For anyone with animals in their lives, turn to our Pets Corner feature starting on page 26. Clare has sourced some wonderful, local businesses that all offer something for our adored pets. For years Cariad has been asking for a rabbit. I kept saying, “when you’re seven!” – just to buy me some time. Well, she’s seven this July. So thank you to Hay Vets for those super facts on page 31. Mid-May we’ll be delivering the 2020 Local Landscapes Calendar. We hope that these appeal to Hay’s many visitors over the coming months, and most importantly that the calendar will encourage them back! If you’re a local hotel or B&B do get in touch if you’d like to stock them – a great little earner just for displaying a calendar full of superb images, all taken in the Brecon Beacons National Park. Fingers crossed for a dry month so us locals can enjoy the two major festivals on in the town. All I want is a cider (or several) in the sun, people watching while listening to some super duper music. Enjoy, Lisa Marie x Photo: Lisa Marie, Cariad and Otis Badham.

BUSINESS PROFILE
Guy Notman Upholstery Guy began his training in upholstery in the late 1970s with Parker Knoll, and subsequently with a smaller company making sofas, chairs and sofa beds to individual order. He started Guy Notman T/A GJN in 1999, at that time mostly making new furniture with the occasional piece of reupholstery; however, over the last few years, the bulk of his business has been on the reupholstery side. Between 2012 and 2013, he and his wife June undertook the refurbishment of the soft furnishings and upholstery of Llangoed Hall Hotel, and later that of The Swan at Hay. Guy’s workshop is based at the Bage, although the pattern books are at his home in Llanstephan where clients are welcome to visit to select a fabric of their choice. Should a client want a new piece of furniture, Guy will make it to their specification; or should they show
him an illustration of a sofa or chair they particularly like, he will make it as near as possible to the original. With all of the furniture Guy makes, the frames are made from hardwoods such as beech or ash and each seat has a fully-coiled sprung seat unit. He doesn’t use foam in any of the construction, but clients do have the option of a feather-wrapped foam seat cushion if prefered to those of fibre or feather. There is still a Google site featuring GJN Furniture & Fabrics, which was filmed in a shop in Stow-onthe-Wold in 2014 and shows some of the different designs that Guy has made over the years. Guy would like to thank all of his clients for their business and for the support he has received throughout the area.

The Bakers’ Table at Talgarth Mill The Bakers’ Table at Talgarth Mill has just been recommended in a new book by Sarah Guy. Europe’s Best Bakeries began with the author’s interest in a rapidly expanding baking scene and an admiration for individuals driving the growth. The Bakers’ Table was established as a Community Interest Company as part of the Village SOS project that saw a derelict Talgarth Mill restored to a working state in 2011. A bijou room in the old cottage building houses the bakery – two small deck ovens, a locally, purpose-made table, mixer, fridge and sink. The restored watermill grinds only wholemeal flour, locally grown strong wholemeal variety AC Barrie is used in the bakery for 100% wholemeal – Bara Felinwr (Miller’s bread), Rye is mixed with Shipton Mill white for the bakery’s most popular loaf – Bara Havard, named after Peter Havard (the last miller before the Mill fell into disrepair) and Spelt loaves make an appearance on Thursdays, using an ancient grain which is lower in gluten and therefore more suitable for people with an intolerance. The café makes use of the bakery’s bread in its menu, which is based on local, seasonal ingredients, with their award-winning bread at the heart of every dish. Home-made soups, curries, quiches and rarebit cater for vegetarian customers while WJ George supply cooked ham, sausages and bacon for the specials menu which changes daily. Fish from Black Mountains Smokery, jam and chutney from Black Mountains Preserves, Welsh cheeses, James Gourmet Coffee and locally sourced cold drinks appear in the menu together with a range of homemade cakes, scones and sausage rolls on Saturdays. Monthly ‘Learn to Bake’ classes run by Nicola Craven are popular and range from basic breads to sourdough and pizzas. The café sells the Mill’s flour and bread kits and is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am–4pm, with lunch being served between 11.30am and 3pm.

