Sharun family lights up the night sky and hearts of friends and neighbours during light up celebration Michelle Pinon Editor

For Mundare area resident Brian Sharun this is the most wonderful time of year. To celebrate, Brian, his wife Shawna, and 16-yearold daughter Cheyyne, invited as many family members, friends, and neighbours to their annual Christmas Light Up celebration on Dec. 5th. More than 150 people came to see Brian’s metal and rope light creations be brought to life with a flick of a switch shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday evening. Even Santa Claus made an appearance to the delight of all the children, who got to sit on his knee and share their Christmas wishes with. Brian, who is a member of the local fire department, was also collecting donations for the fire department, and with the generosity of guests helped collect $555 for the worthy cause. “We started the Light Up about 10 years ago,” said Brian. “Actually, it was 11 years ago,” noted Shawna. Normally, there are between 15 and 20 people in attendance, but this year the family invited a larger circle of people, and included co-workers, friends, and acquaintances. The Light Up started with one project, a Christmas wreath, and has grown every year since. Strolling through their large yard, guests looked at a giant sized Nativity Scene, Christmas carolers, Santa and his eight reindeer, Santa going down the chimney, the STARS air ambulance, sleigh ride, giant Christmas tree, choo-choo train, Santa driving a golf cart, Shawna’s favourite – a gingerbread house, and daughter Cheyyne’s request of penguins and an igloo. “That’s new this year,” added Brian. Brain has spent countless hours in his shop making the steel frames and fastening rope lights. There have been countless visitors to their yard during the holiday season over the years. Shawna said pictures of the spectacular Christmas creations have been sent all over the world, including South Africa and the Ukraine. He buys the rope lights in 150 foot rolls. “I get them wholesale from an outfit in BC, so I get a good deal.” For Brian, there is always a “work in progress”; and he is thrilled to be able to share his joy and passion with others. With the latest celebration having just wrapped up, there will no doubt be many more visitors to their property which is located just off of Highway 16 on Range Road 170.

Lamont family joins Eskimos Grey Cup rally Michelle Pinon Editor

Unforgettable. That’s what Tuesday, December 1st will always be for one Lamont family who attended the Eskimos Grey Cup homecoming party in Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton. “It was a great day for myself and the kids; a day to remember for many years to come,” said dad Cory Carruthers. “We went downtown as we had the Green ‘n Gold Fever,” said Cory, who pulled his two children, Emily and Aidan, out of school to attend the noon hour celebration. They were among thousands of people in the crowd, but stood out in the crowd after performing a good deed. “They let her, (a lady in a wheelchair), go ahead of them in line. When one of the City of Edmonton councillors saw their act of kindness, he asked if they wanted to go up for pictures with the Cup,” said Cory. Soon after the celebration ended, the kids, who posed with players D’Anthony Batiste and Matthew O’Donnell, were plastered all over local media websites as well as the Eskimos’ website. Everyone was packed shoulder to shoulder, and it was well worth playing hooky for. “It was just going to be a day with dad to celebrate a championship win and it turned into a better day than anyone could have guessed, minus the parking ticket at the Clareview station when I returned 90 minutes later.” Even though the Carruthers clan hasn’t ever attended an Eskimos home game, Cory expects that will change next season. So now, the Edmonton Eskimos have a new legion of fans, and a growing legacy, and momentum to carry them into the 2016 season.

Opinion From Where I Sit: We Can Hope

By Hazel Anaka Despite the lack of snow and the unbelievably mild temperatures the inexorable march toward Christmas is well, marching along. No one I know is unhappy

about winter being shortened by these extra stolen weeks of warmth courtesy of El Nino. While I acknowledge it’s a wee bit harder to get into the spirit, I’m willing to power through it. After all, we don’t need freezing rain, black ice, and minus twenty something temperatures to celebrate Christmas. The dry, perfect roads make shopping for gifts and groceries easier. There goes that excuse for not attending the Christmas concerts and recitals, office parties, hockey tournaments, church services, theatre and choir performances.

For those so inclined, creating the outdoor light extravaganza is easier this year. No drifts to traverse. No frozen fingers. Despite the mild weather we can’t forget our feathered friends. Keeping the bird feeders topped up will help the little guys survive. Heating bills should be lower this season and that’s great because virtually everything else is costing more from food to liquor. That needn’t mean the end of favourite traditional plans but perhaps a scaling back or modification instead. Talking to friends

about their Christmas plans convinces me we all want the same things. We try to make wishes come true for the youngest ones in the family. We connect with everyone else through the sharing of (too much) food and (festive) drinks. Most of us will get talked into playing board games. Stories about the past will be shared with ones who’ve forgotten or never heard them before. Some of them may even be true. Several years ago I started a tradition with my immediate family. It was a stolen idea I’ve since shared with others.

