Competition Winner of August November competition: competition: Lynn Keylock, Gloucester Glasbury Ruth Bielecki,

Welcome to the September issue. For me, September is all about getting back into a routine after the school holidays. Whilst at first it’s a nice feeling to get organised, rather than the daily hectic moments in the previous month, there’s also a sadness of missing the little people being at home. Actually, as I write this, Otis has just tipped over a week’s worth of clothes that had been washed, dried and folded...with a proud grin on his face. So scrap that. I’ll be thankful when the chaos disappears! Hello to new advertiser Nonna Caterina, page 2; and welcome back to Seer Construction, page 19. Turn to page 3 to find out more about the Mayor of Hay. Intrigued about how and when Hay Fire Station started? See page 4. Diesel vehicles have been in the press recently: if you’re confused as I am, turn to page 13 for a simple break down. News of Drew Barker-Wright earlier this year touched many hearts; please see page 17 about a charity set up in his name. Good luck to #TeamDrew. Our 2018 Local Landscapes Calendars will be making their way into the local outlets this month. September is when local people start buying and sending overseas. On page 23 we focus on two of the contributors of this calendar. Local shops, charities and events have our calendars on a sale or return basis; each unit sold creates money for them or their cause. Please get in touch if you would like to sell them at a local event or in your shop. Remember, 50p of every calendar sold also goes to Wales Air Ambulance. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Mr B, Lisa Marie, Cariad and Otis Badham.

Creative Chef

HIGHLIGHTS

We also produce a similar publication for the town of Brecon and the surrounding villages – Local Beacon. Just like this magazine the aim is to support local businesses and services. The good news is, if you are unable to pick up your copy of the Local Beacon in the local catchment area, you can view it on our website from the beginning of each month. Some of the many topics included in Local Beacon, September issue:

The globe at hay are looking for an inventive chef to help create a new menu working alongside new management. The globe at hay is a busy cafe and restaurant serving lunch and dinner and catering for private events in the beautiful riverside town of Hay-on-Wye. We pride ourselves on making fantastic dishes using the best local produce and supporting community businesses. This is an exciting new role with the unique opportunity for the successful candidate to have creative input not just into the globe’s food service, but also in its overall success as a hub for all things creative. We are looking for people with a dynamic, charismatic and personable attitude. An interest in music and the arts is desirable but not essential.

Get to really know... Trudy Stedman, Mayor of Hay Trudy is a member of Hay Town Council and the current Mayor. She has lived in Hay for just over five years and says moving here is “the best thing I ever did”. She is an avid reader, loves horses and enjoys cooking, writing (when she gets time) and working with Hay Community Woodland Group. Place of birth? Newport, Gwent. Marital status? Live with partner Jeff. Occupation? Human Resources /System Consultant for a consortium of universities. Children? Yes, three – Jamie, Huw and Caitlin. Pets? Bella (a Beagle) and two horses (although horses aren’t really pets!). What was your favourite childhood television programme? Follyfoot. Are you a collector of anything? Books, particularly anything to do with food/cooking. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A wild horse, to have the freedom and speed would be amazing. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Invisibility: there are times when I would just love to be a fly on the wall so being invisible would help. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Is it time to get up already? What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I try not to think about anything as otherwise I’d be awake all night. Do you believe in ghosts? Not sure...when I was 16 I saw a friend who I later found out had died the night before, but I haven’t experienced anything like that since. Most exciting thing you’ve won? Tickets to Euro Disney about 12 years ago, but recently Hay Community Woodland group won an award from Keep Wales Tidy and I was privileged to be one of the team who received it. Two lessons life has taught you? Don’t put things off until later in life, do them while you can. Be yourself, don’t change to suit other people. What makes you grumpy? Lack of sleep! Teenage crush? Donny Osmond.

