Welcome to our August issue of Wye Local. What a productive year we’re having – we’ve been working behind the scenes on two new ventures. July saw the launch of a new monthly magazine, Local Ludlow. If you have any ties to this area, any friends or family with businesses there, any ideas about this new magazine – be sure to get in touch. Feedback from the local community of Ludlow on the first issue has been good. Also in July we went live with our brand new website – check out www.cariadslocal.co.uk. We’re thrilled. It’s clean, it’s fresh and it’s a great platform to share all our magazines online. Be sure to tell past residents to our area that they can keep up to date from wherever they are in the world. You can even purchase one of our 2019 Local Landscapes Calendars via the website. Welcome aboard to a few new businesses. LJP Plumbing, page 9. Black Mountains Gliding, page 28. Touchdown Design, page 34. Please show your support and be sure to tell them where you saw their advert. It ensures they continue to advertise. It’s August – the children are into the summer holidays. If you’re looking for ideas and inspiration don’t forget to check out our Cariads Family Magazine. The online version is on our website. A paper copy will have come home in your child’s school bag.The What’s On section is especially large this summer with a whopping 12 pages. Some parents tell me it’s their bible! Our feature this month is Spotlight on Talgarth, starting on page 26. Last month I was very lucky to have the perfect lunch date there... Don’t forget to support as many local shows and events as possible this summer. We go to print as the sun shines. Let’s hope this continues, with a little rain to keep the crops happy. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Lisa Marie and Otis at The Bakers’ Table, Talgarth.

NEW SCHOOL!
Hay-on-Wye CP School Number of pupils? 156. How many classrooms? In Hay School we have seven classrooms and two pre-school classrooms. Opening date of the new school? Our school opened on 19th February 2018 for the pupils. We had our official opening ceremony on 30th April, when lots of important people joined us to celebrate our fantastic new school. List some of the things that make the new school better than the old one: 1. It is a nice, fresh, clean building with no ivy growing through the walls. 2. Up to date and modern technology that works e.g. clever touch screens. 3. Having a large ‘Street’ where everyone can work together and share their learning. 4. We love having larger classrooms that are bright and colourful and the same size throughout the school. Do you miss anything about the old school? 1. The log circle on the grass area. 2. The large sand pit. 3. The wooden gazebo (but this will be put back on our playground when the grass is ready!) What after school clubs are currently available? At the moment we have four clubs running after school and two clubs running during lunchtimes. After school we are able to attend cricket, choir, fitness and cooking. During lunchtimes we are able to attend Welsh Club and Coding Club (Years 5 and 6 only). Once a month the children in Years 5 and 6 can choose to be part of Watch Club. This is run by a member of Brecknock Wildlife Society. Does the site offer any other clubs? Yes, our school has a daily breakfast club which begins at 7.50am and we also have an after school club called Jumping Jacks. Any future plans for the school or grounds? At the moment our grass areas are still being developed as the grass has not yet grown. Once the grass is ready the school council will help chose different play equipment to be placed onto the grass.
Goodbye old school, hello new school By Eve, Bill, Izzy and Alfie, Year 6 Goodbye to fly covered ivy in every corner of the hall. Hello to clean, bright windows, flooding in the light of a bright future. Goodbye to scruffy, dirty furniture, you really won’t be missed. Hello, new, untarnished tables and chairs. Goodbye to soggy runs to assembly in torrential rain. Hello to all classes being united under one roof. Goodbye to the parcel tape keeping the carpets together. Hello to clean, new floors and no shoes inside. Goodbye to faulty toilets and leaky taps. Hello to organised cloakrooms and electric hand-dryers. Goodbye to the sliding yellow doors; you really were an eyesore! Hello to spacious classrooms and a huge street for everyone’s use. Goodbye to old memories. Hello to the opportunity to make new ones.
‘‘
We are so happy to be finally in the new building and we all have smiles on our faces every day! Learning is more fun and we are really proud of our school community. Please watch our video (‘Behind the scenes at Hay School moving week’) to see how happy we all are! Mrs A Bartholomew, Head

