“I have advertised in Wye Local for several years now and it’s resulted in many local customers using me; I do not need any other advert! Wye Local is THE magazine for finding whatever it is you need locally, whether it’s a plumber or an evening of classical music. It also has some good articles, is very easy to use and I wouldn’t go a month without it!” Jenny Martin, Raise The Curtain
Welcome to our October issue. Autumn is here for sure and I am thrilled. It’s safe to say we had a good summer, plenty of sunshine to enjoy. But now it’ll soon be crisp mornings, the leaves are already on the change, my slow cooker is out and working magic and the fire will get lit increasingly often – autumn is my favourite season, can you tell? New advertisers join us: AutoFinish Bodywork Specialists, page 2. The Assembly Rooms, page 2. Bee-Spoke Quilts, page 3. Atrium Hardwood, page 4. Please do show them your support. This month’s testimonial (see left) makes me so proud. Next month we’ll have been going 12 years, so to receive Jenny’s email really was rewarding. The hard work of the team, the contributors, the continued support from local businesses and of course you, the readers, have shaped a superb community magazine for this area.Thank you. This month we’re launching our first ever photo exhibition – come along on Friday 5th October, enjoy some nibbles and a drink. See page 23 for more details. From page 26 you’ll see some great ideas for the upcoming party season. For me a party is about good company, quality food, too much booze and ending the night with a dance! For Christmas shopping ideas for the more organised among us, read on from page 32. I appreciate you may not find all your gifts locally, but local is a good place to start. Money spent locally tends to stay local – keeping our high streets alive, providing local jobs, services, etc. Don’t forget to support the Black Mountains Lions Bonfire & Firework Extravaganza on Sunday 4th November this year – see page 9. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Cariad and me.

New in Town: Jacqueline Seymour of Bee-Spoke Quilts Where are you based and what’s the area in which you work? I have a sewing room at my home, with beautiful views over the Wye valley. My customer base is world wide. I have shipped quilts as far away as Australia and America as well as selling locally. I am building up local teaching venues, to date: Whitney-on-Wye, Ledbury and Brecon. Why the Hay area? I recently moved to this area and draw inspiration for my designs from the creatures and stunning countryside which surround me.There is also a wide range of craft events available for exhibiting. Why did you decide to open this business? The name of the business came from being a keen bee-keeper at my previous home in Lincolnshire. Bee-spoke Quilts arose from popular demand for my quilts. My passions for sewing and colour are combined in the creation of unique handcrafted quilts.Teaching workshops have evolved as a result of many requests to learn this craft. I teach all levels of quilt making, from beginner to advanced. What are some of challenges you encountered? Taking the initial step to exhibit at a big London craft show (Country Living), was daunting, but well worth it. People need to see and touch my quilts to fully appreciate their quality. Many commissions followed as a result of the show. What do you wish you had known before you started? Starting a craft business is a gradual process, with a steep learning curve.A good working knowledge of using social media for marketing is essential. Is this the first business you have launched? Before running Bee-spoke Quilts I worked for the NHS. I have been able to transfer skills from my previous profession, especially in the area of teaching. A whole new life of creativity has been unleashed since starting the business. What type of education or experience helped you to open this business? I have a longstanding background in all kinds of sewing, starting with dressmaking.
Over the years I have attended quilting workshops and built up my expertise in this specialist area. I developed my own style and designs, often featuring animals or country scenes in vibrant colours. I have a flair for combining fabrics which compliment or contrast with each other and this gives the quilts strong visual impact. I found the organisation WIRE (Women In Rural Enterprise) very helpful with business advice. Describe a typical day in your business: I’m not sure there is a typical day at the moment, as I am new to the area. Usually there is a mixture of drawing new designs, sewing, networking with other crafters, organising teaching sessions, not forgetting…riding my horse! Any advice to new businesses in this area? Get out there and meet other like-minded crafters; this lovely area is bursting with them!

Local Talent: Thomasin Toohie
Where did you train or gain experience? I trained at Hereford College of Art (BTEC in Small Studio Practice) and Hull University (MA in Painting).
Type of artist? Painting and ceramic artist. Range of products? Narrative paintings and ceramics (photos: top, Bath Crescent lamp and right, Stasis). Price range? £150 to £1,200. I sell work in the Art Shop, Abergavenny, and Rostra Gallery, Bath. I also sold ceramics in Liberty London for many years. How long have you been an artist? I’ve been drawing and painting since I was a small child.
Artist statement: I am an artist and musician living in Hay. My paintings, ceramics and song-writing all have a common thread running through, which deals with spirit of place. I work in oils mainly, enjoying the viscosity of the paint. I am a member of the Welsh Group, an exhibiting group founded in 1948 who have a touring exhibition around Wales at the moment. My ceramics are slab built sculpted and I am interested in the 3D painted surface having a painterly quality. I teach painting classes in Hay and Talgarth and have an exhibition of work at the Globe in Hay starting on Friday 5th October.

