As ceremonies conclude, Lamont High grads toss their academic caps in the air in celebration of concluding high school.

2019 graduating class of Lamont High takes first step to adventure MAUREEN SULLIVAN "Every adventure requires a first step," was the theme of the 2019 graduating class of Lamont High. Graduation ceremonies took place on June 7, at the high school. Family and friends stood as the graduates entered the gymnasium and took their seat on the stage. Master and Mistress of Ceremonies, Nigel Kroeker and Destiny Brophy introduced each speaker and kept the ceremony moving along. Trustee Colleen Holowaychuk, spoke on behalf of the Board of Trustees for the Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS). Speaking about how parents have been there for the first step of every adventure for the students to date, it was up

to each graduate to step out on their own now. "Every journey can be an adventure if you want it to be," said Holowaychuk, "but don't forget where you come from and the people who are here to support you." Mayor of Bruderheim, Karl Hauch, brought congratulations from the community. He spoke about the journey the graduates will face going forward to higher education or jobs saying, "Some days will be tougher than others but you must persevere." Dave Taylor, Councillor for the Town of Lamont, also brought congratulations from the community. "Keep taking that first step. Whether it is to the front, side or back, it will always be an adventure."

Superintendent, Mark Liguori of EIPS, congratulated the graduates saying this day was the result of their hard work and perseverance. "You will make mistakes that will seem insurmountable as you move forward but remember the friends that have stood by you and your connections with people is what is most important." Principal, Amit Mali, gave the Principal's Message to the graduates, saying it may be scary to leave the structure they have known for the last 13 years but to remember if they make missteps, that they have learned the skills to get back on track. “Take your skills and go forward and make the world a better place. Take that fear and let it turn you into the best person you

can be." Valedictorian, Landon Zabel, thanked the school staff, parents and the graduates for the hours of hardwork. "This graduation is the first step to becoming adults… We take with us the lessons we have learned… Remember to live and enjoy the little moments… We say farewell to school but not the lessons, memories and friendships." Julia McGill, gave the tribute to parents and staff, thanking them for all they had done to prepare the graduates for their next adventure. Teacher, Bryan Dussault, gave the Message from Lamont High Staff. Continued on Page 7

Inevitable closure of Andrew Senior High becomes reality after EIPS Trustees vote MAUREEN SULLIVAN It's official, the Andrew School Senior High program will close on June 30. The Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) Board of Trustees voted on June 6, in favour of closing the senior high program at

Andrew School, effective June 30, 2019. What this means for Andrew School is its grade configuration will change to kindergarten to Grade 9 and it will no longer offer a senior high program, as of the 201920 school year.

Final Andrew High School grad

The last high school graduate from Andrew School, Noemie Desjardins, is celebrating her graduation with the students of the Next Step Program in Fort Saskatchewan on June 21 at the Dow Centre.

The Board also approved a new attendance area for the students in grades 10 through 12 who live within the current Andrew School attendance area. Starting September 2019, these students are designated to go to either Lamont High or Vegreville Composite High, depending on where they reside. The transportation fees for the affected students in grades 10 to 12, will be waived for the year, a decision the Board will review annually. Before making a final decision, the Board spent a considerable amount of time reviewing and analyzing data submitted by EIPS administration and feedback collected from the comment, said Superintendent Mark Liguori in a press release. Throughout the school year, multiple public consultations were conducted with students, staff, families, officials and community members with three workinggroup meetings, a student forum and four

public meetings. The consultations confirmed that the low enrollment at the senior high level limits the access students have to enhanced educational opportunities in comparison to other schools within the Division. As such, the Board felt by redirecting students to Lamont High and Vegreville Composite High they’ll have better access to programming options, program-specialty teachers, extracurricular opportunities, team sports and a more well-rounded senior high experience, Liguori said. Between now and September 2019, EIPS will work closely with students and their families to ensure the transition to their new school is handled smoothly and with sensitivity. EIPS’ Supports for Students department will put a school transi-

