Welcome to the first issue of Wye Local in 2019. How fantastic is it to see all those smiling faces on the front cover? This month Clare has collected some great interviews with these (and more) local people. Read all about Roger Clark on page 3. Sarah of Sarah’s Doggy Day Care on page 4. Jaine Wills of Accretion Accountancy Ltd on page 7. Rebecca Lewis, local jewellery maker, on page 30. If you’d like us to interview a local resident or business owner locally, please do let us know. For those who read our Family Magazine, you will have been confused about the 30 hour funded childcare. One minute it was on. Next it was off. Well, I’m pleased to say it’s now on! Read more on pages 14–15 from Little Stars, who have settings in Hay and in Clyro. On page 19, read about local bellringers who lost their lives in service of their country during the 1914–18 war. We have two interesting features for you this month. Parties, Events and Weddings starts on page 20. Try Something New starts on page 32. If you didn’t receive one of our 2019 Local Landscapes Calendars this Christmas – you can still buy them at local outlets until the end of January, or online at www.cariadslocal.co.uk. Next month we will include the Companionship page for one last time. If you would like us to include your details, please refer to our December issue, page 66, and send us the necessary details. Get to really know... Roger Clark Roger Clark lives in Winforton and works at Ashbrook Garage in Clyro. Married to Juliet, he has two children, Charlotte and George. Place of birth? The Manse, Great Oak, Eardisley (mentioned in the Doomsday book – Great Oak, not me!) Pets? Which is an anagram of ‘pest’, which sums up our Springer Spaniel, Biscuit. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Blue Peter (a straw, bike chain, used teabag, teaspoon of cornflour, old car aerial and a frozen pea turned into Tracy Island). Are you a collector of anything? Aches and pains. If you could be any animal, what would you be and why? Eric Burdon (as in lead singer of The Animals) because he could sing and I can’t. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? See into the future. What is usually your first thought when you wake up? What’s for breakfast? What do you usually think about right before falling asleep? I hope I wake up in the morning! Most exciting thing you’ve won? Weobley & District Darts Knockout Cup at the Aero Club when I was Captain of the Sun Inn darts team. Two lessons life has taught you? What goes around comes around and don’t buy the first thing you see. What makes you grumpy? Ignorant drivers. Teenage crush? Suzi Quatro. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? Ensuring my family’s future and supporting my local pubs (more). Have any bad habits? Impatience. Which bad habits drive you crazy? Being late. Do you believe in the afterlife? Yes, I think so, as long as it isn’t Groundhog Day! What book would you recommend to others? I
am too impatient to read books but like to read recipe books, especially Nigella and Delia. Best present ever received? Three beautiful granddaughters. List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: Nothing – I am perfect! If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? Southern Ireland – the idea of buying a pint, a stamp, plans for an igloo, 1lb of butter and a coffin in the same shop appeals to me. List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Watch Liverpool play/finish decorating the house/find a bottle of merlot that never empties/drive a tank and empty the dishwasher! Name one regret you have: Leaving the Fire Service where I made friends for life. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: Special cuddles from Mum, Nan and Aunties. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Being able to go to the pub. What’s your favourite song of the moment? Take That, ‘Out of Our Heads’. What’s your favourite song of all time? More than one – ‘How Great Thou Art’, ‘Hallelujah’, ‘A Fairytale of New York’ and ‘Tiger Feet’. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Watching Match of the Day. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Mowing the lawn. Have any hidden talents? I like to keep them hidden, but do hope I can make people laugh (Dad told me it takes more muscles to frown than to smile). What would be your dream job? Putting cherries in tins of fruit salad because there is never enough! What have you done today to make you feel proud? Got through the day without swearing... much. Sum yourself up in five words: Kind, happy, knowledgeable, generous and alive!

