Welcome to our October issue where we’ve entered Autumn. I adore the changing seasons, the nights drawing in, the fantastic colours that change all around us, I even like the rain providing I’m tucked up indoors with the wood burner in it’s full glory. This issue we showcase Christmas. Unlike some local shops, we’ve held off until now! It’s time to think about the seasonal party, be it a family gathering or works do! Turn to page for a bit of help. The organised will have the Christmas shopping already in their stride, others will just have it on their to do list. Each year all we ask is that you start the shopping local. We are very lucky to have boutique shops, independent stores and organised events that bring local crafts to light. Get what you can locally, then anything you can’t, go further afield or on-line. Local shops need our support to keep the towns alive. Use them or lose them. Remember if they go, local jobs will also go … Turn to page 34 for a bit of help.

News from Talgarth by Cllr. William Powell Powys County Councillor for Talgarth In the last couple of weeks, those looking for a belated burst of summer have been disappointed but, with the children back in school, the mornings distinctly chilly and the evenings lengthening, the colours of autumn are now quietly asserting themselves. The Bank Holiday weekend and our twentieth anniversary Talgarth Festival of the Black Mountains seems an age away. The Festival team has already held its debrief meeting, to reflect upoon what was best about this year’s event - and what can be done to make it even better for the future. The loyal band of volunteers is once again to be commended for their hard work and dedication - and deserve a break until the AGM later in the autumn. Anyone who would like more information on how to get involved - and bring fresh ideas for the future of the Festival - should contact the Chairman, Tony James on: (01874) 711289. And staying with the theme of volunteering, I took the opportunity earlier in the year to flag up the invaluable work of Brecon Dial-a-Ride to the Welsh Minister for Communities, Lesley Griffiths AM in a Plenary session of the National Assembly. I am pleased to say that the Minister accepted my invitation to visit Dial-a-Ride at their Brecon Headquarters - and this is due to take place on Monday, 12th October. The service provides a lifeline for so many elderly and vulnerable people locally - for shopping trips, hospital appointments and of course here in Talgarth to the weekly Luncheon Club. It is only right that their sterling efforts are recognised. Brecon & District disABLEd Club which runs Dial-a-Ride is always on the lookout for additional volunteers and anyone interested in finding out more should contact the General Manager, Lisa Marsh on: (01874) 624060.
public expenditure cuts, Powys County Council is beginning to plan its 2016/17 budget certain in the knowledge that painful expenditure and service reductions are on the horizon. One current proposal relates to the introduction of car parking charges in all Powys County Council owned sites. This, coupled with the suggestion of outsourcing car park management to an external agency, would have a very severe effect locally, as well as in other communities in Powys. I am currently working with local residents to oppose these retrograde proposals - please look out for details on: talgarth. fyinetwork.co.uk The longstanding plans to resurface the High Street, including a safe crossing adjacent to Primrose Pharmacy and traffic calming measures, are due to be implemented during October. I have been working to alert local businesses and those residents likely to be affected so as to minimise disruption. Please look out for details of any associated road closures and short term diversions that will be necessary. I hope that everyone will show a little patience as these long awaited works are carried out - as they are intended to improve public safety and the quality of life locally. In the meantime, if there is anything that I could help you with, please don’t hesitate to contact me on: 07703 112113 or by email : william.powell@ assembly.wales Alternatively, please come along to my next advice surgery on Friday, 2nd October from 5:00pm at Talgarth TiRC. No appointment is necessary - but advanced notice can help if the issues involved are complex. You can also pop into the TiRC at any time to request a call on any issue that is troubling you. Best wishes
With the new UK Conservative Government more committed than ever to its agenda of

