Police find stolen goods, Forestburg embarks on a novel meth and weapons in Killam grassroots campaign for growth Leslie Cholowsky Editor

What started with a stolen vehicle in Tofield ended with the arrest of three suspects in Killam on Friday, Aug. 31, with RCMP from the Central Alberta Rural Crime Reduction Unit, Eastern Alberta Rural Crime Reduction Unit, Wetaskiwin General Investigation Services, K-Division Air units, Police Dog Services, and Killam RCMP members all working together. Three individuals were arrested after three warrants were issued, with a total of 83 charges laid by police. Three stolen vehicles were recovered, as well as five firearms from a Killam residence after a search warrant was executed. After a vehicle was reported stolen in Tofield, police were led to Camrose, then Wetaskiwin following the stolen vehicle. This led to the discovery of two other

stolen vehicles, and two men were identified as suspects. Upon the execution of a search warrant on the Killam residence, police found a significant quantity of stolen items, five prohibited weapons, and a quantity of methamphetamines sufficient for trafficking. A total of 83 charges were laid against two males and one female. The two males were released after a judicial interim release hearing was held. Stephane LeClerc, 50, of Edmonton, was released on a $750 cash bond; Robert Bricker, 34, of Killam was released on $3,500 no-cash recognizance, and Shyla Good (31) of Paintearth County was remanded into custody. Corporal Trent Cleveland, Acting Commander of the Killam RCMP Detachment, says that the incident represents a significant effort from four police units, and continues with many hours of work that doesn’t stop at the arrests.

Forestburg introduced some new incentives over the summer, designed to reward residents and encourage new business and new families to the village. Residents and business owners can earn tangible cash incentives, either on their utility or tax accounts, by issuing an invitation to other families or businesses. By successfully encouraging a new business to relocate to or start up in Forestburg with at least two employees, or a new family (of at least two) to purchase an existing house or build in Forestburg, residents can earn up to $2,000 off their property tax or utilities. There are some minor conditions to be met, and Council must approve each Funded by the Government of Canada

Scarecrow Festival great fun in Killam Leslie Cholowsky Editor

For those who took in the start of Killam’s September Scarecrow Festival, free hot dogs, vendors, displays, and family games were the highlights of the day on Saturday, Sept. 3. The sun prevailed as families checked out Scarecrow Park on Main Street Killam, with vendors, games, and displays, including the Flagstaff Carving Club. There was even a pie contest, with Joyce Logue taking home the prize for her baking prowess. Organizers were very pleased with the turnout, with over 100 people attending. The sum of $222.20 was raised through a silver collection and prize pie slice sales for the Flagstaff Food Bank. The Scarecrow Festival will continue to the end of September, with residents and businesses encouraged to put their best scarecrow forward by the end of the month. Entries will be judged Sept. 30 and prizes issued to the best entries!

Killam Campus of Caring grand opening next Thursday Ally Anderson Killam News

Howdy my fellow Killamites. Mother Nature has done it again. Another day full of gloom and pouring rain. I hear from a few peo-

ple that overnight on Monday/Tuesday they got so much rain it was washing out their driveways or roads. Others reported a late Saturday/early Sunday storm produced buckets of rain, which we can attest to.

Even with the gloomy weather, I have seen so many farmers out in the fields. Hopefully harvest goes as smooth as possible so there is as little stress as possible. Were you at the Scarecrow Festival on Saturday? It was a good crowd

who was out to enjoy a rather beautiful day with many vendors and activities for kids. Thank you to those who set up and helped organize the day. I know many appreciated it! I keep getting confused as to when we fall back.

CHSPS greenlit to return to full classes at ‘Camp Sedgewick’ Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Central High Sedgewick Public School (CHSPS) staff, administration, and Battle River School Division (BRSD) staff have been working feverishly to have Camp Sedgewick, as they have nicknamed their new school space, up and running for their target date of Wednesday, Sept. 11. All the units are on site, and crews were working last week to connect heat and power to each. Staff were able to access their classrooms starting Monday, Sept. 9, to prepare for students. A final inspection was scheduled for

Tuesday morning, and CHSPS Principal William Klassen advised parents that until then, administration is unable to give confirmation of Wednesday’s back to school status. High School students returned to their studies on Sept. 3 at the Wild Rose Co-op Rec. Centre, with a limited schedule that includes core subjects only. The classrooms passed inspection on Tuesday, Sept. 10, and all students will return to classes using the portables at ‘Camp Sedgewick, Wednesday. Meanwhile an army of contractors and BRSD employees continue to work on the school to get it up and running as soon as possible.

PHOTOS COURTESY BRSD

Camp Sedgewick is ready for students to return on Wednesday, Sept. 11 or once the temporary accommodations pass inspection. Contractors were working steadily over the last few weeks moving in the portables, and hooking up heat and power. Teachers gained access to their classrooms on Monday, Sept 9 to begin preparations for students.

