“We took over as Jackson & Gill Opticians nearly 8 years ago and have advertised with the Wye Local ever since as we felt it was the ‘go to’ magazine for everything you need in the Hay-on-Wye area. We have always been delighted with the service and feel that our business has benefited from the local advertising. Thank you, Wye Local!” Felicity Gill, Jackson & Gill Opticians

Welcome to our November issue. Wye Local started a whopping 12 years ago! Over that time, my stepson has grown from toddler to teenager and I’ve had two successful IVF treatments with two extremely characterful children to show for it! The team has grown from just one (me) to myself and eight others with three delivery teams. We’ve launched two other monthly magazines, one family magazine and the annual calendar that has been going for 10 years! I wonder what the next 12 years has in store for us at Cariads Local Ltd. The Party Time feature returns on page 26. Within the feature you’ll see some local businesses who can help you look your best for that special occasion. From page 38 you’ll find the Local Producers and Christmas Shopping features. Buy from that small producer this Christmas. Buy handmade. Buy from people you know. A great way to keep money in the local community and of course find that unique gift. Thank you to everyone who’s made these 12 years pure joy! From team members to readers, contributors and advertisers. And of course I wouldn’t be here without the help and support of my family and friends. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x

BUSINESS PROFILE

Cariads Local Ltd – 12 years old! When was the business started? Wye Local launched in Hay-on-Wye in 2006. What made you set up the business? I’d worked in the printing world since I was 16 years old. I’d briefly worked in Sales, one job selling mobile phones, another selling advertising space. So I felt I had the skills needed to set up Wye Local. Hay had a lot going on, a great high street and ample tradesmen/women but there was nowhere affordable to promote events or services. Expanding to cover Talgarth several months into the launch worked extremely well. Do you have ambitions to grow bigger? Right now, no. Earlier this year I separated from my husband, so now it’s about finding the right family and work balance. The children are getting older and I’d like them to get involved into local clubs and classes. Do you need to do any annual training to keep up to date? As a team we get together every quarter to see if we can improve our service, consider if we can include any new features, and listen to what our readers and customers are saying. We welcome any feedback, good or bad. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? 1) If something doesn’t go to plan, just take a deep breath and decide how you’ll solve it. Don’t panic, there’s always a solution. 2) Delegate, delegate, delegate! At first I thought I had to do everything myself. Now I delegate to a team member who can often do it better. We all have our strengths and weaknesses – it’s important to realise what these are. What is your ideal customer? A positive/happy one. Just as in life generally, I’m all about surrounding myself with positive vibes! What is your greatest achievement in your business? Working around my young family and meeting deadlines. I have a 14-year-old stepson, a 6-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son. When one of the children has been up all night projectile vomiting, it’s tough. I’m sure other working parents reading this will relate! Many of us do it and when we nail working and parenting, for me it feels like the best achievement ever. As a team, if one of us is struggling, we all chip in to ensure we meet our monthly deadlines. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? A wonderful, loyal team. Back in 2006

it was just me. As the magazine grew and I decided I wanted to launch other publications, I took on my first team member, Clare, in 2008. Now, in 2018, Clare is still putting up with me, along with Davina (accounts), Robert (events and deliveries), Jess (design and proofing), Laura (sales and proofing), Nicole (design and admin), Gill (credit control), Max (sales) and three small delivery teams. List three goals on your business to-do list: 1) Grow Local Ludlow. Five issues in, we’re getting good feedback. Ludlow has a super community feel so I’m sure it could be as successful as Local Beacon and Wye Local. 2) Move our three monthly magazines onto a new magazine software that will make us more efficient from sales through to accounts. 3) Throw a party! I had planned to do this in 2016 when it was our 10th anniversary... but I temporarily moved to Shanghai. Perhaps we’ll wait until our 15th anniversary... Name one regret you have about your business: I don’t. If we’ve done anything that’s received bad feedback, I or one of the team correct it. Life’s one big learning adventure. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? Multi-tasking with a hint of delegation. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? On numerous occasions people have thought Clare was my mum! Even more so in the early days as my maiden name was Williams. Clare liked people thinking she was the boss! Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? I suppose just that we want to help local businesses. We work with businesses, we don’t just take your money for the advert and run. We like to offer features to accompany your advert – this promotes you further and it makes our magazines unique and interesting to the readers, so it’s a win-win. What do you know now that you wish you’d known before starting your business? You are always representing your business. So a night out, a few ciders on board, you’ll always bump into a customer and have to snap into ‘professional Lisa’. Sum your business up in five words: Friendly, helpful, affordable, informative, LOCAL.

Local Talent: Sue Thorne glass. The craft of stained glass allows me to use my painting skills, incorporating my love of the countryside with birds and small animals finding their way into my work.