Opinion Noble plastic bans needed across the globe, not just in Canada Too much plastic is harming our environment, likely far more than man-made climate change from industrial pollution despite the latter being pounded into our collective skulls daily. Since the 1950s some eight billion tons of plastics have been produced and roughly only nine percent of that is ever recycled. The remainder, slow to decompose, ends up in landfills and the majority reportedly ends up in the world’s oceans. That is why when Prime Minister Trudeau announced the Liberal plan to ban single serving plastics in Canada starting in 2021 (at the earliest), the concept is indeed good for the world however (like the carbon tax) the end result may be quite ineffective. Canada is a carbon sink. Our trees, plants and boreal forests suck in more carbon than the country’s population is capable of emitting. Meanwhile China’s emissions and the whole Asian Pacific region has an annual carbon growth rate of 3.1 per cent and will be responsible for over half the world’s carbon emissions within just a few years. East Asia seems to have no plan to stop or slow down emissions, yet Canadians pay carbon tax as the Liberal government’s solution to try to slow down the minuscule amount of emissions (comparatively) that Canadians produce. The same thing is now happening with plastics. Of the top 30 plastics polluting countries in the world, Canada isn’t even on the list. These top 30 produce some 250 million tons of plastic waste yearly, and the highest estimate I could find for Canada was 3 million tons per year. China produces the most single serving plastic waste at some 60 million tons each year. Even if Canada cut its plastics back to zero, it would only amount to the world saving one percent of its present plastic waste. Soon in Canada, according to Trudeau, companies that produce harmful single serving plastics or sell plastic products will be responsible for the collection and recycling of their plastic waste. “Whether we are talking about plastic bottles or cell phones, it will be up to the businesses to take responsibility for the plastics they’re manufacturing coming out into the world.” As Mahatma Gandhi once said: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” It will continue to be expensive and inconvenient for Canadians to follow this noble lead by the Trudeau government. We can only hope other nations follow soon, and that this isn’t just some Liberal ploy to win back its voters reportedly leaning Green Party. Kerry Anderson

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Mexico should be Canada’s best friends because of US dispute In an unprecedented move last week, and in a single tweet, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed five per cent tariffs on all Mexican imports until the illegal immigration issue gets resolved. As the world now realizes, when the White House is willing to intertwine foreign and trade policies, markets around the world tumble. In fairness to the United States, China has done the same thing many times. It’s doing it right now with Canada on canola, pork and other commodities. What’s concerning is how deliberate and explicit the White House is about its intent to punish Mexico. It imposed a tariff on everything, not just on a few products. To calm things down, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland

stated clearly that the spat between our new North American partners is a bilateral affair. It may be so on the surface but this will affect Canada eventually, including our agrifood sector. Mexico is Canada’s fourthlargest market for agri-food and seafood products, with exports of just under $2 billion in 2018. The main commodities exported are wheat, canola, beef, pork, frozen fries and canola seeds. We also import many agrifood products from Mexico, mostly in winter, including coffee, tomatoes, avocados, many tropical fruits and produce. With more tariffs and trade disturbances between the U.S. and Mexico, Mexican exporters will look for another market for their products and Canada isn’t too far away.

Many Canadian importers will also appreciate the bargains that can be procured from Mexico. These tariffs could jolt Canada and Mexico into a new, rejuvenated relationship. Mexico has the 11th largest population in the world, almost 130 million inhabitants, yet we’ve barely tapped into that market over the years. But Canada’s main opponent in the Mexican food market remains in the U.S. Big box stores Walmart and Costco dominate the food retailing landscape in Mexico, with market shares exceeding 50 per cent. The new tariffs are unwelcome news for these retail giants and they may be tempted to source products outside the U.S. Continued on Page 5

