Lamont man wants 24 hour emergency care Recent health crisis forces senior to make request Michelle Pinon Editor

A recent health crisis for one Lamont senior citizen was enough for him to wonder why the local health care centre does not have a true 24 hour emergency service. Len Doskoch, who developed sever abdominal pain the evening of May 4 was surprised when the ambulance had to transport him to the hospital in Fort Saskatchewan instead of dropping him off at the Lamont Health Care Centre (LHCC). Doskoch, who resides in Greenfield Echoes, (which is situated directly north of the health centre), says that he decided to retire in Lamont because of the hospital, but that it is not currently serving the community properly. In a letter to the health care board, Doskoch stated, “Accidents and sickness does not happen just between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.” He questioned why the health centre does not have 24 hour emergency service and asked when that will be restated. He went on to say in the letter, “It is my understanding that in the mid 1990’s, the emergency service was limited due to a doctor short-

age. Times have changed and I believe that with the beautiful facility we have to serve not only this community, but the surrounding area, this has to be revisited. I know for a fact that without proper emergency services, it is hurting the development of the Town of Lamont and is creating undo pressure on the Fort Saskatchewan Hospital.” Doskoch also sent his letter to the Town of Lamont, and is hoping for a response from the municipality as well as the health care centre board which next meets on Tuesday, June 23rd in the rotunda of Morley Young Manor at 2 p.m. Doskoch says the Lamont Health Care Centre is a first class facility, but is not being utilized to its full potential, and he says having 24 hour emergency care would go a long way to reaching full potential. He vows to continue to pursue the matter “until it gets taken care of” so that all town and county residents will have emergency access 24/7. Both LHCC Executive Director Harold James and Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner were contacted via email for comment, but did not respond before press time.

Powerama truck and tractor racing coming to Lamont One of many events planned during community fair and perogy festival Michelle Pinon Editor

Powerama 2015 will provide non-stop action and entertainment for one and all on Saturday, June 20 in Lamont. “It’ll be a real treat,” says Tim Bartz, one of the organizers of the event. He says it will be a loud and exciting event that will feature mini tractors, street trucks, modified two and four wheel drive trucks, modified tractors, pro-stock tractors, and a semi pulling competition. “It’s going to be a really exciting event,” adds Bartz. Organizers will be supplying ear plugs for fans, and the ATPA (Alberta Tractor Pullers Association), will be supplying the entertain-

ment. “The action will pretty well be non-stop all afternoon,” says Bartz. The competition is also open to local competitors as long as they pay entry fees. He is hoping for some local entries, and believes the event will be a hit with local residents. Bartz says the event is also good value for your money as tickets are only $10 each, which also includes admission to the Strathcona Mounted Troop Musical Ride that is slated to kick-off at 7 p.m. Bartz, along with a couple of organizers made a special trip to Drayton Valley this past weekend to get a firsthand look at Powerama 2015. They checked out the souped up vehicles

as well as got some information and measurements. “We checked out the compaction of the track, how to resurface it between runs, and maintenance before and during the event.” Besides technical details, Bartz said they got to see how the crowd, (estimated around 2,000 people) reacted during the funfilled show. Bartz says the track here in Lamont has had the clay worked up and site prepared using skidsteer, box level and grader. In the coming week they will be erecting a chain link fence on the west side between the track and bleachers. Bartz expects Powerama to become a regular attraction during

the Lamont Community Fair, and invites one and all to come out that day. The fair will kick-off with a parade at 11 a.m. and will be followed by a

pancake brunch sponsored by the Lamont Lions Club. There will be a concession, as well as bird house making, market square featuring over

40 vendors, entertainment and perogy supper. There will be plenty to see and do, so circle June 20 on your calendar.

