Antigua & Barbuda– the gems of the Caribbean Caribbean Homes & Lifestyle magazine was first published in 2006, and this highly regarded real estate publication spanned many of the Eastern Caribbean islands. It also highlighted guest islands from further afield. The 2012 edition of Caribbean Homes & Lifestyle has been merged with Food & Drink Guide.
2
This special edition magazine entitled CaribbeanHotProperty.com is 100% Antigua & Barbuda. The focus of this edition is a one-stop guide to beautiful and unusual places to stay. In the following pages we proudly showcase self-catering holiday accommodation and boutique hotels from the modest to the simply stunning. We know that this will be of valuable assistance to families, friends and everyone lucky enough to visit our friendly islands. The lifestyle, culture and natural beauty of Antigua & Barbuda are what make them such a great destination to visit and live here. Our islands are a safe, warm and a comfortable piece of paradise, well developed, yet unspoilt. We pride ourselves on living at a slower pace, yet we are nimble enough to change with the times. Testament to this is our increasing focus on the world’s oldest and most powerful energy source, solar power, and the increasing viability of renewable energy. As the world struggles to come to terms with the availability
of energy, food and water, Antigua & Barbuda stand well positioned to move toward a more sustainable environment. Antigua is truly a fantastic place, but it must be said that if you have not been to Barbuda you are missing a great experience. Barbuda is the ‘destination unspoilt’. Fiercely protected from over development by Barbudans, it remains the benchmark for a breathtaking destination and is comparable to nowhere else. For our lifestyle articles we look at the great works provided by the Antigua Yacht Club and our very own Olympic hero Karl James, teaching the children to sail. We also look at ABSAR and give thanks for their dedication to saving lives. We highlight the charitable works and spirit of sharing offered by the Inet International Pairs Golf Tournament. And we celebrate the fact that Antigua & Barbuda now welcome thousands of couples who choose our islands as their wedding destination every year. Paradise remains the best place to start a new life together. Dreams are realized by those who dare…

Wedding Experience Antigua Barbuda
Antigua is the destination of choice for many romantic couples. Last June Antigua celebrated its 5th year of promoting this island destination with “June is Romance Month”, and according to BRIDES Magazine the twin islands are considered one of the world’s top 20 honeymoon destinations, are among the top 10 Caribbean Honeymoon Destinations, and one of 10 Romance Retreats in the Caribbean. ouples are becoming more and more inventive about the place they choose for their wedding ceremony. Some choose a remote mountain top, the bottom of the Grand Canyon or a helium balloon in the sky, but a sparkling white beach at sunset in the Caribbean is the ultimate wedding destination. Antigua and Barbuda offer the best of these destinations. Whether you choose a wedding and honeymoon package or arrange your big day at a self-catering villa, you will never forget your Caribbean wedding day.

Grande Pineapple Beach, Hawksbill Rex Resorts, Jolly Beach Resort and Spa, Sandals Grande Antigua, Sugar Ridge Hotel and The Inn at English Harbour offer some of the best wedding and honeymoon packages on Antigua. The Copper and Lumber Store Hotel in English Harbour has an authentic 18th century charm that may be just what you are looking for. And for a very casual affair, Dennis’s Restaurant and Bar on Ffryes Beach has built a ravishing little gazebo on the beach that will have you happily wading in the shallows after the ceremony and trashing your dress, if you choose to do so, as a symbol of finality and commitment to your partner.

One of the most memorable weddings I have ever attended took place at a private hilltop villa in Antigua. The bride wore a sarong with hibiscus in her hair, and the bridegroom wore shorts and a Tee shirt. The food was prepared by family and friends, and the couple were given a rousing sendoff to spend the night at a romantic hotel on the beach at Half Moon Bay. It was a simple ceremony, happy, moving, and entirely satisfactory.

Residency on the twin islands is not a requirement for visitors who want to get married here. The staff at the resort or hotel you choose will be able to advise you, and you should arrive on the island at least 1 day ahead of the ceremony to process the necessary documents. You’ll need to bring with you passports and birth certificates; for divorcees, originals of a Decree Absolute, and for widows and widowers, prior marriage and death certificates, and a Deed Poll in the case of a name change. A notarized affidavit of consent signed by both parents is required for persons under 18 years of age.

Wherever you choose to stay on our beautiful twin islands, and however you choose to organize your wedding, you will find that the people on these islands love the happiness that comes with a romantic wedding. They will wish you health and happiness in your new life. Come to Antigua and Barbuda to start your new life.

