“Wye Local WORKS! If you’re a local business you’d be crazy not to use it. I’ve advertised with them since it first started – every issue! Even in a small community you need to get known. Wye Local is your perfect conduit.” Cat Wyllie-Fox of Gym & Tonic Health Club

Hello Welcome to our May issue – known as ‘Festival month’. I think we’re extremely lucky to have Hay Festival on our doorstep. Team this up with How The Light Gets In (who I must add are offering 50% discount to locals on tickets) and our area comes alive for May and early June. Yes, there will be parking issues. Yes, the tourists will walk in the middle of the roads. But personally I think it’s a super time of year and will be sure to attend my local events whenever possible, be it with the children or minus the children and with a cider or three! A few new advertisers join us this month: Black Mountain Botanicals, page 2. Georgina Cooke – Holistic Treatments, page 2. Barking Dog Pet Photography, page 31. Be sure to check out what they offer. So most of the five new schools have been built now, and pupils moved in. Check out our new feature on page 3, where we’ll be showcasing each of the schools over the next few months. How exciting for our area. On pages 28–35 we have a Four-legged Friends feature. What a great array of businesses and services Clare has sourced for you. For our readers who love animals, this is the section for you. Lastly we’re pleased to announce our donation to Wales Air Ambulance from last year’s calendar sales, see page 40. Thanks to each and everyone of you who purchased a copy. Keep an eye out for our 2019 Local Landscapes Calendar, out mid-May. Enjoy May. Let it be full of sunshine and outings. We do miss the hall being in the middle of the school, but we have The Street now instead! The Street is a multi-purpose space in the middle of the school which houses our library, a technology area, and a Cwtch Cymraeg, amongst other things! Does the site offer any other clubs? We have Cheeky Monkeys Breakfast, After School and Holiday Clubs on site. Any future plans for the school? We are planning to develop a school garden, to reinstate our wildlife area and develop a playground with exciting new equipment for the children. Local Talent: Lauren Litchfield Artist name? My artist name is LOVEL, as I have five names: Lauren Olivia Victoria Ellen Litchfield. Type of artist? Cartooning and illustrations with some fine art. Range of products? I use watercolours, acrylics, oils sometimes, pro-markers, prisma colours, ink, charcoal, gradient pencils, graphite pencils and other sharp pen markers. Price range? My work sells from £35 and then goes up depending on what I am selling and how large. How long have you been an artist? From the minute my mother put a pencil in my hands at the age of three I could say, but if I think about how long I have been selling my work, then from the age of 18 – so four years now. Where did you train or gain experience? I attended a foundation degree in Merthyr Tydfil University Colleg. Artist statement: My name is Lauren Litchfield. My artist name is Lovel. I am 22 years old and I have recently moved to Hay with my parents. I suffer from Aspergers and find it very hard to socialise with others. However academically I am fine and I flew through school passing all my exams plus three A levels and my Art Foundation Degree. Aspergers comes with its problems. I find it hard to interact with others and I suffer from depression. I find it so much easier to sit at home working on my art. My mother, who is a self-employed artist, suggested I start creating some work to sell. So for the last two years I have been doing this. I received a grant from the Wales & West Housing Association for equipment to help me set up a small business. I have sold a few paintings and small pieces over the last year. I also recently illustrated a short story book for a children’s author, about penguins flying the sleigh for Santa. The book will be out this Christmas. I would

love to broaden my horizons and have a show of my work at a gallery but my Aspergers always makes me think that I could not accomplish this. Every day is a struggle to accept that my work is good, not just OK. Aspergers does not help your self-esteem but with the loving support of many family and friends I get through every day and keep working at producing new pieces. For the future I would love to get a small part-time job which could then subsidise me while I work on my art and the projects I have in my mind.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Twyford Cookers of Leominster Rose & Ian Norman set up Twyford Cookers of Leominster in 1994, with a love of AGA cookers. Twyford Cookers employs 13 people since becoming an AGA distributor in 2014, and covering a post code area including Powys, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and parts of Shropshire.Their primary customers are discerning cooks and homemakers, from those who love a comforting country kitchen to fans of the modern classic kitchen style. When was the business started? In 1994 after we moved to Herefordshire and set up Twyford Farm as our business and home base. We renovated the farmhouse to incorporate a large farmhouse kitchen and installed a four-oven oil-fired AGA cooker which was renovated by my husband. In the early days our customers visited the farm and my husband renovated the AGAs in the attached barn. My son joined us in the business shortly afterwards. The business grew from our good reputation and happy customers. We eventually moved the business from the farm to a factory unit in Moreton-on-Lugg. What made you set up the business? We had run an antique shop in Cheltenham, specializing in antique fireplaces. We experienced two recessions during that time, and decided to move to Herefordshire to start a new life. Where are you based? We are now based on Leominster Enterprise Estate, loving our wonderful showroom with lots of room for customers to park. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? We are currently engaged in developing our showroom to encompass built-in cookers. This is Phase 3 of our expansion. We are a Rayburn Heat Centre, and stock AGA cookers, Masterchef, Rangemaster, Lacanche, La Cornue Fe, Brittania, Fisher Paykel and Falcon cookers, and many other AGA related products. We have an AGA cookshop and a Betty Twyford homewares shop at the same location. We also still renovate a small number of selected and newer AGA cookers for those customers who are on a kitchen budget. We also offer 0% finance which has been a tremendous help for some of our customers. Have you won any awards in your business? Awarded