NEW SCHOOL!
Clyro CIW Primary School Number of pupils? Currently 86, but rising! How many classrooms? We have four beautiful new classrooms and also a lovely large Nursery Classroom for 2 and 3-year-old provision, run by ‘Little Stars Clyro’. Opening date of new school? We moved in on Monday 11th June 2018. List five things that make the new school better than the old one? We love it all! 1. We have ‘The Street’, which is spacious with different areas in it, like a library and water fountains, our sky lanterns have our logo and motto painted on them which represents what our school is about, basically it’s got everything we need! 2. We have a lovely new library, which is peaceful with comfy seating, children’s drawings on the end of the bookcases, new books – every type of book that you need with nice things to sit on when you’re reading like toadstools, log cushions, hay and grass bale cushions and even a tractor!
3. We have a wooden ‘Tuck Shop’ in The Street, which is actually like a real shop! We don’t need to set it up every time now, it’s permanent. 4. We have lockers, which means we have tidier cloakrooms, we can fit more stuff in them, everything’s in one place and nothing falls off pegs! 5. We have a big hall where we can do PE and more fun games and there’s lots of storage cupboards so we don’t have to look at everything. We can do our school productions in the hall now rather than walking to the village hall. It’s spacious at lunchtimes and we have new benches to sit on when we’re having lunch. Do you miss anything about the old school? We had a willow sculpture outside at our old school but our
grounds haven’t been developed yet. Our old school wasn’t a similar layout to all of the other schools. What after school clubs are currently available? Apart from ‘Bees Knees’, our After School Club, we have free extra-curricular clubs run by staff after school. This term we’ve had ICT Club, Summer Sports Club, Welsh Club, Multi-Skills, Choir and Eco Club. Does the site offer any other clubs? We have a Breakfast Club that runs 8am–9am and ‘Bees Knees’ After School Club, which operates every night after school until 5.30pm. ‘Little Stars Clyro’ is our private on-site nursery and they take children from 2 years upwards. They are running a Summer Holiday Club this year from our school hall. Any future plans for the school or grounds? We are very lucky to have Tom’s Pirate Playground, which we all love and use at playtimes. We’ve already surveyed the whole school’s views and have a wish list, ready with ideas for our school grounds. Our field has been sown with grass seed but we have plans for raised beds for Gardening Club as well as exciting equipment ideas. School Council members: Callum Corrick, Chloe Jones, Grace Prendergast, Lydia Glasspool, Esme Williams-Sweet, Imogen Lucas, Ben Tilling-Ives, Eden Brown, Dylan Gough, Bobby Davies, Poppy Brown, Mo Sheppard, Fleur Jones, Lizzie Williams and Jack Abberley.
‘‘
We have the most beautiful, amazing school. We love it, we couldn’t ask for anything more. We’re all extremely proud, thank you so much. What an amazing learning environment for our children to work in, it’s truly extraordinary! Mrs Sarah Groves, Head

Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in August
one that can be found in a lake or far from its shore. This family has a reputation for a bitter taste, but Redshank only mildly so. Water-pepper, however lives up to its name and the very bitter taste builds up for some time after a tentative taste (which is the way some of us distinguish it from “Tasteless Waterpepper”). Needless to say, going around tasting wildgrowing plants you are unsure of is unwise.
Persicaria maculosa Redshank These flowers are normally an indicator of wet ground but, after the dry spell we are having as I write, that may be just part of the history of a particular plant. There are several relatives – one a completely amphibious
This particular member of the family is also known as Sourock, Red Knees and Red Legs. The “red” names refer to the red lower stems of the plant. The leaves usually have dark spots which were said in folklore to be due to being pinched by the devil, rendering the plant “Useless” which used to be a common name for it in Somerset and Wiltshire. This implied that Water-pepper was not useless, being used in the past for sores and swellings – even toothache (maybe the awful taste made you forget about the toothache). John Crellin

