We really do have a bustling read for you. It seems a good proportion of the focus is on booze. I promise it wasn’t intentional! Read all about Carrot & Wine Stores – page 3, Beer Revolution – page 8, and Fair Oak Cider – page 25. If you have a certain person on your gift list who likes a tipple or two, all these businesses stock wonderful beers and ciders – great for giving, or for drinking yourself! Our ‘Get to really know’ this month is Gill, our credit controller. Gill joined CariAds Local Ltd earlier this year: she is a delight to work alongside and such a valuable addition to our team. BUSINESS PROFILE
Carrot & Wine Stores yet, however we were entered into the Farm Shop & Deli Show Awards 2018 – we’re awaiting the judges decision, so fingers crossed. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? Be prepared and be adaptable. We’ve had all sorts of things go wrong, that were out of our control, and we’ve had to adapt pretty quickly – for example on our first day of trading our till system fused the electrics! We had a store full of customers and no lights or till. Everyone was amazing and patient until we replaced the fuse and it was all go again. Carrot & Wine Stores was set up in 2017 by Mark Burch, with a passion for great local food and produce and a determination to help reduce food miles. Carrot & Wine now employs 12 people across two stores. Covering an area of 15 miles around Hay-on-Wye, their customers are everyone and anyone who likes to eat fresh food with reduced food miles at an affordable price. When was the business started? This year. What made you set up the business? Gordon (business consultant) and I had spoken about the need for somewhere like Carrot & Wine Stores, which stands up for the smaller producers. Our aim is to stock local produce, from local people, alongside everyday items like baked beans. Our goal is to help other small businesses by using their products in our stores, local bread, milk, produce and of course our in-house hand-made pies (which are to die for!) Where are you based? We currently have two stores, our new store in Whitney-on-Wye and our other store in Wormelow. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Yes, our goal is to have five Carrot & Wine Stores within five years. All focusing on promoting local produce, which will ultimately help the local economy. How many staff do you employ? Currently 12 staff across the two stores. Have you won any awards in your business? Not
What has been the biggest help to building your business up? The local community. Without their support and encouragement none of this would have been possible, so a huge thanks to them all! List five goals on your business to-do list: Make sure that we ‘hit the mark’ with what our customers expect, become completely organic, ensure that we have happy staff (in our experience happy staff = happy customers), expand the business as planned and continue to have fun whilst we’re doing it. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? I’ve never been one for marketing, however since starting and having to do everything between us I’ve developed a passion and a flare for promoting/marketing and I’m really enjoying doing it. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? We have had a few hiccups, like the one already mentioned. We held an interview for staff at the current store at our Wormelow store – one interviewee came, it all went well and then she drove over the flower bed on the way out. She still got the job because she’s amazing! Sum your business up in five words: Organic, fresh, eco-friendly, welcoming and amazing (I am biased!) For more details about Carrot & Wine Stores, please see their advert on the back cover.

New in Town: Michael Magyar Painting & Decorating What’s the name of the business? M. Magyar Painting & Decorating. Where are you based or what is the area in which you work? I’m based in Hay-on-Wye but I’m usually working in South Wales, Hereford and around the Ross-on-Wye area. Why the Hay area? I moved here in November 2016 and love the place. It would be nice to have local work and to get to know more local people. Why did you decide to start this business? Growing up, back in the day, I can remember my mum always painting or wallpapering the house top to bottom for many years. She loved a challenge. So I suppose I got the bug from my mum. What are some of challenges you’ve encountered? Life is one big challenge as we all know. For me, whether it’s painting or papering, I just love my job. I could do it in my sleep. Now there’s a challenge. What do you wish you had known before you started? Advertising! Getting as much advertising out there as possible.