and authorized by AGA to be their official renovator nationwide in the late 1990s.This enabled our business to grow. Do you need to do any annual training to keep up your qualification up to date? We frequently send our staff to France to receive training from the Lacanche factory, and to the AGA headquarters in Telford. Our Rayburn engineers attend the Telford factory for updates in technology. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? To be prepared to work past the 5pm shut off to catch up on the day, and sometimes to work on a Sunday! To plan, to seek new products and knowledge and to be understanding of our customers’ needs. We are always polite and we go the extra mile when it comes to giving the right advice and service. We ensure that people have a good experience when they visit our showroom and we offer them cake and biscuits and coffee or tea when they arrive. What is your ideal job/client? We love to identify the needs of our customers – often our customers are contemplating a kitchen make-over, and we offer four different kitchen companies to give them the advice should they need it. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Growing our business from very small beginnings, and surviving the ups and downs of the British economy. We are a family-run business. My husband is CEO, I am the marketing director, my son is the technical director and my daughter is our resident cook. We run cooking classes and demonstrations for would-be customers to help them gain confidence in their choice of AGA or Rayburn or Rangecooker. What would be your dream assignment? To host a group of artists in our upstairs showroom during hArt week. We’ll offer tea and cake in September, so come along and follow the pink signs! Is there anything else you’d like people to know about your business? We’ve developed our own range of kitchen textiles, enamelware and homewares with our Betty Twyford brand. The collection is related to running a domestic kitchen. We’re focused on creating our range to be British made and made in Herefordshire.

Get to really know... Peter Florence Peter Florence runs the Hay Festival, which he started with his parents in 1987. He lives with his wife Becky and their four sons in a cottage in Michaelchurch. The Festival runs 24 May to 3 June this year: www.hayfestival.org. Place of birth? Born in London, grew up in Cardiff, moved to Hay at 17. Mother Welsh since Domesday, Father – South African, Malay,Tex-Mex, Galician. Welsh for Rugby, English for language. Where do you live now? On Cefn Hill up towards Michaelchurch – near enough to walk home from The Bridge. Marital status? Happy. Occupation? Festival Director, sun-dancer, teen-taxidriver. Children? Four boys. Pets? Three cats, three cockers. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Scooby Doo. Behind every ghoul and freak was the janitor or the guy who cleans the pool. They debunked the supernatural. Are you a collector of anything? Books, mainly – so I live in heaven. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? I’d like to be the kind of animal who got to stay in the jungle with Balloo and Bagheera because they are so much fun to hang out with. It made NO sense to me that Mowgli left them to go to the man village. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? I’d have the power to keep libraries open and buzzing, to make them palaces – like they are in so many other countries around the world. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? I run pretty much on autopilot through feeding the animals, breakfast, two school runs and the drive to work. So I guess my first thought, at about 10am, is – I hope it’s Wednesday and that Kate will be here in a minute. Kate (Brotherton-Ratcliffe) brings her pastries to the festival office at 10.30 on Wednesdays.

What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I read a lot at night. I am normally adventuring off in whichever story I am in. Do you believe in ghosts? Ghosts, God, a free press and the British Parliament all look pretty ropey to me. I believe that people live on in their loved ones’ inheritance and in the spirit they have shared. And I believe in memory – and the way it conjures feelings and yes – people. Most exciting thing you’ve won? I delivered my eldest son in a hospital waiting room. It felt like we’d all won. But, winning isn’t really important. I think it’s how you live through loss and grief and pain that defines who you are and how you live in the world. Two lessons life has taught you? Get a sense of perspective. What I do isn’t frontline, death or life. I am not an A&E nurse or a combat soldier. If I do my job wrong the worst that can happen is that people get a bit bored for an hour or so. But if it goes well, then you can make people happy, and share that rarest of wonders – a story and an idea. What makes you grumpy? Meh. I am irritated by my own stupidity. Teenage crush? Morgana le Fay, Gareth Edwards, then Nina Simone. But Morgana... it’s complicated. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Hay Library. Have any bad habits? A toxic combination of laziness, stupidity, gluttony and liberal politics. What book would you recommend to others? Aha. Well – it depends on what the people like to read. I am really happy to invite any Wye Local reader to pop into the festival office for a coffee and a chat and then I can see what I’d recommend. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I wish I had more time. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? The Globe Theatre; London, 1599. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: I want to see what my boys do when they are free, I want to learn to cook more elegantly, I would love to walk more, and to sleep more. Name one regret you have: I wish I’d known how little I knew.

