Recruitment adverts are popular this month. Turn to pages 2 and 5. New advertisers Charlotte of Hay (page 4), McCarthy Kitchens (page 13), the Filling Station (page 25), the Poetry Bookshop (page 27), Fire-drake (page 40, in our Christmas Shopping feature) and Caledonian Market (back cover) join us this month. Please show them your support. Our ‘Focus on’ articles continue on pages 9 & 10. It really is a pleasure to showcase these amateur photographers who have contributed to our 2018 Local Landscapes Calendar. Lastly, I know it’s only autumn but it’s time to think about that all-important Christmas office party or annual family gathering. We hope our Christmas Party feature on pages 29–35 will help. If you’re an early bird (which I am not) and are keen to start the Christmas shopping, check out the local high streets first. You may not find everything you need, but what you will find is unique gifts for friends and loved ones as well as a great choice of seasonal food and drinks, all while supporting local businesses. Pages 36–41 will help you plan your shopping trip. There are lots of events planned this month and at the beginning of November. Check out the What’s On listings and many of the adverts. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Mr B, Lisa Marie, Cariad and Otis Badham.

Get to really know... Katie Eckley Katie Eckley works full time in the family business at The Old Railway Line Garden Centre in Three Cocks. She has been working there for 20 years this year, after starting with sweeping the floors and litter picking on weekends to save up money to buy Christmas presents. Katie is currently enjoying being a new mum, and also teaching herself to bake when she finds a spare five minutes! Place of birth? Brecon. Where do you live now? Glasbury. Marital status? Married. Occupation? Garden Centre Manager at The Old Railway Line Garden Centre. Children? One beautiful step daughter and one bouncing baby boy. Pets? Two lively springers. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Are you a collector of anything? Not really – just hundreds of baby photos on my phone! If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A spider, so maybe I could understand why they are so terrifying. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Time travel. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? How quickly can Mike bring me a cup of tea? What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? What time and how many times will Tommy (the bouncing baby boy) wake me up for feeding? Do you believe in ghosts? I try not to think too much about it so I don’t freak out when I’m on my own at night. Most exciting thing you’ve won? Shopping trolley full of booze at Glee Trade Fair in Birmingham. Two lessons life has taught you? Always try to find the positive in everything, as being negative will drag you down and getting in a fret won’t get you anywhere. What makes you grumpy? Not getting tea in the morning. Teenage crush? Heath Ledger.

You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Family and friends. Have any bad habits? Nail biting. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Chewing with your mouth open. Do you believe in the afterlife? Don’t know, keeping my fingers crossed. What book would you recommend to others? Charlie Cook’s Favourite Book – a big hit in our house. Best present ever received? A lush Kettler furniture set for the garden. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Be able to speak another language – it’s on the ‘to-do’ list. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I have a long list… but Vietnam is pretty near the top. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Keep my family feeling happy and loved, travel to as many places as possible, continue to enjoy life at The Old Railway Line, learn another language, keep having fun. Name one regret you have: Buying that old red Renault Megane in 2005 – I have never seen so much smoke from one engine. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Climbing trees. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Doing chores when I want to do them rather than being told to do them. What’s your favourite song of the moment? ‘Wheels On The Bus’ is about as cultured as it gets in our house at the moment. What’s your favourite song of all time? The Proclaimers, ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)’ is always a good dancefloor filler. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Depends if I’m working Sunday… What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? If I have a day off, learning to bake. Have any hidden talents? Excel spreadsheets, love them. Sum yourself up in five words: Loving life as a Mummy.