CHRIS DAVIES MP
News from Chris Davies Your local MP
Hello from Westminster! It has been a very busy time in our area over the summer and I have had the pleasure of going here, there and everywhere visiting all parts of my constituency. My thanks to those who organised events that I attended including the Glasbury Duckrace, the Felindre Village Fate, the Talgarth Festival, Painscastle Fete and Llyswen and Boughrood Fate. My family and I had a great time and it is promising to see these events going from strength to strength, year on year. Part of the joy of attending these events is being able to post photos and updates on my website (www.chrisdavies.org.uk) and on Facebook. But all too often I run into trouble in doing so – because of the sluggish broadband speeds we receive here in Brecon and Radnorshire. I believe that it is unacceptable that we have connection speeds up to 12 times slower than in parts of London. This not only affects our businesses but also our home and social lives too. High speed broadband is essential for our catch-up TV services, our internet shopping and for our businesses to operate effectively – and is also one of the biggest issues in my mailbag. That was the point I put to Ed Vaizey, the Minster responsible for broadband rollout around the country, in a recent debate. Remembering his visit to Brecon in February, the Minister responded that he wanted to see the whole of our region connected as soon as possible.
Surgery times and other contact details will be published very shortly. In the meantime, if you have any issues you would like to discuss please contact me by way of:

So now is the time to continue pushing for better broadband in our area and I can assure you that I will be tireless in my pursuit of achieving higher speeds for all my constituents. That is where I need your help. I want to hear from you on your own experience of broadband speeds and I encourage you to get in touch and share your views with me. I then want to take each case to the Minister to make him see firsthand how many of us are affected by this issue.

CONIFERS Conifers are trees with unique scale-like leaves or needles and their seed-bearing cones are easily recognised. Conifers are a wonderful way of adding colour and structure to your garden and as most varieties are evergreen; conifers provide interest all year round, particularly through the bare winter months. There is an amazing choice of different shapes and shades which can grow into large, often very fast-growing trees, although there are many dwarf varieties including effective groundcover plants. Many conifers make good hedges too. From a small balcony with room for a container, to acres of grounds with space, conifers can add something truly special to any garden. A potted conifer can be used to brighten up a doorstep or balcony, whilst planted conifers can create height and add fantastic accent pieces to any garden. Conifers can offer a way to add something new and interesting to the garden at what is seen as a traditionally quiet time. Being hardy, easy to care for and long-lasting, conifers are the ideal choice for the margin gardener looking for a low maintenance but high impact plant. Providing you select the correct size for your garden, conifers require only a little pruning and watering. Autumn is an ideal time to plant new conifers to establish themselves early and get through the winter before sprouting earlier and stronger in spring compared with conifers planted in spring. Feeding your conifers annually in April with a Blood, Fish & Bone fertiliser will increase the growth rate and enhance the colour of the foliage.

