Summer Sizzles
Lamont Ag. Society hosts fantastic weekend at Conrad Schinkinger Memorial Grounds just south of town KERRY ANDERSON The Lamont Agricultural Society held its always popular Summer Sizzler at the Conrad Schinkinger Memorial Grounds just a km south of town on Highway 831 over the weekend. The Sizzling weekend activities are always highlighted by the top notch rodeo put on by the Ag. Society and it ran Friday and Saturday and was very well attended as usual. But there is always something for everyone, beginning with a Sizzling hot pancake breakfast Saturday morning and also bench shows both Friday and Saturday. Despite the rain Friday night, everyone enjoyed the wonderful weather all weekend with temperatures that were warm and pleasant, not hot and uncomfortable, and guests were able to enjoy one another’s company at the Sizzler Outdoor Beer Gardens all weekend long. Webb’s Sizzling Combine Krunch began on Saturday evening, with the finals taking place on Sunday afternoon followed by the Battle of the Brands truck vs truck pulling competition. Spectators also enjoyed shopping local venders in the Market Place on Saturday. But of course, not to be outdone were the children participating in the Little Sizzler Kids Rodeo on Sunday. Parents, family, friends and many other fans watched the little tikes participate in the cutest events of the whole weekend. Overall, the Ag. Society did it again. The 2016 Summer Sizzler was just excellent from beginning to end. See our centre pages for all the fun and excitement over the Sizzler weekend.

Weather damage for some, excellent crops for many in Lamont County KERRY ANDERSON The crops will be good if we can get them off, says Lamont County Agricultural Fieldman Terry Eleniak. “We’ve had our share of set-backs though,” he added. “In pockets we’ve had hail, wind and extensive rain. So there have been setbacks in some areas and the crops look fabulous and lush in other places.” Eleniak made note of the extremes producers have incurred in the past two growing seasons, going from last year’s drought to this year’s mixed up weather conditions. “One example is a farmer on 195 near Elk Island Park. He had a downpour that was damaging, and then a couple of miles off the dust was flying.”
Then there were incidents of hail damage, but again only in certain pockets. On the Father’s Day weekend there was extensive hail damage to a five or six mile strip from Waskatnau through the St. Michael area. Also isolated areas
near Andrew, Chipman and other small areas of Lamont County. Cattle producers have been struggling to get off their hay. “It’s been difficult to get grain and there have been setbacks on the cattle side as well,” said the

Agriculture Fieldman. Eleniak said this growing season was looking very good for everyone “but the tap just never turned off. “Overall these crops are looking nice, with average to above average yields.”

Opinion Parental choices What do you really know about other people? You can assume they are like you; hard working, family oriented, law abiding citizens of society. You can assume that, and most of the time you'd be right. But not always. The recent amber alert search in Calgary for five-year old Taliyah Marsman resulted in a heartbreaking discovery of her dead body, only days after her mother had been found murdered in her basement suite. Of course the hope and help of all Albertans went into spreading the word of Taliyah's disappearance and the desperate attempt to locate her; hoping for the best, but fearing the worst. Often you are, or you become, who you associate with. A young person who wants to be successful will no doubt increase his or her chances greatly but rubbing shoulders with other successful people. But the opposite is also true. Word has come down that the man arrested and charged with murdering both Taliyah and her mother Sara Baillie has an extensive criminal record as well as strong associations with a gang called North Preston's Finest, AKA the Willis Crew. Both Taliyah's father and her mother's most current boyfriend also apparently may share this gang connection. The accused murderer in this case, had been previously arrested for illegal possession of a firearm, cocaine trafficking, and pimping charges. The gang has a history of recruiting girls and forcing them into prostitution in various cities across Canada. There is presently no knowledge that Sara Baillie had anything to do with this gang or any of the crimes its members perpetrated. However, it is known that her accused killer, and boyfriend was associated to this gang and was well-known to her. Unfortunately children have very little choice about the people with which their parents associate, and innocent little Taliyah's young spent life is the most tragic victim of this reality. "Our hearts are broken at the tragic end of the search for little Taliyah. I know everyone prayed that she be found and returned to her family, to grow up as happy as she appears in the photographs provided through the media," said Premier Notley. "Our hearts are all broken," said Calgary Mayor Nenshi. Both adults and children continued to stop by the home of Sara and Taliyah in Calgary long after the murders, dropping off flowers and stuffed animals as a sad memorial to this horrible tragedy. Parental life choices affect our children. Kerry Anderson

