Welcome to our July issue. Last month the children and I returned from a stay in Shanghai. It was our second stint in the city, and what an adventure we had. With modern technology I was able to work on our magazines from the comfort of our high rise apartment. We made time for exploring and socialising with friends from all corners of the world. Cariad attended an International Kindergarten. Her class was taught in Chinese in the morning, English in the afternoon. If you see Cariad out and about, feel free to ask her about it. Her usual comments on it are “I prefer Clyro School, I didn’t know what they were talking about in China!”. Safe to say both children are glad to be back home. It’s the simple things: in Shanghai the kids were not allowed to walk on the grass. First day home, they took their shoes and socks off and enjoyed the green stuff for hours! It’s also making me appreciate our area, our community. I can’t remember the last time I climbed Hay Bluff or Pen y Fan – well this summer it is happening. With the talk of green hills, turn to pages 12–13 to see how the children and I got on at White Haywood Farm and Restaurant. Now that really was a lovely way to settle back into country life. July and August are great months for local events. As I write this column the sun is shining, the wildlife is vocal, life is good. For a full list of classes and events, turn to our growing What’s On section. Welcome to new advertisers: The Salad Project, page 3. Hay Horse Show, also page 3. Heart of Oak, and J&J Synnock and Sons, both page 6. Wye Valley Trading Co. on the inside back cover. Please show your support to these and existing advertisers. Right, I’m now off to make some pork dumplings. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Summer bath times for Cariad and Otis.

election. Thanks also to the huge number of helpers and volunteers from across Mid Wales who went above and beyond in the cause of an open, fair and tolerant society. Whilst the ultimate result was disappointing, I know that those of us that share progressive values will get up, dust ourselves down and carry on fighting, whether that be in a political party sense or in the amazing third sector organisations that we are blessed with here in Mid Wales. I congratulate Chris Davies on his victory, and wish him well returning to Westminster in what looks certain to be a very uncertain political climate. However, I do have grave concerns about what Theresa May’s coalition of chaos will mean for our communities. The Queen’s speech has already been delayed, and the Conservatives may well end up being held to ransom by the DUP. I will be keeping a very close eye on how their deal will affect local people, our public services, and our negotiations to exit the EU. The appointment of Michael Gove to the environment and rural affairs position is another area of concern to me. During the referendum campaign he told us he was “sick of experts”, I hope he will listen to the experts in his new role, otherwise the impact on our rural areas could be dramatic. As ever, if you would like to discuss an issue with me, please do not hesitate to contact my office on 01874 625 739 or email me at Kirsty.Williams@assembly.wales.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Recent weeks have seen a whirlwind of events, including the return of Chris Davies as Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire, on a night when no single party secured an overall majority in Parliament. We have also witnessed the terrorist outrages of Manchester Arena, London Bridge, Borough Market and Finsbury Park, involving the cold blooded murder of our fellow citizens, out and about of an evening. The latter atrocity followed only days after the devastation of the Grenfell Tower fire in North Kensington, just minutes away from our partner community in Talgarth Road, Hammersmith. At this time, the final number of people who perished in the inferno in the small hours of Wednesday 14th June and the prospects for the injured are not known. However, there are rightly demands for lessons to be learnt throughout the country in terms of fire safety and housing quality. In this connection, I have written to Cllr Jonathan Wilkinson, Cabinet Member for Housing, and to Simon Inkson, Head of Housing, seeking reassurance on this vital area of policy locally. At the same time, I am exploring with members of the Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees Group if a respite stay can be offered to survivors of Grenfell Tower, via the Barons Court Project, a charity based at 69 Talgarth Road, London W14 – www.baronscourtproject.org. And while all these difficult events have rightly claimed attention at a national level, I would like to put on record my family’s thanks to so many members of our local community for their friendship, messages of condolence and demonstrations of practical kindness during our recent bereavement. My late mother was a native of Cwmdu and spent most of her adult life in the Talgarth area, her home for over 65 years. As an active member of the community over the decades, including especially the Talgarth WI, Talgarth Luncheon Club and the Glasbury Farm Women’s Club in recent years, she was lucky enough to retain her alertness, independence and positive outlook right up to the end. We are grateful to all at Talgarth Medical Centre and to the staff at Bronllys and Nevill Hall Hospitals for their

