“Wye Local is a really affordable way for me to promote my small business to the local communities in our area. It regularly brings me new customers and enables me to access a wider audience with my products. I’ve also had the opportunity to be featured in the ‘Local Talent’ article. It’s always a good read too, with lots of interesting features, local news and events.” Emma Baker-Jones, ESB Leather

They include studio opening for hArt 2018, and book illustration, Through a door marked summer, by Benjamin James Huxley, to

be launched in the latter half of next year with national and local book launches. Artist statement: I am a selftaught artist born in Shropshire, and have lived and worked for over 35 years in the borderlands between Wales and England. I don’t remember a time when I have not been drawing – in fact, I can’t not paint or draw. It’s become part of my being, my expression of ideas and feelings. It’s my way of looking at the world and translating everything I see, feel, touch, and sense into a visual image that evokes an emotion in the viewer. My inspiration comes from spending hours amongst the hills and valleys close to home; collecting stones, shells, fossils, leaves, bits of old metal, twigs, berries and bones, and all things that glisten. I am moved by seasonal shifts, and sources of light, be it sunlight, moonshine, star glow or reflections. In some of my recent works I feel the need to evoke a sense of landscape of the mind and spirit; a sentient landscape which is not just a linear landscape but an attempt to capture a sense of awe. It’s where the ancient, the past, the present, and even the future are sensed within the now. Where time is mutable, and hopefully the onlooker becomes involved, and part of the telling of a story. I prefer to work with inks, adding many under and over layers of watercolours, creating a glow and a depth, to see beyond the paper.

BUSINESS PROFILE

CSM Plumbing and Building Services CSM Plumbing and Building Services was set up by Courtney Metcalfe in 2009. His aim was to provide a friendly and reliable service to the community. Not only do CSM provide plumbing and building work, they are also HETAS registered wood burner engineers. CSM have got a small workshop where they can make bespoke railings, gates and pretty much anything out of steel. When was the business started? 2009. What made you set up the business? When I qualified with an NVQ in plumbing in 1996, work was not great. I was offered two days a week by a local plumber so I went on to work alongside my father for a local steel fabrication business which had just started up. That’s where I stayed for 10+ years, becoming one of their top fabricators and their main site man. I was still doing a bit of plumbing for people in the evenings and on weekends, and when work started to pick up I decided to take the plunge and set up on my own and I have never looked back since. Where are you surrounding areas.

based?

Hay-on-Wye

and

Do you have any ambitions to move or grow bigger? I have recently taken on an experienced general builder with vast knowledge in the industry to work alongside me, which enables us to take on a larger variety of jobs together. In 2018 I am looking to improve my workshop to further the steel fabricating side of my business. How many staff do you employ? I currently employ two members of staff.

job. I get to meet some amazing people from day to day. Also my Dad, who has been there to guide me from the start of my working life. List five goals on your business to-do list: Ensure the customer is always happy with the work carried out by us. Expand and promote the steel fabricating/ erecting side of my business. I would like to get OFTEC registered in 2018 so we can keep up with the demands on servicing and installations of oil boilers. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? I class myself as a very practical guy and can turn my hand to pretty much anything. I am always learning something new about the building trade. I think that anyone’s talents are shown from the work that they carry out. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? Working on a building site can be pretty comical on a daily basis! Whilst working as an apprentice, I recall going to fix a dodgy valve – as soon as I put the spanner on it, it broke, creating a nice steady flow of boiling hot water through the airing cupboard, the ceiling and eventually coming to rest on the family’s Sunday Roast below.

Two lessons having your own business has taught you? Never cut corners – there’s no such thing as a cheap fix!

Sum your business up in five words: Friendly, Flexible, Professional, Competitive and Hard Working!

