Hello Welcome to our July issue of Wye Local. Earlier this year we started including a testimonial each month. I’m always really touched by what our advertisers say. I’m one proud lass of our wonderful team. Clare and Jess are often mentioned – they are the ones who deal directly with the customer, and it confirms they do a fab job. To help local businesses brings a good feeling. Page 2 has a few job adverts this month.Take a peek. New advertisers join us this month: Graham Goodrich Art, page 3. Some on our doorstep, some further afield. Book them into your diary! Also take a look at the What’s On section for even more events. Thinking of moving house? Perhaps you’re looking to buy? Take a look at our property feature starting on page 30. From estate agents to decoration, improvements and builders, there’s plenty here to help make your house a home. Next month we’ll run a Spotlight on Talgarth feature. So if you have a business or event in this area, get in touch with Clare. Local Talent: Graham Goodrich
Graham Goodrich has been an occasional artist since the mid-1970s, but since retirement and moving back to Wales two years ago he has devoted more time to painting. He is largely self taught, although he started at evening classes for Art ‘O’ Level and then ‘A’ Level in the 1970s. Type of artist: Watercolourist/collage. Range of products: Original watercolour collages of local communities, A3 Giclée fine art limited edition prints, mounted and wrapped (framed by arrangement). A4 Digiprints. Greetings cards. At the present time originals of Hay 1 and Hay 2 are available, as well as prints and cards of Hay, Crickhowell and Brecon. Price range: Originals from £850. A3 Giclée limited edition prints, mounted and wrapped £78.A4 Digiprints, mounted and wrapped £45. Cards from £2.50. Artist statement: I have had an interest in art all my life, but for many years family and a demanding job as a veterinary surgeon took over. It is only since retirement and moving back to live in Wales that I have really rekindled my passion and have developed an interest in painting local architecture in watercolour. I paint individual buildings and assemble them into a collage and aim to create a picture which encompasses the essence and feeling of a town or village. This is painstaking and detailed work which takes many hours. So far I have done two collages of Hay, one each of Brecon and Crickhowell (both of which have been sold) and am nearing completion of my latest work which is a commission of Llangors. At the present time my original collage of Hay-onWye 1 is hanging in my home in Llangors, and Hayon-Wye 2 is hanging in the Ardent Gallery, Brecon. A3 Giclée prints and A4 Digiprints are available from
Forge Framers and Gallery in Hay. Flow stocks Digiprints and cards, and cards are also available at Old Forest Arts, Bartrums and Hay Makers. What has been your proudest moment? My proudest moment was selling my first original picture (of Crickhowell) for what seemed, to me a substantial sum. It was so nice to know that someone was happy to part with money in order to hang my painting on their wall! What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? I don’t think I have (yet!) produced a masterpiece, but I was particularly pleased with my Crickhowell work. My plans are to continue my work as it is, though I imagine it will gradually evolve and develop in technique and subject matter. I plan to do pictures of Abergavenny and then maybe Crickhowell 2 and Brecon 2. From then on – who knows? I am always happy to receive suggestions. What advice would you give a local artist? I would not presume to advise a local artist, other than just do what you enjoy and follow your heart. Which other local artists do you admire? Being a relative newcomer to the area I have not yet got to know many artists’ work, but I do particularly admire the work of Rhian Symes from Brecon who does amazingly detailed paintings of wildlife. I also like the ceramic figures made by Patricia Kelly.