Simply move the Goalposts! Did you get yourself into shape for the summer? Is it all starting to slide? Hang on! With each article I write for the Wye Local, I try to write from grass roots level, (as opposed to topics you could just Google). This community and I have worked together in fitness and in health for 17 years now, so I feel there is plenty of I can call upon from the ‘gym floor’ so to speak! Over any given year the numbers in the Club will wax and wane, and yes; reliant on the usual: ‘get a dress size smaller for Christmas’ (SORRY – WAY too early to be using that word!), or get ‘Bikini ready’ around May - and we’d be mad to ignore that. However it also often occurs at an individual level; that a client comes in, and in the Induction mentions a forthcoming wedding (attending, let alone being the bride!). The wedding, beach, xmas, skiing, mountain trek, et al, come and go and their momentum hits a brick wall. Their ‘driver’ has gone. However all is not lost! You simply think of another exciting event and then work as we do when Personal Training: Grab a yearly wall calendar, and mark it off! IN BIG (as Judge Rinder would say!). If you don’t have an event, find one, having
first identified what makes you tick: is it your BODY you want to improve – well think of something where it’ll be on show and book it in (we do group photoshoots as a driver – trust me that works!). If you want to be running fit – book a race – this can be a short distance event if needs be – don’t terrify yourself!). Then work backwards from this event and chunk it off into smaller periods of time. Then identify your end line, and work this into smaller periods to make it more manageable. So: you have a 5k run (end line) in 3 months. You chunk it down to monthly, or even weekly blocks if you prefer. You’ll aim for 3k in the first month, 4k the second (say) and you’ve nailed it by the event. This is very simplistic – you may need training advice, but it gives you management over your destination. You could apply these principles to weight loss, dress size, strength… just ensure that calendar is where you can see it and tell all your friends of your intentions. Better yet get them to do it too! THEN plot your next event, making it as fun and inspiring as possible. Next thing you know – you’re fit for life! Easy! The Thoughts of a Greengrocer It is now official. We all thought that August was wet and it certainly was - the wettest since such records have been kept. This does actually have a serious affect on anything that grows in the earth. One of the more noticeable differences this year is the tree fruit. Plums in particular have been very juicy but lacking a little in the flavour. All the usual local fruits have been good and I am promised some nice quinces when they are ready - we struggled to have enough last year so this is good. British Coxes apples started at the beginning of September but should really have been left a little longer. They were quite tart but nice and crisp. I tasted some cultivated blackberries (imported) the other day and was horrified - no real flavour and very sour; I should not have been impatient and just waited until the hedgerows are ready for picking. I hope that by the time you read this the local main crop potatoes will all be ready. We are lucky round here as the farmers grow a variety of different potato types so we have Desiree with a red skin that mashes so well, the old favourite (but harder to grow successfully) King Edwards for roasting and Maris Piper for chips. There are numerous other varieties, many of them being good all rounders which can be more suitable in the domestic kitchen. It has been quite noticeable the last two weeks that a lot of the Dutch aubergines and peppers have been most expensive, sometimes double the normal price. One of the reasons for this is the Dutch system of having a daily auction of what is available and a slight change in market conditions or quantities coming forward can have a serious effect. Usually within a few weeks crops from other areas save the day and the Dutch have to accept the lower normal price again. October is a real pick and pickle month - if you have never done it before it is well worth the effort and the pickles keep all through the winter and are lovely with cold roast meats and cheese. If you make your own you will soon appreciate the better flavour than factory produce and the lower cost. Not wishing to frighten you but as this issue comes out there will only be three months till Christmas!

Jokes of the month by father & son (Colan & James Badham) A husband and wife were driving through Swansea. As they approached Pontarddulais they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then they stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked the blonde waitress, “Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?” She leaned over the counter and said, “Burrr-gerrr Kiiing.” Instead of “the John,” I call my toilet “the Jim.” That way it sounds better when I say I go to the Jim first thing every morning.

square of old newspaper sufficed for wrapping material.” What an excellent memory for us to share and enjoy. I’m sure most of us have similar stories to tell about the tastes, smells and sounds of Hay in their childhood. We would love to hear all your tales. Please contact Hay History Group so that your story can be preserved and enjoyed for generations to come. Alan Nicholls, Chair of Hay History Group The above photo of Maddy’s delivery van in Hay brought back a memory, as a lad growing up in London, of the marvellous smell of the bakers in the very early morning. The fresh baked bread being packed into the horse-drawn cart ready to deliver around the town. That rich yeasty smell and the taste of a large doorstep slice was truly wonderful with butter and some of mums homemade jam. Taste and smells are especially good at reviving our memories. So here is a memory of Mr. Price from “Memories of Old Hay” which was reprinted in Haywire in July 1986. “The first half-penny of my pocket money invariably found its way into the receptive hand of Mrs Eves who lived at 13 Lion Street. My grandparents lived close by so that the aroma of her toffee making factory was wafted along the street. My sense of smell was good and I made my way like a Bisto kid. Mrs Eves boiled toffee for generations of schoolchildren. The boiling was done on a small range in the front room. On the table would be laid out samples of her wares, mouth-watering displays on saucers of coconut ice, brandy snaps, humbugs, and rock..... Several times I caught her at the later stages of manufacture of the toffee when she would be manipulating it over a very large nail in the back kitchen. The dexterity with which she caressed and handled the toffee, looking like large skeins of wool, was unbelievable. It was pulled, stretched, thrown back over the nail in a continuous motion until she was satisfied it was ready to be cut up with a pair of scissors to provide lumps at 10 a penny.... a small