Opinion

Hon. Kevin Sorenson, M.P.,

Bribes work in Canada, just ask voters There is something severely wrong with Canada’s election process when the incumbent Prime Minister and his party can start their unofficial re-election campaign months before actually declaring the election - and do it with our tax money instead of their own party money. This isn’t just unique to the Liberal Party, former PM Stephen Harper’s Conservatives made 604 announcements worth $1.4 billion in the month prior to calling the 2015 election. However, comparing Harper giveaways to Trudeau is like trying to equate the little leagues to Major League Baseball. Last week alone the Trudeau Liberals made 330 spending commitments worth $2.85 billion, doubling Stephen Harper’s whole pre-election promises in a single week. The week prior to that, Liberal MPs made 595 commitments worth $4.9 billion. To sum it up, the Liberal government had, in the two weeks prior to Aug. 25, committed to 925 projects worth $7.75 billion if they are re-elected. In other words in half the time frame, they have committed 550 percent more money than the whole Harper promise campaign and Trudeau still has until Sept. 15 to call the election. At the risk of being redundant, it is pretty obvious that the shine is off Trudeau’s “sunny ways.” People don’t have to think back far to the PM’s international embarrassments like playing Mr. Dress-up in India, conflicts with US President Trump, and clashes with China, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia. His real issues though, may have began when after hiring women and minorities as part of a plan to have a gender-balanced multi-cultural cabinet, some of those same ministers have now resigned because of the very same Prime Minister who originally hired them. Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould, Trudeau’s highest ranking aboriginal female minister quit, stating that the PM was pressuring her to reduce criminal charges against Quebec-based SNC-Lavalin - an engineering firm with global political connections. Several others have since quit, including the former Attorney General’s friend and cabinet minister Jane Philpott. Yet despite all of PM Trudeau’s bunglings, his pre-election commitments mostly in Ontario, Quebec, and BC seem to have secured his position as the favourite to being re-elected in the October federal elections. Those provinces hold 241 of the country’s 338 seats in Parliament and according to recent studies Trudeau is leading in Ontario by 12 percentage points and has even moved in front in Quebec. British Columbia, which elected 17 Liberals in 2015 has also been a target of Trudeau promises. Since July 1, the Trudeau Liberals have made 59 separate BC spending announcements worth $2.1 billion or well over $30 million per day just in BC. Although Canadian provinces have moved to Conservative politics in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, PEI, Nova Scotia and even Quebec, it may still be hard to hold off Trudeau’s re-election bid. He earned 137 seats in Quebec, Ontario and BC in 2015, leaving only 32 seats needed for a majority throughout the rest of the country if he can just retain. With the amount of our money he is spending on those provinces, he may well have bribed his way back for a chance at a second term. KERRY ANDERSON

Battle River-Crowfoot

Goodbye and thank you It is with a very heavy heart that I write the last column of my 19-year career as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Battle River-Crowfoot. Since first being elected in 2000, I have been submitting my bi-weekly column to all local weekly newspapers. I am extremely grateful to those papers who consistently ran the column which allowed me to regularly connect with my constituents. I thank each of you for giving me the opportunity to circulate important information and provide critiques on government legislation and polices, the economic well-being of the country or international affairs. I have endeavoured to continually provide timely facts and figures which I believe is crucial for constituents be informed about the state of federal affairs. Early on in my Parliamentary career, I learned that I needed to reach out to constituents through various means and as often as possible. While nothing can replace the importance and pleasure of meeting with constituents in person at community events or in my constituency office; columns, quarterly Reports from Parliament, letters, emails, telephone calls, and in later years, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter postings, have led to a vital exchange of ideas, and information between the residents of Battle River-Crowfoot and me. Without that dialogue, I could not have adequately represented the views of my constituents in Ottawa which is the most important part of being a MP in a democratic country such as Canada. To the best of my ability, I ensured this constituency’s voice was heard in the Nation’s Capital. In some cases, the views of Battle River-Crowfoot residents were at odds with other parts of the country.

SUBSCRIPTION REQUEST FORM

While this was not surprising, it was rather alarming that those views were not always respected. I have always fully recognized and respected the fact that there is always going to be divergent views on a multitude of issues. And, I have appreciated that others are every bit as passionate as I in defending their position. I however, unlike members of the Liberal government, have never chastised anyone for stating their beliefs as I also respect our Constitutional right to Freedom of Speech (and thought). In the wake of one Liberal Minister’s recent public rebuke of a point of view on an issue of importance to many people, I received an overwhelming number of letters, emails and phone calls. One constituent wrote, “coming under attack for such beliefs shows that the Liberal government does not believe in true free speech, but instead a freedom of speech where you can believe and say what you like, as long as it corresponds with Liberal policies and mindsets.” As I say good-bye and thank you for the honour of representing you for close to two decades, I leave you with the most important lesson I have learned: you may disagree with another’s position or point of view; you may passionately debate the merits of your point of view; but at the end of the argument, you should always respect the other person. This is a very big and diverse country where everyone is entitled to their opinions and they are entitled to state their position without fear of reprisal or condemnation. If you have any questions or concerns regarding this or previous columns you may write me at 4945-50th Street, Camrose, Alberta, T4V 1P9, call 780-6084600, toll-free 1-800-665-4358, fax 780608-4603 or e-mail Kevin.Sorenson.c1@parl.gc.ca.

