Lamont County Peace Officer to request taser Michelle Pinon Editor
To Steve Crosby’s knowledge, no other community peace officer has ever requested authorization from Alberta’s Solicitor General to be able to carry a Conductive Energy Weapon (CEW). Crosby is set to be the first to make such a request, and Lamont County’s Peace Officer received council’s full support during its regular March 10th meeting. Crosby, who came before council in person with his request, stated that a CEW, or more commonly referred to as taser, is a much better deterrent than a CEW or OC (Oleoresin Capsicum
Pepper Spray) or a baton. “It is my experience with the taser that it is a deterrent much more than OC spray or the baton. I carried a taser for seven years as a member of the Edmonton Police Service, and found that it was much more of a deterrent on the street then the baton or OC Spray.” Crosby added that, “I found violators didn’t even notice the OC spray or baton, but when they saw the taser on your hip or on the thigh holster, they were much quicker to comply.” He also noted that, all the studies he’s read have shown there’s less injury to both the officer and the violator, with the taser, as opposed to the baton.
“It has also been shown that the OC spray does not work on everyone. The baton can cause massive damage to someone when trying to strike the arms if someone moves and you hit them in the head. So I have found in the seven years I carried the taser, that it was much more of a deterrent than the other weapons. Definitely, a great defensive deterrent.” Crosby went on to comment about public perception when a police officer is using a baton. “It looks very violent and people see it as very violent, where as the taser only lasts five seconds. The person doesn’t look injured, and they aren’t bleeding, no broken bones.”
Recently, there have been an increase of violent attacks against not only law enforcement, but against individuals in a position of authority such as the military, pointed out Crosby. “As a peace officer I am constantly having office-violator contact on a daily basis. Through my nearly 30 years of law enforcement, I know that some of the most difficult situations to deal with safely is a traffic stop. Most of the violators that a Peace Officer deals with at a traffic stop are already in an emotional state just by being pulled over by law enforcement. “Although I deal with every violator in a professional and respectful manner, there are times
when a violator can become abusive and aggressive. This can also be said for the time when peace officers have to talk with subjects of complaints such as: noise complaints, unsightly properties, dog complaints, liquor complaints. I have found that even people who call for assistance can become aggressors. People, in general, can be very unpredictable.” Crosby said he would definitely feel safer with a taser at his disposal. “I would like to see everyone have the taser, but right now I am trying to get it for me. If it works for me, then it may work
for everyone.” Council agreed with Crosby’s sentiments and analysis, and voted unanimously in favour of authorizing Crosby to write and send a letter of request to the solicitor general’s department. Crosby told council the cost of a taser is between $1,000 and $1,200 on average to purchase.

Mundare woman takes request for tougher distracted driving penalties to steps of Legislature
Lamont County hires headhunter Lamont County is on the hunt for a new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). Council is looking to fill the shoes of Al Harvey, who will be leaving the position at the end of September. Council officially appointed the firm of Russell Farmer and Associates Consulting Ltd. of St. Albert to oversee the headhunting process, and has allocated $20,000 to the process of hiring another top gun for the municipality. On March 10th, council unanimously voted in favour of engaging the consulting company for the task which is expected to take between three to four months. Reeve Wayne Woldanski said the budget for the CAO recruitment process is $20,000. Council’s decision not to renew Harvey’s contract was made during an in-camera session back on Jan. 13th.

Renaye Wade summoned all her strength and determination to relearn how to eat, drink, sit, stand and walk over the past two years in the wake of a tragic accident at the hands of a distracted driver. The Mundare woman didn’t deserve to suffer from multiple injuries and a brain injury. Instead of giving up on life, the 20-year-old has turned her unjust circumstances into a fight for justice for all Albertans by successfully petitioning the government for changes in legislation. This past Monday, Justice Minister Jonathan Denis voiced support for Bill 204, the Traffic Safety (Distracted Driving Demerit) Amendment Act, that was first introduced by Calgary-East MLA Moe Amery in December of 2014. The proposed legislation would assess drivers three demerits for violating the law and boost the accompanying fine to $250 from the current rate of $172. Transportation Minister Wayne Drysdale is also in favour of toughening fines for distracted driving and told reporters last week that Amery’s private member’s bill has widespread support in the Progressive Conservative caucus. Bill 204, definitely has the support of Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA, who introduced Renaye and her mother, in the Legislature on Wednesday, March 11th. “Renaye and her mother Tammy have come here today to raise awareness on distracted driving. Renaye had her life changed forever when she was struck by a semi two years ago this month. Renaye has suffered multiple injuries and a devastating brain injury. “These tragic consequences bring Renaye here today to advocate for awareness and greater penalties. You will never know what it’s like to walk in her shoes. I would like Renaye and Tammy to please rise. They are in the members gallery to receive the tradition,” stated Fenske. Renaye and Tammy, and many of their supporters, (including Fenske), held a rally on the steps of the Legislature on Sunday, March 15. They released 172 yellow balloons to mark the second anniversary of the accident. Renaye has said that no one should have to go through what she has had to go through, and having
Congratulations Doreen Renaye talks to reporters on March 15 by the steps of the Legislature. made such a strong case for tougher penalties, stands a good chance at protecting, and perhaps changing the lives for all Albertans. The proposed bill passed second reading on March 16th, and will go before the committee of the whole before coming up for third reading. If third reading is passed, the bill will then move towards royal assent and then come into force. “I would hope MLA Amery will be given unanimous consent to proceed to third reading next Monday, which will then have it out of the house and passed,” added Fenske via email March 19th. Fenske said she had only received positive feedback to proceed with the bill. “Some (constituents) have said they would like to see even stiffer penalties. The objective is to reduce distracted driving habits and if these penalties do that, we don’t have to have even stricter penalties. If the desired results are not achieved, however, Fenske said they can take a second look or perhaps make other changes through regulations.

