Welcome to the April issue of Wye Local, the community magazine for our area. A few new advertisers have joined us this month: Ty-Mawr The Kitchen Garden and Karen’s School of Motoring, both page 2. Shane Allard Upholstery, page 3. Foyles of Glasbury and Hay Tractors, page 6. The Twisted Spoon at The Old Barn, pages 18–19. Ann Dierikx Photography, page 21. Some of these businesses have just started trading, so please show your support. This month we celebrate some milestones with local businesses: a 10th anniversary for The Harp Inn, Glasbury – see what events they have planned on page 8. A 25th anniversary for Vision & Sound, Hay – find out on page 32 how you could win a kettle, vacuum cleaner or washing machine! A 50th anniversary for Cartref Care Home – see page 24 for details of their open afternoon. Reaching these milestones is a huge achievement: well done to each of them and, of course, thank you to all their customers who have supported them over the years. Bryan Davies has written a superb article about Talgarth Fire Station, see page 28. Back in my teenage days I used to work at the Mason’s Arms; little did I know it used to be office and kit room for the Fire Station. Hats off to all the firefighters from 1907 to present day. Thank you Bryan, what a remarkable read. Lastly, I’m pleased to say that our Companionship for the 50+ has had a super start. More people have sent in their details, proving it is much needed in our area. And more importantly, sealed envelopes have been sent on. See pages 30–31. Enjoy, Lisa Marie Badham x Photo: Badham family enjoying local park in Shanghai

Many of you will have been shocked by the Conservative Chancellor’s announcement that he would be increasing national insurance contributions for self-employed workers. Not only did this break a Tory manifesto pledge but it would have been particularly damaging to constituencies like Brecon & Radnorshire. Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that 9,400 people in Brecon and Radnorshire were self-employed in October 2015 - September 2016, the highest number of any Welsh constituency. Self-employed people make-up 29% of all people aged 16+ who are in employment here. It is clear this policy would have a disproportionately negative impact on this area. Many self-employed people are already struggling, margins are very tight, so it would have been a very bitter pill to swallow. It would also have had a massive impact on agriculture, which is why farming unions also expressed their opposition. The Chancellor’s budget also confirmed plans to cut corporation tax. It was galling for self-employed people facing this national insurance contributions rise while corporations are benefitting from a tax cut. A week after the budget, after widespread condemnation and pressure, the government confirmed it would be u-turning on the policy. This will have come as a huge relief to many self-employed workers, however, the fact it was ever on the table is indicative of a Government with mistaken priorities. When this proposal was announced, I wrote to the Chancellor outlining my concerns and to ask what considerations he gave to constituencies like Brecon and Radnorshire when he conceived the plans. A party with the interests of rural Wales at heart would never have even proposed such a damaging tax rise in the first place. I will continue to stand up for workers in Brecon and Radnorshire. If you would like to discuss this, or any other issue with me, please contact my office on 01874 625 739 or email me on Kirsty.Williams@assembly.wales.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Recent weeks have been a time of mixed emotions for many of us in Talgarth. We have certainly had some tantalising glimpses of spring, with a strong daffodil crop and gorgeous sunny days. Unfortunately, several of those days have coincided with our having to say a final goodbye to much loved local residents, including Phyllis Smart, Sylvia Devereux and most recently little Drew BarkerWright. In each case, our community came together to support the families, in celebrating the life of their loved one. We are fortunate to live in an area with such genuine community spirit, where people look out for each other. March also saw some significant milestone dates for Talgarth residents and I would like to mention just a couple here. Firstly, on Tuesday 14th March, Mrs Tilly Jones of Coed y Bryn celebrated her 100th birthday, surrounded by family and friends. It was a very happy occasion – and when I called by, Tilly was proud to show me her lovely cards, including one from Her Majesty the Queen, and the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, First Minister of Wales. Tilly was born in Germany in the dying days of the First World War, and made her family home in Talgarth in the 1940s. She is fascinating to talk to – and I feel privileged to have spent a little time with her on her special day. On Wednesday 15th March, another special Talgarth resident had an anniversary to celebrate. Back in the spring of 1987, Josephine Rumsey first became Clerk to Talgarth Town Council. Some 30 years later, Josephine is still in post, having dedicated 30 years’ service to our town and its adjacent communities, which together form Talgarth Ward. Josephine’s loyal service is truly remarkable and in her first 30 years, she has not missed a single monthly meeting. For her resilience, her good humour and her public service, Josephine deserves our respect and our thanks. Over recent weeks, I have had the privilege to take part in the hosting of our Pizzoferrato – Talgarth Twinning link, with four thematic visits from our