Name one thing you miss about being a kid: The joy of living in the present with all its intensity and immediacy. Name one thing you love about being an adult: The joy of understanding the present in the context of past history and future possibility. What’s your favourite song of the moment? Imelda May – ‘Johnny’s got a Boom Boom’. What’s your favourite song of all time? KD Laing’s Juno Awards live performance of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Hang out. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Hang out and walk. Have any hidden talents? I don’t even have any apparent talents. What would be your dream job? Apart from the dream job I have, if I weren’t doing this, I’d like to be a pianist in a bar somewhere in Latin America. If you had to change your name, what would you change it to? The Narrator. Sum yourself up in five words: I read and play. Jammy.

Protecting wildlife for the future

be a diminutive relative of the Cow Parsley and Hedge Parsley that adorn our roadside verges in the summer. The tuber isn’t (and shouldn’t be) dug up for food any more and old books and herbals do not have anything good to say about the taste of the tubers (or nuts). But it may possibly be the origin of the “Nuts in May” of the rhyme or alternatively this could be a corruption of “knots of may”, referring to the blossom of Common Hawthorn. Certainly, no conventional nuts are available for collecting in May! Most of the common names recorded preserve the “nut” element with Earthnut (Arnut in Scotland) being another common one. The Welsh name means “Nuts of the earth”.

Conopodium majus Pignut (Welsh: Cneuen y ddaear) This dainty little plant appears quite early in many of our meadows and particularly woodland edges – both under the trees and in grassland nearby. The flower heads appear above thread-like leaves. It is readily seen to

Your potential, not your past I think you reach a certain age and begin to realise the shape of life can be funnel-like! Certainly as I’ve reached my mid 50s I have NO TIME to dance to anyone else’s tune. You become aware of the fact there is likely more behind you than ahead, and BOY does that focus the mind! It’s fabulous! I have no real regrets except wasting too much time in jobs that never served me, relationships going nowhere, not investing enough time for myself but, as C. S. Lewis said “You’re never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” And as I enter a new phase in my life I feel the need to reaffirm who I am and where I’m going. I’ve determined I’ll abandon certain traits that hold me back. I’m adamant I’ll have fun! We can choose who we want to be and opt for our full potential. But we HAVE to design it – we have to work on what we want to be. If you wait for the future to shape itself you’ll be dragged along like a log in the Wye! One morning, I woke up and knew I had to make some major changes. I was sick of making the same relationship mistakes and knew

I had to focus on the next instalment! Last year I spent months working on a project. I put it out to 10 people and got 10 lovely reviews. We decided it would work really well over a day (not the 3 days I had allocated). I got serious RSIs from over- typing, so put it on the back burner. By doing so I lost for myself what I had tried to create for others. Now I’ve remodelled my personal life, I’ve made space, lost distractions, and shifted energy (do you know what I mean – it always happens!). I am SO ready to take back the reins, and so ready to see if this works for you as it did my 10 volunteers: “Definitely empowering Cat, Your course really helped me get back on top. Thanks everyone!” S.H. The main focus of the course is to recognise that your cognitive thoughts are not static. You can literally change how you think! Want to try?! (see advert below). Unicorns, almost by Owen Sheers to première in Hay John Retallack, who will direct the première of Unicorns, almost at The Swan in Hay, introduces the show: “While on tour with Owen Sheers’ play, Pink Mist, which I directed for the Bristol Old Vic, Owen introduced me to the work of Keith Douglas. I was fascinated by his 1944 memoir From Alamein to Zem Zem and also by his extraordinary poems. I found it hard to believe that Douglas had died at the age of only 24 – his writing is already so rich and accomplished.” Emma Balch, the producer of Unicorns, almost, is, through The Story of Books, intent on bringing the essential nature of print and printing to life for a wider public. Hence, everyone who attends a performance of the play will receive a limited edition letterpress print of one of Douglas’ poems. This play is an apt first outing for her innovative long-term project. Emma says: “Owen and I are especially delighted that Dan Krikler is playing the role of Keith Douglas. Dan played the leading role of Arthur on the national tour of Pink Mist and we are delighted that he is available for the threeweek run of the play in Hay-onWye. “We hope that many of you will come to the play and enjoy it as much as we have in rediscovering this brilliant young poet of 1944.” Find out more about the show, follow backstage developments (including the set design) and buy tickets online: www.unicornsalmost.com. To book tickets over the phone, call Emma Balch on 07879 373431 or 01497 822931.

