This month is the deadline for our annual photography competition. We’ve received some superb entries but – without wanting to sound greedy – we want more! Twelve of the best images will appear in our annual Local Landscapes Calendar, and we want to represent the Brecon Beacons National Park the best we can. To do that we need keen photographers to send us their images. Raid your archives. Get out with your camera this month. See page 54 for more details and how to enter. Good luck. Last month we introduced a new feature – the Companionship for the 50+ page. When we went to print I was a tad nervous. What if it was a huge flop and no one wrote in? As always, mum was there to reassure me: “You won’t know unless you try”. Such a simple saying and oh, so true. As luck would have it people did write to us. Proof that we are offering something new and needed for our readers. Make 2017 a social year, a year to get out and meet new people with similar interests. See pages 30 & 31. Spoil your mothers this March: we’ve got some dining and gift ideas, so there really are no excuses. Thank you to my own mum for always being there. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x

News from Kirsty Williams

Full time sales assistant required

Jobs and the economy is one of my top priorities for 2017. People I speak to are concerned about empty business properties and the need to regenerate our high streets. I am very pleased the Welsh Government has recently announced a £10 million fund to help bring empty, underused sites and shops in town centres back into use. The money is being allocated to twelve areas of Wales, including Powys. As well as making town centres more attractive places to live this scheme will encourage investment into these areas and help support the local economy. Parking is another issue that is frequently raised with me by local traders. It is an issue my Welsh Liberal Democrats colleagues on Powys County Council (PCC) James Gibson Watt, Gareth Ratcliffe and William Powell have been campaigning on for some time. This year’s Welsh Government budget contained a commitment for a £3 million scheme to allow councils to provide free parking for town centres. I hope PCC make the most of this scheme when the money becomes available, as it could provide a real boost to our high streets. In other news, at the end of January I attended a public meeting on the future of the library in Hay. It was a really impressive turnout from HOWLS – Hay-on-Wye Library Supporters. As the daughter of a librarian, I fully understand the vital role the library plays in a cultural, fair and equal society. We need Powys County Council to engage with the community and the town council, to find a solution meeting the needs of library users. I am always interested to hear local residents’ views on how we could improve our communities, if you have any thoughts, please get in touch. You can email me at Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales, or call my office on 01874 625 739.

Applicants should be confident in communicating with the public and show good customer service skills. You will also need to be physically fit. Experience of retail sales, cash handling and stock management preferred but not essential. Competitive rates of pay. Hours to be discussed, which may include Saturdays. Send CV & cover letter to: info@joneshomehardware.co.uk Or by post: Jones Home Hardware, 11/12 Castle Street, Hay HR3 5DF Closing date for applications: Saturday 4th March 2017

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth At the time of writing, we have been experiencing some lovely winter sun, frosty mornings, and spells of fog more reminiscent of autumn. The subsidence which caused long term traffic lights on the A479 at Pengenffordd has now been resolved. I would like to thank local residents for their patience and understanding in using the minor road diversions during the road closure. While the works were a long time in the planning phase, it is good that they have at last been completed – and to such a high standard. I recently joined members of Talgarth & District Regeneration Group on a litter pick from the Lower Genffordd Bends to Whitelow Farm, only made possible by the temporary road closure. It was a surprisingly enjoyable Sunday afternoon and we gathered 12 full sacks of litter, which had built up over the months and years. It is just regrettable that our fellow citizens feel at liberty to throw plastic bottles, cans and other detritus out of their vehicles to litter our beautiful environment. I believe there should be more draconian fines to combat this form of anti social behaviour. It is also my view that the case for reinstating a deposit return scheme, as operated by Corona in the 1960s and 70s, is worth exploring again in the twenty first century. There have been some sobering budget seminars at County Hall over recent months, with senior council officers and councillors weighing up the extent of savings required by the authority’s overall financial plight. The difficulty of the financial situation is reflected once again in a tight settlement from Welsh Government. This is being severely exacerbated by the anticipated rise in inflation, triggered by the Brexit vote. I am just glad that our Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Kirsty Williams, was able to persuade Welsh Finance Minister, Prof Mark Drakeford AM, of the merits of a funding floor, to help protect the services needed by the most vulnerable in our community. Whilst the County Council’s financial position remains challenging in the coming year, I am pleased