Are you insane? Multiplane! When a new client joins the club we’ll show them 12 cardio machines on their first session, and then start with a simple but effective weights programme on their second. We also teach progression. A client can ask for further instruction and new ideas at any time. But I also PRAY they’ll also start to explore the many classes. Why? All but one machine moves you in the Sagittal (forward) plane. The exception is the ski simulator, which moves you in the frontal plane – lateral). With weights and the Bowflex (cabled multi gym), we can be far more creative, moving you against resistance. All good. After Inductions, what often happens is a client will either be confident to continue on their own as they’re gym savvy (some want NO Induction) – OR anxious about attending classes as they feel everyone else will be fitter than them! Either way what can happen with no intervention – is they might start to create imbalances. I see this scenario frequently: a client, if left to their own devices, may (say), run for a while, then work their abs every day, thinking they’ll end up with; ‘good cardio output’ and ‘wash board tum’.They crunch, pike and leg
raise, and on a good day might perform planks (again – all in the sagittal plane). HUGE gaps in major muscle groups might be omitted. In addition – running on the treadmill will actually weaken glutes as the belt is taking the hip into extension FOR them. Their lumbar (lower backs) – the opposing muscle – might never get a look in.The oblique’s (sides) are neglected (lack of rotational or transverse plane movement). Eventually – this can lead to injury and pain. Only today I met a visitor who had serious shin splints in the past so now never does any impact work. I explained to him his amazing calf muscles were (historically), getting all the action but the tibial (shin) muscles NOTHING! (so I gave him an exercise to strengthen these – walking barefoot on his heels!).We all need MULTI DIRECTIONAL movement, MULTI DIRECTIONAL STABILITY, and less OVERKILL (Abs every day? Work elsewhere!). In the classes however the magic happens: We work in EVERY plane. We work with the entire body. You are motivated! Try it! Working for a plastic-free Hay Plasticfreehay is a newly formed group for people in and around Hay who are concerned enough about the harm being caused all over the world by our profligate use of unnecessary plastic. We are not against ALL plastic, which has been a wonderful invention to better our lives – just look at its use in our health service! No, it is unnecessary and singleuse plastic that we have in our sights. Put on your (metaphorical!) ‘plastic’ glasses and look at everything in our everyday lives. How much plastic do you see? How much of it do you need? Do you even want the inconvenience of disposing of unnecessary, non-recyclable plastic wrapping on everything from cabbages to coconuts?
even before you see the pictures of plastic in rivers, littering beaches, killing fish, whales and sea birds, and of the huge plastic ‘island’ in the Pacific Ocean. Remember that the label ‘recyclable’ does not mean that plastic is actually recycled – only that it could be if someone is prepared to do it! Less than half of it is actually recycled in the UK. If you share our concerns, please come and join us. We meet regularly in Kilverts, and look out for us on Facebook and Instagram – plasticfreehay. Contact us on: plasticfreehay@gmail.com. We’re working with similar groups towards a plastic-free Powys! Article supplied by Juliet Lewis
I am old enough to remember when plastic was not the ubiquitous wrapper of everything in sight, so I don’t buy the argument that although the waste is a problem, it’s somehow a necessary problem. The fact that all UK mussels tested this year contained fragments of plastic must call the lie to that argument