Busy week for RCMP - multiple break-ins at local businesses Leslie Cholowsky Editor

The Killam RCMP Detachment members responded to 60 occurrences during the period of Aug. 28 to Sept. 4. Members responded to a 911 call from Amisk. New policies have members responding to every 911 call traced to a physical location to inspect the premises. A complaint of an abandoned vehicle was discovered to be left while the owner was at work. RCMP were called to assist Emergency Medical Services at the scene of a two-vehicle collision on Highway 13 near Lougheed. No series injuries were reported, but neither vehicle was driveable after the incident. An investigation into the cause is ongoing. Three complaints of Breach of the Peace were made to police. Two in Daysland involved loud, stunting motor vehicles, and members attended at Lougheed to find a family dispute; no charges were laid. RCMP are investigating four complaints of break and enter to businesses, two in Forestburg, one in Daysland, and one in Alliance. In Forestburg, a store was broken into with nothing stolen, but damages to the building. A second business property was broken into with property stolen. In Daysland, the Golf Course experienced a break in, with nothing reported stolen. In Alliance, a break in to a business was reported, and is under investigation. Members responded to a complaint of failure to remain at the scene of an accident. The inci-

dent was resolved when it was determined that a piece of farm equipment had damaged telephone poles. Members responded to one false alarm during this period. A flight from police is linked to a serious assault in Forestburg reported separately. A report of fraudulent cheques in Forestburg is presently being investigated by RCMP. Police received information from the general public regarding suspected criminal activity which is being followed up on. RCMP responded to two Mental Health Act calls, in both instances individuals were taken to mental health facilities for evaluation. Four mischief complaints were made to police during the week. In Forestburg, members dealt with complaints

of loud music. In Daysland, a vehicle carved tracks into a fairway at the golf course, and damaged some tee boxes. Police are investigating. Also in Daysland, a storage facility was damaged. In Hardisty, the Home Hardware experienced damage from a possible attempted break in. RCMP recovered a stolen trailer in the Daysland area, the unit had been taken from Wainwright. It was recovered with no damages, abandoned. A complaint from the public regarding a potential impaired driver was investigated. Police caught up to the vehicle, and the driver tested, who blew zero. RCMP dealt with three provincial statute complaints, one an ongoing neighbour dispute, and two

tenant/landlord issues where mediation was provided. Members responded to a complaint of the attempted theft of a camper trailer in Sedgewick and are investigating. Members are also investigating the theft of an RV from a residence in Forestburg. A licence plate stolen in the area was recovered in Calgary and returned to the owner. Members investigated 13 calls of suspicious vehicles or

individuals. Police received a complaint of a bicycle stolen from the front yard of a residence in Killam. Two trucks were reported stolen during this period, one from the Forestburg area and one from rural Flagstaff, with the second vehicle recovered the same day. Six traffic collisions were reported, with property damage but no or minor injuries. An investigation is ongoing into a complaint of threats being

uttered by telephone. RCMP were asked to perform three wellbeing checks on individuals during this period, all were fine. Sedgewick student shares her work experience in agriculture Sandra Erickson Ph: 780-384-2030

Sedgewick email: sedgewicknews@gmail.com

It seems to me as things have slowed down a little while transitioning from summer back into a routine. So I asked Tianna Johnson to share about her summer experience, as she's been gone for the entire two months down to Champion to work on a horse farm and gain experience in agriculture related jobs to help her decide on a post secondary path. After carefully reviewing each of her options, Tianna decided on Fleetwood Farms. Fleetwood Farms is a large quarter horse breeding ranch located near Champion. Their breeding program is based off of excellently bred equines, being both current and past stallions, and a variety of carefully selected mares. The goal is simple: to breed the best mares to the best stallions based on the strengths and weaknesses of the horses. The internship Tianna took up is a non-paid learning opportunity for the true equine enthusiast who wishes to take their horsemanship to the next level. It is live-in at the ranch and interns are there from April to October every year. This job has helped Tianna excel in her education with horses. She has learned a great deal involving breeding, including stallion handling, semen collection, artificial insemination, detecting heat cycles, ultra sounding, colour genetics, and equine behaviour in different settings. Aside from the science involved in equine reproduction, Fleetwood Farms make sure to always have daily sessions with foals who all end up halterbroke, picking up their feet and loading them into trailers. Interacting with the foals and watching them improve and learn was definitely one of Tianna's favourite parts of this internship. Along with training young horses, they started a few of their two-yearolds under saddle near the end of the summer. Working at Fleetwood Farms has taught the 17-year-old

many things about horses; she also learned how rewarding hard work can be, which is one of the most valuable lessons thus far. Her experience at Fleetwood Farms has been an excellent, one-of-a-kind, educational one that she would recommend to anyone who has a hunger for education and is fascinated by the art of humanequine interaction and behaviour. She owes a big thank you to Ryan and Brandy Fleetwood, Amber Lebel, and Rebecca Svanera of Fleetwood Farms for coaching her through and helping her improve her horsemanship skills. If you are looking to further your education with horses, to purchase your next performance horse, or to even breed your own mare, you can contact Fleetwood Farms Quarter Horses. “The thing about horsemanship is that you never stop learning. You are always encountering different horses and always learning new things” Ryan Fleetwood said. Tianna is now back for