Get to really know... Hannah Sampson Hannah Sampson is a veterinary surgeon and partner at Hay Vets along with her husband Barney and partners Guy and Kate Platt. Hay Vets is a family-run, mixed practice, and Hannah loves being based in this part of the world. Place of birth? Hereford. Where do you live now? On a small-holding a couple of miles outside Hay. Marital status? Yes, to Barney (also a vet and a partner at the practice). Occupation? Veterinary surgeon. Children? Two primary school age daughters. Pets? One dog, nine chickens, two guinea pigs, three calves and two ponies. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Bagpuss. Are you a collector of anything? See ‘Pets’ above! If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? A cat, living with a loving owner, with no other pets to irritate me or compete for attention. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? Dr Dolittle’s ability to talk to animals could come in handy. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Coffee! What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? Things to do tomorrow. Do you believe in ghosts? No. Most exciting thing you’ve won? I VERY rarely win anything. But my dog was ‘Vet’s Pet of the Month’ for a pet food company last November. Does that count?! Two lessons life has taught you? 1) Be kind and be honest. 2) Exercising every day makes me a nicer person to live with. What makes you grumpy? Being hungry, being tired, and sometimes other people! You’re given one million pounds, what do you
spend it on? Pay off the mortgage, then three months touring around South India with my family. Have any bad habits? I swear too much. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Mess, lack of attention to detail, being inconsiderate towards others. What book would you recommend to others? Addlands by Tom Bullough. Best present ever received? If I said an electric pencil sharpener, that would reveal my inner geek. But it is brilliant. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: I’m not good at completing jobs (but great at starting them!). This drives me (and probably others) up the wall. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? If it were safer, I’d love to travel The Silk Road. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Be a great Mum, Wife, Friend, Colleague and Teacher. Name one regret you have: I don’t really have regrets, I prefer to learn from experiences. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Being bored – I regret that I never appreciated the lack of responsibility. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Becoming a parent. I am so lucky to have two healthy and (mostly) happy children. What’s your favourite song of all time? Blondie – ‘Atomic’. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Dinner with friends. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Either a long walk or run over the Black Mountains with my dog (and the rest of the family if they’re not going to moan about climbing hills). What would be your dream job? I pretty much have it. Being woken up to treat emergencies in the middle of the night is horrible, but apart from that I do love clinical work and the variety it offers. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Nothing yet, but it’s not yet lunchtime! Sum yourself up in five words: Nosy, positive, assertive, kind, funny.

Energy levels low? Are you anxious? Pain that won’t resolve? Boundaries unclear?
“I have had one session of heart healing with Julie so far and it has been a positive and profound experience of deep healing over the last month or so. The healing process has brought the old and misaligned to the surface where with a new and invigorated flow of energy from the healing session my body has been able to process and release this, leaving me feeling so much lighter in mind and spirit. It hasn’t been easy processing certain ‘baggage’ that has been hidden away and stored in my body but it has no doubt been weighing my heart down for too long. There has been quite a shift and my emotions and energy now flow so much easier, I feel lighter, brighter and energised. I look forward to my next session and the workshop in November!” Rosie, Hereford

NEW – Glasbury Artists Group
3rd Friday of each month from 19 October, 5–7pm Glasbury Village Hall We want to explore the possibility of setting up a local artists group across different genres, meeting once a month, to provide an opportunity to share information, develop ideas for joint working to promote work through events and activities, present/ show artworks or artworks in progress for friendly feedback purposes or to use in whatever ways the group feels appropriate. compared to them. One of the other parents tends to grow more at seaside locations – commonly in dunes although it also can be an arable weed. These are “Pansies” because they hold their side petals up – whereas the closely related Violets that we are used to seeing in the spring have them down at the side of the flower. Many of the common names of the past were to do with love – eg “Love and Idleness” or “Love in Vain” and the name Pansy is derived from the French pensée – thought. That word is still used for the flower in France.
Field Pansy
Other old names refer to the face-like look of the flower – eg “Three-faces-under-a-hood” or “Cat’s Face”.
If you are walking a footpath alongside a cultivated field in October this is one of the little gems you might see, growing as an agricultural weed. It is an ancestor of many of the garden pansies but is quite a tiny flower
John Crellin
Viola arvensis
The Welsh name “Trilliw” means “three hues” many Pansies have three colours in the flower often in a more spectacular way than for this one - which has cream, yellow and blue.

