‘Yes, Virginia’ one of the most famous Christmas letters Leslie Cholowsky Editor You may have heard the phrase, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus,” but are you aware of what that is from? In the year 1897 an eight-year-old girl by the name of Virgina O’Hanlon, asked her father if Santa Claus was real, because some of her friends tried to tell her he was not. He suggested that if she wanted the truth, she should write a letter to the editor of The [New York] Sun, telling Virginia, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Following his advice, she did write this letter: “Dear Editor: I am eight years old. “Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. “Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.”

“Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? “Virginia O’Hanlon.” One of the paper’s editors at the time was Francis Church. Church was a war correspondent during America’s Civil War, and had seen much suffering, both on and off the battlefield. Considering that, you might think he would slough the letter off as childish and unworthy of a reply, but he took it very seriously, and his reply has become one of the most beloved editorials of all time, perhaps the most. His response answered the question from a very philosophical point of view, and answered the question, unequivocably, “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.” That letter and editorial may have been lost to time had not a group of people, at the time of Virginia’s death in

1971, decided to create a picture book for children that illustrated the editorial and its main characters. That book was eventually translated to a television show based on the editorial. Virginia kept her letter, which was given back by the paper, and gave it to one of her granddaughters. The letter actually appeared on the popular show ‘Antiques Roadshow,’ in 1998, where it was authenticated, then appraised at a value between $20,000 and $30,000. O’Hanlon apparently received letters from others about her letter for her entire life, and she always included a copy of the editorial reply when she responded. When interviewed later in life, she said she felt the writing of the letter and its response had a very positive impact on her life.

Did you know? A bit about Kwanzaa Kwanzaa traces its origins to Africa and is celebrated across North America and other nations that have large populations that trace their heritage to Africa. The holiday begins on December 26 and continues until January 1. The main components of the celebration include family, community, and culture. Kwanzaa was not designed to replace Christmas. In fact, many Kwanzaa celebrants also celebrate Christmas. The word "Kwanzaa" is from the Swahili phrase "Matunda ya kwanza," which means "first fruits." Maulana Karenga, the professor who created the holiday in 1966, chose Swahili as the language associated with the holiday because it isn't affiliated with a particular African region or tribe. At the heart of the holiday are seven principles that celebrants embrace

and follow: unity, self-determination, collective responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. Even though the holiday

was created for African Americans, many other ethnic groups are inspired by the foundations of Kwanzaa and choose to join in the festivities.

Christmas rolls around again as another decade passes by Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Wow, another year is nearly over, and we are once again able to, on behalf of our readers, hand over a record amount to Flagstaff Christmas Sharing. Thank you for your generosity, now and year round. This year has gone past so quickly. Honestly, I’m still waiting for summer in some regard, and here it is nearly 2020. That’s going to be very odd to write. The past year has been full of changes, with a provincial and federal election happening. It’s been challenging in a lot of ways, but also incredibly rewarding. I’ve gotten to know a number of new Flagstaff residents through features that we wrote throughout the year, and I’m more convinced than ever that we live in an amazing region populated by amazing people. I’ve tried to learn this year to live in the moment, enjoy what is happening right here and right now, and not worry so much about what other people say, think, or do. I try to worry about the things I can actually control and let the rest work itself out. Thanks to a random editorial comment I made this year, I had the opportunity to rekindle my relationship with public libraries, and I’ve discovered a wonderful new way to make travelling go quickly: audio books. That’s been a big thing for me. The one constant that will be certain in the year ahead will be change. Nothing can stay the same, and it’s pointless to be afraid of what’s ahead. I expect that we will see a lot of change in the world, in the country, in our province, and

in our region in the upcoming year. Not all of it will be good, not all of it will be bad, but I think we all need to make an effort to be present for all of it. I think we should be more present in our lives, gossip less, and think more. I think we should be more responsible with our information sharing, and ensure that our sources are impeccable. I think we need to consider others when we act, and try to respect the people around us, even if they have different opinions than we do, maybe especially if they do. Diversity is necessary for us to see issues from all sides, to make informed decisions. I know the older I get the less I can tolerate the uglies; rude service, gossip, bullying, and the like. Life is hard enough without having that kind of ugliness around you as well. As old-fashioned as it is, I will try to live by the Golden Rule, to treat others as I want to be treated. One thing I am always grateful for is our readers. You give us ideas, you want to hear what we have to report, and your support means everything to us. We try very hard to bring you important information without bias, to straighten out the rumours from the truth, and to walk along with you as we all try to forge a path ahead through the unknown. We have been telling

newspaper, and to serve our community of communities, and we will do our best to maintain your trust and continue to tell the stories of Flagstaff and the people who live here. From all of us here at The Community Press, and from me especially: Thank you for a wonderful year. Have a very Merry Christmas, and all the best in 2020!

the stories of Flagstaff for 111 years, in fact we are halfway to our 112th year. That’s a lot of history! We are continually striving to represent our region, to keep a strong voice for each of our communities; to celebrate our sameness and our differences. There’s a lot of responsibility on our shoulders, but we know what it is to be a community

Dear Santa, I am really interested in how you make all the toys. Do just elves work or do you do some work? What do you do when you’re not being Santa Claus? I have been very good. I help cook muffins, that’s about it. This year I would like the Toothless Dragon Family. I saw it at the movie theatre. I would like the toys and stuffies, not the movie – I already have it. My sisters may have had a little trouble being good they may have been rude once this year. But Destiny would like anything dragon and Julia would only like Harry Potter books. But Santa… if you have extra Barbies, all three of us girls like them. But I guess my sisters have been sometimes good cause they do have to babysit me and they do a good job of that. They let me play, they let me eat what I want, I sometimes get to watch TV, and they don’t lose me. Santa – my mom would love happiness. That means not being rude, not whining, not grumpy! That would pretty much make her Christmas. Dad would love chocolate!