Is this the first business you have launched? Yes. What type of education or experience helped you to start and run this business? Having a Level 2 NVQ helped me with routine organising and management. As for skill, that comes with experience and the people I’ve worked with over the years. Describe a typical day in your business. Music...and get on with it. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Never

REVIEW
Bottle and tap at Beer Revolution On a dark, dank November evening, Clare and I were invited along to Beer Revolution, slap bang in the centre of Hay, by co-owner Rob Eveleigh, to sample some of the locally produced craft beers and ciders they have to offer. We were greeted by Rob as we entered and soon introduced to Luke Manifold, the brewer from Haybased brewery Lucky 7, which produces a great selection of forever-changing modern small batch beers. First on our ‘tasting menu’ was Lucky 7’s ‘SIPA’, a 4.6% bottle-conditioned session IPA hopped with Cascade, Mosaic and Nelson, giving it a delicious fruity aroma and taste. Next up was Luke’s ‘Café Mocha’, a coffee-infused stout at 6.7%. The use of lactose – milk sugar – in this beer gives it a rich sweetness and full body; it was a delight to drink! I tried two more from the draught taps – ‘Yorkshire Square’, a saison style beer, and ‘Rooting Around’, a
brown ale with figs – and found both of them to be very enjoyable. Also on tap was a cider from the Herefordshirebased producer Oliver’s. Bottles from other local producers such as Gwatkins, Orgasmic, Little Pomona and Skyborry lined the shelves. Home-made pizzas are served on Fridays and Saturdays, with a splendid menu of dishes including Welsh rarebit and Cuban sandwiches available at other times. With over 200 bottled beers and ciders in stock there is something to suit everyone’s palate. I suggest you check out their website – www.beerrevolution.co.uk – or even better, make a visit to meet Rob and partner Emily there. Beer Revolution reviewed by Robert Williams

Delicious food at the Kinnersley Arms
Thought you would all like to know that the Kinnersley Arms has taken on a huge transformation since we all visited there last. These days there is modern decor in the bar and dining room, genial hosts, superb food and great service. We were given the warmest of welcomes by the new owners, sisters Cheryl and Janet, and also by Roy, an ex-London fireman who says his job description is chief bulb-changer... A great welcome too from the friendly local drinkers, not to mention the extremely memorable welcome from one particular terrier (I’ll get over it one day I’m sure!) Bad luck and misfortune created a desire for the girls to escape to the country and they both say that life is better already. Janet and Cheryl moved into this family-friendly freehouse in the hamlet of Kinnersley in the west of Herefordshire, from Denham in Buckinghamshire in August 2016 and after a lot of refurbishment they launched exactly one year later, hosting an Opening Night on the glorious twelfth. After deciding on a bottle of Argentinian Malbec we sat at the bar studying the menu and the specials board. Fabulous inexpensive choices from the chalkboard and the menu, which includes starters, sandwiches, baked (jacket) potatoes, salads, food from the grill, main courses, a children’s menu, side dishes and sauces, puddings, cheese and the usual tea and coffee, as well as a great choice of beverages and
alcoholic drinks, of course. The Sunday lunch menu looks interesting and one can pre-order a ‘trio’ of roasts, beef, chicken and pork with Bramley apple sauce, stuffing and Yorkshire pudding! They also cater for vegetarians. Janet showed us to our table by the window not far from the glorious woodburner, under a large clock. Robert chose a starter of crisp pork belly which is twice cooked pork served with celeriac remoulade and Perl Las sauce. Succulent and tasty, he said. My plump mussels with the most fabulous cream sauce and dipping bread were the best I’ve had for a long time. Delicious. My main course of steak and ale (Butty Bach) pie was really good. Lots of braised Herefordshire steak with excellent pastry and extra gravy (someone once complained that it contained too much meat!). It came with cabbage, carrot, mange-tout, peas, mashed potato and celeriac mash. Perfect aldente vegetables. That was a great supper, and by the way, arrive hungry. If I had served this up to my friends or family I would have been really proud of myself. Robert’s main course of fish and chips was fabulous. Beer-battered cod with beef dripping fried chips. One can choose garden or mushy peas. All the food here is good value. Starters range from £3 to £5.50. Main courses from £6.50 to £8.75 and all puddings are £5. Grill prices vary from £5.95 for the Vegetarian Burger up to £26 for the 14oz Sirloin Steak. A 6oz steak is £14. We think it’s excellent value here. Everything is sourced locally when possible. We were both too full to even contemplate pudding. I even said no to a creme brûlée, which

