The Barbados Road Deaths Report 2011


In summary In 2011 a total of 19 people were killed on the roads of Barbados. The number of people who were slightly or seriously injured are unknown to the author. Of the 19 people killed, 13 were male and 6 were female. The age groups of those who died varied, but 5 (26%) were between the ages of 17 - 25 years old. The largest number of deaths 10 (53%) occured in Saint Michael, followed by Saint Philip with 4 (21%).

Road deaths mostly occurred during hours of darkness with 13 (68%) deaths during the period from 7pm to 7am. Most deaths 12 (63%) took place between Thursdays and Sundays. There were no deaths during the holiday period of Christmas but 5 (26%) occurred in the summer months of July and August. The month of May saw the highest number of road deaths 4 (21%). Most of these deaths 12 (63%) took place off the main highway network away from the ABC Highway, Highway 1, Highway 2, Highway 3, Highway 4, Highway 5 Highway 6 and Highway 7. Pedestrians, motorcyclists and car drivers accounted for 15 (75%) of the road deaths. These were equally split with 5 deaths in each category. There were no recorded fatalities in the parishes of Saint Peter, Saint James, Saint Andrew or Saint Joseph.