New in Town: Red Barn Vintage China
Where are you based and what is the area in which you work? We are based in Brilley and we cover the area around Hay, west to Brecon and northwards to Newtown. Why the Hay area? Five years ago we decided to move from Cardiff and took on my late parents’ home. The first time I saw the house I fell in love with it and it felt as though I had come home. Hay has a vibrancy about it which attracted us to work and live in the area. It is quirky, arty and has a diverse range of events, a good mix of independent businesses and a wonderful base for outdoor pursuits. Why did you decide to start this business? As a child I was surrounded by relatives who had a love of antiques and needlework – it was only natural that I should gain a similar love and passion by collecting antique costume and becoming a bobbin lace teacher. I trained in conservation and restoration and worked at Harlaxton Manor in Grantham. I then worked in retail management with Royal Doulton and became passionate about the sleek, sophisticated lines of their tableware and the quintessentially English country house look of Minton, Spode and Royal Worcester. A table dressed in beautiful china, glass, cutlery and table linen transforms a simple meal or tea into something magical. The aim of the business is to allow others to enjoy our china, cutlery, etc., be it for a wedding, baby shower, christening or tea party. We hire out glassware, vintage china, cutlery and table linen. We undertake the laundry of all the table linens and washing of the glass and china, which takes the pressure off those organising their event. What are the challenges you’ve encountered? We endeavour to be as green and environmentally
conscious as possible and it has been quite a challenge to find transportation materials that avoid the use of plastics and non-recyclable materials such as bubble wrap. We pack the items in washable and reusable materials in collapsible crates in order to reduce storage space at the venue. Trying to transport table linens so that there is minimal creasing has been a challenge as well. What do you wish you had known before you started? You totally underestimate the amount of time that is involved, and the unexpected hidden challenges and expenses come up from time to time. What type of experience helped you to start and manage this business? I have had help from Business Wales, who provide you with an advisor and run a wide range of workshops with subjects ranging from GDPR, Branding and Marketing to Agriculture and Tendering. SuperFast Wales provides help with the digital side of a business. They are a free service and the advisors run their own businesses and consultancies. The business makes use of each of our strong points such as administration, extensive retail management, IT and customer services and commitment. Describe a typical day in your business: No two days are the same. One day it might be laundering and ironing table linen, the next might be taking photos for social media, packing china or networking. Admin takes up a lot of time as does sourcing items. One of the most important and enjoyable parts of a day is discussing with a customer their requirements including colour and pattern selection. Each event is different from the next. Any advice to new businesses in this area? Make sure that you carry out your market research and don’t run before you can walk. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice and help.

Glasbury Arts is delighted to be coordinating this year’s biannual Celebration of Welsh Contemporary Painting across six galleries in south, mid and west Wales starting in July and running through to the end of November. We have also coordinated the first experimental event in two galleries in 2017. The aim is to showcase the work of 36 artists including some of Wales’ most significant and best loved painters, many with international reputations, working in our country. They include painters such as Shani Rhys James, Alan Salisbury, Charles Burton (the elder statesman of current Welsh painters), and those who are likely to be the next successful generation. Also there are some of our best college art students from Merthyr and Haverfordwest, pupils from Gwernyfed High School, which has one of the best visual arts departments in the country; and a stunning painter who is a Congolese refugee who fled in fear of his life and is now living in South Wales. The participating galleries will each showcase a different range of painters. The galleries are Cyfarthfa Castle Museum and Gallery Merthyr Tydfil, Redhouse Gallery Merthyr Tydfil (both 8th July–23rd September), Andrew Lamont Gallery Brecon (19th September–17th November), Oriel-y-Parc, St David’s, Pembrokeshire College (both 4th October–30th November) and the Futures Gallery, Pierhead Building in Cardiff (4th–30th November). Further details including timings and related community activities will be on the Celebration of Welsh Contemporary Painting website (cowcp.co.uk) or the websites of Glasbury Arts and participating galleries. Given the diverse range and quality of the artists, each of these exhibitions should not be missed.