BUSINESS PROFILE
The Mill Restaurant at Poston Mill
Daniel & Ffion Williams took on The Mill Bar & Restaurant in March 2018 and hope to continue running it for many years to come. Hoping to attract more people to The Mill for food and drink, they recently held a Gin Garden Party with a hog roast and 16 different gins.Their next big event will be the August Bank Holiday, with a live band, local drinks and – weather permitting – a BBQ. What made you set up the business? We saw the potential of The Mill as a destination point for the surrounding area, with our great Beer Garden, Restaurant and Function room. Where are you based? We are originally from Harlech, North Wales, where we ran a successful hotel restaurant. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? We are hoping to attract more and more people with events and great food. Our recent Gin Garden Party was a great success, the pork baps and a selection of 16 gins, 4 flavoured vodkas and 5 tonics were very well received. How many staff do you employ? At present we employ four staff, my brother Dominic who moved down with us, our close friend Kevin who works in the kitchen with myself and he also bakes fantastic bread, and two local people, Holly and Quin, both work front of house. Have you won any awards in your business? As yet we have not but we are hopeful! Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualification up to date? Food training is always a must – keeping up to date with new regulations that come into effect. Ffion and I have
both recently refreshed our chef qualifications. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? Work hard while you can – it’s a long winter, and put the hours in now so you can retire early. What is your ideal job/client? We love friendly happy people, people we can consider friends by the time they leave, not just customers. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Nothing great to mention here yet as it’s still early days but we did receive an average rating of 5 at our last restaurant via Trip Advisor. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? Word of mouth, people having a great time, telling others and then hopefully they come and have a great time and tell even more people! List one thing you wish you could change about your business: Nothing as yet, get back to me in a year. So far we are loving all of it. List five goals on your business to-do list: Draw more people from the local area, become a destination pub for some and a great local for others, wow people with a great Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? We knew Dom was a great front of house person and Kev was a great baker but didn’t realise how good they both were. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? Every night working is a great laugh. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? We are open 7 days a week, and serve breakfast every day from 8.30am (9.30am on Sundays). What have you done today to make you feel proud? Just finished making a lovely sauce for the butter chicken tonight. What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? How rubbish the mobile phone signal is and how bad the roads are! Sum your business up in five words: Growing, Baking, Laughing, Eating, Relaxed.

REVIEW
“A lovely treat!”
Carrot & Wine Stores, situated on the main road through Whitney-on-Wye was a lovely treat for an afternoon visit and lunch. It is one of the newest of three such stores, the others located at Wormelow and Wellington (they must like W’s!). The building is lovely, a welcoming, inspiring old barn with a beautiful rustic theme. Lisa Marie and I made our way inside, first walking through the store, which offers local organic produce, daily essentials and much more, then making our way to The Cow Shed Café, which is situated at the far end.Very much looking forward to our lunch! We were delighted to learn from Mark, the owner, that everything is fresh and homemade, using organic and local produce. All meat is sourced from Neil Powell.Tom, the chef, cooks in an open kitchen, where you can see him working. It is here where he also makes all the cakes, sausage rolls, pasties, scotch eggs, samosas, onion bhajis and pies for all three stores. We ordered our drinks at the counter, where we met two very pleasant and helpful members of staff. With a wide selection of cold drinks, it was tricky to choose! Lisa Marie chose an Elderflower Lemonade, I decided on a bottled fruit smoothie. The Cow Shed Café is a quaint but light and open area. You can settle on the comfy sofas to eat your lunch or have a coffee, or sit at a table. As we were lucky with the sunshine, we were grateful that there was outside patio seating available, and we opted for a table in the sun. Being in such a beautiful area, why not enjoy it! A nice simple menu, with some delicious options. We both agreed that the menu was our cup of tea for a lunchtime meal; light, fresh, and delicious. Lisa Marie chose the quiche of the day, which was served with a fresh salad. I went for the roast beef and horseradish sandwich on a tasty fresh homemade white loaf, served on a plate with crisps and a fresh salad. Both of us agreed that our meals were extremely tasty, and generous portions! We had spotted the freshly baked cakes at the counter on our arrival… and there is always room for pudding, so of course we had to sample these! Lisa Marie had the chocolate brownie; I opted for a very large slice of the coffee and walnut cake. I was told this had just left the oven which helped my decision, and wow,Tom can BAKE! We finished our meal with some lovely coffee; latte for
Lisa Marie, cappuccino for me. An excellent lunch! The Cow Shed Café is open for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. I would love to try an afternoon tea here, the peaceful and relaxed setting is idyllic. What makes this place special is that it’s not just a shop, it’s not just a café, it’s a real destination. It has the fantastic “The Makers’ Mezzanine” Artisan gift shop, gallery and workshops upstairs. The mezzanine is gorgeous, overlooking the store and cafe below. Up here, Lisa Marie and I admired the locally made art on display. We were both impressed with the gift ideas and the variety of local artists, with prices to suit all budgets. Carrot & Wine Stores really is a lovely place to browse if you wanted something a bit more than just a quick lunch. There is also exhibition space in the store, with a rotation of local artists displaying their work. A great opportunity for their pieces to be seen. With future plans for the remaining rooms, extension of the mezzanine, various workshops and the possibility of evening events, I am excited to see what more this barn will have to offer. Our afternoon was lovely. The atmosphere the team at Carrot & Wine Stores have created, along with the fantastic food, artistic treats and treasures, will make you want to return. Thank you for having us, we will be back soon! Saturday: Carrot & Wine Stores isis open open Monday 7 days ato week from 8am 9am - 6pm. 5.30pm and Sunday: 10am - 5pm. that often, like here, are further divided. The degree of division can even go on to a further stage or two. There is only one native fern that does not have leaves divided in this way – the Hart’s-tongue Fern which is common in our woodlands. Lemon-scented fern is unmistakeable when seen as photographed, looking at the spore producing “blobs” on the back of the frond. In this fern they hug the edge of the leaflet (or pinnule). And there is the lemon(ish) smell if you brush your hand along the frond.