New in Town: Sarah’s Doggy Day Care Where are you based and what services do you provide? I have just opened a new business between Hay and Glasbury. I offer a personal and friendly dog day care service you can trust, including home from home boarding, a fully secured paddock with 6-foot-high mesh for safe off leash play, and adjoining fields for lovely long walks so you can have peace of mind your dog will be happy while you are at work or on holiday. Why the Hay area? I have lived in Hay all of my life; it is a beautiful area, with wonderful people (and dogs) living all around, and I knew it would be a perfect place to set up a dog care service. Why did you decide to open this business? I’ve always loved animals – especially dogs! I’ve studied and worked in the animal care industry most of my life, and realised there was a real need for a dog care service for people who were away at work all day or on holiday. I knew

with my experience with dogs I could provide a fun, loving and safe environment for them and they would return home feeling content and happy. What are some of the challenges you have encountered? The weather! Starting a dog day care service in the winter has its cleaning challenges for sure...mud everywhere! What type of education or experience helped you open and manage this business? I’ve always loved and cared for the family’s dogs, ever since I can remember. With my own dogs Ralph and then Duke, it soon became clear I would find a career that involved dogs. I have a National Diploma, Higher National Diploma and a BSc in Animal Welfare & Management from Harper Adams University. Working for Arwyn and Lavinia Davies at J.A.O. Davies veterinary surgery in Hay over 7 years, I earned a wealth of knowledge and invaluable experience. Also working at the Old Railway Line Garden Centre for over 6 years in the pet department helped me gain insight into people’s needs for their dogs and how I could help advise with health, behavioural and dietary issues. Describe a typical day in your business: Generally it’s EAT.SLEEP.DOGS.REPEAT. In the morning I get up early to greet my dogs for the day, we go straight into the paddock for safe off leash play. We then head up the fields for a nice long walk and play; depending on weather we have a good run around for a couple of hours and head back for a mid-morning snack and a snooze, and when everyone has had a good relax we head off again for some more fun and games. Then we come back in for another rest before heading out for our last walk before it gets dark! I aim for at least 3 good hour walks a day and off leash play in between. It’s all about the dogs, and it usually involves plenty of tennis ball throwing! Any advice to new businesses in this area? It’s quite early for me to give advice, but I would say do what you love, stay focused, be friendly, be passionate about what you do, speak to good people and listen to ideas to build bigger and better things. Don’t let anything get in the way of achieving your goals.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Accretion Accountancy Ltd Jaine Wills set up Accretion Accountancy Ltd to take management accounting out into the wider business community and to fill a natural gap in the market, where accountants tended to focus simply on compliance rather than on wider business advice. The company’s primary customers are businesses who really want to grow but perhaps do not know how, or are ‘stuck’ in some way; businesses that have found themselves in a bit of a mess as well as businesses that are just starting out. What made you set up the business? I have always had common sense and been able to see solutions where others saw only problems, and I successfully solved quite a few when I worked in industry. I then moved into training accountants. The issues identified by the students left me wondering how the businesses were still going. Some were really shocking. I then went back into industry and found even worse problems; I felt I had to do something to help business owners manage their finances and opportunities better, and that my skillset was wasted on a single employer: I had to go it alone. Where are you based? I live in Winforton. However, my client base is widespread. I can work wherever there is an internet connection. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? Yes, I’m not at capacity just yet. I’m finalising a “Start your business right” course to help new business owners avoid the costly pitfalls of getting it wrong at the beginning and I’m working with a personal coach, offering a combined business and personal coaching course. Do you need to do any annual training to keep up your qualification up to date? Like you wouldn’t believe! As a Chartered Management Accountant not only do I need to undertake CPD but I also have additional duties by being a Member in Practice (MIP), which really focus on anti-money-laundering and fraud. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? I am accountable to myself so I have to be amazing! With flexibility to move things around, in business and in my personal life, I find I can get more done in both. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Every day brings challenges when you run your own business. It is claimed that 80% of small businesses do
not see their second year-end and to know that I have helped my clients avoid being a statistic is heartwarming. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? Talking to people. If you’re excited about what you’re doing, your enthusiasm will be infectious and people will want to get on board. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: Adapting to change is key in today’s economic environment so anything I feel needs changing is dealt with before it becomes an issue. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? After explaining a set of accounts to one MD, he said that nobody had ever told him the things that I had, or made it clear, in all his years in business. What would be your dream assignment? I work with Insolvency Practitioners who, in turn, work with companies on the brink of insolvency. Going into these businesses and effectively turning them around so that jobs are saved and the business continues is hard work, but immensely rewarding. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about you and your business? As you may have guessed, I’m not your typical accountant. I don’t just do your yearend accounts and leave you to it for the rest of the year. Before starting the business, I was an accountant in several industries (including working for an American Biotech firm that was instrumental in cracking the genome) and I was a tutor for the country’s largest accountancy tuition provider for ten years. I started my first business when I was 22 and am a business adviser for the Young Enterprise Company Challenge. My School won Best Company and went on to represent Wales in the UK finals in 2015. What have you done today to make you feel proud? I was asked to participate in the new Martin Lewis financial textbook which is issued to every school in the UK. The textbook is now out and I’m delighted to see that my suggestions have been incorporated. Download the free pdf at: https://t.co/90yJqQPbc4. What do you know now that you wish you’d known before starting your business? To multiply everything by at least three: time to get established; funds required; amount of dedication and hard graft. Sum your business up in five words: Interactive, imperative, educational, growing, empowering.

