February is a social month for me as the Six Nations kicks off and there are plenty of birthdays to enjoy. With Valentine’s Day, Mothers’ Day (March) and Easter (April) just around the corner, our Dining Out feature on page 29 may come in handy. We have so many superb eating places right on our doorstep. This year brings some changes for Cariads Local Ltd: at the end of last year we made the decision to bring Cariads Family Magazine to an end. This magazine has been an enjoyable one to put together each spring, summer and autumn over the last four years, and we hope it’s livened up local children’s book bags as well being a useful resource for events, entertainment and things to do with kids in the area. However, it was always niche publication and new content was getting harder to find! So rather than get repetitive, we’ve been receptive. We’ve listened to the readers of the family magazine, who have come to rely on the What’s On section – and What’s On events for children and families will now be included at the end of both Wye Local and Local Beacon. Please read more on page 25. Personally I think we live in a very special part of the world. When out and about here, my stepson (who lives near London) is still amazed that even if you don’t know someone by name, you’ll often know them by face and say hello in passing. We’re a friendly community. With that in mind, please support local businesses and services. By doing so you are supporting the community you live among. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Lisa Marie, Cariad and Otis.

Get to really know... Lesley Moore Lesley Moore is Chief Executive of Hay & District Dial-a-Ride. Her adverts on social media for drivers or fundraising events can be seen regularly. Here we have a chance to find out what makes her tick! Place of birth? Llanigon. Where do you live now? Llanigon! I think that might qualify me as local. Marital status? Recently engaged to Andy Johnston. Occupation? Chief Executive of Hay & District Diala-Ride. Children? Three, Gabriel, 18, and twin 16-year-old girls, Molly and Madison. What was your favourite childhood television programme? Daktari. If you could have any superpower, what would it be? To be able to teleport anywhere in the world in the blink of an eye. Do you believe in ghosts? Yes, definitely. I’ve had a number of experiences that can’t be explained by anything else! Especially when I lived in Union Mews in Hay. Most exciting thing you’ve won? A £500 Iceland voucher which arrived just before Christmas, which I shared with my mum – perfect timing. I do lots of competitions but still waiting for the “big one”. Two lessons life has taught you? You won’t please everyone, and cherish the little things in life… What makes you grumpy? Quite a lot really – tardiness, rudeness, laziness, also nosy and indiscreet people. I had better stop there… Teenage crush? Starsky AND Hutch. You’re given one million pounds, what do you spend it on? My family and travel. Do you believe in the afterlife? Yes. What book would you recommend to others? Anything by Mo Hayder, in particular Poppet. A proper thriller to tingle the spine! List one thing you wish you could change about yourself: To be as organised at home as I am in work! If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would you go? The Galapagos and Easter Islands. I love travel and it’s impossible to put down just

one. I also want to visit more of beautiful Scotland after my first trip there as an adult last summer. The highlands and islands are definitely high on the list! List five goals on your life’s to-do list: Finish off my family tree. Make sure my children are happy, healthy and independent. More travel. Open a Not On The High Street shop. Get married and live happily ever after…? Name one regret you have: That I didn’t talk more with my grandparents about our family tree. I would love to be able to do that now. Name one thing you miss about being a kid: The whole happy childhood thing really, it was just great. Name one thing you love about being an adult: Learning that it’s ok to say no sometimes. What’s your favourite song of the moment? George Ezra, ‘Hold My Girl’. What’s your favourite song of all time? White Stripes, ‘Seven Nation Army’, but my favourite album is Live’s Throwing Copper. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Saturday night? Couch potato mode with films and a nice home-cooked meal. What’s your favourite thing to do on a Sunday afternoon? Walk the dog (and hopefully some of the Sunday dinner off). Have any hidden talents? I make tiaras and bridal jewellery and I like to dabble in photography. Not sure they’d quite qualify as talents but I enjoy being creative! What would be your dream job? I think I’m already doing it. Working for Dial-a-Ride is great and it’s such a fabulous team of people. Making a difference to people’s lives every day is a real feel-good factor. If you had to change your name, what would you change it to? Well, I will be changing my surname to Johnston at some point! That’ll do nicely. Sum yourself up in five words: Quiet, determined, strong, diplomatic, kind.

Local Talent: Gill Perkins Type of artist? Photographer.