Letter: Mexico Continued from Page 4 Since food safety standards are mostly harmonized between the U.S. and Canada, procuring products from Canadian suppliers isn’t risky for these companies. However, these tariffs could be a huge blow to the Mexican agri-food sector. More than 60 per cent of all Mexican agrifood exports go to the U.S., and many of these ingredients are incorporated into food products Canada imports from the U.S. A five per cent tariff won’t make much of a difference. But at 25 per cent, global supply chains will be affected, which could disrupt how countries buy and sell with each other. Canadian consumers won’t be affected much if this remains a bilateral spat, but that’s far from guaranteed. This dispute between Mexico and the U.S. has reached a level we’ve never seen in the Western world. One country being punished economically for a very contentious, socio-political issue is new ground in the West. Using trade regulations to force a partnering nation to make policy changes is worrying. Canada could be America’s next target,

through sanctions on immigration, cannabis or some other product or issue. Who knows? Agri-food has always been the tip of the spear when it comes to trade disputes. It will affect consumers and will eventually hit Canadians if this escalates. These new tariffs could be an opportunity for Canadian exporters, but nobody really knows how long they will last. The recent signal from the White House is extremely concerning. It’s not just about economics anymore – it’s about global dominance of political economies. Anything is possible. That’s not exactly surprising, given what we’ve seen since 2017, but Canada is more vul-

nerable than ever. The agri-food sector needs to capitalize on our newlyratified trade agreements with Europe and Asia so we can diversify our portfolio and hedge against future American temper tantrums. Diplomatically, even if the United StatesMexico-Canada trade deal isn’t in jeopardy, even if we’re not now very close to Mexico, we need to be. This dispute can benefit Canada but only time will tell for how long. For now, Mexico should be Canada’s new best friend as far as agri-food imports are concerned. So we should all start consuming more Mexican products. Break out the guacamole! Dr. Sylvain Charlebois

Bruderheim puts Jr. A team on ice

JANA SEMENIUK In a unanimous vote, Bruderheim council decided to hold off making a decision on bringing in a Junior A hockey team for at least one year. Brian Brown and Ron White, of Western States Hockey League, brought forward a presentation to council at a special meeting May 27 in hopes of bringing a Junior A hockey team to the town. Their presentation highlighted positive focus for the town of Bruderheim by way of having a local hockey team, as well as revenue generated from games. The WSHL was hoping to begin its partnership with the town of Bruderheim for this fall. During an in-camera session at their June 5 meeting, council discussed the plan and made the decision to bring it forward for deliberation next year. “I understand where

they are coming from,” said WSHL commissioner Ron White “There are things the league would need to approve to make the venue usable for the coming season. We will be happy to revisit next year and look much sooner next year than we did this year.” Bruderheim chief administrative officer Patty Podoborozny cited the reasons as being mainly financial as well as logistical. In order to meet the needs of a local team, the Karol Maschmeyer Arena would need to undergo significant upgrades including standardized seating, washroom upgrades, additional concession space for liquor sales as well as extra dressing rooms, she said. “For a project of that magnitude we would have to tender it out. It would cost more than $200, 000 we are legislat-

ed to tender out and that process takes about six weeks,” said Podoborozny. “So we’re talking mid July and they want to be in at the beginning of September. It’s just too much of a strain on time.” She added that it is within Bruderheim’s five-year plan to do these upgrades, planning for the 20/21 budget year. Council would also like to look at some grant opportunities that may help financially support the upgrades when they are ready to move forward. “Council voted to keep our options open and look to next year as an opportunity” said Mayor Karl Hauch “We were very grateful for the opportunity and I believe as our town grows, we will be looked to for other opportunities in the future”

Construction starts on Bruderheim hemp facility BY JOHN MATHER Heavy equipment arrived on site last week and began stripping the land in preparation for construction of the Canadian Rockies Hemp Corporation decoration plant in Bruderheim. The plant build is on schedule, reports CEO Aaron Barr, and the facility should be operational by October. “We were a bit late developing our storm water management plan for the property and that took a little longer than we had planned,” said Barr. “We know there are some flooding areas in that low lying land south of town and we wanted to be sure we addressed it properly.” Now, he said, everything is on track and the physical building of the plant should start in about three weeks. Barr is very happy with the way things are proceeding with getting

growers across the area. “We’ve contracted about 35 farmers growing for us this year,” he said. “We’ll have about 14,000 acres under production all within a 150 km radius of Bruderheim.” Barr said his HR team will be setting up job interviews for plants workers around the end of August or into early September. “We’ll probably have about 10 technicians to start with the opening of the plant,” he added. “Next season I expect that will jump to between 30 and 50 workers.”