Can the Caribbean secure
a sustainable energy future? written by John Birk, a passionate environmentalist
I
n 2007 with a population of less than fifteen million the Caricom countries spent US12 billion dollars on importing oil!
This begs the question; with the Caribbean’s abundant renewable re-sources of sun and wind, to mention just two, why are we still wasting our wealth importing increasingly expensive and ultimately scarce fossil fuels? Imagine, even if only half of this imported fuel could be replaced by renewables, US6 billion eventually would become available to improve infrastructure, education, medical and social services in the region.
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
Furthermore, as people start to generate their own power and sell the excess back to local power companies for resale, and as people also adopt electric cars, the extra cash they will find in their pockets will be spent with local merchants. It’s a no lose situation, improving our economy and at the same time creating new jobs.
171
So why is it so difficult or even illegal in some Caribbean countries for people to generate and sell back sustainable energy?
urces of newable reso abundant re ’s importing an lth be ea ib w ar r With the C still wasting ou e w e ar fuels? il hy ss d... w y scarce fo sun and win and ultimatel ive ns pe ex y increasingl
The truth is that this is a worldwide problem. In many countries there are vested interests with no desire to give up the wealth bestowed upon them by the world’s demand for fossil fuels. These interests include oil producers, oil companies, oil distributors and sellers, and even some governments.
Energy is a US6 TRILLION dollar a year business. It’s the perfect business; and with fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas, you can own the source, distribution and point of sale. And with a cartel like OPEC you can set any price you desire. For example, during the 1973 oil embargo the price of oil increased from US$3 to US$12, yet the cost of extracting a barrel of Saudi oil remained unchanged at 27 cents! For many governments this is also a system to be desired. Fossil fuels attract a plethora of taxes and these taxes can be increased without attracting too much resistance from voters, who tend to blame greedy suppliers or oil companies. You will hear a plethora of reasons regarding why renewables will not work. There is a constant barrage of disinformation being spread through advertising, articles in magazines, on news and TV shows, all financed by people who possess almost unlimited sources of money.
1. - Renewables such as solar and wind power are intermittent and cannot reliably supply all our energy needs. Taken at face value this statement appears to be true. However, advanced battery technology allows this intermittent power to be stored for future use. Thus the claim is false. The truth is we save money which stays in the local economy; it stays in the pockets of local consumers who will spend it with local merchants.
January 6th, 2011 was a particularly good day in Spain, and 75% of the country’s energy needs on that day were supplied by clean renewable energy. And almost 45% of the electricity in Portugal’s grid will come from renewable sources this year, up from 17% just five years ago. 2. - Solar and wind power are too expensive. The term “grid-parity” in the parlance of renewable energy is the point at which it is cheaper to generate your own electricity than it is to buy it from the electricity company. In the US, Canada and many other countries grid is still cheaper. However, in Hawaii where grid electricity is US0.17 cents per kilowatt-hour it is cheaper to install a solar system, sell excess power to the electrical company during the day and then buy some back at night. As long as you have a properly sized solar system, you would not only never have to pay for electricity again, but you could actually get a check every month from the utility company. Here in the Caribbean where the cost of electricity can exceed US0.40 cents per kWh we have passed the grid-parity point many years ago. 3. - Solar panels will burn out shortly after the 20 year guaranty runs out, and furthermore, they will never generate enough energy to make up for the energy used to manufacture them. The longevity claim is patently false. Universities in Europe and North America tested modern solar panels that reached 30 years of age in 2008 and it was proven that 90% of the solar panels retained more than 80% of their capacity after 30 years. How many fossil-
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
I will list some of the reasons and debunk some tactics used by those who desire to slow or stop the development and growth of renewable energy technology. To highlight a few examples of the disinformation the public is subjected to:
Some countries have already made a significant impact on their energy needs by developing renewable sources of energy. Denmark now supplies as much as 24% of its energy needs from wind power.
39
fueled motors can claim that kind of reliability after 30 years? As to the claim that solar panels will never generate enough electricity to make up for the energy needed to make them, that was true in 1955 when Western Electric produced a 2% efficient solar cell costing US$1,785/Watt. Today with much higher efficiency, solar costs have dipped as low as US0.78 cents per watt, and the energy payback can be as little as 30 to 60 days.
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
4. - Utility companies say they have to keep running their fossil-fueled plants in order to pay off the 10 or 20 year loans that were required to build them. On the face of it this statement sounds reasonable, but consider the following example. A 7.5 megawatt power plant costs US8 million dollars to purchase and finance over ten years, and this plant will burn US4 million dollars per year in fuel oil, and will incur maintenance costs totaling US40 million over 10 years. It actually would be cheaper to mothball this plant and invest in renewable energy.
40
5. – Switching from fossil fuels to wind and solar power will cost jobs. That is what economists call creative destruction; old industries fade and fail, new industries generate newer and more numerous jobs. Where would we be, after all, if our forefathers had banned the harvester to save jobs on the land, or banned the car to save the jobs of buggy whip manufacturers? Investing in renewable energy technology will create new jobs. Continuing to base our economies on the use of
increasingly expensive and rapidly depleting fossil fuels will lead eventually to economic disaster. 6. – There is no cost-effective way of storing electrical energy. Current battery technologies are becoming more affordable. More importantly, new technologies such as MIT Dr. Donald Sadoway’s liquid metal battery (14 acres of these 1 by 3 meter units are predicted to store 13 gigawatts of electricity or enough to run New York city for 24 hours!), ceramic batteries by EEStor and CoorsTek among others are in the pipeline and when they arrive everything will change. Every house will have its own electrical storage units.
“
So why is it so difficult or even illegal in some Caribbean countries for people to generate and sell back sustainable energy? ...The truth is that this is a worldwide problem..., but in the next 5 to 10 years, we can become completely self-sustaining in terms of our energy needs... ”
To summarize, here in the Caribbean we can reduce our importation of oil by as much as 50% using currently available renewable energy technology. As new energy storage technology comes to market in the next 5 to 10 years, we can become completely self-sustaining in terms of our energy needs, and stop our addiction to oil. www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
In the future, the economics of self-generated electricity in the Caribbean, combined with greater acceptance of electric cars, will be so favourable that consumers will be able to borrow the funds necessary to install their own system and pay off the loan in 2 to 5 years. After that the billions that flowed into the pockets of the richest 1% will start to flow into the pockets of millions of citizens. As any economist knows, money flowing to the middle class and the poor benefits the economy 3 to 5 times more than giving the same amount to the ultra rich. It’s going to be a bright future for the people of the Caribbean.