Range of products? Greetings cards, prints, coasters and place mats. All products feature my own photographs, but clients can send me their own pictures to have on items. Price range? £1.50 to £3 for cards, mounted prints from £12 to £40, coasters £3.50 each and place mats from £10.50 each. How long have you been an artist? Six years. Where did you train or gain experience? My father and uncle were keen photographers, and I started with their hand-me-down cameras in my teens, but it has only been since I returned to the UK from Canada in 2007 that I really started taking courses in local colleges and I am now probably better with post-processing than as a photographer! Artist statement: Some of my work is digitally

enhanced, some may look like water colours and others like oil paintings. While I take all pictures in colour, I find that many pictures are more suited to black and white, for example my recent pictures of wild horses taken in the Camargue, France.

BUSINESS PROFILE

David Newell Bespoke Joinery and Furniture David Newell set up his bespoke joinery and furniture business in January 2004, with a love of the look and feel of solid wood. For David, setting up his own business was a completely natural, organic development from hobbyist to professional woodworker and then to doing it his own way in his own workshop. He doesn’t employ anyone else – the buck stops with him! He covers an area of about 50 miles radius from Hay, and his primary customers are private individuals who require bespoke design solutions on furniture and joinery projects – made to measure and made with care, love and an eye to detail. What made you set up the business? Independence – I wanted to do it my way. Where are you based? I work from my own premises near Hay-on-Wye. It is a short commute – just ten metres across the yard. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? No – the business will remain a cottage industry with an emphasis on care, quality, craftsmanship and that personal touch. How many staff do you employ? None – it’s just me and my team of beavers…and they work for the perks. Have you won any awards in your business? No, but the rewards are immense, incomparable. Nothing beats standing back and looking at a piece you have made from scratch that is just right. The only drawback is that you then have to let the customer have it! Do you need to do any annual training to keep your qualification up to date? Not in the formal sense, but the day you stop learning is the day you need a new vocation. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? 1. Anyone can devise a complex solution but the simple solution is what one must strive for. 2. A good deal has something in it for everyone involved. What is your ideal job/client? Clients who give a fairly open brief and leave control of the detailing to the craftsman will always get the best results because they leave room for creativity and pride in the work. What is your greatest achievement in your business? An old craftsman told me when I started that I would probably not make much of a profit, but I would have a lot of satisfaction trying. So far he has been right about

the second bit. My greatest achievement will be when I prove the old so-and-so wrong about the first bit. What has been the biggest help to building your business up? Word of mouth, fuelled by a continuing presence in an excellent local magazine! List one thing you wish you could change about your business: I make a lot of furniture out of European oak which is produced locally at Whitney Sawmills – an excellent product! I lament the production of European oak furniture in the Far East, which is then sold back to consumers in the UK as finished furniture for less than it would cost me to buy the wood alone. The imported pieces are of a very inferior quality, and timber which by rights should go for kindling is used in the construction. Tinted lacquer is used to disguise the multitude of defects. One thing you can say: they have some real wizards in their spray booths. But where is the integrity in that? List five goals on your business to-do list: 1. Better lighting in the workshop. 2. Find a bit of time to make something for my house (may never happen!) 3. Learn more than the most basic rudiments of generating drawings on the computer (may never happen!) 4. Play with my lathe a bit more (may never happen!) 5. Paint the workshop roof. Have any hidden talents come to light since starting the business? I am a tiny bit better at ‘paperwork’ than I expected. Have you had any embarrassing moments while working? Blissfully, I have a terrible memory for that sort of thing. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst doing your job? No one thing springs to mind, but it has been a bowl of cherries, believe me. What have you done today to make you feel proud? I didn’t actually make a single physical thing today…but I did get three new jobs in the pipeline. What do you know now that you wish you’d known before starting your business? If you are a one man band, the staff Xmas dinners are not too rowdy. Sum your business up in five words: You can see the wood!

