Killam Campus of Caring
Grand Opening Celebration
Killam Long Term Care Resident Council Co-Chairs Violet McNabb and George Gascoyne cut the ribbon on the Killam Campus of Caring Phase one grand opening. While the actual moving-in day won’t take place until early October, over 100 people came out to celebrate the completion of the long-awaited expansion.
Grand opening of Killam Campus of Caring a long-awaited event Leslie Cholowsky Editor
An announcement about grant funding for an expansion at the Killam Long Term care was made nearly 10 years ago. In 2016, the Province of Alberta and Covenant Health reiterated a promise for the expansion, and on Thursday, Sept. 19, over 100 people attended the grand opening of the Killam Campus of Caring phase one. The first speaker of the afternoon was Sheli Murphy, Senior Operating OfficerRural Health Services, for Covenant Health. “I cannot tell you how incredibly exciting this is: to see all of you here brings such gladness to my heart and to the staff of leadership team here at Killam Health Care Centre. “It is so important that seniors can stay connected to their communities when they go into care, and we know
that in rural communities there are often few opportunities than we would have in the cities, but it is so important. “We are grateful to the staff and residents and their families, who actually consulted with us on every aspect of this building. “And this building isn’t just a facility, it is their home, and so to have their input was absolutely truly wonderful. “From the private residents’ suites, to fully accessible bathrooms, and everybody has their own bathroom, and the courtyards, each element in this home was designed with our resident’s holistic needs in mind. “Seniors are treasures in our community, and we are so blessed to keep this wisdom and this sage in our community. “We know our residents and their families are excited to move in and I am thrilled to see many here with us today, and thank you for the many hands and See GRAND OPENING P14/15

Meteorite predicted to have landed near Camrose Emily Tanton Student Reporter
The landing zone of the Aug. 31 meteorite that could be seen across central Alberta has been narrowed down to a strip of land between Camrose and the Battle River. Students at the Augustana Campus in Camrose have been tirelessly searching for the meteorite to no avail. Using triangulation of all of the sightings, however, scientists are certain of the meteor’s approximate landing site. The late harvest due to a wet summer has also delayed search efforts as unharvested land can obviously not be torn apart. If you are interested in going on a search for the incredible rock, there are a few things to remember. Meteorites on private land belong to the landowner, but any meteorites found on public
land, such as along roads, belong to the finder. The University of Alberta also released four tips to properly identify a meteorite compared to other types of rock. “Check if the specimen feels unusually heavy for its size. Many meteorites (typically iron meteorites) are quite dense and feel heavier than most Earth rocks. “Test the specimen’s magnetism using a fridge magnet. Nearly all meteorites contain iron-nickel
metal and attract magnets easily. “Check for holes or bubbles in the specimen. A true meteorite will not have any holes or bubbles at all. If your specimen does it’s likely some other stony matter. “Examine the outer-layer of the specimen for a thin, black, eggshell-like crust. When a meteor falls through Earth’s atmosphere, the outer surface of the rock melts, forming what’s known as a fusion crust.”

Pre-season hockey a fun excuse to get away for the weekend Ally Anderson Killam News
Howdy my fellow Killamites. I hope you had an enjoyable weekend. Eric and I made a few trips to the city over the weekend for different events we had tickets for. Funny how even when
you buy tickets months in advance, sometimes they all fall on the same week. It was a chance to re-familiarize myself with the LRT system, anyway. We were lucky enough to attend the Oilers preseason game against the Flames. That was such a

fun game! We arrived before the first period ended, when the Flames were up 2 to 1. But the Oilers made quick work of that, and also helped wipe the smirk off Eric’s face. Sorry sweety, you were
cheering for the wrong team that evening. Even though the Oilers played a stacked lineup and the Flames held back their seasoned vets for the rookies to try their hand at NHL hockey. We all know how the
regular season will most likely play out, so you will get your chance to say the same to me... many times in the future season, I’m sure. The game ended on a 62 win. There were a surprising amount of brave
Flames fans attending that game in their jerseys. I was shocked as the Battle of Alberta can get rather heated at either arena. Maybe not so much in September, though. See KILLAM P10

