Alberta Premier Jim Prentice, center, made a surprise visit to the Lamont area following a breakfast and speech sponsored by the Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville PC Association held at the hall earlier Saturday morning. Around 100 members attended the special event on March 7th.

Premier Jim Prentice swoops in to Lamont Michelle Pinon Editor

Around 100 pairs of eyes were on Premier Jim Prentice when he entered the Lamont community hall Saturday morning around 9:45 a.m. Prentice was the guest of honour at the March 7th breakfast that was hosted by the Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville PC Constituency Association. Noticeably absent were representatives from the Town of Lamont, however there were elected officials from Fort Saskatchewan, Bruderheim, Chipman,

Mundare and Lamont County in attendance. Even former Premier Ed Stelmach and wife Marie were in attendance for the event. In fact, the first thing Prentice did was to formally acknowledge Ed and Marie for their sacrifice and commitment to Albertans in the past. Fort SaskatchewanVegreville MLA Jacquie Fenske introduced the dignitaries, and executive members of the local association before launching into her speech. Fenske said one of the things “we are getting ready for is the elec-

tion.” But the provincial election won’t be called until after the budget is brought down on Thursday, March 26th in the Alberta Legislature. Adam Letal introduced Alberta’s 16th Premier, and guests greeted Prentice with applause and a standing ovation. “We are where we are, and we are going to deal with the challenges that lie ahead,” stated Prentice. He also dropped a couple of cluesas to how the government plans to address the $7 billion fiscal challenge it currently faces.

Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jacquie Fenske takes a photo of her son Brock with Premier Prentice while waiting for the chance to get on the ice with members of the Lamont Pee Wee Hawks. Brock and Jim both share a love of hockey, and we’e happy to brighten the day of the players and fans.

Lamont CIBC branch to close its doors Michelle Pinon Editor

Clients of the CIBC branch in Lamont were recently advised of its impending closure and future relocation to Fort Saskatchewan.

In a letter that was not dated, but was written by Jane Sexauer, District Vice-President of CICB, she stated: “We are writing today to advise you that your CIBC Lamont branch at 5112-50 Avenue, Lamont, AB. T0B 2R0 will be relocating to the CIBC branch located at 9903-101 Street, Fort Saskatchewan, Ab. T8L 1V6. On Friday July, 24, 2015 at 1 p.m., the CIBC Lamont branch will be closing, and your accounts will be moved to the Fort Saskatchewan branch. The new location is approximately 30 kilometres southwest of the Lamont branch.” Natalie Miller, manager of the Lamont branch,

said she and other employees were not allowed to comment on the closure because of legalities, and referred the Lamont Leader to Geoff Dillion, Vice President of Retail and Banking and Business Communications and

Public Affairs for a statement. Dillion stated. “We made the difficult decision to close our Lamont branch as the result of declining business volumes. As more of our clients have chosen to bank online or via phone, our in-branch business volumes have declined in Lamont.” Dillon went on to say, “Our team in Lamont will continue to serve clients in the area until July, and we are currently looking at other opportunities for the team in nearby locations.” The letter that was sent to clients, and posted in the branch, stated: “This decision was made after careful consideration of

many factors, including declining business volumes in the branch over a number of years.” The letter went on to say, “While many of our clients in Lamont are already doing their dayto-day banking with us by phone, online, or through their mobile device, we recognize that the decision to close our Lamont branch will impact some of our clients who prefer to regularly bank with us in the branch. We value your business, and we are committed to making the transition to your new branch an easy one. A community meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 8th from 7-9 p.m. in the Lamont Recreation Centre hall. The Lamont CIBC branch celebrated its 100th anniversary in May of 2011. The current branch was built in 1951 after a fire had destroyed the old branch one year earlier. Lamont Mayor Bill Skinner said he had heard about the closure, but did not know to what the extent of the closure would be or had a chance to evaluate the news. “I haven’t seen any information as to what services would be available and where they would be available.”