What has been the biggest help to building your business up? Without the locals, I wouldn’t have a

New in Town: Healthy Feet Clinic Name of the business? Healthy Feet Clinic. Where are you based or what is the area in which you work? Although we are primarily a mobile business, we now provide foot treatments at Hey Hair and Beauty in Castle Street, Hay-on-Wye. Why the Hay area? We have expanded our established business to include Hay-on-Wye as we have recognised that our service could be required in the area. Why did you decide to open this shop/business? We are very pleased to be working alongside the ladies at Hey Hair & Beauty – by providing a foot care service within the salon we are adding to the wide range of treatments available by Hey Hair & Beauty. What are some of challenges you’ve encountered? Being new to an area is sometimes challenging, however we hope that people will visit us at Hey Hair and Beauty for any foot treatments they may require. What do you wish you had known before you started? How much we enjoy our job! Is this the first business you have launched? No. How is this different than the others you have launched? We have launched a business and service which we truly enjoy providing: we feel this is the key to many happy years ahead. What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? Having previous business experience and a marketing background has enabled us to run a business which is a pleasure to manage. Describe a typical day in your business. A typical day includes meeting and treating clients, relieving them of any discomfort and watching them leave with a spring in their step! Any advice to new businesses in this area? 100th Anniversary of WWI As we all know 2018 is the 100th Anniversary of the ending of the Great War. Hay History Group are meeting on Friday 19th January, when Ann Reece from the Regimental Museum in Brecon will talk about the Welsh Heroes Project. Never Forget Your Welsh Heroes is the national archive that tells the story of the wars and conflicts of Welsh soldiers through the letters and diaries they wrote. In my book Hay at War I printed several such letters but there must be lot of letters and diaries still out there, hidden in family papers. We want to share them with the nation, and allow these soldiers to be recognised for their sacrifice. But that does not mean families letting go of their valuable personal histories. The archive uses copies of letters or diaries, or even videos of family members reading selected passages. Here (to the right) is one from Hay, written by a Hay doctor at the Front. Dr A.C. Hincks, son of Dr T. S.H. Hincks, of Church Street, Hay, and an old pupil of Christ College, Brecon, is doing strenuous work at the Front, and having some thrilling experiences, as these extracts from letters received from him show. He holds a Lieutenant’s commission and is serving with the 26th Field Ambulance, 8th Division, British Expeditionary Force. Hay History Group dates for next year’s meetings in Cusop Village Hall are all Fridays at 7.30pm: 23rd March, 18th May, 27th July, 28th September, 30th November. All meetings are free to attend. December 2nd. Yesterday was a great day here. We had a visit from King George. We had a long wait in the streets for him, and then there was a great procession of about ten cars. The first was driven by the Prince of Wales himself. In the second was the King and the French President then some Indian celebrities, General Joffre, and others. There were half a dozen aeroplanes hovering over them, and German bullets bursting within half a mile. I suppose it was a sight that will never be seen again. We should have liked to give the King a good old cheer, but had to stand still at attention. Our aeroplanes are very busy over the German position.... Christmas Day. The Germans in the trenches opposite us had their Christmas tree, and put rows of candles in front of the trenches: our men met them half way and exchanged cigarettes, chocolates, etc. We have had a quiet Christmas, with Christmas weather, a good old white frost. It is very cold for the men in the trenches. Their feet are already wet through, and now frost. I am afraid of the result. Boxing Day. We are now starting our concert for the patients and men. We have opened a dressing station right up at the firing line, and we take it in turns to go out there for 24 hours. It is quite safe, because we have built a dug-out where we can retire if the place is shelled. They generally shell the place for a few minutes every day just to keep us lively.

Llangoed Hall welcomes you Llangoed Hall is a beautiful 23-bedroom country house hotel, nestled into the Wye River Valley, that commands magnificent views of the Black Mountains and beyond. When you arrive there is no reception desk, just friendly and professional staff to look after you. The spacious reception rooms are full of antiques, complimented by a superb collection of original 18th and 19th Century paintings and drawings including works of art by Edwardian artists Walter Sickert, Augustus John and Rex Whistler. The hall was originally a Jacobean Mansion of 1632, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, redesigned Llangoed Hall in 1912. In the 1980s the hall was bought by Sir Bernard Ashley (husband of Laura Ashley) who rescued the property with the clear vision of

creating the ambiance of the Edwardian country house party. Largely as a result of Sir Bernard Ashley’s foresight, much of the house and gardens remain as they were then but complimented, today, with modern conveniences to provide an idyllic location for holidays, weddings, conferences, lunches, afternoon teas, special occasions and any other celebrations. Llangoed Hall’s head Chef Nick Brodie’s awardwinning cuisine has flair and imagination and only the finest local produce is used to create outstanding gourmet dishes. Nick has also recently appeared on BBC2’s the Great British Menu, so pop in to sample our outstanding lunch, dinner and afternoon tea menu, making it the perfect setting to relax, unwind and enjoy mouth-watering food. Wild in January