You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? A house with land for horses and things for the family. Have any bad habits? Easily distracted, particularly from housework. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Rudeness, bad manners, dog owners not picking up after their dogs. Do you believe in the afterlife? I’d like to think that deceased family and friends are ‘somewhere’ enjoying themselves but realistically I tend to think that ‘life isn’t a dress rehearsal so make the most of it’. What book would you recommend to others? Oh, the places you’ll go by Dr Seuss. Best present ever received? Love and friendship are the best things anyone could give or receive. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I wish I was more self-confident and slimmer! If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Always wanted to go to New Zealand and I would love to go back to Alaska. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Make a difference, lose weight, learn to ride, ensure that the Hay Town Plan is delivered, have a book published. Name one regret you have: You can’t change the past so its pointless having regrets. I do try to learn from my mistakes though. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: No responsibilities. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Master of my own destiny (well, as long as it fits in with horses, family, dog, work, council etc!). What’s your favourite song of the moment? ‘Symphony’ – Clean Bandit. What’s your favourite song of all time? ‘Like a Hurricane’ – Neil Young. Have any hidden talents? If I have they are very well hidden! Not exactly talents but I do hold a Day Skipper qualification and radio operator’s licence. Sum yourself up in five words: Tolerant, caring, loyal, creative, professional.

Hay Fire Station The first engine was bought in 1840 and was operated by hand pump and pulled by a team of horses. It was operated by volunteers.

The Fire Brigade was formed as a Volunteer Brigade in Hay under the old local government board in 1892. The brigade’s first fire call was at Mr Thomas Wallis’s oil stores attached to his grocery and ironmongery business in Broad Street and it has been serving the people of Hay and district ever since. Later a steam engine was purchased, still horse drawn, which was christened ‘Firefly’ with a bottle of champagne by Mrs Wood, of Gwernyfed Park. In the early 1930s the horses were pensioned

off and Firefly was pulled by an old steam tractor. Sadly Firefly was sold for scrap to aid the war effort in 1940. In 1957 the new Fire Station on Brecon Road, Hay-on-Wye, opened and it celebrates its 60th birthday this year. Tips for Gardeners Flower Garden 2 Plant spring flowering bulbs. 2 Replace summer bedding as it comes to the end with winter bedding. 2 Support tall flowers with supports. Kitchen Garden 2 Cover late crops of salads, courgettes and carrots with fleece/cloche. 2 Plant spring cabbage plants.

2 Continue to harvest produce as it is ready. Greenhouse 2 Plant early spring bulbs in pots. 2 Bring in tender plants to overwinter. 2 Sow hardy annuals for early spring flowers. The Lawn 2 Once the dry weather comes to an end scarify and aerate the lawn. 2 Apply autumn lawn feed. 2 Sow new lawns from seed. General Advice 2 Water and deadhead all plants. 2 Get the compost going: Autumn clearing generates lots of compostable waste such as leaves. Pond 2 Continue to feed fish until the weather breaks. 2 As leaves begin to fall, ensure the pond is cleared of fallen leaves on a daily basis. Wild in September

Protecting wildlife for the future

Autumn Gentian at Allt Rhongyr To see this in Brecknock you need to be on the limestone to the south of the county: Allt Rhongyr Nature Reserve for instance – or Craig y Cilau National Nature Reserve above Llangattock but it probably can be found between these in places in late summer / autumn. Another common name is Felwort which may or may not be a corruption of “Field Wort”. The small plants are difficult to find before they flower. The name “Gentian” is derived from Gentius, an ancient King of Illyria (180-167 B.C.), who, according to the ancient Greeks, discovered the medicinal value of these plants. A free Habitat Management Course starts on the 1st of the month at Ystradgynlais with six sessions once every week. There are Nature Reserves Volunteer Work Parties at Ystradgynlais (Marsh Fritillary survey day) on the 1st as well; Vicarage Meadows on the 5th and again on the 12th and 15th.Then on the 16th there is a Foraging walk around Ystradfawr Nature Reserve with soup around the campfire.