her final year of high school at Central High Sedgewick Public School and when I saw her, she looked happy and excited to talk about her summer learning experience. The Flagstaff Community Adult Learning Centre (FCAL) invites you to their kick off to learning supper on Sept. 11 at the Community Church of the Nazarene. Their new brochure with the fall classes should have been sent to your mailbox by now. As always, FCAL offers a wide variety of courses; something for everyone. The Building Blocks program will resume in October, but if you are

interested you can call them and register so they have enough books and supplies for all attending families. It's completely free to attend and in home sessions are available as well; next to the group sessions all over Flagstaff County. It's a great way to meet other parents, get resources, and have interactive playtime with your children aged five or younger. Many Flagstaff equestrians look forward to Cointreau Fall Classic More than a few young Flagstaff riders took part in the Cointreau Stables Fall Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7. It was an opportunity for riders of all ages to show off what they’ve learned, as well as their control and skill in riding and for the more experienced riders, jumping. Horse shows have their own lingo, or language, with terms like dressage, where horse and rider perform pre-

determined movements; and hunters, judging the skill and posture of the rider; and also jumpers, objectively

judged based on the ability to run a course through a series of obstacles, gates, or fences without faults.

Flagstaff County Council votes to consider three vital community programs in 2020 budget Leslie Cholowsky Editor

At their Aug. 14 meeting, Flagstaff County Council received delegations from three community programs operating in Flagstaff County: the Flagstaff Family Day Home Society; Parents for Fun in Flagstaff; and the Welcoming Community Project operated by Flagstaff Community Adult Learning (FCAL). Each of the three have received county funding in the past, and each made a presentation for Council to consider continuing that funding into their next budget. Flagstaff Family Day Home Society made the first presentation to Council, with Shelby Haesloop, Program Coordinator, giving Council an overview of the organization, as well as their goals for the future, and budget consideration. Haesloop told Council that one of the challenges the group faces for funding is that they are ineligible for casino funds because the day home providers are contractors, not employees. Haesloop said the group does do fundraising beyond the monies received from Flagstaff County. ($50,000 in 2013-14-15; $50,000 for 2016-17-18; and $17,000 for 2019) For the first time this year, Haesloop says, the group tracked rural families, and found that over half of the 40 families who use the day homes are from rural Flagstaff. Haesloop says the region is in dire need of child care, adding, “We need to

recruit well-educated providers rurally.” She told Council that providers have fallen from a high of seven in fall 2018 to five currently, when two providers moved out of the region. Haesloop says the advantage for Day Home providers over independent contractors is the support the Society can provide, including professional development and education opportunities, family and child events, field trips, and social contacts, and partnerships with other local groups to bring programming to the children in their care. Haesloop asked Council to consider an increase to a three year commitment of $64,744 to achieve many of the Society’s goals to expand and enhance their program, and to meet the child care needs in the region. She presented a number of positive testimonials from providers who both credited Flagstaff County with being vital to the program and its survival. After her presentation, Haesloop fielded questions and comments from Council. Reeve Don Kroetch said, “This funding goes directly to capacity building. The team building aspect that the Society provides is really important. This program ticks a lot of boxes for us, regarding building capacity and resilience.” Haesloop replied, “We remove the isolation factor and provide support for our caregivers, along with a platform to share ideas and challenges.” Haesloop explained how the Society is looking to reward those providers

who continue education and accreditation levels financially. Next to present was Parents for Fun in Flagstaff, represented by Program Coordinator Jessica Docksteader and board member Cherise Backen. Flagstaff County has funded the Society’s Family Resource Centre since 2013, contributing $25,000 per year from 2013 to 2109, with an additional $14,820 in 2014 for an addition to the play structure. Docksteader said the group broke their user stats from January to June 2019 down into communities, and they, too, found that over half their local users are rural. Statistics showed users coming out of Beaver County, Camrose County, and other communities outside the region on a regular basis. Docksteader said the facility’s Mom’s Group consistently brings people in to Flagstaff County. She says programming is constantly changing, trying to stay fresh to continue to attract existing and new families into the facility. Docksteader said the group is continually looking for other grant funding, too, and this year will do two major fundraisers, including the tenth Movie in the Park, and a Ladies Night coming in the fall. She indicated that the group will be approaching other municipalities in the region, and advised that Killam provides a lot of in-kind support within the facility, located in the Agriplex. Docksteader says that it is important to the Society to keep user fees low, and to offer consistent programs and serv-