Lamont County seniors will benefit from gov’t funding for safety upgrades Michelle Pinon Editor

Lenkewich said “it’ll all be better in the end for residents. Thank you on behalf of the residents. According to an Alberta Government news release, “Over the next two years, the Alberta government will direct $80 million to upgrade safety systems in 76 government owned or supported seniors housing facilities throughout urban and rural Alberta. An additional 1,750 continuing care spaces will also receive funding for fire and safety system upgrades. The news release went on to say that many of the 24,000 government owned and supported seniors units were built before 1990, before fire sprinklers became mandatory under fire and building safety codes. “This funding comes from the financial reserves of the Alberta Social Housing Corporation, and is in addition to previously allocated improvements to existing senior’ accommodations.

Despite Alberta’s current fiscal situation, a local government representative was in Mundare last Thursday afternoon announcing the province’s commitment to seniors safety. Jacquie Fenske, Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA, was on hand at Mary Immaculate Hospital and Father Filas Manor to announce those facilities as well as the seniors lodge in Andrew will be receiving funds for fire system upgrades in the near future. Fenske, who made the official announcement on behalf of Jeff Johnson, Minister of Seniors, said the province is committing $510,000 for sprinkler and fire system upgrades to Mary Immaculate Hospital, and $100,000 to Father Filas Manor in Mundare as well as $100,000 to the Andrew Seniors Lodge. Fenske talked about Premier Prentice’s commitment to seniors, and to offer “safe spaces for seniors in lodges. “One of his (Prentice’s) commitments is to safety so Mary Immaculate and other facilities built before the ‘90’s will have sprinklers installed and other fire system

upgrades done to provide a safer home for the residents. Dr. John Slanina said the funds would go a long way to ensure “our building is safe and will last longer. “This is very good new for us. Also thrilled with the news was Anthony Brannen, site administrator with Covenant Health, and head of maintenance Jack Glaubitz. Veronica Cossey whose sentiments were echoed and supported by Cindy Mulherin, senior director of operations for Covenant Health, as well as Sister Martha Zulyniak, and community board members JoAnn Dubyk, Wanda Ryan, and Cliff Moroziuk. Also represented were Mundare Mayor Charlie Gargus, Lamont County councillors Dan Warawa and Roy Anaka. Over at Father Filas Manor, other Lamont County Housing Foundation representatives, including chair Bill Skinner and Mona Mitchell Fampton were present along with administrator Harold James. Also on hand to celebrate was Al Lenkewich, who manages both Father Filas Manor and the Andrew Seniors Lodge. Even though there will be a “few disruptions in coming months,

Opinion GUEST EDITORIAL

Premier’s comments offensive Dear editor, It’s amusing to me that the leaders of this great province chose to lump everyone together in regards to the province’s recent economic troubles. Our Premier has told us to “look in the mirror” to find out who to blame. It has become obvious, to most, that the PC party, regardless of who is steering the ship, has become so pompous and arrogant towards the people who they govern that they chose to play this silly blame game. What is also obvious is they have lost touch with normal everyday citizens who work hard for what they have and really don’t have a clue what normal everyday citizens are up to. A recent interview proves this point. “I donít imagine there would be a huge public uproar, I mean Twitter is Twitter and I’m not going to speak to that,” Mandel said. ”I don’t think it’s a national conversation. I think it’s blown out of proportion,” Campbell said. “I don’t know if Albertans are offended or not, nobody has told me they’re offended.” The Twitter hashtag ?#?PrenticeBlamesAlbertans went viral Thursday with a torrent of sarcasm, memes and outrage, and was a top trender in Canada for a time. This is the finance minister and health minister speaking here. It goes to show you how out of touch they are with the future. Even if you’re not on social media or technologically savvy, you’ve probably heard about it. I think I’ll send a Morse code message to Mr. Campbell and tell him I’m offended. Sincerely, Andrew McDonald