New in Town Charlotte of Hay is a family-run business that has just opened in Hay-on-Wye. Run by mother and daughter team Debbie and Charlotte Landymore, local residents who specialise in fairtrade and ethically sourced products, the shop is a treasure trove of beautiful clothing, fabulous home fragrance, essential oils, bath bombs and hand cut soaps. Where are you based? 4 Market Street, Hay. Why Hay? Because I live in Hay and I wanted to bring something new to the town and also because I didn’t like to see the empty shops. Why did you decide to open this shop? I retired from working in the NHS after 30 years and wanted to get more involved in the local community and build a business that my daughter Charlotte can take over. What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered? Just my computer dying during the writing of this article! What do you wish you had known before you started? Instead of having 6 months off after I retired I wish that I had started the business even earlier. Is this the first business you have launched? Previously I had had two shops over the last 30 years, both in Lincolnshire, and I have also been a business partner in a doctor’s surgery for about 30 years. How is this different from the others you have launched? This is purely my sense of style, my personality to a tee, being able to source ethical and fair-trade products. What type of experience helped you open/run/ manage this business? For the last 35 years of my life I have been involved in business, including setting up business plans and finance. Describe a typical day in your business: Turning up an hour or so before the shop opens to make sure it’s spick and span for when trading starts and just generally helping customers with choices of aromatherapy products, clothing, crystals and just about everything else! Any advice to new businesses in the area? Be brave and take the plunge. Hay needs full shops and a thriving business community.

REVIEW

Sugar and spice and all things nice at the Honey Café, Bronllys

Emma de Bretton Gordon, joint-owner with her cousin Lucy Hurn, run a fabulous eco-friendly place where you can eat both spicy Mexican food or something with no spice in it at all. Emma showed us to our corner table in the cosy restaurant with Phil Thompson’s marvellous original artwork on the walls. Having only eaten Mexican food once before, at Wahaca in Covent Garden, I was rather overwhelmed by such a magnificent choice on the menu. Lots of Tex-Mex including wraps, classic Cajun dishes, chilli con carne, fajitas, tacos, taquitos, tostadas, chimichangas, enchiladas and burritos, etc. Tommy, who is an ‘absolute honey’, brought us a jug of water and we were also looked after by lovely waitresses Hattie and Beth. All the staff are polite and not intrusive at all. Proper people. Robert and I shared a half-pitcher of Margarita @ £8.95. Cheaper than two glasses of wine! And very nice it was too and brought back those dim and distant memories of the Caribbean. We later ordered a bottle of Alto Pampas des sur Malbec @ £15.95 which was also very good but as I was driving that night – what’s new? – I went rather steady. My starter was a king prawn taco @ £4.95. A skewer of prawns cooked in authentic Cajun spices and served on a coleslaw filled corn taco shell with a sour cream and chive dip on the side. Rather nice with just the right amount of spice. I’m a poet, ha ha. Robert’s Halloumi Tostadas @ £4.55 tasted as good as it looked. Crisp tortillas topped with grilled halloumi

cheese and chef’s smoky pepper relish. Robert’s main course, Chimichangas @ £8.95, was very spicy, which of course he loved! Chilli beef & beans (you can have veggie & beans if you like, or one of each), parcelled up in two flour tortillas, deep fried and topped with salsa and melted HC cheese blend. That’s their own blend of Monterey Jack and Wyke Farm cheddar. To add even more spice he ordered a side dish of hot and spicy Jalapeño peppers! My South West Sizzler @ £7.45 was a wrap of freshly cooked Cajun chicken strips nestling among crisp lettuce, sweetcorn and red peppers with cheese and black pepper dressing. Quite spicy and rather good. Many side dishes are available, from salads through to chef Stu’s hot sauce. They also cater for the little Amigos. A fabulous selection of burgers is on offer too, priced from £7.25 to £9.45 for The Malthouse Monster. One of those is definitely on our agenda. I’ve been wanting to come to the Honey Café for ages and am so glad we did. Everyone I know who has eaten here tells me how good the food is. We are already looking forward to the next time, and it was music to my ears to know that they offer a take-away service! Amazingly Robert didn’t want a pudding, but I found a little bit of space for the homemade blueberry & vanilla cheesecake. So good! Emma, Lucy and Stu the chef try to buy as much as they can from local sources.Their meat, bread and milk is all sourced from within two miles. Fresh bread and milk is delivered every day from Ashburnham Bakery and John the milk. We should all try their Sunday

