Mundare Fire Chief and Deputy Chief receive exemplary service medals Michelle Pinon Editor It’s those 2 a.m. phone calls, the early morning and late evening training sessions, and bailing out of family functions that are all part of being a firefighter; but Mundare Fire Chief Glenda Dales and Deputy Chief Charlie Gargus aren’t your average firefighters. The volunteer duo have been going above and beyond the call of duty for people in their community for more than 30 years, and both were bestowed with Exemplary Service Medals by the Office of the Fire Commissioner during a special ceremony on Sunday, May 24 in Red Deer. Missing dinner can be a regular occurrence, and Dales remembers the time they were called out on Thanksgiving. “My Thanksgiving dinner once fed the crew!” laughs Dales. Around 80 per cent of Alberta’s fire
departments are manned and operated by volunteer firefighters. “If we don’t have people like our firefighters, where will we be?” asks Dales in the third person. Both she and Gargus said they joined the fire department because they wanted to help out the community. The same reason they volunteered back then is the same reason they volunteer now. “We get so many thank you cards,” adds Dales. “People are so appreciative.” What is most personally gratifying for Dales, she says, “Is seeing the person’s face when they realize they haven’t lost their house or when we’re on a medical assist that their spouse or child is going to be okay. It’s really worth it.” What a lot of people don’t realize is that being a firefighter is more than just firefighting, explains Dales, as they volunteer their time to teach fire prevention in schools, fire safety to seniors, fundraising for firefighting equip-
ment, and providing a variety of services to the community. For example, they will be controlling traffic during the upcoming Telus Motorcycle Ride For Dad fundraiser on Saturday, June 13 as well as the special service at the grotto on June 28. Dales jokes that she didn’t join the department for the money, a small honorarium is paid to all volunteers, which is a small token compared to the invaluable service and SUBMITTED PHOTO sacrifice they make for Mundare Fire Chief Glenda Dales and Deputy Fire Mundare and area resi- Chief Charlie Gargus received their 30 year dents they protect. Bruderheim takes fundraising efforts to the streets New arena ice plant goal of upcoming hockey tournament Submitted Article Fundraising efforts will reach a new level in Bruderheim with its most exciting event of the year on the horizon ‘Take to the Streets’, a full day of fun which will include a street hockey tournament, art show and sale, steak supper, and outdoor concert on Saturday, June 13th. All proceeds will go to the Bruderheim Arena ice plant, a $475,000 necessity to save the community’s hockey arena. “Bruderheim has a strong sense of community and over the years our volunteers have poured their hearts, souls, time and energy into ensuring Bruderheim has a place to play hockey and host events,” says Mayor Karl Hauch. “This fundraiser will showcase our dedication and enthusiasm for our arena.” “We’ve got room for a total of 10 street hockey teams,”advises Judy Koschade, Bruderheim’s Director of
Community Relations. “We invite anyone 18 and over to register and get ready for a day of friendly competition. Registration can be completed in Bruderheim at the Town Office, in Fort Saskatchewan at Mix 107.9 and Winners Way Source for Sports, or in Lamont at Price Automotive.” “The tournament will be remarkable to see,” adds Hauch. “And we’ve got a great lineup for the concert - the Whiskey Boyz, Olivia Rose, Donny Lee and Harold Reichstein.” Tickets are available now at the Bruderheim Town Office and through Eventbrite. More information can be found on Bruderheim’s website. “We’re very grateful for our sponsors, Mix 107.9 and Co-op,” says Hauch. “We believe that with the support of these partners and our other supporters, Bruderheim will continue to have an arena to deliver quality opportunities for hockey, skating, programs and events. See you on June 13th!”

Opinion Keeping the faith Yesterday was National Missing Children's Day in Canada. RCMP K Division issued a media alert to inform the public they have not forgotten our country’s missing children, and are asking for help to bring them home. “No family should have to live with the uncertainty of a missing child,” stated RCMP Deputy Commissioner Marianne Ryan, Commanding Officer of the Alberta RCMP. “My RCMP officers in Alberta are not just uniforms; they are people who can understand the pain of a parent whose child is missing. We encourage the public to help us bring the missing children home.” On the Government of Canada’s website, there are 140 missing children posted, and as I scrolled through the pages I couldn’t imagine the heartbreak their parents must feel each and every day. For many, the days have stretched into years, and the ache of sorrow and uncertainty must be heart wrenching, for the families. It’s rather easy to forget the missing children if you have no personal connection with them, but it doesn’t diminish the significance of their life or importance of finding them. Lori Lee Kasprick, who attended Mundare School, is on the website. She went missing on Sept. 1, 1976. The search is still on for Kasprick, and it’s comforting to know that RCMP still offer hope in finding her, and others who have vanished. Hopefully, the more eyes and ears watching and listening will give police enough information to find them and bring them safely home to their loved ones.