Plant of the Month
The Three Tuns is a beautiful 16th century pub located in the heart of Hay, specialising in authentic Italian cuisine from Monday to Saturday, whilst serving a traditional roast on Sundays.
PELARGONIUMS The favourite windowsill plant of cottage gardens and grown widely in all gardens in summer – Pelargoniums, commonly referred to as Geraniums. They’re so well known that it’s hardly necessary to describe the large, ball-shaped heads of florets in a range of whites, pinks and reds, some with attractive markings on the petals. Many have two-colour zoning on the leaves and there are also variegated varieties. Pelargoniums are almost all tender, evergreen plants of South African origin. When introduced to Britain they were given the common name Geranium because of their similarity to the equally wonderful, but hardy Geraniums or Cranesbills, which are also a ‘must have’ plant for all gardens. Pelargoniums are broadly divided into four main groups: Zonal, Regal, Ivy Leaved or trailing and Scented leaved – showing how versatile the plants are. They are perfect for tubs, troughs, hanging baskets and bedding schemes in borders. Pelargoniums benefit from regular feeding, deadheading and watering and prefer an open, sunny site. On their own, taking centre stage, or planted with other summer plants such as Lobelia, Fuchsia and Petunia, they are worthy of a place in every garden.

with the Bird Cherry usually the last to appear. It is a Northern European species that is reasonably frequent in our county, particularly around Brecon. Old names for the tree include Hackberry, Hagberry and Jackwood. The fruit is not particularly appetising (“for the birds”) and the wood is not highly sought after, unlike its relative, Wild Cherry or Gean, which is used in furniture and musical instruments. This also grows in Brecknock and is often found in our woodlands. Perversely the Latin botanical name for this Cherry, Prunus avium, references birds. Its fruit is rather more palatable and has been used to make Cherry Brandy.
Prunus padus Bird Cherry This native Cherry tree should be providing a good display of flowers this month. It is the culmination of a series of blossoms, starting in February, all from the genus Prunus. Blackthorn and Cherry-Plum (the latter rare in our county) start the display together with Damsons and Plums. The Cherries follow
But the best floral display lies with the Bird Cherry and its pendulous sprays of white flowers. Brecknock at The Wildlife Trust of South & West Wales: www.bit.ly/breconwild My blog: www.bit.ly/breckbot John Crellin

The Miracle Morning I’m celebrating 20 years in the Health and Fitness Industry with an incentive I think you’ll like! In my career (either privately as a PT or in the gym and my classes), I’ve noticed more and more adverse postural patterns kicking in, and this is usually down to what I call the i-muscles! (Progressively over the last two decades.) Hunching over a mobile phone or laptops, as well as desk work, we see the neck in lordosis (head forward), an immobile thoracic (mid-back), in kyphosis (flexed), hip flexors tighter than ever (athletes too)! Glutes (buttocks) having amnesia or misfiring, pelvises needing tweaking, and spines decompressing! I’ve done quite a lot along the lines of corrective exercise with various courses: Postural Assessment, SportsTherapy, The Art and Science of Stretching, Advanced Functional Trainer (that was tough!), and ‘I-Move-Freely’, but most tend to be for diagnostic or 1-2-1 work. What excites me most are exercises, movements or functionalities that are simply magical for everyone! As soon as I see one I just KNOW! And I’ll keep that in my repertoire for ever. The ones that really make the grade for me are safe to do in a group generically (as they can’t harm you). And teaching
Fitness and Embodiment Yoga (so good for thoracic mobility), Pilates (just so good!), Trigger Point Pilates (stiff backs, necks and more), and a little traditional working knowledge of SportsTherapy thrown into the mix means a holistic, whole body approach. These are the kind of movements that you cannot know without experience, and they’re SO GOOD! And then it hit me – put all this magic into a flowing sequence that you can use for life from the moment you wake up, with a series of stretches to facilitate elongating various ligaments to match your nocturnally lengthened spine (before you even get out of bed!)… right down to your feet. I believe this offering will really help you, from stiff necks and backs (so common), to inflexible ankles (ever wondered why some can’t squat low – just one reason!) Practically every time I do any session I think of another I know so I’m limiting this to my top 20 (I can always do another workshop!) Please join me and book this soon. You will absolutely love this morning! Article

The Harley Houses Residents of Hay will be familiar with the picturesque almshouses on Church Street and Brecon Road. Originally established by Frances Harley in 1833, they have been a feature of the western part of the town for nearly 200 years. When built they were designed to support a total of 18 elderly single women but the houses have since been updated to provide increased space in fewer units. Each house comprises a living room, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. The residents pay a modest amount to live in the houses, and enjoy access to the delightful communal gardens behind the Brecon Road properties and the individual gardens behind the Church Street properties.
living within easy walking distance of the town and shops. At present there is a vacancy for which applications are invited. Prospective residents currently have the opportunity to look round one of the houses, which is being modernised ready for its next occupant. If you are interested in one of the houses for yourself or a friend or family member, please contact the Clerk, Jane Stannard, on 01497 821 076.
The homes are managed by a board of local trustees, who are all volunteers, to provide safe, wellmaintained and warm homes as required by Miss Harley’s original gift. Residents need to be over 60, to have lived in Hay for at least three years and be single, widowed or divorced. They form a mutually supportive community, and have the convenience of