exemplary level of care and to all who contributed to the celebration of her life last weekend, both at St Paulinus Church, Llangors, and afterwards at the Castle Hotel in Talgarth. Such kindness will not be forgotten. It was my privilege recently to join pupils and staff from Talgarth CP School on a site visit to view the progress being made by Willmott Dixon on our new area primary school, Ysgol y Mynydd Du. The excitement of the pupils was evident as Building Manager Marc Clague took them on a tour, after a briefing and presentation in the board room. The new school comes into being in September, initially on the two existing sites at Talgarth and Bronllys, until the scheduled handover of the site in spring 2018. The Welsh Government’s £24,000,000 investment into the five new primary schools currently under construction in the Gwernyfed catchment area, combined with the planned £6,000,000 investment at Gwernyfed High School, is unprecedented. It is a demonstration of commitment to high quality, human scale education in our communities – and I acknowledge the part played both by First Minister the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM and by Kirsty Williams AM as Cabinet Secretary for Education in making it a reality. I look forward to seeing many of you at community events in the coming weeks, including Talgarth Sports 2017 on Friday 28th and Saturday 29th July. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, if you have any issues of concern, on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk on Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery will take place from 5pm on Friday 7th July at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. In any event, I look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes, William

Solar Maintenance

As the sun comes out, now is the time to think about checking all of your solar equipment is working properly. Solar thermal (or “solar hot water”) systems are wonderful – they sit there day in day out, heating your hot water cylinder with free solar energy. In energy terms they are probably the most efficient technology available to us. For every unit of electricity spent pumping the water around it is possible to harvest over 50 equivalent units of heat. Good quality systems have been built to last – designed to work in temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius, they should also cope with freezing temperatures down to -20 degrees. However, these extremes of temperatures do take their toll, so it is important to look after the systems properly. It’s a good idea to replace the fluid every 5 years as a maximum, and you can consider checking them more frequently. Specialist Energy has been working with renewable technologies for 15 years, and we can help you with installations, repairs and safety checks. Solar thermal is eligible for payments under the government RHI scheme – often more generous than the PV Feed in Tariffs. We can also install very efficient heat pumps to help make the most of your free solar energy by heating your home or premises. You could even be heating your buildings for free by installing a heat pump which will also qualify for the renewable heat incentive! COAL, WOOD & OIL HEATING

-Your local MP

I am hugely excited to have been re-elected as Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire last week. I would like to thank everyone who put their trust in me to represent them once again in the House of Commons. I thoroughly enjoy the election period as it gives me the much needed opportunity to knock on doors across Brecon and Radnorshire to see what issues people are facing and how best I can represent them at Westminster. Both elections in Brecon and Radnorshire were a huge success for the Conservative Party. We now have 19 seats on Powys County Council and are now running the council in coalition with the Independent group. I was also re-elected with an increased majority. Beating the Liberal Democrat candidate by 8038 votes. This gives myself and my Conservative colleagues in Powys the opportunity to work closely, to ensure that Powys County Council works for the people of Brecon and Radnorshire.

I have five key areas that I would like to focus much of my efforts on over the next parliament around my everyday duties as your MP. 1. Work closely with businesses to encourage local investment and job creation. 2. Fight the proposed closure of Brecon Barracks. 3. Encourage infrastructure investment to increase access to rural broadband. 4. Continue my campaign against LDP proposals. 5. Work with the relevant authorities to increase affordable housing across Brecon and Radnorshire.

I believe that my five point plan strikes the right balance between moving forward and protecting what we hold dear. I will battle against the closure of the Brecon Barracks and against the LDP proposals planned for much of Radnorshire. Both our countryside and Barracks are integral parts of our constituency. They bring tourism and much needed investment into our area and I will battle to keep them in their current form. I will also push our constituency forward, encouraging business investment to ensure that Brecon and Radnorshire continues to have the lowest unemployment levels in Wales. Whilst improving our internet and phone signal infrastructure and providing new, innovative and well-priced affordable housing in the countryside and our beautiful market towns.