Plant of the Month Charlotte of Hay CYCLAMEN Cyclamen, which grow from flattened bulbs known as corms, are extremely versatile plants that can live happily indoors or outdoors. Outdoors in January the autumn cyclamen for pots, troughs and baskets will have finished their flowering but should still be displaying their attractive, marbled-patterned leaves. They can be planted out into shady parts of the garden in spring and have every chance of flowering again next autumn. In the garden itself the much smaller flowered Cyclamen hederifolium, the ivy-leaved cyclamen, produce their pink or white flowers in August to November and by January they will also be showing off their patterned leaves – every plant has a different pattern. However, it is after Christmas that Cyclamen coum with their heart- shaped leaves start to burst into flower. Both of these species prefer a shady position beneath trees and shrubs and if left undisturbed will seed around and eventually produce large areas of attractive flowers and leaf where other plants struggle to grow well. Indoors in the winter the more flamboyant, large flowered Cyclamen persicum hybrids take centre stage. Their flowers come in all shades of pink as well as red and white; some are frilled, others are scented. They prefer cooler areas in the house and are best watered by placing them for a few minutes in a water tray and then allowing to drain before placing back into their pot covers. They can be kept in best condition by removing yellowing leaves and by twisting off spent flower stalks as low down as possible. Bring some colour to your home and garden with these delicate blooms.

Wild in January
It is a naturalized alien plant that has been known on old walls in West Malling (Kent) since 1882. We came across a close relative, Small Toadflax (Chaenorhinum minus) below Penwllt Quarry in pasture late in August this year. That species is one that has been in the country since at least medieval times. These Toadflaxes are named Trwyn-y-llo in Welsh which means Calf ’s Nose. Our pavement visitor being Trwyn-y-llo Caint (Kent) and the small one Trwyn-y-llo Bach (of course!).
Chaenorhinum origanifolium Malling Toadflax This little flower isn’t native in these parts but has inhabited our pavement cracks and spread quite a long way after escaping from a neighbour’s window box. It can flower at any time of year, providing welcome colour at unusual times of year when conditions suit it.
Common or Yellow Toadflax (Linaria vulgaris) or Llin y Llyffant* – not a “Toadflax” at all in the Welsh - is a slightly more distant cousin and is frequently seen (by passengers) when driving on the A40 through the county in late summer. There is yet another common relative that creeps around many of our town walls – Ivy-leaved Toadflax (Cymbalaria muralis) or Trwyn-y-llo Dail Eiddew. * Frog Flax I think! John Crellin

Hay Walking Festival 2019 In spite of terribly wet and windy weather, the 2018 Hay Walking Festival was an enjoyable and successful weekend, thanks to the efforts of the organising committee (all unpaid volunteers) and support from local businesses, Hay Cheesemarket and Hay Town Council. In fact, it went so well that they’ve decided to extend the festival to make it a fourday event! Dates will be Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th October 2019 and the walks programme will be broad ranging in terms of location, distance and theme. There will be something for all abilities and interests – full day hikes in the hills, town walks, historical and special interest walks, a chance to learn new skills and exclusive access to sites not normally open to the public. A range of evening events will round off each day. Full details will be published on the festival website at www.haywalkingfestival.com, and printed brochures will be available before Easter.
countryside. A significant number of walkers come from far afield to take part and of course that means extra revenue for B&Bs, food outlets, shops and transport providers. So, please do your bit to help them help the local economy by spreading the word about the festival! If you have any feedback or would like to support the festival financially or practically, please contact the organisers on 01497 822423 or email info@ haywalkingfestival.com. The committee would be delighted to welcome more volunteers, walk leaders, sponsors and advertisers.
The Hay Walking Festival is an opportunity for local residents and visitors alike to enjoy our beautiful