Santa I live in a brown house, brown door, brown roof in Sedgewick. Use the chimney cause Mom locks the door. Oh shoot, Santa, I just remembered we will be at Grandma’s house and I don’t know her address but her house is kind of skin colored and she lives on a busy street. Santa, Gramma could use more kids toys at her house. Please bring Grandpa something special but it can’t be too big, maybe a poster because he’s in the hospital right now. Santa – be careful when you are bringing our toys to Grandma’s. Watch for planes and cars on Grandma’s street! Have a good flight. I hope you have a great Christmas too! Love, Charlotte Oh dear… don’t forget my aunt. She’s coming for Christmas too. She loves anything oceany. I think we have everything covered. I want everyone to have a good Christmas. Charlotte again. Bye!

read. I am super good at it. Kyler wants an air conditioning unit for his truck. Ava would like clear glue for slime. Santa, my mom would really, really, love a new coffee mug. She loves coffee. She drinks one cup a day, it helps to keep her awake and do her job good. It makes her voice louder. Dad would like a new coffee cup. He needs coffee, too. It makes it so he doesn’t sleep at work. I live north of Lougheed beside Cabrie Tanton. You can use the chimney. Don’t worry about Tucker – he doesn’t bite and he doesn’t even bark. Come straight down the chimney, then step

down, turn around, go left, then forward then there will be a good plate of ginger cookies just for you. Enjoy! Thanks for the presents you are giving. I like the Lego you sent last year. Aloha! Merry Christmas! Have a good flight. Drive safe. Maybe you should have three cups of coffee before you get in your sleigh so you can stay awake all night delivering toys. Merry Christmas, Grady ---------Dear Santa, Merry Christmas and how are you? I am very excited for Christmas. I wonder how you drop off all those pres-

ents in time. For Christmas I'd like a BIG pool. My little sister would like a driving toy. My big sister would like a

phone. My brother would like writing papers and cars. Thank you Santa. From Tessa

---------Santa, I really want to know how the reindeer fly? I think if they eat lots of carrots they can fly. How many carrots do they have to eat – 1,049 in one day? I have been so super awesome good – 129% all the time good, but I have been fighting with my sister. I had it first then she wanted it, so Santa bring Missy her own stuff so she will leave mine alone. This year I would love a Star Wars Lego ship, Hot Wheels track that must come with lots of hot wheel cars, and a big Bumble Bee toy. It’s awesome because it transformers into a car. And Missy wants a dolly because she loves her babies. Don’t forget a blanket for the baby. Santa – my Mom would love makeup. I think that’s a mom thing. They rub it and brush it, and dab it on to look pretty. She likes diamonds, too. Daddy would like a new backpack to put food in to go to work and a new work book to write important stuff in. Papa would like a new work table at his shop and some Cheerios cereal and peanut butter toast, that’s his favourite! Grandma Debbie would love a new washing machine. Santa – I live in Canada. I have a garage that’s like together with the house. The roof is black. Park the reindeer on the roof and use the chimney. My Daddy will be making cookies for you and we won’t forget to leave carrots for the reindeer. We don’t want them to run out of their super power to fly. I love you. Last year when I was four remember I left you chicken nuggets and carrots and when I woke up they were still there!!! Sorry, I didn’t know that you only ate cookies… so no chicken

Dear Santa, What does Mrs. Claus do all day? Does she have to bake your cookies every day? Do you eat them for breakfast, dinner, and supper? I think your favourite kind is sprinkles with red icing. Am I right? I have been very nice, good all year long. I always give my brothers a hug, I always play with them, and I always be kind to them. For Christmas I would like a red drone that does what my hands do; if I put my hands up it goes up. If I get a drone I’ll take pictures of everyone. Gavin wants a blue drone, Kohen wants a new hockey bag, and Nate wants a farm house with a dog, cat, and a horse. Santa, please surprise my mom and bring her something that would make her breakfast, lunch, and supper so she wouldn’t have to. She doesn’t like to cook but the best thing she does cook is a ham sandwich. Daddy would like the same thing but except it would do all of his work in the shop. If they didn’t have to cook or work they would just take a rest all day. Santa I live in the country, outside of Lougheed in Canada. There are lots of cameras at my house so I think my mom and dad will be able to see

you coming. Also Santa, watch out, my house has an alarm, so turn it off so you don’t wake us up. My whole family is going to make cookies for you and we will be leaving carrots for the rein-

deer so they have energy to fly. Thanks for all the good presents you always bring, my favourite was the snap bracelet. Thanks for coming, good bye, Love, Brielle