Local Talent Robert Evans
Type of artist: Musician, conductor, singer.
Directed by
Where did you train or gain experience? Boy at Hereford Cathedral, studied clarinet at Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, post graduate singing at The Royal College of Music, London. I’ve been a pro singer ever since, nearly 30 years with The Sixteen and performed with many other groups all over the planet.
XXRobert Evans
Artist statement: More recently I have become the musical director of The Brecon Singers, where I try to feed in my years of training and experience to the choir. We’ve had some excellent concerts, working with John Rutter was a highlight. I’m very excited that we’re off to sing in Edinburgh soon, sharing concerts with a choir (Jubilo) run by an old colleague. When is your next concert directing the Brecon Singers? Saturday 18th May, when we will be performing Mendelssohn’s Elijah, with both orchestra and four wonderful soloists. St Mary’s Church in Brecon will be filled with rousing and emotional music. One not to be missed. What has been your proudest moment? Personally - being present at the birth of my amazing daughter. Professionally - probably winning 2 Gramophone ‘Record of the Year’ awards. What would you class as your most memorable concert? I have two especially memorable concerts, both performances of Handel’s Messiah. I sang it with The Sixteen in the iconic Sydney Opera House, also it was the first “proper” piece I conducted with Brecon Singers. It is an extraordinary feeling conducting a professional orchestra and large choir. Have you have any future plans for your work? More of the same but better! What advice would you give a local artist? Look out of the window; and talk to people. This area is surrounded by great natural beauty and is home to an amazing mix of talented, stimulating people. What other local artists do you admire? Any who make a living from music. But especially Tim Cronin for his work with South Powys Youth Music.

Pets Corner For those of us who have animals at home – be it pets or stock, hairy, feathered or fluffy – they will be absolutely adored. Clare has been in contact with local businesses who specialise in the many different ways of caring for our animals. Some of my early readers will recall Dolly Parton and her fleet of chicks! Sadly they are no longer with us, but last year we re-homed some barn hens. They turned up with bald patches, pecked necks, and they weren’t used to being outdoors. Nearly a year later they have beautiful, full coats of dark ginger feathers which shine in the sun. They’ve turned out to be extremely sociable birds – even putting up with Cariad and Otis!

BUSINESS PROFILE
All For Paws All For Paws, a dog walking and house and pet sitting business, was set up by Megan Newman in 2017, backed by an obsessive love of dogs. Where are you based? I’m based in Glasbury, covering a 20-mile radius. Do you have ambitions to move or grow bigger? I’m happy where I am and very happy with the size of my business, which is busy and enjoyable. Having said that, I’m currently learning about a method of helping animals heal themselves which I’m finding fascinating and exciting and which I’m hoping will become another string to my bow. How many staff? Just little ol’ me and occasionally my mum (thanks mum). How much experience do you have? There have always been dogs as part of my family and when I was 15 I volunteered in a clicker training class which sparked my interest. Having walked over 40 different dogs in the past three years, all with individual requirements, I’ve learnt a sense of openness and trust which in turn allows for a confident, happy and communicative relationship with each dog. What is your greatest achievement in your business? Seeing that I’ve had a positive impact on my customers and their dogs. Knowing that I’ve helped some dogs be more confident, some dogs to become fitter and healthier and others to be able to get out, play and become happier. I’ve helped anxious dogs become calmer and others to learn to swim. I don’t feel I have one greatest achievement but my days are filled with lots of lovely little ones. Two lessons having your own business has taught you? Lesson 1, I can get out of bed before 8am… Lesson 2, love what you do! What has been the biggest help to building up your business? My mum, for giving me the confidence, nagging me to get on with things and helping with paperwork. But also, word of mouth – and a big thank you to all my lovely customers who have recommended me. List one thing you wish you could change about your business: Nothing, I love it.
What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you while doing your job? Dogs are always guaranteed to make me laugh, from the disgusting time when a dog who had run into a freshly slurried field and was so excited when I called her out that she jumped all over me, to the time when a dog didn’t realise the bank had ended and the river begun. It doesn’t matter, my days always contain a few laughs. Is there anything else you’d like people to know about your business? Despite all the fun I have I’m very aware that I’m looking after a member of someone’s family. From the first meet and greet in the relaxed atmosphere of their own home and surroundings I have the dogs’ best interest at heart and, when sitting, a willingness to fit into the dogs’ and owners’ regular routine. What have you done today to make you feel proud? Finally finished this profile!