Culture Shock My adorable younger dog, Kenzi, had a sporadic problem with itchy skin to the point where she almost had fits (we call it‘skitty’).Anyone with a pet or child knows it’s traumatic to see them suffer. I noticed she got it when the weather got warmer and after some investigation realised she has a yeast problem. Switching her from commercial dog food (40% carbs) to raw meat (4% carbs, as they would in the wild), has more or less eradicated the problem and they both also get Goat’s milk kefir to further help balance their gut flora. This has delighted me as it’s further proof that the gut microbiome – the diverse community of bacteria that inhabits our intestines – is as pertinent to animals as to us. Annoyingly, I’m very careful over what I eat yet currently experience many sensitivities, yet my boyfriend can eat anything and ploughs through life trouble free! Our gut is, after all, as unique as we are – we are all biologically individual. If the complex balance of ‘gut bugs’ are out of whack, it can affect what diseases we may fall to, what skin complaints we may have, and symptoms such as IBS, headaches, and brain fog. The list is a LOT longer and more diverse than this, and gut-healthy foods

can help manage depression. Clearly, to support your gut is crucial and you may well improve on further aspects of your health ANYWAY, not to mention fat loss. Here’s the low down: Avoid all sugar as it feeds the enemy, and go for Stevia instead. Cut out junk food, opt only for small amounts of low-sugar fruits (go for lots of non-starchy veggies instead), enjoy healthy proteins, use healthy fats and oils (unless you have a medical reason not to), minimize your caffeine consumption, eat non-glutinous grains. Enjoy lots of fermented foods (prebiotics), such as Sauerkraut, Natural Yogurt, Kefir, Kimchi, Kombucha, Tempeh, Fermented Tofu. Some of these are so effective they are banned for a week if you ever decide to get tested for your gut flora as I did recently (as well as heavy metals – but there’s another article!). Ditch the harsh kitchen and loo cleansers (there are probiotic surface cleansers), and get outdoors or open your windows for as diverse an array of bacteria as possible. Diesel and electric vehicles

Recently there has been much talk in the press about the banning of diesel cars by 2040, and the rise of the electric vehicle. Discussion is rife – how will we charge all the vehicles? Do we have the necessary infrastructure? Will my car become worthless? And, understandably, how did this situation arise when only five years ago we were being told that diesel was ‘clean’? One thing we can be sure of – 2040 is a very weak target and is likely to be overtaken by the market much more quickly. Nearly every car maker is moving towards supplying electric or hybrid vehicles as their main sellers within a far shorter timeframe. The average life of a car is about 14 years so it is likely we will be seeing dramatic shifts long before even 2030. Volkswagen are expecting to release vehicles in the next two years which can fast charge to 80% capacity in 15 minutes, with an expected range of 300 miles. As 99% of vehicle journeys in the UK are under 100 miles, ‘range anxiety’ will become a thing of the past for most people. These issues impact rural communities so much more because of the lack of access to public transport. But we should embrace this change, for the advantages are many…travel costs at under 4p a mile, reduced emissions, lower car tax and maintenance costs – and if you have solar panels, adding storage batteries or using an electric vehicle means your investment works that much harder for you. The Drew Barker-Wright Charity Appeal It has been six months since we lost our only son Drew, to an extremely rare childhood cancer. Whilst Drew was ill our local and wider community raised money to support us as a family. We now wish to put that money to good use. We are setting up a charity in Drew’s name. We aim to fund research and support families affected by Paediatric Chordoma. Due to its rareness the survival rate of children under the age of five is very poor. We want to raise awareness of this cancer, fund new research and provide a network for families dealing with the devastation of this diagnosis. Our first event as a charity is the Cardiff Half Marathon. We have never been runners, but were advised that this form of exercise was good therapy for grief. When word of our plan got out, it wasn’t long before we amassed a team of 60 runners. #TeamDrew consists of absolute beginners to seasoned runners. Jo Lord is running with us and will be providing a team warm-up on the day.We are also delighted to have Steve Mandel – a chordoma survivor – on board. #TeamDrew aim to raise as much money as possible for our cause. Please support us as we devote our time, sweat and tears to the memory of Drew and children worldwide living with Paediatric Chordoma. Following on from the success of their sets at the first ‘Clubbing for Grown ups’ parties and alongside Craig Charles, Norman Jay and DJ Yoda at Hay Festival, this event will sell out in advance, so to book tickets call Max on 07817 767 391, or search for @supersonicdisco on Facebook.

