BUSINESS PROFILE

Lucy’s Hair & Beauty Lucy Bufton set up Lucy’s Hair & Beauty in 2004. The business now employs three people, with a further four self-employed. Catering for everyone from babies of three months to older clients up to 100 years old, Lucy has customers travelling from as far as 30 miles away to enjoy treatments. Where are you based? Peterchurch. What made you set up the business? The previous owner was moving to Spain and she approached me about coming to run the salon. At the time I was happily working full time in a salon in Hereford and I really wasn’t sure it was a move I wanted to make! Thankfully I did, as after working in the salon for less than 6 months it came up for sale and I was able to take it over as my own salon. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? It would be lovely if one day we could extend the salon: there are other services we could offer, if we had more space. But no, we won’t move from Peterchurch. Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualification up to date? We do go on training courses and have three weekly visits from lots of hair and beauty reps. The hair and beauty industries are continually launching new products and we need to keep up to date. Every day as a hairdresser you are learning. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? Work hard, and appreciate everyone who supports you! The paperwork which goes with owning your own business is massive, especially when you employ staff. I don’t think that people often appreciate the hours that need spending keeping things organised – I certainly didn’t! What is your ideal job/client? I love all aspects of my job and every client is different. If I had to choose a favourite it would be a complete colour change and restyle cut. What is your greatest achievement in your business? I studied my NVQ 1, 2 and 3 in Hairdressing 20 years ago. After doing just hairdressing for 18 years, two years ago I started doing some beauty courses and now I am also qualified in four different areas of beauty. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? My staff. I have three hairdressing staff who work with me, two of whom have been with me from the beginning (14 years) and one who has been

with me for 11 years. Having such great staff has enabled me to have a good work/ home balance. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: A bigger salon would be nice one day. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? I’m not sure if it’s a talent or not but working to an appointment system makes you very organised in all aspects of your life. I am never late and I’m currently trying to pass on my good time-keeping to my husband and children! What would be your dream assignment? To sort out Mr Trump’s hair...! What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? One that sticks in my mind is having to drive a client’s mobility scooter home in a thunderstorm while she had a lift home in a car, as she didn’t want her new hair getting wet! I rode it up the main road whilst holding up an umbrella. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? During my 14 years as a salon owner I have got married, moved house twice and had two children. I have had great support from my staff and family, which has allowed me some time off when my children were small. My children are now 11 and 9 and are becoming a bit more independent, and it allows me to now be back in the salon more, although like me my son has a massive passion for football, which involves lots of taxi work! Being a hairdresser is a very rewarding job. I have many clients who are now close friends, every day is different, and I really couldn’t imagine doing anything else! What have you done today to make you feel proud? I did a lovely full head of foils and cut and blow-dry today – seeing a lovely fresh colour and having a happy client makes me proud of my work! And my children make me proud every day. What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? You get out what you put in – to make a successful business you must put in lots of time and effort.

Local Talent: Sophia Roberts

Type of artist: Ceramicist. Range of products: Tableware, sculptural pieces. Where did you train or gain experience? BA (Hons) Decorative Arts, Nottingham Trent University. Artist statement: Clay is a wonderful material. It bridges the gap between science and magic! Magic is the unexplainable, the unbelievable and the unplanned, it is chance – it doesn’t matter how much I plan, I can never be completely sure of what will come out of the kiln and it will always be different. Chemistry also plays a key role in making ceramics. Chemical changes are happening throughout the making process. As a ceramicist I need to understand the structure of different compounds and how they react in order to have some control over the final outcome. One of the things I love about being a ceramic artist is that I can use clay to create both functional

and sculptural pieces. Over time we develop an intimate relationship with the objects we use every day – for this reason the functional pieces I create are uncomplicated in form and speak primarily about the material. My sculptural work is driven by my love of nature and its forever-changing unpredictability. I have explored this by pit firing. Pieces are nestled in the ground amongst natural foraged materials such as leaves, seaweed and grass; a large fire is built on top of the pieces. There is magic and mystery at this point, as it’s unknown whether the pieces will survive. The fire burns down overnight and once cooled beneath the ash, a unique fusion of colour and smoke created by the foraged materials has decorated the surface. Each piece is unique and irreplicable, with no other function than to be looked at and considered. Clay is tactile, squishy, and pliable and with the addition of heat transformed. The possibilities are endless!