REVIEW
A lunch date in the perfect setting Last month I was invited along to The Bakers’ Table to sample their lunchtime menu. It just so happened the special young man in my life was able to be my lunch date. We had a lovely spot overlooking the River Ennig. Which I was to realise later would be a huge hit with Otis – we could have spent hours sat there looking and waiting for fish and crocodiles! On each wooden table there was a menu as well as a chalk board on the wall of the daily specials. Otis opted for Child’s Millers Lunch consisting of Caerphilly cheese, Talgarth ham, tomato, cucumber, carrot, Bara Havard bread and apple slices. This was ideal for him, in his words this is a picnic lunch! My young man chose a Graig Barn Farm Apple Juice to accompany his meal. I, the indecisive one, couldn’t decide between the soup or a sandwich. Blow me down, there was an option just for me – a small portion of soup and a half sandwich at a bargain price of £5.50. Being a Talgarth girl (well,Velindre), I went for the Talgarth Ham filling for my sandwich and the soup of the day was curried sweet potato. For a drink in this hot weather I ordered an Elderflower Pressé. Both Otis and I went to the counter to order. It was nice to be able to partly see into the kitchen, to see where the bread is baked. For those of you not familiar with The Bakers’Table Café, all bread is freshly baked in their on-site bakery, 5 days a week, using flour milled at Talgarth Mill (adjoined to the café) wherever possible. They offer a full range including wholemeal, granary, white, spelt, sourdough and their best seller, Bara Havard – a white and rye mix. I plan to take Cariad and Otis along to The Mill during the summer holidays so they can see the water-powered flour mill in action. Not a long wait at all – no crocodiles spotted – and our food arrived at our table. Straight away I could see the quality of the food was high. The cut of the ham was great to see. I think we have the nearby butchers to thank for that. The soup was delicious. All the produce was super fresh. Otis especially liked
the edible flower, although I had to explain he’s not to eat Grannie Sue’s when we next visit! The soup and sandwich were perfectly proportioned and what a great idea. Near to the table was a selection of books and a chalk board for the children to play. With Otis’s food being ‘picnic’ style, I let him choose a book to bring back to the table to look at while we ate. To eat a peaceful lunch with a 3-year-old is rare: this was just perfect. We couldn’t leave without sampling the home baked cakes. Otis chose a slice of Bara Brith – he wolfed that down but still remained kind by saving a small piece for his older sister Cariad. I went for the Banana Blondie, something I’ve not seen before, a beautiful slice of white chocolate and banana that I’d happily eat again and again. With Otis still happy with his choice of books, I was also able to enjoy a flat white. A hot flat white. You hearing this, parents? Really, really good coffee. I also saw a good old Babyccino on the menu so had to order one for my very well behaved boy. In most cafés he’d have been climbing the walls by now, so he deserved this treat. The Bakers’ Table is open 6 days a week (closed Mondays): pop along to this wonderful café in the centre of Talgarth. Prices are very reasonable, the service is extremely friendly and ingredients are fresh and locally sourced where possible. They have lots planned over the coming months: Stone Baked Pizza Nights starting at 5.30pm to suit families; Baking Classes once a month (excluding August); dropin family workshops in The Mill throughout the summer holidays on a Wednesday; and a Butterfly Count in The Mill gardens. Keep an eye on local posters, on their website and on social media. Huge thanks to Nicola and the team. We really did have a lovely lunch in a very special spot alongside the river. If you spot any crocodiles, be sure to let us know. The Bakers’ Table,Talgarth reviewed by Lisa Marie Badham