Italian friends on four consecutive weekends, including a focus on local food and drink produce; shared experience of welcoming refugees and those in danger as well as looking to future relations within Europe. At a time when our national life is so riven with division and confusion with regard to Europe, following the Brexit vote, it has been inspirational to witness the openness and friendship shown by people of all ages in our community – and the response from our Italian guests. I hope that this link will continue to flourish in the months and years to come. I look forward to seeing many of you around at community events in the coming weeks. Notably, we have the much anticipated re-opening of Talgarth Co-op and Post Office, after its £500,000 refurbishment, scheduled for Friday 31st March. The internal works remain a mystery at the time of writing – but the redecoration of the front and sides of the building and installation of new windows overlooking the Square are most welcome. Similarly, following the arrival of the Hay Vets Clinic in Talgarth earlier in the year, the partnership is holding a Charity Open Day from 10am on Saturday 8th April, including a family friendly Treasure Hunt around the town. It promises to be a very special occasion, as well as raising funds for our new Ysgol y Mynydd Du and the veterinary charity, Worldwide Veterinary Services. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please don’t hesitate to contact me on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, via Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or Twitter @WmPowell2016. Alternatively, you can come to my next Advice Surgery at Talgarth TiRC on Friday 7th April from 5pm, to discuss any issue that is troubling you. Happy Easter William

Love in the Time of Tinder Redefine love for the digital age at The Greatest Adventure: Love in the Time of Tinder, a new event by the Institute of Art and Ideas – best known for the world’s biggest philosophy and music festival, HowTheLightGetsIn. This weekend retreat on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th April, supported by eHarmony and in partnership with Psychologies, Relate and Philosophy Now, will provide an answer to what is fast becoming modern life’s most pressing question: how to develop meaningful relationships in a world that has left them behind.

Scientist Steve Carter, broadcaster and the host

This event is for people in relationships and out of them; for anyone who wants to learn to communicate better and build the self-confidence to love and be loved fully; who wants to learn how to choose the right partner; to find fulfillment in love; to develop the skills to better communicate with others in both romantic and platonic relationships.

Retrain the Brain Are you wearing too many hats? Frazzled? This month I thought you might like to hear about where my industry is heading and why. I’ve often spoken here about the need to address cortisol levels (the fat storage hormone), and that no matter how fit and healthy you might feel you are, if you’re not sleeping well, or are stressed, you’ll often falter, and indeed – hard core metabolic exercise might be the very last thing you need! My Personal Training sessions often contain NO exercise (at least to start with), and we might kick off with two sessions of pure talking, then some mellow mind-body sessions. Many of the clients I see simply want to be happy! It’s really good to see that the fitness industry is starting to embrace this holistic approach, and a course I did last year was RIGHT up my street! (I booked on to the first course EVER)! The BrainFit Workout™ recognises that our cognitive thought patterns often comprise repetitive internal ‘self-talk’, which can be stagnant and negative. But we also know it CAN be rewired (a process called neuroplasticity). The session addresses this with movement and music – it’s simply brilliant! I’m not

going to give too much away here as to the contents of the workout but the feedback has been truly awesome, and if you also do the ‘homework’, I give out, will truly reinforce what we do in the session. If practiced regularly enough, (the simplest routine) it really does reduce selfsabotage, stress levels, and a lack of confidence, in turn helping us to stop thinking small, and start to live at our full potential. As I often point out NONE of us are issue free – even the most apparently ebullient there – we all have ‘stuff’ we’d like to improve on. With clarity given as to the best breathing patterns to calm us and meditation at the end, we are a very long way from the “pumpin’ running, beasting” sessions of the last few decades (although there will always be a place for this and I still run these kind of sessions too). Fitness is learning to be kinder, softer, and chilled out, but can leave you feeling AMAZING and super positive just like the endorphine enriched metabolic drills you may have experienced. Want more? As always: mizzfit@mail.com. Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