Epic cycle ride for school laptops

Microtopping UK

Local Herefordian ScottWallace is cycling approximately 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats to raise money for Clifford Primary School. The money will go towards urgently needed laptops that are no longer funded due to government cuts for school resources. Scott faces the extra challenge of managing his Type 1 diabetes on the epic ride, but he is determined to back this important cause:“I had to do my bit to raise money for what is a necessity for children’s education today – computer literacy skills” Clifford Head Teacher, Marie Thomas, said: “We are seeking to raise £2,500 to buy five laptops, which will be used across the school – from Reception to Year 6. They will act as gateways to the children’s digital education. With the right digital equipment, our school children can open their eyes, ears, hearts and minds to the world beyond their school community and can become skilled, responsible, informed citizens of tomorrow’s world.” Scott hopes to complete his mammoth cycle ride in under 10 days beginning on 21 August. You can track his progress, wish him well and support the school via his fundraising page: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/cliffordsgot-talent. He will also be providing daily updates of his journey via Instagram (cliffordsgottalent) and Twitter (@CliffordLEJOG) for anyone who wants to follow his adventure!

Microtopping creates a continuous surface with no joints unless required. Applied in no more than four coats, the final thickness can be as little as 4mm thick, making it a very versatile alternative to tile and wood flooring. Microtopping can be used on both internal and external surfaces and can be applied to almost any substrate with the correct primer. We apply the product to floors, staircases and feature walls, wetrooms and worktops and even furniture. The finished product is very strong and durable, eco friendly and resistant to high uv levels. So if your looking for a seamless, contemporary finish in a large range of colours and effects, then please get in touch for more information. FOCUS ON

OUR LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS

Christine Starnes

Kathryn Dickerson

Where do you live? Peterchurch, Herefordshire.

Where do you live? Pencelli.

Occupation? Worked for West Mercia Police for 10 years, and now retired.

Occupation? Housewife.

Amateur or Professional photographer? Amateur. How did you get into photography? At quite an early age. My dad liked taking photographs, and for a short time I accompanied him to camera club meetings, where I sometimes sat as a model. I started with a Minolta, then a compact Fuji, then onto a Panasonic SLR. When I moved to Herefordshire 14 years ago, I saw a notice asking for new members to join Hay Camera Club. I wasn’t into developing and printing, but this offered digital photography. I entered inhouse competitions, and gained a lot of knowledge and advice, both critical and constructive, from judges and other members of the club which were invaluable. I purchased a Canon 60D and have several lenses. I have been on several workshops to gain experience, and am still learning to this day.

Amateur or professional photographer? Amateur. How and when did you get into photography? My father was a press photographer when I was a girl, so I don’t remember ever not having a camera. I bought my first SLR to occupy myself whilst my husband was birdwatching. When I bought my first digital SLR, about 13 years ago, I really became enthusiastic about landscape. What is your favourite local point of beauty? I’ve only lived in the Brecon Beacons for 10 months, so there are loads of places yet to visit, but my favourite local place is Blaen y Glyn. The river is different every time I go. Top tip to other local photographers? You don’t need good weather to take good landscapes, so always be prepared.

What is your favourite local point of beauty? This is difficult since the landscape around the Brecon Beacons is amazing - mountains, waterfalls, lakes. I suppose I have visited Llangorse Lake several times as well as Hay Bluff, because they are very near to home. I love Hay Bluff as the landscape changes with the seasons, and you can see for miles! Top tip to other local photographers? Join a local camera club. Ours is a very friendly club made up equally of men and women, both experienced and beginners. The knowledge and help to be gained is immense.