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over recent weeks, as we have had such a sustained period of glorious sunny weather, it has been heartening to see how busy Talgarth has been, with visitors from near and far. Again this year, the Grow for Talgarth team are doing fantastic work in The Square and along the banks of the Enig with their planting boxes. The sunflowers and pick your own area have been particularly appreciated – and have cheered passers-by during these summer days. We have real cause to be grateful for their efforts, not least in sustaining them by daily watering, during the weeks of drought. Our community is so vibrant at this time of year that it is not possible to do justice to all the events, every one volunteer led, which have punctuated these summer weeks. Just recently, I had the privilege of welcoming the visiting party of pupils and parents from our beautiful Italian twin town of Pizzoferrato. At a time when relations with our European neighbours are in the spotlight, it was wonderful to witness the warmth of friendship that continues to develop between our communities, at a local level. Sporting competition has also been a major theme of Talgarth events in recent weeks, with the Brecon Motor Club hosting its Black Mountains Classic Tour on Sunday 1st July, when I had the pleasure of greeting all the participants on their return to The Square. Ysgol y Mynydd Du held its first Sports Day since the new school’s opening on Friday 6th July. As the onsite sports facilities are still to be completed, the school was grateful to Talgarth and District Sports and Community Association (TaDSCA) for hosting the event at King George Vth Playing Fields at Westfields. On the following day, Gwernyfed RFC held a successful Family Fun Day on the adjacent Brian Jones Memorial Field. Congratulations and thanks to all who contributed to the success of these events. No one can have failed to notice that we are all
living through pretty turbulent times, with Cabinet resignations, hundreds of thousands of our fellow residents on the march, demanding a People’s Vote on any Brexit Deal or expressing displeasure at the recent visit of the US President, with an enormous inflatable Trump flying high above the streets of London. With this in mind, I am looking forward to this weekend’s Community Choir Concert in Talgarth Town Hall, with a repertoire of Protest Songs from 1968. Then, as now, people felt compelled to resort to popular protest to make their voices heard. It is fascinating to see history repeat itself. This month also sees our opportunity to contribute thoughts on the proposed development brief on the former Mid Wales Hospital site. It is a vital opportunity for our community to bring forward views and to support the vision or to offer alternative proposals. I urge you to do so, by following the link to the consultation: http://www.beacons-npa.gov.uk/ planning/draft-strategy-and-policy/consultations/. As our youngsters break up school or college for the summer, we as a community can look forward to a further programme of summer events, with Talgarth Sports 2018 offering a packed programme to round off July and preparations now at an advanced stage for Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains, both sure to be amongst the highlights. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, if I can be of help, by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 7th September from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. In any event, I look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes, William

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
We are now well and truly into the summer months. We have been blessed in recent weeks to have enjoyed such glorious weather, with our economy seeing a boom with people getting out to enjoy the weather. Many of our areas biggest events are held over the summer months. Throughout my busy calendar, I try to attend as many local events as possible and this weather is making it even more enjoyable. It was a great privilege to say a few words and present a few awards at the Presentation Evening of the Welsh 2 Day Enduro in the Metropole Hotel, Llandrindod Wells on Friday night. This event has been held in the town for many years and attracts 500 competitors from all over the world including Australia. It has an excellent and hardworking committee and it was a pleasure to be with them again this year. On top of these events it was heartening to see such overwhelming support for the Bracken Trust Cancer Support Centre’s Annual Summer Fair in Llandrindod Wells. The event was opened by the lovely Mrs Jayne Griffiths and had helpers and supporters from far and wide. It was the first time for my wife Liz to visit the centre and as she is a Therapeutic Radiographer in Hereford Hospital’s Cancer Unit, we were grateful to Nurse Helen for the comprehensive tour of the facilities. An amazing centre run by amazing people. I look forward to seeing many of you at the coming summer events across Brecon and Radnorshire, such as the Royal Welsh Show, Brecon County Show and many other smaller village shows. Please come and raise any issues you have locally or nationally with me at these events, I will then be able to take them up on your behalf. At the Royal Welsh Show there will be a large Welsh Conservative Stand where my staff will be available to help.

My colleagues on Powys County Council have recently done something important. Following a social media campaign, Welsh Liberal Democrat, Cllr Pete Roberts, proposed a Motion to Council urging the council’s current Independent/Conservative Cabinet to abandon its proposals to charge disabled drivers (Blue Badge holders) in its car parks. The vote was won! So, local politicians have publicised an unfair proposal that the council had done little to publicise and led the opposition to it, helping to prevent that unfairness and further damage to our local economy, already suffering continued bank branch closures and the uncertainties of Brexit. Which brings me, alas, to the biggest issue facing us and one many people are heartily fed up with – Brexit. As the chaos at Westminster has intensified the possibility of the UK leaving the EU next March without an agreed trading relationship increases. If this happens the UK will start operating on World Trading Organisation (WTO) rules. There will be no ‘transition period’. Most seriously a customs border between Northern Ireland and the Republic will have to be re-established, because the free movement of goods and people will cease and WTO tariffs applied on all exports and imports. Here in Mid Wales, where our ability to export our farm and manufacturing products freely in to the EU is absolutely vital, this is a grim prospect. The UK’s participation in the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) will end and EU farm subsidy payments will cease. Those payments make up 80% of net farm incomes in Wales. The impact on all farm businesses and the wider rural economy will be profound. ‘No Deal’ should be a ‘non-starter’, yet the UK Government is spending millions on preparations for it. UK Government Ministers now have a duty to actually do something useful in the remaining few weeks left for negotiation. Instead of fighting among themselves, for the sake of current and future generations they must work with the EU to preserve that open, free trading relationship that we have developed together over the past 45 years. The Royal Welsh and our local agricultural and village show season is upon us where I hope to meet many people in the coming weeks. Let’s hope that the outcome of all this turmoil means that our communities can remain vibrant and ensure these events, so central to our way of life, can continue for decades to come.