“Candelmas Bells”, “Drooping Bells”, “Eve’s Tears” or even “Bulbous Violets” were names used for them in the past. Once again, the Botany group will be participating in the nationwide BSBI New Year Plant Hunts. These are open to all. All you have to do is spot a wild plant in flower and we will name it and record it. Last year 23 species were found at Ystradgynlais and there will be a repeat event at this venue on Tuesday, 2nd. Then we will see what we can find at Crickhowell on Thursday, 4th.

Galanthus Nivalis Snowdrops will be flowering soon on our roadsides and woodland margins. There is a small enclosed area near Llangorse where paths meet just west of the lake with a good display which suggests some habitation there in the past. The species may be native, but it is certain that most of those we see are escapes from or a relic of gardening.

On Saturday 13th the Annual Winter Bird Walk will be held at Llangorse Lake.

“Snowdrop” is a relatively recent name and

There will be Nature Reserve Volunteer Work Parties; on Tuesday, 16th at Pwll-y-Wrach for site management and Tuesday, 30th (TBC). Check full details at: bit.ly/BWTdiary

Get to really know... Jo Lord Jo Lord came to Hay 28 years ago as a potter but has always had a love of the outdoors and she says she’s lucky that her hobby has now become her profession. The Hay Runner is a passion, and sharing her love of running in particular has introduced her to an amazing group of people. She has now turned a full circle and is able to make a few pots again, alongside her Running and Personal Training. A perfect balance. Place of birth? Derby. Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? Ever hopeful! Occupation? Personal Trainer, Spinning Instructor, UK Athletics, Leader in running fitness. Part time potter. Children? Nooooo. Pets? Two Collies, Tarn and Reg. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Children of the stones Are you a collector of anything? Robots and clutter. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? Cheetah, because I could run fast. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To stop people hurting each other. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Coffee. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I try not to think of work but usually do. I keep a notepad now and write down my presleep thoughts. Do you believe in ghosts? Yes but it’s a bit more complicated than a straight yes or no. Can only go by experience. Most exciting thing you’ve won? 2nd prize egg & spoon race at 6 years old. Two lessons life has taught you? Don’t worry about the minutiae. Be as good as you can. What makes you grumpy? People being late. My own clutter. Teenage crush? David Essex.

You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? A house and my parents. Have any bad habits? Loads. Too many to write about. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Noisy eaters. Do you believe in the afterlife? I don’t know. I have a very open mind. What book would you recommend to others? Saturday. Best present ever received? A wooden sledge when I was 8. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: My untidyness. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? The salt plains in Chile’s Attacama desert. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Grand to Grand Ultra in USA. Attacama Desert Ultra. An iron man triathlon.Visit family in Canada with my brother. Walk the Offa’s Dyke path end to end. Leaving one open as I’m sure there are more to come! Name one regret you have: Not having got to know my Grandma better. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Climbing trees without fear. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Climbing trees with fear. And knowing that many of the things you used to worry about really don’t matter. The most important thing is being kind to each other.

Men – Lose weight and never be hungry! Research by Slimming World suggests that many men don’t like to ask for help to manage their weight as they worry it looks weak – yet these local men who have had the strength to look past that have gone on to do very well. For example, Brian lost over 3 stone and is maintaining it beautifully; Brychan lost 4 stone and has kept it off for nearly a year, Richard P wanted to lose 1½ stone, a conservative target because he wasn’t sure he’d be able to do it. His total loss was 2½ stone since joining in the summer and he is loving his healthy, more active lifestyle. And just to prove it’s not a fluke, Richard C lost 5 stone in 2017, and walked down the aisle with his bride, feeling on top of the world. Rob has also lost 2½ stone since October and is very close to achieving his target. Like many men, they thought that slimming clubs were aimed

at women and assumed the focus would be on ‘diet’ food and talking about people’s emotions. Did they worry about walking through the door the first time, about the prospect of being the only man in a room full of women? Yes, but they did it anyway and then discovered that not only were they not the only man, but they loved the group experience too. So, if losing some weight and improving your health is a New Year resolution for you, and you want to carry on enjoying your favourite meals, why not try Slimming World?

