Lamont Community Fair and Perogy Festival does not disappoint enthusiastic crowd Michelle Pinon Editor
An estimated 2,000 people took in activities during the Lamont Community Fair & Perogy Festival on June 23 and 24 in Lamont. Of that amount, just over 700 people attended the two day tractor pull event. Alberta Tractor Pull Association (APTA) President Erwin Thompson said the weather and the track at the Lamont Ag. Grounds was perfect. Local competitor Josh Melnyk also had two first place back to back finishes in his category. Altogether there were a total of 31 competitors in the two day event, stated Thompson. Total prize payout was $25,800 for both days. “That is the highest payout in Western Canada,” he pointed out. “The organizing committee did an excellent job on all events for the fair. APTA would like to thank Lamont for having us at the fair and perogy festival. See you all next year.” The Kid’s activities were a definite hit as well with families, and the marketplace and trade show were busy all afternoon. There were many vendors for both venues and all of the food related items were on the mark. There was something for everyone, and spectacular fireworks show capped off the very successful event.

Road and sidewalk construction work begins in Town of Bruderheim Michelle Pinon Editor
Work on the Town of Bruderheim’s 2017 Street Improvements Program recently began in the West Woodlands subdivision, and is expected to take a couple of months depending on the weather. Other areas of construction include Queen Street and the Brookside subdivision. Chief Administrative Officer Patty Podoboronzy said the project will include excavation, base work, asphalt paving, concrete replacements and lanscaping. Work began at 55 Street and 52 Avenue. Barricades and no parking signs have been erected in restricted areas.
Residents have been informed there will be restricted access to their property over the course of weeks at a time. Excavating and vibratory equipment will be used during the construction process, and Kantrax stated in its website advisory that necessary precautions will be taken as we will have areas of work barricaded off. The company also recommended watering of newly sodded/seeded areas to establish growth after it is installed. The road work is funded through the town’s capital budget as well as funding through the provincial government’s Municipal Sustainability Fund, and the federal government’s Gas Tax Fund. The town’s portion of the project is $1 million dollars. “Back in 2014 the town had MPE

Applications open for perspective lodge residents in Lamont Michelle Pinon Editor
The Board of Directors of the Lamont County Housing Foundation (LHCF) issued a press release on Friday, June 23 regarding the current status of the ongoing construction project for the new seniors lodge in Lamont. The statement, made
on behalf of the LCHF by Chief Administrative Officer Harold James stated: “The Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the architect-consultant JMAA Architecture Ltd. and the General Contractor Brenex, together with the team of sub-contractors, continue to work toward ensuring that the new building project is on target with an estimated
completion in September 2017.” James went on to say, the current cost of construction is $10.8 million, and the Government of Alberta is responsible for the entire cost of construction, and the consultants who have been retained on this project. The LCHF is responsible for furnishing the new lodge, and Allwest Furnishings has been
awarded the contract to supply and install all the furnishings, added James. “The board will welcome any form of monetary donation for use toward the purchase of furniture and other

Opinion From Where I Sit: ‘Outside Behaviour’
By Hazel Anaka I love CTV’s Marilyn Denis Show because of Marilyn herself and her panel of regular experts. Among those is nutritionist, Julie Daniluk.
Her bubbling enthusiasm and healthy vibrancy today belie decades of food allergies, infections, food poisonings, and a near death experience in Thailand. The yearslong journey to heal herself is now being shared through her books, public appearances, website, and sheer zealotry. Because we know inflammation is a huge health risk, I bought her Meals that Heal Inflammation book a few years ago. It made sense but seemed to be so damn onerous to follow especially if one wasn’t suffering an imminent health crisis. To paraphrase what my hero, Jim Rohn used to say: ‘no
one falls down ill after eating the first Mars bar. What if eating an apple a day does keep the doctor away?’ The point being that poor choices are cumulative and have a way of sneaking up on us and making small adjustments can make a positive difference. Like with much new information in our lives, when the student is ready the teacher will appear. I added flags to the pages of recipes that sounded good and didn’t need a million, hardto-access ingredients or have fourteen steps in the method. Don’t recall if I ever tried a single one. Yet, when I saw Julie’s
latest book, Hot Detox I bought it. Detox sounded like a short-term, easier to succeed at venture. I read the entire book, marked promising recipes, and accessed online extras like a shopping list and more recipes. Secretly I also liked that Julie’s Ukrainian roots snuck into some recipes. The book is based on modern science plus the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda and Chinese medicine, both of which intrigue me. I haven’t (yet) scheduled a 3, 10 or 21-day detox because of my busyness and uncooperative husband. But I have tried countless
recipes and without fail loved them. So has hubby. This journey of discovery has led to more adventures: more spices, more veggies, more slicing and dicing. It would seem I’ve been a pretty boring cook who’s stuck in a rut cooking the same old food in the same old ways. My blender has seen more action in the past two weeks than in the year previous. I resurrected canning jars because glass is far safer than plastic for storing anything. I’ve made batches of vegan soup broth; roasted spaghetti and butternut squashes; mixed up a batch of
Happy Canda Day
Excitement is building for Canada’s 150 birthday, and come July 1 there will be a bevy of special celebrations to enjoy throughout Lamont County. There will be pancakes, parades, hot dogs, cake, street performers, outhouse races and fireworks to enjoy whether you stop in Andrew, Mundare, Chipman or Bruderheim. Maybe even explore one of Canada’s most popular conservation reserves? There will be so much to see and do, and best of all experience together with family and friends. The start of summer holidays is always exciting as families pack up their belongings and head out to camp, fish, site see, and explore by hiking, biking and driving to great destinations far and wide or in our own backyard. There’s so many great travel spots near and far to learn about and truly experience. Canada Day reminds me of how fortunate we are as a people to live in a country that affords us all the opportunity to live, work and succeed. Our quality of life, coupled with good education, and health care systems, is among the best in the world. The freedoms and rights democracy affords us aren’t easily measured, and until we visit other nations we won’t have a better sense and understanding of what it is we truly have. Take time to be trankful and appreciate all that life in Canada has to offer no matter where you roam. Michelle Pinon