Every bunny needs a buddy! Caring for pet rabbits means taking time to ensure their needs are met. Thinking about wild rabbits, we know that they are athletic, sociable and inquisitive creatures. We all want our pet rabbits to have healthy and happy lives. This means: • Friendship – living alone makes rabbits anxious and grumpy. Ideally introduce rabbits when very young. Gradually introducing adults to one another reduces conflict.
These foods help keep teeth in good condition – dental disease is one of the most common causes of rabbit illness. For lots of accurate and interesting information about caring for your rabbit, take a look at www.rabbitwelfare.co.uk or call into Hay Vets to pick up a free copy of On The Hop magazine.
• Space – a hutch is not enough! Room to stand upright, hop, explore and play is essential. Toys such as cardboard tubes and balls keep rabbits fit and entertained. • An interesting diet – at least 80% of rabbits’ food should comprise fresh grass (NOT lawn clippings) or hay. Add in foraged weeds (e.g. dandelion) and hedgerow plants (e.g. willow branches) for interest.

HowTheLightGetsIn HowTheLightGetsIn, the world’s largest philosophy and music festival, is returning to Hay for a very special 10th anniversary year. By day, this glorious stretch of the river Wye is host to thought-provoking debates and talks, awardwinning art and cinema exhibitions, and lunchtime yoga retreats. In the evening, the site transforms into a party with the hottest bands and cabaret acts, edgiest comedians, and unforgettable DJ sets. With headline performances from Anna Calvi, British Sea Power, Donovan and Zero 7, plus howlingly funny stand up from Phil Wang, Lou Sanders, Ahir Shah and more, this is one you can’t afford to miss! This year’s theme is Tribal Truths and New Wisdom, which will examine the key conflicts and underlying disagreements of our increasingly polarised political sphere, alongside a fascinating programme of arts, science and philosophy debates – from the meaning of life to the mysteries of dark matter. Speakers include Anna Soubry, Jon Lansman, Nicky Morgan, Helen Lewis, David Aaronovitch, Yasmin
Alibhai-Brown, Roger Penrose, Julian Baggini, Terry Eagleton, Helen Lederer, and many more. All this, plus intimate Open Platform events where festivalgoers dine with headline speakers, debate politics over lunch with award-winning journalists, and join in the discussion at freewheeling Philosophy Salons. Taking place Friday 24th to Monday 27th May, HowTheLightGetsIn features over 300 events, including over 100 debates and talks alongside 200 musicians and performers, comedians as well as banquets, film, parties, cabaret and more. There’s nowhere else in the world where you can dance into the night with the world’s leading thinkers to the sounds of Mercury Prize nominees. Get ready for a unique party like no other. Advance tickets for the full weekend are available from £144. Full weekend camping tickets start from £164, day tickets from £38. All students and under 25s are eligible for a 30% discount. News from Talgarth by William Powell, Powys County Councillor for Talgarth Over the last couple of weeks the lambs in the fields all around have been starting to thrive, enjoying the sun on their backs, rather than having to shelter from the rain, wind and occasional hail of earlier April. This year’s late Easter and the staggered school holidays on different sides of the border have also seen a significant rise in visitors to the area. This, combined with the anticipated Brexit disruption post 29th March, which failed to materialise, has led to a greater spend on the home front, which will doubtless have been welcomed by local businesses. Coming hot on the heels of the Easter break in early May is Talgarth Walking Festival, which celebrates its seventh birthday this year. Hosted by Talgarth Walkers are Welcome Group, the Festival runs from Friday 3rd May until Monday, 6th May, encompassing the early May Bank Holiday. Once again this year, it is a great opportunity for us to showcase our stunning countryside and to welcome local visitors and those from further afield. I know that many of the walks are proving extremely popular, but if you want to browse the programme and check availability, the website is: www.talgarthwalkingfestival.org. I am particularly looking forward to the opening and Festival reception on Friday 3rd May in the school hall at Ysgol y Mynydd Du. Entitled ‘Law, Landscapes and Livelihoods’, the talk will be given by my friend and colleague, County Councillor Roger Williams CBE, who represented Brecon and Radnorshire in Parliament from 2001 until 2015. Based on his parliamentary and agricultural experience, Roger will trace how local landscapes have evolved as farmers have sought to make a living and will assess the impact of innovation and both domestic and European legislation. It promises to be a treat. It is incredible that a whole year has passed since the official opening of Ysgol y Mynydd Du, when we were joined by Welsh Education Minister Kirsty
Williams AM and the Leader of Powys County Council, County Councillor Rosemarie Harris. The school together with the on-site library has become a genuine local hub as well as a significant venue for community events. Later in the month, on Monday 20th May from 6.45pm, it will also be the backdrop for a public meeting on superfast broadband in Brecon and Radnorshire, hosted by Kirsty Williams AM, with Lee Waters AM, Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Economy and Transport, as the principle speaker. Finally, this past weekend has been a proud one for Talgarth Town FC as the home game against Builth Wells Reserves gave us the point necessary to gain the Mid Wales League (South) Championship. Having seen turbulent times in the past 12 months, this is a remarkable result for the squad and congratulations are due to Chairman Chris Voyle, all the players, committee members and supporters. Special mention is due to Harry Sharman, who won the League top scorer award. It was also a particularly proud day for Talgarth Town President and lifelong supporter John Gwynne to witness his team’s success. In the meantime, if you have any feedback or issue of concern, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone on: 07703 112 113, by email: Cllr.William.Powell@powys.gov.uk, on Facebook or via Twitter @WmPowell2016. My next advice surgery is on Friday 3rd May from 5pm at Talgarth Tourist Information and Resource Centre. No appointment is necessary, but advance notice is sometimes helpful, if the issues you wish to raise are complex. In any event, I look forward to hearing from you on any issue that may be troubling you. Best wishes, William

