Welcome to our September issue. Children back to school. Somehow a sense of normality returns. A great variety of new advertisers join us this month: N Parry Accountancy Ltd, page 2. We’re pleased to announce that we’re holding our first ever Local Landscapes Photography Exhibition. You’re all invited. If you can make the launch night, please join us! Otherwise just pop along over the three months, October–December, to see what a high standard of photography we have in our area. Various works will be on sale. All photos will be taken within the Brecon Beacons National Park. We live in a beautiful part of the world: let’s get the perfect image on our walls! Talking of talent, be sure to take a look at our Arts & Crafts feature, starting on page 28. Clare has sourced an amazing array to excite you. NEW SCHOOL!
Llangors CiW Primary School Number of pupils? 132 (not including nursery children). How many classrooms? We have six classrooms, two pods and two joint nursery classrooms. Opening date of the new school? We started in this new school after February half term 2018 and did a community walk on the first day (Monday 19th February) from the old school to the new school. Parents, other local people, friends of our school came along, and then after tea and cakes toured the new school and grounds. The official opening of the school was on Friday 11th May with the Archbishop of Wales, Chairman of Powys Council, and Kirsty Williams AM, the Education Minister. List some of the things that make the new school better than the old one: We saw the new school grow from an empty field to where we are now. It is an impressive building and we are lucky to have this place to learn and play. Since we have settled down in our new school, we have come to realize certain
‘‘
2. Security 3. Water fountains 4. The after-school clubs. What after school clubs are currently available?
The clubs held weekly are cricket, netball and
Does the site offer any other clubs? The babysitting services currently available are playgroup (every Wednesday), after school club, breakfast club, and holiday club which is held every summer holidays. Any future plans for the school or grounds? When the grass has grown, we will have a school field again and we can’t wait. Hopefully we will make future plans to purchase stage lights and curtains, along with outdoor equipment such as a climbing frame and various other obstacles.
features of the new school aren’t the same. We miss the field, the trees, but in time this will be sorted. The upside of the new school is that we now have after school sports clubs that we missed out on during the growing development of this new school. The things that are good about the new school that we did not have in the old school are: 1. Space
football club, all of which are held on the M.U.G.A. (multi-use-games-area).
School Council members (2017–2018): Chair: Marnie Carleton (Chair & Road Safety Rep), Megan Pritchard (Secretary & Healthy Schools Rep), Roly Warry (Eco Rep), Kai Price (Criw Cymraeg Rep), Leo Punter (Year 6 Rep), Oliver Dorise-Turrall (Year 5 Rep), Archie Webb (Year 4 Rep), George Whittington (Year 3 Rep), Delyth Williams (Year 2 Rep), Fergus Martineau (Year 1 Rep), Mr Williams (Staff Rep), Mrs Francis (Non-Teaching Staff Rep), Mrs Freeland (Non-Teaching Staff Rep), Mrs Howells (Govenor Rep).
Our new school is full of new opportunities for everyone. My only regret is that as Year 6s we could only spend half a year here. School Council Secretary Megan Pritchard