Protecting wildlife for the future
Wild in October
The “Beefsteak fungus” shown is edible and also is has an unusual economic value as its attack on oak makes the wood a darker, richer colour and hence more valuable as “brown oak” for the furniture industry. Fungi are an important and largely hidden part of the ecosystem and many plants, particularly Orchids, depend on their presence to thrive. They are more abundant than we realise as the toadstool or bracket we see is just a small part of the larger organism living underground or in rotting wood.
Beefsteak fungus Fistulina hepatica I apologise for the gruesome looking picture but this is just one of the more unusual things that you might see if you attend the Brecknock Wildlife Trust ‘Fungal Foray’ later this month. David Mitchell, who will lead the walk, found this delicacy on the 2013 foray as well as plenty of other toadstools and other fungi.
The Fungal Foray is on Saturday 24th at BWT Pwlly-Wrach nature reserve, Talgarth. Meet in Talgarth car park so that we can travel to the nature reserve together due to limited parking. Cost £3 per adult, suitable for all ages. The walk starts at 2pm. John Crellin.

39th Caledonian Market in Brecon
On Saturday 7th November the Rotary Club of Brecon will hold its annual Caledonian Market as always on the first Saturday in November. The first took place in 1977 and not a year has been missed since then. It has become an institution for the people of Brecon and is looked forward to with great anticipation. The floor and tables in the Market Hall are stacked with items such as books, toys, clothes, furniture, other household goods and
garden produce all donated by local people for sale at bargain prices. All the proceeds go to supporting mostly local charities. Members of the club collect all the items in the weeks before the sale. Over the weekend of the Market they are assisted by a large number of enthusiastic volunteers who come back year after year and who are essential to its success. Last year more than ÂŁ10,000 was raised for deserving causes.

I did it!!! As I write, it’s exactly 21 months to the day that I stopped smoking. Back in December 2013 I thought it was about time that I grew up and took responsibility for my health and bank balance. I had given up quite a few times before, but never got past two or three months really, and this time, when I got to four months I just knew I had cracked it. I sort of knew as soon as I gave up that this time it would be for good, for ever, and it was!
holidays. Been to the Greek Islands twice now! I’ve had to dive into it occasionally for car expenses, etc, but thank goodness I’ve been able to save that money and not just thrown it on the bonfire, so to speak. I don’t cough any more and I - and my bank balance - feel a lot healthier. You can’t smoke anywhere these days anyway and life being a nonsmoker is much easier. If you are thinking about stopping smoking for Stoptober, then do go and see Stefan. He can really help. Article by Clare Williams
I got help from Stefan at Primrose Pharmacy in Talgarth. He and Demelza are always so friendly and helpful and it’s a lovely shop. Stefan gave me some clear nicotine patches to use, starting off with the large ones and ending up with the small ones. I went once a week I think. If you want to stop smoking go and have a chat with Stefan and find out which nicotine replacement product suits you. Since I gave up smoking I’ve been saving £35 per week. It automatically goes from my current account to my savings account. It goes towards
If you are a smoker, the best way of reducing future health problems is to quit. October sees the return of Stoptober and if this prompts you to give up smoking, there is help available locally. Primrose Pharmacy has a free service to help you quit. Our service consists of up to 12 weeks of support, including whichever nicotine replacement products you need to help break the smoking habit. Because of the potential future health benefits, this service is fully funded by the NHS, so any money you save from not buying cigarettes, you keep. Garth House, High Street,Talgarth, LD3 0PF