I’ve got your back Hot on the heels of last month’s article (‘The 3 phases of menopause’, which, judging by the many requests for my handout was thoroughly needed!)... I’d like to follow this with one on bone health as they are closely associated. Oestrogen is essential to female bone health because it promotes the activity of osteoblasts, (cells that produce bone). As Oestrogen levels plummet during menopause, the osteoblasts aren’t as able to as effectively produce bone. But we CAN take measures to prevent or reverse this, even if you’ve had a diagnosis of Osteoporosis (or Osteopenia, the stage before it). Here, selective exercise is medicine:Your own- body weight bearing is key. Swimming and cycling, will NOT serve your bones in this instance.Weight training will. For general bone health (preventative), a good programme of compound exercises (whole body – less isolative) works well. If you’ve already had a diagnosis (and depending on WHERE you may have lost density), there are certain exercises you must avoid – certainly to start with. (Forward flexion/spine degeneration for example). At the same time you must not fear exercise and weights. Seek professional help here. Balance work is also really important, working in
lots of planes. This will strengthen proprioceptive muscles giving you a sense of self-awareness in space, reducing your chances of a fall. I run a class specifically for this which also uses weights. (Athletic Pilates on Tuesday). Research indicates jumping is far superior to walking or even jogging, (possibly due to the repetitive nature of the latter). And it’s a bone by bone thing.Weighted squats will protect the legs but do nothing to help the density of your wrists, say. (‘Wall falls’ will though!).What to eat? Briefly: Calcium, protein and Vit D (sunshine too), as well as potassium, magnesium, and zinc. Dairy products are good BUT calcium is also in dark leafy greens and many other non-animal sources. 6-8 PRUNES a day are GREAT! They’re rich in polyphenolic compounds, assisting bone building, contain boron which stabilises and extends the half-life of vitamin D, improve oestrogen availability and reduce calcium loss. The vitamin K in the prunes also influences bone health by helping to improve calcium balance. Need more? Ask for my Bone health fact sheet. gymandtonichay@gmail.com Article supplied by Cat Wyllie-Fox, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Remember Rosemary?
Rosemary has long since been recognized as a plant that can enhance memory; this could because of all the phytochemicals it contains. In particular carnosic acid, which can fight off damage by free radicals in the brain; the dried leaves of Rosemary can contain upto 3% of this acid. It can also be used to warm and soothe those tired muscles; use it in combination with eucalyptus in a hot bath with added salts. A fabulous choice for use in skincare as it has refreshing, regenerative and toning properties. It is also an immunostimulant (stimulates the action of the immune system). The essential oil is distilled from the leaves and flowers and must be used diluted. It has GRAS status (generally regarded as safe) but do avoid if pregnant. Just pure essential oils scent all Castello de Haye soaps.

How did books from your childhood feed your imagination? Artist Tessa Waite will be in residence at The Story of Books at 20 Castle Street in Hay during October and she invites you to bring along a childhood book – or the memory of it – that shaped you in some way. Each book or memory will be recorded as part of a blog and will form an archive for others to share. Tessa will be using mixed media including collage, mono print and ink to create her own ‘picture books’ based on those brought or sent in to The Story of Books. Visit Tessa at The Story of Books in Hay-on-Wye each Thursday this October, 10am–5pm, or send in your memory of a childhood book to: Tessa Waite, The Story of Books, 20 Castle Street, Hay-on-Wye, HR3 5DF. Also this autumn at The Story of Books: Workshop: Drawing for Books with Lizzie Harper (Friday 12 October). Exhibition: #NoWords - a celebration of wordless picture books (from Saturday 27 October). Songs for Silas The Village Quire have a brand new show for 2018 & 2019 – Songs for Silas, inspired by the novel by H.E. Bates, My Uncle Silas. Silas was a lover of drink, food, the ladies and good company, he told lies, got the better of his fellow men whenever the chance offered itself, used a scythe like an angel, was a wonderful gardener, took the local lord’s pheasants, and yet succeeded in remaining an honest, genuine and loveable character. Silas had the vividest memory and all the other natural gifts of a fine story-teller in the oral tradition. The Village Quire’s Songs for Silas are inspired by his stories. The new songs and arrangements for Songs for Silas have been written for the Quire by Dave Newell, and Silas’ tales – some taller than others – will be read by actor Janine Sharp. The show is on Saturday 27th October, 7.30pm at Glasbury Methodist Church, Cwmbach. Tickets £7.50/£5 (under18s) to include refreshments, from 01982 560 219. More information online at www.villagequire.org.uk and www.songsforsilas.org.uk.