Liberals veto national pharmacare as more Canadians can’t fill their prescriptions Council of Canadians, April 14, 2016: “Yesterday was the first meeting of the Commons Standing Committee on Health to study how Canada might create a national pharmacare program. First recommended in a the1964 Royal Commission on Health Services, Canada remains, “the only country in the world with a medicare system that excludes prescription drugs as if they are not part of the healthcare system.” Roughly 52 years later, after 11 liberal governments and 6 Conservative governments, Canadians remain with a fragmented system with inequitable drug coverage. As it stands 10 per cent of Canadians have no practical form of ongoing coverage and it is has been revealed that as drug prices continue their meteoric rise approximately 1 in 5 Canadians (previous data had shown 1 in 10), “say that they themselves or someone in their household resorted to saving money this past year by not buying drugs ordered by a doctor or by skimping on doses. That’s a prescription for ill health.” At the same time more than 90 per cent of Canadians support the concept of pharmacare and health economists have shown through studies that, “Canada-wide savings from national pharmacare at between $4 billion and $11 billion per year, depending on how the program is structured.” Reliable research has shown that on a total cost of $27 billion paid for drugs, we pay up to $11 billion more than
we would with a national plan. Meanwhile both provincial plans and private insurance plans are struggling under the high prices and cutting back coverage. If done correctly national, comprehensive universal pharmacare coverage is a no-brainer, and the Council of Canadians has joined 300 health professionals and academics in a letter urging the government to support universal pharmacare. It came as a major disappointment this week that Canada’s Health Minister, Jane Philpott, indicated pharmacare is not part of her mandate. It has been reported that the minister believes pharmacare is too costly and she has highlighted it will not be introduced in this Parliament. Further Philpott stated,, “It sounds like it might be expensive and that’s one of the reasons we’re not in the position where we’re about to implement pharmacare,..” I had a gut feeling last federal election (2015) that the Justin Trudeau Liberals, like the Harper Conservative predecessors, would opposed a NATIONAL PHARMACARE PROGRAM! This is one of many reasons why I voted NDP! It is a shame that Canada is the only industrialized country on earth that does not include Pharmacare as a essential part of our overall Public Medicare System! The Federal New Democrats support a universally, accessible Pharmacare program for all Canadians! Edward Sawdon St. John’s, NL

Let’s play the Name Game across Lamont County KERRY ANDERSON Sometimes people in Lamont, Alberta get mail or calls intended for Lamont, Iowa; which is actually a smaller municipality. At times the Lamont Leader is confused with Iowa’s Lamont Leader, and people have even called our office in Alberta intending to place an ad or pass on news intended for the Iowa newspaper. It’s always confusing until the connection is made. But Lamont isn’t the only such town. The Hamlet of Hilliard, once a bustling community with a lumber yard and steel foundry on Highway 15 just west of Mundare has a small US city with a matching name. Hilliard, Ohio is a city of just over 30,000 in the
centre of the state. Hilliard, Alberta is now a hamlet with just a handful of houses and businesses. It was named after the first station agent, Frank Hilliard. Hilliard, Ohio was named after John Reed Hilliard, a farmer who bought 10 acres in the area originally. The Hamlet of Star in Lamont County, just north of the Town of Lamont, may not have many residents but it also has a city it shares its name with. Star, Idaho has just over 6,000 residents located on the south west corner of the state. The name came from the star on the town’s schoolhouse in the 19th century, which travellers used to find east and west. Lamont County has the Hamlet of
St. Michael, but Quebec has the Municipalite de Saint-Michel, a town with a population of roughly 3,000 on the south west corner of the province. The Hamlet of Wostok was named after the direction “east” borrowed from the Russian language, and although there appears to be a beverage with that name, there seems to be no municipality sharing the name. Lamont County’s second largest town, Bruderheim, also doesn’t seem to share its name with any place else. The name is German, combining two names meaning brother and home. Andrew, Alberta (named after early settler Andrew Whitford) shares its name with among others Andrew, Iowa, a town of similar size located on
the east central part of the state. Though Mundare has one of the nicest entrances and main streets of any small town in Alberta, it seems to lack a twin town or city of the same name. Mundare is now closing in on 900 in population and is the home of the Basilian Fathers Museum. Chipman, once the largest town in Lamont County before fires set it back, was named after Clarence Campbell Chipman, secretary to Canada’s sixth Prime Minister Sir Charles Tupper. Chipman, Alberta shares its name with Chipman, New Brunswick (population 1,300). The Chipman from Atlantic Canada was named after Ward Chipman Jr., a chief justice of the province from 1834 to 1851.