that the Cabinet Member for Libraries, Cllr Graham Brown, has granted my request for a meeting to discuss safeguarding the future of Talgarth Library, during the construction phase of our new community primary school on Hay Road, Ysgol Y Mynydd Du. I am also greatly looking forward to the forthcoming gig in Talgarth Library on Friday 10th March from 6pm. Juulie Rousseau from Montreal, Canada, will be joining virtuoso Anglo-Italian Stef Giaccone in an evening inspired by the musical genius of the late Leonard Cohen. It will also be a valuable opportunity for friends of Talgarth Library to assist with awareness and fund raising. Wales’ early performances in this year’s Six Nations Rugby have been tantalising, especially when victory was snatched by England last Saturday, after a competitive game. In a matter of days, we will unite as a nation to mark the Festival of our Patron Saint, St David or Dewi Sant. At these local events, as well as at the Principality Stadium, I am sure that we will be singing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau with gusto, whilst remembering the vital importance of good sportsmanship. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk on facebook: @WilliamPowellLD or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is being held jointly with Kirsty Williams AM on Friday 3rd March from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. On this occasion, due to unprecedented demand, please call the Welsh Liberal Democrat office on 01874 625 739 if you wish to make an appointment. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue which may be troubling you. Best wishes William

I am over the moon that the Brecon Jazz festival will be going ahead once again this summer. A report conducted by Independent music consultant Nod Knowles, which was commissioned by Brecon Town Council, came to the conclusion that the festival had “reached the end of its life”. Many options have been discussed to rescue the Brecon Jazz Festival which has seen a demise in recent years. The Brecon Jazz festival is a much loved and well known event, not just in Brecon and Radnorshire, but across the UK. I am very pleased the Jazz will go ahead this year because it is a vital source of income for many businesses in Brecon; many of whom rely on the festival to see them through quieter periods of the year. The festival is looking to make changes and I believe it must do so to survive. In the past few years the Brecon Fringe Festival has become a popular event and if this were to properly combine with the Jazz Festival it could help guarantee the festival’s future. I believe there is huge scope for an expansion in the cultural element of the festival, it would be great to see speakers from across the globe attending and many more businesses having stalls around town throughout the weekend. We should aim to make the Jazz weekend an event open to all, with something for everyone. Attracting food, music and culture lovers from all over the world. I look forward to attending personally and enjoying the festival like atmosphere in Brecon on the Jazz weekend!

Hay Chamber Music Festival On Friday at St Mary’s Church the Fitzwilliam String Quartet, the Festival’s resident quartet, made up of violinists Lucy Russell and Marcus Barcham Stevens, viola player Alan George and cellist Sally Pendlebury, perform alongside the Dragonfly Trio of Moray Welsh, Marcia Crayford and Susie Mészáros. They have chosen a programme of Bruckner, Brahms and Schubert followed by a post-concert discussion with the musicians.

Hay Chamber Music Festival, now in its third year, brings a weekend of world class music-making to some of Hay-on-Wye’s favourite venues, Richard Booth’s Bookshop on Lion Street and St Mary’s Church, between Friday 24 March and Sunday 26 March 2017.