Santa: Just wondering what you do all year when you’re not working? I think you just eat cookies. You should talk to Grandma Helen – she makes good cookies. I love her gingerbread men ones, especially if she puts icing on them. I have been so, so, super good! I helped a little boy on the playground. I help clean up at home if I get to have a play date. So just so you know, I kinda wrote on some paper I wasn’t supposed to… so that’s enough about that…. So since I have been more good than bad, I would like a Rudolph stuffy. I need to have triplets – shoot – I already have three. Bring Christmas ornaments for my tree that’s just for me! Ocean Lily has been pretty good, not as good as me – she did get into the flour, made a big mess, and got my Mom excited and a little super mad, but bring her a new dress. It’s ok, she’s just a cute Dennis the Menace. She would cry if she didn’t get a present. Santa bring Mom a new cookbook. She just loves to cook. Her best meal is spaghetti, she pours it out of a bag. Daddy would like new shoes – grey ones, to wear to the office. Santa bring Grandma Helen a new cook spoon cause she likes to cook, too! Gramma Pat needs new glasses. Grandpa wants and needs a new hat. Santa, bring presents to my red house in the country with the white roof, kinda looks like a barn. Feel free to use the chimney. I know you love cookies, so I’ll leave you some. Don’t worry, I don’t have any dogs that bite but I do have three cats – if you let them in

chase them out before you leave! Enjoy your cookies! Have a great flight! If I think of more toys I’ll send you another letter… sometimes it takes me a long time to think. Remember you should get Grandma Helen’s cookie recipe! Love The good girl Olivia that likes cookies, too

Daddy would like a chocolate bar. We are really busy but we will try and make you some cookies. If we are too busy we’ll leave you chips and if we don’t have milk we’ll leave you water.

Say “Merry Christmas” to Mrs. Claus, rest up before Christmas. Sleep well, don’t watch TV too much before bed. Remember you can bring just a few clothes. Love, Ryley

If you’re going to bring clothes, bring ones with sparkles on them. Santa I have been 20% good this year. I help Grandma, I vacuum, and I do the dishes. I may have fought with my brother 10 times but now that it’s Christmas, I’m sorry Santa. I won’t let him bug me any more until Christmas. Santa, I would love some Jo Jo dolls. I’m not sure what they do because I don’t have any. Cooper is my brother, he’s a boy and is 10 years old. I don’t know what boys like just bring something good. Santa, please bring Mom diamonds, she likes things that sparkle; she will wear them to the Co-op to get groceries.

Dear Santa, How are the reindeer? How do the reindeer get their magic power? Do you feed them magic powder food or do they get magic powers from the magic Christmas star that only comes out at Christmas? That’s what I think. I’ve been a good boy. I do my chores like cleaning the house, playing down stairs, and I clean up my plate from supper. Santa, am I on your good list? Please check it because I should be… This year for Christmas I would like a New Holland combine with tracks on it. I need it to have tracks so my combine won’t get stuck, that’s important!! And the New Holland is important, it’s my favourite kind, it’s better than John Deere. Santa, my baby brother would like a baby bottle with milk and send more diapers, he uses two a day. Micaiah wants a hockey stick because my sister broke his. Santa, my mom would love a new coffee cup because she’s an adult and her favourite drink is coffee. It just makes her feel good. Dad would want a hockey stick, too. We are going to have a big hockey game in the basement. Santa, I live on a farm.

You go down the road, when you see a train track go over it, then go on the gravel road, then turn, then turn, then when you see lots of trees turn, then turn this way and then that way, then that’s my house. It’s a normal colour with a black roof. My dog’s name is Chase, he maybe will bite so bring dog bones to calm him down and make him think about something else. We will try and get some carrots for the reindeer ‘cause right now all we have are rotten ones in the second fridge. Could you ask the reindeer if they would be okay with an apple snack instead? Thank you for all the toys and presents you are going to bring me, my family and friends. I like and appreciate your kindness. Love, Blaine That’s all!

good but he does say “NO!” a lot! He said “I don’t love you” to my dad but he wanted a Monsterasurus and Dad wouldn’t buy it because his birthday wasn’t around the corner. But he does love Dad again now. He would love everyone more if he got the Monsterasurus for Christmas. He would even love you, Santa. Santa, my mom would love, well, she pretty much has everything ‘cause she and I just love to have everything. Last year she got makeup and I think she threw it out so bring more makeup so she can go to her friend’s house looking good and beautiful. Dad... I don’t know what he wants; he only

Dear Santa, You sure were quick last year when you brought the presents. I was trying to hear for you, I was kinda hoping to see you but I was too tired, you were taking too long to come. This year could you put us on the top of the list? My bed is time is 10 minutes. I have been 16 minutes good this year. I eat my vegetables when I’m hungry, I

work around the house, but really I just work on my tablet while mom does the work. I made my bed for 10 days. Santa, this year I would like a puppy, that when I pet it, it will look at me and woof! It’s not real, but kinda real. Santa, Nathan has been nothing but bad. He shined the flashlight in my eyes, he took the pillows off my bed, he just keeps messing stuff up, he even took my homework away. So, bring Nathan a toy bus. Santa, my mom would love a baker for

when she works - it will do the cooking when she’s gone. I hope the baker can make grilled cheese sandwiches. Santa, bring Daddy a book, a worker book. I live in Lougheed, check your Santa book

for directions cause I live in a new house, it’s brown with bedrooms. Remember to come earlier this year; I would like to meet you and thank you for the presents. Love, Natalie

The promise of Christmas. There was a time when Christmas meant that something very good was about to happen. But as we get older, life gets complicated, and we lose our child-like appreciation of it. If you had misfortune recently, we’d like you to know that Christmas will come, good things will happen, and the new year is waiting for us to greet it. And we think that’s something worth looking forward to.