ices to parents, as well as to continue to partner with local organizations. She said the group has been organizing a new program guide to highlight programs and services available to families throughout Flagstaff County. “We are trying to pull together what everyone is doing and put it out there. “People are willing to travel, let’s have them travel within Flagstaff.” Docksteader added, “I don’t know another community that does so much to support early childhood development.” Kroetch commented, “It’s great to see the numbers you are bringing in to Flagstaff; it benefits all. It helps with citizen retention, too.” Docksteader and Backen talked to Council about their collaboration with Flagstaff Beaver Early Childhood Coalition, whose mandate is to promote the healthy development of children 0 to five years of age, as well as to facilitate and promote Early Childhood Development (ECD) opportunities within the entire region, including increasing the awareness of programs, and building partnerships that meet the needs of the communities. Councillor Erik Skoberg asked if there was any opportunity to share administration with this group to save on operating costs, to which Docksteader responded, “The administration work is so time consuming. Half my time is connecting with families and groups.” She pointed to a similar play facility in Viking that doesn’t have programming or administration. “You can see the diff See PROGRAMS P21

Scarecrow Festival attracts new residents to Killam

Daily Crow Star Reporter Daisy Dolittle We’ve welcomed a new face at The Community Press, as Daisy Dolittle has joined us. Dolittle is the star reporter at the infamous Daily Crow, and will be with us to report on the influx of strange visitors to Killam, expected to continue until around Sept. 30. “You never know where they’ll pop up,” she says, “but I’ll be ready!”

Saturday, Sept. 7 marked the kickoff of Killam’s Scarecrow Festival, with an outdoor market that included lots of things for visitors to do. Coverage of that event can be found on Page X. Organizers say that the event has attracted some unusual visitors perched in the unlikeliest of places, and more are expected right through to the end of September. I, Reporter Daisy Dolittle, have attempted to talk to the newcomers, but they are pretty tight-lipped. You’d think their lips were sewn together, or just drawn on for all the good they do. For the most part, the visitors seem friendly, with smiles painted on their faces at all times. “They do seem friendly,” says Mayor Ben Kellert, “but awfully inclined to loiter about.” He says he’s all about welcoming newcomers to town, and hopes the visitors will attract even more people. He’s pleased that the visitors seem friendly despite their reticence to chit-chat with locals, and is happy they’re keeping out of trouble so far. He’s not sure about the fellow over at the Wagon Wheel, but says we often get hunters from out of town in the region. “Yeah, that’s probably what’s going on.” Stay tuned as I dig up more news, there are rumours of some kind of treasure or prize that could attract even more strawnge visitors by Sept. 30!

The Battle River Community Foundation (BRCF) recently awarded grants to the Town of Hardisty for cemetery upkeep and maintenance. The grants are from income from funds created by donors to support cemetery operations in the town, including the Lou and Charlotte Golka Fund, the Joe Kost Memorial Fund, and the Darell and Winnie Goodrich Memorial Fund, generating $3,750 for the cemetery.

I was determined to arrive for church on time this week, so I left home 15 minutes earlier than last time. To me, Sunday mornings have a special feeling left over from my childhood long ago, when the sabbath was a sacred day. As I drove up the hill towards our little chapel, I wished there was an old church bell calling the faithful to worship. 780-889-2113

Hello everyone, did you all enjoy the nice few days of weather we had last week? Everyone is hoping it will change for the better after the equinox which I'm told is on Sept 21. We are still pretty lucky we did not have the downpour that some areas got, I talked to a fellow from Camrose and he says it's pouring there, at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning. Maybe we'll see the sun in the evening. Does anyone want any apples or crabapples just for the picking? I have lots of crabs so if you want to come and pick you are welcome. I picked my tomatoes yesterday; didn't want to

take the chance we might get frost, one never knows. Baptized on Aug. 31 at St Martin’s Church in Heisler was little Corwin Badry, son of Matthew and Ingrid Badry, with Rev Fr. Carlos Nunez officiating. Visiting with the family were Shari-Anne Doolaege, Rachel Fischer and family, and Annette Holst and family. Proud Grandparents Gerard and Lorraine Badry and John and Corry Buyks of Innisfail were also present. Proud godparents are Wade and Annette Holst. Snacks and cake were enjoyed by everyone after mass. Visiting with Pat Smith and Rob was her daughter Kelly of Cold Lake. While here, Kelly did some renovations, etc. returning to Cold Lake on Monday. On Monday the St. Martin’s CWL held their first fall meeting with a good attendance.

We are once again looking forward to our Annual Sausage supper the last Sunday in October. We are happy to announce our beautiful quilt for the sausage supper raffle will be on display at ATB in Heisler starting this week. Come and have a look and buy a ticket or two or three. Birthday greetings to: Steven Bendfeld. Killam Hospital Foundation fundraiser last push before construction Leslie Cholowsky Editor After years of waiting, the Campus of Caring is taking shape at Killam Long Term Care, and the Killam Hospital Foundation Board of Directors is working hard to ensure funds are in place to meet the needs of furnishing and equipping new rooms and common areas as soon as construction is complete. The board has hosted a number of fundraising events over the past few years, since the announcement for the expansion was made, and are now in the push to ensure that when phase one of construction is complete, residents can enjoy furnished and functional common areas, dining rooms, and outdoor spaces. In 2012, the board announced its goal to raise $1 million to furnish the new space. “It isn’t as simple as just building a building,” confirmed Geri Clark, Executive Director of the Killam Health Care Centre at that time. Subsequent fundraising events from the board in the past few years have provided funds to allow the purchase of some of the furnishings that will be needed, but as plans change or get finalized, more things are needed. Current board chair Sharleen Chevraux says the board has applied for a grant for the purchase of televisions for all 40 rooms. “Of course we don’t know if we will get the funds, but we’ve applied.” She says that they would also like to be able to equip every resident’s room with a small refrigerator. The facility will have three dining rooms, and each must have tables, chairs, dishwashers, warmers, dishes, tableware... the list goes on and on. There are two court-