On Saturday evening, there is a pre-concert supper (booking essential) and concert at Richard Booth’s Bookshop with the Fitzwilliam Quartet playing Bach, Alan Mills, Glazunov and Schubert. On Sunday afternoon, the Fitzwilliam Quartet and Sinfonia Cymru perform Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Symphony No 29 and Haydn’s famous Farewell Symphony No 45 at St Mary’s Church. Get a grip with chips Not long ago, I was in the Con Club eating a prawn salad with a side of chips (the Con easily do the best chips in town!), and a Gym member in there said “Oh! You do chips!!” Howdee – oh yes I do! Once, in the Blue Boar, after a long (superb) Sunday lunch and spotting my black coffee and an empty wine glass (which had had a large Pinot Grigio in it), a chap walked by and mischievously said “call yourself a Personal Trainer?!”. My life! Well yes I DO call myself a Personal Trainer and here’s my stance on all this: Somewhere between clean eating (which THANK THE LORD is ‘trending’ now), and walking around forgetting you have a BODY underneath your chin which needs some mindful concern…is a place where you can have fun, relax, and yes, eat some naughty stuff once in a while, so long as (and this is a biggie) you know your enemies, and make the right decisions MOST of the time (and one of those decisions might be to chill and have some chips!). You see: if you deny yourself all of life’s pleasures you’re on a constant roller coaster of what you’ll perceive as failure and success, berating yourself for your ‘lack of will power’, which is a false concept anyway; pitting long term rewards against short term rewards, you’ll definitely

fall off that wagon sooner or later (yo-yo anyone?). Also know this; there really is NO SHORT TERM MAGIC BULLET, we are in it for the long haul – get used to that, and simply embrace looking after you! You ARE worth it! However: you’ll get the absolute best results by listening IN! We are all different. I have no need to lose weight, in fact I’ve had such a ridiculously busy January in the club, that I’m struggling to keep up with myself (I can feel when I’m going into calorie deficit), so the odd bowl of chips isn’t going to harm. However, I also know that gluten, yeast and sugar definitely are my personal enemies (NB: sugar is everyone’s), so all puds, breads, and pasta are decidedly and strictly off my personal menu until I get myself back in check. Long term, there are foods that are, across the board, not good, so clean eating IS the way forward, but you need to know what clean eating is, and how to keep the hunger tiger at bay (easy). You can then afford a little slack. For my fact sheet on this: mizzfit@mail.com and keep your emails coming in, I love to answer your queries. Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Local Talent: Adam Tatton-Reid Type of artist? Photographer. Range of products? Mounted and framed prints. Price range? £20 to £100 for prints, commissions from £100. How long have you been an artist? I studied Fine Art at Portsmouth University but only started photography about 2 years ago. I also sketch in my spare time. Where did you train or gain experience? I’m 100% self-taught and have never attended any tuition. Time spent out in the beautiful Brecon Beacons, reading guides on the internet and experimenting with my camera has been a wonderful experience. Feedback from friends and other photographers

on social media are also great motivators to continue. Artist statement: Born in Brecon and currently living in Boughrood with my wife and two children. I love the outdoors – having the stunning Brecon Beacons on my doorstep means plenty of reasons to share this beautiful countryside with you, using a range of techniques and an eye for some experimentation to express the beauty of Mid Wales and nature through print. My focus is usually on local points of interest but with an unfamiliar twist by means of long exposures, layering images or capturing unusual occurrences in nature. Occasionally I enjoy astro-photography and trips to cities around the world, which can lead to some interesting opportunities to stretch my photographic abilities.

1,000 Footsteps @ Talgarth Mill

Open Tuesday to Sunday and Bank Holiday Mondays, 10am–4pm

18th March

Guest Chef Night with The Gourmet Gardener Six courses £30. BYOB.

The innovative 1,000 Footsteps Menu, which is a collaboration between forager Adele Nozedar and chef Liam Fitzpatrick, has partnered with The Bakers’ Table at Talgarth Mill and will offer evening meals at weekends from just before Easter. The idea behind 1,000 Footsteps (which is the rough equivalent of one mile) is to highlight just how many delicious ingredients – either foraged or cultivated – can be available within just a thousand footsteps of any given location. Although this is the most locally sourced food you’re likely to find, the menu itself takes inspiration from all over the globe. Dishes such as mutabacha (from Morocco) will sit alongside Japanese kimpura; a Swedish tarte tatin could be followed by a dish from the Lebanon. Keep an eye on social media for further details or contact Adele on 07581 226 524 or breconbeaconsforaging@gmail.com.