Dear Santa, I have always liked you, because you have always given me the presents I want. I have been 50 hundred two million good. I have cleaned the house, and I also go outside to play and in the basement when my mom and dad need a break. So, Santa, I’m good but my brother does fight. He starts it! He wants my toys but he has his own! This year I would like a toy Nerf gun and a toy coffee maker. My brother gets nothing cause he was bad, remember. Colby could use a little playhouse. Santa, my mom would love a new hair thing that twirls her hair and makes her look beautiful and also bring her a new pen. Daddy would like some parts for the combine. Send Grandma Judy... oh never mind she can order her own thing, she’s good at that. Send Dwayne wood. He’s a good builder. Papa Neil would like a new quad. He will give us rides all day long. My other Grandpa Bob and Gramma want a real new green combine because the other yellow combines didn’t do a very quick job of combining. A new green one might help them. Santa, I live right by Bennet’s and Rowen’s house but I know that you know my house ‘cause you made it there last year. Even if you forget the directions, I know that you just go to every house so you don’t miss anyone and the elves just have the naughty list of kids, but remember my name isn’t on the list, Lincoln just might be on the list. I love you Santa, Bye, Kale Oh ya, how old are you, Santa? ----------

Santa, I am wondering does Rudolph’s nose really glow? Does it glow all year long or just at Christmas? I have been pretty much really good this year; Lucas has been trying to fight me but I say “NO!” I play with one toy at a time and then put it back. I can’t think of anything else but I know I have been good. This year I would like a barn with a tractor with triangle wheels. I had another barn but my mom gave it away. Lucas wants a game to play like Xbox, Sophie would like a Baby Alive doll. Santa, please bring my mom another coffee cup. She likes to drink tea, it makes her feel happy. Daddy would like a new Jeep cause he lost ours in Red Deer cause the robber wanted it. I kinda live in the middle of Sedgewick and Killam, there is white on the fence and there are Christmas lights on the roof. We usually leave the door unlocked so just come in, put all the presents under the tree and then stop for your snack of cookies and milk; they will be on the kitchen table. Remember my tractor needs to have triangle wheels and don’t forget the batteries. It’s no fun to have a toy and no batteries. Lukas had this problem. I love you Santa.

Oh ya, don’t forget Grandma Gaye would like a nice cup of hot coffee and a piece of toast with jam. Grandpa would like coffee too cause he needs one cup every morning to wake him up and help Dad farm. I’m done now, Ben ---------Dear Santa, Ho, ho, ho! How do you really fly? What if the weather is bad, can you still fly? I have been five two five good. I clean the toys at home, I clean up the play dough, that’s lots of work, and I get dressed by myself. Santa, I want a combine, a red one, and a tractor, a red one. I need them to farm.

Sammy wants a trailer, a black one. George wants a combine, a yellow one. Santa, mom would like cookies and new shoes. Daddy would like new shoes too. Santa, I live in a blue house. I go a long, long, long ways on the school bus. Ask Gerald, Chelsey, and Dusty how to get there. I go on the bus for five minutes. My dad will leave the door open for you so you can get in. We will be making brown cookies for you to eat. Ho, ho, ho! Merry Christmas, Tony ---------Dear Santa, I really like you. You are very nice to bring everyone toys.

I have been a very good boy, better than last year. Last year I fought with Tony and Aaron but not this year. All is good, super good, 102% good. So now I would like a remote control truck and a remote drone. If I get a drone I am going to take pictures of cool things. Bring my brothers the same thing then I won’t have to share, then there won’t be any fighting. Anna would like a ferris

wheel, Mom would love candy, dark chocolate, and a broom. Dad would like a drone, too. Santa, I live out of Sedgewick. See the golfing place, drive past there then drive farther, then you can see the horses, then you’re there. Use the chimney. Mom will make you a snack. Merry Christmas, I like you, you are a nice man. Love, Jacob

Dear Santa, I have no questions for you. I’m just interested in the toys. I have been very good, thumbs-up good this year. This year I would like some Hulk figures because Hulk is my favourite. My brother didn’t tell me what he wants so I don’t know. Santa, I think my dad would like a comfy blanket to sleep with. He likes to sleep a lot even in the morning. Gramma would like a little cute teddy bear to snuggle with. Grandpa would like licorice. That’s it, have a nice Christmas. Gabriel Oh ya, don’t forget I live in Lougheed, it’s a white house you can see out the window, you will see Santa moving his head and a reindeer moving its head, you’ve got the right house. Look out the window by the computer. Now that’s it, Gabriel again ---------Dear Santa, I like that you bring presents for Christmas. How heavy is your bag? That’s lots of work. I’ve been a good girl. I’m going to clean the house up before you come. For Christmas I would like a puzzle and a game. Bring my sisters puzzles too, my brothers like puzzles too. Santa, my mom would like cleaner stuff to clean the floors. Daddy would like pizza. I live at Lougheed in a white house. I really like Christmas, I will be at home waiting for Christmas. Love, Emily ---------Santa, What are the elves

doing? Are they still making toys? Will they get done in time? Do they know how to make Hatchimals? If you don’t know what they look like check out the grocery store or Walmart. I have been a lot good, 134 times. I clean my room, make my bed, do the garbages, make my mom’s bed, and no fighting with my sisters. So, Santa, this year I would like a Hatchimals. I have nine at home already but they are my favourites so I need more. Thank you. My big sister wants a blinger to make her hair pretty and I want to use it, too. Sydney wants a Hatchimal, too. Mom would love a goat, a baby one. So, when us kids are at school she would have a goat to keep her company. Dad needs slippers, he had none. Now straight in the morning he has to put socks on so he really needs some slippers. Santa, I live close to my Grandma’s house, she’s across the road, so when you’re dropping off our presents please get her two soaps for the sink ‘cause she’s almost out and Grandpa would like gloves so he can work in the shop. We will make you some yummy Santa cookies and reindeer cookies. Remember my house is grey. It’s by Grandma’s, it’s in Canada, and we have a white and orange dog named Griffin. He might want you to throw the Frisbee or the ball. He doesn’t get tired very easy; he might want you to throw it 100 times. I’m going to make you a picture. Thanks, Santa, for always giving us gum, even when we don’t ask for it. My favourite kind is watermelon, grape, or cherry. Thanks for the presents. I kinda forget what I got last year but I’m sure I liked it. Morgan