Get to really know... Trish Barrell Trish came to Hay on holiday when she was 13, while fishing down the river. The best catch of the day was meeting her husband, Badger. Trish loved Hay so much that she persuaded her mother to move here. So they left their Birmingham home for Hay-on-Wye when she was 14. Her first job was as a shop assistant in FW Golesworthy’s, which she eventually left to have a family. Trish spent a lot of her working life childminding and working in primary schools, but decided to have a change in career when her best friend tipped her off to an opportunity as a receptionist at the Swan Hotel. She started there in January 2017 and has never looked back – she’s been too busy! Her attitude is: ‘always learning, and looking forward to the future’. Name: Trish Barrell (Patricia was only used by my mother when I was in trouble). Place of birth? Birmingham. Where do you live now? Lovely Clyro. Marital status? Married to my soulmate. Occupation? Newly promoted Operations Manager at the Swan Hotel. Children? Three gorgeous children, one amazing grandson and another grandchild due in March. So excited! Pets? Emile our Siberian husky and Mr Dangles our cat. Are you a collector of anything? Badger said shoes... If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I wouldn’t do any of them justice. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To travel back in time. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? I wonder what today will bring? What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? Unfortunately that is an issue, as I think or worry too much, then I can’t settle. Do you believe in ghosts? Yes, but it’s not the dead I’m afraid of, it’s the living! Most exciting thing you’ve won? Any win is exciting but Powys Disco Dancing Champion was amazing back in the late ’80s. Two lessons life has taught you? As you get older you don’t need to have lots of friends, just good friends. What will be will be: you can’t control everything.

What makes you grumpy? The weighing scales. Teenage crush? My gorgeous husband, Badger. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? More shoes and a family trip to Florida. Have any bad habits? Yes. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Lateness. What book would you recommend to others? A diary. Best present ever received? The gift of love. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Memory. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? I love to travel so I’m happy to go anywhere. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: That my friends and family always know I’m here for them; to give everything my all; to appreciate what people do for me; to try to work hard and never let people down; and to be grateful for the opportunity to grow old – others haven’t had that pleasure. Name one regret you have: Not thanking my mother for all she did for me. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: The energy. Name one thing you love about being an adult: I can eat pudding before my main! What’s your favourite song of the moment? ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ from Trolls Movie as my grandson sang it to me on the way to the pantomime. What’s your favourite song of all time? Anything I can dance to but one that always takes me to a time when I was younger is Salt & Pepper, ‘Push It’. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Dancing! But it doesn’t happen very often. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Spending it with friends and family. Have any hidden talents? I can order loads online without my husband knowing. What would be your dream job? Santa’s Elf. What have you done today to make you feel proud? An honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. Sum yourself up in five words: Forgetful, passionate, grateful, caring and forgetful.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Heart of Oak Oliver Price has enjoyed carpentry from a young age – he has always been passionate about working with wood. Before becoming self-employed, he worked for a local company and worked on projects at Llowes Court, Berrington Hall, Hereford Cathedral and Aberglasney Gardens. This experience played an important role for him in making the decision to become self-employed and run his own carpentry and joinery business. He set up Heart of Oak in 2002, and covers an area of around 30 miles from Hay. His primary customers are people who want quality timber frames and joinery services at an affordable price.

I have also had the great privilege of working for some amazing, inspirational people from writers to BBC producers.

Where are you based? Llanigon and surrounding area.

List one thing you wish you could change about your business: To have someone to undertake all the paperwork and scale drawings!.

Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Yes, I would like to expand the business and take on skilled joiners, to enable me to take on bigger, more challenging projects in the future. How many staff do you employ? Currently just myself. Have you won any awards in your business? I worked on a property which featured in the 2011 Best Holiday Cottage in Wales book. I designed and built the oak roof, with a cranked collar, arch braced truss. Do you need to do any annual training to keep up your qualification up to date? No, not generally – I learn new skills with every different job I undertake! Two lessons having your own business has taught you? You are never too old to learn new skills. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Every new project brings a new achievement and another accomplishment to the business. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? My father, who is a local plumber and has always highly recommended me to customers, continuously providing me with new and interesting jobs on top of my current workload.