curry spices; did chia this and that; switched to pink (and grey) rock salt; stopped coffee; made ginger tea; shopped mindfully. None of it has been difficult. I had most of the good stuff already. It has taken time though. It seems I spend whole days chopping. The crazy thing is I like it. It feels right. And righteous. It’s meditative and worth the effort. My palate is evolving. Of course, I don’t know what is happening inside but so far, I love how the ‘outside’ behaviour has changed, from where I sit.

This Week On The Web: daughter and wife proposal One man pulls off two adorable proposals at the same time
Grant Tribbett sought to make his girlfriend Cassandra Reschar his wife, but what was unexpected to all but him; he also wanted to give Reschar’s daughter, Adrianna, a daddy. Tribbett took Reschar and Adrianna out for breakfast one morning and then went to Ritchey Woods Nature Preserve in Fishers, Indiana to take them down one of the many trails to enjoy the early afternoon. About a mile in, on top of an old wooden bridge, surrounded by greenery, Tribbett got down on one knee, obviously taking Reschar by surprise. A good friend and professional photographer jumped out from some bushes and captured the special moment. After proposing, he then turned to Adrianna, stayed on his knee, and asked if he could be her daddy and that he promised to protect her and be there for her for the rest of her life. Adrianna, being a child who minds her manners, said a thank
you to the necklace Tribbett had offered, and Tribbett had to ask if it was a yes or a no. Adrianna then yelled out yes and turned to Reschar, exclaiming that she was finally getting a daddy. Reschar said the moment was absolutely precious, and she really appreciated Tribbett going the extra step for her daughter, as Adrianna is her entire world and means more to her than anything. Adrianna now shows off the necklace everywhere she goes, proud to say that she now gets to have a dad. Girl caught hanging for dear life on ride at Six Flags A terrifying moment at a popular theme park, six flags, was captured on video in upstate New
York. A gondola ride, called sky ride, was put under emergency shut down in the middle of the ride due to a rider in distress. During that time, a 14year-old female had slipped out from her seat, hanging on for dear life over eight metres above the ground. A crowd formed underneath the girl, screaming for her to let go and they would catch her. Another man had climbed up a tree that was directly beneath her seat on the ride, ready to help as he could. Eventually the girl let
go and fell towards the crowd beneath her, first getting caught in the tree, but was thankfully caught and didn’t hit the ground. She was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, as well as one gentleman who had caught her and injured his back during the catch. Six Flags shut down the ride and will not reopen it until a thorough investigation can be completed. They reassured that guest safety is of the utmost importance for the company and it will be looked into very seriously.

Gone is the face we loved so dear, Silent is the voice we loved to hear, Too far away for sight or speech, But not too far for thought to reach, Sweet to remember him who once was here, And who, though absent, is just as dear, He had a nature you could not help loving, And a heart that was purer than gold, And to those who knew him and loved him, His memory will never grow cold Loving wife Sylvia, children, grandchildren and great grandchild

Business billboard signage idea gathering interest Michelle Pinon Editor
The modern day billboard advertising approach dates back to the late 1790s, and is still being used today. Currently, the Town of Mundare has approached 17 local businesses to see if they are interested in advertising on a proposed billboard by the water reservoir by Highway 855. Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla said the proposal has two different size panels, one foot by four feet, and one foot by two feet for $300 and $150 each respectively. Zyla stated in his June 14 letter to local businesses that the panels would have to be two sided with either plastic or metal. During the June 20 regular meeting, council bandied about a few ideas in regards to materials, size of lettering, fonts, logos, etc. While elected officials would like businesses to design their own panels, they do want to develop some standards in order to have continuity. Businesses would be responsible to replace their panel if it gets damaged or faded. Council requested CAO Zyla, to create a diagram, and gather more information on pricing and materials for a future meeting.