Our first ever photo exhibition!
You are invited to our first LOCAL LANDSCAPES
We have been producing a Local Landscapes Calendar since 2009. Ten years on, we’re excited to be holding our first ever photo exhibition. Six talented photographers have made the 2019 Calendar possible – as a way to say thank you to them we have invited them along both to showcase their images included in the Calendar and to display other pieces of their work. These stunning photos will be available to buy, framed and unframed. We’ll be launching the exhibition on Friday 5th October, 6pm–8pm at The Globe at Hay. Please join us – you can meet some of the six photographers, and pick their brains about how they managed such superb shots. Perhaps you’re an amateur photographer yourself and would like some tips or location advice? All the images were captured on our doorstep in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

FOCUS ON
Sugar Loaf in the Snow by Claire Young
Photographer name: Claire Young. Where do you live? Coalpit Heath, South Gloucestershire. Occupation? Local Councillor. Amateur or professional photographer? Amateur. How and when did you get into photography? I started taking snaps aged about 10, but I really got into photography when I was a student in the 1990s. I was doing some freelance magazine journalism and needed slides to go with a travel story I was doing. I couldn’t afford an all-singing, all-dancing auto-focus SLR to take them so I got a manual one, which forced me to learn the basic principles of photography. From that point on I was hooked. What is your favourite local point of beauty?
There are so many beautiful spots to choose from in the National Park. The views from Y Grib (also known as the Dragon’s Back) are stunning on a clear day. There’s a patchwork of green fields to the north, to the west you have the central Beacons and the ridge itself is rocky and interesting. On another day I might give a completely different answer - approaching Pen y Fan from Cwm Llwch in the snow perhaps or one of the many beautiful waterfalls. Top tip to other local photographers: Even the most popular spots have less-well walked routes to get to them, so try those out to get a different viewpoint. Anything you’d like our readers to know about you? I love hill walking - it’s a real chance to get away from the stresses of every day life and get on with some photography. I regularly visit the Brecon Beacons National Park with my sons to climb the mountains or visit waterfalls.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Emma Baker-Jones, ESB Leather Emma Baker-Jones set up ESB Leather in 1989. After nearly 30 years she’s still producing top quality leatherwork – her primary customers are dog owners, horse owners, livestock owners and anybody who needs a really good leather belt! What made you set up the business? I was part way through my City & Guilds Saddlery training and there was potential locally for a saddlery making and repair service. We’d always had horses at home to hunt and compete so it seemed a natural progression...except you never find time to do your own repairs! Over the years, with demand, my range of leathergoods has hugely diversified and grown so I’m now making many types of dog collars and leads, traditional show halters for cattle and sheep, hard wearing belts and many interesting and varied commissions in addition to saddlery. Where are you based? I grew up and started my business in Lyonshall but have been based in Letton since 2001. My business is not confined to the local area though, since the internet has brought me many customers from all over the UK and around the world. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? This has always been a really difficult one! In theory yes, but then I’d need to employ more leatherworkers or saddlers to produce the leathergoods but then that wouldn’t be my work I’m selling. I’m a skilled craftsperson so it’s very much my work I’m promoting and selling and not a range of identical mass-produced items made by numerous people. Fortunately, I’ve reached a point where I can earn a living working full-time, doing something very enjoyable and satisfying. Do you need to do any annual training? No, but there are short courses specialising in aspects of leatherwork which can add an extra dimension. You never stop learning, through experience and experimentation. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? It’s really difficult to maintain a work/home life balance and there’s no such thing as a regular 40-hour working week when you are running your own business. What is your ideal job/client? Somebody who appreciates quality and the amount of time, care and skill that goes into making a hand-crafted piece of work. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Still being in business after nearly 30 years! Seriously though, reaching customers around the globe and
some pretty high profile ones here in the UK. I have made numerous pieces for various film companies like Warner Bros, some well known actors and some top competition horses. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? The internet, without doubt. I have had a website for many years which has made my work accessible to people anywhere in the world. List five goals on your business to-do list: 1) Have a gallery for displaying my work. 2) Move to a larger workshop – my current one is very organised but so tiny. 3) Take regular time off and spend more of it with my family. 4) Overhaul my website. 5) Complete a short course in another area of leatherwork, possibly box-making. Name one regret you have about your business: The damage this type of work has caused to my hand and wrist joints! Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been asked about making bondage gear! It used to be a bit embarrassing in the early days but it’s quite amusing really – and no, I have never made any! What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? A gentleman removed his old belt to try on a new one from my display while at a show one day, his trousers promptly dropped before he could secure them. Funny for me, very embarrassing for him, poor chap. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? I have a great website where all my standard range of leathergoods can be seen and purchased securely online. It’s full of useful information, including how to care for your leather and details of all of my shows through the year. I also make to commission and have had some very interesting ones, in addition to the film work and made to measure bridles for horses! I’ve made a bespoke shoulder strap for a hurdy-gurdy, guitar straps, rifle slings and a set of commemorative belts for the British Olympic eventing team in 2008, working together with renowned Sterling Silver buckle maker, Ed Wiltshear. Many of these commissions can be seen on www.esbleather.co.uk. Sum your business up in five words: Creative, satisfying, challenging, rewarding, unique.