Get to really know... Rob Derrick Rob has always had a passion for the outdoors, and thanks to his mother’s encouragement he pursued his dream of escaping city life and working in the field of Fisheries & Game. He attended Sparsholt College of Agriculture followed by a wide range of jobs in the field including keepering at the Glan Usk estate, working in the fishing tackle trade and managing a fishery, working with anti-poaching patrols, rearing wild salmon, sea trout and pearl mussels, and, latterly as Fishery & Conservation Officer for the Wye catchment. He eventually decided to give it all up to escape all the paperwork, and now runs The Keeper’s Pocket in Hay. Place of birth? Bristol. Where do you live now? Hay-on-Wye. Marital status? Floating. Occupation? “The Keeper’s Pocket”, Dealer in Antiques, The Odd & Unusual. Children? Two sons. Pets? A single grumpy cat squatter that moved in and never left! “Tiger” by name, Tiger by nature. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Jaque Cousteau’s Undersea World. Are you a collector of anything? Antique Keepering Items. I enjoy the associated history of the Ole boys working with nature. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? An otter, sleek, largely harmless but with an edge, and living in a beautiful yet testing environment. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To go back in time. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Who can I wind up today? (in a nice way!), it’s important to laugh every day. What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? What will tomorrow bring my way? Most exciting thing you’ve won? A trophy for winning a large fishing competition on the River Avon at Bath when I was 14.
Two lessons life has taught you? Take nothing and no one for granted. What makes you grumpy? Bad manners and grumpy people. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? A small rural cottage set beside a river, a couple of canine friends, a hawk, oh, and of course an Aston Martin. Have any bad habits? MUST stop smoking... oops. Do you believe in the afterlife? I can’t get to grip with the one I have let alone contemplate a follow on! Best present ever received? A battery-powered hovercraft that only worked for an hour and had to be returned... grrrr (it was when I was a child!). List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Too easy going! And too trusting. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? The Galapagos Islands, the wildlife would be amazing. List three goals on your life’s to-do list: Move to a cottage, have another dog in my life, just be happy. Name one regret you have: Not getting a job on the Hampshire Avon, despite being shortlisted from over 2,000 applicants to the final two. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Looking forward to being an adult. Name one thing you love about being an adult: The freedom to act like a child. What’s your favourite song of all time? I like many, and many by The Script. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Chill out with good, fun company. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Recover from the night before. Have any hidden talents? I couldn’t possibly comment. What would be your dream job? To be a River Keeper on Hampshire’s River Test, Itchen or Avon – nearly had it! If you had to change your name, what would you change it to? Just put Sir in front of the one I have. Sum yourself up in five words: Cheerful, helpful, mischievous, considerate, trusting.

BUSINESS PROFILE
The Rhydspence Inn
Local residents Mark and Lowri Price hated to see The Rhydspence Inn, near Whitney-on-Wye, closed for business, so in February 2016 they took it over and reopened. They now employ around twelve people, and serve customers from an area of about 20 miles’ radius from Hay, locals and tourists alike. What made you set up the business? We wanted to see the place up and running again. Where are you based? Whitney-on-Wye, but we are in the parish of Brilley. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Definitely not to move, we love it here, and we have no plans for any extensions at the moment! How many staff do you employ? About twelve in total, both full and part time. Have you won any awards in your business? Second place on Four in a Bed, and an AA Dinner Award. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? 1)The buck stops with you. 2) Don’t expect your staff to do any jobs you wouldn’t/couldn’t do yourself. Who is your ideal client? Friendly, relaxed customers who come for the whole night out. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Fully reopening The Rhydspence Inn to the public – it’s always been an inn, welcoming locals and travellers alike. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? Our excellent and tremendously loyal staff. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: That it was the other side of the
stream! Then we’d be in Wales! List five goals on your business to-do list: 1) Create a reading room above the porch. 2) Get rid of the Peach Bathroom in Room 1! 3) Finally understand how the heating system works. 4) Get an AA rosette for the quality of our food. 5) Retire, and leave the kids in charge! Name one regret you have about your business: Not one. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? No, I still can’t juggle! What would be your dream assignment? Working as a wine taster, or so my husband tells me! Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? Too many to remember. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? The chef tipping a whole pot of gravy over himself; luckily it was cold! He did see the funny side of it afterwards. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? We are open every day and evening for both food and drink. Our Sunday lunch is our pride and joy. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Sent the residents off with a lovely breakfast to start the day off properly. What do you know now that you wish you knew before starting your business? How long a day is! Sum your business up in five words: Welcoming, friendly, relaxed, fun, unique. Starters, Traditional Sunday Roasts, with Fish and Vegetarian options available too. Homemade, old-fashioned and newlyinspired desserts to finish off the perfect meal. Either enjoy the views of the Wye Valley from our beautiful restaurant, or perhaps a more informal setting close to one of our fireplaces. REVIEW
Clean Machine! One night in early June, after supper with friends in Boughrood, we happened to catch sight of Wayne Jones cleaning a car. We got chatting to him and soon realised that he was a professional valet of cars. What a result! My car needed a massive clean inside and out for our daughter’s wedding so we booked Wayne to come the following day. He did a wonderful job on the car, the leather seats were pristine and the exterior shone so that you could see your face in it. A few days later I drove the bridesmaids to the church and felt a very proud mother of the bride with the white wedding ribbons on the front of my sparkling silver estate car. It was immaculate, like new again. Great job, great value! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Wayne again and we would definitely use him again in the future. To book Wayne to clean your car see his contact details in his advert below. Clean Attention to Detail is his company name, and it does what it says on the tin. Review by Clare Williams

