Spring 2018

We agree with this face on the 167th consecutive day of overnight temperatures below freezing. Where is spring?, said a Tweet from Elk Island National Park on April 13. Terrible weather continues to baffle everyone in Alberta in 2018.

New businesses to be opening in Mundare MAUREEN SULLIVAN On April 18, Elsie Jahn and her partner Kellie Mast will be opening a

Elsie Jahn

new coffee house which will double as a home decor consignment shop in Mundare called Babba’s Attic and Coffee House. It has a warm atmosphere and just asks you to sit down and spend a little time. Elsie says "there are so many people who are sad and lonely, so if I can find a way to get them together, I want to."

She knows this because she was sitting at home after her husband passed, just watching TV. Then her children asked her to start downsizing her belongings from the two houses she owned. So Elsie at 73 years young started a monthly consignment day at a local business. She did so well that she decided to put her two loves - the consignment store and a coffee house together. She has big plans for

the coffee house like, "pie day fridays", an assortment of muffins, scones, cookies and bars. She also hopes to have open mike days and host small gatherings. Her grand opening will be on May 5th with many great and fun plans. The doors will be open Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8am to 5 pm starting April 18 to get her up and running for the grand opening.

Jaegger and Dawson Glowatski are opening a new business in Mundare, Jaegger’s Old School Auto & RV with a BBQ on April 28. They will be selling new and used RV parts for every style of RV. Jaegger originally opened the business so that he had a legal name to buy and sell cars. Now he and his brother are excited to get into the RV market.

Opinion Carbon Tax refund please Canadians should insist on a Carbon Tax refund due to the fact that we as a country are absorbing much more carbon than we are emitting - in fact many times more. Despite facts showing this, environmentalists and the government are trying to polution-shame us into taking resposibility for the world’s industrial C02 emissions. Why? Canada emits only 1.6 percent of the world’s carbon (601.2 million of 36 trillion tonnes world-wide), however because of Canada’s land mass (which includes 857 million acres of forests, 370 million acres of wetlands and 167 million acres of crop-yielding farmland), Canada absorbs many times the amount it emits. Scientists tell us that trees absorb 2.6 tonnes of carbon per acre, and with Canada having 857 million acres of forest it would mean that our forests alone absorb 2.22 billion tones of carbon - that’s almost four times our 601.2 million tones of emissions. Now consider that we have 537 million acres of carbon absorbing wetlands and farmland, and it puts us into a situation of being greener than green. Canada is one of the world’s greatest “carbon sinks.” Even the United States, according to a Columbia University study, absorbs more than its 15 percent of world C02 emissions. As air mass travels from west to east, the study predicted the east should have higher carbon levels than the west coast of the USA. However, results found that wasn’t the case at all. With the west coast levels higher, the results clearly state that US ecosystems are absorbing more C02 than the country is emitting. Americans emit virtually the exact same amount of carbon per capita as Canadians and have more land mass (minus lakes). So if the USA is carbon negative, it would mean Canada would be the same x10. Canada has less than a half of one percent of the world’s population, watching over 30 percent of the world’s boreal forest. This is not to say that Canadians don’t need to be environmentally responsible. We do. We are. In fact we’re more responsible than any country in the world. But we still need to feed our people and we do it with some of the world’s greatest and most advanced industries - each one heavily regulated to enhance our green responsibilities. So if we are so environmentally responsible and many times carbon negative along the way, why are environmentalists and government polution-shaming us all? Simple. I submit the possibility that their jobs rely on donations and taxes, respectively. It’s fair to question their motives. Kerry Anderson

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Pipeline ideas offered for the Premier To the Alberta Minister of Energy Dear Margie: There are of course several things you can do individually if you feel the need for Her Majesty’s Department of Energy to buy out the Kinder Morgan stake, or at least buy a percentage of it. You can also do a combination of these things: - You can ask the Hon. Joe Ceci, B. SW., M. SW., MLA, Minister of Finance & President of the Treasury Board, New Democratic, Calgary-Fort to apportion say $7-12 billion of the Heritage Savings Trust Fund for “rainy day” emergencies. As this is

clearly an emergency. - You can head together with Joe & your other caucus colleague, the Hon. Rachel Notley, B. A., LL. B., Premier & Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, New Democratic, Edmonton-Strathcona to New York City, New York, the US of A to try & gather up revenue to buy up junk bonds with money & other assets. Which might have seemed bad but Premier Don Getty’s initiative on this file 30 plus years ago did keep us from cratering completely. - You can issue Alberta Bonds for say 3-5% but specify that the profits/dividends from these said bonds are only

to be paid out once the Transmountain Pipeline turns over a profit & that anyone cashing out before the term of the said bonds ends will lose out on all but simple interest like a bank/financial institution. - I despite being on a medical pension would personally hand over a $100 cheque to Rachel & Rachel alone, for the use of Her Majesty’s Government towards buying into the pipeline. I am sure that many other Albertans would join me. Thus putting a few million in the Premier’s pipeline war chest. Continued on Page 5

