Dangerous Skaro wildfire continues to burn Michelle Pinon Editor
The danger is far from over, and county officials say the Skaro Wildfire cannot be extinguished at this time. Randy Siemens, Lamont County Fire Chief and Emergency Services Coordinator, told members of council Tuesday to expect more phone calls from residents as the smoldering and flare-ups continue to occur on a regular basis. “We can cut it off where it’s burning, but we can’t put the fire out,” stated Siemens. “The peat beds are not going out, so we’re setting up a whole new game plan.” Siemens said there are a myriad of peat beds throughout the area that are impervious to water, and continue to burn. The peat beds can be anywhere from one to three feet deep. He described the peat moss as tentacles which continue to grow and stretch
for miles in the hollows. Siemens said they will have to continue trenching the peat beds, and create gaps deep down in the soil, and fill them with sand so that any precipitation can be channeled through there, to eventually penetrate the peat beds far down below the surface. For weeks the county has been putting its resources into tilling. “In a normal year that wouldn’t burn,” said Coun. Robert Malicia. “No, they wouldn’t,” replied Siemens. “The strategy really is to mark out where we can make breaks, because the places we thought were out, are not.” Every single day since the fire started on April 18, is costing $35,000 dollars a day. “We hope to recover 75 per cent of the costs by the province,” stated Siemens. The question raised was how many contractors to keep working and how many to stay on stand by. “If
if need be. It was also pointed out that they can’t clear right of ways because the bush is still smoldering. There was also discussion regarding a resident who phoned dispatch because of a flare-up last week, but refused to make their identity or location known, which delayed firefighters coming on to the scene for a couple of hours, which added to the frustration
you let them go, they’re gone,” pointed out Deputy Reeve Dan Warawa. Siemens said it might be a better idea to keep the contractors working instead of staying on stand by. “Your not going to stop it,” insisted Coun. Roy Bryks, who used the Mariana Lakes fire as a good example. “We are 20 square miles,” pointed out Siemens. “Some of it you have to let it burn. Unless you get torrential rains, you have to hire someone to keep watch,” added Coun. Malica. Siemens said they had extinguished most of the fence lines, but because of the hot temperatures, possibility of the soil collapsing, and falling trees, he did not recommend that producers attempt to re-fence right away, and those who have no choice for their cattle or horses to use metal posts or set up temporary electrical fence that can be moved from area to area
McMurray during the most recent crisis. Siemens said he would reassess the situation, and report back to council in a week or two. “Maybe we’ll have to hold a special meeting?” asked Warawa, who thanked the fire chief for his verbal update and current photos that were displayed during the presentation.

A four day donation drive at the Lamont Health Care Centre resulted in around 40 boxes of food, water, clothing, baby supplies, and linens for evacuees of the Fort McMurray wildfire. Pamela Mandryk, who organized the donation blitz, was very impressed with the amount and variety of household supplies that were donated by staff, residents, and family members. “I was just hoping for a good outcome,” says Mandryk, who had to keep collecting and itemizing the donations, so they would be organized come delivery day. “The doctors’ office donated baby formula,” noted Mandryk. There were also a good amount of towels, sheets, and linen bags, as well as toiletries, toys, socks, underwear, bras, school supplies and activity books, cat, dog and horse food, bottled water, and gift cards. Throughout the week, Mandryk says people kept coming up to her and asking: “Can I still bring?” She was very touched by how many people wanted to help out, and kept telling them, “Whatever you can give.” The disaster relief drive was extremely heartwarming, and recipients will soon be putting the items to good use.