Name one regret you have about your business: No regrets as of yet! Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Aside from the carpentry and joinery I have become a dab hand at tiling and bathroom fitting. What would be your dream assignment? To undertake works and repairs on Hay Castle, especially the Castle gates which are a fantastic example of skilled carpentry and joinery. I would also in the future like to build my own eco house, incorporating oak and glass. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? I also make joinery products, bespoke furniture (bookcases, tables, mirrors and more), and specialise in bespoke kitchens and bathroom fitting, to include tiling and plumbing. Sum your business up in five words: Passionate, dedicated, professional, reliable and, of course, hard-working.

New in Town: Emma’s Zoo Professional Pet & House Sitter Where are you based? Based in Clyro but have customers all over Powys, Herefordshire, and even as far as Shopshire! Why the Hay area? I’ve lived here for the past 8 years, and found a need for a reliable pet-sitting service locally.

home for our dinner and then chill with the dogs before a last minute walk at about 11pm. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Keep advertising and getting the word about. Listen to your customers’ needs and research hard, and know your business inside out.

Why did you decide to set up this business? I love animals and wanted to provide a service for people with pets. What are some of challenges you encountered? The weather! It’s a non-stop process of cleaning when it’s wet and you have lots of excitable, wet and muddy dogs bounding about! What do you wish you had known before you started? How much fun we have! I would have started sooner! Is this the first business you have launched? Yes. What type of education or experience helped you to open and run this business? I have always worked with animals and I grew up around horses, sheep, cows, dog and cats. I have a certificate in Animal First Aid and Dog Care that I achieved in 2017. My next challenge is a course in Dog Psychology and Equine Psychology. Describe a typical day in your business. First job of the day is to put the kettle on and check the diary for any collections/drop offs, meetings and farm visits. We then feed everyone who’s staying with us and take them out for a walk. Next we go on our rounds to any pop-ins we may have. I own 3 horses so we go and feed, muck out and turn out the horses. Around lunchtime we pop the dogs out again. A few hours in the afternoon is taken up by admin work...unless we’ve been sat on by our furry visitors. Around 4–5pm we do everything in reverse. We also have a herd of sheep and some cows so we go up and see to everyone. Then back

Vintage Society helps Mountain Rescue Teams Three Cocks Vintage Society recently celebrated their 40th birthday at the Harp Inn at Glasburyon-Wye. During the evening money raised at their Steam & Vintage Rally was presented to various charities. Mr Neil Hughes received a cheque on behalf of the Longtown Mountain Rescue Team for £500 from the society secretary Mrs Margaret James. A similar amount was given to Mr Kevin Harding of the Brecon Team by Mr Gwilym Lewis. Both teams expressed their gratitude for the donations. Mrs Sue Farmer received a cheque for Wales Air Ambulance of £1,000 from Mr Gerald Morgan and another £1,000 was designated for the Midland Air Ambulance whose representative was unable to attend. Mrs Margaret James was given a bouquet of flowers and a set of crystal wine glasses for her outstanding service as secretary to the Society for the past 40 years by Mr Tom Henderson – another longstanding member. Mrs James announced her intention of

standing down at the AGM in January and thanked the members for their support over the years. The members enjoyed a buffet supper, anticipating another successful Rally on Sunday 12th August 2018. The Public Houses of Talgarth What we now call public houses once played fundamental roles in the social life of most communities, not least those in rural locales, and Talgarth is no exception; except, where have they gone? A walk around a town or village will often offer clues as to the past use of a building as a public house, but not always. Here are a few insights into the not-so-obvious once public houses of Talgarth. As one walks past the Town Hall in Talgarth town square and up towards St Gwendoline’s Church you will pass a large, now private, residence on your right. It has a sign on the perimeter wall announcing the property as ‘The Old Upper Lion’. The sign, the setting of the house and its appearance suggest that it was a public house of fine proportions, but where is or was ‘The Lower Lion’ public house? It was in fact situated where now (and for some time) is located Brian George’s butcher’s shop. A little way along High Street from the butcher’s shop is the home of another once-public house. The property is on the intersection of High Street and Heol Las and is now named ‘Broken House’, but once it was ‘The Horse and Jockey’ pub, although it is not obvious now. Indeed High Street was well served with public houses, because a little further along High Street is the property ‘The Radnor Arms’. A 13th-century former Squire’s house, the Radnor Arms served as a public house of that name until the second half of the last century. At one time Talgarth had over 50 public and cider houses. These places of social intercourse and exchange played a fundamental role in the lives of communities. Article supplied by Alan Lovell, Talgarth & District Historical Society

