Lamont Councillor doubles as coach of world-class athletes BY JOHN MATHER Lamont town councillor Dave Taylor wears two very different sets of clothing. In his councillor vestments he is busy trying to improve life in the town through improving recreation facilities while keeping costs under control. Outside of council he dons a Captain Canada cape as coach of up and coming Paralympics Nordic biathlon competitor Derek Zaplonsky of Smoky Lake and as one of the specialist coaches of the Canadian National Paralympics ski team. Taylor, 49, was born in Lamont and grew up and attended school in town. He left to go to the University of Alberta. “When I was growing up I was always called Dave,” he said. “But when I started skiing competitively, a Norwegian skier learned my second name is Bjorn and he started calling me by it. It stuck and in all my skiing circles I’m Bjorn Taylor.” Taylor skied cross-country and biathlon as a youth growing up. He has degrees in physical education and sports physiology from the University of Alberta. “I was working at the University of Calgary coordinating some of their skiing programs when I landed a job at Canmore working with the national Paralympics team,” he explains. “I was able to do program consulting and program co-ordination for the cross country and biathlon teams.” The program had a visually impaired skier medal at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics in 2002. This resulted in the national program receiving more funding and it took off. Taylor was then contracted to work with the national team in administration, and as a program director. He also functions as a wax technician doing wax support work for the team. He soon moved up to become the team leader at the 2006 Torino and 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Taylor said he was contemplating completing a master’s degree when the Canmore opportunity came along and he jumped at it. “But you have to be wealthy to live in Canmore and working for the national team wasn’t going to allow me and my family to live there.” Continued on Page 3

Bruderheim counting on citizens to step up and be counted MAUREEN SULLIVAN Census enumerators will be staring the count in Bruderheim the week of April 16th, so get
ready to count yourselves in. Making sure that the Town of Bruderheims' data is current, maxi-
mizes the amount of grant funding the town will receive for programs and services. The census is an offi-
cial count of the number of people living in the community. The count reflects the growth of the community and assists
the town in planning and budgeting, Decisions regarding future municipal services such as future transpiration networks, location of schools, parks, utilities etc. are based to a large extent on statistics of population growth collected in the census. Much of the grant funding received from the
provincial government is based on a per capita basis and an accurate census count ensures that maximum grants are received.

“Our goals was to win seven or eight medals and we ended up with 16.” “This Nordic team had more medals than the entire Canadian Paralympics team in Sochi, Russia in 2014.” The team, explains Taylor, is funded by Sport Canada for day to day operations, the National Ski Federation which has sponsors to support the cross country program; and by the Own the Podium program which receives private funding and is based on result. ”We’ve been delivering so our funding is pretty strong right now,” adds Taylor. He said the job with the national team is a specialized skill set and there is a core group who have been together for several years which allows the team to mesh well.
Immersed in the Lamont community After moving back to Lamont in 2007, Taylor immersed himself in the community volunteering with minor hockey and minor baseball. “Eventually I was encouraged to run for council by friends and through a personal interest,” he states. “People want to know why things are done. Coming from an operations backgrounds I knew some of the reasons behind decisions and instead of complaining, I want to try and make things better.” He said Lamont had lots of things to do but not so much for middle groups of kids aged from 10 to early teens. “We do have a wonderful place in Hillside Park and I wanted to get a BMX track built,” he explains. “I went to council and the project