Type of artist? Glass artist working in fused and leaded glass, often combining the two, specialising in traditional methods of painting on glass. Range of products? From single freestanding painted glass pieces to leaded and fused pieces for the window sill through to architectural use.

I experiment with ways to ‘draw’ in glass, taking my skills from the paper onto the glass. I layer the glass, using the cut line to create movement. I use moulds to shape the surface of the glass to create form and texture. Slumping the glass over the mould creates light refraction, bringing the work alive. Many of my pieces are fired three times to create the desired effect. It is the combination of fusing techniques with sandblasting and glass painting that excites me and leads me to discover new ways to work with glass. It is light that brings the pieces alive just as it does in the landscape.

Price range? ÂŁ50 upwards depending upon the job. How long have you been an artist? All my life. I remember the days of art homework and it being the most important and time-consuming homework of the week. I was so keen to get a good mark. Where did you train or gain experience? I trained at Bognor Regis Teacher Training College to be an art teacher first of all, but always regretted not going to art college. I taught alongside bringing up my children until they were teenagers. This was when I took the plunge and went to Hereford College of Art to do the Portfolio course; this led to my discovery of the medium of glass, and I was hooked. I followed up the two years part time at HCA with the same again at Swansea Metropolitan University, gaining an MA Glass in 2011. Since then I have experimented and found my niche in the glass world. Artist statement: I am a local artist with a passion for the mountains and the natural world. The landscape fills me with awe, the ever-changing weather affecting the mountain vista provides me with endless inspiration which I strive to capture in

Get to really know... Marion Hughes Marion Hughes works for Sheppard’s Plumbing and Heating/Sheppard’s Construction (two companies under one roof) in Talgarth. From Llanigon, she is a country girl at heart, and if you have ever been to Llanigon Show, you will no doubt have heard her commentating on the showjumping! Place of birth? Brecon. Where do you live now? Painscastle. Marital status? Married to Chris four years, although we have been together 24 years! Occupation? Accountant. Children? Not two-legged ones! Pets? Yes – 3 dogs, 2 ponies, 1 cat, ducks and chickens. Are you a collector of anything? Well... nothing in particular, but it’s surprising what I have in the shed! If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? My pony – he has everything he needs, he has a far better wardrobe than me and has new shoes every six weeks! If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To make myself invisible. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? Morning already?! What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I love my bed! Do you believe in ghosts? Yes. Most exciting thing you’ve won? Tough one! But I guess the thing I’ve been proudest to have won has to be the Large Part Bred Section of the Welsh Pony & Cob Performance Show (we were also Reserve Supreme Champion and the Best Exhibit in Powys at the same show) – it was a weekend I will never forget. Two lessons life has taught you? Be kind and never judge a book by its cover. What makes you grumpy? Being tired. Teenage crush? Didn’t really have one. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? I don’t really know. Have any bad habits? Who, me?

Which bad habits drive you crazy? People sniffing – blow your nose! What book would you recommend to others? Anything by Jilly Cooper. Best present ever received? My pony. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Be a bit more organised. If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Canada. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: 1) Be happy, 2) Be healthy, 3) See the Northern Lights, 4) Watch the Calgary Stampede, and 5) Spend more time with my family. Name one regret you have: Life’s too short to have regrets. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Being carefree. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Being able to drive. What’s your favourite song of the moment? ‘The Sound of Silence’ – Disturbed. What’s your favourite song of all time? I don’t really have one. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Curl up on the sofa with a G&T, and the dogs of course, watching a good film. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Go for a long ride on the hill with my pony and dogs. Have any hidden talents? Not that I know of. What would be your dream job? Is there one? If you had to change your name, what would you change it to? I have many nicknames, so I guess I don’t have to change it? What have you done today to make you feel proud? Made someone who was down laugh. Sum yourself up in five words: Practical, determined, loyal, willing and slightly bonkers!

Hay Festival Winter Weekend Hay transforms into a festive playground of ideas for Hay Festival Winter Weekend later this month. Candle-lit storytelling, comedy, music and family workshops combine with the best of the town’s seasonal shopping and the famed natural surroundings, 22–25 November 2018. Now in its 19th year, this year’s Winter Weekend will be the most ambitious yet, blending literary conversation, immersive performances and family workshops. Building on the success of last year’s record-breaking edition, the festival incorporates a new 500-seater marquee in the Cattle Market and a pop-up bookshop space, while using The School Hall and St Mary’s Church for additional events. Vintage fashion, fine foods and seasonal crafts share centre stage in the town’s market square: the Hayon-Wye Christmas lights are switched on Friday 23 November, Hay Food Festival takes place Saturday 24, and Hay Does Vintage on Sunday 25. Peter Florence, Director of Hay Festival, said:

“Hay offers a festive welcome like nowhere else. We’ll be throwing our arms open to writers and readers from around the world to experience Hay as never before. The town is decked in Christmas lights and glistening with winter cheer. We’ve great writers, inspiring thinkers, moving musicians, and a thrilling bazaar of local crafts, foods and curiosities. Join us.” Novelist Jeanette Winterson said: “It’s the time of year we need some internal sunshine and that’s what this is. It’s a place where there’s light and there’s warmth and a lot of fun.” Tickets are on sale now at hayfestival.org or on 01497 822 629.

find it on a roadside verge or in a hedgerow though – and, where it is found, it might well be mistaken for a moss. But, as the picture shows, this little plant does have veins to carry water and nutrients. Mosses are more primitive and lack well-developed distribution systems. These ferns (there are two closely related species that grow in this area) are dependent on a damp environment and so are found clinging to rocks in permanently wet places such as the gorges our waterfall country streams flow through. Below the north face of Pen y Fan is another area they can be found – in rocky crevices that never dry out.The leaf is only one cell thick and so cannot survive drying conditions at all well.

All ferns pass through a stage where a very damp environment is essential as they develop – with the ubiquitous Bracken being the best adapted to drier conditions. John Crellin

Hay Junior Football Club I have recently taken on the role of Hay Junior Football Club Chairman, and have reviewed the situation of accounts and the long term goals of the Club. An awful lot of work is to be done to raise funds for us to achieve financial stability and put a robust, forward-thinking structure in place. The aim is to link the club to a professional football club, for example West Brom, Aston Villa or Cardiff. This will give local talent an opportunity for trials along with training days with the clubs, etc. I will also be aiming to take the Club on tour to Holland or Spain in two years’ time, as these countries play junior football competitions for all age groups.

develop the children’s football. We are running the following fundraising event and would love you to join us and help us achieve our goals: Prize Bingo at the Baskerville Arms, Clyro – Saturday 24th November, eyes down 2pm. Football age groups start at under 7s and run to under 12s. New faces welcome: anyone wishing to become a coach please contact Hay Junior Football Club. Wishing you all the very best and hope to see you at one of our events. Article supplied by Steve Jenkins, HJFC Chair

Junior Football Club training wear such as tracksuits will be provided to wear for travelling to games, etc. In order to continue to deliver a good level of training, I am looking at developing coaches with further training with the FAW. This will improve and

Overview & breakthrough! We often hear about ‘balance’ and ‘moderation’. It’s a good call. ‘A little of what you fancy’ really does do you good (because if we didn’t factor in some good times, we’d never stick to ‘the cause’, and life would be dull, dull, dull!). But where to draw the line? With my PT clients – as I get to know them and we monitor their habits (be this what they eat and drink, how well they sleep, or how often they exercise), there is often a vague notion of what needs to be done, but no real inquiry made of their lives. I know this is tricky at the best of times. Life is fast paced. Demands are made. Deadlines need to be met (I’m trying for that now!) and quick choices to be made. BUT without looking over what you’re doing and determining where you’re heading, you may find it’s suddenly all out of control. I don’t just mean gaining ‘body fat’ (to be honest, I’m not so interested in that as a stand-alone issue now, because I recognise that is only a very small part of the larger picture). I mean that you’re TOO stressed, tired, malnourished, ill. And finding it hard to claw back (this may well manifest in

the feeling bloated and overweight scenario).Without the ‘mindfulness’ of where you’re heading and taking enough time over the many daily decisions impacting your health, you might find the slippery slope getting steeper. Many Novembers ago, I dedicated a large space on a wall in the Gym to clients’ A4 posters. The idea was that they would be held to account all over stodgy Xmas and into January! They posted: their picture, Body Composition Analysis results, and what they were trying to achieve, then the whole thing again in January, to mark results. I had 25 uptakes (it was free!). The most surprising thing? The ladies who did this, almost without exception, didn’t need to! I learnt from this. They were ALREADY ‘overviewing’, already taking responsibility by the act of DOING it (and presumably already in good shape/health as this was their mind-set already). So slow down. Breathe. Determine where you want to be. Ask for my info sheet ‘Overview’), full of tips to help you. Article supplied by Cat Wyllie-Fox, Personal Trainer, Gym & Tonic Health Club