Construction climate perfect for tendering reno project, says WSP engineer to council Michelle Pinon Editor
Perfect timing. That’s what engineer Gerald Cree told members of Lamont County council March 10th. The perfect timing Cree, with the firm WSP, was referring to was the economic and construction climate in the province in an effort to convince elected officials to put the administration building renovation out for tender as soon as possible. “In my list of builders, twelve are interested in tendering the project,” stated Cree. “It means they’re looking for work this spring and fall.” Cree also said he had not seen a jump in material costs which prompted him to make the request. “Everyone is looking for extra work now. It’s a really good time to go for it now,” added Cree. The last time a tender went out on the project, only one tender was received and the bid came in well over the original projected cost of $850,000 at a price of $1.7 million. Cree said construction companies are currently analyzing what work, and the scope of work they plan to do this construction season. Cree said he thought they would now have multiple bidders and expected the prices to
be in the range of $1.4 to $1.5 million. Chief Administrative Officer Al Harvey said he expects bids to come in around $1.2 million. If by chance there are less than three bidders on the project, Cree added that none of them would be accepted. The projected timeline Cree gave council was two to three weeks for prep work on the bid itself which then would be posted electronically with a site meeting tentatively planned for April 7, and another three to four weeks for reviewing of the tender bids. “You can go to tender in late April, and by May 7th you can issue a letter of intent and state they will be able to start work on May 11th.” Coun. Bryks asked how long the renovation would take from start to finish? Cree said it would be finished in September or October. While there are no extra engineering costs at this time, Cree said council would have to spend $7,500 to put the project out to tender. Coun. Roy Anaka made the motion to initiate the tendering process with WSP. The motion passed unanimously. Coun. Roy Bryks made a separate motion to change the May 12th council meeting to May 5th to acccomodate the proposed schedule.

Opinion Pay attention and avoid tragedy
MLA Jacquie Fenske *Exerpt from March 11th speech in the Legislature. Driving is a privilege. Driving requires our full attention at all times. Distracted driving, because our attention is diverted somewhere other than the road ahead can be avoided. Sometimes we need more than a gentle reminder to pay attention and avoid what can result in tragic consequences. Sometimes we need people like Renaye Wade to be an advocate to find a way to encourage others to pay attention. A dancer, and a dance teacher with the dream of becoming a lawyer, Renaye suffered a severe brain injury and was left in a coma for 34 days as a result of a horrific traffic accident. She has had to relearn to eat, drink, sit, stand, and walk. Over the past two years Renaye and her friends have endeavoured to raise awareness of safe driving practices. To that end, RADD was formed (Renaye Against Distracted Driving). Friends of Renaye’s
have participated in parades. Renaye speaks to young people in school assemblies. I think she has about half a dozen speaking engagements in the next month. And most recently, she has created a petition that calls for demerits for distracted driving. One day in Mundare last week I saw Renaye’s petition on the counter at the ESSO, on the counter at Stawnichy’s, and I regularly see her on Facebook. As Renaye’s mother Tammy says, Renaye will never be 100 per cent because someone didn’t pay attention in a moment. They were distracted, not focusing on the road. Renaye and her family do not want to see others suffer as she has. She is convinced that safer driving must be encouraged by adding demerits to distracted driving violations, and she is here today to support the MLA from Calgary East and his private members bill. Sunday, March 15 marks the second anniversary of the accident that changed Renaye’s life forever. You are all invited to the steps of the legislature to join her as she marks this anniversary for awareness for stiffer penalties for careless driving. Here Here. (Standing Ovation). The Speaker of the House said thank you and welcome to Renaye and Tammy.