Dear Santa, Have you got all your toys made for this year? Especially all the dolls, that’s what I’m interested in. If you don’t have your work done and all the toy dolls made you should shop at Toys ‘R Us or Walmart, but I think the stores might be sold out so stay up late and get the toy dolls made please. Santa, just to let you know I have been 24% good. I have slept in my own bed all night and get wipes and diapers for my mom and I eat carrots for supper. Now that you know that, I would like a Mandy doll and a Peggy doll, one with purple hair, one with blue hair, and one with pink hair. I already told my mom if I don’t get these dolls it will break my heart. And you won’t want to break a little girl’s heart!! Santa bring my baby brother a truck. Santa, my mom would really like another baby cause she was talking about it with my Dad. Dad would like alcohol, monster kind is the best with a paw print. Nana Donna, also known as Don-Dog, could use some wine. She just loves it, red or white will work. Kenny-Boy (he likes it when I call him that) for Christmas really doesn’t want to have to work. Gramma Cindy wants pony tails and new bed sheets. Poppa Bill just likes burgers. Santa, my house is black and grey with a couple Christmas

lights that are purple, blue, and green. We have no chimney, use the door, use the magic key from playschool, I think it probably still has the magic. Dad bought 100 cookies for you Santa; they have white chocolate chips in them. I like them. I always ask for one but Mom and Dad say “No!” But Dad eats one a day, but Richelle Buelow eats the most, at least four a day!! We have to stop talking about eating cookies, Miss Vicki, ‘cause it just makes me only think cookies, not school. So, hopefully there will still be cookies left when you come, if not talk to Richelle Buelow. Can you keep a secret? Don’t tell anyone!!! Especially don’t tell Miss. O... but I touched the elves on

the shelf, real life ones cause they have secret magic. Oh shoot, I touched them and now I can’t fly, can’t float, can’t do anything, they didn’t share their magic! Shoot, shoot! I hope you got all the dolls made. Don’t forget I usually always get what I ask for, don’t break my heart. And I am also very interested in maybe getting a real puppy for Christmas, a baby German Shepherd and with that maybe add a real live bird. I already got the bird cage. I hope you all have a great Christmas. Looking forward to my new toys, but don’t bring me any Lou Dolls, that’s important! Good bye, Love from a good girl, Harper. If you have extra room in your toy bag just bring all the dolls

from Ugly Ville. Good night for real.

Dear Santa, Santa, remember my home is in Sedgewick. From the store you have to turn and you are at my house. It is white and red and the roof is black. We don’t have a chimney so use the door, hope Mom doesn’t lock it. I have been really good. I listen to my mom and dad, I do what they say, that’s just all I do. Santa, this year I would like a race car track and a remote control race car, I saw one at the Sedgewick store. Can your elves make one just like it? My brother wants Lego, my sisters want unicorns that light up. My mom would love something for her phone, something to hold it. Dad would like a radio; he loves to put on music. I will leave you the kind of cookies my mom and dad make. I’ll leave them right by the door. When is it Christmas? I have been waiting for a long time. I’m getting very excited and tired of waiting. Hope Christmas comes soon, Lincoln

More than 170 years later, Dickens’ classic tale still relevant For many people, over many years, watching a rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is a part of their holiday tradition. Some will take in a local theatrical production of classic tale, as residents in the Sedgewick and Daysland areas were able to do this year, others will watch one of the many film versions, be it animated version staring Mickey Mouse or in black and white with Alastair Sim. A Christmas Carol tells the redemptive story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly and callous old man and his visitation by four ghosts on Christmas Eve. Scrooge’s otherworldly visitors show him that he must abandon his greedy, moneyloving ways, or else his soul will be forced to bear heavy chains for all of eternity. He must care for his fellow man and show compassion and charity if he wishes to escape that terrible fate. The tale is commonly viewed as a harsh commentary 19th century industry capitalism. Dickens novella was first published in December 1843, to great critical acclaim and highly successful sales. It has never been out of print and has been made into hundreds of adaptations in film, opera, and other media. Although more than 160 years have passed since A Christmas Carol was first published, the message of the story still has universal appeal. Some historians credit the publication of A Christmas Carol as being the impetus for a secularization of the Christmas holiday, and credit the story for the returning of the holiday to one merriment and festivity in Britain and America after a period of sobriety and s o m b e r n e s s . They argue that Dickens sought to construct Christmas as a familycentered festival of generosity, in contrast to the

community-based and church-centred observations, the observance of which had dwindled during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Dickens influenced many aspects of Christmas that are celebrated today in Western culture, such as family gatherings, holiday meals and drink, dancing, games, and a festive generosity of spirit. Following the story’s publication the phrase “Merry Christmas” was popularized and the name Scrooge entered the English language as a synonym for a miser. Say “Bah! Humbug!” and everyone knows that you are being dismissive of the Christmas spirit. Dickens’ own childhood experiences shaped the story of A Christmas Carol. In 1824, at the age of 12, his father was arrested for debt and sent to the debtors’ prison. His family moved into the prison, but Dickens had to take lodgings nearby, leave school and begin work in a factory, earning six shillings a week pasting

labels on jars of shoe polish. The often cruel, unsafe and unregulated working conditions borne by the factory employees, predominately

children, would influence much of Dickens’ work and his interest in the reform of socio-economic and labour conditions, the rigours of

which he believed were unfairly borne by the poor. Among his bestknown works are Great Expectations, David Cop-

perfield, Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, Bleak House, Nicholas Nickleby, The Pickwick Papers, and, of course, A Christmas Carol.