News from... News from Black Mountains Lions Club Black Mountains Lions are happy to able to support Emily Guinane at the start of her journey towards studying Veterinary Science at university in 2019. Emily is a local girl who has studied at Gwernyfed High School achieving high GCSE grades for 10 A* and 2 As. She is planning a two-week trip to the Kruger Park in South Africa as a volunteer and will be shadowing a vet who specialises in valuable work with vulnerable species such as the big 5.The welfare of these animals is imperative to stabilise the fragile ecosystem. The Black Mountains Lions have contributed £500 towards the £2,390 she needs to raise. This trip will give her a unique insight into the rehabilitation and clinical work that is carried out by professionals in the Reserve and will provide exceptional experience for her start at vet school. We wish her success and look forward to seeing her again at our 7th November meeting when we will
hear about her experiences. For more information about how we help people locally contact: David James on 0845 833 7403 or email Cherylhyde@btinternet.com. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month and if you would like to attend to see how we help please get in touch. Alternatively you could join us at one of our social meetings. Check our website: www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/blackmtns for info about Lions International and your local club and activities. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Our thanks again to Judi Bunn, our speaker for the June club meet. She gave a very impressive account of working behind the scenes, much travel involved and admin, logistics etc, with many famous film stars. Hence the title, ‘A Life Behind the Camera’, with lots of humour throughout, an afternoon to remember. Away again on our June trip to Blist Hill, Ironbridge. A thoroughly enjoyable day had by all, and the weather great. So interesting and pleasant. Our 4th July Club meeting was a Treasure Hunt with a Twist and Strawberry Cream Tea. Pleased to say it was well attended on a perfect day, and good to see

It was all good fun. Many thanks, and appreciation to all our committee and everyone who gave a hand on the day. By Eva Lantos – Y13 GHS On Monday 9th July, Mr Carter and Mr Miller took a few sixth formers and Year Elevens from Gwernyfed High School for a day at the most famous tennis event in the world.
I won’t lie, at the beginning of the day I was pretty damn clueless about the rules and expectations of the tennis world, and post-Wimbledon I feel only slightly more understanding. Despite the little hole in my brain where said rules should belong, I had an absolutely amazing time and discovered a very surprising new found love for tennis! The journey was long and traffic was quite bad, however having slept most of it I was refreshed and ready to face the world of Wimbledon when we arrived. So, even though watching hours of the sport at what can only be described as the home of tennis itself failed to put the game rules in my brain, here are 7 alternative things I learned after my first ever trip to Wimbledon. 1. If you go on a day when it is hot, bring a fan! Otherwise, you will be extremely jealous of everyone in possession of one around you looking extremely cool while you drown in a pool of your own sweat. 2. Subsequently (and this is a big one ladies and gents) do NOT wear nylon. 3. The toilets there are impressively clean and fancy. 4. Everyone there, and I mean everyone, looks like