Fallen ringers remembered In recent weeks quarter peals, performances lasting about 45 minutes, have been rung in many towers in Britain and elsewhere in honour of bellringers who lost their lives in the service of their country in the 1914–18 war. Those who were members of the Hereford Diocesan Guild of Bellringers are commemorated on a brass tablet in the ringing chamber at All Saints Church in Hereford. They include, from what was then the Clifford District of that Guild, one from Almeley, two from Eardisley and three from Glasbury. There was also at least one other ringer from Glasbury who was killed but who was not a member of the Hereford Diocesan Guild. The four ringers from Glasbury were David Percy Whitall, who was killed in action on 5 May 1916. William Rhys Jones of Pontithel was killed in France on 20 June 1918. William A. James, a signaller with the Royal Engineers, died of bronchial pneumonia in France on 26 November 1918. Austin Hamer was captured by the Germans in March 1918 and died ‘of starvation’ while in hospital soon after his release. The bells of St Peter’s Church in Glasbury were rung,
half-muffled, on 20 June 2018 in memory of W. R. Jones. Half-muffled means that one side of the clapper ball was covered with a leather muffle so that alternate blows of the clapper on the bell sound loud and then muffled. This is the traditional sound of mourning when bells are rung. The music rung included Grandsire Doubles and Plain Bob, both first rung in the 1600s and popular methods at Glasbury before the war. A half-muffled quarter was rung in memory of Hamer. The bells sounded superb on the quiet frosty morning air. When you hear bells ringing please remember the folk who sound them. If you would like to learn to ring please visit your local church on ringing practice nights, where you will be made most welcome. Glasbury practice on Tuesdays from 7.30–9pm. Cakes & Catering
Jan and Lin have a lifetime of experience in the baking and catering industry and started working together in 2012. They combined their knowledge, skills and passion creating a full-time catering business making wedding and special occasion cakes as well as supplying bespoke Afternoon Teas on floral china. When asked to provide a hot meal it was quite a decision to say yes, but they now have many testimonials to prove it was the right one.Working with local butchers and sourcing local ingredients to supply home-made fresh food was another good decision.

Local Talent: Rebecca Lewis Jewellery Type of artist? Jewellery designer-maker. Range of products? Studs, earrings, rings, necklaces, bracelets, brooches and cufflinks. I also carry out special commissions and repairs. Price range? £27 to £400. How long have you been an artist? Since graduating in 2006; so twelve years now. Where did you train or gain experience? I graduated with a First Class BA Honours in Contemporary Crafts from Coventry University. I specialised in metalwork in my second year after work experience at Mike Gell’s Jewellery Gallery in Hereford. This was a turning point for me; when I realised I wanted to be a jeweller. After graduating I was awarded the Alloy Jewellers’ group graduate bursary. The early years are pretty hard going as you need to invest a lot of time and money into your design ideas – creating a style you can call your own. Following a Princes Trust loan and a lot of determination I now have a comprehensive collection of jewellery. After graduating and returning to Hereford I also began working for Mike Gell in the gallery, where I still am to this day. I help run the gallery and carry out commissions and repairs. I enjoy the balance of working in my workshop at home and at the gallery in Hereford. Artist statement: I endeavour to produce accessible, wearable jewellery. My inspiration is taken from antique jewellery and collectables resulting in designs that echo the decadence of times gone by. With a more modern approach I create classic, yet contemporary jewellery designs. Where can your products be purchased? Through my website www.rebecca-lewis.co.uk and through independent craft galleries around the UK: visit my website for a list of stockists. You can also make an appointment to visit me at my workshop near Hayon-Wye. What has been your proudest moment? Being awarded the Alloy graduate bursary is one, but top for me is setting up my purpose-built workshop at home – before this I’d always shared a workshop. I love to
keep a tidy bench and have all of my tools, metal and stones in order – it’s my happy place! What would you class as ‘your masterpiece’? My platinum and sapphire engagement ring with complementing diamond wedding bands. Have you any future plans for your work? I would like to design a new range of work; however this takes time and investment so you’ll have to watch this space. What advice would you give a local artist? Keep doing what you’re doing! Herefordshire has a rich and diverse range of craftsmen and women who we should all shout about! Which other local artists do you admire? Where to start…? Mike Gell, obviously; Wally Gilbert, Georgina Franklin and Sue Lane, who are all highly skilled, meticulous craftspeople.