Ingredients: 2 large egg whites 1⁄4 teaspoon salt 2⁄3 cup sugar 1 cup chocolate chips (mini ones are best) Directions: Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare cookie sheets by covering with parchment or foil. Beat egg whites until stiff. Add salt and sugar and beat a little more. Fold in chips. You can reserve a few teaspoons and press a few into the tops of each cookie. Drop batter by teaspoons on baking sheets. (Or use a piping bag and pipe in small 2” rounds) Place in oven and turn oven off. Let set overnight (no peeking!) It’s important not to open the oven door until morning so you don’t let the heat out! These cookies can be stored in an airtight container for several days. Take care when stacking the cookies; they are fragile. Variations: add a cup of toasted, chopped nuts to the batter, or add crushed candy canes and a touch of swirled red food colouring to the batter. Note: It's best to make these cookies on a cool, dry day. Humidity may cause them to become sticky.

Consider giving the gift of an experience Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Giving the gift of an experience is a rising trend, particularly among millennials. Harris research has determined that millennials (defined as people born between 1981 and 1996) highly value experiences, and they are increasingly spending time and money on them. Types of experiences include athletic pursuits, cultural visits, concerts, social events, and various travel. The research goes on to say that more than three out of four millennials choose to spend money on a desirable experience instead of buying a product. And it's not just millennials. Overall, consumer spending has shifted in the last 10 to 15 years. HSBC bank chief economist Kevin Logan has said consumer spending on recreation, travel, and eating out has been trending upward for more than a decade, while purchases of clothing and shoes as a share of discretionary spending has dropped. These trends can help drive purchases during holiday gift-giving. Gifts that are more experienceoriented may be more appreciated by their recipients. It doesn’t have to be extravagant, or involve huge expenses, or even a lot of travel. Instead of a tie or slippers, gift Dad a month at the gym, or a two-day ski pass; then offer to go with them! If Mom is super stressed at Christmas, maybe she needs a gift certificate for a yoga class and a mediation session. Or maybe she needs a session with her favourite hairdresser for a new style or colour. Sometimes it’s as simple as purchasing a gift certificate from a favourite local restaurant for the treat of a night out. In Flagstaff, tickets to both the Daysland and Forestburg Concert Series, or the next Sedgewick concert count

as an experience, and certainly would knock it out of the park over another candle or pair of socks. Think ahead to summer and take into account what your loved one’s interests are, then see what’s available locally. Kids and grandkids can also give a variation of these gifts of an experience with home-made

coupons that are good for “Making Cookies,” or “A picnic in the park,” or “Let’s go see a movie.” Hiking, swimming, skating, taking a ride on the Battle River Railway; these are all experiences you could invite loved ones to share with you. These days together time can be the most precious gift you can give.

Maybe the experience could include things like having family photos done, or couples photos, or even dog photos, if that’s your thing. If you put your mind to it and think outside the box, the possibilities are endless, and you don’t even have to leave Flagstaff to find something special to share.

Facts about Christmas

Do you know which provinces boast the most generous gift givers? Or how many turkeys get devoured at Canadian dinner tables? Here we go . . . A Christmas Story has Canadian roots – While the tale appears to be all-American, a substantial part of the movie was filmed in Canada. Ralphie’s school, the Chinese restaurant where his family ate, the famous swearing scene, as well as the interior segments were all shot in Canada. And where else would you find the old TTC “red rocket” streetcars? The Atlantic provinces spend the most on Christmas – A 2018 survey conducted by the Retail Council of Canada discovered that residents of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador plan to spend more per capita ($813 on average per person) in retail stores than any of the other Canadian provinces. Citizens of Ontario and British Columbia will cause cash registers to ring in holiday exultation, too, as they ranked in at no. two ($805) and three ($688), respectively. Quebecers plan to spend the least, at $458 on average per person. Canadians love department stores and alcohol – According to Statistics Canada, Canadians prefer to shop in person. With total sales of nearly $3.2 billion dollars, the number one place for

Canadians to check off their holiday shopping lists was department stores. Care to guess the second most-visited venue for festive spenders? Pop the cork and raise a glass to Canada’s beer, liquor, and wine stores. Their $1.6 billion dollars worth of holiday sales earned the runner-up position. Canada grows a lot of Christmas trees – Did you know our country had 1,872 Christmas tree farms in 2016? According to the 2016 Census of Agriculture, the farms were concentrated in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. If you can’t spend Christmas in Canada, you might as well take a little piece of the country

with you. In 2016, Canada exported 1.95million Christmas trees to over 20 countries, including Australia, France, Jamaica, and Thailand. Rudolph was Canadian – If you were born in Canada after 1964, your Christmases probably involved an annual viewing of the “animagic” holiday special, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Rankin-Bass, an American production company, created this beloved Christmas program, but did you know that there’s a secret Canadian connection? All the characters’ voices – with the exception of Sam the Snowman – were performed by Canadian actors, singers, and voiceover artists at the RCA Vic-

tor Studios in Toronto. Canadians really dig turkey – According to Turkey Farmers of Canada, Canadians consumed a mighty 153.1-million kg of turkey in 2017. During Christmas that year, 3.3-million whole turkeys were purchased – that’s equal to 47 per cent of all the whole turkeys sold over 2017.