Fundraiser to assist with operating expenses Michelle Pinon Editor

The Lamont Community Playschool Association is asking for support for their little scholars. President Jill Normore is hoping up to 150 people will respond to the parent group’s request to support its upcoming ‘The Luck of the Irish’ fundraiser to be held on Saturday, March 14 at the Lamont community hall. “The play school is hosting a dinner and dance March 14, with a family friendly comedian, silent auctions, kids raffle table, kids corner, and more,” says Normore. “The play school is hoping to foster community spirit and establish a yearly family event for the town. We are hoping this year’s event will raise between four to five thousand dollars compared to last year as tickets were hard to sell.” She went on to say, “The play school association raises funds each year to pay for annual operating costs, such as utilities, supplies, field

trips and teachers wages. With the support of our community to help defer these costs we will be able to continue to offer low monthly fees for families.” Normore is looking forward to the delicious Irish themed menu that

will include: fried chicken, sweet and sour ribs, young potatoes with cream dill sauce, perogies, caesar salad, raw vegetable salad with dressing and pistachio cheese cake. We have a special menu for children, macaroni with

spaghetti sauce and green jello for dessert.” Normore is thankful for the continued support, and hopes to see everyone sporting a pinch of green that evening.

From Where I Sit: Live Happily Ever After

By Hazel Anaka Serendipity rocks. If you’ve been paying attention in your own life you’ve probably experienced it firsthand. But let’s

begin at the beginning. About ten years ago I embarked on a weekendlong silent self-guided retreat at the Star of the North Retreat Centre in St. Albert. In this very space I’ve written about that specific experience and the benefits in general of stopping to be still. Because I’ve remained on their mailing list all this time I get their semi-annual publication. This time I paged through the program guide and saw two or three sessions that appealed to me. Because I began a yoga practice in late fall, I gravitated to those courses. With both the Yoga

Retreat: Love & Nurture Yourself and the Yoga & Journaling Workshop there were websites listed that offered more information. Nosing around one of those sites I discovered a tele course called What’s Behind the Chocolate Cake? It promised nine one-hour group telephone calls spread over four months that would help us see beyond the distractions (like chocolate cake) that take our attention away from what we really need to focus on. Because for many of us, “When we have feelings we don’t want to feel, we often reach for something else to avoid the feeling.” Early registration would

save money, have a bonus session, and include a fifty-eight-card deck of Reflection Cards. The cards are quite lovely. Each one offers a word (like Nature, Spirit, Trust), text, reflection question, and image from nature to contemplate. Randomly selecting a card to reflect on allows one to set her intention for the day, focus her energy for yoga practice, provide a prompt for journaling, set the stage for meditation, or express gratitude. Another thing that makes the tele course practical in our busy lives is the unlimited replay option if you can’t ‘attend’ live on the designated

night and time. Half way in I’ve yet to attend the session live. Even though that is not what was intended, I figure getting to the replay when I can is better than not at all. To support the learning we are encouraged to have a journal or paper and pen handy to do exercises or make notes as prompted. There are also printable handout-cum-journal worksheets to allow a person to take the process from passive listening to active engagement. Copresenters give us the benefit of two different skill sets, life experiences, examples of human frailty, and success. The twoweek break between calls

is to allow further assimilation of the material. And of course the start of this course coincides with the usual reflection and resolution setting typical in January. We are told that we don’t need to wait 365 days to begin again to improve our lives. To recap: a long ago retreat mailing list •nread the program guide • explore websites • register for tele course • do the work• use the reflection cards • strengthen yoga and journaling practice • register for new courses• live happily ever after, from where I sit.

Andrew Aces play their best hand during zone championship

MICHELLE PINON PHOTOS

Members of the Andrew Aces faced off against Kitscoty in the Zone 2 Pee Wee D championships on Feb. 28th in Kitscoty and the teams tied 2-2 in an absolute nail biter. The rematch was held on March 7 in Andrew. The Aces fell behind 3-1 in the first, but bounced back and took the lead 4-3 heading into the third period. The Aces fell behind 6-4 early in the third, and never recovered with penalties and fatigue taking their toll on the team. They played with heart, and will now have to refocus on playdowns in the 16/60 hockey league.