Macmillan Coffee Morning celebrates 20th year in Llanigon It is 20 years since the Lally family started to organize a small coffee morning to support the work of Macmillan nurses after the help they received when Rob Lally was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Each year the coffee morning has grown, and it is now a large event in the calendar of Llanigon, with the whole community coming together. The hall will be full of stalls, starting with the ever popular bacon rolls and coffee from 8.30am, followed by the cake stall and a huge plant and flower stall. The craft stall is run by the local craft club; the Chinese Auction seems to need more table space each year; and the book stall has a huge variety of titles and subjects. The raffle offers some fantastic prizes. There is also a produce stall with home grown fruit and vegetables, as well as homemade jams and preserves. You can buy your first Christmas cards

too, and pick up some presents on the bric a brac stall. So please come and join in to help celebrate 20 years of the Coffee Morning in Llanigon! There will be cake, lots of chatter and fun, on Saturday 30th September from 8.30am to 12 noon at Llanigon Village Hall. You are all invited.

Band Profile: Cost a Livin Band name: ‘Cost a Livin’, although Gary (guitarist) did suggest such gems as ‘Swinging Gates’ and ‘Shows to go ya’. The original line up was: Drums Nigel Protheroe; Bass Guitar Roger Smith; Rhythm and Lead Guitar Gary Gray;Vocals (if you could call them that) Mike Harris. When did the band first perform? On 23rd July 1986 – we arranged an ‘after royal wedding party’ at the Buttermarket and courtesy of much help from Paul Elkington, Tim Pugh and many others sorted out staging, lighting, PA and a number of others to perform. Colin Price, Clive Davies and Alan Powell who then went by the name of Music Unlimited played at the event – a lovely family evening. Had any embarrassing moments on stage? When the thermostat on the smoke machine we used for effects went on the blink and we managed to fill the entire function room of the social club in the Forest of Dean that we were playing at with smoke. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst being in a band? Too many! Catching a couple in flagrante by the side of the band van at the Royal Welsh Young Farmers Village gig was one that comes to mind. Changing at the back of the revolving stage at Wormelow and Gary in his underpants saw his trousers disappearing to the front of the stage because one of the boys had pressed the revolve switch and we of course all went around on the staging, including Gaz... What are your influences? Good old rock and roll – Bryan Adams, Queen, as well as R&B, Commitments-style, though the band had to be flexible – we had to ease back on some as we got more social club, hunt ball and wedding party gigs.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over recent weeks, several people have commented to me on how busy Talgarth has been, with a significant increase in visitor numbers. While the warm welcome people have come to know remains a constant, something else has contributed this year to the experience visitors have had in Talgarth – whether as a destination or while just passing through. The Grow for Talgarth team, led by Rosie and Bruce Williams, Gaynor Weavers, Helen Roome and Jayne Millman, have done fantastic work in The Square and along the banks of the Enig with their planting boxes. The sunflowers in particular have been a massive hit – and have cheered passers by throughout the summer. We have real cause to be grateful to them for their sterling efforts to enhance our local environment. Meanwhile, at the Powys County Council AGM in May, alongside Cllr David Evans (Ind) and Cllr Les George (Con), I was nominated to join the Dyfed– Powys Police and Crime Panel, an appointment since confirmed by the Home Office. It is fair to say that, when the post of Police and Crime Commissioner first came into being, the Liberal Democrats were highly sceptical and, along with Plaid Cymru, we decided not to contest the first election in Dyfed– Powys back in 2012. However, at the time that the primary legislation was enacted, my party insisted upon a robust scrutiny function, in the form of Police and Crime Panels. Now, as the sole representative from Breconshire on the Dyfed–Powys Panel, I am looking forward to the new challenge. High on the agenda of our first meeting in Carmarthen on 28th July was a scrutiny session with Police Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn (PC), elected in May 2016. As part of his annual report presentation, Mr Llywelyn explained why the police precept had to increase by 6.9% this year. He acknowledged that it was far from popular politically, but in the previous financial year, over £2 million of