The benefits of mediation Wye Valley Mediation is run by Claire Jackson, who began professional practice as a barrister in 1994. On moving to Hay she decided that she wanted to help families avoid court unless it was necessary – separation is traumatic enough, without the added cost and stress of litigation. Claire says that some degree of conflict is inevitable when couples separate as our emotions impact on our problem-solving ability. It can help to have an independent third person present (the mediator) who can provide structure to the conversation about present and future planning. So what sort of things might you want to talk about with your mediator?

• Your children’s living and care arrangements • How to tell the children about the changes to their family life. • Money; for your children and for yourselves. • Homes; where everyone will live. Mediators won’t make the decisions for you, but they will empower you to make decisions that you can both agree on; by giving you relevant legal information, identifying what information you need to gather, and helping you generate options for a settlement. Most importantly mediators help you to focus on your children’s needs.Your agreement is not binding until you have had advice from your solicitor, but your mediator will save you time and money by gathering everything the solicitor will need in order to advise fully. TOP TIP from Claire – go to www.entitledto.co.uk to discover all the benefits you are entitled to on separation.

REVIEW

Delicious and delivered! With over 25 years’ experience and many awards under their belt, Wiltshire Farm Foods know all about making really good food. Their chefs are always working on creating delicious recipes for you to enjoy and prepare simply at home in the microwave or the oven. They are proud to be an ethical and sustainable company and are a member of the Ethical Trading Initiative and proud supporters of British Food & Farming Industries. They use sustainable ingredients whenever possible. The food labels are clear and easy to follow and with no cardboard sleeves there’s less waste, and you can fit more dishes into the freezer! My husband and I sampled three main courses and three desserts. Firstly the Cheesy Vegetable Bake, mixed vegetables in a Cheddar cheese sauce, topped with sauté potatoes, peas and carrots. Extremely tasty and the vegetables were just perfect.

My husband loved the Beef with Roast Potatoes. Good quality tender beef and the potatoes were just how he likes them. Crisp on the outside and fluffy in the middle. So far we are impressed! The Chicken and Vegetable Casserole was delicious. My favourite I think, although it was difficult to choose. The desserts were equally delicious. The coffee dessert was light and fluffy, and the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Custard was to die for! My husband particularly enjoyed the Gluten-Free Jam Sponge. All in all a superb selection of nutritious frozen ready meals for all the family, and so easy to cook. There’s nothing not to like! The choice is amazing, but don’t take my word for it, just go and order their super brochure right now. You won’t regret it. Review written by Clare Williams

Learn how to make natural aromatherapeutic soap at home – it’s wizard!

Jackie Kennett of Castello de Haye invited me to join her in making some natural botanical soap, and what a super experience I had. After switching on the slow-cooker we walked to Ffynnon yr Alarch, known locally as the Swans Well, to collect the spring water, an important ingredient with which to make the soap. The Swans Well has healing properties in the the folklore of the district and it is said to be a certain cure for ailments, particularly sprains to the hands, feet and the eyes. Ideal for me then! There is also some evidence that it is the celebrated well of the beautiful St Keyna, 25th daughter of Prince Brychan. Many sought her in marriage and as she journeyed beyond the Severn she built many oratories. It is said that wherever St Keyna stayed, a spring of water is to be found. Jackie allowed me to measure out all the ingredients myself. These consist of coconut oil, olive oil, spring water, lye, essential oil, Vitamin E and a drop of rosemary oleoresin. She was very patient and trusting, although keeping an eagle eye on me to make sure everything was the correct weight. Measurements need to be accurate, everything by weight, not volume. It’s all rather scientific, this soap making. She’s got some extremely precise scales in her workshop. Hubble, bubble, toil and trouble. I felt a little bit like a Harry Potter character creating this amazing concoction, measuring, pouring exact amounts and

stirring. I was just missing the wizard’s pointed black hat! The scent of my particular soap is Rose Geranium but there are many others you can choose from including Lavender, Citronella, Marigold and even Black Mountain Charcoal Soap! Eventually Jackie advised me that the mixture was at just the right ‘setting’ to be able to be poured into the silicon moulds. It was getting very exciting now. I spooned the gel like soap into the moulds and Jackie put them in the freezer for them to set, and that’s when we had our break for proper coffee and posh biscuits! I’ve known Jackie for some years now but we hardly ever have time to have a proper catch up, so this was our chance. The 45 minutes flew by and then we we went back into the workshop to check the setting of the soap. Perfect! I took it out of the moulds and there it was. My very own soap to take home with me. The fragrance filled the room! Jackie wrapped it in some smart cream tissue paper and I took it home in a Thoughtful Gardener tote bag. Thank you, Jackie, for an extremely therapeutic morning. What an experience! To make your own natural soap just get in touch with Jackie via the contact details in her advert (right). It’s £50 well spent and you will take enough soap home to be able to give some away to friends and family. Article written by Clare Williams

