Respect Vegreville campaign headed to Ottawa Michelle Pinon Editor
Vegreville Mayor Myron Hayduk and members of town council will be meeting Canada’s Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen in Ottawa tomorrow, February 23, to discuss the proposed closure of the Immigration Canadian Processing Centre. The news was confirmed late last week by Communications Coordinator Rachel Farr. Both the town, the union, federal and provincial officials, have been diligently lobbying against the closure of the town’s largest employer since the decision was first announced last October by the Liberal government in Ottawa. “Keep fighting Vegreville. Don’t back down.” Those were the recent words of MP Shannon Stubbs in a video clip from her office in Ottawa that she made just prior to the start of the February 9 town hall meeting to encourage constituents to keep writing letters and making phone calls in opposition of the proposed closure. That town hall meeting had an estimated turn out of 400 people, about the same amount as the first town hall meeting that was held in the community in mid-December. The heat has been on the Liberal’s in the

Vegreville Mayor Myron Hayduk (above) and MP Shannon Stubbs have been fightig for the employees and against the proposed closure of the Immigration Case Processing Centre for months now, along with the union that represents workers as well as community residents, businesses and organizations. House of Commons during recent sessions of Question Period in parliament in the past couple of weeks. MP Stubbs has taken the immigration minister to task several times, stating that his excuses are “nonsense and unfounded.” Conservative Party Leader Rona Ambrose also challenged Hussen during Question Period on February 15, questioning the Liberals’ deliberate attack on rural Canadians. Ambrose’s question was in response to an economic impact assessment the Town of Vegreville commissioned as part of their campaign to stop the closure of the centre. “It will be a devastating blow to the peo-
ple and the future of this small community,” stated Ambrose. “The mayor said: This is exactly the opposite of what the government promised to do for rural Canada in the last election.” Why is the Prime Minister attacking rural Canada?” In response to Ambrose’s question Hussen stated: “We continue to engage the community. In the new location, not only will we be able to expand our immigration services, we will be able to create more jobs for Alberta.” Uprooting of 280 jobs from the community will devastate the community, said the finding of a recently commissioned report by the town con-
firms those negative projections. The report detailed the economic, employment and social impacts the closure would have on the community. According to the report, the closure would remove nine per cent of Vegreville’s workforce, and the loss of $15.9 million of gross domestic product. It would cause a sharp drop in market values of approximately 25-30 per cent, which is on top of the 17 per cent drop in market values which occurred between 2014 and 2016. The unemployment rate is projected to double from eight per cent to nearly 16 per cent. MP Stubbs previously pointed out that the relocation would only amount to the addition of 32 desks to a space in Edmonton that would require millions of dollars in upgrades. She said town officials have offered spaces in Vegreville, along with plans to expand the existing centre, and she said the Vegreville office does not have to be closed in order to hire or offer a different or additional scope of work or services in Edmonton. “Department officials confirmed months ago to union representatives that no consultation, no cost study, and no economic impact assessment were undertaken by the federal government before the announcement of this edict.”
Representatives with the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) have also been advocating against the proposed closure, and have also met with the Immigration Minister and his staff, providing information on the exemplary work that is being done at the centre in Vegreville. “The bottom line is that the department doesn’t need to close the Case Processing Centre in Vegreville in order to expand operations in Edmonton,” stated PSAC Prairies Regional Executive Vice President Marianne Hladun. Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood has also been very vocal, and has pub-

Mundare Fire & Rescue to celebrate 100 years of service Michelle Pinon Editor
Mundare Fire & Rescue will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on Saturday, April 22. The event will be marked with opening ceremonies, dinner and dance at the Mundare
National Hall. Lamont County is helping commemorate the historic occasion by offering financial support in the amount of $3,000 to help offset the
expenses associated with the fire department. Coun. Robert Malica made the motion in support of the event during the Feb. 14 council meeting. The motion passed unanimously, and members of council expressed their support of the fire department and the work its members have done over the last century to serve the community. Lamont County Regional Fire Chief David Zayonce stated in his written recommendation to council that: “This is a monumental accomplishment to achieve such a prolific anniversary of great significance.” In a letter that was sent by Mundare Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Glenda Dales, they will be recognizing past and present members for their
invaluable contributions to the fire service and their community. While the department is hosting the event, it is
unable to totally finance all of the expenditures associated with the celebration. In addition to asking for sponsorship,
the department has applied for a grant to assist with the costs. Anyone interested in attending the event can

