Welcome to the February issue of your community magazine. Just before Christmas, which seems so long ago now, my team and I were all sat around enjoying a great festive feast. We start talking work! Discussing new features for our monthly magazines. One topic was how many of us have friends who may be widowed, divorced or single, and wouldn’t it be great if we could be the link to these people meeting up? Social media works well but if you’re from a generation that didn’t grow up with internet dating and the more recent Tinder, the more traditional way of pen to paper would be the preferred option. Please turn to page 31 to see how we’d like to make these connections. Please don’t feel alone; rest assured there are many local people in our area that are looking for companionship, meeting up with people with similar interests. Do encourage your friends and family to take part. New businesses join us this month. The Muddy Geography Company, page 2. RHM Firewood & Tree Services, page 5. Shared Reading, page 6. Hair2B Freelance Stylist, page 10. MJH Tiling & Construction, page 32. As well as our regular features, this month we have various one-off articles that may be of interest: The Swan at Hay reopens after refurbishment, page 17; WyePads to the rescue, page 23; For & Against: Poultry Units in Clyro, page 32; and Talgarth Mill is looking for directors and volunteers, page 35. Don’t forget our local landscape photography competition is in full swing. You have until the end of March to send us your entries. We live in a beautiful part of the world. We really are blessed. A New Year – A New Business
Kirsty Williams
When we - or a friend or member of our family get ill, we want to be sure that they have access to the latest and most effective medicines, regardless of where people live. This is an issue I have been campaigning on for a number of years. So I am very pleased to say that the Welsh Government is bringing forward an £80 million “New Treatments Fund”. The money will help ensure that Welsh health boards to make all new medicines recommended by National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group (AWMSG) available faster and more consistently across Wales.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have been calling for a fund like this for a number of years and a similar scheme formed part of our 2016 election manifesto, so I am very pleased one is now being brought forward. Another recent announcement that may be of interest to readers is the new £40 million small grants scheme for farmers. The scheme, which has been developed with farmers unions, will provide financial support of up to £12,000 at a 40% grant rate over a fouryear period. Farmers across Wales will be able to invest in around 80 items linked to: Stock handling equipment, animal health, genetics and performance, crop management, energy efficiency and IT. My party and I are passionate about protecting our proud farming tradition in order to safeguard food security, look after the landscape and natural environment. That is why the introduction of this scheme was a condition of me accepting the invitation to join the government. The scheme is due to open in April and I would urge all farmers in Brecon and Radnorshire to take a look at the scheme to see if it could help their business. If you would like to discuss these, or any other, issues with me, please contact me at Kirsty.williams@ assembly.wales, or call my office on 01874 625 739.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s column, we are having a first taste of proper winter weather, although the snow has not so far lived up to the blizzard warnings of recent days. The early weeks of 2017 have already had their lighter and darker moments and I shall reflect briefly upon them. In the run up to the New Year, I was contacted by BBC Points West, following the violent death of Ethiopian asylum seeker Mohammed Abduresek in a South Gloucestershire village over Christmas. Mohammed – or Mo as he was known – had taken part in several of the respite days organised by Hay Brecon Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTS4R), including the memorable football match at Westfields last July, between Talgarth Town and the Unity in Diversity team from Swansea. In the context of their investigation, Avon and Somerset Police became aware that our community had shown generosity and kindness to Mo, whose early years had been scarred by turbulence and war. A suspect has since been charged with his murder. Our community also came together to support the search operation for missing jogger David Skeen, who moved to our area from Bristol before Christmas and whose disappearance was reported on 3rd January. The sterling efforts of both Brecon and Longtown Mountain Rescue teams, who supported Dyfed-Powys Police in the search, combined with local residents who volunteered to assist, helped the case to be resolved and Mr Skeen’s body to be recovered. We express our sincere condolences to Mr Skeen’s family and friends on their loss, at this difficult time. The first week of January also marked a very happy local event, namely the 75th Wedding Anniversary of Pryce and Arvona Lewis of Bronllys. At the invitation of their daughter-in-law, Barbara Lewis of Bronllys Road, it was a pleasure for Ria and me to pay a visit to them on the happy day. It was wonderful to hear their tales of the challenges they faced getting married in the winter of 1942, in wartime South Wales – and to congratulate them on
their remarkable milestone. Talgarth has also had a share of good news in recent weeks, with the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority granting planning consent for the new Talgarth/Bronllys Primary School on Hay Road just before Christmas. At the time of writing, the start date for the build phase is to be announced. Whilst it has taken a long time to reach this point, an investment of almost £5,000,000 in our community is highly significant, especially when pressure on public finance is so acute. The other boost that we have received comes from the private sector, with the Hay Veterinary Group’s decision to open a branch practice in Talgarth. This is the first time in many decades that there has been a veterinary presence in Talgarth – and they are most welcome. Meanwhile, many readers will have noticed that refurbishment work continues apace on the former Nat West Bank building on Talgarth Square. Whilst the decision by RBS in 2014 to close the branch was regrettable, banks in other local towns such as Crickhowell and Hay-on-Wye are also suffering a similar fate. The fact that the Wye and Usk Foundation, an environmental charity that first relocated to Talgarth in 2014, is to have its home there is particularly appropriate. The charity does a huge amount of work to enhance the environment of rivers in our part of Wales and helps to develop angling, which is a much loved pastime as well as bringing millions of pounds into the rural economy. Furthermore, the Foundation also fosters partnership with farmers and landowners to manage river catchments, so as to reduce flood risk. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me on: 07703 112 113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, via Twitter @WmPowell2017 or Facebook @WilliamPowellLD. My next advice surgery is on Friday 3rd February from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre – no appointment is necessary. Best wishes William