is my favourite pudding in the world. Later, Robin the marvellous chef brought out a surprise for us. A selection of five ice-creams, which he had made himself, of course. We played a game, trying to guess the flavours, but failed miserably. Not surprising really as they were rather unusual; honey, mango & chilli, strawberries & cream, damson & aniseed and the last one was a duo of milk and white chocolate. All to absolutely die for! We had a lovely fun evening here and I highly recommend a visit with friends and family. Even if you don’t go now, pay them a visit during the warmer days so that you can enjoy the garden. Local Talent: Sue Williams Type of artist? Landscape artist – painting in acrylic. Where can your work be seen? To date I have shown at Glasbury Arts,Theatr Brycheiniog and The Ardent Gallery, and I also had a small show in my Mum’s front living room in Bear Street in Hay during the Hay Festival Winter Weekend last year, which was very successful! What other local artists do you admire? I have met some wonderful local artists through the Glasbury Arts group, and I admire anyone who is out there doing their own thing and enjoying it. How long have you been an artist? Nearly two years. For Christmas 2016 my husband Anthony bought me a six-week course at Hereford Art College, and since then I haven’t stopped! This year he has helped to build me a studio in our garden… he didn’t know what he was starting! Where did you train or gain experience? The above course is the only formal input I have had, apart from a couple of day courses at Chapel Cottage Studio near Abergavenny. My good friend Ron Moore, an artist, has been extremely helpful to me, and apart from that, YouTube is a mine of information! Artist statement: Taking up painting two years ago, after 38 years working for a high street bank, has been life-changing for me. I only wish I had done it earlier. I had no idea that I could paint at all, until the first time I tried. And I don’t think there was anyone more surprised than me. These days I try and paint every day, fitting it in alongside looking after my two beautiful grandchildren, Isabelle and William. For the future my next goal is the Glasbury Arts Show in February 2018, and I am also keen to have my work on show somewhere locally…any ideas gratefully received! Cheeky Monkeys Branch Out! News of a brand new nursery setting opening this coming January will be music to the ears of parents seeking a friendly, reliable, trustworthy and fun environment for their little ones. Llyswen Cheeky Monkeys, a well established out of school club based in Llyswen Primary school has been providing outstanding childcare for children aged 3-12 years since 2003; before, after school and during all school holidays. The art of soap making
Learn how to make natural aroma-therapeutic soap at home.
Treat someone special to a soap making experience. A one to one lesson where you create your own hot process soap to take home with you. Soap making can be a very therapeutic experience, from weighing the natural ingredients, choosing and blending the aromatherapy oils to adding chosen botanicals and butters to suit your skin and the season.
www.castellodehaye.com
Once mastered, hot process is a lovely way of making soap, easily and effortlessly at home. It has a lovely handmade texture, takes aromatherapy scents very well and most importantly is ready to cut up and take home with you. Slice the soap to your preferred size and take home 1kg of soap (equivalent to 10 bars). The art of soap making can be an absorbing and creative activity, a way of working with your hands, head and heart in unison, to express your individuality.

Great Porthamal, situated on the outskirts of Talgarth on the Hay Road, hides a wealth of history within its protected ancient walls. Porthamal was built in the late 15th century as a major medieval manor house for Roger, second son of Sir Roger Vaughan of Tretower. The manor was built within a walled enclosure defended by a two storey gatehouse.