LETTER Organ and tissue donation
Looking for ideas to boost our “Shop at home” potential While doing research for an article, I came across a social media page promoting a Cash Mob event; immediately, my interest was piqued and I dug deeper. Like its namesake, flash mob, cash mobs are organized group events, but instead of singing and dancing, participants get to capitalize on special sales and offers from local stores, open just for them; while those stores have a guarantee that these participants have committed to spending a minimum of $20 each. Nearby Camrose businesses hold a cash mob event at the beginning of every month in hopes of promoting local businesses. The idea was formed back in November of 2015 and has proven to be a great opportunity for residents of the community to explore stores that they may not have otherwise been exposed to. Attracting 20-50 shoppers every month, (spending $400 to $1,000 in a few hours) their cash mob is a well-known and frequented event that garners a significant income for businesses, even with special event pricing. The Flagstaff region has such a variety of stores that many residents may not have encountered before; a cash mob here would not only promote those local businesses, but residents could also have fun socializing with fellow shoppers and capitalizing on deals. Cash mobs encourage local residents to shop locally and boost the economies of the communities they are most active in; Flagstaff could undoubtedly benefit from that. The Chamber of Commerce recommends that communities thinking of kickstarting their own cash mob should recognize it as an economic opportunity and advertise it as such. Cash mob organizers tell shoppers to meet at a central point, where a lead car will be waiting to lead the crew to an unknown location, this adds intrigue to the event as shoppers never know where they will be taken to shop. If Flagstaff were to implement such an exciting event, shoppers could be told to meet in the town of the business they’ll be shopping in, but not be told which store ahead of time. As a local resident and ardent supporter of shopping locally, I think it would be cool if something like this was offered in Flagstaff; maybe in time to do some Christmas shopping? EMILY TANTON
Dear Editor; Recently some of our team attended a conference and a presentation on the subject of organ and tissue donation. Ed, the presenter, spoke fondly of his 17-year-old son Bryn, a Taekwondo Black Belt, a talented musician, an honours student, and car enthusiast. Bryn and his logical brain could fix just about anything. Ed went on to tell the audience about the night, about two years ago, when he and his wife were awakened by the doorbell around midnight. Everyone in the house had gone to bed early that evening except Bryn, who was in the garage working on his car. Bryn had apparently decided to go for a test drive before he called it a night. At the door ringing the doorbell were two RCMP officers, there to tell Bryn’s parents that Bryn’s car had struck a horse that had wandered onto the road. It had taken over two hours for emergency crews to extract him from his car, and he was on his way to hospital. Bryn’s family soon learned the devastating news that Bryn was brain dead and would not recover. Over the next few days they arranged for family and for Bryn’s many friends to attend to say their goodbyes. They also discussed with hospital staff the possibility of organ and tissue donation, as Bryn had earlier expressed to his family his desire to be a donor. Although Bryn’s organs were not suitable for donation, his tissue was. The family later learned one of Bryn’s heart valves was used to save the life of a days-old infant, and skin cells were used to treat a young burn victim. And there may be more; tissue can be frozen for later use.

Imagine the anguish this family felt going through this ordeal, and imagine the courage this man had to stand before those in attendance to tell the heartbreaking story of his son Bryn. The entire room was quiet; not a sound to be heard except for the soft crying of many in attendance. Ed, however, was sharing Bryn’s story for a reason. While Bryn’s death is a tragedy, his desire to be a donor meant something positive has come from that tragedy. I’m sure we all recognize that this could happen to any of us, but have we all registered to be an organ donor? Ed also shared with the audience some information about organ donors and the system in Alberta. In some jurisdictions everyone is put on a registry, and individuals have the ability to ‘opt out’, but in Alberta one must ‘opt in’ to be put on the registry; this has resulted in a very low percentage of Alberta citizens that are currently registered. Additionally, in a recent year more than 200 people died while awaiting an organ donation. As well, it is actually more likely that any given individual would be in a position to require an organ or tissue transplant, rather than be a donor. It’s easy to get on the registry; you simply need to attend an Alberta Registries Office (visit us at our office in Killam, or go to any AB Registries location) and ask to sign up. We encourage you to do so now - let Bryn’s story be the reason you make the effort to register. Bud James S. James Agencies Ltd. The James Insurance Group

Daysland Meals in the fields near Heisler holding third annual Scarecrow Festival Maxine Badry Heisler
P.
The Daysland Business Association has just announced that they will be holding their third annual Scarecrow Festival coming up in October for residents and businesses. Based on previous entries, it will be great to see what people come up with. Maybe our Straw Reporter Dottie Dolittle can find a spot in Daysland to nestle in and spot the entries. The Association is also planning a halloween event again this year. The Daysland Public Library Bake sale this past weekend was a huge success, with six massive tables of mouthwatering bakeware set up for sale. Books and baking, what could be better! Sounds like they had a great turnout, with many paying much more than the cost of their purchases with additional cash donations. Congratulations to Wendy Weiss, who won the Baking Basket. The event was a fundraiser for the library, and wouldn’t have been possible without some amazing volunteer bakers and workers. There are some great new titles at the library this month, make sure to check them out, not just for adults, but children’s books and DVDs too. Providence Place held a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the new gazebo park with a short program last week, with live music. It looked like a great celebration for the residents! The Daysland Sunbeam Drop In Centre is renewing memberships.
Anyone 50-years-old or older is welcome to join. The facility is open Monday through Saturday with floor curling and cards every day, and Canasta on Wednesday. Palace Theatre has started up their fall lineup with some real blockbusters, ending the month with Yesterday! Imagine if nobody remembered the Beatles but you...! The Battle River Community Foundation will be honouring Bob Hanrahan during a Community Builder’s dinner in late October, more details to follow. Compiled by CP Staff