Wild in February

Protecting wildlife for the future

is a parasite on tree roots, often Hazel, and can be seen in shady lanes such as that by the Login Brook up to Hay Common. We saw some emerging shoots in Priory Groves at Brecon during the January tree identification walk. As a parasite it does not manufacture food at all and has no green chlorophyll. The only purpose of the waxy and rather unearthly or ghostly looking flower stems is to reproduce. It is the seed capsules that most resemble teeth, but it seems the plant, although a “wort”, was never much used as a herbal medicine. It can also grow on Poplar, Willow, Alder or Elm roots. Apparently in Yorkshire it was once known as “Corpse-flower”.

Lathraea Squamaria Toothwort Shoots of this not that common plant may be seen in February and it is often in full flower by March. It

Earthy, herby, leafy and green

Spring is a wonderful time to plant mint, buy as young plants, put in a large pot filled with multi-purpose compost and place near to the back door for easy picking. You can harvest your crop until October. Fresh leaves make a wonderful tea, or chopped into salads & I love it on falafel with pitta bread or in lamb kofte. When it is young and healthy pick the leaves and dry them so you have a good stock to last you over the winter. Dried mint is also a great tea, lovely in the morning and can clear the head and aid digestion. Mint has a wonderful fresh, clean scent, herby & natural. Its name derived from ‘mente’ a Latin word meaning ‘thought’. As you know I believe natural is best and I have developed this moisturising handwash which is free from synthetic foaming agents, surfactants and other irritants; which means it hydrates, softens and protects the skin – you don’t need to moisturise afterwards. Organic olive oil, pure essential oils and of course palm free. Article by Jacqueline Kennett. Source: RHS. org.uk.

Energy usage: Does what I do matter? In the last month you may have heard several stories in the press about how we have broken renewable energy records in the UK during 2017. There have indeed been many notable events: • In April, there was no electricity production from coal on one day, for the first time ever. • There was a day when there was more energy from solar, wind and nuclear than gas and coal. • More than half the energy in summer came from ‘low carbon’ sources. • The National Grid produced less carbon than ever before. This could lead you to believe that the UK is somehow pulling its weight when it comes to renewables – but unfortunately that is not true. Across the 28 European countries, the UK has had the weakest ambition, and a failure to achieve its targets, placing us at 24th in the performance tables. In 2014, Sweden achieved 52% of energy from renewables whilst the UK managed 6%. So whilst we should celebrate these landmarks, there is much to do. And it all starts at home, as our houses use twice as much energy as our entire industrial base, and our transport even more than that. So please – help drag us up those tables, and consider sustainable options whenever the chance arises. Practically, this means: switching energy supplier, replacing normal cars with electric/hybrid options, replacing inefficient heating systems and insulating your property to a high standard – if everyone were to make an effort on this we could be rising up those tables.

Sprouts with clout Recently I was wondering if it could be coincidence that as I’ve been sorting out my own gut health (and imploring clients to do the same) lots of other positives came into play. I now rarely focus on ‘weightloss,’ or even ‘girth’ so far as exercise and nutrition is concerned, even though I know it’s what many want advice on. When there is so much more at stake with regards to our health – seeking out the solutions for all the other issues should take priority, and then the fat will melt off ANYWAY! If you’re suffering from the effects of too much sugar, carbs or lack of decent fluids, and this manifests in (say) yeast infections, IBS, dry skin or a total lack of energy – any steps you take to address these concerns (taking out sugar, yeast, adding in water, making sure you have lots of veggies, etc) WILL lose you weight AND often clear these problems from what you eat ALONE! Look at the headlines recently about diabetes and how your diet can control it! But even I was surprised when in an effort to really nail my gut/respiratory issues (another day!), many of my menopausal symptoms disappeared.