The Vaughan family moved within royal circles; Henry VII stayed there on his way to the battle of Bosworth. During Henry VIII’s reign Sir William Vaughan became the first High Sheriff of Brecknock in 1540; his son Sir Roger was High Sheriff in 1551. Sir Roger was also a member of parliament, 1553–62. William received notable visitors at Porthamal including the historian John Leland and bishop Rowland Lee who praised William’s hospitality to his master Thomas Cromwell. Royal pardons reveal that the Vaughan family were not immune from criminal accusations. The first squire of Porthamal, Roger, received his royal pardon from Henry VIII. His supposed crime is not known. Catherine, William’s widow, was in May 1553 pardoned for being an accessory to a murder, and her son Sir Roger was pardoned in December 1553 by Queen Mary. Were they involved in the same supposed crime? He was next pardoned by Elizabeth 1 in 1559 and was later accused of ‘maintaining a Herefordshire murderer in association with a priest suspected of popish practices’. ‘If only walls could talk’; what a wealth of history we could learn from the ‘rare domestic gatehouse’ and ‘one of the more remarkable medieval houses of Wales’! Horse-powered in Herefordshire Two Gypsy Cobs from Llanigon have brought history back to life on a Golden Valley farm. The 17th-century cider mill and press at Fair Oak had stood unused for a hundred years until Hilary Engel, who owns the mill with her husband Matthew, ‘just wanted to get it going.’ With the help of skilful friends and neighbours, some of whom used to make cider like this in their youth, the mill and press were restored to working order in 2012. But the next challenge was to find a horse: as, despite the surge in interest in craft cidermaking, no one else was using a horse-drawn mill. Then Wendy and John Lloyd, who breed Gypsy Cobs high up in the hills below Hay Bluff, heard the story; and Wendy thought that her young stallion, Pye, might be willing to turn the giant stone mill wheel. And although the mill house is so dark and confined – and so strange to a horse who spends most of his life grazing the hillside with his mares – Pye did the job for three years, producing the first Fair Oak cider. Pye had some human assistance in the cidermaking, mostly from Alan McCardle of St Margarets, who, having helped to restore the mill, was inspired to learn how to work it. This year at the annual open weekend, both Pye and Alan shared their expertise with new recruits. A new horse, Tommy, came to work the mill for
the first time: and although he had never worn a working collar before, he took it in his stride. Despite the steady stream of visitors, he trod calmly in the groove in the cobbled floor where generations of horses had gone before. And in charge of the press was Ed Budd of Home Farm, Dorstone, who has joined the Fair Oak team, learning to make cider to complement his Mangalitza and Gloucester Old Spot pork. Alan and Ed were excited this year to be able to make a single-variety pressing of Kingston Black apples for the first time. ‘It should be good,’ said Alan. ‘But we won’t know how it’s turned out until next summer.’ Even when the horses are not working, Fair Oak Cider is open by appointment for cider tasting and sales at Fair Oak, Bacton, Herefordshire HR2 0AT. Free local delivery for 5, 10 and 20-litre party boxes. Contact them on 01981 241 210. Photo: John and Wendy Lloyd introduce Tommy to the confined space of the mill house.

Wild in December
Asplenium Trichomanes Maidenhair Spleenwort Several of the Spleeenwort family of ferns adorn our walls all year round. There are more than one of these in this picture, but the dominant fronds are those of Maidenhair Spleenwort. These ferns grow on natural rocks in Brecknock where they are truly native but are, even here, found most on manmade walls and buildings as in this picture from an
abandoned building on the Epynt in mid-December. The name derives from the old belief, based on the doctrine of signatures, that the fern was useful for disorders of the spleen. Most plants with “wort” in their name were believed to have curative properties at one time. The Brecknock Wildlife Trust Christmas Meal will be held at the Castle Hotel on Friday 8th at 7pm. Then a Winter Walk on Monday 11th at Banwen Ponds will include making natural Christmas wreaths including free lunch, hot drinks and mince pies. Volunteer Work Parties continue through the month: Friday 1st: Scrub clearance at Wern Plemys Nature Reserve. Tuesday 5th: Woodland coppicing at BWT Pwll-yWrach Nature Reserve. Friday 15th: More scrub clearance at Wern Plemys. Tuesday 19th: Hedge laying at BWT Cae Pwll y Bo Nature Reserve. Check full details at: bit.ly/BWTdiary