reserves had to be used to ‘prop up’ the revenue budget. Dafydd Llywelyn attributed this directly to the former Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner, Christopher Salmon, who cut the precept by 5% and then froze it the following year. Other key topics upon which the Commissioner was challenged included the level of cautions issued in the force area and his forward strategy on CCTV. Dyfed–Powys Police covers a vast area and we all depend upon the police at key points in our lives, making the Panel’s work all the more important. For further information, please visit our website: www.dppoliceandcrimepanel.org.uk. All meetings are open to the press and public, and with the prior permission of the Chair, people can ask questions or make a statement in relation to a matter being considered by the Panel. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch via the website, if there are issues where we can be of assistance. As our youngsters look forward with mixed emotions to their return to school or college, we as a community can reflect upon a successful summer of events, with Talgarth Sports 2017 back in July and Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains in recent days amongst the highlights. I hope that we can look forward to a gentle late summer, as we prepare to mark the harvest next month. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, if I can be of help, by phone on 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 8th September from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. In any event, I look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes William

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

For me, one of the best parts of the job as the Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire is visiting many of the town and village shows we have in this constituency in the summer. It is always great to see the wonderful community spirit, not to mention the fantastic local produce and products on display.

The largest of these shows is, of course, the Royal Welsh in Llanelwedd. Brexit was the main topic that came up when speaking to the stall holders and visitors I met at the show. It has been over 13 months since the vote to leave the EU, yet the general public seem to be no clearer now about what Brexit will mean for them, than they were on the 23rd of June 2016.

Carpentry & Building

Economists from the London School of Economics recently calculated the impact of both a soft and hard Brexit on every local authority in UK.Their research found that every local authority would be negatively affected under either scenario but concluded that the economic impact of leaving the single market and customs union would be around twice as severe as a milder Brexit.

They said that Powys could lose between £22 -£36million per year, depending on the trade agreement with the EU. This is deeply worrying and the UK government needs to look at this report and try to address the issues it raises. Overall Powys did vote to leave the EU, but people did not vote to make Powys poorer so the Government must address this. Another issue that people frequently raise with me is Broadband. We recently had an amazing response from Brecon and Radnorshire residents with over 100 people attending a meeting with Openreach about their broadband at Brecon Library. The Openreach officials left with little doubt about how strongly people feel about the issue in this area. By contrast, at a similar event in Denbighshire, only one person turned up! It was so well attended that they have agreed to hold another meeting somewhere in Radnorshire in September. If you would like to come to that meeting, or would like me to submit your case to them, please email me at Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

-Your local MP

Chris Davies MP has backed calls for broadband compensation. Since my election in 2015, I have campaigned vigorously for improved broadband access for the people of Brecon and Radnorshire, and over the last two years access has increased from 45.1% to 67.1% across the constituency. A report by the British Infrastructure Group lists the worst performing parliamentary constituencies in the UK, with seven of the top 20 in Wales. With Brecon and Radnorshire in 14th place. It is absolutely disgraceful that people in Brecon and Radnorshire who have been suffering with terrible internet connections are still paying for broadband access they don’t receive. Many constituents pay hundreds of pounds a year and receive little or no access. This is outrageous and I am joining other MPs in calling for people who suffer with poor broadband to be reimbursed for the times when their internet has not been accessible. I believe in the 21st century there should be a basic level of internet and phone access throughout the country, wherever you are.We now live in an age where people live and work through digital devices and most businesses are doing a fantastic job in modernising. None of us could imagine ten years ago, that in almost every hotel, café and restaurant in the country we would be provided with free access to their Wifi. This is because we have all become ever more digitalised in the way we socialise and work. It is now inconceivable that people can’t access their basic connectivity needs in large parts of our constituency. Some areas still struggle to get any phone signal at all. I am glad the Welsh and UK Government has increased funding for super-fast broadband but the private sector needs to take a more direct role. I am backing calls on the UK government to introduce minimum standards for the broadband sector, with the aim for providers to deliver a basic level of accessibility for everyone across the UK. Times are changing and internet providers must keep up.