yards, each of those will have seating areas, planters, and other amenities. Chevraux says, “The Lions Club has donated funds for a water feature already.” The board hopes that a third outdoor space will provide an opportunity for residents to have raised garden plots if they wish, it’s another thing on the want/need list that will need to be funded. Chevraux says that the foundation has received memorial donations in smaller amounts, saying that individual donations add up, and make larger purchases possible. “You may not be in a position to donate enough to purchase 40 televisions, but your donation can help us purchase one, and that’s important. “Any amount people have to offer is welcomed,” she says. “We want to acknowledge people’s gifts in a real way, large or small. Chevraux says the board is playing around with some ideas about displaying a list of needed equipment and the cost of purchasing it at their upcoming fundraiser. She says the best donations are often left to the board to determine the greatest need, which gives them a lot more versatility when funding all projects. She thinks that people tend to think that all funds donated to the Foundation go to long term care, “but we’re responsible for it all. “Any of us could require care or a certain piece of equipment, on any given day.” The board is also responsible for equipment and furnishings in the acutecare hospital, palliative care, and emergency/lab/x-ray departments. “We also plan events to support and uphold the staff, we sponsor scholarships, and provide staff in-

How does the Battle River Community Foundation decide how much to grant each year? Canada Revenue dictates a minimum of 3.5% of our endowments be granted each year. centives as a means of telling our staff, ‘We appreciate you and ask you to stay; you’re doing a great job.’” Chevraux says that donations that are earmarked to be used for a specific purpose only must sit and wait until that need must be filled. “Donations can also be marked to go to areas of general need, or highest need,” she says. Chevraux says she’s

very excited about the changes that are coming with the Campus of Care, as a new model and approach to care is being piloted here. “I remember speaking with members of the design team,” she says. “Nursing was born in the days of Florence Nightingale, often during war time, with wards and lines of beds, and that’s still the model for most long term

care facilities. “That may still work for hospital acute care, but Long Term Care is not a hospital, it’s home for our residents. “They’re not sick. This is their home. We are changing our approach to caring.” The Board is hosting a fall fundraiser this October, holding a pub night that features a good oldfashioned kitchen party,

with east coast band Derina Harvey, hoping to bring in enough funds to purchase everything that’s needed for the expansion, and get a handle on what will be needed for phase two. The Board will host a live auction during the night, and Chevraux says there will be opportunities to make a contribution no matter what your budget is.

Help your local Flagstaff Library win a Nintendo Switch Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Parkland Library is a network of 49 public libraries across central Alberta, including Flagstaff’s libraries. In honour of September being Library Card sign up month, Parkland has instituted a little competition between libraries to try and win a Nintendo Switch kit worth $500. The winner will be picked from the library who sees the greatest per-

centage growth in new library patrons this September, so get down to your local library soon and sign up. Parkland has another promotion, coming up Wednesday, Sept. 18. “Celebrate #eBookLove with Read an eBook Day!” Through your local library card, patrons not only have access to all the reading materials in their local libraries, including audio books, movies on dvd and blu-ray, and

more, there’s a whole world of books available through each and every Parkland Library, including a whole array of eBooks. Today’s library patrons literally have the world at their fingertips. If you’re a newspaper or magazine fanatic, but the cost gets you down, or the recycling, reading publications via eBooks might be worth looking into. Some of the advantages of reading using a tablet,

iPad, or special reader like Kobe or Kindle is that you can usually adjust the type size and lighting to make reading easy on the eyes. For those who say they miss flipping pages, most eBook readers try to make the page flip expe-

rience as real as possible. In fact the whole eBook reading experience is as personal as what you read. There’s nothing like cracking a new book, smelling the new paper and ink and marvelling at a shiny new cover, but

there are a myriad of ways to access your favourite authors that suit you to a tee. Stop by your local library this month and find out what’s changed! While there, sign up for a library card and help your library win a prize!