SEPTEMBER
Tips for Gardeners Flower Garden 2 Plant spring flowering bulbs.
2 Replace summer bedding as it comes to the end with winter bedding. 2 Support tall flowers with supports. Kitchen Garden 2 Cover late crops of salads, courgettes and carrots with fleece/cloche. 2 Plant spring cabbage plants. 2 Continue to harvest produce as it is ready. Greenhouse 2 Plant early spring bulbs in pots. 2 Bring in tender plants to overwinter. 2 Sow hardy annuals for early spring flowers. The Lawn 2 Once the dry weather comes to an end scarify and aerate the lawn. 2 Apply autumn lawn feed. 2 Sow new lawns from seed. General Advice 2 Water and deadhead all plants. 2 Get the compost going, autumn clearing generates lots of compostable waste such as leaves. Pond 2 Continue to feed fish until the weather breaks. 2 As leaves begin to fall, ensure the pond is cleared of fallen leaves on a daily basis. Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in September
It’s not impossible that someone might spot this walking along the Wye in Brecknock or Radnorshire and it is quite distinctive as the picture shows. This is because it crops up sporadically in our area from seed washed down from populations higher up the river.
Dipsacus pilosus Small Teasel This is a rare plant for us but its common relative, Common Teasel will be well into the seeding stage and attracting goldfinches by now. Small Teasel tends to grow in shady spots – often near rivers, and flowers at this time of year.
The name “Teasel” for plants of this genus is derived from the larger plant’s historical role in the cloth industry. Teasels were used both for “teasing” out the fibres of wool before spinning and for raising the “nap” of the cloth after weaving. The latter process required a special Teasel plant with hooked spines. These “Fullers Teasels” are still found in the wild as remnants of their commercial production for the industry. They were even used in the age of mechanised mills with Teasel heads being attached to the iron mechanisms. The plant illustrated gets its name from its relatives’ usage and had no commercial importance. John Crellin

Menopause metabolism “Cat, as I’ve got older my tummy fat has got out of control!” I hear this so often! First know this: it’s not your fault, but you do need to know how to adapt to the new hormonal status you find yourselves in. Your nutritional and training requirements are very different from when you were a young woman. NB: The last time I wrote about the menopause, a male reader essentially said ‘Ew’! But there’s no way I’m going to shy away from this subject.Women need to know what’s going on, and how to cope. You see – the menopause CAN play havoc with our metabolisms – and you do hear horror stories about it, with so many dreading this life phase – but it doesn’t have to be that way. Indeed there are areas in the world where the ‘symptoms’ of menopause are practically non-existent! Let’s talk: The perimenopause phase is characterised by lower progesterone than before, with unstable oestrogen levels, so this period can feel very unpredictable. The menopausal stage results in drops in both oestrogen and progesterone. Now consider this: oestrogen helps us to be more insulin sensitive and thus better able to handle starches and sugars. Together oestrogen and progesterone block the actions of cortisol (which rises
with stress). Therefore we are exposed to, and far less able to manage any batterings from excess carbohydrate intake or stress exposure. And ‘stress’ can come in many forms: dehydration, under/over eating, deadlines, ill-advised relationship choices, over-training, nutrient deficiencies... So: how to help our bods? First support our physiology by not over-stressing the metabolism. Training: switch from longer harder, maybe too frequent workouts, to: shorter, 3 weekly ones (max) but with ‘spikes’. Your emphasis is now on mindful, long, slow walking (an hour each day if you can). Post menopause. Here, oestrogen and progesterone levels will remain low, but the ovaries go on producing testosterone, which may increase the spread of belly fat in women. To combat this, take advantage of testosterone by weight training a few times a week. I can guide you as to the best protocols to follow here but don’t fear going with heavier weights as you get fitter. This is your way forward, I promise you. For my no-obligation ‘meno fact sheet’ just contact me, and it’s yours! gymandtonichay@gmail.com Article supplied by Cat Wyllie-Fox, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Hay in Bloom Hay now has its very own Hay in Bloom group, set up by local volunteers, councillors and businesses with the aim to make Hay-on-Wye the town of books and blooms. Recently the ‘Bloomers’ entered the National ‘Cultivation Street’ Competition: ColourYour Life, which involved planting free geraniums provided in the most innovative and creative way. A scaled-representation wooden planter of an old Great Western Railway steam engine was created by local volunteers Peter Bloodworth and Alan Powell. The first train in Hay for 55 years is now on display, filled with the geraniums, next to the Old Railway Line footpath under the bridge. Find out how you can get involved with making Hay bloom, if the train won a prize, and the winners of the town’s business and residents 2018 ‘in Bloom’ competition, by following @hayinbloom on Facebook or contacting Nick Burdekin at: haytownclerk@hotmail.co.uk.