Opinion Humboldt horror hits close to home Most of us didn’t know the members of the Humboldt Broncos Jr. A hockey team who lost their lives or were seriously injured when their team bus collided with a semi-tractor trailer truck on April 6 near Tisdale, Sask. Why then are we all shook to our core in grief?; as a unit, as a nation. Unless, in a way, we did know them all. If we didn’t know the Humboldt team, we knew some very special people just like them our children. It makes us swallow that lump in our throat knowing we drove our children down eerily similar winter roads, or loaded them onto a bus to send them off with their friends to a sporting event or school trip. We took them to winter shrines - our hockey arenas - so they could experience the incredible joy most Canadians have received playing our national pastime. We too spent many hours watching and waiting in these shrines. We got to know each of the team’s players through their parents, who we celebrated victories with or consoled after losses or injuries. We shared cup after cup of coffee together, and looked forward to an arena burger, or hot dog, as the cold arena days became long. We got to know each other’s lives, and relationships, and so when the kids moved to other levels of hockey, and seasons ended, we sadly bid a fond farewell to our arena friends. So when the horror of horrors happens to people we may not know, yet know very well, we feel deeply for these parents, friends, billets, the community of Humboldt, the Province of Saskatchewan, and all Canadians who could not help but acknowledge that accident could have been our team... our children. The pain didn’t end at our borders either. It spread throughout the NHL, and other major sports which had moments of silence for the tragedy. The President and VP of the United States sent their sentiments to our PM, and I even heard there was a tribute in Sweden, Switzerland and other parts of the globe. Closer to home, our survivors and close relatives of the 1960 Lamont school bus/train collision which took 17 childrens’ lives no doubt have felt a special deeply hidden pain rise back up into a sickly feeling now felt by parents, friends and relatives of the Humboldt Brocos. PM Treudeau needs to champion the energy industry in Canada In response to Prime Minister Trudeau’s visit to Fort McMurray, Shannon Stubbs, Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, issued the following statement: “Canada’s Prime Minister needs to champion Canadian energy, which produces the most environmentally and socially responsible oil
and gas in the world, and recognize that the livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of Canadians depend on our energy sector. This important industry benefits every community across the country and provides billions of dollars in revenue for social programs. But just last year Prime Minister Trudeau said that the oil sands
must be “phased out.” “Prime Minister Trudeau is failing Canada’s energy industry and Canadian workers. Since the Liberals took office, more than 110,000 energy workers have lost their jobs and Alberta saw its highest unemployment rate in 20 years. The Prime Minister vetoed the approved Northern
Gateway pipeline and killed the Energy East pipeline with last minute rule changes and a double standard that doesn’t apply to any other sector or to foreign oil imports. Now the Trans Mountain pipeline is at risk because of his total lack of leadership. Continued on Page 5

Letter to the Editor Continued from Page 4 “The reality is that Prime Minister Trudeau has presided over the biggest decline in Canadian energy investment in 70 years – a loss of $80 billion – and his political decisions have thrown roadblock after roadblock in the way of Canadian energy, risking good paying jobs, billions of dollars in investment and new infrastructure, future economic opportunities, and Canada’s leadership position on the world stage. “I sincerely hope that the Prime Minister finally
learns about the incredible innovation, significant advances in environmental stewardship, and the many partnerships with Indigenous communities, like the Mikisew Cree and the Fort McKay First Nations, that have enabled the development of the oil sands, which has long been a major driver of job creation and government revenue, benefitting all of Canada. “Responsible natural resource development is integral to Canada’s prosperity and high standard of living. Energy is the number one private sector investor in the Canadian economy, and it’s Canada’s second biggest export. But by allowing western oil and gas to remain land locked, Prime Minister Trudeau is putting Canada at a serious competitive disadvantage. “The Prime Minister needs to listen to Suncor
Energy Inc. president and CEO Steve Williams who recently said that “the cumulative impact of regulation and higher taxation than other jurisdictions is making Canada a more difficult jurisdiction to allocate capital in.” The Prime Minister should be alarmed that Suncor, Canada’s leading integrated oil and gas company and a pioneer in the oil sands, is warning about the major consequences of the Liberals’ taxes hikes and new regulatory burdens. “As a proud Albertan, I want our province to be a hub for job creation, for investment, and for ingenuity, for the benefit of all of Canada. But that takes real leadership. Canadians can count on Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives to keep fighting for resource development, and for the jobs and opportunities it creates.”