A new energy approach for the new year

As we move into January there will be many people who are planning changes to their living arrangements and extending, modifying or even building their homes. When you buy new heating equipment, it is a decision that will stay with you for 15+ years. Locking yourself into a poor design or specification for that period would be a bad move, and also an expensive one. Historically the prices of all heating fuels have risen at similar rates – but they have also risen at rates higher than regular inflation: heating your home is costing you more of your income than ever before. Of all the fuels, electricity stands some chance of being a little more stable in the long term. In the next 5 to 10 years you can still expect incentive schemes encouraging people to buy into sustainable technologies, but also a move to penalise bad choices – probably through taxation. The cleanest methods will be the least affected – Natural gas, LPG and heat pumps. On the naughty list will be storage heaters and oil boilers. Wood burning stoves may also fare badly due to the problems they cause with sooty pollution – a staggering 240% more than from ALL traffic in the UK.

Tired of your style?! ...you need to call:

Obviously the smart move is to install high efficiency, low temperature systems and insulate all new buildings and extensions to very high standards – whilst it costs a little more initially the savings will be significant over the decades… so be smart and spend a little now to save a lot in the future. Baby steps for a Happy New Year! As I write this for January, we’re shin deep in snow! It’s Sunday and I’m guessing the club won’t be busy tomorrow as there’s barely a car out. It’s stunningly beautiful, and as I walked my dogs out earlier it occurred to me I felt EXHILARATED and really happy! We lost our Big Schnauzer Mac recently and 3 weeks ago took on a rescue dog to keep our other gorgeous mutt company and he’s just PERFECT! Everything is slotting into place. It’s so important sometimes, just to ‘let go’, enjoy life, relax and have fun! And yesterday under the organisational skills of Kelvin Jenkins, we had a WW1 themed carol service up at Cusop Church – so moving and a stark reminder to appreciate our hard-fought liberty. We have a LOT to be grateful for. I cannot pretend to have all the answers and I won’t always have brilliant days, but I had to stop and analyse why I felt so good! Lately I’ve been pretty chilled about what I eat and the volume of exercise I do (nothing new!). I’ve had LOADS of time walking outside (I needed to slowly build Alfie up as he’d been starved and not exercised). I also had to let work take

more of a back seat as I focused on my family (my beautiful daughter had an operation). Now a holiday looms, and just the thought of the break is revitalising me! And it’s funny but have you noticed when you back off and stop trying so hard – somehow life still delivers: the Club’s still vibrant, new members still coming in, the world still rotates! Anyway back to now – we’ll have just come through Christmas and who knows what resolutions you might have made? Generally I think they’re a bad idea because we tend to let go a bit too much over Xmas and then repent! We load ourselves with too many pledges to try and redress the balance. We all have the power to be happy – identify what it is you WANT.The thought of the changes needed to get there can be paralysing yet the reality is often FAR easier than our imaginations imply. Start with one small habit change and allow this to lead you to more. ‘The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step’ – Lao Tzu. News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I write, we are well into the season of Advent and many community gatherings for people of all ages have already taken place. The heavy snowfall of this past weekend has put paid to others with the treacherous conditions making it necessary to cancel or postpone events. When this edition of Wye Local hits the door mat, it will be time to reflect upon the old year and look ahead to the new, with everyone wondering what 2018 will mean for us, our families and community and those we hold dear. It is inevitably also a time when we think of those who are no longer with us – and recall their part in our lives. 2017 has certainly brought its share of difficulties, challenges and unpredictable events. Our world feels like a more unstable place due to terror attacks at home and abroad and with the occupants of both the White House and the Kremlin pursuing nationalist agendas, showing scant regard for wider world opinion. In this context, the greater stability we can retain in our relations with European friends and neighbours and the lower the hurdles erected in trade and labour flows will surely be in our shared interest, as our governments strive to navigate the choppy waters of Brexit. Our own local community has had many reasons to count its blessings again during the past year. The sterling fundraising efforts by so many at Gwernyfed RFC have enabled the Club to purchase the pitches at Trefecca Road, which is testimony to the dedication of all involved. It is entirely fitting that the year should end with the official opening of the Brian Jones Memorial Field on 30th December.Titch was a stalwart of the Club and no greater tribute could be paid to him than by naming the field in his honour.