Candlelit Christmas Concert

The festive season draweth nigh and The Village Quire brings a mellifluous mid-winter garland of delights for your delectation this Yuletide. Looking forward with a melodious bouquet of new tales and songs, they are also delving back into the midwinter traditions of this isle with ditties and stories of mumming and wassailing, folklore and frolics, misrule and mirth, rousing West Gallery anthems and delicate harmonies to melt your heart. Now the land is in thrall to the wind and the rain, the ice and the hail and the snow. But here we are snug and warm and as our candle flames flicker we know that the time is now, and the time is right to cry, ‘Out With the Old!’ Saturday 1st December, 7.30pm, in All Saints’ Church, Cwmbach, Glasbury-on-Wye HR3 5LR. Ultimately it is for other people to judge. If Professional where did you gain experience: I worked as a photographers assistant when I left school and have worked in the film business ever since. Top Tip to Local Photographers: Try not to imitate what other photographers do, the most important thing about taking pictures is the person doing it and why they are doing it. Anything you would like our readers to know about you: I once went to India and bought a camel and crossed The Great Thar Desert on it. It was fantastic. Website: www.elphoto.co.uk

REVIEW

A Splash of Colour in Black and White at The Crown Inn, Dilwyn

There’s nothing I like more than a roast Sunday lunch. I was delighted when we were invited by proprietors Maria and her partner Max to visit this half-timbered 17th century inn in the beautiful rural parish of Dilwyn. Dilwyn is one of the attractive villages on the historic North Herefordshire Black and White Village Trail. It was the first day after the invasion of the nasty Storm Callum so after checking the state of the flooding of the roads en route (on the Hay Community Facebook page) we loaded up the wellies and wet weather gear into the car and off we headed. Thankfully it stopped raining while we were on the way… The atmosphere was buzzing and the dining room and bar were bustling with locals and visitors alike. Maria gave us a lovely warm welcome and poured us both a glass of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. Later we chose a bottle of Rioja. Two of Maria’s three sisters, Lisa and Anna, were helping her out. Sibling number four,Vicky, works at The Grapes in Leominster. Prices for starters vary between £4.50 and £5.50. Main courses range from £8.50 to £13.95. Great value. All desserts are £5.50 and the cheeseboard is £6.95. Roast topside of beef, Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, a fabulous selection of mixed vegetables and gravy was my choice.Tender and tasty quality beef, with plenty of vegetables which I like. Horseradish sauce too. Robert’s choice was the excellent roast shoulder of lamb with mint sauce and the same excellent vegetables. The lamb was full of flavour. I’ve heard that the locals and farmers around here are delighted that Maria and Max are here. I bet!

Vegetarians, dairy free and gluten free diners are well looked after. To learn more about the pub and to see sample menus do visit their website: www.thecrowninndilwyn.co.uk. The Tiramisu cheesecake was well presented and absolutely divine. It came with raspberries, a sliced strawberry and a Cape gooseberry, all with a lovely sprinkling of icing sugar. I let Robert taste a spoonful. He liked it just as much as I did. After I had finished I was going to try some of his cheese and biscuits, a good sized selection of Worcester Hop, Stilton, Scrumpy and Brie. This is what we had agreed. However, he neglected to leave me any of it! “Oops, forgot” he said. Next time we visit I’m going to give the rosemary and white chocolate panacotta a go. Max is Italian and therefore many of the dishes are Italian inspired. One of the starters on the lunch menu was Gorgonzola roast mushroom, and one of the main courses is Lasagne Alla Bolognese. Looking forward to our next visit already… We managed to have an interesting chat to both Maria and her sister Lisa when lunch service came to an end and soon realised that both the girls are well travelled, interesting and knowledgable. They exude an air of charm and intelligence. We also learned that in 2012 the Crown Inn made the news through becoming the first Parish Council owned pub in Herefordshire and is now run by Maria with partner/chef Max as a tenanted free house (as of August 2018) offering traditional country inn style food and drink. It is also a real ale pub. During our visit the sun came out. Storm Callum was definitely over. I was delighted as it gave me a chance to go outside to get a photo or two. The Crown Inn is open all day long, every single day. Do visit. The service, atmosphere, owners and food are a delight. Thanks very much, Maria and Max. Gill Perkins Photography Gill Perkins is a local photographer based in Peterchurch, Hereford. Her lifelong love of photography and her affinity for countryside and animals is demonstrated in the mood of her artful photographs. A stunning portfolio of prints and greeting cards, including images from a recent trip to see the Camargue horses in France, are available in a number of local shops.Visit her website www.gillsgallery.co.uk or find her on Facebook for upcoming venues. More recently, Gill has been using her computer skills to transform photos into professional artist sketches. This came about a number of years ago, when she was asked if something could be done with a picture of a dog that had long since passed away. Gill managed to transform the image into an artistic sketch that delighted the owner, and realised that there was a market for this type of work.