Oreopteris limbosperma Lemon-scented Fern It isn’t generally realised how many different ferns we have growing in the Black Mountains, Beacons, and around. This one might easily be confused with the common “Male Fern” which isn’t even our most common fern. The picture shows a feature common to many, but not all, ferns in that the leaves or fronds are divided into leaflets
This fern prefers damp peaty locations with plenty of water flowing through the site. Just the sort of environment we found it in - a gully near the Gospel Pass - last month. Brecknock’s most common fern? Possibly, after Bracken, the Soft-shield fern that is abundant in so many shady woodland paths. John Crellin

Carb Crackers (Part 2) By the time this comes to print it’ll be 6 weeks or so since the programme, but did any of you see ‘The Truth About Carbs’ (6.6.18 BBC1)? Finally a programme that was interesting, informative and accurate on the subject of nutrition. It started by stating exactly what I said last month: Going without carbs can make some people miserable with no energy – yet others are fine – which is why it is NEVER a good idea to advocate a one size fits all approach to diet and nutrition. However: generally the UK/USA we’re WAY overdoing it! But also: not all carbs are the same as this programme demonstrated really well. So learning to eat carbs with a little background education has to be a good thing surely, (and why I always felt knowledge really IS power, just being told what to do will not serve you). Making the right decisions day in day out; knowing what will satiate you, avoiding those that will lead to our piling on body fat, even affect our fertility and raise our risk of T2 diabetes, (reversed in an experiment in the programme – but this is nothing
new to those of us immersed this subject).. can only come if you know what to do! So where are you on this tolerance spectrum? Most people have an enzyme within their saliva called amylase, which has the ability to cut apart big and bulky starch molecules into simpler sugars, available for energy. Some have 50 x more than others! Some have none at all. Here’s an easy test you can do: The Cracker Test (it’s been around for some time): You need a pen and timer. Here goes: Chew on a plain, unsalted cracker (or a slice of peeled plain potato), until it changes from bland to quite sweet. If the taste changes in less than 14 seconds you are able to process carbs effectively and you can eat up to 250g per day. 15–30 seconds makes you moderate – you can go to 175g per day. 30 seconds or more you’d be best on a low carb protocol (you’ll probably already know you are not a carb king or queen!). And look up ‘Resistant Starch Foods’. This will be huge soon! Article supplied by Cat Wyllie-Fox, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

A WWI Commemoration To mark the centenary of the end of WWI, a weekend of commemoration is to take place in Hay on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th August. The culmination of a series of commemorations that have taken place since 2014 and organised by the Royal British Legion, the town will welcome living history groups, who will camp throughout the town, providing opportunities on the Saturday for the public to learn how their ancestors worked and lived on the Front during the War. At 2pm the Surrey Police Band and soloist Emma Brown will perform a concert in the grounds of Cartref Care Home. On Sunday 5th August the weekend will end with a parade and service, the purpose of which is to remember the men of Hay and the surrounding area who made the ultimate sacrifice. As well as Hay Town Council, invitations to take part have been sent to the community and parish councils of the villages from Bronllys and Talgarth to Eardisley and Peterchurch. The ever-popular Swansea City Pipe Band will be welcomed once more to lead the
Parade, which steps off from the town car park at 12.10pm, and the Surrey Police Band will head up a concert on the memorial square that also includes Emma Brown, the Talgarth Male Choir,Wern Fach Choir and Rhayader Voices in Unity. A highlight of the concert will be the performance of ‘Home at Last’, composed especially for this event by local musician John Rees and arranged by the Musical Director of the Surrey Police Band, Graham Atterbury. The service, at 2pm, will be led by a military padre and in addition to the traditional Last Post followed by a silence, wreaths will be laid by the Lord Lieutenant of Powys The Hon. Dame Shan LeggeBourke DCVO, MP Chris Davies and Kirsty Williams AM. Members of the public will be invited to lay 100 red roses in memory of The Fallen. Association and RBL Standards are invited to take part in this event and should contact the RBL organiser, Kelvyn Jenkins, on 07527 696968 for more details.