Many colours of Tourmaline can be found in Brazil...and the most rare colour is blue/green.
Fossil of the month: Iron Meteorite
“Come & see us for a warm and friendly welcome. An earthly experience in time and space.” – Jurassic Dave 2 Broad Street, Hay-on-Wye HR3 5DB | 01497 820 950
Often found in Campo del Cielo in Argentina, where the highest concentration of Meteorite is recorded. There is no known formation. When cut and polished there is a pattern of oblongs and squares. When the Spanish Conquistadors invaded, they discovered that the indigenous people had a far greater understanding of the origins of Meteorites than they did. They also knew these rocks came from the sky although they never witnessed impact.
Collection of the month Three beautiful brass ornate jugs from Tibet and India. Very unusual with intricate designs such as Dragon handles. A very large wooden hand carved tray with a beautiful Patina. Two wooden kegs with metal studs and strips. Well worth looking at.

Caledonian Market
The name ‘Caledonian Market’ was originally used for a market selling miscellaneous second-hand goods, which was frequented by bargain hunters in London at the beginning of the century. Our local Caledonian Market will take place at the Market Hall, Brecon, on Saturday 3rd November at 11am. For the admission price of £1 you can hunt for bargains yourself. Last year the Market raised nearly £11,000 for charity, from items donated by local people. If you have items to donate, for collection please call 01874 636 246. Anything that has a sale value will be accepted, apart from beds, large-scale furniture, old TVs, videos and tapes. Collections can be made from Monday 8th October until Wednesday 31st October. The Caledonian Market is a fantastic opportunity to dispose of unwanted items and pick up at a pittance something that you want or need.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Recent weeks have been a time of transition for many in our community. As summer gave way to the heavier dews of autumn, some families were getting ready to walk a junior member to school for the first time. In our case, it was also the first start of a brand new school year for the pupils and staff of Ysgol y Mynydd Du and it is heartening to witness the positive learning environment being fostered at our new area school. At the same time, the first cohort of Year Six pupils from Ysgol y Mynydd Du have made the move to Gwernyfed High School. I’m sure you will join me in wishing them well. I can recall the mix of anxiety and anticipation that accompanied me on my way to start high school, back in 1976, following another vintage summer. Many established pupils also returned to high school or progressed to college with an array of GCSEs and A Levels to their credit – and they, their parents and teachers can be justly proud of their achievements. The first weekend of September also saw the launch of the highly successful Free Spirit Festival of Country and Western Music, organised and promoted by Cath and Mark Bufton-Davies and family and held at Trefecca Road, by kind permission of Mr and Mrs Aubrey Morris. The event saw many fans coming from near and far, and raised an impressive £1,500 for the Brecon Branch of Credu, the Young Carers’ charity. It was no mean achievement to raise such a sum from the first event of its kind in Talgarth – and I understand that there is already considerable interest in a similar event next year. As well as thanking everyone who attended, Cath and Mark are grateful to all businesses and individuals in our area, who helped sponsor the Free Spirit Festival, in cash or kind. The coming months will see a major programme of infrastructure investment in Talgarth. The next phase of the Flood Alleviation Scheme is already taking shape, led by Powys County Council, with Welsh
Government support. In addition to this, the long awaited sewer upgrade along Bronllys Road is to start this autumn, with the contractors’ compound to be based at the former Council Yard from late October. There will be details of the lengthy closure of A479 Bronllys Road in the press and online. The works are due to commence in early November, running well into the spring of 2019, with a break over the Christmas period. I have impressed upon Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water the vital importance of engaging directly with our community, especially adjacent householders and businesses, to minimise the disruption caused during these essential works. The Brecon Beacons National Park Authority consultation on the Development Brief for the former Mid Wales Hospital is of great importance to our community and I welcome the decision of the National Park’s Chief Executive, Julian Atkins, to grant an extension until 15th October, so that all parties have the opportunity to participate. The relevant consultation documents can be found at: http://www.beacons-npa.gov.uk/planning/draftstrategy-and-policy/consultations/ In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please don’t hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, via Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or Twitter @WmPowell2016. Alternatively, you can come to my next Advice Surgery at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre to discuss any issue that is troubling you. On this occasion, it falls on Thursday 4th October from 4pm – no appointment is necessary, but advance notice is sometimes useful, if the issues you wish to raise are complex. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best wishes, William