Get to really know... Alan Powell Alan Powell is a self-employed apprenticeship served carpenter and joiner, with his own workshop on Broad Street, Hay-on-Wye. He played bass guitar for about thirty years with local bands and served 32 years in the retained fire service at Hay Fire Station. He is now a Hay Town Councillor. Place of birth? Llanfihangel Taly-y-Llyn, Brecon. Where do you live now? Gipsy Castle Estate in Hayon-Wye for the last 44 years. Marital status? Married to Christine for 48 years. Occupation? Self-employed carpenter and joiner. Children? Yes, two – Michelle and Richard. Pets? Yes – Barnie, a very lively Jack Russell pup, seven months old. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Dr Who. Are you a collector of anything? Cookery books. I have in excess of 300. If you could be an animal, what would you be and why? An owl; it might make me a bit wiser. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To make this world a peaceful place. What is your usual thought when you wake up? Hope it is going to be a good day. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? Next day’s appointments: I hate to be late. Do you believe in ghosts? No, but I do have a phobia of the dark if I am on my own. Most exciting thing you have won? A spinning wheel made by Gordon Clarke which is a twin to the one he gave to Prince Charles and Lady Diana. Two lessons life has taught you? Learn to say no and think before you speak. What makes you grumpy? Ignorant people – there is no excuse for it. Teenage crush? One of the girls at school. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Family, friends and charity of choice. Have any bad habits? BAD HABITS – ME?! Yes, who hasn’t? Which bad habits drive you mad? People who spit

in public, fly tipping and, big time, people who do not pick up their dog mess: they should not be allowed to keep dogs, as they clearly do not think of other people. What book would you recommend to others? I can’t really as I am not much of a book reader, but you could try the Hairy Bikers Perfect Pies – it’s a little different, don’t you think? Best present ever received? A real sheepskin flying jacket from my wife. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Nothing: I am what I am, what you see is what you get! If you could visit anywhere in the world where would you go? Italy. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: I am about to retire in a couple of months so I need to make my own cedar wood greenhouse before I retire, which can also be my fallout shelter. I don’t have any more goals really as I’ve achieved most already. Name one regret you have: Not spending enough time with my children when they were young. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Having few worries and having a great time with very good friends – memories which I will always cherish. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Doing my best to help the people in our community. What’s your favourite song at the moment? Don’t have one really as they all sound similar. What’s your favourite song of all time? The Trogs, ‘A Girl Like You’. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Cook a nice meal and have a glass of wine or two. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Maybe a game of golf or just chill out. Have you any hidden talents? I play bass guitar in a band, sketch cartoons, tie my own fishing flies and cook. What would be your dream job? I already have it. Sum yourself up in five words: Sensitive, friendly, approachable, joker and optimistic.

REVIEW

Fish & Chip Thursday at White Haywood Farm that lovely summer’s evening a cold cider would have gone down a treat, but for me there’s no alcohol allowed when I’m driving. Next time I’ll bring Mr B, and he can drive!

So the kids and I aren’t long back from Shanghai and I’ve got them back to work, just how they like it! Pauline and Philip invited us along for their Thursday Fish & Chips at White Haywood Farm & Restaurant, Craswall. With Chinese delights mainly on the menu since January, we snapped up the invite. Children collected from nursery and school, we made our way up Forest Road out of Hay-onWye. The journey to White Haywood is about 20 minutes. That’s 20 minutes of glorious views, rolling mountains and bleating sheep, reminding us why this area is so, so glorious. We’d arrived a bit early: the Fish & Chips menu starts at 5pm and runs until 7.30pm, when they swap to the restaurant menu. To kill a little time we ran about on the lawns, enjoying the views and the animals. Otis got rather exited when a tractor drove into the yard. Pauline had been busy making fresh pies – dusting off her apron, she came out of the kitchen to take our order. With good old fish and chips a distant memory, both Cariad and I ordered this, Cariad going for the child’s portion. I also opted for a side order of curry sauce. With the talk of fresh pies, I also ordered the Haywood Beef Pie. Otis, all he was asking for was “Marto auce” (tomato sauce for those who don’t speak 2-year-old language). Otis prefers to have a bit of everyone’s food. Philip, who is Pauline’s husband, takes the role of barman. He’s also been known to step into the kitchen during a rush. Philip served me a coke, with ice and a slice. On