Fossils | Crystals | Books Local Art | Jewellery Beautiful unusual gifts and treasures naturally found or inspirationally created. Birthstone for November: Citrine A variety of quartz. Oxidized iron impurities create the characteristic golden-yellow colouration by gently heating. Amethyst crystals will also turn golden, this can also occur naturally. Whatever its origin, it is considered to be a healing stone effective in increasing self confidence and the achievements of personal goals.

New in Town: Jonathan Spencer of Artizan Creations Where are you based? I have opened a new jewellery workshop and showroom at The Courtyard in the centre of Hay-on-Wye. It will be open 5 days a week to visit for jewellery and repairs. Why the Hay area? I have recently moved to the area from Birmingham as my girlfriend Ellen is based in Bronllys. Hay-on-Wye seemed the ideal place to me, in fact The Courtyard seemed most perfect – I knew of it as it was previously a shop I’d love to look around, searching for my other passion, retro glass! I love Hay-on-Wye, out of all the local towns it felt the most creative. I can imagine my creativity reaching its full potential here. What type of education or experience has helped you to open this business? I trained at Birmingham’s School of Jewellery for 3 years, passing all qualifications and winning awards. I have worked in Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter for 25 years, working for the most established, high-quality goldsmiths the trade has to offer. I decided to open my own workshop 15 years ago and have continued to handcraft jewellery for some of the world’s leading jewellery companies.

by hand or using the latest cutting-edge technology. Making one-off bespoke items is what I am most passionate about but I can also restore old jewellery to look brand new again and recraft old items to become something completely different to how they started their life. I also offer gold and silver jewellery ranges and will be showcasing local jewellers’ ranges in my showroom. What excites you about your new venture? I am really looking forward to becoming part of the Hay community, the challenge of a new shop and liasing with local craftspeople.

What do you specialise in? I offer a bespoke design service for wedding and engagement rings, enabling my clients to design rings to their own requirements. I also specialise in repairing and restoring old jewellery. Describe a typical day in your business: I start the day with a large coffee and open my post to see what the day holds. A typical day would involve liasing with clients to discuss their jewellery requirements, working at my bench fulfilling repair jobs, and designing and making bespoke jewellery commissions. What services do you offer? I can produce jewellery

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth At the time of writing, families and businesses across Wales and the west of the British Isles are recovering from the destructive force of Storm Callum. At the same time, our Prime Minister and her senior ministers are engaging in a hectic programme of shuttle diplomacy to Brussels and other European capitals, in an attempt to unblock the current impasse over Brexit terms with representatives of our 27 EU counterparts, ahead of the final deadline for a Brexit Deal – or No Deal. Whatever the ultimate outcome, it serves as a timely reminder that, in spite of the turbulence and problems that we, as individuals and nations, bring upon ourselves, nothing can trump nature, when it comes to its sheer force and potential impact. On this occasion, Talgarth was mercifully spared the worst, but other Breconshire towns were badly affected and lives were lost in Carmarthenshire and across the land. This time of year is always poignant, as we recall in Remembrance those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our nation. This year, of course, the intensity of emotions will be all the greater, as we come together in various events to mark the 100th anniversary of Armistice and the end of World War One. As well as the Talgarth Regeneration Group’s Homecoming Ball in Talgarth Town Hall on Saturday 27th October, for which preparations are at an advanced stage, there are also several significant events in November itself. Firstly, South Powys Veterans Groups are organising an Armistice Centenary Commemoration on Saturday 3 November, 12pm–2pm, at the ‘Marking Time’ Woodland Walk, in the grounds of Bronllys Hospital and afterwards at the Hospital Chapel. The event is supported by Powys Teaching Health Board, Bronllys Hospital and Community League of Friends, the Bronllys Well Being Park (CLT) Ltd and the Powys Armed and Ex Forces Forum. As well as involving members of the armed forces

– past, present and future – and their families, the hope is to reach out to the wider community. The traditional Remembrance Sunday service takes place from 10am on Sunday 11th November at St Gwendoline’s Church, at Talgarth War Memorial at 11am and rounds off with a service of blessing of the World War One memorial plaque in Talgarth Town Hall by our Parish Priest, the Rev Canon Rowland Edwards. All are welcome. In recent weeks, several charitable fundraising events and initiatives have taken place, which deserve to be recognised. Firstly, #TeamDrew raised over £10,000 in the Cardiff Half Marathon to support paediatric chordoma research through the Drew Barker-Wright Charity, with supporters running in memory of three-year-old Drew BarkerWright. The next fundraiser for this worthy local charity is the Halloween Fun Run, which is due to take place on Wednesday 31st October from 7pm at Talgarth Mill. Those interested – or who wish to make a contribution after the event – should contact sarah@talgarthmill.com. In both cases, the organisers deserve our recognition and our support for their sterling efforts. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 2nd November from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. No appointment is necessary, but advance notice is sometimes helpful, if the issues you wish to raise are complex. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue which may be troubling you. Best wishes, William