the local area. I bet that was a lot of fun and mischief… In 1994 they introduced the Tex-Mex menu which is still proving hugely successful. They aim to keep the business well maintained and stay faithful to their roots. And, what’s more, the views of the Black Mountains and the Brecon Beacons from here are magical. Don’t take my word for it though, check out the website www.honeycafe.co.uk or, even better, check out their advert here and just visit. The Honey Café reviewed by Clare Williams roasts with delicious meat from WJ George Butchers in Talgarth. When they can, they use seasonal produce from their own back garden. Lucy’s daughter Isobel makes all the gluten free cakes. The menu is vegan and gluten free friendly (separate menu). All tortillas can be made gluten free too. Honey Café has an amazing history. Did you know that the café was established in 1933 by Emma and Lucy’s grandmother Glynwen in what was originally a malt house and brewery? And in the 1960s the cellar was home to the Honey Cavern, a live music night club for

Craftsmen and their signatures Robert Thompson of Kilburn in Yorkshire is regarded by many as one of the finest craftsman of English oak furniture of the 20th century. He was born in 1876 and is particularly noted for his work in churches. Intriguingly, he would leave his trademark ‘signature’ around the churches in which he worked; on pews, lecterns and sometimes on the reredos. His signature was a mouse, hence he became known as Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson. It is a favourite game for children to find the mice in a ‘Robert Thompson church’. The family company bearing his name is still based in Kilburn. Robert Thompson is not the only craftsman to leave his signature for the initiated to find and recognise the craftsman’s handiwork. Other craftsmen used other animals or symbols to announce that they were the craftsman responsible for a particular item of furniture, very often in churches. Not to be outdone, Talgarth has its own example of a craftsman leaving his signature to announce his craftsmanship, if you know what to look for and where. Study the walls around the area known as Top Town in Talgarth (the roads around and leading up to St Gwendoline’s Church) and look out for a stone in the shape of a diamond included in the wall. may well be native at Pwyll y Wrach Reserve. There is much to do in October with Volunteer work parties throughout the month and several special events. There will be support for “National Moth Night” which covers the nights of 12th to 14th.The theme will be Ivy which flowers now and is important to moths. Leaf Miner day is at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre on Sunday 15th. I went on this last year and leaf miners are fascinating, if usually overlooked. The Fungi Walk this year is on Saturday 21st – with expert guidance by David Mitchell.

Euonymus Europaeus Spindle Fruits Spindle is named for its wood which was used to make spindles, skewers and pegs. The flowers are tiny little gems that are easily overlooked in the spring but the fruit announces itself as if the tree was flowering. It’s found mainly in the west of our county, probably usually planted, in hedgerows. It

The 23rd to the 27th is “Wild About Gardens Week” and the trust will be supporting this with events, talks and demonstrations about bees and bee keeping around Ystradgynlais. Body love! Do you feel a disconnect from your body? It can actually be very convenient! When we gorge, drink too much or ignore it and let it slide – we’re disconnecting! Then – we RUSH, we get busy, we raise kids… no time to think about how we treat it! Or we may just be sad, so we beat it up further with alcohol or other blockers. Yet our bodies, properly looked after, AND allowing for fun, can see us through to the rest of our days, and in good fettle if we nurture it. The following exercise can be really powerful but TAKE TIME over it! Many women relate to this exercise and get huge benefit from it. We take stock of what our bodies have been through, and how we’ve recovered, despite everything we chuck at it. Deep down I suspect we know we’re ‘pushing our luck’ a lot of the time. Our bodies are complex, incredible: capable of huge adaption and flexibility! New capillaries are grown in the lungs when you exercise them. Muscles atrophy when you stop using them but gain mass as you start to re-use them. You can get stronger, more flexible, mobile, or cardio fit WHATEVER age you start to train. The liver can repair as this organ is

capable of regenerating itself! We ARE what we eat. It’s true! SO: draw a ‘time line’: the beginning is your birth, the end your current age. Divide that up into decades. Start to plot in along that line every ‘event’ you can recall that would have affected your body. Good and bad! FROM BIRTH! Bottle or breast fed? Sickly or easy baby? Childhood illnesses, falls, broken bones, ops, sporting achievements. Teens: periods, acne, illness, eating disorders, self-confidence issues, stress over exams, drug taking, sporting achievements. Adulthood: Hormonal issues, giving birth, Peri menopause, menopause.Yo-Yo dieting, drinking too much. Smoking. Cancer and the other major traumas we tend to go through in this stage of our lives, and how you coped and recovered. Once done can you now write to your body as if it was your best friend and THANK IT for pulling you through everything you’ve done and been through (as well as put it through!). Because you’re still here to tell the tale! Isn’t that fantastic?! Try it! Article supplied by Cat Lawford, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Brecon Baroque Festival - Bigger and better! The Brecon Baroque Festival, which celebrates Vivaldi and the music of Venice this year, runs from 26th - 30th October at venues in and around Brecon.