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Over the last twenty years cities such as Cardiff, Swansea and Newport have received hundreds of millions in investment from the Welsh Government. The Valleys have received substantial grants and funding to revitalise their transport network and town centres. But what about rural Wales? Rural towns across my constituency of Brecon and Radnorshire have seen drastic changes in recent years. The rise of online shopping, investment in towns such as Hereford and Merthyr has attracted locals to shop there instead of their local towns. And what investment are we receiving from the Welsh Government? Very little. But it does not have to be this way, our towns do not have to suffer from continual economic stagnation. I will continue to push for a better deal for our rural communities in parliament and my Conservative Assembly Members will push for the Welsh Government to increase investment in rural Wales, as they have done in their Labour voting heartlands over the last twenty years. There are many things that we can all do in order to address the issues our rural communities face. There are many rural communities in Brecon and Radnorshire who have a small voice, but if we can work together then the louder our voice will be. I would encourage anyone who feels they have the time and passion to get involved at a local level, this could be joining your local Chamber ofTrade. The Brecon chamber of trade is a fine example, they relaunched in 2016 and are campaigning on various local issues to improve Brecon town centre and the conditions for workers in the town. Alternatively individuals could stand for local council, or run a local community group/charity. All of these organisations have a major impact on how our communities are run, and many of them consist of the similar people with the same stale, unambitious ideas for our committees for decades. We need ambitious, talented individuals who care about our community to roll their sleeves up and get involved. If you do wish to get involved then please do! My office is open to you to provide support or advice. Feel free to contact me at – chris.davies.mp@parliament.uk