News from Hay Castle Trust Amazing Gates The ancient gates of Hay Castle have overlooked the town for many hundreds of years, although in recent years they have lain hidden behind fencing, overgrown vegetation and a large timber prop. One of the key elements of the project to restore Hay Castle involves the conservation of these impressive gates. Recent research has shown that one side probably dates to around 1640 (around the time the mansion was built), while the other may date to the mid 1300s. Back in September each nine foot oak door was carefully packed and padded, then lifted from its pintles using a small crane. The gates were then transported to the workshop of conservators John Nethercott & Company in Discoed near Presteigne. The team is renowned for its work with ancient wooden pieces and they are held in high esteem nationally for their experience and skill. They have worked on the great oak doors at Chester Cathedral and the Royal Apartments in Edinburgh as well as panelled rooms, churches, doors and furniture across Britain and Europe. The team will expertly and sympathetically restore the gates. Small areas of degraded wood will be replaced, the hinges and straps will be cleaned, and steel pins will be inserted to strengthen the gates. Once the project is complete the gates will serve as a new entrance to the castle, welcoming visitors up steps from Hay’s market square. The gates are extremely rare and the number of defensive gates surviving in situ in the UK is tiny. We have something to be very proud of and to celebrate when they are returned to the gateway following restoration.

Storms - I hope you and your families are OK after the recent storms. The heavy rain and high winds made for treacherous conditions right across Brecon and Radnorshire, and it will be some time until all the damage is fixed. I’d like to place on record my thanks for the work of the emergency services and others who helped people cope in terrible conditions. Also a personal thanks to the fire crew who helped remove several inches of flood water from my constituency office late one evening. Rural Schools - Last week, as Cabinet Secretary for Education, I launched the “Rural Education Action Plan”.This is the first time the Welsh Government has had a specific strategy to help schools in rural areas. Reforms in the new action plan include: a Small and Rural School grant to encourage innovation and raise standards; a new ‘E-sgol’ project that will use video technology to connect classrooms so that pupils from one school can join classes at other schools remotely, a strengthening of the School Organisation Code in respect of a presumption against the closure of rural schools, and additional funding to improve connectivity in rural schools.

I recognise the challenges of delivering education in rural areas and am proud to be implementing these changes to help our children have the best possible start in life. Universal Credit - In October, full Universal Credit (UC) service for all claimant groups was launched in Brecon and Radnorshire. The Jobcentres included are Llandrindod Wells, Brecon and Ystradgynlais. Universal Credit will replace, ChildTax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), and Working Tax Credit. People need to be aware of the changes because where UC has been rolled out in other areas there have been major problems with rent arrears, increased referrals to food banks and many other issues. I am very worried about the impact these changes will have on some of the most vulnerable people in our society, so please alert and try to help people you think may be affected.

News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

With conference season now over, it has been a real eye opener as to what direction the major political parties want to take the UK in. Labour’s conference showed just how far away the party hierarchy has come from its voter base in places like the valleys of South Wales which overwhelmingly voted for Brexit in 2016. With the party now looking at the possibility of rejecting the people’s vote of 2016 and holding a second EU referendum in the hope of getting the result they want. Labour politicians openly called for increasing corporation tax by 50%, supporting a general strike and even nationalising the internet. These calls show just how out of touch Labour are with the electorate on the major issues facing our country. Since 2010 the Conservatives have radically cut corporation tax, helping businesses of all sizes to put their hard earnt money into employing new staff and improving their businesses. Compare this with Jeremy Corbyn’s vision which would suck money from our economy and put thousands of jobs at risk. All because Labour believe their Government know how to spend taxpayer’s money better than taxpayers themselves. I believe the Conservative Party Conference offered a more positive, realistic vision of Britain, a country that has had five years of consecutive economic growth, a country that despite the negativity of many over Brexit, has the highest levels of employment on record, especially for women and young people. The media only focus on Brexit, but the Conservative Government are getting on with the day job of running and improving the country, whilst simultaneously negotiating our successful withdrawal from the European Union.