Now in its 12th year, the Festival is bigger and better than ever before with more venues, more musicians, more music, walks, talks, tours and dancing. There are five concerts given by the acclaimed international baroque violinist Rachel Podger and her award-winning group Brecon Baroque; the vocal ensemble ‘I Fagiolini’ directed by Robert Hollingworth who make their Festival debut; Ensemble Diderot; and a brass group from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff. These world-class concerts, which include a performance by Rachel and Brecon Baroque of Vivaldi’s landmark work, The Four Seasons, on Saturday night, frame a long weekend of music-making. Other events include a pop-up café - Caffe Florian - with live chamber music, Festival Evensong and Eucharist at Brecon Cathedral, plus a lovely guided walk in the Beacons which includes a tour of Penpont House in the Usk Valley as well as the Festival’s annual Baroque tea dance at Theatr Brycheiniog. For more information about the Festival, visit www. breconbaroquefestival.com and for bookings visit www.theatrbrycheiniog.co.uk or call 01877 611622. Following a complete sell-out last year, visitors are advised to book early to avoid disappointment. Photo: Rachel Podger. Credit: Jonas Sacks

Let’s talk about heat pumps

I am constantly asked: “what is the best way to heat my building?” Sometimes there are small details about the nitty gritty of using radiators, underfloor heating or fan coil heaters, but without fail the answer is inevitable – use a heat pump. There are many enduring myths that surround heat pumps, unfortunately caused by installers doing a poor job many years ago – I’m glad to say that there has been much improvement since those times (though there are still many making mistakes). So why are heat pumps so good? We can judge quality in different ways… On running costs, a well installed heat pump will beat every other technology hands down. It will reduce running costs even when compared to natural town gas – it beats oil, LPG and direct electric heating into a cocked hat. In terms of emissions, heat pumps beat all other forms of heating other than locally felled wood. Unfortunately, wood chips and logs are far worse than a heat pump in terms of sooty pollution, and wood pellets are both more polluting and worse for emissions too. The very best heat pumps have a lifespan of over 25 years – approximately double compared to an average boiler, with lower maintenance costs as well. So if you are renovating or building, don’t go for anything else – there are still generous tariffs available for installations until 2020. Government representatives have stated that whilst there is currently a ‘carrot’ for sustainable heating choices, after 2020 there will be a ‘stick’ for fossil fuels instead. The Filling Station

The Filling Station

The original sandwiches on sale at Glasbury Service Station were sadly the bought-in variety, but very soon steps were taken to save local people from eating these disappointing offerings that lacked freshness, flavour and, yes, filling! In April 2013 The Filling Station was established within the Service Station. Now there is a superb variety of breakfast rolls and, sandwiches, filled rolls, baguettes and wraps oozing with freshness, flavour and fillings. Serveyourself hot drinks are available, plus a fantastic range of freshly-made cakes, brownies, flapjacks, sponges, bread pudding and Mars Bar Cake! A daily stream of customers are able to satisfy their hunger on their way to and from work, school, shopping, the local river and the nearby mountains. The Filling Station has proved to be a welcome stopover for ‘filling up’ with food, be it hot or cold, savoury or sweet, to eat in, pre-ordered, or take away. Glasbury Service Station is open 7am–7pm;The Filling Station is open 8am–4pm.