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta is inviting Albertans to put their names forward to lead the singing of ‘O Canada in the Assembly during the fall session. During session, the 87 Members of the Assembly are led in the singing of ‘O Canada every Monday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Traditionally the song has been led by an anthem singer, but this fall the Assembly hopes to see more community participants lend their voices to this important task. “The legislature is the people’s house and we want to give Albertans passionate about sharing their voice an op-

portunity,” says Speaker Nathan Cooper. “I encourage Albertans to let us know if they are interested in singing ‘O Canada to help MLAs begin the

important work they do every week.” Singers who would like to put their name(s) forward can contact the Speaker’s Office by email at officeofthe speaker@assembly.ab.ca

Harvest experiencing delays due Hardisty Pharmacy robbed to weather province wide Leslie Cholowsky Editor

Leslie Cholowsky Editor An abbreviated Crop Conditions Report from Alberta Agriculture on Tuesday, Sept. 3 shows the provincial harvest eight per cent complete, nearly six points below the five-year average of 14 per cent by that time period. Figures for north east Alberta (Smoky Lake, Vermilion, Camrose, Provost) shows only peas combined, at 16.2 per cent of the estimated total harvest. Swathed numbers are reported at three per cent. “As crop immaturity and wet fields persist, general harvest of major crops in north east and north west has yet to commence.” The report says that while harvest

I feel my role goes well beyond programming and administration.” Docksteader added, “We don’t just connect to young parents, we are connecting also with grandparents, especially those who live here whose grandkids do not.” Kroetch asked about the connection between the Family Resource Centre and the Early Childhood Coalition; Docksteader responded that the group meets monthly, and works to educate people on the importance of early childhood development. Kroetch commented, “The coalition is so important. These groups are not competing but combining and enhancing the resources we have.” Docksteader agreed, “It’s very much a regional approach. We’ve had such a consistent group, all working together for the same goal.” Council had some questions and suggestions over the Society’s financial statements to avoid reporting all funding in one year versus deferring it over multiple years. Docksteader confirmed that the Society works casinos to get funding that covers the facility rent over three years. Docksteader closed by telling Council, “Thank you for your support; for partnering with us.” The morning’s final presentation came from Nanette Jones and Lois Polege of Flagstaff Community Adult Learning regarding funding for the Welcoming Community project. Flagstaff County has funded this program since 2012, with $30,000 in 2012 and 2013; $50,000 in 2014 through 2016; $52,500 in both 2017 and 2018, and

is delayed, there is some haying occurring, with 74 per cent reporting at good or excellent. Cool temperatures at night are sparking concerns of frost as parts of the foothills fell below freezing, with the Peace and the northern north east regions circling -1. Pasture conditions are reported at 50 per cent good and 32.4 per cent excellent in the north east. The Environment Canada Extended Forecast for much of the region on Tuesday, Sept. 10 forecast clear and sunny skies until Sunday, with a 30 per cent chance of daytime showers that day, and 60 per cent of evening showers. Normals for the period are highs of 18, with lows of plus 3.

The employees of Hardisty’s Community Drug Mart had a fright on Tuesday, Sept. 3, when, at 11:40 a.m., the pharmacy was robbed by a knife wielding assailant. The female suspect demanded pharmaceutical drugs from the pharmacy. She is described as 30-35 years old, weighing 200-220 lbs, between 5’6” and 5’8” in height. She had dark brown hair, pulled into a bun, and was wearing a dark green ball cap, a black hoodie, blue jeans, and a pink or red face shield. Her complexion outside the mask was described as ‘medium.’ The woman spoke with a thick English accent which police believe to be fake. She left the store with the drugs in a Walmart shopping bag, on foot. Police

suspect she may have had a vehicle waiting. After the incident Allan Johnstone School took precautionary measures and went into a hold and secure situation for the afternoon. BRSD Communications Officer Diane Hutchinson explains that a Hold and Secure means that the school is stopping an indent that is happening outside of the building from coming inside. “The outside doors of the school were locked, but students were free to move about inside the building and all classes carried on as usual. “It was basically like having an inside recess.” Corporal Trent Cleveland, Acting Commander of the Killam RCMP Detachment, says that students were never in any danger whatsoever. The incident is currently under investigation by RCMP.

$50,000 in 2019. FCAL is asking for a three year funding commitment, 2020 to 2022, of $52,000, $52,800. and $54,300. Polege recounted a time in her life when she worked in New Guinea, and found herself a newcomer with cultural, administrative, and language barriers to overcome. The pair say that most of their work is done in four main areas: employment support, language skills, learning about the community/cultural skills, and building social and community connections. Polege said they do work one-on-one with job searchers, and typically see a steady stream of people come into the office to view the job board, and get help with applications. “Not everybody likes to go online,” Polege says. “Employment is a big part of this project.” Welcome bags are another project of the program, containing information about services, groups, and resources within each community. Jones says, “Education is our main function, including English as a second language.” The pair say their project is multifaceted, helping newcomers to the Flagstaff Community access a variety of services and necessities. “We feel it has made a difference in a lot of people’s lives.” Kroetch said, “You’re giving support to new citizens so they see the advantage to living in Flagstaff County. In that