News from Hay Castle Trust
Scaffolding at Hay Castle The scaffolding surrounding Hay Castle is the biggest structure ever built in Hay-on-Wye, soaring 22 metres high. It comprises over 90,000 feet of galvanised steel. It’s surprisingly beautiful, too, with its symmetrical criss-crossing design. By the way, those elements are called tubes – not poles, sticks or rods – and are connected with scaffold fittings called sleeves, swivels and couplers. Normally, a scaffold over four metres high would be tied to a structure for stability. The most challenging part of this job, says Network Scaffolding commercial manager Garyn Lucas, is that it is not tied to the building at any point. Hay Castle is a Schedule Ancient Monument and is Grade 1 listed, therefore the scaffolding cannot touch any part of the building; it is built entirely freestanding using kenteledge blocks and scaffold buttresses. The impressive structure will support a HAKI system temporary roof over the mansion to enable construction of a new roof and insertion of steel support beams and the bronze clad staircase. Scaffold building is notoriously hard work and labour intensive. The CISRS qualified scaffolders are fully trained in basic independent scaffolding erection, and must be able to understand the complex designs. There are two gangs of six scaffolders on site and working at dizzying heights, each with a leading chargehand. The scaffold erection will take 10 weeks to complete. It will be dismantled in late 2019 and will be reused on the next job. Can you guess how many metal tubes have been used to scaffold Hay Castle? Send your best guess to info@haycastletrust.org and you could win a Hay Castle hard hat.

Newss from
Kirsty Williams
Back in August, I became aware that Powys County Council’s Cabinet is considering removing the green waste recycling banks from our towns, to be replaced with a ‘paid-for kerbside service’. Currently residents have a choice of using the green waste banks, from where the cuttings go into compost; or buying orange plastic bags from the council, which are collected and sent to landfill. I try to find out the views of constituents before a policy decision like this is made to ensure their concerns are taken into account. A poll on the plans on my Facebook page attracted hundreds of responses. Nearly 90% of respondents were in favour of retaining the green waste banks, which shows that they are really valued. But there also needs to be kerbside collection for people who are unable to get to, or are physically unable to use, the green waste banks; and it would be far better if the kerbside collection could in future be recycled instead of going to landfill. I understand there will be a Council-run consultation on the proposals in November and I’ll make sure that all the comments I have received are fed into it. Now I know many people are sick of hearing about Brexit. But as the point of the UK’s departure from the EU (29th March next year) fast-approaches, the extent to which vital areas of our everyday lives are linked to the EU becomes clearer. Healthcare is a good example, from our reliance on staff from the EU – many have already left, leaving 10% of NHS posts unfilled – to the supply of organs for transplant.Taking that issue as an example, since 2009 the EU has operated a transplant exchange system to enable organs to be quickly matched to a patient and moved safely across international borders. In that time transplants across the EU have increased by 17%, saving and improving thousands of lives. There is a real risk that the UK may cease to be part of this and the many other shared healthcare systems when we leave.Yet these huge issues have received scant attention either in the media, or from MPs at Westminster, who should be concentrating on these matters, yet too many of whom seem more interested in their own careers than preparing the UK for these life-changing events.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
The country will be leaving the European Union in under 200 days. This may sound like a long period of time, but the days will pass extremely quickly. Over the past two years every minute detail of the negotiations has been splashed across the national press on a daily basis. Opposition parties have done all they can to undermine the Government’s position and some parties have openly campaigned to prevent the people’s decision to leave. In such a turbulent period of national change it would have been good to see all parties unite behind the vote and improve the Governments chances of a successful deal with our European partners. The Government’s Chequers deal has been criticised by both sides of the debate and I understand that there is concern with many elements of the Chequers proposal. I myself have concerns with parts of the Prime Minister’s proposed deal and will be working with colleagues from across the House to ensure the deal is achievable and respects the result of the referendum. Over the coming months there will be dozens of votes in Parliament and I will be keeping you all informed on the way I vote in my monthly column. However, alongside our withdrawal from the European Union myself and other MPs will be voting on various domestic policies. Since the 2017 election the Government have pushed a radical environmental agenda to cut the use of plastics across the country and we have banned microbeads at the start of this year in order to protect marine life. Parliament has passed various pieces of legislation such as the Secure Tenancies (victims of domestic abuse) Act, Armed Forces (Flexible Working) Act and the Digital Economy Act. All these laws will specifically help the people of Brecon and Radnorshire. Over the coming months the Brexit negotiations will be reaching their finale ahead of the transition period. I will continue to support the Government throughout this period and hope politicians from across the political divide respect the electorates decision and help to ensure we get the best possible deal for the UK. As we have seen recently with the horrifying attack in Salisbury, working with our continental partners is essential in areas such as defence and security, if we are to ensure we can adequately keep our nation safe in the future from both foreign and domestic threats.

