive period is a great time of year to catch up with friends and family but this can lead to a little excessive consumption from time to time... The new year brings the enviable resolutions and one of mine is to eat much better. My diet at the moment isn’t bad but it certainly has room for improvement. A little too much meat consumed. Lunch eaten in a rush. Sugary snacks used for a boost in energy. We’re all (well most of us) guilty of it and some things are easier changed than others. For me, I’m going to be starting with Meatless Mondays (it’s as straightforward as it sounds) and it’s a helpful way to think about how much meat you eat. I already happily don’t eat meat every day but I think adding the simple structure is a helpful tool to make sure I don’t slip into eating more rather than less.

Cutting down on my sugar consumption is also high on my agenda. Unfortunately sugar is hidden (and sometimes not so hidden) in almost everything so it’s not always easy to spot. Under current labelling legislation the amount of sugar needs to be declared in most products packaged for sale but a far easier way to understand the amount of sugar in some everyday items is to make it yourself. With marmalade season just round the corner it’s a helpful exercise to make it from scratch to understand the amount of sugar used. I’m by no means saying we should not eat marmalade but just be aware and moderate. I think Marmalade Mondays might also be on the cards. Article supplied by Derek Glashan of Hay Deli

Winter Blues – Let’s Cruise! This morning, I dragged myself from my nice warm bed, peered outside to see a hard frost, stumbled into the shower and ran it HOT!This kept me warm until I got to the Club (good trick #1 - leave the shower til the last possible minute). I’d promised the girls (good tip#2!), I’d join in this morning’s session so was feeling ‘up for it’ (Boxing Circuits). One of my bestest members came in and I remarked I’d not seen her lately. She said she was ‘out of sorts’ but couldn’t place why. I suggested she might have the Winter Blues (S.A.D), and hopefully she was in exactly the right place to counter it now! I made the session super tough as although it used to be a beginners class they’ve all come on so well they’re now on a par with the evening class (which is well established). So we did a station for 1.5 minutes, and I then blended two weights exercises for two minutes. Til we’d done the lap. After about 20 mins of this, I could SEE we were all on a natural endorphin high – me included! – woop woop! (and the music so helps)! Afterwards I commented to my friend that I hoped it’d helped and this was met with an definite affirmative. I also discussed it all with a fellow health professional who’d done it, and she told me that she deals with so many people suffering

with depression because they are just NOT getting out to socialise anymore. Everyone’s on social media – you FEEL you’re being sociable but it’s really a poor relative. I also know for a fact I NEED GREEN – I have to get outside dog walking my two often, or I’d definitely NOT be the same person - especially as I am exclusively in the studio when I exercise, (as opposed to jogging outside, say). When in Vietnam recently my daughter and I spent a few days to start with in Ho Chi Minh City.We went shopping one night and I kept picking out green clothes ODD! It only occurred to me later - I was getting serious withdrawal symptoms from the Welsh hills! Are you finding yourself getting sluggish over the winter and spending more and more time indoors eating stodgy foods (which fattened us up against the cold many years ago but is really unnecessary now). I implore you – seek out a class near you – any class – get in your shower first – heat up and then just GO! It could easily be your first stop to a brand new winter experience, and we have LONG winters! Happy new year! Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Hay Castle Trust

At the Gwernyfed Christmas Concert on Thursday 1st December we showcased our finest musical performers, ranging from years 7 to 13. There was not only an array of instruments, but also a great mix of festive tunes and classic songs, with each act following on the great standard of the last. The success of the event was a credit to the hard work of Mrs Walker, the music department and all who participated. Everyone who attended was extremely pleased, not only by the mince pies and mulled wine,

Hay Town Council

Hay Markets

Hay-on-Wye Sports Management Committee

Local markets are a vital part of our nation’s high streets and town centres, and Hay’s market offers more than just a great shopping experience. Come to shop, come to socialize, come to enjoy!

Residents of Hay-on-Wye and district and regular readers of Wye Local will be all too aware that Powys County Council has a budget problem. Costs are exceeding income and one of the solutions to remedy this is to transfer some of its services and assets to local community groups, including Hay Town Council.

Alongside your weekly staples, from fresh bread to local fruit and vegetables, and cheeses to fresh fish and meat, come to gossip over a Method Coffee, roasted locally in Bishop’s Frome; indulge in homemade treats from Lucretia with her amazingly colourful hair, coordinated with that week’s outfit; warm up your lunchtime with seasonal soup from Hay Broth or Bill’s filling falafals; or sort supper with beef bourguignon by Emma’s Farmhouse Foods, tarts from Bernie or minted lamb burgers from their own sheep by Weobley Ash. Alongside all this, buy presents, household/garden items, clothing and crafts, from homemade soap by Wild Sage & Co to wooly socks from Jason, and unusual plants by Avril Powell to all manner of unusual curios from Tom or Ian. Shop local and support your local economy.