Decibelles Spring 2019 Concert local churches, and they’ve sung at concerts, parties, weddings and at some beautiful venues, including Penyrheol Chapel, Mwnt church, and the Willow Globe. Decibelles’ spring programme includes Fauré’s Requiem, arranged in three parts for women’s voices, with organ accompaniment. Inspired by women’s suffrage and the end of the Great War, Fiona has also arranged some songs of reflection to complete the programme. In 2015, Fiona Evans, a professional singer living above Erwood, had an idea to form Decibelles, a women’s vocal group in the Hay area. Decibelles are now 14 singers, and their repertoire ranges from classical to early jazz and contemporary folk. In December 2016, they gave three performances of Britten’s ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ in

Plant of the Month

COAL, WOOD & OIL HEATING

Stewart K. Powles PLUMBING & HEATING ENGINEER HELLEBORES Hellebores are greatly underrated perennial plants, some of which are evergreen, with showy flowers in the winter and early spring before most of the other perennials have even come into growth. Perhaps the best known of the hellebores is Helleborus niger, better known as the ‘Christmas Rose’.These are evergreen with divided, deep green leaves and nodding, white flowers with golden stamens. As the name suggests, they can be in flower for Christmas but in most years the flowers last well into the New Year. By March the later flowering Helleborus x hybridus or ‘Lenten Rose’ will be taking centre stage with their cup-shaped, white, pink or purple flowers, many of which have attractive, spotted patterns on the inside of the petals. Other Hellebores such as H. corsicus and H. foetidus have divided, spiny, dark green leaves and pale green flowers carried in large clusters in late winter and early spring.

4 Garibaldi Terrace Hay-on-Wye Hereford HR3 5AW

T. 01497 820 229

Hellebores in general prefer semi-shade and a moisture retentive soil and are therefore ideal for edge of woodland or around the base of shrubs. As flower buds develop in the winter, old, blackened leaves need to be removed to allow the flowers to be seen at their best. Just remember though that all parts of the plant may cause severe discomfort if ingested and that the sap may irritate skin. However, don’t let this put you off as every garden should have a place for at least one variety of the hard-working Hellebore. Article supplied by The Old Railway Line Garden Centre, Three Cocks.

An energising synergistic mix of plant oils, using lemon from lemon rind, petitgrain from the leaf of the bitter orange tree, rose geranium from the pelargonium leaf and sandalwood from the wood of the santalum tree. Petitgrain has a fresh flowery light perfume and it works so well with other citrus oils; it was one of the first ingredients used in eau de cologne, and records show it has been distilled since 1694. Therapeutically petitgrain can soothe an over active mind, and seems to help sleeplessness; it is a good anti-depressant and can help us recover from the ‘winter blues’. Wonderful diffused in an atomizer but also great in a wake-up bath in the morning. No4 – Energise with fresh & light pure essential oil and room mist. Article by Jacqueline Kennett. to encourage a range of tit species and importantly the Pied Fly Catcher. They also altered some existing boxes so that they could be inspected. Andy King the Bird Recorder for the Vice County of Brecknock visited the boxes monthly over the summer to monitor nesting attempts and success. Almost all the boxes were occupied in the first year – mostly by Blue Tits! But Pied Flycatchers were found nesting in six boxes at Coed Dyrysiog. These smart little birds breed in our western oak woods but over winter in West Africa.

Volunteer Nature Reserve Warden Trevor Lee puts up one of the new bird boxes Last March Brecknock Wildlife Trust (now Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales) installed 25 new quality Larch bird boxes from a local supplier at Coed Dyrysiog and Drostre Wood Reserves. Each box has a removable lid to aid monitoring. The boxes were installed with a variety of hole sizes

This was made possible by donations received at the funeral of member David Phillips, an enthusiastic visitor to the county who had hoped to move nearer to family at Llanafan-fawr. The Wildlife Trust would like to thank the Phillips family for this legacy which, with the help of volunteers, will contribute towards conservation and our understanding wildlife for many years to come. Convey your forté! Yo! Recently I saw an appeal on another wonderful local resource – the Hay Community Page (FB). The enquirer was looking for recommendations for a good massage. The list grew longer and longer with names. Who knew there were so many body workers around Hay?! But not ONE person actually asked the most important question: What KIND of massage?! Much time would have been saved had they (or the respondents) queried this, because there is: Thai, Sports, Swedish, Hot stone, Aromatherapy, Shiatsu, et al... all providing a completely different service, as all the body workers would agree! Do they have an injury, want to deeply relax, need unbinding?! Same with sports injuries: recommending a Trigger Point therapist (say), for an issue an osteopath should see, is a total waste of the client’s money (but I’ve seen that too)! But those of us providing a service also need to place ourselves really well in our marketing to be completely clear about what we provide, and where our expertise lies. Personal Trainers will offer completely different services depending on where they like to specialise, and a great deal will depend on our original training providers too. There’s a