News from... News from Black Mountains Lions Steam & Vintage Rally We had a great day at the Hay-on-Wye Vintage Rally in August. Steaming and hooting all day! Our stalls went well despite the weather forecast which threatened heavy rain all day. It stopped raining as soon as the gates opened and started again just as we were packing up for the day. It didn’t keep the crowds away though, and all were determined to win a tombola prize or a little lion. Thanks to everyone who visited us and ‘had a go’, and to all who helped on the day.
Firework and Bonfire Bonanza This year we will be celebrating on Sunday 4th November at Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro Court, HR3 5LE. Gates open at 5.30pm. Entry fees: £4 per adult, £1 per child. Bonfire will be lit at 6.30pm and fireworks at 7pm. Come along and enjoy a great evening with refreshment stalls, schools Guy competition, tombola, and lots more to make your evening special. See you there. News from Drover Cycles Back to school, back on your bike With a new school year underway, have you thought about more active ways to get your little ones to class on time? Cycling can be a brilliant way to do the school run. It’s a fun way to start the day and parking is no hassle. Even a short journey counts towards the recommended 60 minutes of daily activity for your child and of course adults get the benefit too. According to research, regular cyclists have the same level of fitness as an average person who is a decade younger, and riding a bike can help you manage stress and mental health issues, too. Remember the sense of freedom and independence cycling gave you as a kid? What a worthwhile thing to pass on to the next generation, and a great feeling to enjoy and share with them. If you’d like to find out more about options for cycling
with children, pop in to Drover Cycles for a chat. Seats, trailers, tagalongs and cargo bikes can accommodate children from as young as 12 months. What’s more, brilliant bikes are available these days for youngsters who have the confidence to ride to school on their own two wheels. When your child has outgrown his or her bike, we’ll happily take it back in part exchange, saving you money and ensuring your son or daughter always has a safe and enjoyable ride. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club At our August club meeting we were greatly impressed with our young speaker Sophie Gray, who gave an informative talk and presentation on animal welfare relating to the tourist trade. Sophie is very passionate about the care of animals – her grandmother Gloria and the rest of her family are very proud of her achieving a first-class degree in zoology. Sophie has spent time hands-on volunteering in Fiji and Thailand to further her knowledge and experience. Our next club meeting will be on Wednesday 24th October, 2.30pm–4.30pm at Glasbury Village Hall. Raffle and tea and biscuits later. Small items donated for prizes always appreciated. We hope to have a Table Top Sale on Saturday 20th October. If you would like a table please give us a ring. Set up 9am, open for trading 10am–12 noon.Tables £5. On sale: cakes, bric-a-brac, books, etc. Raffle and prizes. For more information ring Gloria on 01497 847 726 or Judith on 01497 847 274. increasing numbers of students in the school wanting to take part in the world’s leading youth achievement award. The D of E awards provide challenging, fun and rewarding experiences and are highly valued by employers and universities alike. News from Hay Markets Hay Market, held every Thursday throughout the year, is a mixture of indoor and outdoor stalls with a varied range of traders. The Market has been trading for over 700 years: it is a vibrant local market that is the heart of Hay! As we wave goodbye to the summer and say hello to autumn, rain or shine we hope that you all continue to support your local market. Come to visit, come to socialise, come to eat, come to shop and come to enjoy! News from Timbuktu Hay2Timbuktu sent condolences to our friends in the Malian city on the death of Khaira Arby. She has been described as the Queen of Saharan song, a singer, songwriter of International fame who was outspoken during the exodus of musicians from Timbuktu when it became overrun with Islamist terrorists in 2012. Khaira was forced into marriage at the age of 16 by her father who sought to suppress her music ambitions but she used her voice to highlight the injustices facing young women and encouraging young women in Mali to become musicians. 40 years since her forced marriage, H2T works with girls and young women in Timbuktu, supporting them to continue their education, delaying marriage and early child bearing and giving the girls opportunities to express themselves, make their own decisions and achieve their potential. Construction to install new toilets and improved sanitation for girls has started with further stages planned as funds allow. .Funding raised in Hay through personal donations, Hay Festival events and collections has been enhanced by pupils in Clyro Primary School who used the Toilet Project to focus on health and hygiene at home, in school and in Timbuktu. Soap made and sold at the school Enterprise Day resulted in a donation for toilets in Timbuktu.Thank you to Clyro School and to all helping H2T with this valuable project. News from Hay Town Council
August in Hay started with a bang as we enjoyed the WW1 commemoration weekend. Huge thanks to all those who took part and particularly to Kelvyn Jenkins and his team for organising the event. We are already looking forward to 2020 and the WW2 event! Later in the month the Kingdom Project held their taster weekend as a showcase of things to come next year. As a Town Council we are particularly pleased to support this ‘not for profit’ project which will bring events into the heart of the town over the August Bank Holiday next year. There will be plenty of opportunities for residents and businesses to get involved as well as to attend events. The most recent event to take place was one organised by us; a drop in Meet the Council evening at the Swan Hotel. Every household in Hay had an invite so the turnout was a little disappointing in terms of numbers. However, those who did attend prompted lively discussion and questions and we thoroughly enjoyed meeting you all. Looking forward, October sees the return of the Walking Festival with a variety of walks and some interesting and free evening presentations. News from U3A Hay Have you seen the wonderful tapestries by John Piper which hang in Hereford Cathedral? What do you know about them, and the other works of this famous artist? At the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 16th October at 10.30am, guided by Canon Sandy Elliott, we will explore the life and works of this prolific artist. A 20th-century English painter, printmaker and designer of stained-glass windows and both opera and theatre sets, his work often focused on the British landscape, especially churches and monuments, and included tapestry designs, book jackets, screen-prints, photography, fabrics and ceramics. After lunch, our afternoon session will begin at 1.15pm when we will continue the artistic theme and show the rare DVD of The Illuminator (2005), the story of the creation of the St John’s Bible for Minnesota University. This was the first handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned since the invention of the printing press, and Royal Calligrapher Donald Jackson and Hereford Calligraphers were part of the team who were involved in this huge undertaking, with beautiful results! The day is open to everyone, at £5 for members and £7 for visitors. Please do come and join us at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. For further information, phone 01497 851 228.