LAMONT COUNTY MEETING

By-law officer moving on after five years BY JOHN MATHER By-law officer moves on after five years After being the Lamont by-law officer for the past five years, Steve Crosby is moving on. “I’ll be taking on a new position as by-law officer for the County of Thorhild,” he said Crosby’s last day is April 26. “I was a policeman for 25 years with Edmonton Police Service,” he said. “For me to go from the offences I dealt with in the city, to going with cattle on the road or more recently the dead sheep in a ditch … I never thought I’d deal with dead sheep.” “I have nothing but good things to say about the County,” he said. “They gave me lots of latitude to run the department the way I wanted to and I hope K met their expectations.” “It was a lot of fun, but sometimes you have to move on.” Minor changes to purchasing policy Lamont County council has moved to cut the amounts of money administration can authorize for the purchase of goods and services without Council’s authorization. The previous purchasing policy allowed administration to make purchases of $25,001 to $75,000 by department directors, the County manager or as delegated by the County Manager and approved in the current budget year. Purchases exceeding $75,001 could be made by the County Manager or as delegated by the County Manager, but a council motion of approval was required. Under the new purchasing policy assued April 10, the County Manager or his designate can make any purchases of $25,001 and up, but a

council motion is required. Council further voted that any unbudgeted equipment repairs and scope changes exceeding $15,000 would require a council motion. “I think this a fairly tight policy,” said Debbie Hackman, County director of Corporate Services. Council agreed and decided if changes were warranted the policy could come back to council. Emergency generator purchased The County of Lamont has jumped at the opportunity to acquire an emergency generator from the Lamont Housing Foundation. Regional Fire Chief David Zayonce reported to council April 10, the unit was acquired for $5,000 and it could be removed for $1,000 to $1,500. The generator was in the decommissioned Beaverhill Lodge. The county will use the unit at the administration building in the event of any power outages. Zayonce told council it was a good unit, which, “has been very well taken care of.” Standby salary rate adjusted County council moved to adjust the rate for staff on standby from $49 per day to $64.98. Corporate Service director Debbie Hackman told council the rate hadn’t been adjusted for the Cost of Living since 2007. The rate is for staff who are on standby for call out during statutory holiday and weekends. Council was surprised a COLA (Cost of Living) rate hadn’t ever been included in this rate since it is adjusted in all other salaries, including their own. A motion was made to pass the new rate of $64.

98 and it will be annually reviewed and adjusted for the COLA. Council to aid rural crime watch Councillor Roy Anaka reported to council the Andrew Willington Rural Crime Watch was looking for assistance to help offset printing and mailing costs. “I talked to Al Ropchan, vice president of the rural crime watch, and they get many supplies donated from the County of Two Hills,” he told council. Ropchan, in a letter to council, reported the organization had 225 members and the majority were from Lamont County. Deputy Reeve Daniel Warawa asked whether the County had a member sitting on the board. Councillor David Diduck told council he sat on their board but didn’t represent council. “With the level of rural crime happening right now, people have some issues, and we should help them out,” said Warawa. Council moved to provide a grant for $500. Speed limit questioned Councillor Neil Woitas wondered why Range Road 202 had had its speed limited cut to 70 kph instead of being 80 kph like the majority of county roads. County manager Robyn Singleton said he had asked public works why and not received an answer. “I haven’t be able to find any rationale for it yet,” he said. “It may have to do with the railroads nearby.” But he said he didn’t want to compromise safety so he would get a reason for it before suggesting any changes. Administration will report back to council at their next meeting.

Bruderheim to join Sherwood Park Chamber, better float needed Bruderheim to join Sherwood Park Chamber Bruderheim is doing some thinking outside the box by joining the Sherwood Park Chamber of Commerce. “Our town is always looking to find ways to help our business community by reaching out to different organizations. We don’t have a lock on knowing everything,” said Bruderheim mayor Karl Hauch. “The Sherwood Park Chamber of Commerce is a large organization and allows us access to a lot of great opportunities we wouldn’t have.” He pointed out that it allows Bruderheim to advertise on a large electronic sign on Wye Road that is seen by 40,000 people daily. “That’s just one small example. There are lots of successful businesses that we can network with so we can learn and help out our community.” Hauch said he would