Ten minutes later our food was served. Wrapped up in paper, with wooden forks chosen by the kids, it was time to tuck in. It all tasted so good. The chips were perfect. The cod was tasty with a lovely crisp batter. The curry sauce was very nice and sweet. The portions were ideal for us as a family of three. I didn’t have room for the pie so I took this home to enjoy. And my, oh my was this pie good. The pastry had a superb texture. Pauline certainly didn’t scrimp on the meat as there were lovely big chunks of it that were so tasty. The gravy was flavoursome. I would go back in a heartbeat just for the pie alone. I know one family member who is from the North, she loves pies. Hannah, you’ll be pleased to know that they also serve the same Haywood Beef Pie the rest of the week on their restaurant menu, you just need to book in advance. White Haywood Farm & Restaurant is a place we’ll definitely revisit. As I sat there eating my fish and chips outside on the terrace, looking at the super duper views, I realised this is up there with fish and chips at the seaside. And there were no pesky seagulls firing at you from all angles. During our visit many locals called in to order. The Thursday evening menu goes down a treat with local farmers after a hard day’s work. Some phone the order through. Some are happy to order there and catch up with Philip while they wait for their food. Some eat in, some take away. There are kids’ toys to keep the little people entertained. The beef and lamb is their own, farmed there on site. Most of the vegetables come from their parent’s garden. And everything else is served as local as possible. So remember, Fish & Chips (as well as lots more,

take a look at the menu pictured above) is served just on a Thursday, 5pm–7.30pm. You can just rock up. The restaurant takes bookings for lunch or dinner, 7 days a week, all year round. With starters from £4.50, mains from £10.95, and sweets at £4.95. Sunday Roast is also available with the option of two meat choices and one vegetarian choice. Prebooking is required. Thank you Pauline and Philip for a most enjoyable visit. You’ve reminded me what a lovely part of the countryside we live in. Know Thyself! Are you hard on yourself? Are you too driven? My mid 20s–30s saw me just the same. I used to work a 50 hour week (specialist decorating), often. Then, once here in Hay, I worked like crazy for the first 7 years, building up my business. I rarely took breaks, (or even holidays!), and was doing dance aerobics, running, racing, cardio, kick boxing, Body Conditioning…What are we running FROM?! One HOT summer, aerobics was very low on numbers as we were melting! I remember thinking ‘I need exercise that’s quieter, cooler, and less frantic’. So in 2005 I took the Freestyle Pilates course, initially as more of a business decision really. No one would have seen me as being a ‘mind-body’ instructor: I’d tried doing yoga back in the day and started well, but by the fourth session, I was doing shopping lists in my head! Maybe now I was ready to embrace change and slow down a little. This is not an ‘age thing’, I promise you! It’s more about getting wiser to my needs, self-preserving and anti-injury. That affects my clients as all I do filters down to them! We’re now getting meditative! Today, I still love my tough circuits-type sessions, boxing is