REVIEW

Dining in the Garden Room at The Swan at Hay

We were really looking forward to dining at the now wonderfully refurbished Swan Hotel, a beautiful Georgian building on the west side of Hay, just a couple of minutes walk from the town centre. We just knew we would be in for a treat after sampling the canapés at their successful re-launch the previous week. Ronan and his staff gave us a warm welcome and showed us to our table in the corner of the Garden Room. We enjoyed a glass of Wide River Chenin Blanc from South Africa and chose our first and second courses from the well thought out and rather interesting menus. Later we ordered a bottle of superb Chilean Carmenere. The local staff are polite, sweet and willing to please. Alex brought a jug of water to the table and Emily took our orders. Two interesting varieties of breads were brought to us in a basket on a bed of toasted wheat. Different and rather attractive - a nice touch I thought. These were accompanied by a pot of garlic foam and some whipped pork fat with crackling. Loved the garlic foam! Then a pre-starter arrived. What a nice surprise! Ox cheek, with shellfish dashi and grains served in an oyster shell on a bed of dark green kale. Our first courses arrived. For Robert, Lamb sweetbreads with cauliflower and black garlic. Charred prawn with pink peanut, bean sprouts, coriander and lime for me. A wonderful combination of flavours, cooked to absolute perfection.

The appropriate time was given between courses before the next surprise arrived. This was getting better by the minute! A pre-main dish of beetroot and mackerel with a warm and rather tasty jus. My second course consisted of poached trout, brown shrimp, mace, cucumber and sea vegetables. Robert’s was Welsh Black Beef cheek with oyster, dulse (a seaweed famous in Ireland) and sea lettuce. All stunningly presented and a delight to eat. Their head-chef Jerry Adam, previously at Michelin Starred & 4 AA Rosette Ynyshir Hall and before that at The Swan’s excellent sister hotel Llangoed Hall, has a reputation for serving modern local food and this didn’t go unnoticed. Both Jerry and manager Ronan are passionate about good food, tasty food and good wine. Produce is sourced from Herefordshire, the Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Marches. The quite unusual and attractive crockery is made by local ceramicist Pauline Patterson and the gorgeous botanical art on the walls is supplied by another local lady, Lea Gregory. Our third course arrived, although in reality this was our fifth course! For me, set caramel, 8 verjus, golden raisin with 100% chocolate. A wonderful pudding, not too sweet, which is just how I like it. Robert’s chestnut with cremovo, crisp meringue and chocolate tofu was equally wonderful. Afterwards we nodded, glanced at each other, and said “good” in unison. We both felt terribly lucky to have been able to eat here. We ate from the Dinner Menu @ £40 per head. An interesting bar menu is also available with prices varying from £4.95 for soup of the day and warm bread to a chargrilled 8 oz Bavette Steak, with roast tomato, cup mushroom and chips @ £18.00. One can eat anything anywhere.

Choose from either menu and eat it in the Garden Room, the Green Room (a 12 seat private dining room), the 1812 Bar or The Market Bar. The choice is yours. A Lunch Menu is available from Monday – Saturday at £19.95 for 3 courses or £14.95 for 2 courses. Sunday lunch is served from 12:00-4:00 and is £18 for 3 courses, or £15 for 2 courses. The Swan donates £1 from every 3 course Sunday Lunch to St Marys Church in Hay. Everything here is perfect. Top quality ingredients, sourced locally, prepared, cooked and served with love and flair in a perfect setting. What’s not to like? Should you be looking for somewhere for Mothering Sunday, visit the website www.swanathay. com to take a look at the menu at £35 per head. When you next visit The Swan, take a look at the large, and I mean large, windows in the Garden Room, which have been painstakingly restored to their former glory. Quite magical. Ronan and Jerry, a huge huge thank you from Clare and Robert. The Swan at Hay reviewed by Clare Williams

Four walls driving you crazy? If you’ve spent the winter staring at your four walls thinking they could do with a bit of a makeover, maybe now is the time? Maybe those very walls are starting to look a little tired and in need of a fresh coat of paint, or the woodwork is looking a bit battered and scuffed and the windows just won’t go another year without freshening up, or those shelves just won’t hold any more books. Maybe it’s time to put the flat-pack furniture together to complete the look, or any one of those dozens of annoying little jobs that have been staring at you all winter, waiting to be done. If it’s painting and decorating, small jobs around the home or those larger projects that are pricking your conscience, well maybe now is the time to give them some attention...