REVIEW

The Old Barn & Twisted Spoon Pub and Tearoom, Three Cocks just some of the choices, all made by Sue from the Wye Knot Stop tea shop at Llyswen. Good coffee and cold drinks including smoothies, milkshakes, iced teas and Fruit Shoots (for the little people) are also available all day. I’m glad I don’t live next door as I would be in there all the time and never go food shopping ever again! Talk to Cath and Paul if you are thinking about an afternoon tea party; perfect for birthdays, baby showers and any type of celebration. Well, where do I start? As there is so much to say I think the best place to start would be at the beginning…are you sitting comfortably with a good cuppa? Cath, part of the Williams farming family from The Slwch near Brecon, and Paul who is the chef, have moved back to the area after having run a bar/ taverna in Albufeira in Portugal for 6 of the 12 years they were there, and have now reinvented The Old Barn Inn. Part of it is now known as The Twisted Spoon which is in the newly refurbished area of the pub, all light, bright and fresh and you get a wonderful warm welcome. A stone wall which used to separate the two bar areas has been knocked down, and now it’s all one big open plan space. Much nicer. Tea, cakes, coffee etc., are served in the lower area, The Twisted Spoon, and the pub meals are served in the main area. A good choice of breakfasts are served from 9am to 2pm on Mondays to Saturdays and on Sundays from 9am to 12 noon. Brunches and lighter lunches are served 11am to 5pm. The Twisted Afternoon High Tea – booking recommended – is served from 2pm to 5pm. Would love to try that sometime! A choice of different teas are available, Assam, Ceylon and even Rwandan – or perhaps a nice bottle of chilled white prosecco could be your choice, for special occasions – or just because! Pots of Teapigs loose teas @ £2 a pot and cakes, pastries and all things sweet are served all day. Sponges, scones, tea cakes, Welsh cakes, cheesecakes and bara brith are

Robert and I popped in for supper the night that Wales beat Ireland in the rugby. Robert enjoyed a pint of good Ringwood Ale and the bottle of Rioja we ordered was perfect. After choosing from the extensive menu, Cath showed us to our table upstairs overlooking the old beamed bar area from where we could admire the fabulous array of antique farm implements and birds of the stuffed variety on the walls. Robert’s Sizzling King Prawns in Garlic and Chilli Butter with toasted garlic ciabatta was divine. I know, because I pinched one of them! My Breaded Whitebait, with a sour cream and chive dip, were tasty and crisp. Our main courses were equally good. A juicy 8 oz Sirloin steak for me, which came with a grilled tomato, onion rings, sautéed mushrooms, a mixed leaf salad and chips to die for. Robert chose the scrumptious Beef Stroganoff with rice from the Specials Board. We were too full to even contemplate pudding! The good work ethic that is maintained by Cath and Paul filters through to the staff who are professional and friendly. I would highly recommend a visit here, at whatever time of day you like from 9am till 9pm for food. Drinks are served until closing time. Cath and Paul, a huge thank you for a wonderful evening, Clare and Robert. The Twisted Spoon & The Old Barn reviewed by Clare Williams

Local Talent: Ann Dierikx there is always more to learn. Artist statement: Born in Cheshire and now living in Talgarth with my two children, in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park, I am lucky. With such a diverse range of cultural and social events to hand combined with the glorious Welsh landscape, there is never a shortage of inspiration and opportunities to work with the camera. I recently held a successful exhibition, ‘Multiplicity’, in the Andrew Lamont Gallery, Theatr Brycheiniog. I am well known as the music photographer at The Tabernacle and have been lucky to capture some important and established musicians and songwriters along with talented unsigned artists. It’s a truly special venue! I am currently involved in some great projects, which can lead to who knows where! The story continues. My camera is an extension of my eye and is my passion. I look forward to every new chapter that comes along.