News from Bronllys Ward by Karen Laurie-Parry, Powys County Councillor for Bronllys Ward Firstly, Happy 90th Birthday to Arthur Robinson, former Erwood Postmaster and Vice-Chairman of Erwood PitStop Trust, from all your friends and the whole community. Arthur and his wife Penny were for many years the hub of the Erwood community at Erwood Post Office, and since retiring they are still very much involved in local organisations and shows. Penny organises the Vintage Section of Erwood Show, is Joint Treasurer of Erwood PitStopTrust and an active member of the day-to-day team who ensure that Erwood PitStop is a notable landmark for those locals and travellers who care to stop. Warmest of congratulations and gratitude to Arthur and Penny. For me, it has been a very hectic time since 4th May 2017. I sincerely want to thank those who came out to vote, and my Campaign Supporters particularly Irene and Sandra Price, and my husband Neil.Whether you voted for me or not, I pledge to do my best for you. I will work with you and for you, so that together we will strive to meet all the wants and needs within our communities/ward. Regarding my County Council Appointments, I am a member of Committees: Scrutiny B which includes Education; Audit; Planning, Taxi Licensing and Public Rights of Way. Outside Body Appointments are Mid & West Wales Fire Service and Brecon Beacons National Park. I am delighted to be appointed as Governor of Gwernyfed High School and Archdeacon Griffiths School, Llyswen. As you can only be a Governor for two schools, I have nominated a Bronllys Ward representative for Mynydd Du School, but I have become a member of the Friends of Mynydd Du and will continue to support the pupils and parents during the transition period and beyond. I look forward to working with fellow Community Councillors, individuals and groups to progress their work/ interests and identify any new projects to benefit our communities. Please do get in touch, if I can be of any help, by phone on 07976 928 154 or 01982 560 624, by email Cllr.Karen.Laurie-Parry@powys.gov.uk or on Facebook Facebook.com/CllrKarenLaurie-Parry. I am going to organise monthly advice surgeries in Erwood, Llyswen and Bronllys.

News from... News from Bryngwyn RDA We’ve been showing off our talent, here at Bryngwyn RDA. Seven of our riders attended the South Wales Fun Day at Clytha Park in June, and came away with both rosettes and very happy smiles. As always, we have been on the fundraising trail, and raised a very welcome £787 during our week in Kington charity shop. In July we received a picnic bench from Rhosgoch Young Farmers which also accommodates wheelchair users. We are very appreciative of this thoughtful gift, which the group had made themselves. We will be holding a fun afternoon for our riders on Saturday 9th September with games and rosettes; and as a thank you to our wonderful volunteers, on Sunday 17th September we will have a volunteers’ barbecue, with an optional morning ride beforehand. If you enjoy a game of bridge, Knighton Bridge Club

are hosting a Bridge Drive on Friday 29th September in Whitton village hall, in aid of Bryngwyn RDA and the Air Ambulance. It will be 6.30pm arrival for 7pm start, a two course meal and a glass of wine for £15. Phone 01547 528 614 for further details. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club The weather was kind to us for our July club meeting. Our Cream Tea and fun afternoon events were enjoyed by us all in the warm sunshine and Geraldine’s lovely garden, where she ‘planted’ various objects (not usually found in a garden) for us to list. Later, the Who’s who? child photos. Prizes were provided by club funds for winners. Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday 27th September, 2.30pm–4.30pm at Glasbury Village Hall, when we invite you to bring along your favourite poems or a good tale to tell, for our afternoon of Poems and Tales...with cake and tea. Hope you will join us. Guests welcome. Fundraising: Table Top Sale on Saturday 23rd September, 10am–1pm at Glasbury Village Hall. Open. If you would like a table for £6 please ring and book early. see us! For more information please email us on hayfieldgarden@gmail.com. News from Haygarth Medical Centre Book your flu appointment now! Flu (short for influenza) is a common infectious viral illness spread by coughs and sneezes. You can catch flu all year round, but particularly so in the winter season, which is why it’s sometimes called ‘seasonal flu’. The annual flu vaccine can help reduce your risk of getting flu each year, although it’s not 100% effective because it doesn’t work against every possible type of flu virus. The best time to have the vaccine is in the autumn, between September and early November, before flu starts to circulate. You should have the vaccination every year to stay protected, as the viruses that cause the flu change every year. If you are in one of the following groups you are eligible for a free flu vaccination: • •