I bought journals for each of the adults. When our little family gathers on Christmas Eve we take turns writing a message in everyone else’s journal. It may be a wish expressed for the coming year. Or an acknowledgement that someone survived a big challenge or tough year. It may be an expression of gratitude for what that person means to us. For some, this is tough. There are the reluctant moaners. Yet who doesn’t love reading messages of love from the people closest to them? The fact they are written down makes them more

precious. Those sentiments will exist as long as the journals do and can be revisited whenever a person wishes. Of course, none of us should wait for a special day or month to share our homes and create memories with family and friends. Or to play family games or say what’s in our hearts. Maybe if we did this more often the ‘performance anxiety’ many of us feel at Christmas would disappear and all our days would be richer for it. Or at least we can hope, from where I sit.

Kudos to Lamont Light Up volunteers Dear Editor, Since I was so quick to condemn Lamont for not doing anything for Canada’s birthday on July 1st, I feel it is only fair to commend Lamont on the fabulous job they did on the Christmas Light Up. I was amazed at the amount of volunteers who gave up so much of their time to make sure this day was enjoyed by all. Everything flowed smoothly and the number of activities available was unbelievable. Well done Lamont. Thank you and kudos to all the volunteers who made this a very memorable and enjoyable occasion. Shell Canada donates $25,000 to Bruderheim School Michelle Pinon Editor

When Wayne Munsterman was looking at the faces of Bruderheim School students on Friday, Dec. 4th, he was hoping there would be a few budding engineers and scientists in the crowd. Munsterman, a technology manager at Shell Scotford, was on hand to present a $25,000 cheque to principal Jeff Huculak. “This money will be used to purchase a class set of Chromebooks and IPADs.” He estimates they will be able to purchase at least 45 devices and two charging carts

with the funds. “This is huge for our school. It will make us pretty much one to one in terms of students to technology ratio,” pointed out Huculak. “It pleases me and makes me proud to donate the money,” stated Munsterman, who later posed with students and staff for a group photo following his brief presentation during the school’s monthly assembly. “I encourage you to find a passion for engineering as I did,” added Munsterman. Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood and Bruderheim town councillors Pat Lee and

Drop in lacrosse program coming to Lamont in 2016 Michelle Pinon Editor

It took only a couple of drop in sessions before Lamont teenagers Daylin Medynski and Evan Shields were hooked on the sport of lacrosse. Now, other local youth will have the chance to try out the sport at Lamont High School early in the new year. In fact, it wasn’t long after Daylin and Evan tried out the sport, that Mike Spears, head coach of the Bantam 2 Rebels team in Fort Saskatchewan had them playing on his squad. Parent Chyenne Shaw said that not just Daylin and Evan played last year, but also David Kostiuk; and Shaw’s daughter, Katelynn, and her friend, Alexa, who played for the Rebels pee wee girls team. “It’s a fast rough sport. But also fun and rewarding,

NEW & IMPROVED:

especially with a coach like Mike Spears and Ernie Smith who coached our peewee girls. I know as a parent here in Lamont, having something other then hockey for the kids would be a benefit.” Daylin always wanted to play goalie, and Shaw said he got his chance last year, and will be playing this season, which starts in March and goes until the end of June. Both Daylin and Evan like the fact lacrosse is fast paced and involves contact. “It’s fun and entertaining, and there’s lots of contact,” stated Daylin. They definitely didn’t mind a few bumps and bruises either. Evan said lacrosse is very fun, a great form of exercise, and he got a chance to meet new people. “I made new friends,” added Daylin. The teens encourage everyone to give the sport a try, and can hardly wait until 2016 begins. air

The night time parade on main street is the grand finale for the annual Christmas Extravaganza celebration on main street in Mundare. Handing out some Christmas treats were members of Mundare town council. From left to right are: Frank Rosypal, Jaime Burghardt, Mayor Charlie Gargus, Irene Talaga, and Lisa Couchman. Christmas baking and traditional Ukrainian fare by members of the Communities In Bloom committee was snapped up quickly. Folks also enjoyed the handcrafted items at the market, sleigh rides, a visit with Santa and festive mice stuffies donated by Charlotte Hrynyk, cookies by members of the Library Board, as well as decorating Christmas ornaments and eating homemade cookies that were supplied by the Servus Credit Union.

Lakeland MP poses initial question Ottawa— Shannon Stubbs, MP, for the Lakeland constituency asked the first question in the first session of the 42nd Parliament, on behalf of the Conservative Official Opposition on Friday, Dec. 4th. Replying to the Speech from the Throne, Stubbs spoke about the outsized contributions made by the people and businesses of Lakeland to all of Canada, and about the challenges facing the energy sector in Alberta. Stubbs asked Liberal MP Remi Masse to explain how hiking taxes and taking more money away from Canadians and businesses will protect jobs? Masse replied, Mr. Speaker, Canadians made a clear choice in October. They chose a leader with a vision, a solid team, and a clear program that is inspiring.