Good morning everyone, how was your week? It was a bit iffy here and there; we just got two good days for the farmers to get a good start combining, then along comes another change. It's been a very unpredictable summer. Just think, we have had three beautiful summer days and now
fall is here. I hope we have a better year in 2020. Wow, to imagine that 19 years have gone by since “the end of the world” in the year 2000. How time flies. It's hard to believe. Good luck to all the farmers; have a safe and bountiful harvest and keep praying for good weather. Family and friends enjoyed Meals in the Fields last Thursday at the home of Shawn and Janice Badry. I'm sure everyone who listens to CFCW has heard about it.
I had the pleasure of attending and had an awesome time with a delicious Ukrainian meal and great entertainment. I didn't have to eat supper that night, as the meal was very filling. We all got a very nice pair of work gloves and caps; names were also drawn for a CD of the entertainer. Shawn and Janice were presented with many lovely gifts from the sponsors for
hosting the meal. Melissa Heisler of North Carolina, USA, was home for a few days visiting with Mickey and Moyra; David, Jen, and family of Cold Lake were also home. While home Melissa celebrated her birthday before returning to North Carolina, where she is employed, on Monday evening. Bowling will be starting soon, so look for the See HEISLER P10

Last Wednesday Hughenden Public School (HPS) was privileged to have honored guest Dr. Russell Schnell, a Nobel Prize winner, give a presentation. Dr. Schnell is the deputy director of the Global Monitoring Division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Getting to experience authentic lessons through the lens of an environmental scientist presented an opportunity for rich learning. This presentation was attended by a video conference chemistry class made up of students from Innisfree, Dewberry, and Hughenden; as well as Grade 10 and Grade 12 HPS students. Dr. Schnell delivered an incredibly interesting presentation on climate-change with an intriguing title: “The Air We Breathe: Ain’t What It Used To Be.” Students demonstrated high engagement with the content of the presentation. It was great to learn that Dr. Schnell himself is from rural Alberta, as he is from Castor.
Appreciation is extended to local resident, Kathie Brown, for letting us know that Dr. Schnell was in the area. Submitted

Robynn Bartusek from Sedgewick and her business partners and friends from all over Flagstaff County: Rachel Resch, Kaitlin Dion, Stephanie Armstrong, and Danielle Armstrong attended the annual Arbonne conference in Toronto last week. Arbonne is a Swiss based health and wellness company who focuses on pure, safe, and beneficial personal products as well as making an impact by giving back to others. Definite highlights of the conference were Danielle Armstrong walking on stage for her achievements this year and Robynn Bartusek placing within the top 10 in Canada in her category, also getting to walk on stage. These women not only work on becoming the best versions of themselves, but also have a deep passion to help others. They will be hosting an event this Thursday for their big supporters and raising money for our local FIRST organization. Congratulations to the whole team for their accomplishments and their clients for the ongoing support. It reminds me of this great quote: "When you buy from a small business, you are not helping a CEO buy a third vacation home. You are helping a little girl get dance lessons, a little boy get his team jersey, a mom or dad put food on the table, a family pay a mortgage, or a student pay for college." That certainly rings true to all businesses in Flagstaff County who keep our

Thank You The Village of Forestburg Council, staff and the 100th Anniversary Committee have been overwhelmed by the many contributions made by our volunteers and citizens to make our 100th Anniversary such an outstanding event. The volunteer hours and willingness of our citizens to go over and above to ensure that the Village is so beautifully represented during our celebration cannot be counted. But beyond the celebration, it is the volunteers and citizens who have worked so hard over the last 100 years to ensure that Forestburg is a wonderful, caring community to live and work in that have contributed to the success of our Village. We look forward to the next 100 years!

Killam Continued from Page 3 On our way to and from the city, we saw a lot of farmers take advantage of the decent weather over the weekend. Hopefully the rain holds off a little longer! Although the horrible swear-word for that white stuff has been mentioned on the news many times. If we do get flurries, I doubt they’ll stay. it’s on October 6, so mark your calendars so you don’t miss it! FFCS/F.I.R.S.T. has a couple of important events coming up in October. One is a session on how you can help support our older adults who may be experiencing neglect or abuse. It is something that I think we all can listen to and learn from, as most of us have an older adult that is prevalent in our lives. The other event is a mental health first aid for seniors information session, which also another that we can all sit down and learn from and to be
wary about with any of the seniors in our lives. You can check out the ads for the locations, dates, times, and other information in the paper this week! If you see any of these lovely people this week be sure to wish them a happy birthday: Grace Bruketa, Sept. 28; Mabel Thompson and Terry Link, Sept. 30; Tristan Skaar, Oct. 1. Happy anniversary to those celebrating this week: Bud and Tammy James, Sept. 25; Justin and Shelbee Krakowka, Sept. 30. That’s all for me for this week, folks!
Margaret Daleug, Melissa Heisler, Sept. 24; Doreen Pushak, Megan Crosby, Sept. 27; Troy Weinkauf, Sept. 28; Alan Sommer, Ken Vornbrock, Lorne Schulte, Sept. 29; Debby Bendfeld, Sept. 30. Anniversary greetings
to: Brett and Megan McInnis, Mike and Cathy Stewart, Sept. 29; Dennis and Debbie Steil, Derald and Mariann Wolbeck, Sept. 30. Thought for the week: you will never attempt anything if you must first overcome all objections.
If you're interested in bowling for the upcoming season and would like to register a team or join a team as an individual, there's four leagues to choose from: ladies, seniors, and evening mixed bowling, as well as a youth group, all right
here in Sedgewick. Check out their ad in the paper. The season starts after Thanksgiving weekend and goes for about 22 weeks. Wind-up is usually around Easter. New members and teams are always welcome.