Local Talent: Polly James and it is a great feeling delivering a completed piece to clients. Have you any future plans for your work? I would like to develop my collection and I am excited to begin work in colour this autumn. I also have a number of really great commissions to get to grips with.
Type of artist? Wildlife artist specialising in charcoal and graphite studies. Range of products? Original drawings, prints and cards. Price range? Originals £225–£550. Prints from £140. Cards £2.50. How long have you been an artist? I spent my childhood endlessly drawing farm animals and anybody that would stand still! However professionally I have only been an artist since last year. I began undertaking private commissions and it has grown from there and more recently I have been working on producing my own collection with two exhibitions so far this year.
What advice would you give a local artist? I have really benefited from talking to other artists to get as much advice as possible. The community in Hay is absolutely brilliant and I have been very lucky in the support I have received from friends and family and the network of creative people that we are very fortunate to have locally. Which other local artists do you admire? Many, including Shelagh Popham, Victoria Keeble, Pat Birks, Viv and Roger Luxton, Sarah Bolton, Simon Dorrell, Catherine Sheers and Alexia Tucker.
Where did you train or gain experience? After studying art at school I then trained in classical drawing in Florence at the Charles Cecil Studios and then in Salisbury and London at The Sarum Studio and London Fine Arts Studios. Where can your products be purchased? I have an exhibition at The River Café, Glasbury from 3rd September to 25th November. The show includes original charcoal and graphite studies as well as a collection of cards and prints available on request. I also undertake commissions and I can be contacted via my website for any enquiries. What has been your proudest moment? In April it was brilliant to have my first exhibition alongside a collection of local artists in aid of St Peter’s Church, Glasbury. I also love undertaking commissions

Hay’s own Arts & Crafts Living National Treasures In Japan, craft and makers are valued so highly that there exists a list of individuals (and groups) who have attained high levels of mastery in their particular skills. They are the Living National Treasures. The Hay Makers gallery in St John’s Place has its own Living National Treasures in the form of potter Pat Birks and printmaker Victoria Keeble. They were both founding members of the co-operative of Designer Makers which was established back in 1987. Both are still making 31 years on, with the same vitality and enthusiasm, their work constantly evolving, never stagnating. The gallery, which prides itself on selling handmade, high quality crafts at affordable prices, provides a showcase for them and the other members who include a woodturner, a stonecarver, a feltmaker and an embroiderer, as well as showing the work of visiting makers in ever changing exhibitions.
From fine art to wood work, ceramics to textiles, and from jewellery making to furniture making, via drama, music, weaving, felting and sculpture, our area offers a huge range of art and crafting activity both by professionals and for enthusiastic amateurs. We hope you discover something to excite you in our arts & crafts feature...

Julian Stanley With a blend of skill and versatility, Julian Stanley produces a range of exquisite furniture, much of it inspired by the Italian, French and English classical periods. Meticulous copies can be created, alongside his own stunning original pieces ranging from personalised carved mirrors to bespoke furniture, often derived from natural forms. Architectural work of all dimensions is also undertaken and complete rooms can be designed and furnished, working closely to the clients specifications, creating a unique environment which mirrors the expectations of the individual. Julian’s artistic ability and love of wildlife and birds of prey are reflected in dynamic and figurative portrait busts and sculptures. All his work is enhanced by the finest gilding, painting and marbling, polishing and upholstery. Julian’s great interest in horses has led to his development of painting skills producing oils depicting racing scenes and horses and ponies in landscape settings.