News from... News from Black Mountains Lions Club Firework & Bonfire Extravaganza Event to be held this year on Sunday 4th November. We are sad to announce that this will be our last firework event. Unfortunately those members that have been collecting the ingredients for the bonfire, building the bonfire, setting up the fireworks and lighting them, building the stalls, installing lighting and catering, are all feeling the strain. We want this last one to be special, so come along and enjoy an extra big event! Includes the Schools Guy competition, various refreshments, lightsticks, win a Lion draw, and much more. Gates open at 5.30pm. Bonfire lit at 6.30pm. Fireworks at 7pm. Entry fees £4 per adult / £1 per child. Members of the Black Mountains Lions come from all walks of life and every penny we raise goes towards helping people in need. We will continue with all our other fundraising activities and to serve our local community. If you feel able to spare just a small amount to time to help then please – we want to hear from you. Join us and have some fun. Contact Cheryl on cherylhyde@btinternet.com or 07413 399 950. News from Fairtrade Hay Roll up, roll up to Fairtrade Hay’s Christmas Fair on Saturday 24 November, 10am–4pm, in the Buttermarket, part of the Winter Weekend, and buy gifts from ethical small businesses. The ninth Christmas fair run by Fairtrade Hay is a good opportunity to find out how you can make a difference. Talk to the stallholders while you browse, and enjoy hot drinks and cakes sold by Hay, Brecon and Talgarth Sanctuary for Refugees. Original presents to buy include jewellery and leatherwork (Jump4Timbuktu), artisan crafts from Colombia (Wati Collective), foodie gifts from Palestine (Zaytoun), and textiles and children’s gifts (Dragon’s Garden). The local Fairtrade group is this year applying to renew Hay’s status as a Fairtrade Town and aims to encourage more local traders to sell products

that help producers in emerging countries to earn a fair wage in good working conditions. Drinking great coffee and eating delicious chocolate is a start, and there is a lot more you can do just by choosing how to spend your money. Help to make trade fair this Christmas and in the year ahead at Fairtrade Hay’s Christmas Fair, when there will be plenty of good cheer to celebrate the start of the festive season. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Well, we can have the fireworks, and then I suppose we are eventually forced to consider our plans for the Christmas season. Our Christmas lunch will be on Wednesday 5th December, and all being well we should know the venue by our October club meeting now past. As input for the magazines is always a month in advance, I haven’t the answer yet. Hope many of you will decide to come. Our November club meeting will be on Wednesday 28th November at Glasbury Village Hall, 2.30pm– 4.30pm. We hope to have Heather, the lady who made the lovely Christmas displays last year, for a return visit. Guests are welcome. Raffle and tea later as always. Again, small items donated for prizes gratefully received. Just to let you know, our Macmillan Coffee Morning made £161.Thanks to all who helped on the day, and donated cakes and money in the pots. Many thanks also to Geraldine Cleary for the use of her home. For more info, please ring Gloria on 01497 847 726 or Judith on 01497 847 274. News from Hay Chamber of Commerce As we move ever closer to the end of the year we are now in full fundraising mode here at the Chamber of Commerce. We know how much local businesses and residents value having a magical display of Christmas lights every year, but it does cost a lot of money to make it happen. After the success of our fabulous promise auction (which raised over £1,700 – thanks to all who took part!) we’re now planning more events to help fund the Christmas cheer. Please take a look at the Chamber website (hayonwyechamber.co.uk) for details of how you can make a contribution – any amount is very much appreciated. The Chamber exists to support all businesses in the

town, but we’re especially pleased to welcome a new arrival to the enviable list of Hay book shops, in the form of Green Ink Booksellers. Josh and Ellen have done a wonderful job of transforming the previously empty shop, and it is a real vote of confidence in the town that they have taken this step. Of course, Josh, is also deputy chair of the Chamber so perhaps we are biased! But we wish them every success. The Winter Weekend programme is now available, and we are looking forward to kicking things off in style with the switching on ceremony which will take place on Friday 23rd November from 5pm to 7pm. The big countdown will take place at around 6pm, and we’ll have a celebrity guest as well as one of Hay’s local heroes on hand to do the honours. We hope you’ll join us for some mulled wine and mince pies! News from Gwernyfed High School What to do when you don’t know what to do: Advice from the youngest MP in Wales by Eva Lantos (sixth form) Thinking about what you want to do with the rest of your life can be quite a daunting prospect. There are just so many options, and so many more ways of attempting to achieve these options. And sometimes you just struggle to find anything that feels right – to find anything you want to spend the rest of your life doing. It’s a lot of pressure. A lot. And this really isn’t a minor problem – it might reassure you to know that statistics from ‘All About Careers’ have revealed that 44% of undergraduates are not sure what industry they want to go into. Ben Lake, a Plaid Cymru politician, is, at 25, the youngest Member of Parliament in Wales. He had absolutely no idea what he wanted to do in sixth form, and still no idea about his future career when he was studying at Oxford University. After listening to one of his talks on success which he gave at Carmarthen University, I emailed him asking for some advice for sixth form students and he said his best guidance was to chase down your passions and interests: “Whether contemplating a degree topic or potential career, it is so important to consider what it is that you really enjoy doing; university study, or working life will be a lot easier, more enjoyable, and a great deal more fulfilling if you can match your course or