Get to really know... Louise Davies I moved to the area in 2012 after many years attending the Hay Festival. I love living here and have met some wonderful people – I love the eclectic mix of people that Hay attracts, the beautiful landscape and that there’s a myriad of groups, events and activities to get involved with. Place of birth? Yeovil, Somerset. Where do you live now? Begwyns Bluff, Clyro. Marital status? Married to Andrew. Occupation? Co-owner of Eighteen Rabbit Fair Trade and I’ve just started a new job as Head of Campaigns & Policy for the Vegan Society. Children? None. Pets? Two adorable cats, The Smiths: Robert and Patti. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Pigeon Street. I always wanted to be Long Distance Clara but anyone who’s witnessed my driving will know that’s an impossible dream. Are you a collector of anything? I collect handkerchief vases from the 1950s to the 1970s. The Alley and Hay Loft keep my collection nicely topped up! Two lessons life has taught you? The power of yes and no. Take risks and grasp opportunities, but equally simply say no if you don’t fancy doing something, no is no big deal! What makes you grumpy? At the moment I’m unhappy about the proposed intensive poultry farm being planned in Clyro. Bad for the environment, local residents and businesses and, of course, for the animals. Teenage crush? I doubt this will mean much to many readers, but Loz from 1990s indie heroes Kingmaker. I am starting a campaign to get them to reform as part of Hull’s City of Culture... You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? I’d love to be able to invest in some fair trade projects (which may involve an elongated stay in Central or South America!). I’d also like to support ethical entrepreneurs, organisations and
Green politicians who are working to create a more equal society. What book would you recommend to others? Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood. She creates a powerful dystopian future, which has plenty of lessons for us about climate change, exploitation and globalisation. Best present ever received? My wonderful Riley Kestrel classic car, that I had for my 17th birthday (and again for my 21st when it needed rebuilding!). If only I’d been within range of Ashbrook Garage it might still be on the road. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I’d love to go to Cambodia to meet some of Eighteen Rabbit’s artisan workers. We’ve been emailing for years and it would be great to see them in person. What’s your favourite song of all time? Can I have two please?! ‘If I Can Dream’ by Elvis Presley and ‘Lazy Line Painter Jane’ by Belle & Sebastian. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? If there’s no dodgy indie club playing Suede and Shed Seven, then it’s a few drinks in Tomatitos or the Blue Boar with friends. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Lunch at the Globe, and a walk on the Begwyns. Have any hidden talents? I am (still after 25 years) learning to play the guitar but it’s taking a long time – I’ve just about mastered ‘Let It Be’. What would be your dream job? First Green Prime Minister! What have you done today to make you feel proud? Tried to raise awareness of environmental and social inequalities, and to be a voice for those without one. Sum yourself up in five words: Hopeful, determined, compassionate, probably naïve!

The Swan at Hay The Swan at Hay is set to open following a complete refurbishment on Thursday 2nd February. The Grade II listed Georgian building and former coaching inn will launch with 19 bedrooms, a restaurant, bar and wedding and events hall. The restaurant and bar will be open daily for lunch and dinner. The Head Chef at The Swan at Hay is Jerry Adam whose most recent role was at Michelin-starred Ynyshir in Wales. Jerry also worked at The Swan at Hay’s sister hotel Llangoed Hall for three years, under head chef Nick Brodie. Prior to that Jerry spent time at other Michelin-starred destinations including the Bath Priory. Jerry is currently finalising his menus for the 30 cover restaurant and 25 cover bar and this spring a herb kitchen garden will also be unveiled. The menus will reflect a modern approach and Jerry will offer seasonal Welsh dishes using local produce. Jerry is already working with a selection of local Welsh suppliers. The refurbishment has included external works to the building including a new roof and the entire refurbishment of the interior with totally redesigned bedrooms and bathrooms and transformed public areas including the street-facing restaurant and separate bar area. The Swan at Hay is licensed to hold civil ceremonies and the hotel can cater for up to 120 guests.
at Hay and he is currently overseeing the final phase of the refurbishment. Ronan has vast experience of the hospitality industry across the UK including five years at the five-star Celtic Manor Resort where he relaunched and rebranded their 3 AA Rosette restaurant. Ronan comments: “We are in our final phase of a big refurbishment programme which has lasted over a year and we are very excited about our imminent launch. We have invested across the property and also appointed a rising star as Head Chef. We have worked with many local organisations and individuals, helping to drive the local economy. I look forward to a successful 2017 and to attracting even more visitors to the wonderful town of Hay-onWye in Wales, year-round.” New website coming soon: www.swanathay.com. Telephone: 01497 821 188.
With local partnerships in mind, The Swan at Hay has partnered with Myddfai Trading Company for the bathroom toiletries. Myddfai is a social enterprise working with challenged adults, helping them achieve more. The company offers innovative and environmentally friendly products made in Wales, all Paraben and cruelty free. The artwork at the hotel was purchased from one of Wales’s best galleries – The Lion Street Gallery, also located in Hay-on-Wye. The gallery mainly promotes artists who work in Wales and the Borders. All of the crockery has been handmade bespoke for The Swan at Hay in Hay-on-Wye by Pauline Patterson. The hotel’s coffee supplier, also based in Hay-onWye, is Black Mountain Roast who offer small batch coffee, fresh from Wales. Ronan Hunter is the General Manager at The Swan