From Where I Sit: Say Yes
By Hazel Anaka Most people will get through their entire lives without ever having delivered a eulogy. And they will be grateful for having dodged the bullet. Most people dread public speaking and emotionally charged situations like funerals so this combination is especially tough. Most people doubt their ability to hold it all together. They wish to avoid embarrassing themselves. Even with the Internet most people don’t have access to the words, the quotations that will ele-
vate the adequate to the memorable. Because memorable is what both the survivors and the deceased person deserve. A while ago my mom asked me to write and deliver the eulogy for her second husband and my stepfather, George. Luckily by that time I had already created the spray of flowers for the casket and was able to do it. Not that I would ever refuse such a request; because as difficult as it is, it’s also an honour and a privilege. My process is quite simple, not easy but simple. The work usually begins with a prayer. I pace through the house. Fragments of sentences begin forming in my head. I try to establish a theme or a connecting thread. I may reread previous eulogies I’ve written. I gather my books of quotations and flip to the pages marked with flags.
I scroll through documents in my computer. Finally it’s time to begin. Writer’s block is a luxury that no eulogist can afford. The challenge of capturing the essence of a life and doing it justice in five minutes of text is huge. I’ve heard some terrible eulogies and have strong opinions of what doesn’t belong. There is no need to retell, year by year, everything that happened in the life of an octogenarian. Or talk about the price of gasoline or bread when he was young. Or list every volunteer job she did in countless organizations. Or telling a funny story that isn’t. Or witnessing the miracle of death that turns a scoundrel into a saint. This is not the time for hypocrisy or hyperbole. A well written, well-delivered eulogy captivates and informs and is over too soon. Those that aren’t seem
interminable and are difficult to sit through. The document will remain open on my computer for days because inevitably I’ll be back tinkering with it. When I think it may be done I begin reading it aloud, over and over again. There is no better way to detect awkward phrasing or sections that could trip me up in the delivery. Each rehearsal makes it more likely that I will deliver it strongly and without breaking down. I time myself. The goal is being able to deliver a smooth and meaningful glimpse into the life of the deceased and bring comfort to those left behind. As hard as all this is, it’s also very rewarding when the loved ones and others thank you for a job well done. That alone is reason enough to say yes when asked, from where I sit.

Council designates deputy chief Lamont County council officially appointed Al Klassen as its deputy chief on March 10th. In Siemens request for decision, he stated: “Two years ago (2013) the county signed an employment contract with Alan Klassen to cover for my absence. This contract ended Aug. 21st of that year. This arrangement proved to be very valuable during that year as Alan assisted with many projects and attended incidents when I was not available. Mr. Klassen also was appointed as training coordinator for the county and has done a superb job in bringing all departments under one training calendar.” Chief Administrative Officer Al Harvey said the municipality has not spent a lot of money on his services, or has been a huge budget issue. The recommendation was for council to renew Klassen’s contract which pays $50 per hour and milage if using a private vehicle with no benefits, and to designate Klassen as deputy fire chief. The motion, made by coun. Roy Anaka was passed unanimously.

Fundraising continues for Bruderheim ice plant Michelle Pinon Editor Even though the Town of Bruderheim did not score any funds through the Kraft Hockeyville contest this year; people in the growing community will be continuing on in their quest for a new ice plant for their arena. “Unfortunately, we were not selected to compete in Kraft Hockeyville this year, but we are proud and thankful for the many funds raised from Kraft last year,” said Bruderheim Mayor Karl Hauch. Out of the 1,037 nominations in the 2015 nationwide contest, only 10 finalists are selected to continue on with the contest that is won and lost by the number of votes each community receives. The community, however, has and will continue to raise funds for a new ice plant. “Thus far, we have raised a total of $57,000 to date for the ice plant, and the total we need to raise is $475,000. These donations include the ICE cans at businesses in town,” stated Hauch. “Also noteworthy is that we have reached out
to our friends in business and industry for their support as well. Some of which has come in, as evidenced by donations from our friends at ATB and Prime Energy,” added Hauch. The town has also applied for a regional collaboration grant with support from Lamont County, Strathcona County, and the City of
Fort Saskatchewan. The Bruderheim Recreation and Culture Board is also organizing two upcoming fundraisers for the ice plant. On May 2nd, there will be a German themed supper and silent auction, and on May 9th, there will be a town-wide garage sale.