Fundraising barbecue for displaced Ft. Mac residents successful Michelle Pinon Editor
A fundraising barbecue for displaced Fort McMurray residents staying in Lamont was a great success, say organizers. “We had a great outpour of support from the community,” said Jennifer Taylor, who helped organize the event along with Jodie Derksen and Rob Thrower. Around 150 people gathered at Hillside Park last Tuesday for burgers, hotdogs, and potato salad. “Nick and I, along with Jodie and Rob, spent all day Monday promoting and collecting donations for the event. We are thrilled with the outcome. “We wanted to do something to give back to the Fort McMurray evacuees that were staying in the area.” The Lamont Fire
Department supplied a truck, while members of the Village of Chipman Fire Department supplied the grill. Also, pitching in the fundraising effort was Maurice Lafontaine, who sold Alberta Strong vehicle decals, and Jessie Vincent from Healing Touch Massage who sold massages for donations.
Lamont Fire Department members Andrew McDonald and Mylissa Greening brought the fire department truck. All of the monetary donations were exchanged into gift cards so proceeds would go
directly into the hands of the people that need it most, added Jennifer. She went on to say that they will be going to deliver the gift cards to the evacuees. “We learned that there is one woman staying locally in Lamont that is due to have her baby any day, so we want to make sure that she, along with all of the other people staying here are able to get the items they need. Fort McMurray evacuees were very overwhelmed with the outpouring of support from our small community.” Members of the Bruderheim Seniors Centre also held a successful fundraising barbecue on Saturday, serving up about 100 hot dogs and hamburgers. The seniors will be hosting another fundraising barbecue on June 18 from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Lamont County Food Bank assists in local relief effort Michelle Pinon Editor
The Lamont County Food Bank has been kept busy in recent weeks, assisting with the emergency fire relief effort in the region by donating food as well as personal care products to relief centres in Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton. “We donated personal care products and food to Bruderheim, where several Fort McMurray families have relocated,” said Betty Sheptycki, chair of the food bank board. “We have also followed the example set by other food banks around the province, and have made a financial contribution that is within our means, and represents a
donation suitable to the size of our food bank,” added Sheptycki. She went on to say, “As the crisis in the north has unfolded, Alberta Food Banks have all understood that we can help, and in fact, we have a responsibility to do so, and give back to the broader community that has supported all of us.” The Lamont County Food Bank is a member of the Alberta Food Bank network, and as such, has benefitted directly from the experience and wisdom of other food banks around the province, pointed out Sheptycki. “We also receive, on a regular basis, food donations from Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, and Edmonton food banks. On May 7, Alberta
Food Banks launched an emergency food drive so that people could easily donate the food needed to support the victims of the Fort McMurray wildfire. Visit www.FeedAlberta.com to purchase food that you want to donate. “The food will be delivered on your behalf directly to the food banks that are providing support to the displaced residents,” stated Stephanie Rigby, Executive Director of Alberta Food Banks. “We are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of compassion and support for these food banks. This online campaign will ensure we have a steady supply of food to share with them and Fort McMurray,” pointed out Rigby.

Opinion Letter: Unite the Right activist speaks out To the Editor: Unite the Right: It’s not about math, it’s about PRINCIPLE. As the clouds continue to darken over the Alberta economy, it becomes increasingly clear that the Rachel Notley government is more likely to remain part of the problem than become part of the solution. But what are we doing to fix it? Many in Alberta believe that replacing the NDP and restoring the Alberta Advantage is as simple as ‘Uniting the Right’. Yet while that project remains mired in partisan bickering there’s a deeper problem. Before we can ‘Unite the Right’ we must agree on what ‘Right’ means. Being from the Left means, broadly speaking, being
folks who agree that government knows best how we should all live our lives and the size and cost of the state is simply a reasonable price we pay to benefit from its benevolent wisdom. Let’s call them ‘progressives’. Being from the Right means folks that believe that individuals know best how they should live their own lives and every increase in the size and cost of government is an intrusion on our individual freedom and a burden on our lives. Let’s call them ‘conservatives’. Being ‘less progressive’ than the NDP does not make you a ‘conservative’. It can simply mean you have differences with your fellow progressives on how exactly the state should go about improv-
ing our lives, and how quickly it’s safe to make it bigger. And in the 2019 election Albertans will have to choose whether the progressives in the NDP, the progressives in other parties, or genuine conservatives are most likely to bring back the ‘Alberta Advantage’. The reason the Wildrose party exists is because the PCAA became more progressive than conservative. The provincial Tories led us to a high cost, government knows best, health care, education and public service. If you are an Albertan happy with the service and high cost of all three, you are either a progressive or someone whose expectations have been driven down by years of bad government. In the former case
you might as well join the NDP who already have power. If you’re the latter, you should expect better of our government. If you’re already conservative, or if you do start believing we can do better and bring back the Alberta Advantage, many of your views are already being espoused by Alberta’s Official Opposition, the Wildrose Party, who started pointing out Alberta’s costly and economically dangerous experiment with progressivism almost a decade ago. Last weekend, April 30, four or five hundred Albertans, all of whom are sincerely concerned about Alberta’s future, met in Red Deer at an “Alberta Can’t Wait” event. I was there and the main theme of the
meeting was that “the future of our province is more important than any one party”! I agreed, it was virtually a unanimous sentiment. However, I believe that the conclusion that the meeting arrived at contradicted that very theme. It was: ‘Let’s start our own party!’ Uniting the right is a noble idea. But remember that federally it took from 1987 till 2011 to form a ‘new united majority conservative government’! Do you want another 25 years of Rachel Notley and her colleagues? The Wildrose may not be perfect. But it is Alberta’s official opposition, it has a long history of opposing big, arrogant government regardless of party, and if you want to be certain of

replacing Rachel Notley in 2019 and bringing back the Alberta Advantage, join the party. If you are not happy with some Wildrose policy, join and change it. If you are not happy with the Executive, join and change it. If you are not happy with the Leader, join and change him. Above all, understand that regaining the Alberta Advantage is not a matter of uniting the right, it is a matter of being ‘Right’. So take a hard look at Wildrose and ask yourself: Isn’t it already mostly there? Danny Hozack Lloydminster Chairman: Economic Education Association