Hay Jazz Hay Jazz is the name of a community interest organisation presenting high-class Saturday-night cabarets at St Mary’s Church in Hay. Its mission is twofold: to help build St Mary’s reputation as a centre of musical excellence and to offer the cream of the classic-jazz world the chance to showcase their extraordinary talent in a cabaret environment. With the emphasis on quality and respect for the venue, each act is handpicked not just for their virtuosity and love of melody, but also for their ability to entertain. In the next concert, on Saturday 21st July, the popular married duo Janice Day & Martin Litton will celebrate the Swing Era with songs written or first recorded in 1939. They are hoping to persuade the largely classical audience in and around Hay that not all jazz is sad, mad or bad! See the Hay Jazz ad (left) for details and how to buy tickets.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth In recent weeks, communities across the UK have marked the first anniversaries of the terrorist outrages of Manchester Arena, London Bridge and Borough Market, which saw many acts of bravery, in the face of cold blooded murder and violence. We will never forget that the latter atrocity was followed by the devastation of the Grenfell Tower fire in North Kensington, only minutes away from our partner community in Talgarth Road, Hammersmith. Just yesterday at noon, I joined many thousands of people across Wales and further afield in keeping a minute’s silence, recalling those who perished, and, of course, those who live on, with their terrible memories of that fateful night. At such times, we are made especially aware of the importance of community solidarity and of the role of volunteering in our society. In this connection, it was my privilege to attend PAVO’s Powys Volunteer of the Year Awards, which took place on Wednesday 6th June at The Strand Hall, Builth Wells, in the presence of Dame Shan Legge-Bourke, Lord Lieutenant of Powys. The evening, which took place in National Volunteers’ Week, was a rich celebration of volunteering in all its forms, individual and collective, throughout our county, including several nominations from our locality. I was delighted to see Hay Brecon Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees (HBTS4R) receive the Group Volunteering Award. Their role in coordinating support and promoting basic decency and kindness towards the refugee community in Wales in the last few years has been very heartening, at a time when the news has been so dominated by darker events and a distinct lack of charity and humanitarian spirit. HBTS4R meets every month in Talgarth, courtesy of Gwernyfed RFC, to plan their forthcoming programme of events and visits, which makes the accolade they have received all the more special for our community.
Talgarth Luncheon Club, one of the longest standing volunteer groups in our area, and winner of the overall PAVO Volunteer of the Year Award in 2014, will shortly be taking a break for the summer and their final session falls on Tuesday 3rd July. It promises to be particularly special, as the pupils of Ysgol y Mynydd Du will be singing for the senior guests and volunteers after their meal and ahead of the traditional summer raffle. This intergenerational activity is a special dimension of volunteering, and promises to be enriching for young and old alike. Congratulations are also in order for local student Amy Argent, who serves as Youth Councillor on Talgarth Town Council, as well as having experience of community volunteering, ranging from Young Carers to Dyfed Powys Police Cadets. Amy has recently been appointed to the Young People’s Advisory Panel of the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, Sally Holland, after a competitive application process. Amy is a committed and highly articulate advocate for young people’s issues and I have every confidence that she will make a strong contribution to the Panel, just as she does to Talgarth Town Council. I look forward to seeing many of you at local events in the coming weeks, including Talgarth Sports on Friday 27th and Saturday 28th July. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, if you have any issues of concern, by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook or Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery will take place from 5pm on Friday 6th July at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. In any event, I look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes, William

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Eighteen months ago I wrote in the Brecon and Radnor Express endorsing the Government’s plans for a third runway at Heathrow Airport. I am pleased to say that the Cabinet has now committed to the expansion of Heathrow and this will go to a vote in the coming weeks. When I wrote about this issue eighteen months ago, I pointed out that currently Britain is in drastic need of extra air capacity in the South East of England. With Heathrow operating at 98 per cent of capacity for more than a decade, while Gatwick is also approaching its limits. In recent years Heathrow has been overtaken by Dubai International as the world’s busiest airport. A third runway could increase capacity from 480,000 to 740,000 flights a year. I do understand some people have concerns about Heathrow expansion. The fact that some people’s homes may be demolished in order to build the runway is very sad indeed. I have been reassured that the Government have evaluated all other options and Heathrow expansion is the most economically favourable option to fix our air capacity problem. However, we must look at the positives, Heathrow Expansion will send a message to the world. This is extremely important as many are trying to talk this nation down post-Brexit and we need to make sure that we send the right global message. That Britain is open for business. Our economy here in Wales has lagged behind other parts of the UK and external investment is one of the ways in which we can really benefit. Projects such as Heathrow give us the opportunity to hugely benefit the trade, tourism and business that comes with airport expansion. The more business and tourism we can attract through expanding Heathrow, the more business and tourism we can attract to Wales, which brings investment and jobs to our economy.