pairs of pointe shoes have been used by The Nutcracker‘s ballerinas. Christmas isn’t only once a year – In some corners of Canada, it’s Christmas 365 days a year. Welcome to Rein-

deer Station (Northwest Territories), Christmas Island (Nova Scotia), Sled Lake (Saskatchewan), Holly (Ontario), Noel (Nova Scotia), Turkey Point (Ontario), and Snowflake (Manitoba).

Merry Christmas from everyone at

Canadians can’t get enough of ballet – Dreaming of Sugar Plum fairies, mice, and soldiers dancing through your holiday season? Since 1995, the National Ballet of Canada’s The Nutcracker has been wowing audiences from coast to coast. Over one million people have watched the annual play since its premiere, and as of 2018, 6,722

Do you hear what I hear? Said the night wind to the little lamb: "Do you see what I see? Way up in the sky, little lamb Do you see what I see? hear? Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy Do you hear what I hear? A song, a song, high above the trees With a voice as big as the sea With a voice as big as the sea" Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king: "Do you know what I know? In your palace warm,

He did whistle and she did sing On Christmas day, on Christmas day He did whistle and she did sing On Christmas day in the morning And all the bells on earth did ring On Christmas day, on Christmas day And all the bells on earth did ring On Christmas day in the morning

Said the king to the people everywhere: "Listen to what I say! Pray for peace, people everywhere! Listen to what I say!

That Christmas Spirit

Christmas is that time of year For being with the ones we love Sharing so much joy and cheer What a wonderful feelin' Watching the ones we love Having so much fun

Why can't it remain All through the year Each day the same Heyeah, that's what I wanna hear Heh heh, it's truly amazin' That spirit of Christmas

I was sittin' by the fire side Taking a walk through the snow Listening to a children's choir Singing songs about Jesus The blessed way that he came to us

All the kin folk gather 'round The lovely Christmas tree Hearts are glowing full of joy Sense the gifts that we're giving And the love that we're living

Why can't it remain (why can't it raemain?) Ohhh all through the year (all through theyear) Each day the same (each day the same) Heyeah, that's what I wanna hear I'll tell ya, it's truly amazin' That spirit of Christmas (Why can't it remain?) Why can't it remain? (All through the year) All through the year

(Each day the same) Each day the same That's what I wanna hear Listen to me, it's truly amazin' That spirit of Christmas Oh, it's truly amazin' That spirit of Christmas Ain't it so, it's truly amazin' Yeah, that spirit of Christmas Oh Christmas -Ray Charles

All I Want for Christmas is You I don't want a lot for Christmas There is just one thing I need I don't care about the presents Underneath the Christmas tree I just want you for my own More than you could ever know Make my wish come true oh All I want for Christmas is you I don't want a lot for Christmas There is just one thing I need, and I Don't care about the presents Underneath the Christmas tree I don't need to hang my stocking There upon the fireplace Santa Claus won't make me happy With a toy on Christmas day

To the North Pole for Saint Nick I won't even stay awake To hear those magic reindeer click

The one I really need Won't you please bring my baby to me quickly

'Cause I just want you here tonight Holding on to me so tight What more can I do Oh, Baby all I want for Christmas is you

I don't want a lot for Christmas This is all I'm asking for I just wanna see my baby Standing right outside my door

All the lights are shining So brightly everywhere And the sound of children's Laughter fills the air

I just want you for my own More than you could ever know Make my wish come true Baby all I want for Christmas is you

HOLIDAY SONG BOOK

God rest ye Merry, Gentlemen

God rest you merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, For Jesus Christ our Saviour Was born upon this day, To save us all from Satan's power When we were gone astray: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. 2. From God our heavenly Father A blessed angel came, And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

3. The shepherds at those tidings Rejoiced much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding In tempest, storm and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway, This blessed Babe to find:

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

an English traditional Christmas carol. The melody is in the minor mode. It was published by William B. Sandys in 1833, although the author is unknown.

4. But when to Bethlehem they came, Whereat this Infant lay, They found Him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray: O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. 5. Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All other doth deface:1 O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. The 12 days of Christmas "On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree." The familiar lyrics of this tune are sung as part of Christmas caroling and holiday celebrations, reaching a crescendo each time singers belt out "five golden rings." The song is an English Christmas carol that was written in 1720. While it references plenty of giftgiving, it's easy to assume the song is about giving Christmas gifts. However, the 12 days in the song actually refer to the birth of Jesus Christ.

The 12 days of Christmas, also known as the Twelvetide, refers to the festive Christian season that celebrates the Nativity of Jesus. In fact, the start of these days occurs on December 25 and extends until the evening of January 5, the day before the Epiphany, known as Twelfth Night. Each day corresponds to a remembrance of different religious events or people. Christmas celebrants can celebrate well into the new year. Commemorating the 12 days of Christmas can include small festivities from De-

cember 25 to January 5. On Twelfth Night, historically known for parties, modern-day fanfare can mark the culmination of the Christmas season with the last of gift-giving occurring on the Epiphany. Gifting, hosting friends

and family, attending religious services, participating in charitable events, or opening one's home to neighbours and those who can use some companionship are all ways to make the 12 days of Christmas more special.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here and that means it's time to offer our best wishes to our neighbours, customers, associates and friends. We appreciate your giving us so much to celebrate this holiday season.