awesome, and barre is pretty jumpy – but I’m absolutely committed to the slower sessions because I can now see, and totally endorse, that balance is key to everything we do in life. Stress truly is the enemy and can jeopardise your health and hormones. To find balance is blissful! I now walk my dogs not for exercise, not for‘fat loss’ but slowly, mindfully – to appreciate our landscape, and soak in our lush green! Balance works in other ways ways too: recently I wanted to feel I could handle any of my classes easier down the ‘studio end’ of the Gym so started a course of progressively much heavier weights (because if you’re strong you can handle anything!). My clients have started joining me! My approach to nutrition is also far softer. It’s simple – if you’re in the shape you want to be, with high enough energy, and not getting ill – just keep doing what you’re doing! And if that includes the odd pud so be it! (If you’re not happy, though, let’s tweak it!) All July I’m offering free health consultations. Just phone, call round and let’s check to see if you’re getting your balance right too. Ask for Cat. Local Talent: Lea Gregory of Botanical Art Elements Artist and owner of www.BotanicalArtElements. com, Lea moved to Hay in 2016 after retiring from a more than 35 year career in the advertising and media industry. She sells her watercolour, botanical themed prints and cards via her online store, with prices ranging from £25 for unsigned prints to £75 for a signed, mounted print. Lea’s prints were recently selected to feature in all of the nineteen newly refurbished bedrooms at The Swan at Hay. She is currently working on extending her artworks into a range of home wares, soft furnishings and ceramics. How long have you been an artist? I don’t really think of myself as an artist, more like a creative, business person. Painting has been a lifelong hobby but it is only recently that I have turned my hobby into a business, and that was quite accidental. I was asked by a friend if I would paint 11 botanical themed paintings for their new house extension – not something I had done before and to be honest it took me a while to find a style that I liked. I’m really not that good when it comes to detail, but I have a pretty good eye for shape and light. After I completed the work I just kept on painting, and when I got to around thirty I thought I had better do something with them. I am motivated by a business challenge as much as I love to paint so it’s the perfect combination for me.

as a contemporary take on what has been viewed in the past as more of a scientific category. Most of the flowers come from my garden or the surrounding hedgerows (with the occasional visit to the lovely Gordon at the flower shop) and all of the printing is done at Old Forest Arts in Hay. I feel lucky to be based in such an inspiring and well-served creative community. What is your proudest moment? My proudest moment so far was being asked to produce the prints for The Swan at Hay; I think the new team are doing a great job in supporting local businesses and keeping the supply footprint as small as possible. Have you any future plans for your work? My ultimate ambition would be to have a small store in Hay selling a range of prints, accessories and home wares, a la Cath Kidston. I’ve a long way to go though!

How would you describe your art? I call them artworks rather than paintings because I sometimes edit the image in the post production stage. I’m a really messy painter, so I frequently have to remove blobs of paint and tidy up edges. I scan the original watercolour and then electronically cut out the image. This way I can resize or rotate the final artwork so that all the prints work well together. I never change the colour but I might, for example cut a hole in a leaf that wasn’t there originally – I like imperfections. My work certainly wouldn’t stand up alongside Lizzie Harper’s, a local botanical illustrator whose work I really admire, but I think it has a place

Lime will be partnering with Hay Castle to offer more courses throughout the coming years, which will raise awareness and improve skills to care for our heritage buildings, with a special emphasis on training people planning to specialise in traditional construction methods.

Admiral of Hay Navy will be in attendance and hopefully the sun will shine! Our next formal Chamber Meeting will be held on Monday 17th July, 6–7pm at The Swan @ Hay. All welcome!

We thought we’d use our column this month to be straightforward and pro-active! Here are some dates/groups that might be of interest to you. If so, get in touch to find out more or just come along!

For the last few years the Chamber has organised and fundraised to make the Christmas Lights and switching on ceremony happen. This is an enormous but fun task and we’d welcome any help we can with it. There will be a Christmas Lights Meeting on Monday 11th September, 6–7pm at The Swan @ Hay. If you feel able to assist with the lights, ceremony and/or fundraising, however small you feel your input could be we’d really welcome your support. Find us on Facebook and Twitter or online at www.haychamber.co.uk.

Road and Newport Street. A lot of local people, especially some of our older and vulnerable residents in Hay are worried that more and more vehicles seem to be exceeding the 30mph speed limit. With its hidden side roads and narrow or non-existent pavements, speeding vehicles pose a real hazard for pedestrians, particularly parents with buggies, dog walkers and wheelchair users. There’s already been a collision at the junction near Hay & Brecon Farmers and vehicles have been recorded going over 45mph on that stretch of road. So after a discussion at a Town Council meeting last year it was agreed to set up a Community Speed Watch (CSW) group in Hay. CSW is a national initiative where the police train and authorise local volunteers to monitor the speed of vehicles by using a handheld device that only records the speed of the vehicle. News from Hay & District Dial-a-Ride It was National Volunteers’ Week in June, a time when we say a big thank you to our fantastic and diverse team of volunteers. It was nice to see some of them visit us for the cakes we had in the office during the week. A variety of volunteers make up our team. Trustees, drivers, passenger assistants, office assistants, fundraisers and Friends of Dial-a-Ride. We are currently recruiting people for the roles of Trustee and office assistant, plus trying to extend the numbers of our Friends. The group of Friends are helpful and kind people who can help out with our fundraising from time to time. This might be baking an occasional cake or helping set up for an event. Fundraising is an essential part of our charity’s work