way, this aligns with our goals.” He asked Polege and Jones, “How to you reach out to newcomers?” “Some through our job board, sometimes through people in the community. “A lot of our job is making sure the broader community is aware of what is available, so they are making the connection with people in our communities,” says Polege. Deputy Reeve Howard Shield commented, “All three groups have so much in common, all try to deliver community information, that’s so vital.” Polege replied, “Our links to our community partners are so vital in compiling the information we provide. All the different connections make a net to catch most of the people coming in to our communities.” Kroetch said, “All three of these groups work together and form partnerships; no group is an island. “Industry and jobs bring people. Your role is to welcome them and allow them to build roots through connections in the community.” Polege said, “It’s a happy experience. We are really blessed as well to see people walk out of our offices with their heads held higher, their step a little lighter because of the help we provided. “There are people of tremendous courage and resilience coming into our area; often qualities we want for our communities.” Councillors talked about asking the

three groups to bring their requests to the other municipalities in the region, or even including support within intermunicipal collaboration frameworks (ICF) with the region’s communities. Councillor Jeanette Herle said, “We can’t make our support contingent on other communities. One community could say ‘no,’ then they get nothing.” Assistant CAO Brent Hoyland added, ”It should be the duty of the organizations [to ask] instead of us - it feels like we would be strong arming both.” He added, “They have reached out to us because we have the funds that some of our towns and villages don’t have, they are dealing with tight budgets.” Financial Officer Deb Brodie said, “We will, too. You’ve made a recommendation to have these contributions included, but once the budget is done, you may have to make a decision.” Herle said, “It is up to each of these groups to go to other municipalities and educate them as to the value of these programs to them.” Council voted to follow the recommendations for all three to include contributions to all three programs in the 2020 budget. Brodie indicated the preliminary budget would be presented in late September or early October. The province has still not released its budget indicating what funding municipalities can expect for 2019, with indications that it will be tabled this fall.

group, and have them pitch the idea forward. Councillor Bob Coutts says he brought the idea to Council. He adds, “I’ve always thought that our greatest opportunity for growth will come from someone who already has a connection to the community. “They know it, they’ve been here. “Rather than spending a lot of money on a shotgun approach to promoting Forestburg outside the region, I thought why not spend money in town to do

that?” Coutts said once Council determined some ground rules, for instance that the incentives would only apply to new residents and businesses and not retroactively, they got behind the idea pretty fast. Council spread the word to residents through their newsletter and social media. There is no deadline on the campaign.

A simple rosebud A young new preacher was walking along with an older, more seasoned preacher, in the garden one day. Feeling a bit insecure about what God had for him to do, he was asking the older preacher for some advice. The older preacher walked up to a rosebush, handed the young preacher a rosebud and told him to open it, without tearing off any petals. The young preacher looked in disbelief at the older preacher, and was trying to figure out what a rosebud could possibly have to do with his wanting to know the will of God for his life and ministry. Because of his great respect for the older preacher, he proceeded to try to unfold the rose, while keeping every petal intact. It wasn’t long before he realized how impossible this was to do. Noticing the younger preacher’s inability to unfold the rosebud without tearing it, the older preacher began to

recite the following: It is only a tiny rosebud, A flower of God’s design. But, I cannot unfold the petals, With these clumsy hands of mine. The secret of unfolding flowers, Isn’t know to such as I. God opens this flower so sweetly, While in my hands it would die. If I cannot unfold a rosebud, This flower of God’s design; Then how can I have the wisdom, To unfold this life of mine? So, I’ll trust, in Him, For leading me every moment of my day. I will look to Him for guidance, Each step along the way. For the path that lies before me, Only my heavenly Father knows. I’ll trust Him to unfold each moment, Just as He unfolds the rose. Pastor Ben Kellert Killam Pentecostal Church

No more guessing as to when the younger students are going back to school as the temporary trailers and up and approved. It will be a rather weird year for students at CHSPS, but it’ll still be a good year. Along with Camp Sedgewick, the graduates from the 2018-19 year will make their way back to Sedgewick for their grad on Saturday. There

She not only was the first Canadian to win the Canadian Open since 1969 earlier in August, but is also the first Canadian, and the first born after 2000, to win the Grand Slam Singles Title against the legend Serena Williams. Congratulations, Andreescu! You have made Canadians from all over our country and around the world so proud. This Friday is Friday the 13th as well as a full moon. Beware of the

crazy stuff that may follow, if you do believe in that kind of stuff. It might be a good time to take the day off and stay in bed. After working in retail for a large chunk of my working life, I will not deny that the full moon did correspond with 99 per cent of the craziest stuff that happened at those jobs. Hard to say that it was a coincidence when it happened every full moon or Friday the 13th. It’s almost like a pre-halloween day, just less candy and more scary. the point that the old Rex Café was located where the Memorial Wall now stands. It’s hard to see special old buildings lost to time, which is what made it thrilling for me to discover the most beautiful bright blue St. Edmund’s Anglican church high on a hill in Big Valley a few days ago on the way back from the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller. I walked all around the circa-1916 wooden chapel taking pictures; the view across the valley was truly spiritually inspiring. There are some very

important seniors workshops coming up in Alliance. One is Seniors on Support on Sept. 17 and the other is on elder abuse on Oct. 17. If you think either of these workshops would help you, I encourage you to track down Randy or Phyl here in Alliance for more info. I also heard there may be a workshop on death and dying coming up, taught by Rev. Diane.