As they were never too bad anyway (and also – as any woman of a certain age will verify – it’s very much like a flickering bulb on its way out – unpredictable and you’re never quite sure if it’s finally burnt out) – I didn’t immediately make a connection. But I now know it’s strongly so! Gut microbiomes MAKE our main sex hormones. In an evolutionary context – we literally have receptors in our cells begging for the hormones found in the plants we eat. It’s our duty not to leave them wanting! So ladies – your (possible) hot flushes, headaches, brittle bones and hairy chins (!), can all be helped by (drum roll) SPROUTED FOODS. Now I KNOW I have a reputation for being all juices, salads and mung beans but nothing could be further from the truth! In amongst having fun in life why not add in foods proven to help you? What we need is hormonal balance and you can literally eat yourself the plants to do this! This book: Grow Your Own HRT (Sally J Duffell) will tell you all you need to know. Brilliant. REVIEW

A roaring fire and flavoursome food at The Sun Inn, Winforton I went for Fig & Honey Salad with Goat’s Cheese & Parma Ham on a bed of Rocket. Oh my – both starters were so, so flavoursome. Mum and I both said we could have eaten them all over again.

Last month we were warmly invited to The Sun Inn at Winforton by new owners Wendy and Tony. With it being on my doorstep, I was looking forward to this one. It was a cold January evening. My mum and I arrived at the village pub and restaurant and were grateful for the open fire, a superb addition to any country pub if you ask me. Tony and Wendy have been at The Sun since October 2017. They are originally from Shrewsbury – Wendy has run pubs before, Tony was in the engineering business for 39 years, and they’ve even run a pub in Spain for five years.

Moving onto our mains. Mum chose Roasted Sea Bass with Chorizo, Red Onion, Olives & Vine Tomatoes. She said, again, very tasty – the chorizo was strong in flavour but not too overpowering. I of course went for steak, I do love a good bit of meat, especially when you see the local butcher’s name on the description: Paddy Sweeney’s Steak with Handcut Chips & Vine Tomatoes, with Peppercorn Sauce as an extra. I decided on the 8oz to save room for the third course; I couldn’t let my readers down, after all! The steak had a really appetizing flavour and was cooked perfectly medium-rare as I’d asked. So there was just enough room for a dessert, but we shared since we’d realised that portions at The Sun Inn are generous. Just enough breathing space, and our Belgium Chocolate & Rum Pot with Baileys & Chocolate Ripple Ice Cream arrived. It also came with a little honeycomb and a rather large raspberry, which complimented the dish extremely well. What was really nice to hear, and rare, was that all desserts are home made by their chef. All meat is sourced from Paddy Sweeney and Guy Tudge. Cheese from Bob Pope. Fish from Lay & Robson. Ice cream from Just Rachel’s, who prides herself on using double cream. So all in all, locally sourced, which I feel is so important for the local economy. Wendy and Tony are keen to make their own mark on The Sun. They plan to bring back a pub feel, yet

We ordered our drinks at the bar, mum asking for an elderflower water, me opting for half a cider. Then we were shown to our table, in a corner near to the roaring fire. They’ve kept on local chef Rose but have put their own stamp on the menu, offering a main menu and a specials board. I do enjoy it when you really have to debate over several dishes. Mum chose Warm Chicken, Bacon & Avocado Salad.

by keeping Rose, the chef, superb food will continue to be served. They are currently working on creating three letting rooms upstairs. There are plans to revamp the rest rooms. And their large beer garden will be made more family friendly with a play area and new seating and tables. Great news for us as we’re in walking distance. I can taste the cold cider now, whilst the children happily play! Under the new ownership comes new opening hours: Monday – closed all day. Tuesday – 7pm– close. Wednesday through to Saturday – 12pm– 2pm and 6.30pm–close. Sunday – 12pm–close. At Easter opening hours will increase: watch this space. Also keep your ear to the ground about special nights planned: to date they have had quiz nights, local band nights and speciality suppers.

Under New Ownership Family Friendly Pub Light Lunches served 12–2pm

Our evening was marvellous. The atmosphere Wendy and Tony have created, along with the food being served and that open fire makes you want to come back. Don’t just take my word for it, pop in and say hi.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I draw together my thoughts for this month’s Wye Local column, a further burst of traditional winter weather is forecast and the Powys County Council gritting fleet is on notice. Already the early weeks of 2018 have had their lighter and darker moments and I shall reflect briefly upon them. It has been really heartening to see members of the local community pulling together during recent weeks, when the temperatures plummeted, helping vulnerable friends and neighbours, by checking on them, doing a little shopping or checking their paths were clear and free of ice. When the vestiges of Storm Eleanor struck, bringing down trees and branches, it was also great to see local farmers and others helping to clear away the debris and assist hard pressed front line workers. Unfortunately, though, the extreme weather has coincided with a spike in serious illnesses – and we have come together several times in recent weeks to mark the passing of much loved local residents, whose contribution to our community life will be missed. Our community is characterised by the readiness of many local people to rally around, not just in times of snow and plunging temperatures, but also to raise funds for those in need of help. Only recently the Hay, Brecon & Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTS4R) Group held its AGM at Gwernyfed Rugby Club, reflecting on a very busy and varied year of activities. It is great to see how HBTS4R has inspired people of every generation to provide support for those who have come to Wales fleeing abuse, persecution and violence. Amongst other things, they are currently appealing for chess sets and children’s games, as well as dictionaries and encyclopedias. Donations can be made at Talgarth Library, St Mary’s Church, Hay-on-Wye and the Welsh Liberal Democrat Constituency Office at 4, Watergate, Brecon. Another initiative that has gained widespread support locally is the Drew Barker-Wright Charity, which aims to fund research into and raise