Opinion Letter: 24 hour-7 days a week emergency care update Just an update on our progress to reacquire 24 hour emergency care at the Lamont Health Care Centre. Many people are not aware that we do not have 24/7 emergency care here in Lamont. In October of 2015, we presented our local MLA Jessica Littlewood a petition of in excess of 10% of the population of the Lamont County, hoping that with a new government, we would get some interest and cooperation from the NDP. It took us 9 months to receive a letter from Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health to tell us nothing. Within that 9 month period, another advocate for our cause called, emailed and personally attended the office of Jessica Littlewood but not one single respose
from our MLA. Absolutely NOTHING. We replied to Ms Hoffman’s letter on Nov 1, 2016, attempting to challenge her reasons for our Health Care Unit to not have 24 hour emergency and received a reply on January 25, 2017 advising us that we have ground support and STARS and we are only 30 minutes away from Fort Saskatchewan. They are continuing to “pursue strategies” Well Ms Hoffman, first of all you require a doctor to bring in STARS: our ambulance service is great but if Fort Saskatchewan Hospital is full, you are off to Edmonton and that is a lot longer than 30 minutes. Yes, we are fairly close to Fort Saskatchewan for non emergency cases
but consider residents who live in St Michael, Andrew, Chipman and residents who live on farms on the outer edges of the county, they are more like an hour away and a heart attack in the middle of the night could prove to be very fatal. We are totally dependant on Fort Saskatchewan, because there are no emergency services to the East except for Vegreville. What is so appalling is that the annual cost would only be approximately $320,000. That is pocket change based on the AHS budget and that would take care of about 8,000 County voting citizens. This, to me is a no brainer. It is unfortunate that we have to utilize the media to express our concerns and ensure this
government that this will not go away and that it will be a hot topic before the next election. I also want to express my disappointment with our citizens for not following up with emails and letters to this government as we requested in the March 29, 2016 of The Lamont Leader. Seems like no one really cares but when something happens to one of their family members, it will be too late. . Let us see who really cares. We are requesting more volunteers to assist in pursuing this matter. Please call me @ the number below my name. Thanks, Larry Doskoch 780-895-2975
St. Michael poet pens: Burying a Grudge There is someone with whom you have a dispute, And you think that the person is of ill repute
But pride is a powerful force there’s no doubt, You’d rather die with it than live life without.
You have your pride, but it’s come with a cost, Think of the fun and fellowship you have lost.
You speak very harshly to your foe in your mind, But what would happen if your thoughts became kind?
Pride is a real nasty master you know Allowing you access where it wants you to go.
If your conscience is troubling, give it a break. Go mend the rift for your sanity’s sake.
You’d feel the snare loosen its grip on your heart, And just for a moment your grade would depart. But you reach out and grab it, it’s yours to defend, It’s been with you so long, it’s like losing a friend You hold fast to that grudge, though you know it’s a snare, Though deceitful and hurtful, it’s your grudge to bear. You tighten your grasp so your grudge won’t take flight Its warmth is as cold as a winter morn at first light
Life is too short to be on a short leash, To let pride and anger steal from you peace. As you tell the story to the people you know, The dastardly deeds of that person, your foe, The story gets bigger with embellishments added With ad-libs and add-ons the message gets padded So what have you gained, friends dropping from sight, When you unleash anger at each little slight? It’s time to take stock, let go of your grudge, Give it a kick and soon it will budge.
We can’t tell you to drop it, oh no, we don’t dare, To drop it, you say, would be justly unfair
Give it another then give it a shove, Tell it that bitterness can’t replace love.
It is, after all, your own grudge to keep, Even when the burden drives you to weep
A grudge is a curse if you coddle and nurse it Wisedom says slay it and quickly disperse it.
All the wicked deeds that your mind can conjure, Were inflicted by your foe, of that you are sure.
It should see its demise in the dirt where it grew, Bury it deeply and then start life anew.
They will hound you unceasing and give you no rest, They will mock you and taunt you like a troublesome pest.
Will all this strife matter when you are old The joys that you missed stepping out of the fold?
It’s not only you who suffers, you and your foe, There are others who pray that your ire will go.
Perhaps that grudge, you so carefully tended, That you’ve fed and watered, should now be ended.
When you plant your feet in your adversary’s shoes Perhaps revenge is not the path you would choose Try to see his side in the dispute that you savour Might justice, just maybe, prevail in his favour? You’ve nothing to lose and it’s never too late, You know that your heart is much bigger than hate. Don’t ignore the stirring in your heart hard as stone, Your mean gene is softening, love’s calling you home. So take a small step you have nothing to prove Resist the resistance to make the first move A simple “hello, how are you” will suffice Just do the right thing, take a breath and be nice And so you see, there is a solution End the contention and find resolution.
Marilyn Pruss *Author’s note: It is my sincere desire that people will take this message to heart and end the conflict in their lives.

From Where I Sit: Hope that Changes
By Hazel Anaka We live about one hundred kilometres from Edmonton. We could also say Edmontonians live one hundred kilometres from our rural property. Metaphorically the distance is far, far greater I fear. A hundred years ago I attended Grant McEwan College and worked in Edmonton as a CNIB caseworker for blind adults. We lived in a basement apartment suite half a block north of 7th Avenue at 108 Street. Today that stretch is called the Avenue of Nations and is home to Somalia and other immigrants. Before long Roy got the call of the land and we moved to a tiny house in the Village of
Andrew. We farmed part-time as he commuted daily for seven years to a job in Edmonton as a pre-cast concrete draftsman. Over the years we’ve made a few miles between home and Edmonton. I think I’ve done a fine job of knowing Edmonton, following her big stories, understanding her issues, caring about her people, loving her assets. I watch city news, read city papers. I follow her politics. I know the locals are ticked about fire pits, potholes, loud motorcycles. I know they worry about the economy, paying the higher minimum wage, paying property taxes. Frankly I like being in the know. Cuz, it’s my city, cuz it makes me a skilled conversationalist, cuz it creates empathy. But, as I drove a combine last November (!) in what was arguably the worst harvest season in memory, I wondered if those city people know anything about me, us. Does anyone, who isn’t directly involved in farming, understand what is at stake? Does anyone give a damn? As city slickers drive down the provinces’ highways