News from Hay Castle Trust
Hay Castle at Hay Festival Architectural historian Richard Suggett will be giving an entertaining and enlightening talk about the history of Hay Castle at Hay Festival next month. This is a must-see for anyone interested in the work that goes into discovering and dating the buildings of a Medieval frontier society. Richard Suggett is Senior Investigator for the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales and has been closely involved in the project to restore Hay Castle since 2011. The talk will cover the earliest phase of the castle until the Owen Glyndwr revolt, the discovery of early houses of the Hay lordship, and finally the building of the ‘modern’ house in 1640. The work to restore Hay Castle has luckily coincided with advances in dating, and this talk will detail some of the problems of dating as well as recent successes. An exciting development has been the discovery of three tenants of the lordship of Hay. Tenants would have paid taxes to the lord of Hay which paid for the maintenance of the castle and the lordship. One of these tenants was Maestorglwyd in Llanigon, which dates to about 1420. This was the first time that a structure in the UK was successfully dated using a new isotopic dating technique. The talk will take place on Tuesday 28th May at 5.30pm and is detailed in the Hay Festival programme as Event 194.

News from Kirsty Williams I’ve recently visited a couple of local projects which I wanted to let you know about. The Side by Side Cymru project promotes peer support to help people with their well-being. I attended a Mid Powys Mind Awareness-raising event; if you know an organisation involved in this work there may be support available. Shared Lives carers open up their homes to provide support to people. I visited Mo and Ethan, who gave me a warm welcome, and it was fantastic to hear about Ethan’s progress. Shared Lives carers are being actively recruited. Additionally, with council tax remaining so high on the agenda I wanted to remind you of possible exemptions and discounts. Eligible people include those who: have a low income; live alone; are students; are disabled; are a carer; or have a mental impairment. A specific campaign has been launched regarding the latter group, in conjunction with MoneySavingExpert.com. Yn ddiweddar, rydw i wedi ymweld ag ambell brosiect lleol ac am sôn wrthych chi amdanyn nhw. Mae prosiect Side by Side Cymru yn hyrwyddo cefnogaeth gan gyfoedion i helpu pobl gyda’u llesiant. Mae gofalwyr Cysylltu Bywydau yn agor eu cartrefi i ddarparu cefnogaeth i bobl. Fe wnes i ymweld â Mo ac Ethan a roddodd groeso cynnes i mi, ac roedd yn wych clywed am gynnydd Ethan. Mae gofalwyr Cysylltu Bywydau yn cael eu recriwtio’n gyson. Yn ogystal, gyda’r dreth gyngor yn parhau mor uchel ar yr agenda, roeddwn i am eich atgoffa o esemptiadau a gostyngiadau posibl. News from Chris Davies -Your local MP
Since my election as Member of Parliament for Brecon and Radnorshire in 2015 and re-election in 2017. I have focused much of my work around putting Brecon and Radnorshire on the map. Which in short, means ensuring that those in government and business see our constituency as a place they should prioritise and do business with. I was extremely proud when the UK Government announced a fund of hundreds of millions of pounds for the Mid Wales Growth Deal. This deal is in its early stages with businesses and politicians in Mid Wales drafting plans of how best to use the money. I believe we must diversify our economy, by attracting high profile, up and coming businesses to set up in our towns and business/industrial parks. We have extremely low unemployment in Mid Wales, but we need to attract new businesses, businesses that offer sustainable well paid jobs. We have some fantastic sites on the edges of our rural towns that could attract brilliant businesses which will attract people from all over to see Brecon and Radnorshire as a place to live and work. With an ageing population here we need to diversify our workforce and look across the globe for the brightest and the best to move here. We are lucky to live in one of the most beautiful places in the country and we should all work towards ensuring that we create a thriving economy so that we can maintain and improve our stunning communities.