The truth about slim people Rarely do I get excited by any articles in the daily press. Often sensationalist and ‘news for the sake of news’, you’ll find major contradictions within the same issue! HOWEVER recently I read one that got me totally fired up! Based on a forthcoming TV programme (Channel 4’s The Truth About Slim People), it practically epitomised all I’ve ever said on the basics of my subjects (namely: nutrition and fitness). My last 4 articles here were neatly summarised in a programme I hadn’t even watched yet! I didn’t agree with EVERYTHING in this programme (as usual – it was focused on SIZE to the exclusion of HEALTH), but many points remained salient: ‘AnneMarie, 42, knows that her diet is unhealthy and despite never having exercised, she maintains a healthy nine stone weight and is a UK size eight’. Everything from her weight fluctuations to her sleeping patterns to her stools were examined on the show. They filmed over 5 days (then 5 more covertly). They observed: while she does not exercise now (she had danced previously), her slim frame is a mystery to those around her (‘she’d catch a taxi to the loo’)! Her metabolism is tested: it’s
normal. During filming it becomes clear she doesn’t eat late at night, snack, or is an emotional eater. Refreshingly she says: “I eat what I feel like eating and I don’t get too hung up on it” (HOORAY!). In addition – when her physical activity levels were studied, scientists found that despite working in a supposedly sedentary desk job, she never sits still, fidgets constantly, and subsequently expends more calories than most people simply from sitting in her chair! After further analysis, experts further concluded that her diet was more balanced than you’d suppose: after indulging in a heavy meal, the next day she subconsciously consumed less food, which experts cited as a significant factor in terms of weight gain. My take on this? The two studied seemed to have a built-in control system, are active, sleep well and have good bacteria in their gut. They ate mainly savoury foods (junk food was in there and I’d only venture: you don’t want to be slim yet have a heart attack do you?!).Want more on all this? Heating and maintenance At this time as the weather gets colder it is always wise to consider servicing and maintaining your heating systems, whether it is an oil/gas boiler or heat pump. Also it is important to make sure your solar thermal system is filled with antifreeze to prevent expensive damage with sub-zero temperatures on the roof. It is a sad fact that much energy is wasted by people who do not have proper controls in place on their central heating system, or do not understand how to use them…nearly 50% of people admit to never changing the timing of the heating controls from the point of moving into their house; so here are some tips to keep heating your home as cheap as possible. 1: Keep all your systems maintained – service the boiler every two years as a minimum. 2: Use up-to-date heating controls which allow you to heat the cylinder and hot water separately to suit your lifestyle. 3: If you don’t have a room thermostat then you should consider upgrading immediately. 4: For each degree you increase the room temperature you increase your fuel spend by 10%. 5: Your body will adapt to lower temperatures in the house within a couple of days. 18 degrees should be comfortable for most people, and putting the thermostat on 25 degrees won’t make it get hotter any quicker! 6: Use thermostatic radiator valves to control room temperatures better, especially those which are not used frequently. For advice and action – get in touch with a heating specialist… Article supplied by Ben Whittle of Specialist Energy