Federal NDP candidate announced for Battle River-Crowfoot Patricia Harcourt Staff Reporter
Another candidate has been added to the list of people running in the Battle RiverCrowfoot riding in the federal election. This list is of candidates is set out as of Monday, Sept. 23, and could change in future. Natasha Fryzuk will be the New Democratic Party (NDP) candidate. She is communications coordinator for the Quarters Arts Society in Edmonton. Fryzuk joins Conservative Party of Canada candidate Damien Kurek, Green Party candidate Geordie Nelson and People's Party of Canada candidate David Michaud in vying to become the MP for Battle RiverCrowfoot in the Oct. 21 federal election.
So far, the Conservative and People's Party are the only two parties with a full slate of candidates in Alberta, 34 out of 34 ridings. Both the Greens and NDP have 33 candidates out of 34 filled. There is not expected to be a Liberal candidate in this riding. In fact, provincially, the Liberals have only 27 candidates out of a possible 34. Other parties in Alberta that have no candidate so far in Battle River-Crowfoot are: Animal Protection, Christian Heritage, Communist, Libertarian, Marijuana, Marxist-Leninist, National Citizens Alliance, New Democratic Party, People's Party and Rhino Party. Prospective candidates can still submit their names to Elections Canada in time to get on the Oct. 21 ballot
if they do so before Oct. 2. A photo or profile of
NDP candidate Natasha Fryzuk was not available as of
press time. The Green Party has now released an official photo of its
Battle River-Crowfoot candidate Geordie Nelson of Camrose.

Grand Opening Continued from Front careful planning that went into creating this special home, including residents and their families, staff and physicians, and our colleagues from Alberta Health Services. Together you have made sure even the smallest details are the right details for our residents.” Murphy then led the group into a short prayer, a Covenant Health tradition, before introducing Battle RiverCrowfoot Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson. “It is indeed a pleasure to be here in the closing days of my responsibilities being a member of parliament, right here in Flagstaff County, and right here in Killam. “I see mayors from other parts of the county and our Reeve. This is not just a local success, this is something our entire Flagstaff County and beyond can be proud of. “We’ve already heard Sheli talk about the importance of home, but the importance of community as well, where communities can come together and work hard among themselves.” Sorenson added an official congratulations from parliament, saying, “Our largest transfer to the provinces is the health and social transfer. We expect that provinces will then look around their province and find the places that money needs to be invested. It is so good to see that different governments have put dollars into this facility, recognizing that this is a place where people need to stay and find that kind of health care.” Murphy introduced Camrose MLA Jackie Lovely next, who said, “It’s very nice to be here. I’m thrilled to see so many people here. It warms my heart that there is so much community support for this building.” She recalled a hardhat tour just months ago, and marvelled at the progress on construction since that time. “There are a couple of things that really impress me about this facility. Most importantly, to me, couples don’t need to separate depending on the level of care they require. “That is the envy; this building is the envy of so many other care facilities, not only in our constituency, but within
our province, so this is a real treasure here, and I hope that more communities look towards doing the same thing in the future. “The other thing is the staff; wow, you guys have a great team of people here.” Lovely also brought official greetings and congratulations from Premier Jason Kenney, and regrets from Alberta Health Minister Tyler Shandro, neither of who were able to attend but who said in a statement: “Our government is working to meet the challenging and growing needs of Albertans which includes ensuring old Albertans have safe and comfortable accommodation. “That means supporting and encouraging new facilities like the one we are celebrating here today in Killam.” “I want to thank Covenant Health for your 150-year legacy of providing compassionate care in Alberta, and for your leadership on this important community facility. “Congratulations and welcome home.” Next to speak was Patrick Dumelie, CEO of Covenant Health, who has become a familiar face to the community. “It seems like a long-awaited journey to reach this podium today, so it’s something I’m really very pleased to be a part of. “On behalf of the Board of Covenant Health and our senior leadership team, I want to welcome you all; you all are very special friends and guests, and I mostly want to welcome the residents, who this is really all about.” Dumelie added, “Our vision and mission of inspired culture calls upon us to transform the health system. We want to ensure that we are providing compassionate care to our patients, residents, and their families. “Our Killam Campus of Care is really built on a bold vision of creating a campus that can meet the unique needs of our rural communities. “We know that geography and isolation can be a hugely devastating issue for our seniors, especially as they need care. “We also understand that there is a strong bond and connection that people have to their neighbours, and to the land, often spending decades in the community. They are the pioneers who have built our communities and our province.
“We recognize also it’s important to create an environment of living where these pioneers and leaders can grow old safely with all the comforts, and respect, and compassion, companionship, and recognition. “This is really for us just taking the first step in realizing the vision for Killam with this beautiful centre to meet people’s changing needs as they age. “The flexibility of this facility, which is home for those who need supporting living, long term care, or dementia care, means residents can stay in the same site and often in the same room as their healthcare needs change.” He added, “This site highlights a new model of care which calls on us to engage and involve those we serve. This is essential for us to provide excellence in care, but we recognize that residents’ families, and point-of-care staff, leaders, physicians, and volunteer care staff alike all play an important role in creating a high-quality care experience. This approach enhances the dignity and quality of life for our residents, their families, and the community as a whole.” Dumelie said the Campus of Care model is about providing a more responsive level of care to meet individual needs, to serve people where they are in their care journey. “I can’t tell you enough about how excited I am; this has been a long journey, with many, many committed people.” Town of Killam Mayor Ben Kellert added his congratulations: “It was a long time in coming, but I know that the facility will be greatly appreciated by our precious residents, their families, the dedicated staff, and generous army of volunteers.” Kellert praised all members of the team involved with the expansion and he added that he looked forward to moving-in day, and seeing smiles on the faces of all the residents. Kellert said in closing: “Someone said this, and I like this little quote: Things would be a lot nicer if antique people were valued as highly as antique furniture. “Thanks to the commitment and gen-