vast amount to cover but we will have studied: Optimal Nutrition,Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise (circuits design, gym instruction, weights), maybe Sports Therapy, Exercise for special populations (pre/postnatal for example),Weight Management, Doctors’ referrals, and that’s the basics (I even did sports massage!).We might then take extra modules to enhance our skillset, and add in to what we decide is our forté. Before I did PT I’d started out as an exercise instructor (Aerobics) so I’m sympathetic in modifying for the less conditioned clients (I was used to the crazy women on the front row who needed peeling off the ceiling, to the ladies hiding at the back unsure of which direction to go – and I’m the same at a presenter’s master class!). Other trainers might specialise in Weight training for men (say), or more the outdoor activities. I’ll happily refer a client on if we don’t ‘fit’ well. Myself? I’m a multi plane movement and postural expert, with many tools, predominantly serving female clients, providing all you’d expect from an experienced PT (but, I like to think, a little extra too)! Llyswen & Boughrood Show is 60 The Llyswen & Boughrood Show will be celebrating its 60th birthday this year with an exhibition of memories and photos from over the years. On Sunday 27th January a successful Afternoon Tea was held to collect memories from past Shows, and there will be another one at 2pm in Llyswen & Boughrood Community Hall on Sunday 24th March. Everyone is invited to come along, join in for tea and share stories from past shows – from as recently as last year to as far back as the 1960s! The 60th Exhibition is being supported by a grant from the Brecon Rotary Club ‘Community Chest’ Small Grants Scheme. There is no charge for tea, but please take along any photos, prize cards, anything at all that you might have relating to the Show over the years. If you know which year they relate to, all the better, but don’t worry if you don’t, everyone will have fun trying to find out when it was! Over the years people will have come from far and wide to compete at the Show, so the organisers would be delighted for you

to invite anyone you might know who would like to go along and be involved, especially anyone who might remember the early years, as so many are no longer with us. If you are unable to make the Afternoon Teas and have stories, photos, etc. that you would like to share, please contact Carol Brown, by email on carolbrown42@hotmail.com or by phone on 01874 754 504.

A Befriending Service Powys Befriending Service supports people aged over 50 who are isolated to maintain their independence and improve their social networks. For varying reasons, some people might need our support to get out and enjoy a social activity, join a lunch or café group, meet new friends or learn new skills. We have trained and supportive befrienders who offer their time to assist those in need. Individuals can self-refer or with permission someone else can refer for them. If you are over 50, live in Powys, are at risk of losing your independence, are socially isolated and want to meet new friends and have fun – call us and see what we can offer. We are also looking for volunteers to help improve quality of life for others. Can you spare at least two hours a week? Are you reliable, a good listener and enjoy the company of others, could you put a smile on someone’s face? Could you visit people in their own homes, or maybe you would like to run your own local group? With some training, support and a DBS check we can offer you various opportunities from telephone befriending, transport help, befriending in your local community, or helping organise and support an existing group in your area. If you live in the South Powys area, please give Caroline Massey a call to discuss how we can help you, whether through volunteering or to become a client and access our service. For more information contact the main office 01597 822191, call Caroline on 07900 523 276 or email caroline.bull-massey@pavo.org.uk. Article supplied by Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations

Dog poo: bag it and bin it...

Acanthus Curtains

Judging from recent discussions on Facebook and the state of the pavements, dog fouling has become a huge problem in the area. All dog owners have a legal responsibility to clean up after their pooches and most do; the minority who don’t make the streets and pavements a dirty and potentially disease-causing obstacle course. Dog poo isn’t just smelly and unpleasant, it can also be full of worm eggs which have the potential to make people very poorly. Children are most vulnerable as they are not always scrupulous at washing their hands but due to the complicated life cycles of these parasites we are all potentially at risk from infection. Bagged dog faeces can be placed in public bins so are easy to dispose of. During February Hay Veterinary Group is offering free packets of poo bags with purchases of dog worming treatments (while stocks last, subject to terms and conditions).Free nurse clinics allow us to weigh your dog and provide tailored worming advice. Please note we cannot dispense wormer unless we have seen and weighed your dog within the last 12 months. Article supplied by Hay Veterinary Group