Late night opening in Hay! A wise person once said, “It is a truth universally acknowledged that all things necessary for Christmas present solutions are to be found in Hay-on-Wye.” To that tune, Hay Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce LATE NIGHT OPENING at lots of our brilliant independent shops this year for Christmas. Until 8pm every Thursday from 30th November to 21st December. This will give us all even more opportunities to support our hardworking small businesses during the festive season and buy great gifts, produce and treats locally. There’s also talk of choirs singing carols, steaming hot chocolate and kissing under the mistletoe! Check out Hay on Wye Chamber of Commerce on Facebook as well as their website for details and a list of which shops are joining in: http://hayonwyechamber.co.uk/christmas.Those who are joining in will also post ‘We’re in!’ on their social media, so stay tuned... Bright ideas for festive lighting It used to be a pre-Christmas ritual when it came to decorating the tree. Unpack last year’s lights. Untangle lights. Switch on. Nothing happens. Replace every bulb in turn. Lights work. Put lights on tree. Lights stop working. Lose temper. Go and buy a new set. Thankfully, that’s all changed, due largely to LEDs (light emitting diodes) which have replaced the old filament bulbs, their dodgy lamp holders and fragile wires in virtually all types of festive illuminations. However, the benefits of LEDs don’t stop at reliability. They consume considerably less electricity, making them kinder on the environment and your pocket. Operating at low voltage, they are cool to the touch and therefore much safer to use right around the home. Typically, a set of 200 LED lamps will cost just one tenth of a penny per hour to run. This means that using them for an average of 8 hours a day over a one-month period will cost less than 25p!
If traditional outdoor lights are more your thing, then there are a range of accessories available to make all your installations simple and safe. These include packs of gutter hooks and clips to attach icicle lights, rope lights and conventional lights neatly and securely in place; cable reels and extension sockets with thermal cut-out and anti-surge protection; and Dribox, a durable, weatherproof enclosure designed to house a 4-socket extension block, plug tops and transformers. You can also make use of 24-hour timers and remote-control plug sockets, both of which are useful year-round accessories for controlling a variety of electrical appliances. And finally, while you’re shopping, why not treat yourself to a Christmas lights storage reel? Because, as we all know, Christmas lights never fit back in the box they came in...so instead you can store them, tangle-free, on a handy reel ready for next year!

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I gather my thoughts for this last Wye Local column of 2017, there has been a distinct autumn chill in the air for several days. The cold bright sunshine that we saw recently at the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday and the need to defrost the car in early morning both herald the imminent onset of winter. One local event that signposts the run up to Christmas each year is the Talgarth Luncheon Club Christmas lunch, which falls this time on Tuesday 5th December. It will be a special, but also a poignant, occasion for us this year. The volunteers always arrive at the Town Hall from early morning to ensure that all the preparations are in place. And this celebration comes only a few weeks after the very same team was out in force to host the sixth annual afternoon tea, in memory of the late Brian Kite, which raised £1,860 towards Macmillan Cancer Support, making an impressive total of well over £10,000 over the past six years. This is thanks to the efforts of all the helpers, who contribute in so many ways to our community. Alan Tandy, Macmillan’s Development Manager for Mid and North Wales, was in attendance again to express his appreciation. Although he retires this year, Alan expressed the hope that he might be invited back as a guest in the future. It is the very same spirit of volunteering that is demonstrated by Talgarth Christmas Lights Group, whose hard work over many weeks will be lighting up our town in the run up to Christmas. On Sunday 29th October, the Gwernyfed Ladies Rugby match against Whitland Ladies was a very special fixture, as it marked Rosie Snape’s 100th cap for Gwernyfed. It was a proud occasion for Rosie, Gordon her husband and coach, and their daughters Lily and Megan. Steffan and I joined a strong turnout at Trefecca Road to cheer her on and it was great to see a Scrum 5 film crew in attendance to catch
some of the highlights and to interview Rosie. Following the distressing wave of van break ins and thefts around Talgarth, I have been working with the Dyfed-Powys Neighbourhood Police Team and Powys County Council’s street lighting section to assess what measures can help to improve security. On another front, at the recent Full Council meeting, I tabled a question to the Cabinet Member for Corporate Property, Cllr Phyl Davies, stressing the importance of openness and accountability on the part of the County Council, when it comes to the disposal of its own assets. It is vital that the perspective of Town and Community Councils and local residents is taken on board. In the local context, the fate of School Field off Woodlands Avenue and the historic former Talgarth School will naturally be issues of genuine concern. I look forward to seeing many of you in the coming weeks, at one of the several community events signalling the season of Advent. The Christmas Market is being held at Talgarth Town Hall on Saturday 2nd December from 10am until 4pm, ahead of the Christmas Lights switch-on that evening. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issues of concern, please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112113 or by email: Cllr.william.powell@powys.gov.uk. Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday 8th December from 5pm at Talgarth TiRC.You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue that is troubling you, at this busy time of year. Happy Christmas William