The Poetry Bookshop is on the move Dedicated to poetry since 1979, the Poetry Bookshop in Hay-on-Wye offers the most comprehensive selection of secondhand and antiquarian poetry available for sale in the UK. Being in a roomful is so rare that collectors and poetry lovers from all over the world visit Hay specifically to browse their shelves. Now there’ll be room for events and some new books too. In fact, the shop sold mostly new poetry when it was first opened in spring 1979 by the poets Anne Stevenson and Michael Farley in an outbuilding of Frank Lewis House in the early days of Richard Booth’s Booktown. That same year they moved the business to 22 Broad Street. In 1981 Alan Halsey bought the shop from them; concentrating entirely on secondhand poetry until he left for Sheffield in 1998.

In the summer of that year Chris Prince arrived in Hay to buy books, stayed, found work, and a few months later almost inadvertently took over the Poetry Bookshop. He met Melanie the following year and in spring 2000 together they moved the shop into the ground floor of Ice House in Brook Street. This autumn the shop moves once more to the foot of the Pavement by the clock tower. Chris and Melanie invite you to join them on Saturday 7th October as they open the door for the first time with free readings during the day, and at The Globe later a ticketed party with the original ‘People’s Poet’ John Cooper Clarke.

The Future of our Hills

The Future of our Hills Powys Uplands, Policy & Brexit

The Powys uplands have been shaped by traditional upland farming. Our hills are the backdrop to life in rural Powys and a magnet for walkers, riders and others. As well as being the upland farmers’ livelihood, they play a critical environmental role. Brecon and Radnor CPRW is holding a day seminar, open to all, to discuss the future of our uplands, on Saturday 21st October, 10am to 4pm, at the Knighton Hotel, Knighton, LD7 1BL. Speakers include Professor David Austin, landscape archaeologist and Professor of Archaeology at Lampeter; Justin Hanson from Natural Resources Wales; Julian Jones, Director of the Radnorshire Wildlife Trust; Sorcha Lewis, high nature value farmer; Liz Lewis-Reddy, Head of Living Landscapes, Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust; Professor Michael Woods, rural geographer, Aberystwyth. This event is being organised by the Brecon & Radnor Branch of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural Wales (CPRW). CPRW was established in 1928 and is Wales’ foremost countryside charity. Through its work as an environmental watchdog it aims to secure the protection and improvement of the rural landscape, environment and the well-being of those living in the rural areas of Wales. £5 per person for CPRW members, £10 for non-members. Cost includes refreshment and buffet lunch. For further information and to book telephone 01497 821668.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Recent weeks have been an emotional time for many in our community. As summer returned just in time to give Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains a real boost, many families were getting ready to walk a junior member to school for the first time, while the final Year Six pupils of Talgarth School prepared for their transition to Gwernyfed. I still recall vividly the mix of anticipation and anxiety that accompanied me there on that Williams Coach, after the scorching summer of 1976. Maybe some of you recall it too. Many established pupils also returned to school or progressed to college this autumn with a sheaf of GCSEs to their credit – and they, their parents and teachers can be justly proud of their achievements. I mentioned the last cohort of Talgarth School pupils, because, as most Wye Local readers know, the former Talgarth and Bronllys schools are now sites of the newly founded area primary school, Ysgol y Mynydd Du, whose new governing body meets for the first time on Thursday 19th October. Just last week, I had the pleasure of joining staff and fellow governors at the building site of Ysgol y Mynydd Du on Hay Road. Staff and pupils are looking forward with some excitement to the move next February, as our new school takes shape from week to week. The building manager Marc Clague and the Willmott Dixon team have been exceptionally patient and accommodating to visitors from both existing sites and the wider community. Ysgol y Mynydd Du promises to be a significant community hub for our area. Last week, Brecon High School played host to a packed meeting organised by Welsh Government’s Farming Connect team, and many farmers from Talgarth and its hinterland were in attendance. The event was chaired by former principal of Harper Adams University, Professor Wynne Jones, who now heads up Farming Connect, which aims to drive improvement, resilience and profitability in