In 2014 a director of the charity CAIS, Geraint Jones, was given the task of forming a new veteran’s project that would fill the obvious gap for veterans of the armed forces in Wales. CAIS is based in Colwyn Bay and Geraint was a psychiatric nurse and understood the problems faced by veterans with PTSD and other issues. Therefore Geraint launched Change Step in North Wales. This was done after a successful bid for funding from the Armed Forces Libor fund. Change Step now covers all of Wales with Peer Mentors. Their brief is to help veterans in any way they can and to direct them to the right agency for the best support. The peer mentor for Powys is based in Brecon and currently supports over 20 veterans with various issues. Of course PTSD features along with other problems faced by veterans such as drug or alcohol abuse, debt issues, and health issues. Change Step supports anyone who has served, even if it was only for a month. If you know a veteran who needs help please get in touch – contact Phil Johnson on 07717 465 147 or phil.johnson@kaleidoscopeproject.org.uk.

Menin Gate, 11th November Mrs Pauline Williams, Hay and District RBL ladies standard bearer, travelled to Belgium to take part in the World War One Remembrance Parade at the Menin Gate and the service at St George’s Memorial Church in Ypres. Pauline was the only RBL standard from the UK so had a massively important role on the day. She later travelled the battle fields with the Welsh Guards Pilgrims, taking part in many ceremonies, one being of an unknown soldier being laid to rest. A week for Pauline to remember for the rest of her life.

School’s Out! So the Cariads Family Magazine was a firm favourite with local families (and with the team, too). A magazine promoting activity ideas, days out, articles, recipes and most importantly the huge What’s On section – all family related. Now we’re excited to be moving to this new format. With our two monthly community magazines, Wye Local and Local Beacon, we will be including a School’s Out! feature in the following issues each year: • February issues (half term) • April issues (Easter holiday) • May issues (half term) • July & August issues (summer holidays) • October issues (half term) • December issues (Christmas holidays). At the back of BOTH magazines we will continue to list family events. When you get stopped in the street to be told: “Cariads Family Magazine is our bible during the school holidays,” how could we

possibly not continue to include these?! We’ve highlighted them in blue so that they stand out from the other listings. I want to thank all the Cariads Family Magazine advertisers for supporting us in this new format. I know they too are glad of the opportunity to promote their family-aimed services or business to local families. If you would like to be included in our April issues, reaching families, grandparents, guardians and carers from Sennybridge to Eardisley, please get in touch. Prices start from £31.50 – this gets you an advert in BOTH magazines, reaching a readership of 25,000! We also welcome articles, interviews and reviews.

The last straw

After watching the episode of Blue Planet about rubbish and plastic being thrown away and ending up in our oceans,Ysgol y Mynydd Du pupils decided that it was the last straw! The Eco Committee were spurred into action and it was agreed that something needed to be done. Pupils researched the problem further and were horrified by the facts that they discovered: • Plastic straws are the 11th most commonly found ocean rubbish. • They take 200 years to decompose and can’t be recycled in most places. The Eco Committee started to do the maths and went to see their head, Miss Toone, with the facts and figures. “If every child in the infants has milk in an individual plastic bottle with a straw, 190 school days of the year, for our school alone, that would total 7,790 bottles and straws!” By using glass bottles (that are 100% recyclable) and reusable beakers, Ysgol y Mynydd Du has now reduced its carbon footprint through the simple process of switching how the infants receive their milk. The Eco Committee are now actively looking into what other changes they can put into place to help create a greener future for generations to come. This has included signing up for the battery recycling scheme and also the Writing Instruments Recycling Programme where you can recycle any brand of pen, highlighter, correction fluid or markers. So if you are thinking of making a New Year’s resolution, make it a green one. It’s never too late to start and join our pupils at Ysgol Y Mynydd Du: pledge to make the future green. Remember, don’t throw away your old batteries or pens, bring them into school so we can recycle them. “I’m really pleased that Miss Toone has agreed to let us use glass bottles because we are reducing plastic waste.” – Jack

Drama workshops are fun! Hay Junior Youth Theatre celebrate their 10 year anniversary this year. They are calling for new members aged 7–11. Performance skills include drama games, improvisations, scripts (including your own), song, dance, mime and masks. The fun doesn’t stop there. Hay Senior Youth Theatre began 6 years ago for young people aged 12–15. Carefully designed so that you don’t have to get up early, these are Saturday afternoon workshops. Sessions are very social, with much hilarity, then using drama games to focus, moving into improvisation and creative theatrical ideas. The new February/March topic offers young people the chance to make short films and live sketches, comedy or serious, illustrating their views on technological health. Are we sitting still for too long? Are we speaking to each other much or do we just text? Techno-In-dependence explores this in the form of a live TV panel show to be shown at the end of March for Hay Independence Day celebrations. Contact Janine: 07733 055 430.