Keep Calm and Sleep Do you struggle to get to sleep? Is the quality of your slumber as good as it could be? Are you waking refreshed or dragging yourself out of bed at half tilt?! Sleep interests me as a Personal Trainer because the LACK of it has so many implications for my clients. We did a workshop recently with CRUSH IT, and nearly all of us needed to improve this important aspect of life! If they’re eating right (not too many refined carbs, sugar or alcohol), yet present with a bloated tum they can’t shift, ‘sleepy’ questions would be my next port of call! It is now well established: A shortened sleep time is associated with decreases in leptin and elevations in Ghrelin. A disaster as hormone Ghrelin stimulates hunger and leptin signals satiety to the brain, (and suppresses appetite). Worse: lack of sleep yields cravings for high-carbohydrate foods – as we’re flagging and they give us access to quick, but short lived energy. As we also know: being tired impairs judgement so that isn’t going to help either! You can see why managing sleep should be an important consideration of any fat loss programme. As always with everything we do, we should look to our ancient hunter gatherer ancestors for inspiration. We were sophisticated enough back then to
relate to what we are now, yet not still swinging off trees. Still ‘raw’, earthy and working with circadian harmony: we hunted by day, ate our fill, sat around a fire by night (don’t the best parties always end up around a bonfire?!), then slept under the stars, the earth cooling as night fell. Morning time we’d wake to a rising sun (and temperature) with the light slowly increasing, and start the day again. It’s how far we deviate from this natural, and evolutionary process that determines how deep and effective our sleep will be. Your bedroom is your sanctuary in this respect, so keep it calm and unstimulating. Drop the temperature before you go to bed. Open a window. Invest in the best mattress you can afford, and avoid ‘blue screens’ (laptop, smart phones, etc). Avoiding caffeine is obvious but if you’re over 50, avoid from midday! (We cannot deal with caffeine as well as when younger). The need for 8 hours is a myth. If you’d like the formula to work out how much sleep YOU need as an individual, as well as my full fact sheet, on this complex subject, please email me on: mizzfit@mail.com. Local Talent: Richard Greatrex The story can be in a single glimpsed image, it can be in a combined collage of images or in a whole series of photographs. I try to bring the things I learnt from filmmaking into taking photographs.
Richard Greatrex was a cinematographer for over 30 years. He is a BAFTA winner, a four times nominee, and was nominated for an Oscar in 1999 for his work on Shakespeare in Love. Type of artist? Photographer. Range? If it exists and it has a story, I will photograph it. Price range? Let’s talk. How long have you been an artist? Still waiting. Where did you train or gain experience? I was a film cameraman for 30 years. Artist statement: I like to think of myself as a storyteller with images. My years as film cameraman taught me many things. It taught me a great deal about the technical. It taught me a great deal about framing, a sense of light and dark, a feeling of depth and the wonders of colour. But...film is nothing without a good story... and I think of that every time I take a photograph.

WyePads to the rescue! Got an iPad? How are you getting on with it? Mastered the basics but lack the confidence to do more? Or are you feeling all at sea – perhaps terrified to use it? Alison Matthews has been helping people use computers for over 30 years and her sell-out 2016 iPad courses were a huge success. “To see people who’ve never used a computer before send and receive their first email is incredibly rewarding,” she says. “People loved the slow, relaxed pace of the classes, and the weekly handouts mean they go home with all the details of what was covered.” Three new classes start the week beginning Monday 13th February. Total Beginners, for those who’ve never used a computer before; Beginners Plus, for those familiar with email and the internet; and Build on the Basics, for those who want to get a bit more from their iPad.