...Our heartfelt best wishes and gratitude to our loyal customers and friends.

History of the Stocking Merry Christmas The holiday season is rife with tradition. Some holiday traditions, such as holiday lighting displays, are impossible to miss, while others are more subtle and possibly even unknown to many celebrants. One tradition that falls into the latter category involves the placing of oranges into Christmas stockings. The origins of Christmas stockings are rooted in legend, and one of the more popular tales involves a widowed father of three beautiful girls. According to Smithsonian.com, this father was struggling to make ends meet and was concerned that his financial struggles would affect his daughters' ability to find a spouse. As the legend goes, St. Nicholas was wandering through the man's town and heard of his concerns. Recognizing that the man was unlikely to accept charity, St. Nicholas slid down the chimney of his house and placed three gold balls in the girls' recently laundered stockings, which were hanging by the fire to dry. The value of the gold balls, which were discovered the following morning, was enough to ensure the girls could eventually wed. So what does that have to do with

oranges? Those who wanted to replicate the tale could not so easily come upon gold balls to place in stockings, so they chose something similar in appearance: oranges.

Don’t forget your bird friends over the holiday season The arrival of winter forces everyone to confront the changes synonymous with the season, and local wildlife is no exception. Low temperatures, harsh winter storms, and a scarcity of food can make it challenging for wildlife, including birds, to thrive throughout the winter. Even though several species of birds are migratory and travel to warmer climates to wait out winter, many others stay put. The Audubon Society says that keeping close to home helps some species of birds maintain their territories. Some birds will puff up to retain heat; others will seek shelter in dense foliage or cavities to avoid the elements. Many birds will huddle together to share warmth. Another way of keeping warm is building up fat as an insulator and energy source. The Audubon Society says more than 10 percent of some birds' winter body weight may be fat. That can be challenging to maintain when common sources of food, such as insects and berries, disap-

pear as winter wears on. This is when some human intervention can prove handy, advise ornithologists. A few simple efforts may benefit birds and other wildlife that may not hibernate winter away or escape to the tropics. · Have a supply of food, bird feeders, houses, and any other bird-related gear at the ready before the storms really rev up. · Invest in nutritious food, such as black oil sunflower seeds or blends that are high in black oil sunflower seeds. You also can make available more foods that are high in fat, such as suet, peanut butter, or even whole peanuts. Mother Nature Network also suggests adding meal worms if they can be found. · Choose feeders that will keep seed dry; otherwise, it will be prone to bacterial and fungal growth. · Don't discard fallen leaves or any downed twigs or pruned boughs from trees. This will give birds material for creating shelter or hiding

away when the weather gets especially brutal. When the Christmas tree is finished for the season, place it in the yard as a windbreak for birds. · Put shallow water sources around so birds can drink. Replace them frequently if water freezes. Wild birds can benefit from some help when the temperatures start to drop in winter.

Make poinsettias last longer Poinsettias are synonymous with the holiday season. These colorful plants brighten up homes with their vibrant hues in variations of red, white, and pink, making them a holiday decoration many people cannot live without. While they're most visible during the often chilly holiday season, poinsettias prefer warm weather. Poinsettias are native to Central America and originally flourished in an area of southern Mexico. The Aztecs used the plant for decorative and medicinal purposes. The poinsettia may have remained a regional plant if not for the efforts of Joel Roberts Poinsett, who was the first United States Ambassador to Mexico under President James Madison. Poinsett, who would later found the Smithsonian Institution, had a love of botany and became enamored with the brilliant red plants he saw in Mexico. Eventually, Poinsett began growing the plants at home in South Carolina, and friends and others soon coveted them. Poinsettias are beautiful and the bracts (modified

leaves) can be vibrantly colored. That signature vibrancy is why many people would like to preserve their poinsettias to last beyond the New Year, which is possible with the right care. The following are some tips, courtesy of Mother Nature's Network, Habersham Gardens, Oregon Live, and Phoenix Flower Shops, to keep poinsettias thriving past the holiday season. · Start with healthy plants that have full leaves, bracts and deep colors. · Poinsettias do best when the temperature is between 65 and 75 F. Temperatures below that or drafts from cold windows can cause leaves to drop. · Position the plant in a room that gets indirect sunlight for at least six hours per day. If direct sunlight can't be avoided, diffuse the light with a sheer curtain. · Poinsettias need welldrained soil. Overwatering or allowing roots to sit

in wet soil can cause the leaves to fall off prematurely. Water thoroughly only when the pot looks dry. In households with temperatures around 70 F, the plant should be watered about once a week. · Fertilize the plant after the blooming season with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer. · Try placing poinsettias in or near a bathroom, as they prefer high humidity. It may be possible to get poinsettias to rebloom next season. Allow the poinsettias to dry out a little more in the spring. In May, cut about four inches from each stem to produce a lush, full plant during the winter. The plants can be moved outside in June and during the summer, but keep them away from direct sunlight. Return the poinsettias indoors beginning around October. Make sure the plants get at least 12 hours of darkness per day for around eight weeks in October and November.