The Working with Art of
Wood
J
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
im McComas took his first woodworking class at school in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of ten. He learned to work with small hand tools, and had his first lessons on the band saw, the least dangerous of the larger power tools. Liking the feel and the scent of different woods, and intrigued by the possibilities for creating things with wood, Jim carved his first piece of art – a 3 inch high replica of his dog Sparkie, a young Cocker Spaniel with long silky ears and a very erect tail. Many, many years later, this small carving is still in Jim’s possession, a nostalgic reminder of a carefree childhood.
42
In the years following this modest beginning, Jim gradually took on more ambitious projects, always working in wood, always carving, not yet willing to tackle the different, but equally challenging discipline of building furniture. As a young man seeking inspiration for his hobby, he was much influenced by the ancient Mayan stone carvings of animals in the Anthropological Museum of Mexico, in Mexico City, and by the work of the contemporary English sculptor Barbara Hepworth. His smooth, striking work in ebony wood of a powerful coiled snake is based on an early Mayan piece. His much larger, highly imaginative piece, Bird Woman, with its sinuous piercings and aggressive curved beak, is directly attributable to Hepworth’s influence. Then, in the 70s, he lost both his parents in a car accident in Spain, and carved an emotionally charged piece depicting them together, which he called Heads. It was after this work was finished that Jim
began to turn to furniture making, and to the challenge of turning wood on a lathe. Many beautifully crafted pieces of furniture followed, including a long, low oak chest with linenfold carving on the side panels, which was exhibited at the Corcoran Museum show of advanced student art in Washington DC in the early 80s. He gradually acquired the tools he needed to work on larger projects, and bought a lathe, teaching himself to turn bowls and platters, vases and urns. He experimented with combinations of light and dark woods, and with inlays. He began to carve and turn household implements like salad servers and the bowls to go with them. He explored the craft of Chinese joinery, and built lovely small tables with carved tops, upturned feet, and complex hidden joints. And as he grew older he began to realize that when he retired he wanted to continue to find ways to work with wood.
Jim McComas is now retired from the business world and settled in Antigua. He continues to work with wood, and has repaired and restored many unusual pieces, meticulously returning them to their past splendour. One of the most memorable pieces to pass through his hands here in Antigua was an 18th century mahogany veneered sideboard with distinguishing Hepplewhite satinwood inlay, discovered by the owner at an estate sale in Antigua, and probably made by a Hepplewhitetrained craftsman who came to the West Indies to build furniture for the great houses of the sugar barons. He hopes to find other such pieces, and to return them to their original glory.
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
The next phase in Jim’s development was carefully thought through, and led to a very rewarding period in his life. He apprenticed himself in his spare time to a small woodworking shop in Baltimore. The shop restored antique furniture for local museums and for individuals with beautiful old inherited furniture, handed down for generations, and often in dire need of repair. Many of the skills required to restore these pieces were new to him. These included milling and preparing raw wood, fine joinery, hidden reinforcement joinery, complicated assembly and glueing, veneering
and inlay veneers, finishing with French polish, an 18th Century hand-rubbed finish, and finishing with oil. He studied the construction of each piece that he worked on, and the period in which it was made, learning to recognize many different woods and the structural details of each period as he worked. He learned to correct the damage inflicted on many fine pieces by inexperienced carpenters attempting to make clumsy repairs to them over the years.

INET International Pairs More Than A Golf Tournament
Gone are the days when golf was seen as a sport for retirees and businessmen with time on their hands; today’s golfer is probably aged anywhere from their early teens to their eighties, playing in all weathers, pitting their skill against 18 holes.