55th anniversary of the Bruderheim Meteorite

Students at Bruderheim School got a chance to preview their own video during the afternoon on Wednesday, March 4th. The students received a commemorative box of pick up sticks as a momento from the Town of Bruderheim. That evening a celebration for the entire community was held in the community hall. Gibbons resident and father Derek Mellott looks on with his daughter Camryn while his son Connor lifts a piece of the meteorite with the help of Dr. Chris Herd. Michelle Pinon Editor The Bruderheim Meteorite that fell to the earth out of the night sky on March 4, 1960 at 1:06 p.m. shocked and amazed a lot of people, including Stew Hennig. Hennig, who resided on a farm near Josephburg recalled the event following all of the presentations at the 55th Anniversary of the Bruderheim Meteorite on March 4, 2015 at the Bruderheim community hall. Hennig, who as about nine-years-old when the Bruderheim Meteorite touched down, said he was looking out his bedroom window to see where all commotion was coming from. “We heard it before we saw it.” The windows were rattling and the entire house shook, said Hennig. The frightened cattle were bellering and the horses squealing. Then he saw the bright flash. The next day, Hennig was told it was a meteorite. Hennig is just one of a handful of local residents who were interviewed and made an appearance on a YouTube video that was done in collaboration with Bruderheim School and produced by website specialist Jill Yanch with the Town of Bruderheim. The video, which premiered earlier in the day at Bruderheim School, told the tale of the meteorite, the impact it had on the landscape and the residents as well as its scientific importance; and footage of Dr. Chris Herd, professor and head curator of the collection at the University of Alberta’s Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. Doug Maschmeyer, who was also interviewed for the video said, “My mom thought the end of the world was coming.” The Bruderheim Meteorite was

first discovered by Nick Broda’s farm, and relatives Stella and Paul Broda, are also interviewed for the video. While many people watching the video wished they could have made history on that day, 55 years ago, many were happy to have the opportunity to hold fragments of the Bruderheim Meteorite during the community celebration that was held on Wednesday evening. About 150 people attended the evening portion of the celebration. One of those people, eight-year-old Connor Mellott from Gibbons, waited in line for a chance to hold the meteorite. Drainage problem prompts Lamont resident to take matters into his own hands

Tough times ahead for Albertans, says Premier Cont’d from Page 1 While the province isn’t facing a recession this year, Prentice spoke confidently about how Albertans would weather the financial storm and face the financial challenges with determination and resilience over the next two to three years. “The Alberta economy is going to weather this...” Prentice, who returned to the province late Friday evening, said he told the folks down east in Ottawa not to feel sorry for Alberta because “we’ll be just fine.” He said the region is the centre of the agriculture industry and innovation, and would continue to succeed in the coming years. With strong policies for economic diversification, Prentice reiterated that “our economy will be fine.” The Premier said he

recalled at least six major ups and downs in the oil industry during his life, and told the audience they would survive another downturn. He said “enough is enough” when it comes to watching OPEC determine the province’s financial future. “We have become too dependant on oil royalties to finance the province.” Prentice said that simply to ride things out and not take action was not an option. Prentice said doing nothing would eat up the province’s $5 billion contingency in six months. The $15 to $16 billion in the Heritage Trust Fund would be depleted in two to two and a half years. “It would all be gone and we would start racking up debt.” Prentice reaffirmed the province’s commitment to core services of health care and education. “But

we have to get our costs down to the national average over the course of the next three years.” Those costs he was referring to are expenses associated with services in the public sector.” Prentice said he wasn’t out to “destroy our public services,” but pointed out the need to have a “measured balance” in the public sector would be essential in the future. He told audience members not to think of the budget as a “single budget”; but as a 10 year fiscal plan. So while the economy will be slowing down, Prentice said 60,000 new Albertans are expected to come to the province this year. “They will bring children,” added Prentice, who added, “We have to keep building new schools.” He said the government can’t stop building hospitals either, and that an announcement regard-

ing additional care beds will be made in the coming weeks. He also spoke about the need to continue improving as well as adding new infrastructure, and that is specifically why the province decided to inject millions of dollars of additional funding into its Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) funding this year. As to whether MSI will continue in its present form or not, Prentice would not say, but he did vow to continue funding for municipal infrastructure projects in the future. The question the province will have to address in coming years, added Prentice, is, “How much debt do we want to leave for our children and grandchildren.” He alluded to the advertising campaign “they” are running; the

where we are going as a province...We are tough, and resiliant, and we’ll get through this together.” With that, the conclusion of his speech, audience members rose to their feet to give Premier Prentice another standing ovation.