The Dancing Floor A Llyswen film-maker is mounting a campaign to get start-up money for a feature film set in our area. Lyn Webster Wilde has worked with other local people, including top cinematographer Richard Greatrex, to make a short ‘pilot’ film, The Dancing Floor, which includes stunning drone shots of Brechfa pool and scenes at historic Ciliau House near Erwood. Brecon schoolgirl Isha Gurung plays Sita, the heroine as a child, in the story which has its roots in the Mabinogion. Says Lyn ‘Hay Castle hosted a launch for our campaign and people have stepped up with offers to be extras, to help with social media and with donations to our crowdfunding site (http://igg.me/at/Dancingfloor). We plan to run drama workshops in local schools featuring these wonderful tales, to find children who could perform in the film. The film will showcase the beauty of our landscape and the enigmatic magic of our Welsh myths.’

News from...
She loves cycling along with her music blaring away, even off road so she and her Mum can walk the dog.
Black Mountains Lions Club When Cassidy Kelleher, who has Cerebral Palsy and Cystic Fibrosis, got on her 1st bike (funded by the Variety Club) it was amazing as she was only 3 years old but it was the first time she had ever moved independently. However after 5 years she has grown out of it and her Mum, Dawn, tried to raise funds for a new one. Funding was not immediately available and as exercise is so important to Cassidy, not only for her muscles and mobility, but also for her lungs, Dawn then approached the Black Mountains Lions who stepped in and bought the Bike for a cost of £2,900. It’s a brilliant Bike from Tomcat Trikes, metallic, sparkly green and splits into 3 for transporting. Adjustable parts enable the bike to be altered as Cassidy grows over the net 5 years.
When she took it to her primary school in Hay-onWye a little boy was heard to say that “it’s the most awesome bike he’s ever seen and he’d like one too!! LOOK OUT FOR THE BRIGHT GREEN TRIKE.” Bronllys Hospital & Community League of Friends The launch of our book, Memories of Bronllys Hospital was very successful. Dame Shan LeggeBourke, who launched the book had been pleased to see a photo of her grandfather with the king when the hospital was opened. For many people who had contributed to the book, the event was like a reunion of old friends. For two people it had been 48 years since they had last seen each other and another two it had been 30 years. The League of Friends were delighted when Dame Shan LeggeBourke agreed to be our Honorary President. So far we have sold well over 350 books, which is quite incredible in so short a time. Please put our Autumn Fair in your diaries. Saturday November 14th in Talgarth Church Hall from 2pm.