These achievements and so many others in the cultural, social and sporting life of our town and its Black Mountain hinterland are based on selfless volunteering and acts of kindness by many in our community. It would be a really positive New Year’s resolution, if we were to commit ourselves afresh to recognising this and to saying thank you to those who do so much to enrich our common life. Maybe some of us could also lend a hand, if we have the capacity to do so. There IS such a thing as society. At the same time, the construction of the new home of Ysgol y Mynydd Du at Hay Road, Talgarth to replace the existing sites at Bronllys and Talgarth is proceeding apace. Plans for the relocation of the entire school and of course our community library are taking shape for late February, with an official opening event under discussion for April. This level of capital investment in our area by Powys County Council and Welsh Government is unprecedented, especially when the pressure on public finances is so intense. It is only right to recognise that fact. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk,

on

Facebook

or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 5th January from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. No appointment is necessary, but advance notice is sometimes helpful, if the issues you wish to raise are complex. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue, which may be troubling you. Happy New Year William

Newss from

Kirsty Williams

There is a saying, “may you live in interesting times”. Welsh, British and international politics is certainly interesting at the moment. With issues like Brexit, Donald Trump, and North Korea; 2018 is looking very uncertain. What is certain is that nothing can be taken for granted and we must all stand up and fight for what we believe in. Representing Brecon and Radnorshire in the National Assembly is an enormous privilege and one I have certainly never taken for granted. I love this constituency dearly and will continue to do all I can to protect and improve its schools, economy, and vital public services. Brexit has dominated the news and political agenda for the past 18 months. That looks set to continue into 2018 and beyond, with big question marks still remaining over our future relationship with the world’s largest trading block. I hope we will get some certainty in the New Year. The Welsh Liberal Democrat group on Powys County Council are doing a good job, holding Powys’ feet to the fire over the decisions they are making. For example, the Conservative/Independent council are currently facing tough questions over their delivery of adult and children’s social services and it is vital there is improvement in this next year. I hope you and your families have a very merry Christmas and I would like to wish you all the very best for 2018. As ever, if there is anything I can do to help you, please call my office on 01874 625 739 or email me at Kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

We in Brecon and Radnorshire have had lots of good news to celebrate in recent months. I recently visited Franksbridge Primary School to congratulate them on their outstanding Estyn report. Brecon High School has been given the go ahead for a ÂŁ22 million pound state of the art new school. We have celebrated the renovation of the Strand Hall in Builth, 120 years of the same family running the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod and the new Archbishop of Wales being enthroned at Brecon Cathedral. Brecon and Radnorshire is on the move, and I want this success and investment to continue. Since 2015, I and Conservative colleagues in both Westminster and Cardiff Bay have worked relentlessly to push for a Mid Wales Growth Deal. In the Chancellors budget a few weeks ago he confirmed that this deal is being discussed and put together. As soon as this announcement was made public I organised a meeting between UK Government Minister for Wales Guto Bebb and leading figures at Powys County Council, to discuss the next steps in putting together a comprehensive plan for an effective and radical Mid Wales Growth Deal. Thus far, most Growth Deals have been based in metropolitan cities and large towns, not rural areas like Mid Wales. They have far different issues to address than places such as Powys. For example, unlike many cities, Powys has extremely low unemployment levels, due to our passionate workforce and brilliant local employers. But we struggle when it comes to productivity and many are battling with low pay. Some of the aims of this Growth Deal should be to tackle low pay and up skill our local workforce, thus increasing wages and living standards in the process. The team behind the deal should push for increases in investment to areas such as our industrial and business parks, which lie on the outskirts of our market towns across Mid Wales. These parks employ vast numbers of people and attracting new businesses to these areas must be at the heart of the Growth Deal. Building a more sustainable and self-reliable region is something this Growth Deal must aim for. Along with improving our growing tourism industry and tackling the issue of our ageing population by attracting young professionals to move to our beautiful constituency. Mid Wales is moving forward and I will continue to do my upmost to make the Growth Deal a major success.