Lamont Midget Hawks win bronze SUBMITTED BY DENIS VAN BRABANT In a series of best out of three against Drayton Valley the Lamont Hawks Midget hockey team won bronze. In game one the two teams traded goals to a two all tie and the game had to be settled in overtime. Austin Kardash scored at 2:45 of the first overtime period to give Lamont the victory. Game two in Drayton Valley, saw Lamont off to a quick start going up 3-0 but ultimately they couldn't hold the lead and fell 5-4 tying the series at one apiece.
Game three back in Lamont was action packed from start to finish. Connor Kardash opened the scoring at 12:40 on assists from Kalem Struemer and
Deitrich Derkson. Drayton Valley followed 11 seconds later with a goal of their own to tie. Before the period was out Max Farrell scored two unassisted goals to
put Lamont up by two after one period of play. Ethan Zago scored for the Hawks 2:30 into the second period on an assist from Seth Williams to put Lamont up by 3.
The game looked to be in hand but once again Drayton Valley fought back and scored four straight goals to go up by one with 9:31 left in the third. With only 1:55 left in the game Austin Kardash scored, tying the game and forcing overtime for the second time in the series. At 2:21 of overtime period Lamont took a 2 minute penalty for slash-
ing. Down a player with only 1:30 left in overtime Max Farell took a long pass from Dietrich Derkson. He broke in past the Drayton Valley defender, deked the goalie and scored his hat trick goal for the game and series win. Other assist on the game winning goal went to goaltender Connor Foulds. Congratulations Lamont Hawks!!

Painting: The Taking of Vimy Ridge by Richard Jack.
Vimy Ridge Day celebrated from The Great War MAUREEN SULLIVAN Monday April 9th was the 101 anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge and the Canadian flag on the Peace Tower of Parliament Hill in Ottawa was lowered to half mast. Vimy Ridge Day is a day to commemorate the deaths and casualties of members of the Canadian Corps during the First World War at the Battle of Vimy Ridge during World War 1. The Battle of Vimy Ridge was part of the larger battle of Arras in Northern France which began on Easter Monday April 9, 1917. About
30,000 Canadians fought in the battle and claimed victory. However this was at a high cost with Canadians suffering about 11,000 casualties with nearly 3,000 killed. At Vimy regiments from coast to coast saw action together in a distinctly Canadian triumph, helping to create
a new and stronger sense of Canadian identity. No longer were they fighting as British soldiers. After Vimy the Canadian's never looked back and it's success raised Canada's international stature and earned it a separate signature on the Treaty of Versailles that ended WW1.

Good crowd at Beaverhill Pioneer Lodge open house in Lamont MAUREEN SULLIVAN On Wednesday, April 4, the new Beaverhill Pioneer Lodge had an open house for the community to come in and see the new building. The official open house will be when the provincial governments’ timetable allows for the Minister of Seniors and Housing to be free. The new senior's lodge has 55 rooms with 4 double rooms for couples. There is currently 15 rooms available. Current tenants moved in from the old lodge just after Christmas. The new building is three and a half times the footprint, with higher ceilings, wider halls and more win-
dows. There are large rooms with lots of storage, space for a kitchenette and accessible bathrooms. It's a state of the art building with all kinds of new equipment," says Harold James, the Chief Administration Officer. "We have had some growing pains as we start up, a few adjustments that we need to make but Lamont should be proud of what we have built here." The new lodge was built on land that was being used by the New Horizon's Senior Centre. Part of the new build was incorporating the Seniors' Centre into the building. As you come in the front door you see immediately to the left a floor curling area, and there

is also a seating area. "It is one of the better things that happened here," says Mr. James. "It is a good model for other facilities." He wished that a daycare could have been built into the facility as well but stated that FCSS mom and tot's group have been in the facility as well as some school programs. Mayor Bill Skinner was quite pleased with the turnout and said there was a lot of interest from the community about taking up residence when the weather warmed up. He also pointed out that the partnership between the New Horizon seniors and the lodge residents was extremely productive. "We have strived to make the building warm and welcoming for its residents," said the Mayor, "after all it's their home." The lodge is an independent living facility, it provides three meals a day plus two snacks on a five week rotating schedule. There is 24 hour staffing and services by homecare that includes medication administration. All rooms are partially furnished with a bed and nightstand, with all bedding and linen provided and are wheelchair accessible. There are personal laundry facilities and a hairdresser on site once a week as well as recreation programs such as bingo and cards and crafts. Cost of accommodation and meals is $1,500 a month with a small extra charge for the use of laundry, microwave and fridge in the room and satellite service.