Newss from
Kirsty Williams
Sometimes local councils come up with ideas that might look reasonable on paper but are unreasonable when looked at more closely. Such is the proposal in Powys County Council’s current public consultation on introducing parking charges for disabled drivers (‘Blue Badge’ holders). In my view this idea is unfair and panders to the perception that many Blue Badge holders are not disabled and don’t need free parking in disabled bays. In fact the vast majority of blue badge holders are genuinely disabled and do need this extra support. Disabled people face enough barriers without the council making things more difficult; and anyway the council has not thought through all the practical implications – for example the need to make the ticket machines easier for people in wheelchairs and with impaired mobility to use, and located in places nearer the disabled parking bays.. Oh, and how this change would cause more disabled drivers to park on-street or to simply take their valued business out of county to the big shopping centres where disabled parking is more available and still free. These reasons and more are why I and my colleagues on the county council are resolutely opposed to the whole idea. Apart from our opposition in principle, we also think that the council’s highly questionable claim that the change could raise £100,000 per year does not justify doing it. The consultation ends on Friday 2nd July and the survey is available here:- www.powys.gov.uk/ haveyoursay and from the council’s offices and libraries or my constituency office in Brecon. Other current areas of concern to me as your local AM are the council Cabinet’s continuing underfunding of our local schools and the further cuts it is making to the Youth Service. The council’s Cabinet and its ruling groups outvoted my Welsh Liberal Democrat council colleagues’ proposal to put an extra £1 million in to our schools in this year’s council budget, despite the fact that all of Powys’s 12 secondary schools are in a worsening budget position and 9 are already in deficit. I very much hope the council’s current Independent/ Conservative Cabinet will quickly change its current strategy before the prospects for our youngsters become even more difficult. Please contact me anytime on 01874 625739 or at kirsty.williams@assembly.wales.

News from... News from Black Mountains Lions Club Car Parking at Hay Festival Our intrepid car parkers were at it again this year. Photo below, from left to right: Glen, Andy David, John and Andy. They were part of a whole team parking cars at PCI during both weekends of the Hay Festival. The weather was mostly fine – even very warm and sunny with festival-goers in merry mood. Our huge thanks go to PCI Pharma Services for allowing us once again to use their car park for raising our funds. We raised £7,159 over the two weekends and every penny of the money will go to help local people and causes, with some going to the Lions nationally and internationally. Black Mountains Lions Club is part of Lions International, which was founded in America in 1917, initially to help the blind and visually impaired. By 1920 it had become international with growth accelerated with new clubs in Canada, Europe, Asia and Africa. Today Lions Clubs International extends our mission of service every day – in all corners of the globe. The needs are great and our services broad, including sight, health, youth, elderly, the environment and disaster relief. Our network has grown to include over 200 countries and geographic areas. Anyone can join in and help. Want to know more about the work we do in your community? Please contact David on 0845 833 7403 or email Cheryl on cherylhyde@btinternet.com.