look at going into the Chamber’s trade show in future years because the exposure Bruderheim could get from it would be “well worth the effort.” Hauch added the town supports the Lamont District Chamber of Commerce and the Fort Saskatchewan Chamber of Commerce. As he explained the proposal to council on March 21, he reported there was money in the budget for joining the organization. Councillor George Campbell wondered if the Sherwood Park Chamber was open to non-profit groups and Hauch replied they would have to join the Chamber themselves. Councillor Len Falardeau was concerned because he wants Bruderheim to support local area chambers. “I feel we should focus on our own area not that larger area,” he said Hauch explained he felt small communities

like Bruderheim have to be able to reach out beyond its boundaries to work to improve the community. A vote to join the Sherwood Park chamber for $200 was passed. Beekeeping has Bruderheim abuzz Some Bruderheim residents are interested in getting into urban beekeeping but a delegation from the Edmonton District Beekeeper Association failed to show up at the April 4 council meeting to explain the benefits. “We’ve been hearing interest from some residents,” said Mayor Karl Hauch. “Our administration has been doing some research and we’ve been studying policies from other jurisdictions to see what they do.” He added the beekeepers association would be invited back to provide council with an update explaining the benefits of urban beekeeping. Town float to be updated

Bruderheim administration has been charged with coming up with a game plan to develop a better Bruderheim town float. The float would be used to showcase the town and council in various parades in neighbouring communities throughout the year. “I think it’s important that our town to have a presence in the region,” said Mayor Karl Hauch. “And we should have something better than a pick up truck with magnets on it.” He said he and deputy mayor Pat Lee will be meeting with administration to follow up on how to create a better float.

Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch signing a Bruderheim Bruins Jersey to send to the Humboldt Broncos from one small hockey town to another. People are invited to stop by the Bruderheim Town office to sign the jersey in support of Humboldt.

FROM WHERE I SIT Unacceptable

By Hazel Anaka If you’ve never had a backache, congratulations! You’re definitely in the minority and should probably buy a lottery ticket to celebrate. Some quick Internet research confirmed what I suspected even though there’s no agreement on exactly how prevalent lower back pain is any particular country or population age group. I've seen numbers ranging from a 60 to 85 percent incidence of lower back pain in adults over

their lifetime. Some old stats estimate that in the United States approximately 149 million workdays are lost every year at a cost of between 100 to 200 billion dollars in lost wages and productivity. In 2010 low back pain was ranked the third most burdensome condition in the US. And of course, as most of us know, the lower or lumbar part of the back isn’t the only area that can hurt. But because I’ve been struggling with lumbar back pain for months now, that’ll be my focus. By the way, the condition is deemed chronic if it lasts twelve weeks or longer after the initial treatment. Owie. I’ve tried all the usual treatments: ice in the acute phase, then heating pads, massage treatments, chiropractic,

acupuncture and cupping, physiotherapy, topical Diclophenac, core strengthening exercises, yoga stretches, upping my step count on the treadmill. Even the back healing affirmations from metaphysical teacher Louise Hay. Missing from the list are NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen because I have mixed feelings about medication. I don’t want to be a fool and try to tough it out because pain management is an important part of healing but I also fear just masking the pain or suffering side effects. We also replaced our traditional mattress and box spring with a new electric frame/natural latex mattress combo. Becoming aware of my

posture especially as I work at my desk has been an eye-opener. It takes real awareness and effort to correct what has become a bad habit. I can’t do my ball chair for long. I try to keep my feet flat on the floor and not lean one way or the other when I’m on the phone or reading files. I’ve got a riser for my laptop, a separate wireless keyboard, and have the document size enlarged to avoid eyestrain and unnecessary leaning in. And despite all that, the pain persists when I stand, sit, lie down. It’s interfering with my quality of life and ticking me off. The potential causes of low back pain are too many to list here. But most of us are carrying too much weight, leading a largely sedentary

of our chests which has to affect the rest of the spine and surrounding muscles. I’m determined to get rid of or minimize this ache through behavioural and lifestyle changes. Frankly living like this is unacceptable from where I sit.

life, and don’t have the necessary core strength. The health care providers I talk to say the use of cell phones, computers, and even reading are leading to an epidemic of upper back and neck pain caused by a rolling forward of our shoulders and a closing

While part of the project, the Town of Lamont, which received a letter informing them of the grant at the April 10 council meeting, isn’t sure what their role will be. “Bruderheim formed a committee with us and other communities about a year ago,” said Deputy Chief Administrator of Lamont Dawn Neilsen. “We had an initial meeting, but not much since then so I can’t say direction this project will take.” She did add a lot of data on climate change in the area has been recorded and is sure that will come into play as the project moves forward.