Bring some colour back! ...and treat your feet!

Hay Castle Hay Castle has received planning permission for its restoration project! This covers the restoration and change of use of Hay Castle to create a public venue for education and the arts, and includes re-roofing the derelict section of the mansion, construction of an education space, gallery space, stairs and lift, café in the old coach house, viewing platform and lower floor in the Norman keep, removal and conservation of the great gates, and steps from the gate to Market Square. The work will begin later this year. 2017 has also brought fantastic news of a grant of £200,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation. This grant will be used to redevelop the Castle to create a vibrant cultural centre. A grant from the Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation will go towards establishing the traditional building skills programme and to advance education on the castle’s architecture through traditional building and heritage courses. A further grant was awarded by the Rothschild Foundation towards creating a reading room within the Jacobean Mansion. Do you have memories of Hay Castle? Did you ever go inside or play on the grounds as a child? Maybe you worked there during its time as a bookshop – whatever the connection Hay Castle Trust would love to hear your stories. Please do get in touch. You can email on info@haycastletrust.org, call on 01497 820 079 or write to Hay Castle Trust, Hay Castle, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5DG. In 2015 drones were used to look at the condition of the keep from above and investigate the roof of the mansion. During these flights the hidden spiral staircase, or vice, on the south eastern corner of the keep, could be seen for the first time. Last year ASAP Drones came to the site to explore the buildings further, and their dramatic images give a sense of the site as a whole and how all the different eras of construction are connected. You can view an excellent video taken by the drone on ASAP’s Youtube channel. Gwernyfed High School has been categorised as a ‘green’ school, the highest band. A green school is categorised as: ‘A highly effective school that is well run, has strong leadership and is clear about its priorities for improvement. It has a track record in raising the standards that pupils achieve and has the capacity to support schools to do better.’ Everyone associated with Gwernyfed is delighted that the hard work of our pupils and talented staff has been recognised by the improvement in standards to achieve this rating. We would also like to acknowledge the support of parents, Governors and ERW, the consortium school improvement

service, in ensuring Gwernyfed has become a strong performing school, well-placed to meet future challenges. The faith the community has shown in the school during the events of the last two years is appreciated, and the confidence they have given students and staff has paid off. However we are not complacent and continue to challenge our young people to achieve and do their best at all times. Thank you for your continuing support. Full details of Gwernyfed’s categorisation results can be found at http://mylocalschool.wales.gov.uk/. Hay-on-Wye Chamber of Commerce It’s been a nippy start to 2017 but as we head into March and signs of spring appear there’s an air of hope and excitement at the CoC. Current projects and topics of discussion at meetings are funding and facilitating the Christmas Lights, the sale of the HSBC building, supporting Cusop B&Bs to battle the mighty Trip Advisor, co-ordinating a strategic approach to the 40th Anniversary celebrations from April onwards and the possibility of revamping

the food festival in summer 2017. Our meetings are really well attended but we always love to see new faces so please don’t hesitate to pop along and get involved! A massive milestone was reached in February with particular thanks going to Deborah Davies and her amazing team at Pughs @ Londis...to date they’ve now sold a grand total of £14,000 worth of Hay Vouchers! If you are a business that would like to accept Hay Vouchers please contact us at chair@hayonwyechamber.co.uk to find out more; equally if you are business that already accepts Hay Vouchers and you need support with the scheme please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Our very special, little local economy should be so proud... and here’s to the next £14K. We’ve also kick-started the year by organising a diary of opportunities for members. . . firstly there is ongoing PR, Media Training & Goal-Setting sessions from Jazz-Cat, then in February a group of twelve members attended Dementia Friends Training. The interest was huge so there may be another date later this year, please get in touch if you’d like a place