News from Black Mountains Lions It’s been a busy few months for the Black Mountains Lions. Following the Inter Schools Quiz which was won by Llangorse in January, we have been busy working with the Haygarth Surgeries in the fight against diabetes. Look out for the information board in both surgeries. Check out the Lions website information about Diabetes on: www.lionsclubs.org/ en/give-our-focus-areas/diabetes. Keep an eye out for our diabetes activities, which will take place in our area. We aim to organise different activities throughout the coming year in order to raise awareness of the condition. We have also been able to help Haygarth Surgeries with a donation of £1,000 towards replacing their two defibrillators with up-to-date versions. Other local donations include Ysgol Y Mynydd Du, which we presented with two playground tables with seating; the Gwernyfed Geckos Netball Club

everyone is different. Some prefer the comfort of their own bedroom, others may prefer to go to a library or public place like a café. Some may prefer music in the background, others may find it distracting. • Put the phone down! We all know how tempting it can be to ‘just check’ Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat. There are apps available to help students concentrate, such as ‘Forest’, where you plant a seed and over time a tree will grow. If you leave the app before the time is up the tree dies. Profits from this app go towards planting real trees in Africa via Trees for the Future. • Practise, practise, practise. Revision can be a highly personal process and it’s worth testing out a few different methods before finding an approach that suits you. At Gwernyfed we provide exam stress workshops run by professionals. For more information please contact enquiry@gwernyfed-hs.powys.sch.uk. Best of luck to all students – you have worked hard throughout the year and we are proud of you all!
News from Hay & District Dial-a-Ride A quiz was hosted recently by Jim Wesley in Cusop Village Hall to raise funds for us. The event was a great success, with the hall filled with enthusiastic quizzers, and everyone had a very enjoyable evening. It raised the tremendous amount of £306! A special thanks to Jim, who was quizmaster for the evening, and all of his helpers. We were delighted to be the lucky recipient of a grant from the National Lottery Awards for All scheme. This means that we can extend our monthly ‘bank bus’ to Brecon for another year, following a successful pilot scheme funded by Brecon Rotary Club. Due to Lynn’s retirement later this year, we have a paid vacancy in the office – please see our advert on page 2 for more details. Lynn will be a hard act to follow! On Thursday 23rd May we will be at Hay Market, so please come and say hello and have a chat with us if you are interested in joining as a member or as a volunteer. News from Haygarth Medical Centre Update on Triage The average wait time in the UK for a routine GP appointment remains at 13 days, with one in six practices saying they have had to stop offering routine appointments at some point during the year. Different approaches have been tried across the UK with triage of some kind being the most common. In Hay our wait time for a routine appointment has reduced from 2–3 weeks in 2016 to a few days in 2019. The triage nurses are highly trained healthcare professionals who are able to signpost patients to the right person. In some cases, they will pick up worrying symptoms that could indicate a serious illness and arrange blood tests and an urgent GP appointment. The triage system has reduced the number of missed appointments, but we do still have missed GP appointments – 30 during March 2019: this is the equivalent to two surgeries. If you are unable to keep or no longer require an appointment, please cancel it.
We have a triage nurse who works over the lunchtime period to enable patients at work to access the telephone triage service on their lunch breaks. The emergency clinic can see any number of patients on one day including home visits, and is covered by one doctor and one nurse. We try to keep this clear for severe infections, psychiatric emergencies and clinical emergencies. Due to the unpredictable nature of the workload unfortunately the wait time to be seen on the day varies widely. The local pharmacies do also offer a minor ailments service for less serious problems. As well as the emergency work we try to promote healthy lifestyles and prevent illness too. Some of our staff have been practising what we preach and have lost several stones in weight between them over the last year with a healthy approach to their diet and increase in exercise levels. Well done all! Our HCAs are happy to help our patients with lifestyle advice and a blood pressure check.