Barr has been in Germany attending a hemp conference, where delegates have come from across the globe. “We’re learning quite a bit because many other countries are much more up to speed in the hemp industry than Canada,” he said. “Right now, I’m travelling in Belgium and we’re meeting with farmers and manufacturers learning more about the industry. We looking at both techniques for farming and harvesting and equipment that we may be able to bring to Canada to build our business.”

Heavy earthmoving equipment sits on the fields which will soon be home to the Canadian Rockies Hemp Corporation Bruderheim decoration facility..

Pickleball headed for Mundare soon

BY JOHN MATHER Mundare councillor Jamie Burghardt is hoping to get a couple of pickleball courts built in the community this year. Pickleball is described as a cross between tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Two or four players use paddles to knock a ball similar to a whiffle ball over a net. It can be played by anyone from kids to seniors and it is estimated there are more than 700 pickleball players in the greater Edmonton area. “We had a couple of people approach us about starting a league in Mundare,” she said. “We have a parks society,” said Burghardt. “We had formed when we built the skateboard park. We still had some money and we’d been thinking about where to spend it and we decided to try this out. While a location hasn’t been determined, Burghardt said there had been some talk of a few places which have to be totally accessible. She did state the organization was

looking at an outdoor facility with possibly two courts. She added there were some people in Mundare who played in a pickleball league in Vegreville during the winter and they enjoyed it. “So we thought it could be a great summer activity.” She added it was something that could be done by all ages. “Kids can do it and the seniors that play floor curling can come out and if we can’t teach them how to play we’ll bring in someone who can.” Burghardt said she would like to see the facility built in time to get some play in this year. She said the facility would require level ground and the courts are built on an asphalt surface. “It will be a gravel base and then we’ll hopefully get asphalt on top,” she said. “The price is up there because the asphalt costs money.” “If we can’t come up with funds for this year, hopefully we can get it all together for next season.”

Graduation: First step is easy, second step becomes the problem and it’s okay

Principal Amit Mali addresses the gradualting class: “Take your skills. Go forward and make the world a better place.”

Continued from front He had the graduates laughing as he did a spoof of math teacher, Mr. Hope, who had given this message at the last six graduations. He went on to talk about how the first step is easy, how babies, "those bundles of poopy joy," are never afraid to take that first step. "It is that second step, where to put the foot that becomes the problem. You will get bumped, fall down and cry on some of those second steps and it's difficult and it's okay… Most beginnings are the best part of any adventure." The favorite quote and memory of each graduate was read out by Ms. Ram, as each graduate

stepped forward to receive their diplomas from Principal Mali and Vice Principal Curtis Starko. A video presentation of memories of the graduates, in photographs of their school years growing up, was presented. Then Julia Hitchings, said a farewell on behalf of the graduating class. "Thirteen years ago you packed our bags as we headed off to kindergarten, and now we pack our bags as you send us off to the rest of our lives." Graduates, families and friends, and staff enjoyed the Principal"s Tea after the ceremony and the graduates had a dance later that evening.

Don’t wait until it’s too late! Above left, Mr. Dussault speaks on behalf of the staff. Above, Julia McGill gave a tribute to the parents and teachers. Left, Valedictorian Landon Zabel spoke about taking the first steps of becoming an adult. “We take with us the lessons we have learned… Remember to live and enjoy the little moments… We say farewell to school but not the lessons, memories and friendships."