Babas & Borshch will offer something for everyone Michelle Pinon Editor
Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood was one of several invited guests who attended the annual Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival media and sponsor launch on Thursday, June 22 at St. John’s Institute in Edmonton. Littlewood was also packing a large cheque with her which she presented to Festival Coordinator Hazel Anaka and Lamont County Reeve Wayne Woldanski shortly before lunch. This year marks the fifth year of the home-grown festival and the first year that it will be held in the Town of Lamont. As Anaka pointed out, “You may have noticed the luggage. That’s a big deal. After four successful years in Andrew, the Fesitval is moving to the Town of Lamont. A population four times bigger and being 30 minutes closer to Edmonton should help us grow. Through it all, we’ve sought to add humour and subtract pretension…the hallmarks of small town charm.” Anaka also recognized members of Lamont County council. “Without their blessing this festival would not
exist.” She also thanked Lamont County Economic Development Manager Jim Newman who has been instrumental in the planning and execution of the tourism initiative. Lamont County Reeve Wayne Woldanski remarked, “This is a very important year for Lamont County heritage as we are celebrating 125 years of Ukrainian settlement in Canada. Lamont County is the location of the first Ukrainian settlement in Canada with settlers arriving in the Star/Edna area, which is just a few miles north of Lamont, back in 1897.” Woldanski went on to say that Lamont County is a proud supporter of the event which has been a great success over the past four years, and that it “resonates the deep roots that our Ukrainian ancestors built in this province,” and thanked Festival Co-ordinator Hazel Anaka, for all of her work in making the event such a great success. He also thanked MLA Littlewood for her support, and the Government of Alberta for its contribution to the festival. Littlewood said this will be the third time she’s attended the festival, and the second time she will be competing in
the Borshch. Last year her recipe earned third place in the culinary competition, and she says she will be entering again this year. “I am going to try and attempt Gail’s (Hall) recipe and see if I can do it justice.” Hall, who passed away in late 2016 was also a great supporter of the festival, serving on the judging panel, and hosting several demonstrations since the start of the festival. This year Chef Brad Smoliaks will serve as the festival’s anchor judge for the Borshch Cook-off. Smoliak will also be heading up a Ukrainian Food Fight; a timed contest for making nalysnyky. He will also be hosting a demonstration cleverly titled: “Syr, Budz or Bryndza, This Budz’s for You.” Visitors will get a look at the process and taste the finished product, a cheese which was a staple in farm family diets. Anaka said Babas and Borshch is all about recreating those special memories of when and where they tasted the simple, down to earth, stick to your ribs comfort food and satisfying those cravings. “For the first time ever, we’ll have five Ukrainian food vendors including St. John’s Institute, our host for
today, The Purple Perogy, and three from Lamont County : Bohdan’s Ukrainian Foods, Stawnichy’s Mundare Sausage and Elk Island Catering.” In addition to great Ukrainian cuisine, there will be great entertainment, bazaar, outdoor music jam, church tours, dancing, the signature festival drink Na Zdorovlia, Ukrainian beer and moonshine from Red Cup Distillery. Some of the headliners for the Zabava will be Edmonton’s Cheremosh Dance Company, Zemlia Vocal trio, and ever popular dance band Trembita, followed by fireworks. The family friendly event will include timed Lego building contests, art lessons, crafts and inflatables for the kids. There will be two displays honouring the 125th anniversary of Ukrainian Settlement, workshops on pysanka writing and wheat grinding, contests and prizes galore, as well as a presentation by lawyer Mark Minenko about Ukrainian detainees in Alberta. There is really something for everyone. “So, whether you’re Ukrainian or a ‘wannabe’ we invite you to learn, connect,
immerse during Babas & Borshch August 26-27,”
said Anaka.

________________________ MEMORIAL MEMORIAL ________________________ In Memory of Nellie Kaluzny, June 2016 (Our Mother and Baba) In a quiet country graveyard, Where the wild flowers grow, Rests the one we loved so dearly, we lost one year ago. We visit your resting place and we put flowers there with care, But no one knows the heartache as we turn and leave you there. Your passing has left a loneliness the world can never fill, There’s not a day that we don’t love you still. May the winds of love blow gently and whisper so you can hear, That we will always love and miss you and wish that you were here. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you never went alone, For part of us went with you the day God called you Home. We think of you as living in the hearts of those you touched, For nothing loved is ever lost, and you were loved so much. Several properties in the Town of Bruderheim sustained damage in the windstorm as evidenced along Highway 45, to Mayor Karl HauchĘźs sun room, and to this greenhouse at Thiels Greenhouses. The town reported about dozen phone calls on Wednesday.

The June 20 meeting of town council in Mundare was interupted by a windstorm that knocked this tree down on main street. Mayor Charlie Gargus quickly took care of the problem in no time with his saw, and was aided in his efforts by Coun. Jason Kowal, middle, and Chief Administrative Officer Colin Zyla. Luckily, the downed limb did not hit the vehicle that was parked beside the tree.