vocation with your interest or passion. It may sound simple, but the pressures on young people today are huge, and often force you to take the path that you think you ‘should’ do, rather than the one you ‘want’ to take. We should never expect anything in life to be easy, but providing that you do your best and work hard, you won’t go too wrong.” This advice is extremely important as a study in 2017 revealed that 84% of 16–24 year olds with interests they’re very passionate about aren’t pursuing them as their career. The politician says his personal inspiration comes from, “The closeness of the communities of Ceredigion, which motivates me politically.” The importance of chasing what you enjoy was reiterated once again when Lake explained, “Once you have this understanding, you will have found both the fire that will drive you and the compass points that will help guide you.” The MP also reiterated the fact that we are all our own “hardest critics”, saying the soundest piece of advice he could give was “to be kind to yourself.” In a world where so much pressure is put on young people to succeed, the politician says, “It is so important, however, to remember that we are only human, that mistakes will be made, hard lessons will be learnt, but in the end, with hard work and perseverance, any challenge can be overcome.” News from Haygarth Medical Centre Why does the receptionist need to ask about your symptoms? It is not a case of the receptionists being nosy. The reception staff are members of the practice team and it is part of their job role to ask you if you can give them a brief idea of why you would like an appointment. The information you give is helpful in directing you to the appropriate clinician for a triage call. The receptionists are trained to ask certain questions in order to ensure that you receive: •

The most appropriate medical care,

From the most appropriate health professional,

At the most appropriate time.

Receptionists are asked to collect brief information from patients: •

Talgarth Surgery: 01874 713 000 Hay Surgery: 01497 822 100 News from Hay & District Dial-a-Ride Volunteering – What does it mean to be a volunteer driver for Dial-a-Ride? We asked Richard Gardiner, Trustee and Volunteer for his views. “I have been driving for Hay Dial-a-Ride for nearly five years now. I started driving in part because I had recently moved to Hay and it seemed to be a good way to explore the area and how attractive it is. Driving the minibus along some of the narrow back roads is an achievement in itself (and I’ve never got completely stuck) and you get to appreciate the scenery and how it changes through the seasons. In addition it is interesting to meet the clients, all of whom are friendly and chatty, and discover their range of life experiences and lifestyles. It is good to see how they get to know each other as some of our clients are either geographically or socially isolated. Dial-a-Ride also run social trips and I have driven groups to the National Botanic Garden near Carmarthen and the Hop Pocket Shopping Village near Bromyard. These trips are always a great success and enjoyed by both the clients and by me, the driver. In terms of time it is not demanding – I normally drive one morning or afternoon each week with extra half days every so often. Some drivers do

more shifts (and some less) – it’s up to the driver. I arrange my shifts with the friendly and helpful staff at the office. Finally it’s good to give something back to the local community. The service we provide is appreciated and I’ve lost count of the number of times our clients have said “I don’t know what I’d do without Dial a Ride.” If you are interested, please call us for an application pack – no experience is necessary and all training is provided. Bank Bus – due to a generous grant from Brecon Rotary Club we have been able to trial a new monthly service to Brecon – the “bank bus”. There will be no banks in Hay from the end of September and many of our members do not do online banking or prefer to do their business faceto-face. We are pleased to be able to provide this service and extend a huge thank you to the Brecon Rotary Club for supporting our charity in this way. The service will run until the end of March 2019 initially, although we are hoping to obtain funding to continue after that date. Fundraising – it was great to see so many people at our Coffee Morning & Jumble Sale in September. We were joined by a new helper, Helen Perry from Barclays, and with Barclays match funding the event raised £1,060 which was our best yet! Thank you to everyone who supported us. Membership is open to anyone of any age who is in need of transport, and who lives within a 9-mile radius of Hay. If you need more information about any aspect of our community transport service call us on 01497 821 616. News from U3A Hay Bread. No, not a revival of the 70s band, nor a slang reference to money! But a study of a staple food prepared from a dough of flour and water, usually by baking. Throughout recorded history it has been a prominent food in large parts of the world and is one of the oldest man-made foods, having been of significant importance since the dawn of agriculture. At the next U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 20th November at 10.30am, guided by Revd. Ian Charlesworth, we will learn more about ‘Our Daily Bread’, how to make it and enjoy it, and of the essential role that bread plays in secular cultures of

Tea at Cusop By a visitor to the HayDay Café Jean, I want to be where you are, sat back there with ease, you sort of make me settle back in this chair with thoughts of tea and cake. So here I am looking fondly at a plate with three, able, table, stable diners.

And I like Dinah.

There is nothing finer than to be in Cusop at teatime.