Opinion From Where I Sit: What I Know For Sure

By Hazel Anaka On the last page of every issue of O magazine, Oprah has a column entitled ‘What I Know for Sure.’ In those few words she summarizes the life lesson that

supports the theme of that issue. Some recent topics included: 1. “The only thing you shouldn’t miss is what matters to you.” 2. “What daring, brave, unconventional, adventurous, aspiring, and inspiring dream can you behold?” 3. “Am I having a good time? Am I doing what I really want? What does fun look like?” 4. “Our internal space has to be given the same level of respect and diligent attention as the external.” 5. Freedom is “to wake up at dawn and decide what to do with the day.” As with all things Oprah this is big. Big

concepts, big aspirations, big challenges. Ever the marketer she’s also captured them in a book by the same name. Because I’m not the big thinker, big success Oprah is, my own list is more simple, more observational, more tongue-in-cheek. Here, in no particular order are some things I know for sure: 1.) No matter how warm, beautiful, promising March first appears, she is at heart a scheming harridan who will wallop us (at least once) into accepting her supremacy as a bi-polar weather goddess. 2.) Having just binge-

watched season three of ‘House of Cards,’ it becomes apparent that it’s not easy (or perhaps possible) to sustain the calibre and edge-ofyour-seat intrigue of the early writing. It’s better than a lot of what passes for entertainment out there but overall it wasn’t as good, in my opinion as the previous two seasons. I’d blame myself for being distracted while watching, but all thirteen episodes, no, not my fault. 3.) If you can’t attend your church Joel Osteen’s TV ministry may provide a reasonable alternative. His message is faith based but

also sounds like something a success coach would advise a client. A recent sermon to a full church that seats 16,000 people warned that what we say has the power to affect our lives, whether the words are positive and loving or fearful and destructive. He says that having worries and doubts or negative thoughts is natural. It’s when we give voice to those thoughts that they really begin to hurt us. 4.) I’m reminded that I prefer people with humility. It’s wonderful to be successful—financially; academically; vocationally as a cook, a mother, a carpenter, a

whatever. Better yet if the accomplishment is accompanied by modesty. I’m turned off by arrogance and self-promotion. True talent will be self-evident. It doesn’t require a tickertape parade to get our attention. Everyone had a first day, first job, first mistakes. To forget that, and harshly judge others further back on the continuum that connects us all, is unfair and possibly cruel. We owe it to those behind us to mentor not minimize. That, my lovelies, is what I know for sure today, from where I sit.

For the common good This urgent plea came through on my email last Friday: "Children Must Be Protected from Ben Levin." The plea, in the form of a press release from Dr. Charles McVety from the Canada Christian College in Toronto. “The Institute for Canadian Values is saddened by the minimal sentence given to a man who has practiced heinous crimes against children. A three year prison sentence will not protect children from this man. The girl whom he was preparing to be sadistically sexually assaulted was one eight-yearold and will be eleven when this man is free and on the street again.” McVety went on to say, “Dr. Ben Levin admits to teaching people how to prepare their children to be violated. This same man was the Deputy Minister of Education, while under his authority his ministry prepared mandatory curriculum for all teachers to expose little children to explicit sexual content and ideas. For the sake of the children the

Ministry of Education must reexamine all of Dr. Levin’s initiatives. The hotly contested and highly controversial new sex education curriculum that was approved by the Wynne government and is expected to be taught in schools throughout that province this fall. In an act of protest, parents pulled their children out of school less than a month ago to publicly object to the curriculum. I wonder just how closely entwined his ideology and the legislation that was drafted and passed are in comparison to public opinion and commonly held values parents want instilled in their children? One thing is certain, Levin who was formally convicted of making written child pornography, making available child pornography, and counseling a person to commit sexual assault upon a child, will now have time behind bars to think about the crimes he admittedly committed.

Dial 811 for health advice EDMONTON/CALGARY - Getting trusted health advice around the clock just got simpler with the introduction of the 811 phone number for Health Link, Alberta’s free, 24/7 health information and advice line. The new number replaces the existing 10digit local numbers in Calgary and Edmonton as well as the provincewide toll-free number. The old numbers will continue to direct callers to Health Link for the time being. In a medical emergency, Albertans should continue to dial 911 or visit the nearest emergency department. “Health Link is an invaluable service that gives Albertans across the province telephone access to registered nurses and other health professionals, said the Honourable Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health and Minister of Seniors. “By changing Health Link’s number to 811, access to experienced, responsive health advice will be even easier. This is the kind of universal, accessible, public health care delivery that Albertans expect and depend on.