The Reunion War involves stories which reflect the many sides of human nature and behaviour including heroism, brutality, sorrow and grief; sometimes great humanity and also, sometimes, stories which contain an uncanny coincidence. The following is one such story that happened as a consequence of WW1 (J. Fawke, Talgarth’s War:1914– 1919, forthcoming). Whilst serving in Germany Thomas Crane of Talgarth had been involved in the capture of a number of German soldiers, but he himself was captured in the spring of 1918. Now he was a prisoner-of-war. When the cessation of hostilities was declared on 11th November 1918 Thomas was one of the earliest soldiers to return home. As Thomas travelled home in December 1918, his thoughts must have been filled with many and mixed emotions as the train approached his home town of Talgarth. However, imagine Thomas’s surprise when, as he alighted the train, two of the German prisoners-of-war who were loading timber onto the train at Talgarth Station looked up and recognised Thomas. They walked over and greeted Thomas, introducing themselves, explaining that he had been their captor. The German prisoners-of-war must have been based at Tregunter Park, Talgarth, which was used as a prisoner-ofwar camp during the First World War. The reunion must have filled each man with different emotions, but at least each was alive and each had a future to look forward to, unlike many of their friends and comrades. Those futures would include the Great Depression and a second world war in only 21 years time. Article supplied by Alan Lovell, Talgarth & District Historical Society.

For & Against: Poultry Units in Clyro The Case ‘For’ by J R Lloyd & Son J R Lloyd & Son have submitted the planning application for the fertile egg unit at Lower House Farm Clyro as part of their plans to maintain a sustainable farming business for future farming generations. Declining returns from more traditional enterprises and the decline of subsidy regimes mean that farmers have to consider other enterprises in which to invest that are going to give regular positive returns enabling them to maintain more traditional enterprise such as beef and sheep which are fundamental to the fabric of the countryside. The proposed egg unit is part of the supply chain into the broiler industry and will operate on an annual cycle that will enable the turnaround period to be timed to minimise any possible impact on any surrounding businesses. The use of best available technology and management techniques combined with a purpose designed landscaping scheme will mean that the proposal from J R Lloyd & Son will have very minimal impact on the surrounding area which is in their interests as much as any other business that operates in the area.
4. EFFECT ON OTHER BUSINESSES Black Mountain View caravan park and other holiday lets fall within a mile radius of the proposed site – who wants to holiday near a chicken farm? 5. NOISE 24/7 extractor fans, transport. Please sign our petition on 38degrees.org.uk (Cluckoff) and like the Cluck-off Facebook page for updates.

The Case ‘Against’ by the Cluck-Off Campaign Group Cluck-Off Campaign Group (set up by Clyro & Bronydd residents) is raising awareness about the following (regarding the proposed poultry units): 1. SMELL Try and think of a similar-sized intensive farming unit that you drive past without noticing! 2. HIGHWAYS Twice-weekly egg collections by 7.5T–16T trucks will inevitably cause problems when waiting, turning and exiting from the proposed site onto the A438 (a fast, busy stretch of main road where there have been fatalities within recent years). 3.HEALTH & SAFETY The impact of ammonia rain on surrounding trees and wildlife is an unknown quantity. The site is close to the River Wye, a SSSI (site of special scientific interest).