Losing weight
Last year, five amazing people decided in January to lose weight, get fitter and live the lives they wanted. Between them, Ken, Kym, Mavis, Rachel and Jackie lost nearly 20 stones after joining Talgarth Slimming World. Ken, who has lost 7½ stones, says “my life has changed so much in less than a year. The changes I’ve made to the way I eat mean I’ve so much more energy than I used to. I love to play bowls and can’t wait to get to every match now.” Mavis knows that looking after herself has helped her get through a tough period in her life, while Jackie knew that her good health depended on eating well and losing weight. Helen Furnell, who runs the Talgarth and Hay-on-Wye Slimming World groups says: “From the moment they joined, it was clear their commitment was absolutely 100%. It hasn’t always been plain sailing, and there were times when the results on the scales weren’t what they would have liked, but no matter what, they walked through the door every week, got loads of tips, ideas, recipes and inspiration from their fellow members and, as a result, have achieved their weight loss dreams.”

The 21/90 Rule I met a friend for lunch today. She’s also a new client, LOVING it all, really enthusiastic, throwing herself into three classes a week. I texted her earlier to say she is BORN to do Yoga but just didn’t know it! We talked about many issues – our pets, favourite walks, a very short chat on the joys of shopping in Merthyr, our views on Brexit (joking!)… and then why she’d hesitated to join the Club for three years! Three looong years when she could have been getting fit! HOWEVER.There is no sharper or more galvanising learning curve for me than scrutinising, with a pal kind enough to take the time, and honest enough to share her thoughts; exactly what is in the mindset of those who are hesitant. Because from these observations I can improve my services, and have more meaningful conversations with prospective clients! I think from what we said, that some of the most powerful pointers I have made before but she made some extremely interesting observations. A familiar one first: In essence – to overview what you want long term is essential BUT you then need to
break it all down into manageable chunks. It’s the same as GIVING UP a bad habit, isn’t it? Say you’re ‘doing it for life’ and it seems too overwhelming. Take it one day at a time (if needs be one hour at a time) and it’s do-able. It is said that it take 21 days to make a new habit and 90 days to make a new lifestyle. I’d verify that to be true. So why not try SOMETHING and mark off those 21 days? But what she added to this is: BE KIND to yourself as you do it! Don’t over anticipate results. Don’t measure. And I love this: Go with what you FEEL, not what you see. (Wise pal, right?) Her thoughts over those 21 days were also to be CONSISTENT, but to also make it manageable. Again – this is so sensible. She noted that over those three years she made every single excuse to herself under the sun and that what she really needed to do was critique each one and find answers to them. This is the meaning of mindful isn’t it? See you soon? Article