Welsh farming. High on the agenda was the new Farm Business Grant (FBG) Scheme, introduced by Welsh Government, to enable farmers across Wales to benefit from financial support to make their businesses more competitive, delivering benefits in terms of animal health, enabling amongst other things safer handling of stock for monitoring and veterinary treatments. I am glad to have played my part, along with FUW and NFU Cymru, in calling for such an accessible, modest scale scheme, funded jointly by Welsh Government and the European Union. Kirsty Williams, our Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, has been able to secure the delivery of this scheme, as part of her progressive agreement with Welsh First Minister, the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM. Over the coming October half term, I am delighted that a number of Talgarth families are travelling to our Italian twin town of Pizzoferrato, as part of the Talgarth Twinning link. At a time when our national life is so riven with division and confusion with regard to Europe, following the Brexit vote, it has been inspirational to witness the openness and friendship shown by people of all ages in our community – and the reciprocal response from our Italian friends. I am increasingly confident that this link will continue to flourish in the months and years to come. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone on 07703 112113, by email on Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, or via Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or Twitter @WmPowell2016. Alternatively, you can come to my next Advice Surgery at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre on Friday 6th October from 5pm, to discuss any issue that is troubling you. Best wishes William

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

Throughout my time in the assembly, increasing jobs in Brecon and Radnorshire has been one of my top priorities. I recognise that small business are the driving force behind the economy here in Mid Wales. In fact, 93% of the businesses in Brecon and Radnorshire have fewer than 10 employees. So it is vital we support and nurture these small businesses. When I speak to business people in the constituency, one of the top issues that keeps coming up are the business rates they have to pay. According to figures I have obtained from the Valuations Office Agency, the total number of businesses in Breconshire and Radnorshire who have been subject to a business rates valuation is 3,813. So it will interest many of you that the Welsh Government is currently consulting the public on proposals for a new permanent small business rates relief (SBRR) scheme for Wales. The new policy will be in place for April next year. It will be a permanent scheme which aims to more effectively target support for small businesses. The consultation proposals include: limiting relief for businesses qualifying for SBRR across multiple properties, reviewing current and future exceptions from SBRR, increasing support for eligible small businesses, providing additional relief for certain sectors which support wider government objectives and what are the longer term considerations for the scheme. You have until October 13th to submit your views. It would be great if as many people from mid Wales as possible took part, so that the views of people in rural areas are heard loud and clear. If you would like more details of how to take part in the consultation, please contact my National Assembly office on 0300 200 7349 or email me at Kirsty.Williams@assembly.wales.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

This week in Westminster has been one of the busiest I have experienced since initially being elected in 2015. As well as other smaller pieces of legislation, MPs voted on the extremely important EU Withdrawal Bill. This is probably the most important constitutional piece of legislation since the European Communities Act of 1972 and the point of the bill is to transfer all EU Law that affects the UK into UK law. Giving our Parliament the power to be able to rid ourselves of the regulations and laws we believe are unnecessary for the country and to keep the regulations and laws that help our nation prosper.

Every Tuesday at 6.00pm BRECON, Bishop Bevan Hall

Every Wednesday at 6.00pm GLANGRWYNEY, Glangrwyney Village Hall, Crickhowell Rd.

Tel Joan: 01873 561344 / 07796 628419

I am utterly dismayed that almost every single Labour, Plaid Cymru and Liberal Democrat MPs opposed the bill. We all know that the vast majority of Liberal and Labour MPs support staying in the European Union and wish we had never held this referendum in the first place. They need to wake up and realise that they can’t stop Brexit and that the democratic will of the British people must be respected. If they refuse to respect the referendum result, then they would be undermining the very fabric of our precious parliamentary democracy. A number of Labour MPs defied their whips and voted in favour of this bill as they realised the electoral significance of this vote. Many of their constituencies voted in favour of Brexit and they must represent the views of their constituents in the aftermath of a referendum result. It’s sad to see Jeremy Corbyn, who privately supports Brexit, being pushed to reject the bill by his pro-EU MPs. He should stand by his beliefs no matter how unpopular they may be in his own party. However, the Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru voted on mass against the bill in a cynical attempt to delay Brexit. I hope to see the Assembly Member for Brecon and Radnorshire condemn her party’s attempt at disrupting and delaying Brexit.