those aged 65 years and over anyone who has chronic heart, kidney, liver disease • pregnant women • anyone who suffers with asthma or COPD • adults who are morbidly obese (have a BMI of 40 or above) • anyone with neurological disease (including stroke or mini stroke) • has lower immunity due to a health condition or treatment • those who live in long-stay residential care homes • carers • anyone who has a poorly functioning spleen • frontline healthcare workers and carers • all two and three year olds (age on 31 August 2016) • all children in reception class and year 1, 2 and 3 in primary school. Appointments for the flu vaccination will be available at both Hay-on-Wye and Talgarth surgeries from Monday 9th October 2017. Please book your appointment soon if you have not already done so.

News from Hay Town Council The current full council has only been together since July. Some of us are new to being a councillor and some are extremely experienced. We are very keen that you, the townspeople of Hay and district, know who we are, that we are available at any time and that you can get in touch with us easily. That’s the idea behind some new initiatives from Hay council. Firstly, we will be producing a quarterly newsletter with all the latest news and views from our town and its council. It will be distributed to households in Hay, it will also be available in some of the businesses in town and will be sent out digitally to a growing list of subscribers. Secondly, our council website is in the process of renewal. We are currently going through the tender process to find a supplier who will be able to create a new website. Our quarterly newsletter will be available on the website along with Council meeting minutes, events, directory of interests, meeting agendas and an extensive archive. Our third initiative is what we are calling ‘meet the

We are your council but without you we can achieve very little. We need to keep in touch with each other and we hope that these initiatives will help. timbuktu_manuscripts.html. In October we will hold our annual AGM in Hay-onWye.The date and venue will be announced shortly and we hope that as many supporters as possible will attend. We will provide an update on the progress of the girls’ education project in Timbuktu and we are very pleased with the progress that they are making. We plan to continue fundraising to support more girls through education and our focus this year will to raise £7,000 for the construction of female toilets in the three schools.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Russian Revolution. This event changed and affected the lives of everyone living in Russia at the time, and subsequently had major implications for the whole world. To hear a fascinating account of one family’s experiences, come along on Tuesday 19th September at 10.30am, when Natasha Guttmann will describe her British family’s flight from Russia. U3A Hay really appreciates the opportunity to host Mrs Guttmann and we hope you will join us for this unique presentation.

Medics4Timbuktu are also planning to fund three year training courses for midwives and will be holding a fundraising event during the autumn.

At 1.30pm, after lunch, the Current Affairs interest group will compare Russia of 1917 with the political situation there today. As Russia is rarely out of the news nowadays, there will be plenty to learn and discuss. Overall, this promises to be an interesting and educational day.

HAY BUS / HAY TAXI

We are always looking for more Trustees to join us so if you have an interest in African issues and would like to learn about and help to support projects in Timbuktu, particularly focusing on women and girls, please get in touch with John Winter on 01497 821039 or Gill Lloyd at gillathay@icloud.com.

We look forward to seeing you in the Music Room at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am, and lunch from 12.15pm. The entrance fee is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. For further information, phone Tricia Wordley on 01497 821 595. News from Hay2Timbuktu Now in our tenth year of being twinned with Timbuktu, we continue to maintain a relationship with the schools and community in the city despite the current turmoil in Northern Mali.Travel to Timbuktu is still difficult and dangerous so our communication is mainly through email. Few people from the west manage to visit the city although the British Library who are now working on a project with the manuscripts have undertaken a visit described in this blog: http://blogs.bl.uk/endangeredarchives/2017/05/