NHS-funded Flu vaccinations
Carl Sargeant The National Assembly was rocked in November with the news of the tragic death of Carl Sargeant. Not only was Carl a dedicated local Assembly Member, but he was an effective government minister who had a significant impact across political life at a national and community level. Carl was a good friend of mine for many years and he will be sorely missed. My thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this incredibly difficult time. Suicide is a topic, as a society, we talk about far too infrequently. It is the single biggest killer of men aged under 45 in the UK. The Samaritans are a fantastic organisation with dedicated and well trained volunteers who are there to help people at a time of crisis.
available from 2 October 2017 No appointment necessary, but please call to check availability.
People who are at increased risk of problems if they catch flu can have a flu vaccine on the NHS. Ask us about having a FREE NHS flu vaccination if: • You are aged 65 years and over • You have chronic respiratory disease (COPD or Asthma which requires continuous or repeated use of steroids) • You have chronic heart, kidney, liver or neurological (stroke, TIA etc) disease, diabetes, or immunosuppression • You are pregnant (any trimester) • You live in a long-stay care facility. I continue to lobby the UK government to reduce VAT for tourism businesses and have written to the Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, to ask him to introduce this in his upcoming budget. Research has shown that a reduction of VAT for tourism to 5% would contribute an extra £4.6 billion to the treasury over ten years and create 121,000 extra jobs across the UK. The UK is currently one of only 4 EU countries which does not take advantage of variable VAT rates for tourism. This needs to change. If you would like to discuss these or any other issues with me, please email me at Kirsty.Williams@ assembly.wales or call my office on 01874 625 739.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Firstly, I would like to take the opportunity to pay my respects to those who lost their lives in the dreadful fire in Llangammarch Wells. This is an appalling tragedy that has come as a shock to us all in Brecon and Radnorshire. My thoughts are with the family and friends of those who lost their lives in this heart breaking fire. Not a week goes by where I am not invited to attend an event somewhere in Brecon and Radnorshire. Our constituency is the second largest in England and Wales, and this fact encourages me to ensure that I travel to even the remotest patches, attending events in all corners of our superb constituency. In just one weekend I went from attending an event with Her Royal Highness Princess Ann, to holding seven surgery meetings in Brecon and Talgarth, to flipping burgers and filling hot dogs at the Black Mountain Lions Club at the Annual Fireworks Display in Clyro. In addition, I attended the Welsh Agriculture: Embracing Change for Success Conference in Llandrindod Wells and visited the annual Caladonian Market in Brecon Market on Saturday afternoon. Throughout October, I attended dozens of events and held four surgery days across Brecon and Radnorshire in Builth, Brecon,Talgarth andYstradgynlais. Surgeries provide me with the opportunity to listen to my constituents and to help them resolve any issues that they may have. This is the backbone of a MPs work and most people don’t always get to see this element of my job. Around my voting and committee duties in Westminster, I also regularly send out invitations to organisations across Brecon and Radnorshire offering them a tour of Parliament. Since Parliament re-opened in September, I have given private tours to many constituents, as well as large groups from Knighton Town Council and Edw Valley Young Farmers Club with many more Community Councils and Young Farmer’s Clubs booked in over the upcoming months. Many don’t initially recognise attending events and holding surgeries as an important role in the life of an MP. However for me, these are two of the most integral elements for being a truly representative Member of Parliament for the people of this great constituency.