The latest (but not the last) facilities to be transferred, after months of negotiation, are the sports facilities on Brecon Road. Hay Town Council has assumed responsibility, under licence, pending a full transfer from Powys CC.The transfer includes all the sports facilities, the car park and the childrens play area on Brecon Road. The Town Council will own and run the car park and the play area, while a Sports Management Committee has been set up to run the sports facilities. The Management Committee consists of representatives of the 5 clubs using the facilities, i.e. the junior football club, Hay St. Marys FC, Hay Cricket Club, the Bowling Club and the Tennis Club,

plus four members of the Town Council. The Town Council will pay a substantial contribution towards the running costs of the sports facilities, but significant funds must be raised by the Sports Management Committee to make the facilities viable. The transfer will create challenges and opportunities for these facilities which, with the exception of the Bowls Club, have suffered from underinvestment. The Town Council has agreed that the Management Committee may raise funds for the site which could include, for example, a visitor car park during the festival. However, much more needs to be done by way of income generation to meet running costs. The aim is to bring these facilities up to date and, once the transfer is complete, create an asset that can be developed for the benefit of the whole town – an opportunity the town can be proud of. U3A Hay U3A Hay has a real cracker of a day planned for the first meeting of the New Year! Who doesn’t have a view on the UK’s overseas aid budget? Should it be ring-fenced? Is it value for money? Why does the UK give Overseas Aid anyway? These much-debated

(and sometimes controversial) questions and more will be answered by John Winter at the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 17th January at 10.30am, in his presentation ‘Why Give Overseas Aid?’ After lunch, the Music-All interest group will present the DVD of ‘Still Life at the Penguin Café’, David Bintley’s 1988 ballet performed by the Royal Ballet with the Penguin Café Orchestra. The orchestra explores the relative freedom of ethnic music, while the ballet features extinct and endangered species from around the world. A truly international day! We meet in the Music Room at the Baskerville Hall Hotel in Clyro, with coffee from 10am. Hope to see you there! The entrance fee is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. For further information, phone Tricia Wordley on 01497 821595. Timbuktu 2017: the 10th anniversary of the twinning of Hay and Timbuktu. During that time people in Hay have made a powerful impact in northern Mali before, during and since the Islamist conflict. H2T thanks all who have participated and given generously. Schools in Timbuktu join local schools enabling students to learn about life in contrasting environments. Malian girls receive the support and equipment they need to complete the Second Cycle School through H2T funded projects. The impact of this support makes a huge difference to the lives of girls, not only enabling them to access education but preparing them to take responsibility for themselves, their future families and communities through active involvement in decision making. Many families cannot afford to send girls to school and donations from Hay make an enormous, long lasting difference in Timbuktu. To get involved in sponsoring a girl in part or exclusively contact H2T at info@ hay2timbuktu.org.uk. The medics continue projects in three clinics and are grateful for local support at the recent Out of Africa fundraising event. Clinics received funds from Medics4Timbuktu to purchase basic equipment and medical supplies and medics made a donation to Faces, a non profit making organization, to assist in the building of a medical centre in the Sahara Desert to enable nomadic people to access medical care. 2017 promises more for Hay and Timbuktu.

Winter Crafting Lolly Stick Snowmen These cheerful snowman make a lovely seasonal bookmark. Perhaps the kids could make them as gifts, signing their name and the year on the back? You will need: A pack of wooden lolly sticks, white paint and black pen, scraps of coloured card and/or fabric, pieces of thin ribbon, small buttons and glue Instructions:

Bird Cake Make sure that the birds stay fed and happy this winter by making them these bird cakes, and attract some interesting wildlife into your garden. You will need: Bacon fat, birdseed, various shaped biscuit cutters or small cake molds, plastic

Paint a stick white and leave to dry. With the black pen draw on some dots for eyes and mouth. Cut out a hat from coloured card or fabric and a carrot nose from orange card and glue on. Stick the buttons down Mr Snowman’s front. Finally, tie a piece of ribbon around his neck as a scarf and stick in place with a spot of glue!

drinking straws and string Instructions: Melt the fat gently and mix with the birdseed (this should be done by an adult or with close adult supervision). Leave to cool slightly, then pack the mixture into the biscuit cutters or cake molds, on a baking tray. Cut up the straws into short lengths, and poke one short straw into the centre of each ‘cake’. Leave to cool. Once the cakes are set firm, turn them out of the cutters/tins and thread a length of string through the straw, so that you have a few inches of string sticking out either side of the cakes. Tie one side of the string around the cakes to secure them, and then use the remaining string to hang the cakes on trees or feeders in your garden for the birds to enjoy.

Choose Pharmacy: Do you need to see a doctor today?

As all NHS services are struggling under an increased workload, please access the services you need through the most appropriate provider. Powys LHB are rolling out a new Pharmacy Service. Previously, if you had a “minor ailment”, you could either access the GP for a prescription, or purchase a product at the local pharmacy.

The new service will allow patients who are registered with a Welsh GP surgery to obtain advice and treatment for a range of common conditions on the NHS – directly from your local Pharmacy.

The service will require patients to register for that episode of care (don’t worry, you can move your registration elsewhere if needed, and this won’t affect the registration for GP services with your Surgery). Patients will need to have a confidential consultation with the Pharmacist who will check the symptoms and supply advice on managing the problem. If a medicine is needed, and it is appropriate to supply one, the NHS will cover the cost. If treatment isn’t appropriate, or available on the NHS, patients will be provided with appropriate self care advice and may be referred to another health care provider. So, if you think it’s: indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea, piles, hay fever, head lice, teething, nappy rash, colic, chicken pox, threadworms, sore throat, athlete’s foot, conjunctivitis, mouth ulcers, cold sores, acne, dermatitis, verruca, back pain, in growing toenails, vaginal thrush, oral thrush or scabies... Instead of taking up GP time, come to the Pharmacy. Our other NHS funded services include: support to stop smoking, medicines use review (getting the best out of your medicines), Discharge Medicines Review (if you have recently had hospital treatment, we can help you understand what you have been prescribed and make sure any changes or problems are addressed and resolved), supply and disposal of sharps boxes and disposal of unwanted medicines, and seasonal ‘flu vaccination.