For the past three years serious amateur golfers in Antigua & Barbuda have had an opportunity to participate in the INET International Pairs held at the Cedar Valley Golf Course in Antigua. Winning this tournament means more than bragging rights; in fact the winning pair proceeds to represent Antigua & Barbuda at the International Pairs Tournament held annually in Scotland.
In the three years since the tournament began Barthley and his fellow golfers have raised thousands of dollars for worthy causes and individuals. This year’s recipient is former West Indies cricketer Winston Davis, who, following a tragic accident over 13 years ago, became a tetraplegic. The golf community dug deep and raised close to EC$30,000 to assist Mr Davis. Barthley is extremely pleased by the response. He said: “It is very heartening to see
The INET International Pairs is also becoming synonymous with celebrity guest players, from cricket great Brian Lara and former premiership footballer Dwight Yorke to Franklyn Stephenson and Jeffrey Dujon to NBA Coach Jim Todd. “The beauty of golf is that it spans age, ethnicity and sport. It attracts a lot of sportspersons, both retired and active and this allows for the development of partnerships that can benefit Antigua and Barbuda through exposure and linkages with sporting bodies and associations,” added Barthley. For Zorol Barthley and Golf Experience Caribbean the Antigua & Barbuda golf experience is just the beginning, especially when it combines a passion for golf with an opportunity to help the less fortunate.
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
Antigua & Barbuda’s participation in this tournament is directly attributable to Zorol Barthley, founder and CEO of Golf Experience Caribbean. A one time cricketer and administrator, as well as a local businessman, Zorol Barthely combines passion for golf with a love for helping others, and this separates the INET International Pairs from many other golf tournaments. Golf Experience Caribbean owns the franchise rights for the tournament in the Caribbean and Barthely is excited about getting other islands involved.
that businesses and sports persons are so willing to help raise funds even in these economically trying times. We had contributions from local businesses to regional hotels and golf courses and a personal item donated by Sir Vivian Richards.” Barthley added that it is important for him to always have a cause that will benefit from this growing event. “Our golfers have an opportunity to participate against the best amateurs at one of the premier golf courses in the world, and at the same time promote our country and still give back. It’s a great feeling to be able to use what we love as a platform to help others.”

e hear the terms “going green” and “eco-friendly options”... but what do these phrases really mean to us in Antigua & Barbuda? We are familiar with the effects of climate change and the impact it can have on our daily lives: increased numbers of hurricanes, coastal erosion and the invasion of foreign species, to name a few. The question we must ask ourselves as we begin to understand the implications of these changes is ‘What can I do to make a difference?’ The answer is surprisingly simple... ranging from taking the first small steps to help reverse these effects on a personal level, to involvement in major national and international projects that will noticeably reduce our carbon footprint in the world. We are blessed, in Antigua & Barbuda, with year round sunshine, constant trade winds and resourceful, resilient people...all components for making ‘going green’ a reality. Our government is currently updating legislation to exempt certain materials and equipment from various duties and taxes if they are imported for alternative
and renewable energy projects. The general public and businesses involved in such projects will be able to apply for these tax and duty concessions on a list of 28 specific materials and items of equipment by the end of 2011. These concessions will add much needed new incentives to the development of renewable technologies, ultimately making them more attractive to the consumer. Individuals can make a difference also, can alter their personal carbon footprint, by adhering to the concept of the “3 Rs”: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Here are a few examples of the vast array of options to choose from in pursuing this concept. Reduce: Limit importation of produce by buying local greens, vegetables and fruits in season at your grocery or supermarket, from local farmers, or even from the numerous ‘back yard’ mini-farms. Avoid purchasing exotic and possibly bio-engineered imported produce. Not only would you reduce the amount of energy needed to transport these items to your home or restaurant in Antigua
& Barbuda, but you would also stimulate the local economy and encourage greater consumption of our home-grown food gems. Reuse: Many of us can recall walking as children to the corner store with shopping money and a cloth shopping bag in our hands. If shops today would ask their customers to bring their own bags, and if we would use reusable bags when going shopping we would all be helping to reduce the number of unbiodegradable plastic bags that end up in landfills, or littering the countryside where they can collect water and become breeding grounds for mosquitos, or landing in the ocean creating hazardous conditions for marine life. Place your own reusable shopping bags in readily accessible places such as in your car or handbag, or near your front door to make this even easier.
There is, perhaps, a perception that companies, offices and other corporate entities are exempt from going green; that this is a “tree hugger’s” dilemma. On the contrary, going green can make a big positive impact on the very important bottom line. From installing
Green Eco Management Ltd. (G.E.M.) provides services to individuals and companies looking for ways to be mindful of the way they use materials, resources and energy in everyday life. The company’s director, Sascha Mercer-Severin, offers an exciting range of environmentally friendly products made of recycled and/or reusable materials for individuals and companies. G.E.M. also offers services such as tailor-made educational programmes and home/ corporate eco-friendly overhaul projects resulting in cost and carbon savings. Sascha’s company philosophy is based on the principle that future positive effects have their roots in the actions of the present.