News from... News from Bryngwyn RDA A very happy and peaceful new year to everyone! We have been taking our winter break to give our ponies a well-earned rest, but we look forward to seeing all our riders very soon. Please see our web page on the Bryngwyn Riding Centre website for start dates. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who has given both time and money in the past year, helping us to provide the riding opportunities that our riders both enjoy and benefit from so much. Our marvellous volunteers have also been taking a welldeserved break. However, some just can’t keep away, and have been coming to Bryngwyn to ride themselves. Becky and the team would be very pleased to book a hack or lesson for anyone wishing to start the new year by trying something different, or honing their existing skills. You may want to chat about volunteering with RDA, or simply enjoy the wonderful winter landscape. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Fifteen members and guests ‘Got-Together’ for our annual Christmas lunch, this year held at The Old Black

Lion in Hay. Lots of chat and a very good lunch enjoyed by us all, and the venue was fabulous. John and Gloria took a few photos, which no doubt you will all be able to see sometime in our club album. The Christmas raffle was drawn later. We all departed feeling very full. Our next club meeting will be our AGM on Wednesday 24th January 2018 in Glasbury Village Hall, 2.30–4.30pm. Hope you will all be able to join us, and as always at this time of year, renewal of membership is due which is £8 annually. We would like to invite new members to enrol in January and enjoy company, entertainment, trips to gardens and other interesting places and the theatre. Tea & biscuits and raffle always at our club meetings. It is appreciated if small items for raffle prizes could be donated. Look forward to seeing you all in the New Year – with best wishes to everyone for a happy and healthy one ahead. More details on our January posters, or phone: Gloria on 01497 847726 or Judith on 01497 847274.

News from Gwernyfed High School Our drama studio has recently been converted into a dance studio, with Street Dance Club taking place every Tuesday for pupils. Street Dance are not only a regular part of dance activities and events in and around Powys but are for pupils who have never danced before. Tasked to try and encourage the lovely readers of the Wye Local to try something new, GHS hopes to encourage you to try dancing in any form. Whether it be street dance as mentioned above, ballet (with external classes happening all through the surrounding area) or maybe even something wild and energetic like Zumba, we hope that you can make your way to the dance floor this year.

In order to stay at the heart of the community and remain a hub of activities for the surrounding towns and villages, Gwernyfed High School has many different facilities which can be booked out should you need them (the drama/dance studio being one of them). So you have no excuse if you can’t find the perfect space to practice your robot. Just get in touch with the high school if it’s something you are interested in. We hope that 2018 brings a lot of new and exciting opportunities for everyone and we wish you the very best of new years. News from Hay Chamber of Commerce Happy 2018 and welcome back to our bi-monthly slot in WL. We’re your Chamber of Commerce and, as you’ll see, we are for life and not just for Christmas (lights)… That said, we do hope you enjoyed the festive decorations and Big Switch-on Event! Massive thanks go out to Hay School, Hay Markets, the Food Festival, Hay Does Vintage and Hay Festival plus all the businesses and individuals who kindly donated and/or fundraised, making the town’s 2017 Christmas efforts just magical. News from Hay & District Dial-a-Ride A worthwhile new year’s resolution – try something new! I first became aware of Dial-a-Ride when my mother’s health deteriorated. I was still working and was not always able to get her to doctor or hospital appointments. I contacted Hay Dial-a-Ride who stood in for me when necessary. I was both relieved and grateful that such a service was available and made a promise that I would volunteer my services to Dial-aRide when I retired. I have been driving for them for 12 years now and some time in December I did my 300th trip. These have included journeys to Abergavenny, Brecon, Hereford, Bronllys, Builth Wells, Ross-on-Wye hospitals, and to Hay, Talgarth, Staunton, Kington and Ewyas Harold surgeries. I have collected people from Hay, Clyro, Rhosgoch, Painscastle, Dorstone, Vowchurch, Glasbury, Llanigon, Felindre, Brilley, Llowes and Llyswen, from isolated farms and houses in the hills. Hay Dial-a-Ride needs drivers for hospital/surgery journeys as mentioned above. It has lost several recently due to age, moving, etc. I have been told so