Photo above: Worms Head, Gower Peninsula Type of artist: Photographer. Range of products: Events & commission photography. Price range: From £30, commissions on request. How long have you been an artist? Aged 9 I went on a school trip to St Fagans, I took my mums ‘Box Brownie’. The seed was sown. With my art and design training...most of my life! Where did you train and gain experience? After studying Art as part of my A levels, I took a Foundation Course, and went on to a BA Hons in Textiles. Photography was always a part of it. A successful career in Graphic Design and Marketing, meant I worked with images all day long. After a spell of living in beautiful Exmoor, North Devon, I always knew I wanted to work as a photographer. Photographs tell stories. I continue to hone my skills,

Talgarth Fire Station The earliest records I can find for firefighting in Talgarth come from 1907, when the town council purchased lengths of hose and standpipe key and bar to extract water from newly laid hydrants inTalgarth, the town only, as hydrants at that time did not extend to outer areas. These items of equipment were kept in the town hall, and would have been carried around on foot if required. There were no firemen as such – it was an ‘anybody have a go’ affair! In 1936 the equipment was moved to the police station in Regent Street, with Sergeant Pearce now responsible for its use and maintenance. By 1937 the Home Office was asking district councils to make emergency fire prevention preparations for the advent of war.Talgarth fell under the Hay-on-Wye urban district council. With the older generation providing fire cover in the town through the war years, 1943 saw Talgarth get its first motorized fire engine or, to be more precise, an Austin K2 towing vehicle carrying a 30ft ladder and trailer pump, manned by a crew of local men.The ATV and trailer pump were housed at the Tower Hotel, with office and kit room at the Mason’s Arms, both under a local agreement. This arrangement carried on until 1959 when a purpose-built fire station was constructed at a cost of £6,000 in Cottage Lane, the current site. Research shows us that there have been 65 retained/on call firefighters since 1959, with a recognition of service roll board in the station. The ATV vehicle was replaced with a modern fire appliance in 1959 – its busiest time was to be the hot summer of 1976. Fire appliances are replaced around every 15 years.Today a new fire engine costs over £300,000, with Talgarth due a replacement next year.

Talgarth’s first Sub/o officer was Jack Jones, the huckster, who retired in 1964 at well past retirement age and very reluctantly. Since 1959 there have been six retained Officers in charge. Talgarth Fire Station has seen many changes over the years, from being a town-council-run service until 1941, NFS 1941–1948, Breconshire & Radnorshire joint fire brigade 1948–1974, Powys Fire Service 1974–1996 and Mid & West Wales Fire & Rescue Service 1996 to date. Talgarth was also one of the first retained stations to have a female firefighter, in 1996, and has had female firefighters ever since, with two at present. Many fire stations have had grandfathers, fathers, sons and brothers serving together, but we at Talgarth are also proud to have a father and daughter as serving firefighters. The station has seen many different types of incidents over the years. The AMOCO oil refinery in Pembrokeshire in 1984; Gwernyfed High School fire in 1991; major flooding inTalgarth in 1998; as well as mountain fires, property fires, road traffic collisions, and more recently first responders for level one cardiac calls. The fire service in Talgarth has come a long way over the last one hundred years, and it is all due to the dedication and commitment of local retained/on call individuals. All firefighters are trained to very high standards to meet any eventuality. Talgarth’s present crew is run by Officer-in-charge Watch Manager Bryan Davies, three Crew Managers, one ICFF and six Ffs, all keeping our communities safe. Main photo: The crew in 1959 when the current station was opened. Inset photo: Talgarth Fire Crew today. Article supplied by Bryan Davies of Talgarth Fire Station.

Happy 25th Birthday Vision & Sound! Andrew opened Vision & Sound on 13th April 1992, and as the name suggests, it stocked TVs, hifi, cameras and camcorders.Things have changed a lot over the years! To begin with, Andrew and family lived over and behind the shop. In 1998 Andrew decided to knock the back wall out into their kitchen/dining room and expand the showroom to display white goods; washing machines, tumble dryers, fridges, fridge freezers, built-in appliances, etc. Vision & Sound now stock a large range of Bosch, Siemens, Neff, Panasonic, Hoover and Liebheer, as well as Hotpoint cookers, Sebo Roberts radios and Ice King appliances. In 2001 Andrew opened Bethel Electrics in Brecon which his brother Richard manages. In 2009 he went on to open A1 Electrics in Builth Wells which his friend Lee Adams manages. Andrew’s son Thomas joined the firm in 2012 and Andrew was delighted to have him on board. All three