Recycle: Antigua is fortunate to have a recycling plant that accepts certain types of plastics, cardboard, aluminium and lead batteries. Many people have already reduced the volume of their household garbage by up to a quarter by depositing their recyclables at this not-for-profit plant in Carlisle. Quite a few schools have actively participated in recycling projects and by doing so have helped to stimulate young minds to be conscientious and creative in this field. Businesses such as hotels, restaurants, beauty salons and other service outlets can also reduce their garbage tipping fees as a result of reduced garbage volumes, by implementing “going green” strategies in everyday operations. This will not only save fees, it will also generate good-will with visitors, patrons and staff.
motion triggered light sensors, going paperless, encouraging staff to drink filtered versus bottled water, introducing energy (star) efficient appliances in office buildings ... to incorporating low flow/flush water use bathroom fixtures, all contribute to significant cost and carbon savings. Corporate giving to eco-friendly causes and charities is another form of going green. There are many companies in Antigua & Barbuda that provide “green” options for the consumer, such as architectural firms, building contractors and home appliance stores. By demanding green options as a consumer, you will expand the range of items and services on offer.

C
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
aribbean Culinary Tours specializes in culinary vacations set in luxurious island villas on the Caribbean islands of Antigua, Barbados, Dominica, St. Lucia and Jamaica, where guests can enjoy a weeklong or weekend culinary adventure. Each Island has its own unique culinary individuality, and Freda and her assistants immerse guests into the culture of each island with hands-on cooking demonstrations, market visits, rum distillery tours, Island excursions, spa visits, scrumptious dining, beach picnics, and shopping.
58
Freda Gore was born into a family of farmers and bakers on the Nature Isle of Dominica. Her family later relocated to her father’s native island of Antigua where she attended high school. They relied on the family baking tradition and opened ‘Henry’s Bakery’ in the town of Gray’s Farm. After graduating high school Freda pursued a cooking and baking career and attended the chef program at the Antigua & Barbuda Hospitality Training Institute. At the end of that program she was recruited by the school as a cooking and pastry instructor, a position she held for 15 years. Relocating to South Florida in the late 90’s, Chef Freda worked at a number of restaurants as a head chef. She missed the joy of working with her native Caribbean foods, however, and launched her own catering and personal chef service specialising in ‘Floribbean’ dishes. During her time in Florida, while taking yearly trips to the islands, the idea for a culinary tour was born. “As I visited the local farmers market on the different islands I thought to myself, this is a part of our culture, this is what makes us who we are, and visitors to the
islands need to be given the opportunity to learn our culinary culture.” With that thought Caribbean Culinary Tours and Vacations was born. Freda Gore’s Antigua Culinary Vacation explores the island’s great repertoire of authentic Caribbean and indigenous Antiguan dishes with Spanish, French, English, Middle Eastern and African culinary influences. You will enjoy dishes such as the traditional one pot pepperpot, curried conch, seasoned rice, red snapper baked in banana leaves, grilled lobster and the famous Antigua Black Pineapple pie. Antigua is also famous for its world-renowned English Harbour 5 year old rum, which received The Double Gold award at the 2005 World Spirits Competition held in San Francisco, ranking it as one of the best tasting rums in the world. Make sure you taste this marvelous rum. You will also enjoy the pleasure of a day trip to Barbuda, an exclusive island few in the world ever get to visit, with exotic pink sand beaches and famous for its succulent freshly caught spiny lobster.

he world of international yachting is different things to different people, but for the professional crews, one of its features is that it is a relatively small, cohesive world. Captains, crews and owners meet and recognize each other from Sydney, Australia to Newport, Rhode Island, from Cannes to Rio. The Mediterranean is at the centre of the bustle and glamour that are so much a part of this world in the summer months. The Med and the US east coast are the main destinations for sailing super yachts, mega motor yachts, and smaller ones too, with ports such as Palma de Mallorca, Antibes and Monaco offering the glittering sophistication of old, established resorts. In the winter months, however, it is the little island of Antigua that has succeeded in building a reputation as the place to be, the centre of international yachting in the Caribbean. Antigua may offer less of the glamour of the American or Mediterranean ports, but from tentative beginnings in the 1960s to the present, it has developed a world class charter yacht show, and regattas and challenges that have become an irresistible draw for the yachting community. Yachts arrive here from all over the world. The Antigua winter season begins with the Charter Yacht Show in December. This event was started by the Nicholson family, and will be celebrating its 50th year in 2011. A total of 121 boats have been registered for this show; 61 motor yachts and 60 sailing yachts. The largest registered motor yacht is 266 feet long, and the smallest is 50 feet. Sailing yachts range from 185 feet to 50 feet. Moorings are available at the contiguous Nelson’s Dockyard, Falmouth Harbour and Antigua Yacht Club marinas, and the visual impact of this vast array of yachts gathered in one place, especially when lit up at night, is breathtaking. The value of the floating stock runs to many, many millions of dollars. Brokers booked for the 2011 charter show will come from Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Monaco, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Turkey, United Kingdom and the USA, as well as from Antigua and other Caribbean islands. The
show is a spectacular start to the winter season. Sailing races and regattas in Antigua are scheduled from December through early May. The Superyacht Challenge was introduced in 2011, and will be held for the second time in January 2012. This Challenge is a series of pursuit races held over a three day period, starting and ending in Antigua. The event has already established itself on the list of important international sailing events.
The Antigua winter season wraps up with Antigua Sailing Week, starting annually on the last Sunday in April and ending in early May. Sailing Week had its start in the 1960s as an informal race organized between Classic sailboats anchored at English Harbour. The earliest races were set between Guadeloupe and English Harbour. By 1967 the event had evolved into Antigua Sailing Week and it is now a popular international regatta, attracting boats from as far away as Australia. Sailing Week is an extremely well organized and very social event, with five full days of racing. The awards ceremony is held on the evening of the final racing day, and it is also the last major social event of the winter yachting season in Antigua.