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth As I write, we are well into the season of Advent and many Christmas gatherings for people of all ages have already taken place in our community. By the time that this New Year edition of Wye Local lands in your letterbox, it will be time to reflect upon the old year and look ahead to the new, with everyone wondering what 2019 holds in store for us, our families and community and those we hold dear. It is naturally also a time when we think of those who are no longer with us – and recall the part they have played in our lives and in our community. 2018 has once again brought with it more than its share of challenges, difficulties and unpredictable events. Our world feels like an even more unstable place, where journalists abroad and those who have found refuge in our own country can be targeted and even killed, with the complicity of governments, some of which we count as trading partners. In this context, the greater the level of stability we can retain in our relations with our Continental friends and neighbours, and the freer the flows of labour and trade that can be achieved, will surely be in our shared national interest. Decisions in Parliament and elsewhere in the coming weeks on Brexit will be critical in determining our future for decades to come. Our own local community has had many reasons to count its blessings again during the past year. We are currently enjoying the wonderful display of Talgarth Christmas Lights, provided by the sheer hard work over many weeks by the Talgarth Lights Group, whose volunteer efforts are second to none. Similarly, the Grow for Talgarth Group has done so much to enhance our local environment during the year and we should salute them for what they do to promote civic pride in our community. The
emerging plans for a Talgarth in Bloom initiative in 2019 also deserve our encouragement and support. These achievements and so many others in the cultural, social and sporting life of our town and its Black Mountain hinterland are based on selfless volunteering and acts of kindness by many in our community. One vital public service locally that is looking to extend its volunteer base is Talgarth Fire Station. Anyone interested in taking up this opportunity should call in at the Fire Station in Cottage Lane on any Tuesday evening, between 7pm and 9pm. Alternatively more information is available via the website: www.mawwfire.gov.uk or by contacting the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service on: 01267 242 636. It would be a really positive New Year’s resolution, if we were to commit ourselves afresh to recognising and saying thank you to those who do so much to enrich our common life. Maybe some of us could also lend a hand, if we have the capacity to do so. There IS such a thing as society. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me on: 07703 112 113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 11th January from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. I will be joined by Dafydd Llywelyn, Police and Crime Commissioner for Dyfed – Powys, who is in our area that day on a series of outreach visits. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue which may be troubling you. Happy New Year William

Substantial archaeological investigation took place prior to work starting and an archaeologist is still required to be on site whenever there is any digging taking place under what’s called a ‘watching brief ’. Archaeologist Peter Dorling has carried out over seventeen investigative test pits in various locations across the site and the findings of these test pits have helped us establish a deeper understanding of how the castle might once have looked as well as giving us clues about the people who lived here over the years. Many finds are broken pottery, or sherds, and some of these date back as far as the 14th century. In the last month, Peter has excavated inside the medieval tower where there once was a Victorian era brick-vaulted wine cellar. Peter found seven perfectly intact and beautiful green glass wine bottles which had been hidden behind the brickwork. It almost appears that someone had been helping themselves to the wine and then concealing the evidence. Maybe the culprit was a butler who worked for Lady Glanusk when she lived in the castle? Another intriguing discovery was a number of pieces of highly decorative glasswork. Initial research suggests that they are Venetian glass from the 15th or 16th century. They are incredibly delicate with intricate and highly elaborate designs suggesting that they were very high status wine glasses. Archaeological work will continue in the burnt out east section of the mansion and around the gate once the scaffolding is removed.

Happy New Year! Blwyddyn Newydd Dda!
With the uncertainty hanging over us with regard to our future relationship with Europe, I detect an air of unease among even the normally calm people and communities of this area. It’s an unease I share, as by the time you read this I doubt that the paths that the UK and Wales will be taking in the coming years will be any clearer. It is often said that history repeats itself. I am reliably told that much of today is reminiscent of the 1970s. From the end of March the UK will be outside the EU as it was then. Public services across the UK are in great difficulty as they were then. Similarly for those that can remember, the political battles at Westminster are imbued with a sense of crisis and the nations of the UK are uneasy and deeply divided over the big issues of the day, as they were in the 1970s.The Festive Season may have disguised it somewhat, but a sense of pessimism and even anger among many people is easy to detect, both in my conversations with constituents and the contents of my email inbox and postbag. That there are increasing numbers of people falling into difficulty is not in doubt. So, one of my New Year’s resolutions is to re-double my efforts as a Welsh politician to ensure that, whatever happens in London and Brussels, those in society here in Brecon & Radnorshire and across Wales who are least able to cope in this time of change, are protected and supported as best they can be. This should be our top priority as politicians, at whatever level we are working, not least because a society that cares for and nurtures its most vulnerable is one most likely to be less divided, more content, more economically successful and bestplaced to shed that sense of fear and pessimism. It worries me greatly that while the politicians at Westminster have been wrestling with the great dilemmas of Brexit, the interests of ordinary people and families across the country have received less attention than necessary, which has fed that sense of anger and frustration. A New Year, even one of major changes, presents an opportunity to ensure that, by our deeds, 2019 ends on a more optimistic note than it began. Best wishes to all for 2019.