Drew Barker-Wright Charity Update On 1st October 2017 #TeamDrew took part in the Cardiff Half Marathon in memory of four-year-old Drew Barker-Wright, who lost his life to an ultra rare childhood cancer earlier this year. #TeamDrew consisted of absolute beginners and seasoned runners, who all gave their time and energy to raise money to support the charity set up in Drews’ name.
plan to raise money to fund research projects and support families affected by this disease. Mel and Jon would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who ran on the day, their families who supported them, and all those who donated to the cause.
It was a warm and rainy start to the day, but spirits were not dampened and everyone turned up raring to go. It was an emotional day for all involved and all #TeamDrew runners crossed the finish line. The family are so proud to announce that the team’s united efforts have raised just over £17,000, with a few more donations still to come. Paediatric Chordoma affects 1 in 20 million children worldwide annually and research into the disease is grossly underfunded. Through the charity, the family

News from Bronllys Ward by Karen Laurie-Parry, Powys County Councillor for Bronllys Ward A Youth & Adult Exchange, Ward Eisteddfod, Area Improvement Working Groups, and County Councillor monthly drop-in surgeries are part of a vision to share with you. I am now a Governor at Gwernyfed High School and Archdeacon Griffiths School, Llyswen, and also a member of the Friends of Ysgol Mynydd Du. I have nominated Mrs Patricia Wormleighton, who is a retired headteacher, Community Councillor, and lives in Bronllys, to represent the LEA, on the Board of Governors for Ysgol y Mynydd Du. This will be the last year for pupils at Bronllys School to celebrate the end of term in their village location, which will be a milestone to record in Bronllys history. It is extremely pleasing that the Headteacher at Ysgol Mynydd Du is Mrs Sam Toone, who our Bronllys pupils already know.

News from Fairtrade Hay
News from Black Mountains Lions Club Very many thanks to all who attended the Black Mountains Lions annual bonfire and fireworks display in 2017. We had another very successful display. Thanks to all our fellow Lions for their unstinted voluntary work that makes this a truly enjoyable event.
Hay’s annual Fairtrade Christmas Fair is taking place on Saturday 16th December – for more details see the article and advert in this issue’s Christmas Shopping section. Come along to get all your Fairtade presents. Another reason to go along to the Fairtrade Fair is to join Fairtrade Hay in toasting Jo Eliot as she leaves for sunnier climes next year. She has been a driving force for the Hay Fairtrade group and we will miss her energy and enthusiasm. Thanks to Jo for all her hard work, and we wish her and Noel all the best for their future in Portugal. If you’d like to find out more about Fairtrade Hay then do come along to one of our informal meetings. Contact louise@eighteenrabbit.co.uk to find out about meetings in 2018. You can also visit our Facebook page @FairtradeHay for updates. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Hello from Glasbury Get-Together Club. events from past times of Hay-on-Wye. These brought much laughter and comment, identifying local people at events. All appreciated by an enthusiastic audience. A very enjoyable afternoon. Reminder: Our Christmas party lunch is at The Old Black Lion in Hay-on-Wye, on Wednesday 6th December, 12.30pm for 1pm. Members’ lunch will be subsidised by £3 and Christmas raffle prizes will be provided from club funds. Our hope is that Glasbury Get-Together Club will see new members joining us in the New Year, to meet new people, make friends and enjoy in the future our monthly club meetings, arranged trips out and theatre visits, etc. New members are very welcome.

Dessert was a choice of apple crumble and custard or ice cream and Eton mess, which is making all of those unable to attend very jealous right now. A walk around the grounds, henna tattoos and more football concluded the time here and before leaving people wrote messages on post-it notes for everyone to see what a good day it had been. HBTSR supporters are grateful to staff and pupils of the school for such a warm welcome, wonderful food and for giving up their Sunday to help with the day.
News from Gwernyfed Rugby Club Securing the Future of Gwernyfed RFC A very important day in the events calendar is happening at Gwernyfed RFC. After a year of fundraising events including Fun Days, North/South Bike Ride, Bingo, Cake Stalls, Panto, Quiz Evenings etc, we are proud to welcome everyone to the Club on Saturday 30th December for the Official Opening of the Brian Jones Memorial Field. The Club will be open from 12 noon and the Field will be officially opened at 2pm by Brian’s family.
The day and atmosphere at Gwernyfed could be summarised with this quote left by M from Syria: “My life has been very bad but today has been a high point. It will help me and my family cope with the bad times better” – well, M from Syria, we hope Gwernyfed has shown you our core belief of perseverance and you take this with you wherever you go.