erosity of so many, things just got nicer. We have proven that the antique people of Killam and area are priceless. “Thanks to all who have been involved in providing this facility in our community.” Site administrator Geri Clark was introduced next by Murphy, who said, “She has been our biggest advocate next to Sharleen and the Board.” Clark says, “It is truly a privilege to have been part of the planning for the Killam Campus of Care along with our partners at Alberta Health Services, our residents, families, and our dedicated staff. “I know you have all waited a long time for this moment; I want to thank you for being patient and sticking with us. “We had the opportunity to consult with our residents to make sure their wishes were incorporated in the building and to make sure it feels like a true home to them.” She’s very excited that the Killam Health Care Centre now offers supportive living, long term care, and memory care. “It means that we can adapt the care to meet residents’ individual needs and that they won’t have to move away as their care needs change.” She said it’s not uncommon for seniors in rural Alberta to have to move from their home towns when they require care. “Being able to offer these different living options right here is a big deal. “Seniors are an invaluable part of our family; keeping them in our community is critical to keeping families whole.” Clark offered a special thank you to the staff of the Killam Health Centre, saying, “I’ve always been proud of the care you provide to our residents and our loved ones. “Even though our original resident area hasn’t been ideal, your compassionate care has never faltered and I see you go beyond and above for our people every day to serve them. “You deserve to work in a space that is the same quality as the care that you deliver.” Murphy introduced Sharleen Chevraux next, who is the Killam Community Board and Foundation Chair, saying, “This dedicated group has raised more than $400,000 to contribute towards this campus of care, which is just wonderful. Chevraux said, “I am so happy and so excited to be here celebrating the grand opening of our new campus of caring. “As Chairman of the Board and Community Foundation, I can tell you that many people worked long and hard for this day and have at times despaired of it ever occurring. “The Foundation has been fundraising for over 10 years while the negotiating, dreaming, and planning were occurring. Several times we were told the building was imminent, only to have the event put on hold again. See GRAND OPENING P15