The current situation in Westminster has been widely advertised across social media and our traditional media channels such as the radio and TV. I have made various TV and Radio appearances to air my views and have been inundated with letters, emails and messages on social media by constituents asking me to vote a certain way or back a certain individual. I always take the time to read these messages and ask various groups and organisations their views before rushing to a decision, so I thank you all for your engagement and interest in the current political situation. my statements on my Facebook page and website. Due to the media, many would believe that we are just dealing with Brexit and no other legislation or work is being undertaken by MPs. This could not be further from the truth, yes Brexit is taking up time that could be dedicated to other matters, but we are cracking on with the day job of being MPs for you. I continue to meet with local businesses, individuals and organisations across Brecon and Radnorshire and over the coming months I have various surgeries planned. I have surgeries in, Ystradgynlais, Llangynidr, Llangorse, Llyswen, Glasbury, Crossgates and New Radnor. News from... News from Black Mountains Lions Last summer, thanks to the support of the Black Mountains Lions Club who helped fund the trip with a donation of £500, Penry Herdman joined the Jubilee Sailing Trust with the aim of assisting a crew of disabled veterans to sail around the North Island of New Zealand aboard the Tenacious (a tall ship specially adapted to cater for people with all types of disability). Penry was supporting Adam, who sustained injuries in combat while serving in the British Army. After flying out to New Zealand, Penry joined the crew in Auckland and embarked on a 7 day sail around the North Island and surrounding isles. His shipmates for this sail were from all walks of life, including veterans who had suffered injuries during active service. Having never sailed before, he and a group of friends from college learned the necessary skills required to sail a tall ship, from knot tying to feeding the entire crew. During their time on the ship they also learned what life was like for their disabled shipmates and assisted them with day to day tasks. Not only was Pendry presented with a once in a lifetime opportunity, he also witnessed some of the difficulties faced by 15% of the world’s population. In Pendry’s words: “This experience is one I will always treasure and I am extremely thankful to those service men and women who made extreme sacrifices in order to keep us safe.”
Thank you to everyone who came to our coffee morning in Llangorse and to the quiz at The Three Horseshoes in Groesffordd. These were well-attended events that raised £146 and £111 respectively. If you would like to be kept updated about future developments and events, please follow our Facebook page, Brecon to Hay Cycle Path, or email freya.m.morgan@gmail.com to be added to the mailing list. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Our November club meeting at Glasbury Village Hall, the last for the year, was well attended. Heather weaved her floristry magic, creating several different Christmas floral arrangements for a delighted audience. The floral creations were auctioned later. We enjoyed tea after, with special seasonal treats of stollen, mince pies and iced squares of Christmas cake. Then of course our usual fundraising raffle. Club Christmas lunch on 5th December was at The Old Barn, Three Cocks, attended by members and guests who all agreed it was a very good and enjoyable lunch. Just to add to your new year diaries – we start it all again in 2019 on Wednesday 23rd January. We look forward to new members joining us. Have a wonderful Christmas-time, keep healthy and happy! News from Gwernyfed High School As a new year begins, the students at Gwernyfed High School are working hard towards their exams. For our Year 11 students, it is a time for both hard work and for decisions to be made about their future. Here at Gwernyfed, we have an excellent Sixth Form Centre catering for everyone’s needs. The Sixth Form have their own centre based in the courtyard of the Mansion House which includes comfortable sitting areas; a study room providing ample space for students to work in a quiet environments; an IT room designated just for the Sixth Form and a silent working room use by
News from Brecon to Hay Cycle Path Following two successful events we have now secured funding to perform an outline feasibility study of a possible cycle route. This is being performed by Sustrans, who have considerable experience in similar projects. The outcome will be whether a path is possible, what route it might take and what major and minor obstacles will need to be overcome in the planning phase.