Newly acclaimed Mundare councillor ready to take on the challenges ahead Michelle Pinon Editor

What is most striking about Lisa Couchman is her positive outlook, and she will be bringing that characteristic to her new position as town councillor when she officially takes her seat this week. Lisa and her husband decided to settle down in Mundare two years ago because of its warm and welcoming atmosphere. “I love this town,” says Couchman. Mom to three children, Couchman says she feels very privileged to have made such good friends in such a short period of time. She enjoys volunteering and is the fundraising co-ordinator of Mundare School’s parent advisory council. She assists in a variety of ways, pitching in whenever and wherever she can whether it’s for the school, dance club, or soccer and baseball teams. Car pooling is a necessity for her, and several other moms who juggle work and family and extra-curricular activities. “I like to be involved in the community,” adds Couchman, who is the “can do” type of person that can be relied upon. She has sat on various volunteer boards and committees since becoming a mom. Pitching in is important in a small community, and Couchman says she likes to be a part of it in any way, shape or form. “You help out where you can.” She isn’t the type of person who likes to drop the ball, and when she commits to something she gives it her full attention. Couchman never thought of running for public office, but says people started asking her if she was running for town council shortly after

Mary Greening stepped down. “When the first person asked, I kind of laughed.” When the next person asked if she was running for council she asked them if they had been talking to the person the first person who had approached her. “They said no.” Then she began to ponder the idea. Soon after, total strangers would come up to her and ask the same question. Couchman, who works at Mundare Registries, has no agenda going in to the position; but expects there will be a huge learning curve ahead of her. She is looking forward to learning more about the New town councillor Lisa Municipal Government tonight’s council meeting. Act, and how things operate at the local level. “I think there’s a lot of potential in this town.” Couchman is hoping to help foster more business and residential development in the community. “The more tax money we have, the more we can do.” She says roads are always a concern for residents, and infrastructure is a top priority no matter where you live. Couchman hopes council will be able to incorporate more environmentally

Cullen’s latest book: The Canadian Garden Primer, An Organic Approach features 208 pages and over 400 pictures; will be available for sale that day at the Lamont Home Hardware. “It’s exciting for us and good for the town,” says Debra of Cullen’s visit. She adds that staff Lorraine Dzwinko and Linda Hussey have been working extremely hard to prepare for the start of the gardening season and grand opening event. Both ladies have received specialized training, and will be able to assist customers in any way. Debra says there is quite a process involved in becoming a Mark Cullen Approved Garden Centre, and is

happy that everything has fallen into place, just in time to mark their fifth anniversary with Home Hardware. Cullen has over 500,000 books in print in Canada. His latest book is his 18th book and fourth hardcover book and is also available at Chapters/Indigo. Cullen reaches out to millions of Canadians each and

every week through various media outlets with a message that is distinctly Canadian. He has a familiar style that people can relate to and delivers a message that is compelling, fun, informative and inspirational. Yaremcio Honey flies into Mundare creating quite a buzz with students By Sian Vadnais Library Technician

80,000 wings regulating the hive temperature. The students had a close encounter they’ve likely never had without being stung, and will probably never have again. Students were also surprised by such facts as; much of the produce we see in the stores are dependent on bees to survive, that one bee produces less than a gram of honey in her lifetime, and male bees don’t have stingers! When one honey loving student asked how much honey he dreams of making, Yaremcio

Monday May 25th was a very “buzzy” day as Mundare School played host to 40,000 bees and their wrangler! Michael Yaremcio, beekeeper, flower enthusiast and co-owner (with his brother Dustin) of Yaremcio Honey came to share his passion, and his bees. Inspired by an apiarian experience in Australia he returned home to pursue his certification in Commercial Beekeeping in Grande Prairie. Beginning each presentation with the question “ W h o ’ s afraid of b e e s ” ? , almost all hands were raised, but by the end, after an informative and entert a i n i n g power point and beetalk, stu- Wrangler Michael Yaremcio dents got to talks to the students before safely examthey get to touch the beehive. ine our prod u c t i v e fuzzy friends in a special travelling hive. Fascinated by the swarming mass behind the Plexiglas, all students from PALS to Grade 8 searched for the elusive queen, listened to the hum, and felt the vibrations of