Fairtrade Hay
Glasbury Get-Together Club
Fairtrade Hay are screening the new inspirational documentary ‘The True Cost’, a shocking look at the fashion industry and how unethically made and sourced the majority of our clothing is. The screening is at The Globe in Hay on Friday 23rd October 2015. A fair trade fashion show follows, with clothes from Eighteen Rabbit, Number Two and Flow, and accessories from Jump 4 Timbuktu (available from The Haymakers in Hay). Louise Davies, a member of Fairtrade Hay and co-owner of Eighteen Rabbit says, ”We’re delighted this important film is going to be screened in Hay. I’m sure people will remember the Rana Plaza tragedy in Bangladesh which revealed the human cost of fast fashion. Hopefully this film will remind people to think before they buy. It will also be a great opportunity to see the fantastic fair trade clothing that is available on our doorsteps.” The event begins at 7pm, film starting at 7.30pm.Tickets are £7.50 each, price includes a glass of Fairtrade wine. They are available from The Globe, Eighteen Rabbit or email:amhew@outlook.com
Our thanks to Philip Morgan from Brecknock Wildlife Trust who gave us a lot of wonderful and surprising information on the life of Bats at our August meeting. A much enjoyed afternoon, and many questions put forward from our members. It is hoped that we can arrange a return visit in 2016. Next club meeting is on Wednesday 21st October (please note this is the correct date) as we could not hire the hall on the 28th as it is the start of Glasbury Arts preps. Time as usual 2.30-4.30pm when we hope to enjoy and be amused by member participation… it can’t happen without you. Please bring along your favourite Poems and Tales to tell. Raffle and Tea later. Small items donated for prizes always appreciated. NEW MEMBERS WELCOME. Further information: please ring Gloria 01497 847726 or Judith 01497 847274. we will be hosting our second visit from the Ladies of the Monday Choir! This year’s entertainment features our local very own Pat Darlison, Alyson Hearn and 2 male soloists as well. The show will be held at Glasbury Village Hall on Friday 16th October. Doors open at 7pm and starts at 7.30pm. As well as the Choir and Guest soloists there will be light refreshments and of course, a prize raffle. Proceeds will be shared between the Play Area and the Village Hall. Everyone welcome to come along and enjoy an evening of locally based entertainment with friends, neighbours and family. Tickets are only £5.00 and available on the door. The other big news is the 4th Annual Duck Race, held on August Bank Holiday Saturday, was a big success. This year’s wonderful posters caught everyone’s attention as well as the much appreciated articles in The Messenger and Wye Local (Thanks both!) The sun was out, the number of people attending was our best ever, the burgers and hot dogs scrumptious and, it seems, everyone had a great time. In addition, the Fire Service attended and raised about £300 for
the Firefighter’s Charity. The Play Area made about £600 after expenses. Thanks to Chris, Sue and Stuart A, Paul G, Matt, Brenda, Kath, Pat, The Fire & Rescue Service and all those who came along and/or bought and sold Ducks. Take a bow folks! This years Duck Race winners were: 1st Prize – Boo George, 2nd Prize -Mr &Mrs Jones, Dorstone, 3rd Prize – Brian Richards. Last Duck Home ( Wooden Spoon award) -Tom Symonds. It is believed 30 Ducks made a dash for freedom... So, if, you are canoeing on the Wye keep your eyes peeled... If any parents/residents would like to help out with mowing, publicity and helping run a stall or get involved with 2016’s Duck Race please contact our secretary – Pat Yeomans on 01497847640. What we can’t do alone we can do together. Lastly, do drop into the Play Area (Behind Foyles), it is a great space for young and old alike. NB. The basketball hoop (+ ball) is getting used

The performance of some pupils regardless of ability to overcome barriers to learning has been outstanding. Our committed staff have all given of their time to ensure these young people reach their potential. Pupils attended revision classes after school and during the holidays, and, with no study leave, attended lessons at school until mid June up to their final exam’ ‘We wish all Year 11 the very best for the future, whether at Gwernyfed Sixth Form or College. We thank them for their contribution to school life’ Hay Castle Trust The plans for the restoration of Hay Castle have continued to evolve since initial concepts for the restoration of the Castle were shared with the community in February and during the Hay Festival in May. Additional consultations have been held with area residents and experts including BBNP, Cadw and Powys County Council. Questions were raised about car parking, access, community use, events and the conservation of the ruins, and many discussions and suggested ideas have helped shape the project.
One of the most visible changes has been in the design of the roof. Initially a glazed modern intervention on the south side was proposed to house a new stairwell and lift. Feedback on the plan, as well as research which revealed evidence of the original structure, led to the design being altered. An ingenious plan and thoughtful placement for the lift has enabled the team to propose a much more sympathetic design resulting in a more traditional restoration of the roofline. Hay Castle Trust will hold another public information day at the Castle on Saturday 10th October. The main room of the Castle will be open from noon onward for everyone to have a look at the latest developments in the plans and talk to members of the team. There will be two presentations (at 4pm and at 6pm) which will describe the plans, the time scale for the restoration, and what is expected to happen next. Questions from the community about the project are welcome, and there will be opportunities to find out how people can help with the project, volunteer, or even take part in an archaeological dig. Contact info@haycastletrust.