Grand Opening Continued from Page 14
“I’m sure that our communities were on the verge of losing faith in the project; and us as a board, yet they stuck with us and over these many years have generously donated towards the fund needed to furnish the new building.” She talked about the new spaces in detail. “As for our current and future residents, they are moving from mostly shared spaces into spacious new single-person rooms, each with its own accessible bathroom, 40” wall-mounted TV, small fridge for snacks, and room for some of their personal belongings. “Instead of one large dining room for all residents, in this phase there will be two smaller ones, each with its own fridge, dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, and food server. Eventually when phase two is complete, there will be three dining rooms. “Residents will eat with staff in a more homey atmosphere and the staff who work with them there hope they will feel at home rather than in an institution.” Chevraux pointed out some other features of the new construction. “Not yet ready but already under construction are two indoor courtyards, which will allow residents to be outside, sheltered from winds but in fresh air and sunshine. “The courtyards will provide walking paths, benches, and tables; recreation spaces, gardens, including opportunities for residents who wish to garden, and visiting spaces for
both residents and their families. “In short, our new campus of caring will endeavour to meet residents’ medical, social, spiritual, and entertainment needs in a new and wonderful home.” The final two speakers brought the perspective from the residents to the new construction. George Gascoyne, and his daughter Gwen Simpson, each spoke briefly about the facility. Gascoyne said, “Welcome to our new home. The Killam campus of care has been designed with the flexibility to provide supportive living, long-term care, and dementia care, ensuring that our residents can continue to access high-quality care from Killam Health Centre as their individual needs change.” Gascoyne said he is part of the choir, and sang a verse of “You Are My Sunshine,” for the crowd. Simpson gave a little of her fa-
ther’s background, saying, “My dad has been in Flagstaff County all his life.” She talked about him first moving into Killam, saying, “My dad may be 97, but he is very, very independent. He still makes his own decisions; my sister and I try to catch up, but he’s too fast. “He likes to keep busy.” She talked about the day after they moved Gascoyne in. “I came the next day to check up on him, and couldn’t find him anywhere. Then I found out that he’d already signed himself up for a bus trip, and was out. “I’m very excited for my dad to move into his new home. I know it will give him privacy and space to move around, especially with a wheel chair; there’s no room where he is now. “The move to a new home won’t
just be a room to him, it will definitely be his home. Currently he tells me he has his bed here, but he lived out in the open areas, and now is looking foward to his own space. He wants people to come and visit, play games, and play music. “He’s excited.” Simpson, too, praised the Killam Health Care staff, saying, “I personally have seen them go out of their way over and above the call of duty to make the residents comfortable.” After a special ribbon cutting that included Gascoyne and his Residents Council co-chair Violet McNabb, tour of the facility were conducted, including two rooms which had been staged with furniture. Staff and Chandos Construction personnel were also on hand to answer questions about the features of the new construction.

FAITH COLUMN
Faith: Quiet confidence A sick man turned to his doctor, as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, “Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side.” Very quietly, the doctor said, “I don’t know.” “You don’t know? You, a Christian man, do not know what is on the other side?” The doctor was hold-
ing the handle of the door; on the other side of which came the sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, “Did you notice my dog? He’s never been in this room before. He didn’t know what was
inside. He knew nothing! Except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. “I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing… I know my Master is there and that is enough.” We are given some understanding in scripture in regard to what heaven is going to be
The fraudster’s tool-kit: Show and Tell We’ve all heard the adage that it’s wrong to envy your neighbours, but did you know that envy is also a tool that fraudsters use to scam you? We often think of someone’s house, cars, or toys like expensive jewelry, boats, or recreational vehicles, as the measure of their financial success. Fraudsters know this, and often parade their toys around town to help generate trust within the community or establish a reputation as someone with a lot of money. They hope that people will wonder: “How can I achieve that kind of financial success?” If a person is living a lavish lifestyle, you should still be cautious if they present you with a money-making opportunity. Don’t let anyone fool you into thinking that their opportunity is too “complex” for you to understand; ask questions until you are satisfied and have thoroughly looked into the opportunity on your own. Curt Boechler, Senior Advisor-Communications for the Alberta Securities Commission (ASC) says, “Investment fraud didn’t take the summer off. “At the Alberta Securi-
ties Commission, we see more people becoming victims of various types of fraud and we suspect it has happened in your community. “Protecting investors from fraud and educating Albertans on how they can keep their hardearned money is a key component of what we do.” Even if you have a friend or relative who invested and tries to persuade you to as well – don’t let word of mouth lead to you to being duped. When asked about how to recognize fraudsters, Cynthia Campbell, Director of Enforcement at the ASC, says, “It’s often difficult to spot a scam artist, in part because they tend to be really good at gaining trust. “People need to do their own homework and determine if something is a legitimate investment and right for them. “If it seems too good to be true, don’t hand over
your money. “Protect yourself. And if you, like many other people, have been victimized by a fraudster, report it to the ASC and help us protect others.” If you don’t know where to start in your research of a potential opportunity or what to ask, visit checkfirst.ca. There you’ll find unbiased information and tips to ask the right questions, so you don’t get taken advantage of. CheckFirst is run by the ASC, whose mission is to foster a fair and efficient capital market and to protect investors. If you’re not comfortable navigating the web, you can also call the ASC, public inquiries toll-free 1-877-355-4488. So the next time someone tells you about a great money-making opportunity, be cautious. Ask lots of questions and make sure they’re not just telling you what you want to hear. And by all means, CheckFirst.
like. The bible does give us some little hints; but it is absolutely impossible for our finite minds to truly and totally understand this infinite concept. What we do understand though is that this Jesus who promised to never leave us or forsake us and who has remained true to His word; is on the other side ready to welcome us into the place that He has been preparing for us. Ready to usher us into our brand new