Correction In the May 26th edition of The Lamont Leader on Page 8, the article with the headline: Local health care professionals raise $2,300 for breast cancer programs; the fifth paragraph should have read: We are proud to share that as a health care organization, we raised $2,315 in the one day. When we began this challenge in 2010 we earned $1,400. We aim to surpass our total donations each year that we participate in this worthy cause. Each year, we have charitable staff donate items towards a free draw and our winner was “tickled pink” to have won. We also celebrated our success by inviting staff to treat themselves to strawberry shortcake, donated by our wellness committee.

chuckled as he replied ‘one million pounds’! Michael related that he is constantly fascinated by the bees; how little we actually know about how they communicate

and create with such amazing precision and how much more we have to learn. He hopes that through this presentation some myths and misconceptions were

dispelled, fears allayed and interests piqued. Fielding some very interesting questions and playing ‘where’s the drone’ with the students watching the hive, the

students enjoyed participating in the presentation as much as Michael enjoyed presenting. It was a naturally sweet day.

Lamont students learn life saving techniques thanks to the heart and stroke foundation Junior senior high school receives automated external defibrillator Michelle Pinon Editor Students at Lamont High are learning to save lives with the help of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Grade 10 and 11 students along with two staff members recently received Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) during a one day session. “Students enjoyed the training on the new AED and felt it was important for them to be able to help someone in need if the situation ever presented itself, stated assistant principal Garry Russell. “Several students are registered in the Registered Apprenticeship Program at LHS and training on how to use an AED will help them in becoming better prepared for the work force. Russell expressed his gratitude to all the sponsors who donated funds towards the purchase of the new machine. According to the foundation, over 47,000 Grade 10 students have been trained to do CPR and use an AED. As well,

more than 2,000 Alberta high schools have an AED. The foundation believes that everyone should learn the lifesaving skill of CPR and know how to use an AED because anyone can suffer sudden cardiac arrest. It also believes AEDs should be as available as fire extinguishes in public places across Canada, and has been a strong advocate for increased public access to AEDs. According to statistics, one in 166 young people are at risk of sudden cardiac arrest within the school or at home or work; but few know about these risks. “Every year, there are approximately 40,000 cardiac arrests in Canada, and 85 per cent happen outside of hospitals. Sadly, the survival rate for out of hospital cardiac arrests is approximately five per cent. An individual’s chance of survival can be double when CPR is used in combination with an AED - a safe and easy to use piece of equipment that helps reset the heartbeat after a cardiac arrest, as pointed out in the May 28th press release. Last Thursday, the

“innovative partnership between the Heart & Stroke Foundation and Enbridge officially began with the announcement that 33 AED’s will be outfitted in Alberta school and thousand of students trained in their use. The program, made possible with a $350,000 sponsorship from Enbridge, was announced at Salisbury

Composite High School, one of six Elk Island Public Schools, (EIPS) that will receive AEDs. “We are thrilled that six of our schools will receive AEDs to enhance their existing emergency preparedness and response plans,“ said Lisa Johnston, occupational health and safety specialist with EIPS. Not only do AEDs reduce death from sud-

den cardiac arrest, the resuscitation training students will receive is a huge opportunity. Our students will gain the necessary tools and confidence to save lives in the community, added Johnston. Up to 100 students and staff at each school will be trained in CPR and proper use of an AED. “At Enbridge, we believe we have a fundamental

responsibility to help strengthen the communities where we live and operate to be a good neighbour, and through our partnership with the Heart & Stroke Foundation together we will equip thousands of students with the lifelong skill of AED and CPR training, said Cynthia Hansen, senior vice-president of operations with Enbridge.