News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Whilst our continental neighbours have had to contend with extreme snowfalls and disruption in the early weeks of the New Year, so far we have been spared the excesses of last winter. However, the long-range weather forecast is indicating some snow and ice to come, which may already have materialised by the time this edition of Wye Local reaches you. Regardless of what the weather has in store for us, readers will doubtless be aware of the chill wind that faces Powys County Council and all local authorities in terms of their funding allocations from central government. With the 2019/2020 budget round looming, the local press has already featured stories of potential funding reductions to come, involving highways, waste and environmental services, together with a threat to reduce the street lighting budget dramatically. It is still unclear what the final package will look like, but, along with my colleagues in the Welsh Liberal Democrat/Green Group on Powys County Council, we will be looking to safeguard the interests of more marginalised and vulnerable residents in assessing any proposed savings and their impact on our communities. At a time of considerable pressure on household budgets, with a significant rise in PCC Council Tax in the offing, as well as substantial hikes in the precept for both Dyfed–Powys Police and the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Authority, I wholeheartedly support Talgarth Town Council’s recent decision to freeze its own precept for the coming year at 2018/19 levels. My Town Council colleagues are ambitious for our town but this has to be tempered by budgetary restraint in these challenging times. We are particularly fortunate here in Talgarth to have in Josephine Rumsey an experienced Town Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer to help facilitate the budget process. The closure of the A479 Bronllys Road continues to cause significant disruption locally and the Dwr Cymru contractors have encountered more

than their fair share of difficulties. I am particularly concerned about the ongoing impact on adjacent businesses and householders and am doing my utmost to assist when problems are brought to my attention. Thanks are due to those locally who have stepped forward to help assess the impact on commercial operations, and where appropriate, to seek redress. Another area of concern that has been exacerbated by the road closure is the volume and speed of traffic along the A438 from Talgarth to Three Cocks. In this context, the recent visit to Ysgol y Mynydd Du by Dyfed–Powys Police and Crime Commissioner Dafydd Llywelyn was particularly timely. Pupils, staff, governors and parents had an opportunity to voice their concerns about speed enforcement and members of the Road Safety Committee at Ysgol y Mynydd Du had a training session from the Go Safe team in monitoring the speed of passing vehicles. Following Dafydd Llywelyn’s visit, Go Safe and the Neighbourhood Policing Team will be working more closely with the school community. Powys County Council has also committed to upgrading the kerb adjacent to Ysgol y Mynydd Du, to reviewing the operation of the flashing 20 mph signs – and also to working on a reconfigured Three Cocks junction, which has become an accident blackspot. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, via Twitter @WmPowell2016 or Facebook @WilliamPowellLD. My next advice surgery is on Friday 1st February from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre – no appointment is necessary. In any event, I look forward to seeing you soon. Best wishes, William

News from Hay Castle Trust

R

P

Tragic Matilda Dr Peter Ford has been a volunteer and a Friend of Hay Castle for many years and his involvement with the project alongside his passion for local history led him to write a book about one of the many exciting characters from the castle’s past. Peter drew on a variety of sources to build a colourful picture of the Lady of Hay, Matilda de Braose. First brought to the public eye in the 1970s by Barbara Erskine’s book, Lady of Hay, the real Matilda has proved something of an enigma. There are no remaining images of her, so we don’t really know what she looked like, yet her strong character lives on in the stories associated with her name. One legend claims that Matilda was a giantess who built Hay Castle in one night, gathering stones in her apron. At the end of the night she found a stone in her shoe and threw it across the River Wye in irritation. That stone – standing six feet tall and carved with a very early cross – can be found today in Llowes Church.