New in Town: Dragonfly Woodwork Where are you based and what is the area in which you work? I have a workshop based outside of Brecon but a customer base extending into Europe. Why the Hay area? The inspirational countryside, the diverse, local community and the eclectic range of regular events. Why did you decide to open this business? It was the natural next step for me – the accumulation of 25 years of experience, interest and passion. What are some of challenges you encountered? Establishing my reputation as that of a traditional, highly skilled and quality craftsman. In that respect, I am very different to a regular builder or joiner. What do you wish you had known before you started? That starting a new business does not happen overnight, particularly given the nature, detail and integrity of my work. Is this the first business you have launched? I ran a successful carpentry and joinery business in the Channel Islands for five years, before deciding to move back home to Wales with my partner and
young family. How is this different to the others you have launched? Alongside offering a traditional carpentry and joinery service, I am also designing and making furniture, custom made to order, and offering a range of wood working courses from my own workshop. What type of education or experience helped you to open this business? I began a traditional apprenticeship when I left school at 16; working with wood is the only thing I have ever wanted to do. That was over 25 years ago. Starting at the bottom, learning the trade and working my way up, I have developed a deep and detailed understanding of the carpentry and joinery profession. Describe a typical day in your business: There is no typical day. That is why I love my work so much. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Don’t hold back – go for it.

One Good Turn
Un Tro Da (One Good Turn) was created from a passion for woodworking, an admiration for tradition and a fondness for nature. I am Jay, and I would love to acquaint you with my unconditional love of woodturning and woodworking. Un Tro Da originally started life as a hobby which became an adventure into all things wood, which I found myself discovering and mastering as I journeyed forward. In my woodworking practice, I have always tried to heed the Northmen Guild code of ethics: Love what you do, do what you love. Quality, not quantity. Value, not price. Craft, not business. I have recently begun to adapt Un Tro Da into a more full-time venture, and in doing so, would enjoy the prospect of offering a unique handmade experience to others. Just remember: ‘Always use the whole box of crayons’. Article supplied by Jay Bailey of Un Tro Da

Carol Peace @ The Table Co-founder of the Bristol Drawing School Carol Peace is an internationally collected figurative sculptor who could not work without drawing. “It’s all about trying to see – drawing enables that.” Described as ‘enduringly popular’, Carol originally studied sculpture at Winchester School of Art and then drawing at The Royal Drawing School. The sculptures are made in clay, which like charcoal is quick to make marks with; once finished it is cast into bronze. “My work is about the every person, the you, the me. After making sculpture for over 25 years I realise that in my work you see you, and I see me and I see you.” In Carol’s work the ‘plain’ girl can be super and she can fly; whether standing on a mountain in declaration or silent, there is always a quiet strength. “Silently Super is for the quiet people, they shine deep gold in the shadows.”
CAROL PEACE 8th–22nd September 2018 Val Harris would like to invite you to her exhibition of Sculpture and Life Drawing by figurative sculptor Carol Peace which opens on Saturday 8th September and is open daily 10am–4pm throughout hArt until Sunday 16th September. During these eight days larger sculptures can be viewed in the secret garden just around the corner from the gallery in Brook Street where coffee and cake will be served by Johnny and his team at The Bean Box. The exhibition closes on Saturday 22nd September. “My work is about the every person, the you, the me. It’s about everyday life, in its minutiae, the pain and the joy ... the sheer fantasticness of it all.” – Carol Peace Figure with Two Circles, Bronze, 60 cms high, ed. of 14