Kalyna Festival hits its 17th anniversary About 400 singers, dancers and musicians came to St. Michael March 7 - 10 to compete in the 17th annual Kalyna Country Festival of the Performing Arts. Participants came from Waskatenau, Two Hills, Vegreville, Irma, Lamont, Bruderheim and Fort Saskatchewan to compete in festival. Musical theatre, hand chimes, choral, voice and dance were just some of the categories that were filled with plenty of talented youth. Judy Taylor, President of the Kalyna Country Performing Arts Association, was pleased with the turn out as well as adjudicating and crowd response. Around 150 people attended the Highlights Concert, which featured the best of the best, on Sunday, March 15. The outstanding violinist was Miranda Krocker from Lamont, and outstanding pianist was Edward Haag from Two Hills, and the outstanding vocalist was Madison Widmer of Chipman. Five dancers received scholarships for their award winning performances. The winners included: Ethan Svitch and Mikalya O’Brien of the Lamont Veselka Ukrainian Dancers, Bryn Boykiw, Stephanie Taylor and Alicia Moser, all members of the Smoky Lake School of Dance. Each dancer received a $250 scholarship towards a camp of their choice. Taylor, who has been in the position of association president for the past 10 years, announced she would be stepping down from the position, however; she is confident other members will step into her role so that the festival will continue on.

Exercise Spartan Varsity was conducted at the Johsephburg Airport on Thursday, March 19th.
Exercise commemorates Operation Varsity KERRY ANDERSON Canadian soldiers were practicing pick-ups and drops of paratroopers at the Josephburg Airport on Thursday as part of exercise Spartan Varsity. The exercise commemorates Operation Varsity, which was a successful March 24,1945 WWII airborne operation involving inserting paratroop-
ers into western Germany to secure a foothold across the Rhine River. It was a three country operation which was the largest ever on a single day, and was conducted jointly by Canada, Britain and the United States. Some 16,000 paratroopers were dropped by several thousand aircraft. In Josephburg, over
100 soldiers participated in the drills from the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry. The goal was to secure the Josephburg Airfield. Among the aircraft used in Josephburg during the exercises was the original DC-3 Dakota, which flew paratroopers into Normandy during the DDay landings of June 6, 1944 during WWII.
Other aircraft that could be seen that day were; CH-146 Griffon, the CC130J Hercules, the CF-18, and the Alpha Jet. Soldiers, paratroopers, equipment and chutes were all camouflaged for their maneuvers. There was no ammuniton being used during the operation.

Andrew Archers participate in Canadian championship Michelle Pinon Editor Impressive. That was the best way to describe how archers from Andrew School felt about participating in the National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) Canadian championship held in Edmonton from March 12-14th. Teacher Greg Cruickshank said the three day event, held at the Edmonton Expo Centre had well over 1,000 archers registered from Grades 4 to 12, and from as far away as South Africa and Saskatoon.
“We entered our elementary team, and a group of individuals in junior high,” stated Cruickshank. “Our elementary team finished sixth out of 12 teams. This was impressive as it was our first official tournament,” noted Cruickshank. “Our top student was Colby Yaremie. He finished 20th overall for Grade 7. Our top elementary student was Trent Grosul, who finished 11th overall for Grade 4. Both of those grades had up to 200 competitors each!” Having 80 archers shooting at one time was very interesting, and Cruickshank was very happy with how the students performed. “The students enjoyed the feel of being in a big tournament, and they made use of their free passes to the boat and sportsman show that went along with it.” Soon the archery season will be wrapping up. On March 24th, Andrew archers will be participating in a friendly tournament in Thorhild, and Cruickshank as well as all the students are excited hit the target once again.

Young female students from Mundare School attend WISEST conference SUBMITTED ARTICLE
Four lucky Grade 6 students from Mundare School, and their teacher Adrienne Mills, attended Choices 2015 at the University of Alberta on Feb. 18th. The Choices Conference began in 1991, and now brings up to 600 Grade 6 girls together to discover the wonders of science, engineering and technology for themselves. The students spent the day at the U of A participating in science and engineering activities. The day started in a lecture theatre where they saw a banana turned into a hammer using liquid Nitrogen, homemade glow sticks, and an oscillating solution that continously changed colours once mixed. From there the girls went on to the science labs for hands on activities where they made lipbalm and attempted to bust the myth of overlap-

straws and a cup. They lifted 44 marbles with their arm! It was a fun and inspiring day.

Here’s how it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Nash told the students he wasn’t trying to change the world, but wanted to offer up his personal experiences and how those experiences and experiences on the road, had changed and shaped his life and the lives of others in a positive way. One of the songs he performed, Trouble Child, was composed by youth living on a reserve in northern Manitoba. He also showed the video of the Calgary youth who went from being suicidal in prison to emerging healthy strong and performing her personal composition with Robb in front of 22,000 people last summer in that city. In fact, Robb has heard stories, received letters, emails, and messages on his website and through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, from youth who have ripped up their suicide notes and turned over their razor blades. By the end of Robb’s presentation, students were huddled around him waiting for an autograph or selfie with the larger than life 6’5” man who is making his measure on the world one student at a time.