News from Drover Cycles Cycle to Work and save! It’s almost two decades since the UK government introduced the Cycle to Work scheme. The aim was – and remains – to promote healthier journeys to work and to reduce environmental pollution. It’s been a great success but how does it work? As an employee you loan a bike (and related safety equipment) from your employer. You can spend up to £1,000 which you pay back at an agreed monthly rate. There’s no interest to pay and in fact the payment comes out of your wages before tax so there are extra savings to be made. The system is referred to as a salary sacrifice scheme and at the end of the agreed period your employer can transfer ownership of the bike to you. There’s no need to sign up to one of the branded schemes (e.g. Cycle Scheme, Bike2Work, etc), just ask your employer to contact your local bike shop, Drover Cycles, and they can run through how to put the scheme in place. Self-employed and planning to use a bike for work purposes? Why not buy a bike and reclaim the VAT.You’ll get the same benefits as an employed person when it comes to regularly riding your bike – namely a lower fuel bill and a great boost to your fitness, health and wellbeing! News from Glasbury Get Together Club On Friday 11th May, a small number of members and guests went to the Malvern RHS Spring Show. It really is a massive show on a very large site, with something for everyone on display. The show gardens were spectacular, even featuring a knitted garden, fund raising for The Sue Ryder Foundation, and a garden inside a giant egg which opened and closed. Every sort of food was available on numerous stalls, together with clothing, garden tools, greenhouses, garden furniture, antiques etc. Everyone returned to the coach tired but happy. Thank you to Barbara Brown who introduced the work of the local Gilfach Radnorshire Wild Life Trust at our May club meeting. The 411 acre nature reserve which has nature trails for you to visit and a huge variety of species and habitats, and of course, wonderful scenery. Our next club meeting is on Wednesday 4th July at Geraldine Cleary’s garden in Glasbury for a Treasure Hunt with a twist and prizes. Strawberry Cream Tea. A fun afternoon. Come and join us. Results from our Plant Sale: £417.70 before expenses.

Many thanks to all who helped, donated plants and supported us on the day. Please ring for info: Gloria on 01497 847 726 or Judith on 01497 847 274. News from Gwernyfed High School GCSEs – Pointers for the Perplexed by Eva Lantos – Year 12 We all know GCSEs have garnered themselves a bit of a reputation for being…not fun. I remember listening with wide eyes and barely contained horror to the older years as they told me they would be the hardest thing I would ever do. But to all the new Year 10s and 11s who are currently preparing for the apparent hell they have been told they are about to endure, let me tell you: it’s really not that bad! Looking back, I can now confidently say that the last two years of high school were by far the best. So, although you should work hard and make sure you are always pushing yourself, remember to have fun and enjoy the memories you are making with your friends. Perhaps the most important aspect of surviving GCSEs is organisation, and I cannot stress this enough! It might seem boring, but whether you are just beginning the course or preparing for an exam, make notes as you go. You really don’t want to have to cram a year’s worth of work into a week’s worth of rushed notes, and if you do it as you go along, you learn what might need a little more revision or practice. Trust me on this one, there is no better feeling than being prepared and on top of all your work, and being able to spend your evening watching Netflix while your friends are stressing and struggling to do all the work you did two weeks ago. Always ask questions if you don’t understand something or feel like you need to know more. I was always too shy, and I regretted not putting my hand up so much. I didn’t want to seem stupid. But sitting in an exam hall and not being able to answer a question because I’d been too scared to admit I didn’t understand a concept is when I felt really stupid. Remember, teachers want to help you do your best, and will be more than happy to explain. It could be the difference of a whole grade! Finally, take time to relax and look after yourself. Self-care and looking after your mind is just as, if not more important, than the work you do. Don’t feel guilty if you ned to take an evening off to binge-watch
Friends and talk to your friends if you’re feeling down or stressed – they’re going through it too! There are some really great apps that help you deal with stress, and Samaritans.org is an organisation that you can call or text for free at any time of the day to rant or get things off your chest! You don’t realise how much fun Year 11 is until it’s over, so try your hardest but remember to appreciate everything going on around you.