Matilda’s impact on society doesn’t end there. After being highly regarded by King John, her family fell out of favour and they fled Hay to Ireland to escape the King’s men. Matilda’s husband William escaped, but she was captured along with her son. They were imprisoned in a bleak, lonely castle and left to starve to death. Her brutal murder may have fuelled the uprising of the powerful barons who opposed King John, and it is often claimed that the death of Matilda led to the writing of clause 39 of the Magna Carta. Peter’s book is available for £6.95 on Amazon.co.uk or through Hay Castle: info@haycastletrust.com.

News from Kirsty Williams People in the local area may be aware of concerns about future funding for Hay-on-Wye’s Recreation Ground, Sports Pavilion and the public toilets at the Clock Tower and on Oxford Road – and the future plans for the Council Offices. An agreement was reached between Hay Town Council and Powys County Council in 2015, but the Powys Cabinet has now annulled that agreement without the agreement of the Town Council. I wrote to the County Council months ago seeking clarification. The issue is also being pursued vigorously by local Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillors Gareth Ratcliffe and James Gibson-Watt, who are trying to persuade the County Council to stick to the original deal. In some other recent news: the free TV licence for people over 75 may be ending as the Westminster Government is cutting funding; the Welsh Government announced £5 million to help eradicate sheep scab; and the Welsh Government also announced £3 million to improve music services across Wales. News from Chris Davies -Your local MP

2019 is a year I am feeling extremely positive about. There will be challenges, with Brexit continuing to dominate much of my Parliamentary work. Over the coming weeks votes have and will continue to take place and every vote will be extremely close as the Government having no overall majority. I want to see Brexit succeed and for us to get a good deal with the European Union. Our current deal proposed by the Prime Minister is a withdrawal agreement and a future trade agreement will take place once this is agreed.

of these industries are dependent on strong links with the European Union, this is why I am trying to ensure we have a smooth withdrawal transition period. The last thing we want is for a negative knock on effect to hit these industries and negatively affect people’s livelihoods. So in the next few weeks I will be fighting Brecon and Radnorshire’s corner. Our Constituency voted Brexit, Wales voted Brexit and the UK voted Brexit. I will continue to ensure this vote is respected and we make the most of the global opportunities post-Brexit. Talgarth Bowling Club This year, Talgarth Bowling Club has been lucky enough to be chosen to benefit from the Co-op Local Community Fund. The Club are delighted at this opportunity to raise funds to support their volunteer green-keeping team. This small team work all year round to keep the green in tip top condition for social and league games, but also for local schoolchildren, disabled bowlers, and so that the club can participate in the annual Talgarth Sports Weekend. To help the Club raise vital funds, they will be relying on Co-op shoppers. Every time you buy Co-op owned products you get a five per cent reward for yourself, and a further one per cent goes to local causes like Talgarth Bowling Club. Co-op members can decide which local group they would like to back by going online: www.coop.co.uk/membership. Secretary of Talgarth Bowling Club Audrey Micklewright says: “We really hope that people will visit the website and choose to support our small community club. If you are not a member and would like to support us, you can join at your local store or online at www.coop.co.uk. “When a community comes together we are able to achieve great things, so we hope you can help promote our project.” For more information please contact Audrey Micklewright on 01874 711 458.

News from... News from Drover Cycles E-bikes: Better for you, your pocket and the planet! An electric bike, by which we mean a bike with an integrated electric motor powered by a battery, is an increasingly popular choice for local residents – and with good reason! E-bikes offer the benefits of “normal” cycling but without so much strain on lungs and legs. If you want to get fit but your New Year’s resolutions are already proving hard to keep, it’s really worth giving an e-bike a try. In our experience e-bike owners ride further and more often than they would ever have done on a pedal-only bike. You may have heard that e-bikes are expensive and it’s certainly true they are an investment; you’ll need to budget between £1,000 and £3,000. However, they can also save you money if you use them instead of your car for regular journeys like shopping, commuting or the school run. There’s no Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax) or MOT to pay for on an e-bike and your insurance and servicing costs are much lower. To fully recharge your battery will cost about 10p and give you a range of at least 30 to 50 miles – even the most fuel efficient car won’t come close to that! If you take into account the health benefits as well, why wouldn’t you give an electric bike a go? Pop into Drover Cycles for a chat and a no-obligation test ride. We have a range of e-bikes in stock and run demo days throughout the year. News from Glasbury Get-Together Club Since our last club meeting, being our Christmas lunch at The Old Barn, we haven’t too much news as yet. As you read you will already have attended our AGM and 10-year celebration in January, of which details will be in the March issue. Our first committee meeting of the new year was on 9th January – good to start making preparations for the year ahead. News from Gwernyfed High School GHS Annual Ski Trip Gwernyfed High School’s students have now had time to settle back into their normal non-ski filled lives after recently visiting France to ski at the Montgenèvre ski resort. Further away than last year’s resort, which meant more time in our new home (The Bus). Pupils had a tiring journey which ended with late night boots, skis and helmet fittings. The morning routine is integral to getting us all out on the slopes as quickly as possible and became second nature to the pupils as we made our way through the week. Those who had never skied before were carving up the snow by the end of the week because of the highly trained ski instructors we get. Skiing is not the only reason for the residential ski trip – it helps increase confidence within the pupils. They have to live away from the comfort of mum and dad so their independence is developed as well. It also grants opportunities for pupils who might not get the opportunity later in life. Montgenèvre is a beautiful resort and pupils are lucky to have such a rewarding and satisfying opportunity at Gwernyfed High School.