From Where I Sit: Ignorance or apathy?
By Hazel Anaka Have you ever slept with someone who snores? Have you been tempted to smother said person with a pillow, to once and for all, get some blessed silence? Do you have the misfortune of being the one who doesn’t fall asleep first? Have you stared at the ceiling hoping for a break in the rumbling long enough to allow you to drift off? Have you jabbed the offender in the ribs or snarled ‘turn over’ to get him to stop? A couple of years ago, when I could no longer stand it, I nagged Roy into getting a referral for a sleep study. It wasn’t a totally selfish act. With a family history that includes both parents dying of heart disease and his own hypertension since age thirty, the risks of untreated sleep apnea are real. The study involved
being hooked up to a machine for a minimum of five hours of sleep. The computer inside it measures oxygen saturation, snoring, and sleep disturbances. In 2014, on the classification of Sleep Apnea (ApneaHypopnea Index), Roy had mild sleep apnea. In his case, it was five stoppages per hour. The pressure) machine. Two years later he’s yet to follow through. Cue the snoring and likely a worsened condition. Several weeks ago as I was meeting with a nurse about something else I mentioned that my nights were hell because I have to pee several times a night. ‘Have you ever been checked for sleep apnea?’ she said. Huh? No. She said frequent nocturnal urination is a symptom. Instead of the body waking up because I’ve got to pee, it says ‘I’m awake so I might as well pee.’ Well, son-of-a-gun. I got the referral, did the sleep study, and found that my sleep apnea is twice as bad as Roy’s. An average of ten stoppages per hour, much worse if I’m sleeping on my back. For several weeks, I’ve been using a loaner CPAP machine and trying out different masks. From the very first night, I’ve been sold on this solution. My results are

I’ve eliminated some mask styles because they aren’t comfortable and have ended up with the first one I tried. At each follow-up appointment the respiratory therapist uploads the data from the sim card and analyzes the results. In week one, the apneas were reduced to less than four. Since then the results have been as low as point four per hour. Peeing is now manageable. So, my lovelies, be

aware that untreated sleep apnea is very dangerous to your health and well-being. Symptoms include lack of energy, morning headaches, hypertension, frequent nocturnal urination, depression, obesity, large neck size, excessive daytime sleepiness, nighttime gasping, choking or coughing, reflux, and snoring. It is largely undiagnosed and takes a tremendous toll. Don’t let ignorance or apathy stand in the way of diagnosis or treatment, from where I sit.

Bruderheim hosts judges from Communities In Bloom KERRY ANDERSON Communities in Bloom judges Roger Younker and Karri Loadman were toured around some of the most beautiful areas of Bruderheim on July 18, judging the “five bloom” town for the 2016 competitions. Bruderheim Communities in Bloom volunteers, town staff and dignitaries proudly showed off the town’s tidiness, tree care, floral displays, landscaping, environmental awareness, and heritage conservation. The day started off with a meet and greet at the fire hall, and ended with a potluck supper at Old Walker School to celebrate the re-opening of the Bruderheim Museum with the Ag. Society. Many businesses and volunteers contributed to this year’s Communities in Bloom in Bruderheim including local greenhouse, Thiels, which donated knowledge, assistance, and flowers for the berm along Highway 45. This year Bruderheim is competing in the National Edition of Communities in Bloom in the “Up To 4,500” population category. The benefits to the town are to foster community pride, while enhancing green spaces and improving environmental responsibilities. National and international judging results will be announced on Oct. 27 in Regina. Bruderheim will be competing against the towns of Hanna and Valhalle Centre Alberta, Ituna and Maple Creek Saskatchewan, Windsor NS, and Witless Bay NL. Judge Younker is from Charlottetown, PEI while judge Loadman is from Kamloops, BC.

