North of 16 Blues & Country Music Festival showcases some of Canada’s most talented singer/songwriters Michelle Pinon Editor The talents of the Command Sisters have taken them from Nashville to Los Angeles to Shanghai and Chipman. Sisters Sarah and Charlotte sang in perfect harmony, and their skills on guitar were just as impressive, when they performed on stage in the Chipman National Hall Saturday, August 15 before an audience of about 50 concert goers. Equally impressive was Willie James & Crawdad at the Chipman Hotel. Jacquie Fenske stated that the venue was packed. But the talent was limited to just those two acts, it
spread to Front Porch Roots Revue with Stewart McDougal, Blue Yonder, Tim Hus, Monkey Junk, Randy Hollar, as well as Alfie and Byron Myhre.
Scott Reid According to rough estimates, around 500 people attended the two day festival. There were
just over 100 volunteers who contributed their time to make North of 16 a success. Fenske said the festival has “great potential” and said she will be making a return engagement after camping out on the ag. grounds over the weekend. There are many others who will be doing the same next year. Chipman Ag. Society President Scott Reid heard some positive feedback including: “The event was very well organized. For the first time that was a huge compliment,” said Reid. Even his farrier told him that relatives were already talking about it. Of course, Facebook already had plenty of comments, and several
people said they would be coming out to Chipman next year for the festival. Organizers also received suggestions as to ways they could make improvements, and now they will have a year to make adjustments and tweak plans for the 2016 edition of the North of 16 Blues & Country Music Festival. “If they keep doing this, it will keep getting bigger,” said Randy Hollar. “I think Chipman can pull it off,” he added. “Just because it’s a small town doesn’t mean you can’t do great things,” said Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville MLA Jessica Littlewood.

Volunteers urgently needed emergency care 24/7 petition Michelle Pinon Editor
Two time North American Fiddle Champion Alfie Myhre and award winning musician-son Byron Myhre teamed up to play several tunes together Friday evening at the Chipman Ag. Grounds. The musical duo also joined Randy Hollar for a few songs before Front Porch Revue with Stewart McDougal hit the stage.
A Lamont senior citizen who has been advocating for the reinstatement of 24/7 emergency care at the Lamont Health Care Centre (LHCC) is one step closer to his goal. Larry Doskoch, said now he needs volunteers to help draft a petition, and canvas residents to sign it, and then forward it on to the provincial government. “I need volunteers from every corner of the county to form a petition committee,” stated Doskoch. He realizes that timing isn’t exactly ideal with harvesting in full swing, but he
would like if at all possible to have the petition completed by the time the budget comes out this fall. Doskoch is asking anyone who is interested in assisting him in his cause to email him at: emergcare24.7@gmail.com Previously, members of the Lamont Health Care Centre made a funding request to Alberta Health Services to support 24 hour emergency coverage and availability. Initially Doskoch had requested assistance on the matter from Lamont town council, but was told it was a matter for the health board as LHCC is a privately oprated facility.

Lamont County warning producers to beware Editor
Lamont County posted an urgent warning for local livestock producers on its website last week. The “Buyer Beware notice stated that, “It is urgent that livestock producers be aware that out of province hay may have significant risk for noxious and prohibited species as well as herbicide residues and rats. While there have been no reported cases to date, Lamont County Agricultural Fieldman Terry Eleniak said an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and offered some advice on the issue. He advises any producers looking into purchasing hay from out of the province
to do their research ahead of time as well as get samples of the hay before agreeing to or purchasing it. Eleniak pointed out that during the 2002 drought there were several cases where invasive species were found to be in hay shipments from the Vanderhoof area of British Columbia. He doesn’t want the same thing happening again as the short-term gain can result in long-term liability. The notice went on to state, “It has been brought to our attention that hay from Manitoba is at significant risk to be infested with leafy spurge among a number of weeds such as bladder campion, common tansy, scentless chamomile and
red bartsia. There is also a high possibility such hay is from highway roadsides that have been sprayed, cut and baled, so will most likely have Tordon, Milestone and
dicamba residues, among other herbicides. Any feed that has been baled in 2014 or earlier runs a higher risk of having rats who have made their home in the bales

While some local producers may be able to make do with the amount of hay bales they harvested this year, others may have to look at outside supplies to fill in the gaps to feed cattle and horses this year. Lamont County is urging producers to beware if they intend to purchase out of province hay.