The most prestigious of the Antigua regattas is the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta, which takes place in mid-April. Established in 1988, this regatta is now the first of 10 prestigious Classic regattas sponsored by Panerai, of which the last is the Cannes Regates Royales in September. The most beautiful yachts in the world, including some of the J-boat class, compete in the Antigua Classic.

The second major event on the Antigua winter calendar is the Royal Ocean Racing Club (RORC)Caribbean 600, the only offshore race in the Caribbean series. Introduced in 2009, the 600 nautical mile race starts from Fort Charlotte, English Harbour, heads north to St. Martin and then south to Guadeloupe by way of Barbuda, Nevis, St. Kitts, Saba and St. Barths. It is a highly competitive endurance race that has already proved itself and attracts many of the ‘hottest’ boats in the world.

The intense focus on boats and boating in Antigua has encouraged a thriving industry of support and supply services. There are five important marinas offering varying levels of service; Antigua Yacht Club, Falmouth Harbour, Nelson’s Dockyard, Catamaran and Jolly Harbour marinas. Service providers at these marinas and other independent operators provide yacht shipping and delivery services, chandleries, fuel and provisioning, diesel engineers, sail makers and riggers, awning and soft furnishing makers, electronic suppliers and services, painters and varnishers, air conditioning maintenance, metal welders and fabricators, customs brokers, and yacht storage yards. Services and goods provided in Antigua are equal in quality to those found at larger, older ports of call. Businesses that benefit indirectly from yachting tourism include restaurants, taxi and car rental companies, banks, groceries, wine and liquor merchants, laundries, gift shops, T-shirt and cap printers, hotels and private villa rentals, and many more. The positive impact on the local economy is far reaching.

Several yacht clubs and associations support the growing yachting industry. The Antigua Yacht Club is the leading yacht club on the island, and is also home to the newly established National Sailing Academy. It is the headquarters for Antigua & Barbuda Search and Rescue Service (ABSAR). Jolly Harbour Yacht Club can berth 9 super yachts up to 200 feet long, in addition to its regular berths. JHYC runs a popular Dinghy Sailing Program, which includes a Youth Sailing Program offering free dinghy sailing instruction every Saturday morning for Antiguan-born children aged 8 to 18. In the afternoons the JHYC organises an “all comers” competitive sailing event for local and visiting yachts. The weekly event attempts to promote a more relaxed and social form of competitive sailing. Jolly Harbour is also a resort development for boating enthusiasts, with affordable dockside properties and a full service marina. general development of the yachting product. The Antigua Sailing Association, which reports to the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) is the national authority for sailing in Antigua and Barbuda waters. In looking to the future Antigua and the yachting community have made a significant commitment to the education of children in the sport of yachting, thereby opening the door to the many opportunities for work in the yachting industry. The National Sailing Academy, founded by visionaries from the yachting world in 2010, is funded by a voluntary assessment of one US dollar per foot of length per visiting yacht each year, in addition to significant charitable contributions received mainly from visiting yachts. The government of Antigua supports this initiative, and has declared swimming and sailing national sports.

Free swimming lessons are provided by Swalings Swim Club in Jolly Harbour. Children are brought by school buses to the Antigua Yacht Club every weekday afternoon for free sailing lessons conducted by the Academy. Twelve new Optimist dinghies were purchased in 2010, and a small fleet of Pico dinghies, the next step up from the Optimist, recently arrived in Antigua. In April 2010 Woodstock Boatbuilders launched a 39 ft. Carriacou sloop, Summer Cloud, for use by students who graduate from dinghies to keel boats, and in May 2011 Richard Matthews, founder of Oyster Marine, donated a Cork Keelboat to the Academy. Plans are in place for an expansion of the teaching program to Parham and to Jolly Harbour, where the government of Antigua and Jolly Harbour Marina offer good facilities for the program. There is a feeling of great momentum in this initiative, and the heritage of yachting in Antigua and its future success appear to be secure.