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over recent weeks, since the intensely hot and dry period of June and July gave way to the sunshine and showers of early August, many of us have come to appreciate the increased moisture levels. Gardeners and allotment holders have been glad of the respite and farmers have seen their pasture fields recover a little, hopefully easing the intensity of the fodder crisis which has been so widely predicted. With many areas of our national life suffering from human induced uncertainty, it is almost reassuring – and certainly levelling – to be reminded of the importance of food and water security. We have cause to remember the vital contribution made by Dwr Cymru and other utility workers, as well as by farmers, who work regardless of the elements to feed the nation and to maintain our export trade with our European neighbours.
recently received news that caused me to reflect,
Wye Local readers may recall that, following last year’s Powys County Council elections, I was nominated to join the Dyfed–Powys Police and Crime Panel, an appointment subsequently confirmed by the Home Office. Dyfed–Powys Police cover a vast rural area and, as citizens, we all depend upon the police – and other blue light services – at key points in our lives. For further information about the Panel’s work in holding Police and Crime Commissioner, Dafydd Llywelyn, to account, please visit our website: www.dppoliceandcrimepanel.wales. All meetings are open to the press and public, and with the prior permission of the Chair, individual residents can ask questions or make a statement in relation to policing matters. From this autumn, our proceedings will also be webcast, to make our work more open and transparent to the wider public in the Dyfed– Powys force area.

As a town, we in Talgarth have lost our share of valued community members in recent times, and it is invidious to single out individuals. However, I
on the loss not only of a real contributor locally, but also on an all Wales level. Roy Jones of Woodlands Avenue, known to many of us as ‘Roy the Runner’, did so much to nurture sporting talent in our area over decades, as well as serving Neath RFC with distinction. His devotion to his family, his community, his pigeons and his allotment, together with his wicked sense of fun were widely known. We also have cause to thank Roy for his leadership of the Talgarth Allotments Association, when he presided over a period of exceptional growth. Like his beloved Freda, who predeceased him, Roy had a special Talgarth quality: he thought and fought more for other people than he did for himself. We think of Ron, Kenny and the wider family at this time, as they As our youngsters look forward with a mixture of hope and trepidation to their return to school or college, our community can reflect upon a successful and eventful summer, with Talgarth Sports 2018 back in July and Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains in more recent days amongst the highlights. I hope that we can look forward to a temperate late summer, as we prepare to mark the harvest next month. News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
As another summer draws to a close I always reflect back and look at how the festivals and events here in Brecon and Radnorshire attract tourists to our area and the effect that has on our communities. In recent months we have been blessed with weather that has attracted tourists from across the globe to our beautiful area. Events such as the Hay Festival, the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show, Green Man Festival and the Brecon Jazz/Fringe Festival are vital to our area and bring in hundreds of thousands of people over the summer months. I believe it is vital these shows are given the promotion and recognition they deserve. Event organisers, volunteers and local politicians must come together to ensure these events continue to grow, thrive and increase their appeal. Every year I try to attend as many of our festivals and events as possible to show my support for what is being done to promote some of the finest event in Wales. Between now and Christmas I intend on meeting with various businesses and organisations to see what they believe needs to be done to help increase tourism here in Brecon and Radnorshire. Not only to our big events, but all year round to help small

“I had no expectations for my first distant healing session with Julie. However I found it so very powerful! Within the first five minutes I began to feel a strong heat throughout the whole body, which lasted the full session, accompanied by the deepest state of relaxation I have ever experienced! The following day I was quite ‘taken aback’ by the ease of my authentic honesty, in a difficult situation with my partner – I have struggled with self empowerment for many years – but this time it all felt so easy... there was no difficulty in expressing my truth. I have continued to feel self-confident, openhearted and positive... so much so, I am treating myself to a follow-up session in a couple of weeks. Thank you so much Julie, I can hardly believe the change in me!” Gabriella, Ambleside

businesses across Brecon and Radnorshire grow. As a constituency we face many challenges, but tourism is an area of continual growth that we must make the most of to ensure Brecon and Radnorshire is a place known around the world for its natural beauty and unforgettable atmosphere.