awareness of the Paediatric Chordoma, as well as providing practical support to families affected by it. The recent Warming Winter Supper at The Bakers’ Table was a sell-out and raised £1,244.75 for the cause. Anyone interested can follow the Charity’s activities on their Facebook page. As half-term approaches, preparations at the Talgarth and Bronllys school sites are moving into overdrive, as the pupils and staff of Ysgol y Mynydd Du get ready for the historic move to their new area school on Hay Road, Talgarth. I know that there is considerable excitement amongst many of the pupils but it is a major logistical exercise for all involved, as indeed for our Branch Librarian, Jan Shivel, as she prepares to move our library to its new home. Whilst not everyone relishes change of this kind, I think it is important that we seize this new opportunity for our communities to grow together. In particular, there is real scope for the school and library to be of mutual benefit, as two vital public services, embedded in our town for the years to come. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, via Twitter @WmPowell2016 or Facebook @WilliamPowellLD. My next advice surgery is on Friday 2nd February from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre – no appointment is necessary. I also have a joint surgery with my Welsh Liberal Democrat colleague, Kirsty Williams AM on Friday 9th February, from 3pm in Talgarth Library. For an appointment with us, please contact the Brecon and Radnorshire Constituency Office on (01874) 625739 or by email: kirsty.williams@assembly.wales. Best wishes, William

News from Kirsty Williams We should make 2018 the year for young people As each year passes the odds seem to be more and more stacked against young people. Whether it be the lack of affordable housing or decently-paid job opportunities after they leave education, or reductions in recreation and youth services in our towns and villages, for many of our young the world must seem a very hostile place. As Brecon & Radnorshire’s Welsh Assembly Member (AM) I try to promote the interests of the young here as vigorously as I can; and there are some good news stories to tell about what is happening locally. In the Gwernyfed High School catchment area five new stateof-the-art primary schools are quickly emerging and will provide the best possible educational start for the young children of the area. In Brecon construction of the longawaited new High School is about to begin – what a fantastic opportunity to improve and develop secondary education there after years of difficulty in buildings that have long been very unsatisfactory. But giving our youngsters a good start in school is only the beginning – the task is to ensure that their life chances beyond that, whatever their abilities, are the best we can make them. In that respect, here in Wales and across the UK there is much to improve. At the heart of the solutions is the need to provide a vibrant local economy with top-class local services, so that the young people who are the future of our local communities can live and earn a decent living locally if they want to. Far too many are denied this option. It’s one of the reasons our official unemployment levels locally are so low – young (and not so young) people seeking work and better life opportunities tend to move away to find it. One of my goals for 2018 is to do what I can to start to reverse this trend of so many young people leaving Powys and the ageing of our local population. This is not something any AM can do on their own, it has to be a collective effort, involving local politicians and organisations, business groups and community leaders listening to the young and responding to their needs. Oh, and by the way, providing good mobile ’phone coverage and fast internet speeds is only a part of the solution. In a post-Brexit world it will not be easy, but as your local AM I promise to do all I can to make it happen.