shops now stock everything from a light bulb to a stateof-the-art Smart TV. The idea started small with a plan to display a few works for Hay’s 40th anniversary of independence celebrations. It then snowballed and more than 25 artists are now exhibiting in as many shop windows. The trail showcases the wide creative scope of book arts, from tiny structures to altered books bordering on the sculptural and beyond. This is a picture of our lemon tree ‘citrus limon’ which sits on the upstairs west facing window-sill. It is in blossom now and the delicate soft white flowers with yellow centre have the most exquisite and unique complex aroma. The essential oil of lemon is from the fresh fruit rind. The lemon is pressed to release the oil. It is found in perfumes, kitchen products and really does seem to be a ‘cure-all’. Lemon ‘citrus limonum’ can put a spring in our step – it helps alleviate tiredness and lethargy and also aids focus and concentration. This Easter why not try our home fragrance spray No4 – Spring / Summer which is a unique synergistic mix of essential oils including pure essential oil of lemon. Or mix one yourself – maybe all the Mediterranean oils lemon, lime, grapefruit and bergamot. In Italy so beloved were the lemon trees that Cosimo Medici from Florence (pater patriae) had a portrait painted of his. Article by Jacqueline Kennett. Source: Daniele Ryman.

News from... Fairtrade Hay We’ve had a busy couple of weeks joining in with the Fairtrade Foundation’s annual campaign, Fairtrade Fortnight. The highlight this year was a visit from Taysir and Cathi from Zaytoun, producers of Fairtrade Palestinian olive oil and other foods. We heard about the difficulties the farmers are facing due to the unstable political climate. They told us about the importance of living with dignity, and being able to work and farm safely and securely. You can buy Zaytoun’s products from Hay Deli, or directly from Fairtrade Hay member, Ange. We also did talks with Clyro and Hay schools and Clyro brownies, and Eighteen Rabbit took part in an event with Fairtrade Monmouth. Our Chair, Jo Eliot, had a trip to parliament during Fairtrade Fortnight. Along with dozens of local campaigners, Jo attended the All Party Parliamentary Group on Fairtrade which raises awareness of Fairtrade amongst MPs and influences politicians to consider Fairtrade in policy making.

This work is particularly important as we face Brexit. The livelihoods of millions of farmers and workers from the world’s poorest countries who rely on trading with us are at threat. Head over to our Facebook page to sign a petition on this issue. Contact us via www.facebook.com/fairtradehay and visit our blog for more info: http://fairtradehay.blogspot.co.uk/. Glasbury Get-Together Club A very pleasing afternoon where members at the first March club meeting welcomed Claire Davies to sing for us. Her beautiful voice was enjoyed by all, and closed with the Welsh anthem as it was St David’s day.Tea and Welsh cakes were served afterwards. Our first trip for the year to visit Llancaiach Fawr Manor at Nelson has been confirmed for Tuesday 11th April leaving from Glasbury Village Hall at 9.30am. Cost for manor tour, group concession £6.95 plus cost of coach travel, refreshments available on site. If you would like to join us, please give us a ring. As I write, there are 4 seats remaining for the trip to Malvern Showground RHS Spring Festival, £21 advance booking plus coach travel for Friday 12th May leaving at 9.30am from Glasbury Village Hall. Guests welcome.

The varied programme promises to be an educational and informative day. Please do come and join us at Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro with coffee from 10am; lunch is also available. The entrance fee is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. Being Average

JW’S

by J.W.M. It’s easy to be average There’s really nothing to it You live your life just as you please And hardly know you do it. But what if you are not like that? You’re very tall or short or fat Your teeth stick out – you have a hump You stammer – shout – make others jump You’re ugly too – or so you think and feel that you should see a ‘shrink’. But that’s something you must not do Because inside you are really you And so be strong – go on look around There’s lots of others I’ll be bound So live your life, have lots of fun