Breakfast is served at Bruderheim A large crowd gathered at the Bruderheim Seniors Centre on April 7 to enjoy the monthly pancake breakfast. Organizers reported about 75 people from as far as Sherwood Park and Winterburn came out to enjoy the meal. Bruderheim’s Lorne Miller (left) showed his skills flipping the pancakes in the kitchen, while Pat MacEachern served a meal to St. Michael resident Janet Willick.
Volunteers get appreciation dinners across the Lamont County JOHN MATHER Lamont County prepares to salute its volunteers next week as appreciation dinners are held at various locations across the area. The appreciation dinners have been going on for at least six years, according to FCSS Lamont County chairman Jodie Conley. “Andrew’s dinner came on last year and this year the Town of Lamont is having an appreciation dinner for the first time. In Mundare, the dinner will be held April 18 beginning at 6 p.m. at the Mundare Recreation Centre. Lamont and Andrew will hold their dinners for volunteers on April 19 with the Andrew dinner starting at 5:00 p.m. at the Andrew Lions Den. It is being held in conjunction with the local Lions Club. In Lamont, the meal starts at 6:00 p.m. at
the Lamont Hall. The Bruderheim dinner will be held at the Bruderheim Community Hall starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are free for any of the dinners, but Conley said they must be picked by Friday, April 13. Across Lamont County, Conley said there are several hundred volunteers attending each event. “These are people who put their time in to make the community a better place,” she states. Volunteers bridge many fields She adds, that can include the firefighters, people working on Communities in Bloom, minor sports coaches, library board members, school board members – anything where people give their time to help out. “When you volunteer you never go in wanting
accolades or appreciation,” said Conley. “You just want to make the world a little better place.” She said the dinners are open to everybody who has volunteered any time. “We don’t know if everybody comes out, but we spread the word far and wide that we are hosting these events.” She added tickets are available at the municipal offices in each of the communities where a dinner is being held. Conley was just reelected as the chair of the FCSS board. Originally elected to serve as the Mundare representative on the board, she has held the chairman’s position for the past three years. Conley said there are no volunteers of the year. “Essentially it’s hard to pick and choose a volunteer of the year because all out volun-

And the answer is basically wait a while longer. “We’re hoping to have golfers on the course by early May,” said Whitetail Crossing managing partner Laurent LeBlanc. “That’s not a lot far off last year. As long as we don’t get more snow, and the temperatures warm up.” LeBlanc said golfers will notice some changes in drainage aroind the course for 2108. He adds the club hopes to build a kitchen on site this year to enhance its catering opportunities. Fees will stay the same with two for $79 T u e s d a y s , and Thursday golfers will get a free golf cart with their green fees. LeBlanc adds golfers must go online to get
coupons for these deals. Currently, with carts, the weekday costs is $60 for 18 holes, and that increase to $72 on weekends. Twilight rates are $48 during the week with cart and the weekend twilight fee is $58 with cart. Whitetail’s tournament seasons kicks off with the Edward Stawnichy golf tournament June 1 followed by the Ironman tournament on June 2, a 27-hole tournament in Ryder Cup format for two-man teams. With many other tournaments scheduled during the season, two of the highlights will be the Ladies Northern Alberta Senior Amateur Tour event, July 16 and the Northern Alberta Senior Amateur two weeks later on July 30. LeBlanc added one of the new events he wants to try this year is a local fundraising event for any golf group.

was a great Canadian course architect in the 1930s,” adds Pewerchuk. “So we don’t make major changes to the design of the layout. We just perform regular maintenance.” He said the clubhouse will offer a 10-round pass card. This package allows golfers ten green fees for the price of nine. The national park still charges an entrance fee to get to the golf course, but Pewarchuk explains if a golfer buys the 10pack pass then an entrance pass to Elk Island National Park is included. He said the course doesn’t have a regular men’s or ladies league but he would be willing to talk to anyone who may want to organize one. The course does have fundraising tournaments including a “Friends of Elk Island Park” tournament in the fall. He adds it’s home to many corporate tournaments during

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column, and box. Each number can only appear once in each row, column, and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