News from Hay Chamber of Commerce The start of the year is always a great time for resolutions and forward planning, and we know many businesses in the town will be thinking about the year ahead. However, it’s also a good time to look back on 2018 and all that our amazing, independent town has achieved. Once again, we oversaw the installation and maintenance of the Christmas lights in town. We hope you agree these make Hay a very special place to be during the festive season. We now have lights pretty much throughout the centre of the town, and for next year we’ll be looking at some much-needed technical updates, particularly on the timers, some of which date back to time immemorial. A big thank you to everyone who contributed to our fund-raising efforts this year.
We already have plans in place to make next year even more sparkling. We had our biggest ever Hay Independence celebrations, attracting hundreds of people from all around the world for ten days of events. The Independence team are already planning some very special activities for this April, so stay tuned. Throughout the year, we have been in discussions with the Parish Hall Committee about how the Chamber of Commerce can support them to make this great Hay asset easier to use. These plans are now just about coming to fruition, so watch this space. Our aim is to make the Parish Hall easier and cheaper to use for local community groups, while using the revenue from larger hires to fund much needed renovations to the facilities which the hall offers. News from Hay & District Dial-a-Ride Are you stuck for a worthwhile New Year’s Resolution? Try something new! It’s a great place to meet friends and family and enjoy a catch-up over a Method coffee, roasted locally in Bishop’s Frome; indulge in homemade treats from Pippa’s Pantry; grab some delicious home-made marshmallows from Memallow’s; head down to the clock tower for a fresh loaf of bread from Gooch; and top it off with some of Tam’s homemade jam – just perfect! There is so much to see and buy at Hay markets – shop local and support your local economy. News from Haygarth Medical Centre About Shingles Shingles is an infection of a nerve and the area of skin supplied by that nerve. It is caused by a virus called varicella-zoster and it is the same virus that causes chickenpox. Most of us get chickenpox at some time in our life, usually as children. Shingles is a reactivation of that virus, but only in one nerve root. Instead of getting a rash all over the body, it usually develops in just one area and on one side. The symptoms of shingles are commonly a blistery

(vesicular) rash and pain. The pain is localised depending on the nerve affected and that pain can range from mild to severe. The pain can start before the rash develops and you may feel generally unwell. We are often asked if you can catch shingles. The answer to this is no – you cannot catch shingles from someone who has shingles as it is a reactivation of an existing virus within the body. However, there is a small risk that someone who is not immune to chickenpox (someone who hasn’t had it before) could catch chickenpox from the shingles rash. Therefore it is advised that those with a blistery shingles rash should keep it covered until dry and to avoid close contact with anyone who is not already immune. We hope this helps dispels some of the myths surrounding shingles. For more information please go to: https://patient.info/health/shingles-herpes-zoster-leaflet. The Shingles vaccine It is not always possible to prevent shingles, but a vaccine called Zostavax can reduce your chances of developing the condition. This vaccine is available to anyone born between 02/09/42 and 01/09/48, or between 02/09/38 and 01/09/41.Those who are within eligible groups may receive their vaccine up until the day before their 80th
birthday. The shingles vaccine is given as a single injection. Please contact your surgery to make an appointment. Hay Medical Centre – 01497 822 100 Talgarth Medical Centre – 01874 713 000. News from U3A Hay December 1918, just one hundred years ago, was the first time that a few women were allowed to vote. Was this momentous event due to the widespread actions of the suffragettes and suffragists, or even to Mrs Pankhurst’s eloquent speeches? At the New Year’s first U3A Hay meeting on Tuesday 15th January at 10.30am, one of our favourite speakers, Roger Curtis (of “Assassination of Kennedy” fame) will return to talk about “Votes for Women”. He promises a lively and challenging morning when he explains just how it was really achieved. After lunch, our afternoon will begin at 1.15pm when we look forward to a session created by us! We invite you to an enjoyable time of “With Great Pleasure” where we each bring a favourite or treasured item and a story to tell! So dig out a treasure and a tale, and come along! The day is open to everyone, at £5 for members and £7 for visitors. Please do come and join us at the Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro. Coffee is served from 10am and lunch from 12.15pm. We’d love to see you there. For further information, phone 01497 851 228.