New in Town: Kinnersley Cattery

Photo: Kim Manning of Kinnersley Cattery What is the area in which you work? Kinnersley – customers come from Herefordshire and Powys. Why the Hay area? There does not appear to be a lot of choice for catteries in this area so I am looking to attract customers from this area, and eventually get involved with the local cat rescue centre. Why did you decide to open this business? I have had cats all my life, and for several years I have been looking to get more involved with animals, so when the offer of redundancy from my previous job materialised, this gave me the opportunity to start this self-built business. What are some of challenges you’ve encountered? This whole project from start to finish has been a challenge, pushing ourselves to keep going whenever we had any free time, and also, sourcing materials at the most affordable cost. Sometimes the internet is really great, but then buying local can also be the best option, even at a higher price. The business side of setting up a cattery has been a whole new learning curve, what with learning about accounts, and all the marketing involved, knowing the best places to advertise and doing leaflet drops in the snow and rain! What do you wish you had known before you started? That it was going to take so long as we were always under pressure to get it finished so that we could start making a living. Is this the first business you have launched? Yes. What type of education or experience helps you to run this business? A lifetime of giving homes to cats and kittens is one of the best experiences to have! I have hands-on experience learning the ropes in several catteries, and have obtained an online Diploma in Cattery Management which I passed

with a Distinction. I also attended a self employment course, run through the Jobcentre, to help me with the legal and business side of things. Describe a typical day in your business: I get up and immediately go to see if all the resident cats are up and about, give them their breakfast and fresh water, and generally tidy up their chalet and litter tray. As I am giving them their meals, I take the opportunity to check they are ok health-wise and have no problems. I like to spend time with all the cats, throughout the day, interacting with them and getting them to play. Late afternoon they will have their tea and sometimes I will have another tidy up, and then leave them to settle down for the night. Throughout the day and evening, I will catch up with any paperwork and booking enquiries. Then it’s off to bed, having already checked the agenda ready for the next day. Any advice to new businesses in this area? If your heart’s in it, I am sure your business will succeed (with a lot of hard work thrown in)!

New in Town: Barking Dog Pet Photography Where are you based or what is the area in which you work? I am based near Old Radnor, Presteigne. However I’m happy to travel for photo shoots. Why did you decide to open this business? I wanted to combine my passion for animals with my love and experience of working as a professional photographer. What are some of the challenges you encountered? Working with animals is always fun and a challenge, the biggest one is often getting their attention during a shoot. I find a pocket full of treats comes in handy. Is this the first business you have launched? No, I have worked as a professional photographer for over 15 years. What type of education or experience helped you to open this business? I trained in Fine Art and have an MA in Photography. I have also worked extensively with animals, and from a very early age

have helped volunteer with many rescue shelters. Alongside working as a photographer I have set up, run and managed a dog rescue. I am passionate about all types of animals and have worked with many different breeds of dogs and cats with a variety of personalities. Describe a typical day in your business: I arrange to meet my client at their home, their pet’s favourite location or in my studio. After getting to know the pet I will begin the photo shoot. This normally lasts a few hours. I will then return to my studio and edit all the photos from the day; the work is then produced either as prints or bespoke pieces of art ready to be displayed in your home. I aim to make each session with your pet a fun and enjoyable time for both you and your pets, producing professional and contemporary pet portraits that can be treasured forever.

Tregoyd Riding Centre is 60! Tregoyd Riding Centre, one of the first pony trekking centres in Wales, was set up by the current owner’s parents back in 1958, so it is 60 this year! Since then, their son Haydn Jones (also 60 this month!) has expanded the business considerably and it now includes a riding centre, approved by the British Horse Society, and also a recognised Pony Club Centre. In addition, a thriving livery yard is run on site. Also located on the farm is a bunkhouse with selfcatering/catered accommodation for 48 people as well as a bungalow, sleeping 9, which can be combined with bunkhouse bookings if required. The centre also offers riding activity holidays. There’s a lot going on here, but with some common themes. Firstly, whatever service you are accessing you’ll be dealing with friendly, knowledgeable, experienced and qualified staff. Secondly, the spectacular surroundings; whether you’re in the school or hacking out from the farm

onto the trails of the Black Mountains, there are amazing views all around. Finally, the Centre is committed to ensuring that your needs are met. For riding, whether lessons or rides out, they match you with a suitable horse, tailor the lesson or ride to your needs and ability and ensure that you stay safe. Similarly for the accommodation, catered or ‘doing it yourself ’ – it’s your choice. As a final note, the centre is accredited and inspected by Wales Trekking & Riding Association, AALS, BHS, Visit Wales and Powys County Council. So don’t hesitate – book yourself a lesson or a ride!