Opinion Province supplies fiscal update to Albertans The provincial government r eleased its first quarter fiscal update to Albertans on Aug. 31st. The first quarter r esults show an incr ease of $456 million for disaster assistance, including agricultural drought relief and wildfir e fighting cost, over and above the $301 million allocated in the March 26th budget. Joe Ceci, Pr esident of the T reasury Board and Minister of Finance stated, “The first quarter update highlights the dif ficult choices we have ahead as we build a budget that is prudent, while creating jobs and protecting the frontline services that Albertans count on. There is no doubt many Alberta families and businesses ar e feeling the effects of the dramatic dr op in oil prices. That’s why our government is focused on building a plan for job cr eation and diversification of our economy.” The forecast includes an increase of $1.4 billion in operating expenses, r eflecting the r e-investments in Health, Education, Innovation and Advanced Education, and Human Services. These increased expenses ar e partially of fset in 2015-16 by new r evenue measures announced in the spring legislative session. Revenue is for ecast at $44.3 billion, $1 billion higher than previously forecast. This reflects a net increase of $497 million in income tax r evenue this year, mainly due to the government’s intr oduction of a graduated income tax system that takes effect October 1; a two-per centage-point corporate income tax incr ease; and a lar ger than expected personal income tax base. This for ecast also accounts for the elimination of the pr evious government’s planned health levy . Ceci added that, “Forecasts indicate our economy will recover in 2016. In the meantime, Albertans can tr ust that we will continue to be fiscally r esponsible while investing in their priorities: health car e that’s there when we need it, good schools and a quality education for our childr en, and support for our most vulnerable families.” It was pointed out that the for ecast was finalized at the end of July and does not r eflect the “dramatic dr op” in oil prices. Watching Global TV news this morning there was almost an event split per centage wise between the approval and disapproval rating of Premier Rachel Notley since she took power in May. Many people have been waiting and watching anxiously in r ecent months, and now they have some information and numbers to go by. So it will be interesting to see what the financial picture looks like in thr ee months time. What do you think? Michelle Pinon

From Where I Sit: No Accident
By Hazel Anaka With Babas & Borshch Ukrainian Festival 3.0 successfully complete, one may think the work is over until sometime next spring. One would be wrong. With keys and rentals to return, there wasn’t even a chance to sleep in the day after. Instead Roy, Hazel, and some County employees scattered to return linens, a 40 foot curtain-side trailer, tents, generator, the shuttle and more. It’s Thursday evening as I write this and I still have to finish unloading a borrowed utility trailer. But it’s more than unloading. It’s sorting and storing the things the festival now owns like signs, florals, flags, souvenirs, and more. It’s also separating those personal items we lend to the festival and want back for our own use. Those are the heavy and bulky and awkward things. Equally daunting
is making order of the paper that is generated. Because before long I’ll be appearing before County council to present a post-mortem on the festival. There will be meetings with Jim Newman, Economic Development Manager to debrief the finer points of the event, capture the must-do’s before they escape us, and begin setting up meetings that will position us for next year. Monday and Tuesday was spent giving interviews and answering media questions. In addition, I answered emails and phone calls from people who wanted to offer feedback or ask questions. We welcome it all: the compliments give us the strength to carry on; the complaints give us reason to improve. And because social media only lives when you feed it, I spent today doing Facebook posts and trying to learn how to add a boat load of wonderful images to our website. It appears that what I’ve been doing is what I need to continue doing. Hopefully most viewers will understand that clicking on an image will enlarge it. Then, lest I start to relax, I need to do the books and recoup the money I’ve spent on all kinds of things from radio spots to newspaper ads to ziplock bags. At the same time, I keep my eye on the calendar. At least two grant applica-
tion deadlines are due in September. There is also all the reporting to government departments (federal and provincial) who’ve given us money. In a few days, we’ll have a volunteer wind-up that unfortunately not everyone is able to attend. Volunteers are in a class of their own and are owed a debt of gratitude. I happen to believe ours are the best. Then, just when I think I’m finally done, the extras are tackled. Last year I wrote messages in more than 125 Christmas cards for volunteers, sponsors, performers and others. This year I’ll be working on new databases and reaching out to new performers. Finally, when all is said and done, we can look at what we’ve accomplished and be proud because on so many levels Babas & Borshch is resonating with those
whose opinions matter: Lamont County, visitors, sponsors, Ukrainian
organizations, Ukrainians and wannabes. And that’s no

Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Mundare celebrates 100 years of service Michelle Pinon Editor
All of the pews, balcony, and chairs outside of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church were fully occupied with parishioners, visitors and special guests during its centennial mass on Sunday, Aug. 30th. One of the guests, Lorraine Chudyk (nee Ruzycki), was standing on the front lawn with several other people. Chudyk was apologetic, stating that she had to attend her daughters bridal shower in Edmonton early in the afternoon, and that is why she was late for the service. Chudyk went on to say that her great grandparents, Michael and Barbara Ruzycki, came over from Poland to Canada in 1899 and they both were buried in the church’s cemetery. Chudyk, was one of about 200 people who came to attend the special celebration. Strolling over to talk with Chudyk was Lloyd Dziwenka, who stated that his grandfather Peter Dziwenka helped build the church. Lloyd, now 65, was an alter boy and remembers catechism, receiving the sacraments of the church, and even painted the church 18 years ago. A week before the 100th, Lloyd was out repairing cracks and painting the steps and landing of the entryway. Perhaps one of the oldest attendees was 93-year-old Joe Cherniawski, who married his wife Anne (Dziwenka) on August 8, 1944. Both of Joe’s parents, Joe and Mary Cherniawski, are buried in the church cemetary. One of the youngest attendees was ninemonth-old baby Sofia Ginda. It was to say the celebration was like
a homecoming for many of the attendees, and a one in a lifetime event that will be cherished by all of them. Janusz Zalewski, who was photographing the event, has also done a lot of research into the church for his proposed book “Poland on the Prairies” and provided some of the documentation on the church and its history which dates back to 1900 when the early pioneers from eastern and central Europe settled in an area north of Beaverhill Lake. Father Francis Olszewski, who arrived in January of 1900, chose a site about eight miles northwest of Mundare and built a small convent at Krakow. The convent was used as a school and the Sisters Auxiliaries of the Apostolate taught the children of the settlement. In the convent was a chapel. John Wozny, donated three acres of land for the church and ceme-
tery about four miles southwest of present Mundare. The little log church was called Dombrowa, meaning Oak Forest in Polish. Then in 1906 there was a desire by some of the Polish immigrants from Galicia to build a church in the village for people of Roman Catholic faith. In 1915, the present day church was built. On July 4th, the cornerstone of the church was laid and blessed by the Vicar General, Most Rev. Father Luduc. The parish remained vibrant and active over several generations, and on Oct. 20, 1991, it celebrated its 75th anniversary. Even though regular church services are no longer held in the church, it does open for weddings, funerals, and special occasions. Now, Sunday, Aug. 30th will also mark its place in history along with the people who have left an indelible impression.

The wrap up party for participants for the Andrew Public Libraryʼs Books and Bowling Summer Program was held on Thursday, Aug. 27. Participants, who range in age from three to 12 years of age had a blast on the bouncy ride, playing mini-golf, and eating ice cream cones on a beautiful summerʼs day. On hand for the celebration were library board members Angela Diedrich-Brostrom, far left, and Cynthia Sagstuen, far right. Organizers received such a positive response to the literacy program that they will definitely be hosting it again next summer.

It’s probably not all that often that you can catch a police officer off guard, but that’s what happened when I arrived at the Ve g r e v i l l e R C M P Detachment MICHELLE PINON PHOTO Cpl. Jerry Nutbrown began his Thursday afternoon asking to new posting last week. speak with Cpl. Jerry Nutbrown. Cpl. Nutbrown, only his fifth day on the job, was gracious enough to allow me to do a short interview and take a photo so readers will get to know and see his name and face. Cpl. Nutbrown said he is happy to be back in the province. He added that he is familiar with Lloydminster and Wainwright, and is looking forward to serving in his new role and throughout the detachment area, which also includes the Town of Mundare. Even though he was up to his eyeballs in paperwork, his friendly smile and gracious demeanor were a welcome sight indeed.
Vegreville RCMP warn residents Vegreville RCMP received reports of paving crews soliciting local rural area residents between Aug. 16 and Aug. 26. The crews claim they are a contracting company working in the area on large projects with an excess in paving materials. It is reported that these men are claiming they are willing to give customers an inexpensive rate on these materials. Once work has
begun, they then demand significantly more money than the original price quoted. Reports indicate the men are seeking cash for their work but refuse to provide quotes for the job at hand, or invoices for services rendered. The company has threatened court action and liens to ensure work is paid for. Similar incidents have been reported from all across Alberta. The public is being
requested to protect their interests by ensuring the following: - Get recommendations and check references. Ask questions about the company’s work quality and time lines. - Get a written quote or invoice before work is started. - Get complete contact information from the company including full name, address and telephone numbers for the
company and the individual contractors. If you are tempted by what sounds like a good deal, get their information and let them know you will think about it. They will likely pressure you to make a decision that day but stay firm. The public is encouraged to report all suspicious persons or activity to Police in their area.

Hazel Anaka loves when a plan comes together. The co-ordinator of the annual Babas Borshch Ukrainian Festival said the 3r d annual event was very successful. “It’s gratifying to have people say they were back for the third straight year and to hear that so many others were first timers.” Even though attendance numbers have not been officially confirmed, Anaka said attendance was roughly about the same as last year, around the 3,000 mark. One of the most popular events was the apusta make it and take it as well as the evening entertainment that featured Axios, Shumka, and the abav u oli band. Anaka was also pleased with the calibre of the Borshch Cook Off entries, and that sentiment was confirmed by the contests three expert judges. Anaka has been keeping busy compiling comments from the guest book and answering emails with comments. As far as improvements, Anaka said they may have to rejig the set up for the food concession and banquet caterer and have more food concessions on the festival Baba Magda the charisgrounds. There is matic ambassador of the always room to festival greets the crowd. improve, and Anaka is always trying to do that, along with the other har d working volunteers. “The work of the festival does not end with Sunday night tear down, so we need time to debrief, post images, write r eports, handle a dozen post event details including giving our volunteers a thank you event. They will be a great source of first-hand information about ways to impr ove and what worked very well this year.”
It was hard to get a picture of the swift flowing, high flying Ukrainian dancers, but that is what added to the dramatic flair of their performance. Kisses were free.