Hay Library is more popular than ever since its move to the school and thanks to Hay Festival it’s now open for three extra afternoons. Powys Cabinet proposed further library cuts but abandoned their plan following pressure from residents and opposition councillors. But the Library’s future is still in doubt, so HOWLS is exploring the idea of establishing a Community Interest Company to secure funding and negotiate a long-term commitment with Powys to keep Hay Library open.

New in Town Tad Cod Name of business: Tad Cod. Where are you based? We are opposite St Mary’s Church, on Brecon High Street. It was formerly known as the Coracle Fish Bar, which was closed for 18 months previous to Tad Cod opening. We have completely refurbished the restaurant and takeaway area, giving it all a fresh modern look. Why did you decide to open this business? We decided to reopen the shop because we were looking for an exciting new business venture and as a local family we felt that Tad Cod was much needed within the area! What are some of the challenges you have encountered? We found it challenging to source a good quality local supplier for our potatoes in the beginning, also finding suitable biodegradable packaging can be tricky too.
Serving high quality cod cooked fresh to order and locally sourced potatoes for our chips and other local produce, including our homemade chunky cod fingers, tartare sauce, mushy peas and onion rings. Gluten free fish and chips every Tuesday Eat in or Takeaway Telephone orders welcome

Is this the first business you have launched? No. How is this different than the others you have launched? There is not much difference as they are both in the food retail industry.
Swimming Pool & Jacuzzi
What type of education or experience helped you to open/run/manage this business? Over 20 years experience in catering within the hotel and pub trade and manufacturing of wholesale foods. Describe a typical day in your business: The day starts with the oil in the fryers being filtered, we then cut our fish, make our batter using our secret recipe, the potatoes are rumbled and cut fresh into chips, all our sauces are made up freshly - and our mushy peas too! We open then at 12pm, usually a busy lunch trade. Later on in the day we make up more sauces, check we have enough fish cut and chip more potatoes if needed, ready for our evening service. We close at 8pm and then it’s time to clean down ready to start it all again the next day!

A New Farm to Fork Experience Over the past few decades the gap between producer and consumer has grown further and further apart. We rely on supermarkets and corporations to tell us where our food has come from and who has produced it. On a small farm in Longtown this pattern is being broken by a first generation farming family. After working in Michelin starred kitchens around the world Chef Jake Townley, along with his brother-in-law Ed Dickson, returned home to the Black Mountains to set up their working farm and events venue, where they rear, butcher and cook native breed, high welfare animals. From home cured charcuterie to meat roasted over open flames they offer a true farm to fork experience for the whole family.

Festival of Books By a visitor to the HayDay Café There’s a long queue for signing books. Politics, fiction, actors, film, Ice cream cornets, cups of tea, Deck chairs, flags and words. We noticed the people coming and going. Rushing in, when the talks had finished – Rushing out, to hear their next talk booking which could be so different from the one before. Interest abounds. Festival of Books, full of busy people finding where to go, for refreshments, and in the rush people reading lots of books on benches at Hay Festival.
Wye Local would like to thank the volunteers at The HayDay Café for everything they do to help people living with dementia throughout the year. Contact Sue Hodgetts on 01497 822 523 for more info.