Around 35 kids participated in the Sunday morning Little Sizzler Rodeo that started off with the sheep getting loose, more than once. They enjoyed more mutton busting, dummy roping after an explanation and demonstration of proper roping techniques, stick horse barrel racing, as well as many other mini rodeo events, along with a chuckwagon lunch to satisfy the hungry cowboys and cowgirls.
Saturday morning pancake breakfast was served by the Golden Girls Catering to around 300 morning people. Golden Girls Catering also served up a couple hundred steaks during the Saturday evening BBQ steak dinner.

A two leg catch for these cowboys in Team Roping
Professional Rodeo Clown Denny Halstead delighted fans with his thrilling and dangerous ʻleapʼ through 16 feet of fire.
The Bench Show attracted 44 exhibitors with approximately 600 entries. Around fifteen Market Place vendors, mostly local, brought a variety of items for fair goers to purchase on Saturday.
The Combine Krunch was well attended both days and the Friday night downpour added excitement making for some muddy, soupy areas for combines to get bogged down in. Twelve entries in the Combine Krunch Saturday had the crowd cheering with the action. Sunday a calcutta auction with the 6 final contestants brought in $1500 in bids. A Battle of the Brands truck vs truck pull competition followed the Sunday Krunch. The Lamont Fire Department was on hand at all times during the event. The Lamont Ag. Society donated $500 for their help during the event.

Bruderheim Arena’s new name will honour dedicated resident Karol Maschmeyer SUBMITTED ARTICLE Bruderheim’s hockey arena–which has been the subject of fundraising efforts for years–will soon have a new name. The local Maschmeyer and Shwetz families recently approached the Town with a proposal to donate to he facility and rename it after Karol Maschmeyer. She was a wife, a mother, a grandmother, and a very significant member of the community. “We wanted to memorialize her–she took great pride in Bruderheim and always wished to leave a place better than when she came,” says Arlan Maschmeyer, Karol’s son. And with the family’s support of the facility, she will do just that yet again. The donated funds will go toward arena renovations and the addition of a hockey ‘hall of
fame’ room to create a space for celebrating family and sport, just as Karol would have wanted. “Karol’s accomplishments–both in her family and in her community–left behind a legacy,” says Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch. “The Town is honoured to have our arena bear her name.” Karol moved to Bruderheim in 1965 and quickly made it her home. She was a founding member in the construction of the Bruderheim Arena in 1971–an influential contribution that allowed her three children and 14 grandchildren to participate in hockey and thrive at the sport. Many of her children and grandchildren excelled in hockey and other sports. The hall of fame room, which will be located in
the upstairs portion of the arena, will showcase their incredible accomplishments, along with the achievements of other local athletes. “Karol enjoyed seeing the town improve and would admire all of the current projects being undertaken by Council, Administration and all the residents,” adds Karoden Shwetz, Karol’s daughter. “She was a doer.” That was certainly evident in all she did for the community–Karol established the Bruderheim Light Horse 4H Club, fostered the acceptance of the Buckskin breed in Canada, set up the Canadian Buckskin Association, chaired the Bruderheim Tourism Committee, helped to develop the Bruderheim Campground and designed the prototype of the Bruderheim flag.
“The renovations and the renaming of the facility to the Karol Maschmeyer Arena will be unveiled officially in September of this year. We are very excited to be a part of this. It is a very significant milestone for both Bruderheim and Karol’s family,” says Mayor Hauch. “Karol loved history,” adds Arlan. “She will forever be a part of our family and of Bruderheim’s history. She always gave more than she took and we hope that this renovation will be enjoyed by many.”