Lousy weather continues to slow down harvest near Alliance Libby Whittall 780-888-5097
Alliance libbywhittall@gmail.com
The drizzle, rain, and heavy dew this fall have been holding up the harvest according to the ladies chattering after church this last Sunday. The language of farming is all new to me and it took a bit of explaining before I understood the terms wet, tough, and dry in regards to grain. Apparently all the precipitation has caused the peas to fall flat, making it quite difficult to get a clean harvest. Most of the canola is lying in puffy rows and today I saw huge combines beginning to cut the wheat. I’m such a low tech person, it was a bit of a shock to see the high technology employed by farmers in 2019. Industrial farming is both a curse and a blessing, but it is a necessary evil as we attempt to feed almost 8 billion people. We have grown an extra 6 billion folks in 100 years and we all need to eat. One thing that made me very sad was hearing that gas is being stolen from combines and tractors in the field at night. It brought to mind the prayer, “Oh God help me never to be so hungry I'm forced to steal to eat.”
The message at church this Sunday was very thought-provoking. Rev. Diane talked about the difficult topic of assisted death. Her whole focus was on compassion, which struck a chord in my heart. My own brother, a soldier with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, died eight years ago in the most horrific pain from cancerous tumours forming on all of
his nerve endings. He finally went into a pain induced coma and never revived, thank God. No sentient being should be forced to endure such agony because of misguided moral judgements by uninvolved parties. Thankfully, in Canada, there is the possibility of doctor-assisted dying. The application process is quite simple and quick, but there are many chances for denial based

All we can hope is that if you or I ever end up in that unfortunate situation, mercy and compassion will be offered to us by those who have power. Our Alliance farmers’

Business Continued from Front Their official mission is: “To support, develop, and foster growth within Hardisty and District community, in a responsible manner.” When Gary and Shelly Bromby, of Bromby Welding, reached their 25th year in business, they knew they wanted to do something very special. The Brombys were both raised in Hardisty and they raised three children, Graham, Trevor (who works with them at Bromby Welding), and Melanie. Gary says when he started out on his own 25 years ago, he ran one truck, his, and was confident that he’d have enough clients to keep himself busy. Then he got a “three-week job” with Enbridge, and hasn’t looked back. He says through the ups and downs there have definitely been challenges with getting and keeping good employees because some of the work he has is seasonal, but has had as many as 60 employees, averaging around 20. In 1999, he bought the first company building, just outside Hardisty, where the business is located today. Shelly, who is a registered nurse, did all the administrative work and safety for 15 years, now three administrators and one full-time safety officer take her place. The couple are very strong commu-
nity supporters, and have spent time and money supporting hockey, the Ag. Society, the arena, the rodeo grounds, and much more. Shelly was the treasurer of minor hockey for around a decade, while Gary played for the Stampeders, then coached minor hockey, both boys and girls. Through Shelly’s work, the couple also support the Hardisty Ladies Auxiliary, and Shelly is a founding member of the Kinsmen Club, so the K-Club is dear to her heart. Not only does Shelly work at the Hardisty Thrift Shop, but the Brombys purchased the building they work out of. “Hardisty is a great place to grow up and to raise your family,” both say. So when the 25-year anniversary for the business came up, and they were too busy to take time out for a private celebration, they decided to share their celebration with the community. “We wanted to take the money that we would have spent and put it back into the community somehow.” It’s not a surprising move from this couple, say other members of the Development Group. “Gary and Shelly have made a huge contribution to our community, and in such a diverse way, through school, sports, and the community, both financially and by giving their time.” They recently sat down with Justine Ness from the Hardisty and District De-

velopment Group to talk about ideas. The Brombys have made an offer to any new business starting in the town, that after the first successful year of business, they will pay the property taxes for years two and three. Their offer was inspired by a recent promotion that the Village of Forestburg has offered. There’s no restriction on the type of business it could be, “There are a lot of businesses we need in Hardisty,” says Ness. To help a new business get a hand up, main street building owner Dustin Van Hecke has also made it known that he will rent, lease, or sell his storefront to any potential business. He purchased the building years ago with an eye towards starting a second business, but became too busy to pursue his idea. Members of the Development Group say that the whole idea is businesses helping businesses. They feel that a small group of deeply committed residents has more flexibility and the ability to make things happen in their community on a larger scale and quicker than through traditional economic development routes. “We have created a development package with information about the town and area that we have available to anyone interested in bringing a business here or starting a new business here,” Ness says. “We would love this to encourage
other communities in the region, too, and for other businesses in our community to hop on board to support growth here.” “It’s one business giving another business a hand,” says development group member Jeff Golka. “We have such great resources here, we have jobs, great paying jobs, but we need jobs for partners and teens,” says Ness. “We need to attract residents. “We need businesses that will enhance the lifestyle that Hardisty and region can provide, businesses to engage families. “We want new businesses to know they are part of a community, too.” The Group has representation from town council, and tries to keep current with the town’s plans for incentives and growth, too. “We want people to know that Hardisty is open for business, and that businesses are here. “We want our business community to be known for excellent service and great prices,” Ness says. No business reaches the milestone of 25 years without understanding that concept, and Bromby Welding, through owners Gary and Shelly, clearly represent the type of business people the group would like to see more of in the town. “When ordinary people come together and work towards a common goal, extraordinary things happen,” says Ness.