many times: “What would I do without Dial-a-Ride?” You also hear some good gossip! Any expenses you incur are reimbursed. The time you give is voluntary; my 300 journeys over 12 years work out at only 2 a month. The next time you sit at home moaning about daytime TV or with time on your hands, you could be assisting someone who needs your help. You are also accruing points for that big Dial-a-Ride in the sky! Tom Hatherill, Volunteer Driver If the above has interested you, arrange to spend some time with us to see how you can help. Call us on 01497 821616 or find us on Facebook. News from Hay Markets Christmas is over: it’s time to look towards a new year. Whether seeking post-Christmas bargains, something new or winter warmth then the market has much to offer. Start your day in your vintage knit making hot buttered toast from freshly baked bread, spread with homemade jam, supping a cup of locally roasted coffee or fruity tea. Follow with warm bara brith and croissants. Lunch on indulgent cheese toasties and seasonal broths and for stress-free suppers try homemade pies or savoury pastries, or cook up a hearty hogget stew,

or fish pie, accompanied with lashings of local veg. Postdinner curl up by the fire in a vintage armchair on a new Moroccan rug, knitting an alpaca scarf or reading a weighty (perhaps lightweighty) tome, with man’s best friend, sleepy on homemade dog treats, curled around your wool-socked ankles. If you prefer warming the heart give the gift of a quirky knick-knack, handmade card, goldsmithed locket, relaxing bath soak or flowers and planter. Basically, Hay Market has it pretty much covered! News from Haygarth Medical Centre Would you like to try something new in 2018? Well why not take a look at our Invest in Your Health – Health and Wellbeing Course? The Doctors at Haygarth Surgery are working in partnership with Powys Teaching Health Board to bring a new health and wellbeing course to our patients. Invest in Yourself is a course designed for people who live with a health condition or live with someone who has a health condition. The courses are held in both Hay andTalgarth Surgeries. You will be invited to attend a 2½ hour session once a week over a 6 week period. Each week we will look at

The course is run by our trained Healthcare Technician along with a volunteer who has experience of living with a long term health condition. Over the course of the programme we will discuss different information, including the following: • Introduction to self-management • Drinking and eating healthily • Movement and activity • Managing mood • Communicating effectively • Relapse prevention. Every week there will also be time spent activity planning and learning relaxation techniques. If you think that this course may be able to help you, please contact your surgery for further information. News from Hay Town Council We are very pleased to announce the introduction of the Hay-on-Wye Citizen of the Year award. The award will be given to any person or group in the community in recognition of their services to the

town of Hay and its people. Possible candidates will be nominated by anyone: towns people, councillors and local organisations and clubs. You must be a resident in the Hay council area to nominate someone for the award. If you are over 18 years old you will have to be on the electoral roll. People who are eligible for consideration for the award must live in the Hay Town Council area and must have completed their good works within the town. The awards will be made annually, and the winning person will receive a certificate and £100 for their chosen local charity. The nomination process will start in January 2018 and you will be able to make a nomination by filling in a form that will be available at the Town Council offices. The award will be made at a public ceremony as part of the Hay Town Independence Day celebrations in April 2018. If you know someone, or a group, that you think has made a positive impact on our town then please nominate them. Pop along to the council offices in January and pick up a form. who have made our lives better: let’s make a day of recognition for them – it’s up to you. News from U3A Hay As these words are being written, Hay and the surrounding areas are currently freezing under a thick blanket of snow and ice. Is this extreme weather normal or is it a sign of global warming and subsequent climate change? This is a major phenomenon that affects us all, and Mike Thompson will give an illustrated talk on ‘Climate Resilience’ and whether the world is prepared to change its ways, at the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 16th January 2018 at 10.30am. New year, new time! After lunch, our afternoon session will begin earlier than usual at 1.15pm with Al Gore’s acclaimed 2006 film An Inconvenient Truth, which will continue the day’s theme. This promises to be an informative and thoughtprovoking day and is open to everyone! Please do come and join us at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. For further information, phone 01497 821595.

Bread By a visitor to the HayDay Café Tell me about the grain. It’s grown just down the road here. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen a wheat grain. Notice the smell of the wheat – the barn and straw. At some point we need to get our hands in there. I made bread many, many years ago. Much easier with a machine takes about four minutes. I’m a slave to idleness, my family sport is sloth.

Wye Local would like to thank the volunteers at The HayDay Café for everything they do to help people living with dementia throughout the year.