Vicious dog attacks children in Vegreville SUBMITTED ARTICLE On Thursday May 5, at 5:45pm the Vegreville RCMP responded to a complaint that a child had been bitten by a dog at a residence in Vegreville. Upon arrival RCMP members were directed to the rear of the residence where they located two small children suffering from serious facial wounds consistent with being bitten by a dog.
At the time of the attack the animal in question was unknown to the victims. Both children were transported to the hospital by EMS personnel with one child subsequently needing to be transported to the Stollery Children’s Hospital for further medical attention. The RCMP have seized the dog and it is currently being held for further observation.
The Vegreville RCMP have partnered with local municipal bylaw officers as well as Alberta Health Services for this investigation, and an application will be made in Provincial Court to determine the fate of the animal. The RCMP applauds the courage of both children and are happy to report that both are doing as well as can be expected following this traumatic event.

Local firefighters raising funds for MS Michelle Pinon Editor
Ten local firefighters will be strapping on their turnout gear to support the MS Walk fundraiser. “We have seven Lamont firefighters, one Bruderheim firefighter and two Fort Saskatchewan firefighters walking with the group from Darrell’s Divas and Dudes,” says Scott Calder. “Darrell was my neighbour and a firefighter in Bruderheim when I was growing up. I feel honoured to be walking with him as he battles MS.” The contingent of firefighters will be supporting heavy turn out gear and wearing breathing apparatuses during the MS Walk that will be held on Sunday, May 29 at Rossdale Community Field in Edmonton. Darrell’s wife Jackie stated in an online link that Darrell was diagnosed with primary pro-
gressive MS in 2014. “With the support and information the MS Society has provided my husband and I, we are now educated and feel confident in the future.” She went on to say, “I have made it a goal to do everything I can to help support, bring awareness to the illness, and raise funds to aid research, advocacy and programs it delivers to those affected.” According to statistics, every day three Canadians are diagnosed
with multiple sclerosis. It is an unpredictable illness that affects vision, balance, memory and mobility and affects individuals differently. There is no cause or cure, but all funds raised will go towards financial assistance for special equipment and home care, supportive counselling for all those affected by MS, self-help groups and recreational programs for people with MS, and government advocacy for people living with MS.

Motel 6 construction right on target Michelle Pinon Editor
Officials with the Town of Bruderheim as well as the regional economic director got a sneak peak of Suite 6 of the Motel 6 in Bruderheim on Wednesday, May 4. The four storey hotel, which is nearly three quarters complete, will have a total of 63 modular suites. Don Klisowsky, President of Ladacor, the
Calgary based company which designed and is currently installing the steel modular system, is anticipating opening the doors in July. Hotel owner Boris Javorski will be hosting a Job Fair in the near future, with details of the date, time and location to be announced. The $6 million project was first introduced to the public back on June 18, 2015 during a special open house at the
Bruderheim Memorial Centre. A total of 24 people attended that event, in which plans for the unique development were unveiled. In terms of amenities, all of the suites will be equipped with kitchenettes. There will be a lounge area as well as a breakfast room for guests to enjoy. The official sod turning ceremony for the hotel was held on Sept. 23, 2015.
Mayor Karl Hauch has been keeping a close on construction during the build, and previously stated that: “There is a need in the community for more varied housing, as evidenced by the number of folks working in our region and living in their RV’s.” He added that the hotel will also be a boon to other businesses which are operating in the community.

Installation of the modular suites continues on, and is about 3/4ʼs complete to date.

MAY 15 THRU 21, 2016 National Police Week began in Canada in 1970 as a way to connect with communities and increase awareness about the services that police provide. During National Police Week, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recognizes the important role that police play in the safety and security of Canadians, at
home and abroad. This year, to highlight National Police Week, the RCMP is participating in a number of public events and activities. Through their Twitter account they would like to show you what some of their officers do, so throughout the globe; they're taking selfies for you! Go to #RCMPSelfie to see the photos. And on this

page, you will also find some articles that discuss some outof-the-norm initiatives that the RCMP engages in, all to support our communities. This week, many detachments across our nation will be celebrating National Police Week; they will be going out into their communities, participating in events, and highlighting the amazing work
that they do. May 17 & 18 - The local RCMP will be at the Fort Saskatchewan Historical Society’s Peoples of the North Saskatchewan event with interactive displays for the public. Check with your local detachment to find out more events during National Police Week.