on this highly acclaimed course. Hay Castle Trust have kindly hosted two tours of the castle including an overview of their plans – there are still places left on the tour scheduled for 3rd March, 1–2pm, so please contact me if you’d like to reserve a spot. One final opportunity later this month is a heavily subsidised EFAW course (Emergency First Aid at Work), the details of which are being finalised as we speak – keep an eye on your emails/social media for details. So it’s onwards and upwards and hope to see you all about town soon! Find us on Facebook and Twitter and online at www.haychamber.co.uk. GP, Haygarth surgeries are trialling a new nurse telephone triage system to help us manage the increased clinical workload and ensure each patient always sees the most appropriate clinician within an appropriate period of time. This will be an extension to the current triage system, which has been in place for on-the-day GP appointment requests but will now extend to all requests for a GP appointment, even routine GP appointments. The system is managed by a qualified Nurse Clinician who will assess the most appropriate clinician to suit your needs. This could be:

assessment unless you are too unwell to do so. Feedback from the current triage system is very positive and there will be an opportunity for you to give feedback on the new system in the form of a patient questionnaire once the system is fully established. Please keep your eyes peeled over the next few months for updates on the way we work, in the Wye Local, on our website www.hay-garth.co.uk and at the practice. Hay Town Council

One of our first tasks in the New Year was to set the local precept for the next financial year; this is the charge which local councils can set and which residents of the town will pay in addition to their council tax; Hay Town Council is ever mindful of keeping this charge as low as possible. This year, as a result of close scrutiny by the finance subcommittee and the financial expertise of our clerk, it has been possible to avoid any increase on last year’s precept. This has been achieved despite the considerable extra financial pressure imposed on

local councils by the transfer of assets such as toilets, sports facilities, etc, from Powys County Council to local Councils. We wait to see what the outcome of the library transfer might be! Currently, the town council is giving its full support to a move to maintain the facilities within the town but feel that it is not possible to take on further additional responsibilities without imposing a big financial burden on the residents of the town for the foreseeable future. In May of this year elections will be held for a new town council; this will be an opportunity for anyone who is interested in local issues to become a member of Hay Town Council. From a personal perspective, it is an interesting and challenging role and one which can be both rewarding and satisfying. The only attribute needed is enthusiasm and an interest in the town and, maybe most importantly, the ability to withstand the constant pressures imposed by the County Council! It is likely that some councillors will not be standing for re-election so there will be several vacancies.

endeavouring to ensure that those assets which have already been transferred are working as well as possible in readiness for the newly elected council in May. U3A Hay Education is wasted on the young! Of course it’s not, but it should not be confined to the young either! The University of the Third Age (U3A) is an international, unique and exciting organisation. It provides life-enhancing and life-changing opportunities and Hay is very fortunate to have its own U3A. It offers the chance for retired and semi-retired people to come together and to learn together, not for qualifications but for the sheer joy of discovery. It’s never too late!

In the meantime, the current council will strive towards dealing with issues as they arise and

U3A Hay, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, offers a range of educational experiences designed to appeal to all interests. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month for a varied and thought-provoking programme of talks. In addition, there are a number of specific Interest Groups that meet at other times, e.g. Architecture, Music,

Geology, Garden Visits, Astronomy and more as shown on the front cover of this Wye Local. These are opportunities to learn and engage with interesting local people with similar interests. All this for a subscription of only £10 per year! We meet at Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro, with coffee from 10am; lunch is also available. This month, on Tuesday 21st March, Geoff Loosemore will present ‘Cadbury: The Rise and Fall of a Family Business’ at 10.30am. After lunch, Professor Brian Henderson will speak on ‘Exoplanets’ with the Astronomy Interest Group. The entrance fee is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. For further information, phone Tricia Wordley on 01497 821 595, or visit the new U3A Hay website or Facebook page. New members and visitors are always welcome. Hay2Timbuktu Following the successful visit by Elmehdi and Bilal in September, folk in Timbuktu have been optimistic about the relationship with Hay as it enters the tenth year of the twinning.