News from Hay Town Council Citizen of the Year Award Hay Town Council is launching its Citizen of the Year Award for the second year. John Evans won the inaugural award for his many years of outstanding volunteering and dedication to improving Hay-on-Wye. Nominations for this year’s award are now being taken. Forms can be found online on Hay Town Council’s website. Hard copies are available from the Council Offices in the Clerk’s Office or first-floor kitchen. The rules of nomination have been slightly amended. Last year only people living in Hay could nominate, but this year, nominations can be made by anyone. The person being nominated must still live in the Hay Town Council area. So, if you know of anyone who has carried out outstanding voluntary service on behalf of the community, please send us your completed nomination forms! The deadline for this year’s competition is Monday 18th March. Senior Citizens’ Party This year’s Senior Citizen Party was held on Tuesday 8th January and almost 40 residents of Hay came along to enjoy a post-festive treat and an excellent

three-course meal. This was followed by a quiz and bingo, and then Hay Primary School very kindly attended with about 25 pupils and sang some songs for the senior citizens. Hay Town Council would like to wish all our residents a very Happy New Year. News from U3A Hay Fake news!Headline-grabbing now, but unfortunately it’s nothing new. Did you know that Solzhenitsyn even warned the West about its dangers 40 years ago? At our next meeting of U3A Hay on Tuesday 19th February at 10.30am, Richard Walker will explain why the writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn irritated the Russian authorities so much, and why he is now considered one of the great figures of the 20th century. After lunch, at 1.15pm, we will watch the 2012 film Wadjda which tells the tale of a young Saudi Arabian girl who longs to own a bicycle...in a country where only males are allowed to ride bicycles! Starring Waad Mohammed and directed by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s first female filmmaker, Haifa al-Mansour, it is an example of the struggle to overcome convention and authority even in the making of this insightful film.

We meet in the gracious Music Room of Baskerville Hall Hotel, Clyro, where coffee is served from 10am.Lunch is served from 12.15pm. Admission is £5 for members and £7 for non-members. Do come and join us for a stimulating day – we hope to see you there! News from Hay2Timbuktu The end of 2018 into 2019 proved very successful for H2T. The Department for International Development confirmed a grant which will support 60 girls in three schools in Timbuktu and will fund the training of three midwifery assistants. The twoyear grant will fund equipment, books and remedial lessons for the girls, giving them an opportunity to fulfill their potential and continue their education. Two of the trustees from H2T travelled to Mali to finalise the programme delivery with key partners and although travel beyond Bamako remains a major security risk, meetings in the capital with stakeholders including the Mayor of Timbuktu, Programme Director for AMSS, our partner NGO, the Regional Director for AMSS, the British Ambassador to Mali and one of the English teachers from Timbuktu gave us confidence that the support

in Timbuktu from H2T and the people of Hay is well received. We had the opportunity to learn of the completion of toilet building in all three schools, to pass on books and letters from Hay Primary School and to give the Christmas greetings and messages from Hay folk to the Mayor. This year H2T plans to raise funds for solar lighting in schools to enable students to complete their homework with lamps charged at school. To learn more join us in Hay Primary School at 7pm on Friday 4th February. Photo: John Winter discusses Hay’s contribution in Timbuktu with the Mayor of Timbuktu.