Area communities receive grant to create a climate plan JOHN MATHER Bruderheim has been awarded a $32,000 grant to support its development of a regional climate change adaptation plan project. “We have goals in our strategic plan and one of them is with the environment,” said Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch. “I don’t have the specifics of the plan yet, but I’m excited we can partner with other municipalities to work on something that will benefit all our area residents.” “There’s a good number of us working on this and it’s an important opportunity to work together on these important issues.” While Bruderheim takes the lead on this project, it will also involve the towns of Lamont and Gibbons. According to Bruderheim Chief Administrator Patty Podoborozny the town was able to conduct a climate resilience workshop more than a year ago and worked with other area communities to study gaps in preparedness in the event of climate related emergencies such as fires, flood,

Two new businesses to Bruderheim BIBC Bruderheim’s Infinity Business Centre (BIBC) has recently welcomed two new business partners, Spectre Systems and Vibrant Solar Solutions, to town. The two businesses have set up offices at the Centre, which opened in January of 2018 and offers office and meeting space, busi-

ness support and training. “The BIBC and incubator project is an inspiring venture for the Town,” says Bruderheim Mayor, Karl Hauch. “The business community is critical to our Town, and we want to do everything we can to support our businesses and offer

Kevin Cardinal from Vibrant Solar Solutions.

opportunities for innovation and expansion.” Spectre Systems, in business since 2015, is a paving company from Mundare that specializes in road building, particularly asphalt paving, parking lots, municipal streets, road repairs and trail paving. “We chose to come to the BIBC because we wanted to be in a central location to the municipalities we are serving,” says Ed Shepel, Director of Spectre Systems. “It’s important to us to become a part of the community.” The solar equipment sales and installation company, Vibrant Solar Solutions, also in business since 2015, provides

LED lighting and general electrical services for residential and commercial clients. “We started the business because we want to help people and businesses become more sustainable through energy conservation,” says Kevin Cardinal, President of Vibrant Solar Solutions, who has been in the electrical business for nearly 25 years. “We want to ensure a healthy future for our planet and our communities.” “Having these businesses set up shop in Bruderheim is a big step forward,” adds Mayor Hauch. “We’re excited to support them and watch them grow.”

Large gathering expected at St. Michael to discuss the ongoing problem of rural crime JOHN MATHER Open house to address rural crime issues Federal, provincial and municipal politicians will gather at St. Michael Recreation Centre April 26 at 7 p.m. to discuss the ongoing problem of rural crime in the area. “We’ll be starting the meeting with a discussion by Lloyd Kennedy of LegalShield on identity theft,” said Al Ropchan, the vice president of the Andrew Willington St. Michael Rural Crime Watch Association. “This is one of the biggest problems out there right now.” He said stats show one of eight people in Canada has been victimized by identity theft. He said there are many ways thieves can retrieve your identity without you knowing. One of the common ones, he explained, was when a person uses a commercial photocopier. “Anything you photocopy, including your personal documents, the copier hard drive retains that information in its memory. If it’s not wiped out it’s still there when the copier is thrown out.” “We want to advise members and potential members of things happening out in our area,” he said. “We know rural crime has taken a sharp increase over the past couple of years.” He added the meeting will include a presentation by Citizens on Patrol. “These folks drive around looking for suspicious activity,” he explained. “They have to be trained, have a criminal record check done, and be approved by the RCMP. They travel around the area and report back to RCMP.” The program will conclude with a panel discussion featuring a representative from Lakeland MP Shannon

Stubbs’s office, Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood, County of Two Hills and Lamont councillors and the Two Hills RCMP. “Our rural crime watch association takes in both Counties, so people will be there to tell us what’s happening.” He added the provincial government has announced they will be

hiring more RCMP personnel to help combat the rural crime issue. “People are asking when is this going to happen and how many more officers will come to our area,” he said. “This is what we want to hear about.” Facebook used as vital communication tool Ropchan added the rural crime watch has

developed a Facebook page where members can issue alerts throughout the area when they see strange vehicles acting in suspicious manners in the rural areas. “People will post on the site if they see something going on in their area. The RCMP has bought in that we have that page, and they monitor it.

JERSEYS FOR HUMBOLDT Andrew students wore their jerseys, team hoods and t-shirts to show their support to the families and community of the Humboldt Broncos. Some of the high school students wanted to help show support by starting a school donation and a parcel for students/families to send messages and cards to the families. Students made cards and wrote special messages to the families. They raised $307 and donated it to GoFundMe.

“Most rural crime watch associations have Facebook pages. Crooks move around and Facebook has been very successful for us.” He added licence plate theft is pretty common the rural areas. “I think that’s happening everywhere. They aren’t stealing the vehicle - they just take the plate to commit a crime. When someone reports

that plate number it comes back to the rural homeowner.” He states it’s just another form of identity theft. Ropchan also sits on the provincial rural crime watch association board and he reports this sort of crime isn’t isolated to Lamont County, but is something going on province wide.