they know exactly what they are doing with their life. Side note: it may make you feel very small and very confused and also cause you to mentally hit yourself for not wearing a matching floral co-ord set and not owning a Louis Vuitton handbag the size of a small country. 5.The atmosphere there is amazing – you can almost smell the pure Britishness radiating off everyone. Seriously though, everyone seems ridiculously happy. 6. Strawberries and cream at Wimbledon? Is something that feels very good to check off your mental bucket list? 7. I will definitely be going back next year! News from Hay Town Council We have some exciting events happening in Hay in the coming months. The WWI Commemoration weekend is happening on the first weekend in August with a full schedule of events. Please come and support. We are also delighted to be supporting an exciting new multi-platform arts, music and performance project planned for Hay-on-Wye in 2019. Curated by some of the biggest names in music and the arts, KINGDOM PROJECT will be an annual
event designed to boost Hay’s economy. It kicks off this coming August bank holiday weekend with A Jaunt through the Kingdom, a taster event designed to introduce the project to the Hay community. Three high profile events are planned at St Mary’s Church, the Old Electric Shop and The Globe at Hay. Full event details and ticket information can be found at www.kingdomproject.co.uk. As most of you are aware, Barclays Bank will be closing its doors on 28th September, which will leave Hay with no high street banks, like many other rural towns. Barclays have been in talks with the Post Office to offer a similar service to what NatWest and HSBC have with them. We hope that this will put those who do not bank online slightly more at ease that there will be a face-to-face service available. News from Timbuktu Toilet Target Reached H2T agreed with three schools in Timbuktu to build new toilets for the girls as soon as funds were raised in Hay. Donations and a very successful campaign during the Hay Festival week enabled us to meet the target and work will be carried out during the

schools’ summer break. Thanks to everyone who contributed and to Hay Festival for their support. From next term the girls will have privacy, enabling them to attend school regularly. Girls in the bursary project continue to exceed expectations in their achievements, continuing their studies beyond the Second Cycle Schools, working and contributing to their community. Together with the Medics for Timbuktu and their project to support two girls through midwifery training, Hay’s impact on girls in Timbuktu is significant. The current girls project concludes this summer but it looks very likely that funds have been secured to work for two more years with girls in Alkaya Yehia and Fondogoumo school and to develop the project in Alpha
Daouna school. Folk in Timbuktu are delighted by this continuing and developing support from Hay. Congratulations are sent to Ali Sidi, the English teacher in Alkaya Yehia who not only secured a place to further his English studies on a prestigious teacher trainer course at Bamako University but gets married this summer to his midwife fiancé. News from U3A Hay The annual gathering of Welsh Bards at the Eisteddfod was first held in 1861 and this year will visit Cardiff. But why is this such an enduring and deeply significant event? At the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 21st August at 10.30am, Ydwena Jones will explain the history and the meaning of the celebration of the Welsh Festival and celebration of the arts in her presentation ‘Eisteddfod’.There will also be a poetry competition for 14-line poems to describe what we hold as being the most important aspect of Welsh life. So put pen to paper, and enter – we could have our own Bard of Hay in our midst! Full details coming to members by email or via the phone number below.

Time By a visitor to The HayDay Café Time is something we’ve invented. It makes us discontented. You’ll never find heaven in a dream state. Subconscious mind is timeless, changeless. Deathless. When I think of it, I never feel restless. My ego is in abeyance. I am free to roam the skies and be among those who are wise. Leave the humdrum far behind. But, above all, be careful, and kind.

Beautiful unusual gifts and treasures naturally found or inspirationally created. Birthstone for August: Peridot Peridot is the name for the mineral Olivine, always occurring in shades of green and often containing black chromite inclusions. Olivine is also found in meteorites and basalts recovered from the moon. It has a hardness of 6.5–7 and was used in jewellery from very early periods. Named from the Arabic Fanat, meaning precious stone. Thought to cure mental and physical timidity by strengthening the nervous system.

We have several micraster echinoids from Florida, USA. These sea urchins are unique among animals as they have an internal hydrolic system. Echinoid means spiny skin. We also have Crinoids, the oldest forms having long stems attached to rocks and floating wood.