Keeping parasites at bay Hay Vets are coming to the end of a very busy lambing season and it would appear that spring has finally sprung!

an invasion – prevention is definitely better than cure.

Now that the weather is starting to get a little bit warmer, all those sleepy fleas and ticks will be looking for food, so it is really important to make sure that your pet’s antiparasite treatments are up to date.

Ticks can cause infection where they attach but they are also an important transmitter of diseases in dogs and people, the commonest one being Lyme disease.

As well as being unpleasant for your pet (and you) by causing skin irritation, did you know that both fleas and ticks carry diseases and other parasites? Fleas carry tapeworm eggs, so if your pet nibbles at a flea and accidentally eats it, it can then become infested with worms. Fleas also carry an infection called Bartonella that causes cat scratch disease in people. An adult flea can lay up to 50 eggs per day, so by the time you spot an infestation you may already have

Hay Vets runs a number of complimentary nurse clinics where their fantastic qualified nurses can give you excellent and up-to-date advice on parasite control, dental care, diet and much more. You can also make substantial savings as a Hay Vets Pet Club member on flea and worm treatments, as well as spreading the costs of day-to-day pet care. Call the practice on 01497 820 863 to make an appointment, or email manager@hayvets.co.uk for more information.

Dementia Action Week

This May, Pugh’s will be raising money throughout the month to donate to HayDay Café, a safe and supportive environment where people who have dementia or an associated condition, and their carers, can enjoy socialising in a café setting, with the opportunity to have some fun. Pugh’s staff have seen the devastating impact dementia can have on individuals and their loved ones. As a rural community we face an even greater challenge and require an even greater community response. Pugh’s fully supports the Alzheimer’s Society’s call to action, and senior members of staff have attended the Dementia Friends learning session to learn more about the illness and make the shop a safe space for those suffering with dementia. Pugh’s will be raising money through a raffle as well as donating all plastic bag sales through the month of May, coinciding with National Dementia Action Week, 21st to 27th May. Please support them.

Did you buy our 2018 Landscapes Calendar? Last year when producing the calendar we decided to give something back to our community. With so many charities it was hard to chose just one. But finally we decided on Wales Air Ambulance as we felt this is a vitally needed service in our area. Thank you to every one of you who purchased a calendar – 50p from each one sold went direct to the charity. In their own words: “Wales Air Ambulance would like to thank Cariads Local Ltd for their recent donation of £634.50. The charity receives no government or lottery funding and relies solely on public donations to sustain the service. In 2017 Wales Air Ambulance attended over 2,500 missions across Wales, ranging from road traffic collisions to medical emergencies and serious trauma. With each mission costing on average £1,500, the money raised will help to keep the four red helicopters flying. “Wales Air Ambulance is proud to be not only the largest Air Ambulance operation in the UK but also

a service with a dedicated Paediatric division. The Children’s Wales Air Ambulance is the specialist Paediatric and Neonatal division of the charity providing emergency transport to poorly children and babies. The donation will help us to continue our work with some of Wales’ youngest patients. “The money will also help Wales Air Ambulance to reach the goal of providing a 24-hour operation. It is the aim of the charity to be able to provide a 24-hour service in the future, meaning that the lifesaving crews will be on standby day and night. Recently, the charity’s advanced helicopters were equipped with powerful lighting in readiness for night-flying. Any donations made to the charity will help sustain and futureproof the service. News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth After a couple of months that have been pretty challenging in terms of weather, with the heavy snowfalls of March giving way to incessant rain and waterlogged ground conditions in early April, the forecasters are promising a warmer, drier spell on the horizon. Even in these difficult times, when the outside world seems more turbulent than ever, and security, both at home and abroad, cannot be taken for granted, it is amazing what warmth and sunshine can do to lift our spirits. Similarly, the lambs in the fields all around are starting to thrive as they enjoy the sun on their backs, rather than having to cower from the rain and the wind. One event that will certainly benefit from a sustained spell of fine weather in early May is Talgarth Walking Festival which celebrates its sixth birthday this year. Hosted by Talgarth Walkers are Welcome Group, the festival runs from Friday 4th May until Monday 7th May, encompassing the early May Bank Holiday. It is a great opportunity for us to showcase our stunning natural environment and to welcome visitors from near and far. I know that many of the walks have already proved extremely popular, but if you want to browse the programme and check availability, the website is: www.talgarthwalkingfestival.org There is a positive emphasis on education in our area in the coming weeks and a couple of keynote events to mention. Firstly, on Friday 11th May, we have the official opening of our new area primary school,Ysgol y Mynydd Du, by Cabinet Secretary for Education, Kirsty Williams AM, with Cllr Rosemarie Harris, Leader of Powys County Council. There is an evident buzz amongst the pupils in their new learning environment, which is especially rewarding for those of us who have been involved over years in seeking to safeguard primary education in our community, rather than a larger 11–18 out of town