I hope you and your families are having an excellent summer. It has been great to see so many of you at our fantastic shows and cultural events around the constituency. These events are a big part of our way of life here in Mid Wales and I want to place on record my thanks to the countless organisers and volunteers who make them happen. I try to speak to as many people as possible at these events, and one of the key issues that keeps coming up is access to healthcare. People recognise it is a challenge, delivering health services in such a rural area, and recognise the hard work done by our superb NHS staff, but they still demand and deserve good access to those vital services. You may remember from a previous column that I have been trying to improve ambulance response times in the constituency. In recent months I have had meetings with patients, paramedics and Welsh Ambulance officials. In August, I also visited one of the Ambulance’s call centres to see how the calls are handled and ambulances are dispatched. It was a fascinating and humbling experience to see the high pressure calls being handled in a calm and professional manner. The conversations I had in these meetings were crucial in helping me understand what the problems we face are, and how we can overcome them. I will make sure the things I have learned will feed in to my work in the National Assembly for Wales. I will continue to do all I can to improve healthcare in Brecon and Radnorshire and there is more to be done, if you have ideas on how things could improve, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Please call my office on 01874 625 739, email me at Kirsty.Williams@ assembly.wales, or write to me at 4 Watergate, Brecon, Powys, LD3 9AN.

News from... News from 1st Hay-on-Wye Scouts The 1st Hay-on-Wye Scout group was formed in June 2017 as part of the Radnor Area Scouts. To date we have 22 Scouts, 18 Cubs and are aiming to set up a Beaver Colony for the 12 young people already on the waiting list. We are also affiliated to Hay Wyerd Explorers who have 22 young people. So far this year we have had 7 camps, allowing different groups from the District to join with 1st Hay. We are committed to giving the young people amazing adventures and fantastic opportunities, which would not have been possible without the donation of £2000 from The Black Mountain Lions Club. Other donations have come from Hay Co-op and some individuals. The Group Scout Leader has high aims for the coming year, including setting up our own permanent venue, opening Beavers, consolidating equipment making it possible to run camps and events. Most
importantly we need to gain assistant leaders across all sections so our young people can reach their full Scouting potential, whilst having lots of fun and gaining life skills. Anyone interested in joining or helping with the group should contact Claire on: 07717 478 272 or by email on: hayonwyescoutgroup@outlook.com. How can Black Mountains Lions help you? Contact: David James on 0845 833 7403, or Cheryl Hyde at cherylhyde@btinternet.com.

News from Bryngwyn RDA What a busy summer we’ve had! First, we purchased a new pony, Joseph. He has proved himself to be a real asset, and very popular with both riders and volunteers. In June we took several of our younger riders to Clytha Park Horse Show. Many returned the proud winners of rosettes. A good time had by all. In July we held our fun day. The sun shone on the festivities which included a ridden performance of ‘Sugarlump and the Unicorn’, a dressage demonstration, stalls, BBQ and games. A very healthy £921 was raised, which was divided between Bryngwyn RDA and the Air Ambulance. We also had our annual week in Kington Community shop, raising nearly £1,000, our best year yet. Many thanks to everyone who supported us with both events. I am delighted to report that one of our riders went to the RDA National Championships at Hartpury College, where she earned 6th place in the Countryside Challenge. A very big well done! To cap it all, our long-awaited new mounting block
and ramp is now in use. It has made mounting so much easier and safer for everyone. This was only made possible by the generous donations which we have received, so many thanks to all those who helped us achieve our goal. News from Fairtrade Hay A big thank you to everyone who came to our film screening of Dukale’s Dream at the Globe. We learnt a lot about the challenges facing coffee growers and the importance of ethical purchasing. It was also fascinating to hear from Mohamed from Timbuktu about his amazing leather work and life in our twin town in Mali. You can buy Mohamed’s beautiful products from Jump4Timbuktu in the Haymakers. Did you know there are 4,500 certified Fairtrade products available? Here in Hay you can buy anything from orange juice in the Co-op, cotton clothing from Number Two, coffee and chocolate from Eighteen Rabbit and olive oil from Hay Deli. Buying Fairtrade helps guarantee a fair wage for workers and enables them to invest in their businesses and communities. Pop in to Eighteen Rabbit to read the 10 principles of fair trade on their walls.