Farming Post Brexit The world’s population is growing at an ever accelerated rate, with migration from rural areas to cities and from climate change affected nations to wealthier less affected nations. The demand for finer, higher quality food is growing across the globe. Farmers and producers across the UK are embracing new technology and artificial intelligence to enhance the way in which production can increase. A role which may have taken dozens of people weeks to do can now be done in a fraction of the time by one individual and a machine. These global changes raise political and moral questions as to how the Government and society embraces or challenges them. The Conservative Government is driving an ever more eco-friendly green agenda, and I welcome that. We are the party that represents rural Britain and protecting our environment should be at the top of our priority, as long as we don’t bend to the green lobby’s left wing social agenda. Of course Brexit will mean change. But, critically, what it means most of all is that we can once more decide how we shape and meet the challenges ahead. Brexit means we don’t need any longer to follow the path dictated by the Common Agricultural Policy. We can have our own - national - food policy, our own agriculture policy, our own environment policies, our own economic policies, shaped by our own collective interests. The CAP was designed, like so many aspects of the EU, for another world, the post-war period when memories of food shortages were hauntingly powerful and the desire to support a particular model of land use was wrapped up with ideas of a stable countryside that seemed reassuringly attractive after the trauma of industrial-scale conflict. Paying land owners for the amount of agricultural land they have is unjust, inefficient and drives perverse outcomes. It gives the most from the public purse to those who have the most private wealth. I will be working closely with people such as Michel Gove MP and other rural organisations to ensure that we create a post Brexit agricultural policy which rewards those who produce and protect our environment. It is vital we manage this change effectively and make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity.

News from Drover Cycles Was one of your New Year resolutions to cycle more? It’s not too late to start now! Getting on a bike makes sense for your health, your wallet and our planet. If you are new to cycling pop in to Drover Cycles on Forest Road (opposite GP surgery) for a friendly chat and advice on getting started. The local cycling club, Velo Hay, is a great place to meet fellow cyclists and there are local Breeze rides for women too – check out www.letsride.co.uk/breeze for upcoming outings! If you’re already a cyclist and want to take things to the next level in 2018, why not enter a cycling challenge? Longer days and better weather are just around the corner and the training will get easier as your fitness improves!

See www.drovercycles.co.uk/events for our events calendar. Did you know you can now find Drover Cycles on Hay’s Thursday market too? News from Gwernyfed High School Gwernyfed High School’s students have now had time to settle back into their normal non-ski-filled lives after recently visiting France to ski at the Les Deux Alpes resort. Although the bus journey lasted a lifetime, it was definitely worth the wait! With some pupils having never skied before, everyone was racing down the slopes by the end of the week. Pupils embarked on a week long ski trip which was filled with skiing and other activities and although some may say skiing is the only reason for this trip, however such an experience helps increase

confidence within the pupils as well as developing independence with tasks such as looking after their own money, preparing themselves for the day on the slopes and being able to survive without help from mum and dad. Pupils from GHS loved the ski trip and some even spoke of hoping to go on it again. It’s not every year that you get to ski down a beautiful mountain in Mont-de-lanes, France, and it’s become such an integral part of Gwernyfed High School life. Pupils are so lucky to have such a rewarding and satisfying opportunity. News from U3A Hay The lives of the Virgin Mary and Saint Barbara

shaped castles in ways that we might find difficult to understand today. At the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 20th February at 10.30am, Rodney Mace will show how these two women’s power far exceeded the military aspirations of any earthly sovereign in his presentation ‘Women, Castles and Power in Late Medieval Britain’. New year, new time! After lunch, our afternoon session will begin at the earlier time of 1.15pm when Janet Robinson will describe how women’s roles have influenced social change, from her new book, Family Matters: Four generations of change through two World Wars. The day is open to everyone, at £5 for members and £7 for visitors. Please do come and join us at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. For further information, phone 01497 821595. News from Timbuktu Good wishes sent to Hay from Timbuktu at the start of 2018 demonstrate the value of the twinning to the people in Timbuktu. “The year that has ended has been rich in lessons

but also has been marked by your relentless commitment despite the extremely difficult context in which we act to the benefit of our laborious communities. Your sense of humanity has given hope to the most vulnerable and strengthened their resilience to the pitfalls of the moment. “We remain convinced that our efforts will not be in vain and that our beloved homeland will recover its letters of nobility imbued with tolerance, peace and concord. “May this year 2018 be for you, your families and those who are dear to you, a year of health, peace, success, happiness and strengthen our bonds. Happy new year 2018!” The focus of H2T efforts this year is to refurbish toilets in three partner schools. There has been no investment in building in the schools for many years and the dirty toilets with a lack of privacy mean that girls miss time at school and their education is curtailed. Donations to build these toilets can be made by texting TMBK02 plus the donation amount to 70070 or by visiting hay2timbuktu.org.