The National Sailing Academy headed by Commodore Elizabeth Jordan, and Senior Instructor Karl James and his team, was created in 2010. The program’s aim is to ensure every school age child is afforded the chance to learn how to swim and sail free of charge. This program runs through the school term and is funded by donations from private boat owners, who donate US$1 per foot per hull each year. The program currently funds swimming lessons at Swalings Swim Club for 400 children per week. There are 150 children currently taking sailing lessons each

week at the AYC and the plan is to double this number when additional facilities come on stream. The AYC have also implemented a great summer program that allows kids between the ages of 8-18yrs to learn to sail. This particular program runs in two-week cycles throughout the summer, usually for a half-day each morning. If you can swim, you can join. The course is run by a team of Royal Yachting Association (RYA) accredited instructors and exceeds RYA regulations; there is 1 instructor for every four students. The fees for the course are very reasonable. This is possible because the AYC subsidises the program through their membership fees.

A personal message from Karl. “Sailing is a great leveller – you do not need to be a great academic, it sees no colour and has no discrimination. Here in Antigua & Barbuda we are blessed to have favourable sailing conditions and a wealth of local and foreign sailing expertise at our fingertips. The sailing industry is an industry that can give direct employment to anybody interested at any level. Very few sports can boast the same, especially here. I feel an obligation to give the A&B community every opportunity that it has afforded me. My lifestyle has been fantastic. I have sailed the world and met and worked with some very special people. Anyone who is interested in the water can make a good life in the industry, and personal fulfilment is an everyday experience.”

Karl James was born and grew up in English Harbour. He started sailing at a very young age by holding his t-shirt in the air and floating on logs. He moved on to sunfish, and his love affair with the sea and the wind was launched. Whilst working at St James club Carl met Dennis Conner, the Americas Cup Winner, who sent Karl a Laser sail boat in 1993. By 1996 Karl was competing in the Olympics in Atlanta, USA. Karl continued sailing in regional competitions and building his hours on the big boats. In 2000 he competed in the Olympics in Australia, and in 2001 he won his first medal for Antigua & Barbuda, a 2nd Silver, in the Sunfish World Championships. With 28 countries competing and over 90 sailors this was an impressive achievement. Following this little burst of fame, Karl held the Caribbean Laser Champ title for 5 years running, from 2001-2005. He has won 9 national championships in a row. Karl has been a crewmember on boats that have won every major event in the Caribbean. Karl was a crewmember on winning boat Sojana Farr 115, in Antigua Sailing Week 2011, and he recently sailed in the 6 metre championship in Helsinki, where his boat Nada placed 7th, their best win to date.

he Caribbean islands are, at the present time, almost completely dependent on oil. Renewable energy plays little or no role in our regional energy supply, despite the fact that our conditions are more than ideal. However, slowly but surely the switch to renewable energy is gathering momentum, part of a global awakening to the sources at our disposal. Against this backdrop it is time for Antigua to take on the opportunity and the challenge of developing and expanding our renewables programme.
74
Elliott Lincoln, owner and founder of Themba Biofuels
Some environmentally conscious companies in Antigua are beginning to take those first steps. Themba Biofuels, a new privately owned and operated company, has started production of biodiesel fuel from recycled waste vegetable oil. Themba Biofuels is the brainchild of Elliott Lincoln, a highly educated mechanical engineering specialist trained in the UK and Germany. Elliott is of Antiguan parentage and grew up with his family in England. His ‘roots’ are in Antigua, and he has never stayed away for long. Seventeen years experience in industry, regular holidays in Antigua and the aspiration to do something positive led Elliott to return home and start his biodiesel business. Elliott explained that the process of converting waste vegetable oil into reusable fuel oil just made sense.“The process was something that I saw being done in the UK and I thought, with the island’s large hospitality industry – this has to be something that could work here.” Capitalising on his expertise and insight into the industry, Elliott began to research the potential for his idea. First, he found that his business
Themba Biofuels processing plant in Paynters, Antigua
Elliott was quick to recognize his opportunity, and now collects the containers of waste oil from Cooks and takes them to his processing plant where the oil is converted to biodiesel. “We have to address what we are going to do with the waste that we have piling up on our islands”, he explains. In seeking other sources of supply, he
approached the hospitality and restaurant sector, which now benefits from his waste oil collection service. His arrangement with hoteliers and restaurateurs alleviates some health and safety issues and leads to a healthier environment for us all. Once the waste oil arrives on site it is filtered to remove solid particles and then passed through several stages in the conversion process where the oil is chemically converted to biodiesel. The final stage is called “polishing”, which removes the last impurities. The biodiesel is then stored in a “finished fuel” tank, from which biodiesel can be dispensed for distribution. Currently, Antigua & Barbuda imports approximately 13million gallons of diesel fuel a year. “It can’t be a bad thing if we can reduce this amount even by a small percentage by utilizing the waste products we already accumulate on the island” says Elliott. The company is in the first stages of production and they
www.CaribbeanHotProperty.com
could contribute significantly to waste management on the island. Antigua’s landfill at Cooks was a case in point. The landfill site was prone to underground fires caused by the build up of methane gases released during the decomposition of waste. Burying waste oil exacerbated the problem and so management of the landfill site sought alternative ways to store the oil above ground. However, above ground storage of flammable material is not a satisfactory solution to the problem, and another more permanent solution was sought.
75
are still operating on a “learning curve”. They face challenges and resistance to recycling,, but going greener is without a doubt the way of the future in the Caribbean, and the sooner this happens the better off we will be.