News from Hay Castle Trust Apprenticeships at Hay Castle A construction apprenticeship can be the start of a lifelong career, and Hay Castle and John Weaver Conservation are teaming up to offer two apprenticeships at Hay Castle. A traditional apprenticeship combines learning at a college or training provider with on-site experience to give apprentices the right mix of technical and practical skills. When completed, apprentices receive an NVQ or SVQ qualification which can be used to qualify for an industry card scheme. John Weaver Construction has had an established apprenticeship programme for over 20 years. Managing Director Terry Edwards says “Conservation is an important part of our business, working on Grade 1 & 2 listed buildings, and we have ensured our apprentices have worked on these projects to gain essential experience in traditional skills. The apprentices gain experience hard to find nowadays and invest in our company when they continue as tradesmen with us. We are delighted we can mentor and train apprentices at Hay Castle.” To find out more and to apply for an apprenticeship, contact Nathan Goss, Conservation Contract Manager at nathan.goss@johnweaver.co.uk. News from Hay Cat Rescue Rosie & Poppy, both 4, and two little kittens are in need of loving homes. They have been given a clean bill of health by Hay Vets, are neutered, micro chipped and vaccinated. For more information please call Kathie 01497 821 401. www.haycatrescue.co.uk News from Hay Chamber of Commerce After the excitement of Festival season in Hay, the Chamber is now planning its activities for the rest of the year. We have a range of projects which we hope will help all businesses in Hay, whether you’re a member or not. One project we’ve been working on for as long as I’ve been involved in the Chamber is a comprehensive list of businesses in the area. It’s something we’ve been asked for numerous times in the past, and I’m pleased to say we are close to launching a new directory which will live on the Chamber website, allowing all businesses in the area to list themselves free of
charge. This ties in with work being carried out by Cllr Josie Pearson around accessibility in the town, and we are looking forward to working with Josie to map out just how easy it is for people to get around our beautiful town. As you will no doubt have heard by now, the Barclays branch in Hay is sadly closing. We would like to put on record our thanks to Helen and the rest of the team for the support they have given businesses in Hay over the years – they will be greatly missed. Could, or should, informal learning be used in the classroom? At our next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 17th July at 10.30am, Professor Lucy Green of the Institute of Education, University College London, will explain her wide research and findings which could revolutionise music education in her presentation “Popular Musicians’ Learning Practices: What Are Their Implications for Music Education?” After lunch, our afternoon session will begin at 1.15pm when Janet Robinson will describe how women’s roles have influenced social change in the 20th Century, from her new book “Family Matters: Four generations of change through two World Wars”. The day is open to everyone, at £5 for members and £7 for visitors. Please do come and join us at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. Reflections on the Festival By a visitor to The HayDay CafĂŠ A tented festival on the edge of Hay For the turbulent crowds pushing along the way provides a feast of good literature and food to assuage and whet appetite, whatever the mood. A bonanza for traders throughout the town, their challenging customers wearing them down. One would hardly believe the things that they buy but not for the traders to speculate why.
Wye Local would like to thank the volunteers at The HayDay CafĂŠ for everything they do to help people living with dementia throughout the year.

50 JET JACUZZI The opening of Caffi Croeso (the first pop-up dementia-friendly cafe in Crickhowell) on Tuesday 17th April at Crickhowell Parish Hall was a great success. Elvis (Darren Graceland Jones) went down a storm with the guests. Cakes were supplied by O’Donnell Bake House and The Pantry Coffee House. Bingo was a hit and the prizes were great. Enough tickets for a year were supplied by Dai Man U, and Paul from Bacchus Off-licence was the entertaining bingo caller.

On Tuesday 15th May the second event took place at Caffi Croeso. Another fantastic success. Sally Rees (guitarist) and Susan Mary Walters (keyboard player) put on a fantastic afternoon, with the theme being the Royal Wedding. Cakes were donated by O’Donnell Bake House and Clam’s Cakes. Dilwyn Williams, the bingo caller, did a splendid job. The Living with Dementia Society, in association with the Beaufort Male Voice Choir, are putting on a charity concert at the Clarence Hall, Crickhowell on Saturday 21st July at 7pm to raise money to continue funding Caffi Croeso as well as other dementia-related causes. Beautiful unusual gifts and treasures naturally found or inspirationally created. Birthstone for July Aluminum oxide, referred to as Ruby: this is associated with all other corundams known as Sapphires. When containing bundles of tube like inclusions, it gives a star or a catseye effect. In India, in healing traditions, Ruby is known as the stone of the sun. Apart from being a valuable gemstone Ruby is used as an abrasive as it has a hardness of 9.
Fossils of the month Stromatolites are multi-layered formations called Algea mats which like plants photosynthesise their food. These stomatalites date back 3.5 billion years and are found in precambrian carbonate rock and are still being formed at Sharks Bay in Australia. “Come & see us for a warm and friendly welcome. New acquisitions This month we have been fortunate enough to obtain several bronze singing bowls, made in India during the early to mid C20th. They have been selected for their exceptional tone and vibrational qualities. We also have a variety of wands to choose from. Singing bowls originated in China BC and are used in meditation and awareness disciplines. Pitch and resonance varies according to the metals used, the size of both the bowl and the wand and the design.