Accurately reporting the outcome of this vote is important to the Turkish-Canadian and ArmenianCanadian communities alike. It is an extremely divisive issue for many. Lamont County council approves tender Michelle Pinon Editor Lamont County council loosened its purse strings to free up cash for renovations to its existing administration building at its May 5 meeting. Engineer Gerald Cree presented five bids to council which unanimously agreed to accept the lowest bid of $1.4 million from United Construction. Corporate Services Director Debbie Hackman informed council that a total of $1.7 million had been budgetted for the renovation project, and engineering costs pegged at $300,000. Cree said last year the only bid that was submitted for the project came in at $1.7 million, which this bid came in at 1,475,00 for a cost savings of $225,000 to the municipality. In terms of timeline, Cree said United Construction was estimating completion in 36 weeks. He felt that number was “too aggressive,” and felt between
52 and 56 weeks as a realistic timeframe. Cree added that all of the outside work would have to be completed by winter. Reeve Wayne Woldanski said the biggest concern is to have heating in before winter. Cree said they
may have to install a temporary heating system. “I’m not worried about that, but we have to be careful about computers and servers,” noted Cree, who suggested they cover them with plastic to protect them.

Book Fair Reading Mania! Students at Lamont Elementary School spent extra class and recess time in the library this past week picking out some great reads during the annual Scholastic Book Fair. Pictured here are Grade 5 students who visited the library May 22. The Lamont Elementary Book Club had volunteers on hand to assist students during their visits. Originally, the fundraising goal was set at $5,000; but that was already surpassed before the end of the book fair. A portion of the total amount of proceds is funnelled back to the library to purchase more books, literary and learning resources for the school.

Local health care professionals raise $2,300 for breast cancer programs Submitted by Jody Zabel Lamont Health Care Centre Social Worker
The Lamont Health Care Centre joined the CURE Foundation in support of its 19th Edition of the National Fundraiser for Breast Cancer on May 12. This was the health centre’s 5th year of participation in this important event. All our staff were encouraged to donate a suggested $5 and wear denim on what has been termed ‘National Denim Day.’ The CURE Foundation is a national foundation that provides funding for basic and clinical research for breast cancer. Their mission is to provide the financial support necessary to create resources that will improve the outcome for those affected by breast cancer. National Denim Day was chosen as the CURE Foundation’s fundraising event because jeans are a universal attire, worn by Canadians regardless of their socioeconomic status. As well as treating community members and their families in our facility affected by this type of cancer, several of our employees know someone who has been treated for it, or we have personally lost someone to breast cancer. We are proud to share that as a health care organization, we raised $2,315 in the one day. When we began this challenge in 2010 we earned $1,400. We aimed to surpass our charitable staff to donate items towards a free draw and our winner was ‘tickled pink’ to have won. We also celebrated our success by

From Where I Sit: The Challenge
By Hazel Anaka Every day of our lives we wake up and face whatever is most pressing in our day. It may be the mundane like getting kids off to school, fighting traffic, or staring
down the passiveaggressive twit in the next cubicle. Or it may be soul-destroying like heading to chemo treatments, watching a loved one descend into dementia, or spending money on a divorce lawyer. But happening outside those immediate inyour-face challenges are so many other external things that press in on our lives. Some may appear superficial. Others may seem so far removed from our real lives as to be otherworldly. At first glance, we may not think we are even affected by those external things. I was born in
Edmonton, attended grades one and two there, then years later Grant MacEwan College before working at social service agencies. Even though it’s now decades since I lived there, I consider Edmonton my town. I follow the politics. I offer a silent opinion on all the issues that affect Edmontonians directly: building the art gallery, Darryl Katz, the Oilers, pot holes, the Groat Bridge fiasco, fire pits, and noisy motorcycles. I worry about the crime rate. I revel in the increased self-confidence the city is enjoying as an up and comer on the move.

Likewise, I worry about Putin and the crisis in Ukraine. I feel for the Nepalese victims. I fear for the radicalization of Canadian and other youth who are sucked into the Isis insanity. I wonder about the new reality in Alberta politics and how it will affect me and mine. Naturally I stopped to watch Prince George going in to visit new baby sister Charlotte. I caught highlights of Letterman’s final show even though I never really thought he was particularly funny. I shook my head at Kanye’s spectacle during the Billboard’s Awards show. I’ve
watched Canada’s best home cooks defy time and logic every Sunday as they look to become the next Master Chef. I watch TV, read newspapers and publications, explore the internet all in a deliberate attempt to be informed, engaged, and able to converse with virtually anyone on any subject. Because ultimately, what we know will fuel our conversations, steer our decisions, enrich our lives. Of course, just because I try to follow what’s happening in the world—-both the critical and the ridiculous—doesn’t mean I can do a damn thing about most
of it. Yet, I’ve always believed that we need to look up from the minutia of our own lives and see what’s happening around us. Most of the time that exercise alone will convince us that it can always be worse; that in the big picture, we’re okay in the overall scheme of things. It will give us conversational moxie with kids, teens, contemporaries, and seniors. It will convince us to count our blessings. It may even propel us to action. The challenge is there, from where I sit.