Our group meets informally every couple of months to promote Hay as a Fairtrade town. If you’d like to get involved email louise@eighteenrabbit.co.uk or visit us on Facebook www.facebook.com/ fairtradehay. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Well I do hope you have been enjoying our brilliant summertime, and keeping yourselves well hydrated – whatever your choice! – unlike the suffering gardens of late. As I write, being early August I anticipate it hasn’t changed too much by the time you receive your magazines in September. Forward to our next club meeting which will be on Wednesday 26th September in Glasbury Village Hall, 2.30pm–4.30pm, for Poems and Tales, and cake with your tea later. This has proved in the past to be a very well attended event... don’t let it change. Come along and join us, armed with your favourite poems, tales and adventures. New members and guests welcome. A raffle will be made as usual and small items donated for prizes always welcome. Thanks. We are always looking for new ideas and speakers
for our meetings, if you have any or know of any speakers we would love to hear from you. Surprising as it may be, Glasbury Get-Together Club for Retired People would have been going for 10 years in January 2019, and at our last committee meeting in July your six committee members thought it would be good to mark this occasion. We are working on it! A possible trip to the National Roman Legion Museum at Caerleon in September. Interested? Let us know. Further info? Ring Gloria on 01497 847 726 or Judith on 01497 847 274. News from Hay Chamber of Commerce It has been a fantastic summer in Hay-on-Wye with the warm weather encouraging many visitors to come and see our beautiful town. We’ve also had some great new businesses popping up over the past few months and we wish them all every success. News from Hay Markets You can’t beat the hustle and bustle of a great market and Hay’s Thursday Market Day is no exception. For good natured banter to top-notch bargains, for chard to Chaucer, for doughnuts to dungarees, this unique shopping and social experience is at the heart of Hay’s local community. The exceptionally warm summer brought many tourists to Hay, and many new traders, such as nose-to-tail curlyhaired Welsh Mangalitza bacon and vegan Swedish/ Caribbean baked goods. As we head into autumn we’re looking forward to the change in emphasis in the run up to the busy Christmas period. Hay Markets is always looking for new and interesting traders to add to the market mix. If you would like to find out more about having a stall, or would like to try a market, please email info@haymarkets.org or call Emily on 07989 980 601. energy, you can get involved in physical garden work, or help with simple tasks like watering plants, or selling over the gate. You can join in when you are able, no matter how infrequently, and socialise with others as you wish. flu all year round, but particularly so in the winter season, which is why it’s sometimes called “seasonal flu”. The annual flu vaccine can help reduce your risk of getting flu each year, although it’s not 100% effective because it doesn’t work against every possible type of flu virus. The best time to have the vaccine is in the autumn, between September and early November, before flu starts to circulate. You should have the vaccination every year to stay protected, as the viruses that cause the flu change every year. The following groups are eligible for free NHS flu vaccination: • Those aged 65 years and over • Pregnant women • Adults who are morbidly obese (have BMI of 40 or above) • Those who live in long-stay residential homes • Carers
• All two and three year olds • Those aged six month to under 65 years in clinical risk groups (see below) • Anyone who has chronic heart, kidney, liver disease • Anyone with neurological disease (including stroke or mini stroke) • Anyone who suffers with asthma or COPD • Anyone with diabetes (including diet controlled) • Anyone who has lower immunity due to a health condition or treatment • Anyone who has a poorly functioning spleen (or had spleen removed). Appointments for the flu vaccination will be available at both Hay-on-Wye and Talgarth surgeries throughout October. Please book your appointment soon. There will be designated flu clinics available for children. News from U3A Hay Pottery and the making of pots is an ancient skill that is more difficult than it looks, as anyone who has tried will surely agree! But what does it tell us about previous civilisations and communities, and how has this skill developed from being purely functional to become the beautiful and varied art form that it is today? Come to the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 18th September at 10.30am when the Albrighton Potters, Annette and John Christophers, will explain “The History of Pottery”, and give everyone the opportunity to have a go at potting! After lunch, our afternoon session will begin at 1.15pm with presentations on Local Initiatives, an overview of what’s going on in the voluntary sector in your community. Find out about the Co-op’s support of local projects, Plastic Free Hay and the HayDay Café to name just a few of the many. The day is open to everyone, at £5 for members and £7 for visitors, and we hope you will come and join us at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. For further information, phone 01497 821 595.