HOWLS update The new Hay Library is bright and spacious. Bookshelves have been installed throughout the whole space. But it’s only open 12.5 hours a week (because Powys cut the budget) and is unavailable most afternoons as it’s used by an after-school club. So Welsh Assembly Member Kirsty Williams convened a meeting in August with representatives from HOWLS (Hay-onWye Library Supporters), the school Governors, Hay Town Council, and Hay Festival to try to move things forward. The outcome is that new opening hours will be trialled from 1st October; a sliding wall is being installed to divide the community/library space and talks are ongoing with Hay Festival about additional funding. It’s great we still have a public library in Hay – and it’s not just about books, there’s lots going on from family story time on Mondays to computer sessions on Thursdays, so call in if you haven’t already! Hay Library opening from 1st October 2018: Mondays and Thursdays: 10am–12.30pm and 1.30pm–3pm; Fridays 1.30pm–6pm and Saturdays 10am–12.30pm.

POETRY PAGE
Land Of My Fathers By Susan Warne The land of my fathers is precious to me It stirs in my bones from my family tree It brings tears to my eyes as those voices do swell Reciting those words that I know so well It conjures up pictures of green rolling hills And those heralds of Springtime – wild daffodils And ladies in shawls wearing oh such tall hats They look just like witches, but minus the cats The streams and the valleys which echo the past The coal and the slate mines now peaceful at last The castles, once strongholds of English power The legends and myths like that of Glyndwr But that fire breathing dragon all covered in scales Wherever I see it reminds me of Wales!