Alberta RCMP remind citizens of the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act From January 2016 to December 2018, 1,971 deaths in the province of Alberta have been attributed to apparent opioidrelated overdoses. Alberta RCMP were dispatched to several of those incidents and determined that, in some cases, it is believed that bystanders, friends or family members were hesitant to call emergency services for assistance due to concerns of potential legal repercussions. Every overdose death is tragic, and many of these potential tragedies can be avoided if people who witness overdose situations seek emergency help promptly. To encourage people to seek potentially life-saving emergency help in an overdose situation, the RCMP, in collaboration with Heath Canada and the Chief Medical Officer of Health of Alberta, want to remind residents of the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act, which provides some legal protections for people who experience or witness an overdose and call 911 or their local emergency number for help. The Act is meant to encourage people to seek emergency help during an overdose by helping to reduce fear of seeking police or medical assistance. It applies to anyone seeking emergency assistance during an overdose, including the person experiencing an overdose. The Act protects the person who seeks help, whether they stay or leave from the overdose scene, as well as anyone else who is at the scene when help arrives. You can learn more at Canada.ca/Opioids.

Galahad artist turns agricultural parts into pieces of sculpture Leslie Cholowsky Editor
Imagine driving down a country road and seeing a giant metal dragonfly, a soaring eagle, a guardian sentinel, and a wooly mammoth coming out of the side of a hill, all made from old agricultural parts. If you've been lucky enough to travel south of Galahad, you've probably already seen these giant sculptures, created by Greg Stevenson, or “Kiwi” as he's known locally. Originally from New Zealand, Greg met his wife Kathy when they were both on a tour in Australia. A few years later, he suggested she move to New Zealand, and she countered by daring him to move to Alberta. Greg and Kathy currently farm on her family's Century Farm stead, and he also works for local farmers, prior to that he worked for the former village of Galahad for 18 years in public works, and spent some time doing autobody work in Millet before that. Stevenson says that before taking up farming full time, he didn't have time to pursue any big pieces, although he'd made a few for the couple's yard, prehistoric-looking beasts that look like they walked out of a dinosaur museum. He says that when he's working on farm machinery, some old parts just strike him as possibly being useful, like swather blades, chains, bolts, drills, springs, or propane tanks, he brings them home. He doesn't like to collect too much, the couple both say there's a rule
that for every load he keeps, he has to take away another. When you're creating sculptures made entirely of metal parts, they tend to be heavy, like the pole-mounted eagle, which had to be transported to its present site in a loader bucket, weighing in at something like 500 lbs. Its position was carefully picked to be visible from the couple's home, bolted to a tall pole so it soaring over their field. He says it definitely got the attention of local birds when it first went up, too. Stevenson says he did some welding through his work, now does mostly arc welding, and has recently tried his hand at plasma arc welding. He's built a work stand in his shop out of steel beams that's heavy duty enough to work on the pieces he creates. His inspiration comes from what's around him, for instance the dragonfly sculptures are based on the real thing; Stevenson says he had a specimen on hand and referred to it often while building the huge dragonfly that is mounted on a pole just off the road near the farm. He's also been to the Drumheller badlands often, and is fascinated by the idea that there are fossilized animals just waiting to be discovered. His sentinel sculpture started out, he says, as a surveyor. Stevenson says he imagined him as walking the land, mapping the area. Sometimes, though, the materials he uses take on a life of their own as work progresses, and the addition of a shield and spear turned the figure into more of a sentinel. His newest work on his own land is the giant mammoth coming out of the side of a hill. The pair say they had to replace their barbed wire fence to gather the rusted wire used to wrap around a frame to form the body of the mammoth, which he then covered with wire and chains to mimic the long wooly hair. He wanted to make it much bigger, but he'd made the beast's head first, and had to keep the body in scale with that. It's plenty big enough, and a startling sight for travellers. Not everything he makes is that big, however. Stevenson has also created a set of choppers; motorcycles as unique as the parts used to create them. These he's made as gifts for lucky enthusiasts, with a couple on consignment in Fabyan this summer, too. They sit around 15” long, and 9-10” tall. He's also

created smaller planters, his ostriches make for unique yard ornaments. Recently he's worked on a commissioned piece for a friend, a cross between a dog, a coyote, and a prehistoric beast, complete with red reflective plastic in the eyes. It's mounted at the top of a scenic valley with the Battle River Power Plant in the background, and the river winding below, off the edge of the road. He included some special pieces from the owner in the finished beast, in honour of a special pet. He's also created some wicked snake gate post heads, and freehanded coyotes with his new plasma cutter. Stevenson says summer is his best time to work, as he waits for harvest to start he's finally got the time to put his ideas together. He says he doesn't do it for the commissions, although he would definitely consider building more custom pieces; he does it because he enjoys it, and he enjoys having the finished pieces around. For those in the area who have been lucky enough to happen upon these incredible works of art, Stevenson's work has become a point of pride for Galahad and district residents.