Action packed weekend for Chipman 4-H Beef and Multi Club BY CLUB REPORTER HAYDEN CHILDS The weekend of May 31 was our time to showcase what we have been “Learning to Do by Doing all year. On Friday the Beef and Sheep projects had their Show and Sale, and we were very happy with all the spectators and buyers who came out to watch and bid. We hope they liked the beef on a bun supper. This was my first year in the Sheep project. We did a bottle drive in April to pay for some of our sheep expenses. My Market Lamb (Mr. Man) sold for

$280, so with most of his expenses already paid by fundraising I will get to keep mostly all of it! I am saving up to buy a foal to use for a future 4-H Horse Project. We set up all the prizes that were bought and customized for the day, and they were fantastic. We worked really hard in our sponsorship drive this year and it paid off! On Saturday, the Horse Project members did horse knowledge level testing in the morning and mounted games in the afternoon. Horse members all received matching club neck rags

and individually customized halters. I got my horse’s name “NIKKI put on mine. Small Engines project split into two teams and finished suping up and

customizing their machines for the Lawnmower Races! It was the Camo Boys vs the Gator Girls that ended with a Tie in the Lawn Tractor-Pull Off,

4-H lawnmower races.

18 - The Lamont Leader (Lamont, Alberta), Wednesday, June 12, 2019

County traps beavers prior to dam removal BY JOHN MATHER Beavers are proving to be a nuisance in Lamont County again this year. The County has set up 40

traps in various areas to try and trap the beavers and relocate them. “It’s not a bad year, said Lamont communi-

ANDREW 3D PRINT EXPERT Jaxon Bryks, a grade nine student at Andrew School, became the expert to call when someone needed help with their project using a 3D printer. The grade nine students had the opportunity to use a loaned 3D printer for a few weeks. They each designed a project to make. The printer was a big success with the rest of the junior high students coming in on their free time to create some projects too. Bryks expanded his interests to research more about how 3D printers work and became the on call expert.

cations coordinator Heather Atkinson. “We always have beaver issues around this time of year. She added the traps are located in areas where county officials have identified water problems caused by beaver dams. Before the dams can be removed, however, the beavers have to be trapped otherwise they quickly rebuild the dams. The traps can be put on both private property and county right of ways as needed. Under the County’s Beaver Dam Flood Control Policy, all beaver issues are dealt with through the Agricultural Feldman’s office. If a dam has to be removed, the county officials will give notices to landowners who may be affected downstream, telling them the approximate date of the dam removal and subsequent water release. Any objections to the removal must be made prior to the dates of removal. Depending on what the expected damage from flooding is, dam removal on private property can be done with costs being borne by the

County, if roadways or County infrastructure is impacted. If there is no potential damage to County property, but to prevent flooding, landowners can have the County come in and removed the beaver dam at their own expenses. On the County website citizens are warned of the dangers of the beaver traps. Tampering with the traps is not something to take lightly, reads the site. People and animals can get hurt or killed if tampering is done. The fines for interfering with beaver traps is up to $50,000 or imprisonment of up to one year. The punishment is legislated under the Alberta Wildlife Act. The County information goes on to state that unauthorized removal of beaver traps could also fall under the criminal code as either theft or public mischief.

Students enjoy Pinocchio by the Alberta Opera MAUREEN SULLIVAN A retelling of the story of Pinocchio was presented by the Alberta Opera Company at Andrew School on June 6. Sponsored by the Andrew Public Library, the Andrew students and students from Mundare School enjoyed the show. Geppetto and his son Vinchenzie are a team until a woman steals him away. Geppetto's one wish is that his son returns to him. The puppet Pinocchio comes to life and goes off on an adventure to find

Vinchenzie, meeting crooks who steal his money, being thrown in jail and being swallowed by a shark. Pinocchio finds Vinchenzie in the stomach of the shark and brings him home to his father. When Gepetto is reunited with his son, Pinocchio returns to being a wooden puppet. The Alberta Opera Musical theatre for Young People is based in Edmonton, and travels throughout Western Canada.