Felin Talgarth Mill is looking for directors and volunteers Felin Talgarth Mill was restored back into a fully working watermill in 2011, with the support of the owner of the Mill, the local community and The Big Lottery Fund. The goal of the restoration was to provide support for regeneration in the local area, support tourism and other local businesses, provide employment opportunities and create a space that could promote education, training and skills development. During the first five years of operation we have seen over 38,000 visitors take a tour of the Mill and learn about its history and place in the rural community. A critically acclaimed café, The Bakers’ Table, offers high quality teas, coffees, cakes and lunches, sourcing produce from local providers. A vibrant Craft Shop is a showcase for 36 local makers, knitters, felters, painters and potters. Primary and secondary school children have enjoyed bespoke visits to the Mill, supporting their Key Stage learning goals – better than Pokémon was the verdict from one group! We want to continue developing the Mill to do more for the community, employment, education and regeneration. Over the next five years we are looking to build out our education programmes for primary and secondary schools, expand the use of the Mill facilities for creative talent and businesses, develop new ways to make the Mill a hub for learning and skills development, expand flour distribution to a broader base of customers and continue to increase the number of visitors coming to Talgarth and the surrounding area. We would encourage anyone who would like to help make a contribution to this community enterprise to get in touch!
Come and join the volunteers and directors at Felin Talgarth Mill – and help guide and build this community enterprise for the future. We have a strong and committed team of volunteers who support the running of the Mill and we are keen to expand that group. We are looking for: • Directors – join our team of Directors to help support and guide the development of Felin Talgarth Mill. We are particularly keen to attract people with a background or interest in education, regeneration and rural crafts and food production. • Volunteers – join our team of guides, millers, flour producers, educators and gardeners, and be part of a vibrant, committed and supportive group, working to keep the Mill at the heart of the community.
If you would like to find out more about what we do and how you might get involved then please contact Sarah Andrews on sarah@talgarthmill.com or telephone 01874 711 352. Talgarth Mill LD3 0BW www.facebook.com/felintalgarthmill www.talgarthmill.com

they used to or who seem to be forgetting things more often than they did. Also if you are caring for someone, you might like to come along and have a chat with other people in a similar situation. We will be offering a light lunch, some fun activities, a cup of tea and a chat. We have received funding from a new charity called Dementia Matters in Powys who will fund us for the next 3 months and possibly beyond to begin this new venture. We are also very grateful for the support of Clyro Community Council and Clyro Village Hall Committee. We will continue to meet at Cusop Hall on the first Monday of the month at 2.30pm. If you are interested in either visiting the café or if you know someone who might be, please contact Trish Richardson on 01497 821 381. We are looking for volunteers to help us at Clyro so if you can spare a few hours a month to help please contact Trish.
U3A Hay Cheers! At the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 21st February starting at 10.30am, we will be exploring ‘The History of Herefordshire Cider Making’. Cider and perry making have been a vital part of the local agricultural economy for centuries, and this continues today. To help us fully understand the processes involved, Pips Cider of Dorstone are kindly donating samples to accompany Penny’s presentation. It should be an interesting and tasty morning! At 1.30pm, after lunch, we will continue the theme by showing the DVD of Cider with Rosie, the 1999 film of Laurie Lee’s book, directed by Charles Beeson, and starring Juliet Stevenson, Dashiell Reece and Joe Roberts. We meet in the lovely Music Room at the Baskerville Hall Hotel in Clyro, with coffee from 10am. Hope to see you there! The entrance fee is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. For further information, phone Tricia Wordley on 01497 821 595.

Protecting wildlife for the future
returns. Mid February is a better time to see the flowering parts of these common woodland trees. The familiar catkins come out in abundance a little earlier than the tiny female flowers which catch pollen brought to them on the wind. Look carefully at buds for the red bits. The picture is from Llandefaelog Wood Nature Reserve.
Corylus avellana Hazel We saw a female Hazel flower during the New Year Plant Hunt on 4th January – but it was only just poking out the red styles. There were more male, actively pollen shedding, catkins so the species qualified for being recorded as flowering in the hunt
There is another opportunity to learn about hedgelaying at Cae Pwll y Bo Reserve on the 21st and on the 24th there are two events in different parts of the county. The Tree ID walk at Ystradfawr reserve in Ystradgynlais is a great opportunity to learn how to identify tress from buds and bark in the winter. The Wildlife Watch Family Event in Hay at the opposite end of the county includes craft activities and a nature walk. For more detail and who to contact for all these events go online to bit. ly/bwtevents. John Crellin