do they look into the fields? Do they understand what they are seeing? Do they know the difference between a field covered in swaths and one that’s been combined and perhaps cultivated? Can they identify the type of crops standing or lodged or lying in swaths since August? Do they understand the catastrophic financial loss to farm families and everyone they owe money to: lenders; insurers; chemical, fuel, fertilizer, seed sellers; machinery dealers? The canola we combined was not dry, meaning the moisture in the kernels is too high to safely store the grain or sell it. Simply put, if we didn’t dry it, the grain would ‘heat’ and rot. So we filled 100 pound bottles of propane (at a hundred bucks a crack) to run 60,000 or 100,000 BTU heaters twenty-four hours a day for weeks. A bottle lasted about two days. Electricity powers the huge aeration fans. These were additional dollars spent in the hope of getting ten dollars per bushel if and when it’s finally dry enough for a grain company to buy it. The lack of understanding about the life and work and impor-

‘Running Shoes to Cowboy Boots’ ready to set the pace Michelle Pinon Editor
Lamont County has decided to piggyback onto the popular provincial ag-tourism initiative Open Farm Days to create one of its own unique summertime events called: “Running Shoes to Cowboy Boots”. The Agriculture Service Board along with the Economic Development Department are teaming up to bring the two day event to life. Slated for August 19 and 20, “Running Shoes to Cowboy Boots” will feature a bonfire complete with hot dogs, marshmallows and entertainment as well as farm tours, farmers market, bench show, taste testing of local fare and a good old fashioned barn dance. Communications Director Heather Atkinson told council members last Tuesday about the concept and planned activities. “The idea is to bring in an outside audience to get a flavour of rural life.” She explained that people who are interested in participating in the activities can pick and choose what they want to see and do, and the schedule is flexible enough that folks will still have plenty of time to also take a few side trips to the Heartland Ag. Days in Bruderheim or the Agri Days in Mundare during the two day fun-filled extravaganza. The long term plan is
to make “Running Shoes to Cowboy Boots” a county wide event, rotating each year to different communities. “As more ag. societies get involved, the more longevity it will have,” added Atkinson, who has already met with all of the local agricultural societies in the area.
and would look into that option. Jim Newman, Manager of Economic Development, said the main idea is to promote Lamont County to the urban population as well as create awareness and give participants the opportunity to connect with local producers and
organizations. Lindsay Benbow, Assistant Agricultural Fieldman, said there are a lot of negative perceptions about food production, and this event is a good opportunity to demonstrate that local producers are doing just that in a healthy, safe and sustainable way. “I think it’s important to show
people where food comes from and how it is grown.” The county will be receiving partial funding for the event through an agricultural initiatives program, and economic development has set aside $5,000 from its event budget to cover some of the costs associated with hosting the
event. All other funding, noted Atkinson, will come from corporate and private sponsorship. “Our draft budget to date has the event at approximately $27,000; however, we’re still in the very early stages, and it could be cheaper depending on some item prices, so that number is a broad estimate only.”

Lamont County is rolling out a new event this summer in conjunction with Alberta Open Farm Days to encourage urban folks to experience the rural side of life through its “Running Shoes to Cowboy Boots” two day event. Tossing away their runners are Lamont Communications Co-ordinator Heather Atkinson, Economic Development Manager Jim Newman, with Assistant Agricultural Fieldman Lindsay Benbow. Coun. Robert Malica suggested they add a petting zoo to the line up of activities. Atkinson said they were still in the early stages of planning,

the 2016-2017 school year. Your donations are greatly appreciated and have gone a long way in providing healthy breakfast choices for our stu-

Andrew Lions Club activities update SUBMITTED ARTICLE The Andrew Lions Club hosted our 70th Anniversary Charter Night in St. Michael on Jan. 28. Seventy years is an accomplishment and we really appreciated those who celebrated with us. The money that was given to us will be used to purchase a Dr. Patti Hill Fellowship. The money goes to the Royal Alex Hospital for Eye Research. Dr. Patti Hill, our guest speaker, is running for the third Vice Presidency of Lions International. On Wednesday, Feb 15, the Andrew Lions Club was honoured to have 15 members from the Chipman Lions Club attend our supper meeting. It was a fun time. Our Club will be working a casino in Camrose on June 22 & 23. Half of the money raised by the club goes back into the community or to other charities. If anyone has a project that they would like to see happen in our community, you are welcome to present a plan, along with a financial statement, for consideration. Any Grade 12 student planning on attending post secondary education could be eligible for the Lions Legacy Scholarship.