Bilal has moved from his school to become director of a new museum: it may be that his visit to Oxford will inspire his new functions. The director of Yehia Alkaya retired at Christmas to be replaced with the head of maths, who has been very involved with the girls’ bursary project and should give continuing support for our work with the schools. New students involved in the bursary project are making sound progress and we are actively seeking ways to develop this work. The medics are continuing active projects and are currently looking for funding to develop and expand the links. Securing grants is time consuming and demanding but the rewards for the people in Timbuktu make these efforts worthwhile. Our links with Hay Primary School develop to enable the children in Hay to learn more about life in a very different culture and environment and initial links with U3A could lead to some exciting developments. We look to people in Hay to engage with H2T as we initiate a low cost project to build toilets in our partner schools. Contact H2T for further details.

Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham) Q: Can a kangaroo jump higher than the Empire State Building? A: Of course. The Empire State Building can’t jump. Instead of “the John,” I call my toilet “the Jim.” That way it sounds better when I say I go to the Jim first thing every morning. My friend thinks he is smart. He told me an onion is the only food that makes you cry, so I threw a coconut at his face.

POETRY PAGE

The Herefordshire Landscape From Aurora Leigh, by Elizabeth Barrett Browning I dared to rest, or wander, - like a rest Made sweeter for the step upon the grass, And view the ground’s most gentle dimplement, (As if God’s finger touched but did not press In making England!) such an up and down Of verdure, - nothing too much up or down A ripple of land; such little hills, the sky Can stoop to tenderly and the wheatfields climb; Such nooks of valleys, lined with orchises, Fed full of noises by invisible streams; And open pastures, where you scarcely tell White daisies from white dew, - at intervals The mythic oaks and elm-trees standing out Self-poised upon their prodigy of shade, I thought my father’s land was worthy too Of being my Shakespeare’s... Then the thrushes sang,

And shook my pulses and the elms’ new leaves... I flattered all the beauteous country round, As poets use; the skies, the clouds, the fields, The happy violets hiding from the roads The primroses run down to, carrying gold, The tangled hedgerows, where the cows push out Impatient horns and tolerant churning mouths ‘Twixt dripping ash-boughs, - hedgerows all alive With birds and gnats and large white butterflies Which look as if the May-flower had caught life And palpitated forth upon the wind, Hills, vales, woods, netted in a silver mist, Farm, granges, doubled up among the hills, And cattle grazing in the watered vales, And cottage-chimneys smoking from the woods, And cottage-gardens smelling everywhere, Confused with smell of orchards. Have you written a poem and would you be thrilled to see it published in Wye Local? If yes, please send your poem to: clare@wyelocal.co.uk. Please include your name and contact number. Or perhaps in your life you’ve come across a poem that means a lot to you? Send it to us. We look forward to hearing from you.

Protecting wildlife for the future

Wild in March

Other places to find it include Lockwood Island on the north coast of Greenland (the most northerly plant locality in the world) and at a record 4505 metres height in the Swiss Alps. So, cold as the Beacons can be, here it basks in relative warmth compared to some of its relatives. It is one of the species that South Wales could eventually lose to global warming but meanwhile it is good to know that cultivated forms of this flower are available for that cold corner of the garden.

Saxifraga Oppositifolia This attractive flower can be glimpsed in March if you know where to look but it tends to favour the most inaccessible places on the Beacons such as the north face of Pen y Fan or Cribyn. It is a remarkable plant that may well be the most coldtolerant flowering vascular plant.

This month you can explore the ancient woodlands of Dyfryn Crawnon on the 2nd as part of the Crickhowell Walking Festival. (Book at bit.ly/ crickwalk) There are work parties at Wern Plemys (Ystradgynlais) on the 3rd and 24th and Coed Dyrisiog on the 28th. Keith Noble is giving a talk on The Galapagos Islands on the 31st at Talybont. For full details of these go to bit.ly/BWTdiary John Crellin