The Caribbean Renewable Energy Development Programme (CREDP), has been in operation since 2004, with a primary objective ‘to reduce barriers to the increased use of renewable energy, thus reducing the dependence on fossil fuels while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions’. Thirteen Caribbean nations are already part of the project, while the participation of Antigua & Barbuda is pending. Barbados, Bahamas, Trinidad and Jamaica, amongst others, have all invested in biodiesel plants. In Jamaica, the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), are about to embark on a pilot project to produce biofuel from castor oil production.
76
Elliott Lincoln insists that “the benefits of this process are endless… First, it produces an environmentally friendly fuel that burns up to 75% cleaner than conventional diesel and is completely biodegradable. The second point is that biodiesel has a higher ‘flash point’, which means it is safer to handle and store as it can be heated to 266ºF before it ignites. “Potential applications for biodiesel fuel include diesel engines, marine diesel motors and diesel generators. Growing, producing and using renewable fuels can help Antigua & Barbuda become less dependent on imported oil. Not only would the increased use of renewable energy reduce carbon emissions and make us less susceptible to fossil fuel price volatility, it may also help economic development through employment opportunities and training, and create a competitive edge to help diversify our economy.
Spurring Elliott on with his project is his supportive wife, Fidela, and the other forward thinking individuals that surround him. Elliott sees his project as a long-term business. “We have a lot of very talented local people who have a great work ethic and produce excellent work. If we can start to use the resources around us to reduce costs we are going to do some really great things. Local solutions and a little know-how can help us address some really big challenges.” The technology required to develop these new industries already exists; and building local expertise, knowledge and confidence has got to be the way forward. Recently it has become apparent that Antigua & Barbuda has to nurture and build industries outside of tourism to become more sustainable and truly independent. Themba Biofuels is doing its part to reduce the country’s reliance on imported fossil fuels. Elliott is proving that building on the usage of biodiesel fuel made locally from a waste product that would otherwise become hazardous waste is a viable alternative that will reduce our dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Ruth Spencer
National Focal Person-Global Environmental Facility/United Nations Development Programme & Owner of ‘Ruth’s Place’
Ruth Spencer is a Yale University trained Development Economist with an ambassadorial nature that extends far beyond the provision of accommodation that she offers to visitors at her apartments in Hodges Bay. ‘Ruth’s Place’ seeks to provide the best personalised service to students and tourists in a place where many cultures unite, and sharing and bonding has an intangible value that’s unforgettable. Her rustic apartments on Antigua’s northeast coast have fantastic ocean views and are within a couple of minutes walk from Jabberwock Beach, the home of Antiguan kite surfing, the American University of Antigua (AUA) medical school and scenic areas. Ruth goes that extra mile to ensure that her guests are happy and have a memorable stay – no matter how long they spend in Antigua & Barbuda.
In between all her busy work and voluntary commitments Ruth still finds time to relax and enjoy the company of her guests and student tenants by helping with supermarket runs, organizing trips to cultural events and arranging international Sunday luncheons that bring everyone together. Ruth explains, “The foreign students who study here in Antigua & Barbuda are future ambassadors of our islands. The experience they have here whilst studying will remain with them always and have an economic impact both now and in the future. It is my role to do what I can to help make their experience positive.” She is steadfast in her belief that enhancing more of a cultural mix and engaging with people from all walks of life will only help to benefit the way we can tackle our own local concerns, strengthening our “Antiguan & Barbudan Experience” for the better.

Ruth Spencer is a visionary force behind many local programmes. She is on the Executive PTA Board of the Princess Margaret Secondary School, the largest school in Antigua, and Dr. J. S. Nagra, MD – Dean of AUA, nominated her as the local spokesperson on the AUA Research Council, a new group hoping to provide funding for students engaged in research. Ruth has also been appointed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to facilitate the Global Environmental Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF) in Antigua & Barbuda. The GEF is the largest global public funder for environmental projects, and funds from the Small Grants Programme enable community groups to find solutions and tackle environmental problems at a grass roots
level. Ruth explained that, “I have a passion to change the lives of local people for the better and I think it was this mindset that secured me the position ‘National Focal Person’ for the Global Environmental Facility’s Small Grants Programme.” In Antigua, the following groups have so far benefited from the grants programme, the Antigua Beekeepers Cooperative, Antigua Fish Farming project, Why Me?, Antigua & Barbuda Cancer Society’s organic gardening project, The Humane Society, The Rotary Club which implemented the Waste Recycling Facility at Carlisle, and the Bendals Community Group’s organic gardening and recycling project. Groups with a proven track record can apply for funding and are able to administer funds up to US$50,000.00.