Find us on Facebook for up-to-date information on our service and events. News from Haygarth Medical Centre Thank you to all our patients who filled in ‘comments and suggestions’ forms and put them into the boxes. The main issue identified by patients was the radio, with comments equally split between ‘No radio please’ and ‘Good to have the radio’. Having responded to concerns regarding patients being overheard when talking at the front desk we instituted the radio to provide some background noise and protect confidentiality for patients. It

would not be possible to have no radio and we have selected Radio 2 for an easy listening mix of music and talking. A patient highlighted that they had been unable to get through on the phone to cancel an appointment. We are in the process of commissioning a new telephone system which we hope will improve phone access. It is still possible to cancel an appointment online if you have registered for Myhealthonline. The new nurse triage system has had a lot of positive comments from patients and also one constructive comment that it ‘Does not make provision for those reluctant to discuss their problem with anyone but a doctor, and very bad for late or failed diagnosis.’ Due to the triage system it is now possible to have a routine appointment with a GP in 24–48 hours rather than 2 weeks, which speeds up diagnosis considerably. It is very helpful to the GP to have an idea of why the patient is coming to see us. The nurses will also arrange relevant blood tests prior to the GP appointment, making your time with the doctor most useful, and it can often highlight

If you need to get in touch with any councillors, names and telephone numbers are published on the Town Council website and also on the notice board outside the council office. If you would like to put faces to the names, why not come along to a ‘Meet the Council’ event at the Butter Market on Saturday 8 July, 10am–2pm, where several councillors will be in attendance.

News from Hay Town Council At the AGM in May I was extremely honoured to be voted in as Mayor and leader of the Town Council with Alan Powell as my deputy. Our first challenge was how to run an effective Town Council with just five councillors when our full complement is eleven. I am pleased to say that we have since been able to co-opt a further five councillors. We have also had interest from another person so should soon be at full capacity. My next ‘challenge’ was being part of the welcoming committee for the Duchess of Cornwall when she visited Hay Festival. I was so nervous to be wearing the chain of office in public for the first time. Having managed to curtsey without falling over, I was able to relax and enjoy the event and met some interesting people. The newly sworn in High Sheriff

News from Hay2Timbuktu Our town twinning relationship with Timbuktu is often reflected at the Hay Festival and this year was no exception. The talk by author Charlie English was about the ancient manuscripts being saved during the attacks on Timbuktu. The people of Timbuktu put enormous value on their extraordinary libraries of books, as do the people of Hay who are equally committed to saving the wonderful library in this literary town. The other Malian artist was Inna Modja, a young Malian woman who was part of the festival’s ‘30

under 30’ focus on young talent. During her concert she spoke movingly about the troubles in Timbuktu and its effect on young women in particular. She is a great example of the importance of education in Mali to bring young women to leadership positions. Our current project focus in Timbuktu is to raise money to build toilets for girls in the three schools where we fund educational support for girls. The lack of separate facilities mean that for a week each month the girls are often unable to attend school. The local council have kindly offered to support this by donating some takings from the public toilets in Hay. We have raised some funds from public collections during the Festival and we are continuing to look for more donations to bring this project to fruition. We are always looking for more Trustees to join us so if you have an interest in African issues and would like to learn about and help support projects in Timbuktu, particularly focusing on women and girls, please get in touch with John Winter on 01497 821 039 or Gill Lloyd at gillathay@icloud.com.

Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham) “Has your son decided what he wants to be when he grows up?” I asked my friend. “He wants to be a binman,” he replied. “That’s an unusual ambition to have at such a young age.” “Not really. He thinks that binmen work only onTuesdays.” I once gave my husband the silent treatment for an entire week, at the end of which he declared, “Hey, we’re getting along pretty great lately!”