Caledonian Caledonian Market Market, Brecon

No, it is not Scottish! The name Caledonian comes from the Islington Cattle and General Market established in 1855, which closed at the end of World War II in 1945. It was especially noted for miscellaneous secondhand goods, and was much frequented by bargain hunters. This is a pretty good description of what will happen on the 4th November in the Market Hall, star ting at 11am. (Admission £1). By going there on this date, you can see why Brecon has a market with that title. It is run by the Rotary Club of Brecon. When it was started well over 30 years ago, the Caledonian Market was a small scale affair and yielded £1282 for charity. Last year, it raised nearly £11000 for charity, and it was a matter of all Rotarian hands and their friends

on deck, with the weeks preceding the event being the time when all manner of saleable items were collected from donors from all over the locality. This year, there is one telephone number to ring for collection arrangements to be settled, and apart from beds, large scale furniture and old TVs, videos and tapes, anything else which might have a sale value, however small, is acceptable. The last day for collections to be made will be Wednesday 1st November. The telephone number to use is 01874 636246. People say that Brecon’s Caledonian Market is the best opportunity to dispose of useable but unwanted items, and pick up at a pittance something that you wanted but they didn’t!

News from... News from Black Mountains Lions Club The Hay-on-Wye Vintage Steam Rally draws everyone from miles around as well as visitors holidaying in the Brecon and Black Mountains area. The Black Mountains Lions always have a couple of stalls with a Tombola and Lions and we are delighted to say that the sun shone. We sported our new banners and gazebo which could probably be seen from the mountain tops.

It drew lots of people anxious to ‘have a go’ at winning a little lion as they seem to have become a collectable item in the area. The Tombola was packed with people trying to win anything from a bottle of wine to a dishcloth! Everyone knows that Lions collect spectacles – but what do we do with the cases? Sell them! At £2 a time they went like hotcakes. We raised just under £500 which wasn’t bad at 50p for a Lion ticket, or £1 for 4 tickets at the Tombola – all had to end with a 5. We all but sold out. We all had a great time, refreshed occasionally with coffees and beefburgers. Looking forward to next year already. News from Drover Cycles Are you put off cycling by hills, headwinds or lack of fitness? It can be daunting to get started and feel like really hard work! Electric bikes offer a brilliant solution – virtually all the benefits of regular cycling but without the strain on lungs and legs. E-bikes are perfect as part of a strategy to get fit, lose weight or regain strength and fitness after an operation or

illness. Regular cyclists getting on in years will find they can still complete their favourite routes thanks to battery-assisted pedalling. Riding an e-bike isn’t ‘cheating’ and in fact our experience is that e-bike owners use their bike more often for the simple reason that electric bikes are really, really fun to ride! On a modern e-bike you can easily ride 25 miles – with some models up to 100 miles – on a single charge. This means an e-bike is a practical, lowcarbon alternative to a car whether for shopping, commuting or an active school run. At Drover Cycles we stock a range of e-bike brands including Batribike, Merida, Moustache, Ridgeback and Saracen with everything from leisure bikes to full-suspension MTBs. Pop in for a chat and a no-obligation test ride and keep an eye on our Facebook page for the latest arrivals, news and demo days! Remember, buying from your local bike shop means you get back-up, servicing and after-sales care, especially important for electric bikes. Our workshop is equipped with the relevant diagnostic systems to fully support and look after our e-bike customers.

News from Fairtrade Hay Diary date! Join Fairtrade Hay and lots of wonderful Fair Traders at our annual Christmas market on Sunday 26th November in Hay’s butter market. There will be plenty of festive fun and you’ll know that your Christmas shopping benefits vulnerable people in developing countries, as well as providing special gifts for your loved ones. Amongst others, we’ll have beautiful African crafts from Love Zimbabwe; Tools for Self Reliance for all your garden tool needs; Zaytoun’s delicious olive oil and more; Jump4Timbuktu’s stunning jewellery from Hay’s twin town; Dragon’s Garden’s snug Nepalese woollens and Eachday’s exciting new products from Swaziland. Our small group of Fair Trade supporters are reeling from the news that our founder and long-standing chair, Jo Eliot, is leaving us for sunnier climes. Jo has been instrumental in Hay’s status as a Fairtrade town, and for the ongoing promotion of fair trade issues. We’re all hugely grateful for her hard work and will be very sorry to see her go. Jo isn’t leaving until next year, so we have another Wye Local