‘through school,’ which was a favoured proposal in some quarters. We are indebted to Dyfed Powys Roads Policing team, which has been committing additional resource to speed limit enforcement and will continue to do so, ahead of the toucan crossing that is to be installed at Hay Road in the coming weeks, to enhance pedestrian safety. Another important event on the wider educational theme takes place on the following day, Saturday 12th May, at Talgarth Town Hall from 10am. It is a public meeting to discuss the plans for Black Mountains College, which I have previously mentioned in this column. Kirsty Williams AM has kindly agreed to introduce the event and the project’s instigators, Ben Rawlence and Owen Sheers. The concept is for a rural skills/further education college, a teacher training facility and a small undergraduate college. The meeting is an important opportunity for members of our local community to ask questions and to bring their own perspective as the plans take shape. I hope to see you at some of these community events in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 4th May from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. No appointment is necessary, but advance notice is sometimes helpful, if the issues you wish to raise are complex. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue, which may be troubling you. Best wishes, William

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

I hope everyone in Brecon and Radnorshire had a fantastic Easter and fun filled bank holiday weekend. Throughout the year I always ensure that I meet with leaders in the field of tourism around Brecon and Radnorshire, including hoteliers, publicans and others. I am always mindful of how important the tourism industry is to our communities. We are attracting ever more people to the country and I believe we must ensure we create the most positive and welcoming environment for tourists. Sadly there are a few factors holding us back and I would like to see them resolved to ensure our tourism industry creates the maximum wealth possible, to employ local people and invest in our area. In the UK the standard rate of VAT is 20%, I and many of my colleagues in Westminster would like to see this reduced and in particular the tourism industry, who are hit hard by the high rate of VAT. In Westminster I will continue to lobby the treasury and other MPs in an attempt to get the support in place for a reduction in the VAT rate. In many parts of Europe their VAT rate is half of what it is in the UK and our tourism industry must be able to compete with our continental neighbours and not be at a disadvantage. On top of this, many within the leisure and tourism industry are extremely fearful of the Tourism Tax which is currently being proposed by the Welsh Government. The reasoning behind this tax is that the Welsh Government believe that they can spend money on tourism better than businesses and experts in the field. It’s just the sort of nanny state interference which will lead to prices rising and tourism declining across Wales. The Welsh Conservatives are utterly opposed to such a move and will fight Welsh Labour, the Welsh Liberal Democrats and Plaid Cymru who all support this. In an ideal world we would be seeing a reduction in VAT, the Tourism Tax plan scrapped and increased investment into our areas of tourism by the National Trust, National Parks and other organisations. This sort of combination would give the Tourism industry the breathing space it needs to restructure, reinvest and plan for when we leave the European Union in the next few years. I will do my upmost to work with all involved to ensure we have an even more thriving tourism industry here in Brecon and Radnorshire.

on the A438 Hereford to Brecon main road at Clyro

This April a new law went ‘live’ in Wales that I was privileged to play a part in creating and passing through the legislative process in the National Assembly. The Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act 2016 determines nursing levels in healthcare and hospital settings in Wales and it came in to force on Friday 6th April 2018. It was a special moment personally, as it was me who introduced the measure in the Welsh Assembly as a Private Member’s Bill in 2014, for it then to receive Royal Ascent in 2016. A culmination of months of work with a range of organisations and individuals, including the Royal College of Nursing, the British Medical Association and others, produced a Bill in the Assembly, which received cross-party support. It was a ground-breaking measure that places Wales at the very forefront of setting standards for nurse staffing levels and workloads, which is greatly to the benefit of patient care and safety. Along with our retention in Wales of nursing bursaries for trainee nurses, it will also help to improve nurse recruitment and retention. Not for the first time, Wales is setting the agenda in the field of improving public services. This achievement also shows that when politicians work across party lines to get things done the outcome is so often better than if matters are just pursued in a partisan way, something that, dare I say it, politicians at Westminster might like to consider. Another notable change which has just occurred, which will affect almost every family in one way or another, is the recent decision by the Welsh Government to raise the ‘threshold’ for the value of assets people can retain before they have to start paying for their residential or nursing home care. Now £40,000 in Wales, the threshold is at only £23,000 in England. This means that residential or nursing home care residents in Wales will be able to keep and pass on to their families more of their money and assets than before. It’s a far from perfect system and some people will still be left having to sell assets to pay for their care. But again this change places us in Wales ahead of other countries in our public policy development. We are trying to make Wales a fairer, more socially-just place and as a Welsh politician I am proud of that. I can be contacted any time at kirsty.williams@ assembly.wales or on 01874 625739