Michelle Pinon Editor

The province will be topping up its funding for municipal infrastructure projects in its 2015 budget. The announcement came on Friday, March 6th from Diana McQueen, the Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Our government is committed to supporting infrastructure that promotes economic development, supports the province’s economy and keeps Albertans working. With this in mind, we are providing $400 million from this year’s budget to ensure municipalities have the capacity to meet their current infrastructure project commitments.” That announcement, made during a press conference, was confirmed by Premier Jim Prentice who stated in a press release, “During budget consultations, MSI and the ability to meet current infrastructure commitments and support our economy was a recurring concern among our municipal partners. This funding should help our partners meet their capital infrastructure commitments and position them well for the tough budget cycles ahead.” According to the Municipal Affairs website in the allocations link it states: “With the addition of the March 2015 allocations, the total consolidated 2014 MSI funding is $1.64 billion in MSI capital funding ($871 million previously provided

MSI capital funding and $343 million in previously provided Basic M u n i c i p a l Transportation Grant funding, plus $398.9 million from the March 2015 allocations), and $30 million in MSI operating funding.” Under the MSI capital allocations for March 2015, the Town of Bruderheim will receive $99,043; the Town of Lamont will receive $129,784; the Town of Mundare will receive $66,519; the Village of Andrew will receive $27,611; and the Village of Chipman will receive $23,607. Colin Zyla, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Town of Mundare, said it is extra funding that they (provincial government) is providing. “Originally, the town got $292,099 in 2014. It was used to complete the Whitetail Crossing intersection, reline some sewer lines and purchase a grader.” Zyla pointed out that the town does not apply for MSI funding. “The province provides us with an amount, and then we apply for projects.” Zyla went on to say that, “It is interesting to note that the amount being provided, is very close to the amount of the MSI operating grant we were getting in 2013. The operating grant was phased out and last year was the year for that grant, however, the money was given to capital funding not operating funding.” Zyla pointed out that it will be up to council as

to how it will spend the funding. Patty Podoborozny, CAO for the Town of Bruderheim, said the amount of funds that are doled out to each municipality are determined on a per capita basis. She said the town usually has to lump multiple years together in order to have enough funds to complete a project or purchase a piece of equipment. Podoborozny said the funds will go towards paving of the Woodlands subdivision that is an ongoing project. Robert Mu, Financial Officer for the Town of Lamont, said the funds are “part of the payments for the grant that we applied for the water and wastewater project across Highway 15 in 2012. “The total applied and approved amount was $1,143,690. MSI will release these payments in several years. I am aware that MSI reduced the amount of the payment in the year of 2015 due to the budget cutting by the province. The funding for last year was $383,160.” Village of Chipman CAO Pat Tomkow said the municipality had not received any information regarding the announcement, and could not comment without seeing any documentation from the province. Village of Andrew CAO Pat Skoreyko was contacted for comment, but had not responded before the Leader went to press on Monday, March 9th.

To our Angel who was taken away too soon. Janine Olenik March 14, 2014 Someone we love has gone away, and life is not the same. The greatest gift that you can give, is just to speak their name. We need to hear the stories and the tales of days gone by. We need for you to understand, these memories are all we have. We’ll never make more memories, since she is no longer here. So when you say her name, it’s music to our ears. You left us broken hearted Not knowing what to do But now we find the comfort In memories of you. The legend that you left us Was of happiness and love And that will shine on forever From the glorious skies above. We will always love and miss you babydoll. Sleep in comfort, peace and dream the dream of angels. Love Lexi, Lorne, Alex, Lorrie, families and friends 10p ________________________

Premier’s visit garners attention

When is the best time to pre-plan your funeral? The best time to begin making your prearrangements is NOW, while you’re thinking about it. While some people in their 30s, 40s, and 50s may think it’s too early, many people find that prearranging their funeral is smart financial planning and gives them added peace of mind knowing they aren’t leaving this burden to family members. By taking time now to collect cost information and calmly making choices related to your own funeral arrangements, you’ll be protecting your family against the stress of having to make these decisions at a time of extreme emotional distress. This checklist will help you make sure every detail is tended to:

Premier Jim Prentice was in Lamont Saturday morning to address members of the local PC Association, but he also stopped to talk with hockey fans at the arena. Even former Premier Ed Stelmach was in attendance for the special event that was held on March 7 at the Lamont Recreation Centre. The budget will come down on Wednesday, March 26th in the Legislature.