You can also visit our Facebook page @FairtradeHay for updates.

the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. Mrs McGorrin and Mrs Schofield, our D of E leaders, organise the scheme which provides students with this life-changing opportunity. Demand remains high for the D of E Awards with increasing numbers of students in the school wanting to take part in the world’s leading youth achievement award. The D of E awards provide challenging, fun and rewarding experiences and are highly valued by employers and universities alike. This is only one of the many extra-curricular opportunities available to our students. For more information see our half-termly newsletters which are published on our website: www.gwernyfed-hs.com. News from Hay Castle Trust Rural Funding for Hay Castle Hay Castle received good news recently as The Big Lottery Rural Programme awarded a grant of £76,160 under their community grants scheme. This funding will help support the creation of a culturally and economically vibrant centre for the arts and

learning in our community. The area around Hay is quite rural, public transport by bus is limited, and isolation can be a serious social issue. Access to arts, culture and creative learning facilities is also limited. The Hay Town Plan notes that there is a need for a community hub within the town: “There was an almost unanimous feeling (99% of respondents) that Hay did not have anywhere that could be called ‘the centre of the community’. More than half of you felt that the community was more fragmented than it used to be”. Hay Castle is located at the very heart of Hay and will serve as a

natural gathering place for the community to come together. Our aim is to develop a programme of activities to engage all sectors of the community, from toddlers to young farmers, families and older people. A gallery of high conservation and environmental standards will enable works of national importance to be borrowed from galleries and museums. We have a rich resource of talent in the area and workshops in the Castle over the past few years have shown the viability and benefit of knowledge and skill sharing. There will be space for music and performing arts, writing workshops, bookbinding, printmaking, calligraphy, and arts and crafts that have to do with the written word. The Big Lottery Rural Communities grant brings the project ever closer to reaching its funding goal. Building work is expected to start towards the end of the year once lead contractors have been appointed. News from Hay Cheese Market/Hay Markets Summer is over and what a lovely lot of visitors to Hay Market we’ve had. Now our thoughts turn

to autumn, and the great fruit and veg, much of it seasonal, from Primrose Farm, 100% Hay and Roxy, not forgetting the delicious warming pies from Pie Creator and Bernie. As the colder evenings draw in it’s time to hunker down with a casserole or stew, with meats from C.George Butchers or Weobley Ash, perhaps with an added kick from Parva Spices chilli sauces. Of course all meals should have bread, and most definitely cakes, from Alex Gooch, Kate’s Bakery, Jean Phillippe or Lucretia. Whilst you rest from shopping, a coffee from Method, a soup from Hay Broth or a falafel from Bill will help revive you before your amble around the rest of the stalls, with thoughts turning to Christmas (only 3 months to go!)… In our next update, we will highlight more shopping ideas for Christmas presents from our amazing traders. News from U3A Hay Here in the Welsh Marches, we are surrounded by beautiful old buildings which hold a wealth of history, but what do we really know about them? Don’t miss the next meeting of U3A Hay on Tuesday 17th October at 10.30am, when Duncan James will explain the detective work that is required to unlock the past and understand historic buildings in his presentation of Researching TimberFramed Buildings. With his own history of over 20 years of unearthing the secrets of these buildings and their occupants, this will be a fascinating insight into what is often hidden behind a façade, and how much buildings change over the years, but do not always disappear. At 1.30pm, after lunch, by popular request, John Price will return to show Part II of his wonderful collection of Local Interest Media, which promises to be just as entertaining and engaging as the first part, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed! We do hope that you will join us and we look forward to seeing you in the Music Room at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am, and lunch from 12.15pm. The entrance fee is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. For further information, phone Tricia Wordley on 01497 821 595.

Wye Local would like to thank the volunteers at The HayDay Café for everything they do to help people living with dementia throughout the year. Visitors to the cafés are being encouraged by a poet from Hereford Courtyard to write their own poetry, and some of them will appear in Poem Corner quite regularly. A huge thank you from us all at Wye Local.