News from Black Mountains Lions Club Black Mountains Lions (BML) celebrated their 45th birthday in style on Saturday 17th March 2018. The BML Club was founded as part of Lions International in February 1973 and every year since has held a Charter anniversary to celebrate its birth. 2018 was no exception with Members and guests gathering at the Black Mountain Lodge in Glasbury for a dinner to celebrate, followed by a disco. Weekend snow was threatened but it didn’t stop BML Members and guests attending. President Jim Gamon welcomed special guest Josie Pearson MBE & Paralympian Gold Medalist, who after an introduction answered questions from the floor about her life and current work. Down in the memorial car park, the theme of Richard Booth’s 1977 rallying cry against meddlesome outside bureaucracy got an impromptu revival: when a Powys traffic warden slapped a fine on the visiting Dylan’s Mobile Bookstore, our mayor, Trudy Stedman intervened and the ticket was duly removed. One in the eye for Powys! Elsewhere, Bookstagrammers from as far afield as Vancouver descended on Hay for a second weekend of events curated by Anne Addyman of Addyman’s Books. She said: “The celebrations were made possible by all the various elements of Hay pulling together and pitching in, proof that – in these tough times – we need to be united.”

This year’s event consolidated 2017’s fledgling outing and organisers are already fielding queries about next year’s 42nd anniversary. “It feels like something that could go on and on. 2019 is definitely happening,” says event coordinator Joshua Green, conscious of the literary relevance of the number 42. Can we expect a Hitchhiker’s Guide theme for 2019? The short answer is yes, says Josh. “Douglas Adams’ work is going to be a huge inspiration, there’s so much scope in the books.” If you’ve found yourself pondering the meaning of life, the universe and everything, hold that thought – the answer’s coming on 1st April 2019. News from Hay & District Dial-a-Ride Volunteer Vacancies! We’ve just finalised our calendar of fundraising events for 2018, with some new and exciting functions including a fashion show in July at The Swan, and the Woo Town Hillbillies performing for us in October. and man our events are volunteers. Due to some retirements we are looking for new people to join our Friends of Dial-a-Ride – our team of fundraisers. It might be baking cakes, setting up for an event, selling raffle tickets – there are many ways in which our Friends lend a hand. The benefits are access to lovely social events, and the knowledge that your contribution is helping Hay’s community transport charity. We are also looking for volunteer drivers! If you would like to use your own car or drive our minibuses please get in touch. No experience is necessary and we will provide all the training you need. You must be between 25 and 70 to apply to drive our minibuses, and have D1 on your licence for the 13 seater. Our VW may be driven on a standard licence. You may not have more than 3 penalty points. All appointments are subject to enhanced DBS, references and other checks and a commitment to undertake all the training. There’s never been a better time to join our friendly and award winning team. Call us 01497 821616. Find us on Facebook.

News from Hay Town Council Mayor’s Review of the Year It is hard to believe that I am already in my last month as Mayor, this last year has really flown by. In May last year we had just 5 councillors in post. Following a request for residents to come forward we eventually got up to full strength. It has been both a frustrating and rewarding year. Hay Town Council met with the new Powys Cabinet in September last year and were informed that all agreements with the previous cabinet were now off the table and discussions around transfer of assets would be starting afresh. So, for the last 8 months we have spent considerable time and energy trying to meet and discuss a way forward. There has been some progress but at the time of writing everything is still up in the air. This is frustrating for us, as it limits our ability to plan and move forward. However, it hasn’t all been doom and gloom. Some very good work has been done by councillors and other organisations to progress actions in the Town Plan and there is a lot of ‘unseen’ work carried

out or organised by the various sub-committees such as maintenance and repair of buildings and management of council owned land. Additionally, we have seen the launch of the Miles without Stiles Project and Hay in Bloom as well as recognising our very first Hay Citizen of the Year. This was, for me, a great way to end my year. News from U3A Hay It’s Festival month so there is no U3A meeting in May while we concentrate on all things literary! So our next U3A Hay meeting will be on Tuesday 19th June starting at 10.30am, when Dr Donald Williams of the Myddfai Society will explain the history and the legends of this famous group of healers, The Physicians of Myddfai. We meet in the lovely Music Room at the Baskerville Hall Hotel in Clyro, with coffee from 10am. Hope to see you there! The entrance fee is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. For further information, phone Tricia Wordley on 01497 821595.
